Great casual pub to enjoy a decent meal and a few drinks. Food is always a pretty good standard and the staff is always friendly. Always a good place to catch up with mates

After reading some of the reviews on here I was more than a little hesitant to try The Principal and kept glancing over at the Japanese place across the road as we walked into the almost empty establishment. However, from start to finish I was more than pleasantly surprised. The staff were friendly and accommodating, understanding of a friends Coeliac disease and gluten free requirements, and put up with us when we were easily the annoying last people out the door at the end of our meal.
Two of us got the Solitary meals, the burger and the risotto and both found the meals pleasant and full of flavour. The other two shared three entree plates, the lemon squid, the gnocchi and the fish tacos and all three dishes were the same high quality. I’ve had better of all three in other places that specialised in those cuisines over the years but there was honestly nothing to complain about. The squid was extremely tender, the gnocchi light and fluffy with well seasoned pork and a delicious basil oil and with the fish tacos I’d have preferred a corn tortilla to a floured one but they were still delicious. At the end of the night I was thoroughly pleased with our dining choice and had absolutely no regrets.
We came to the principal a couple of nights ago for a nice date night meal. We arrived and were seated after a short wait and ordered garlic bread, a parmigiana and a scotch fillet (MR) along with a couple of drinks. The garlic bread arrived very quickly. And was super delicious, and shortly after our mains arrived. The parmi was a massive portion and well priced, and the sides to the steak extremely flavoursome. Unfortunately the steak was very undercooked, mostly rare and in a few spots blue. The wait staff were nowhere to be seen most of the night as the bar was busy so I had to embarrassingly carry my plate to the bar to point out the mishap. Luckily they were understanding, I had a brand new steak cooked to perfection shortly after and they offered a complimentary drink whilst I waited. In a crappy situation they definitely made it bearable. We will definitely be returning to try some other items on the menu!
