Quality Japanese food. I've ordered the Salmon don and bento box numerous times. Very fresh and tasty.
An impromptu random stop in Mitcham ended up with a quick dinner. We wanted to have Korean food but the place was fully booked. So we decided to try Japan Yomo next door for some Japanese food.
🔆LOCATION🔆
Japan Komo Restaurant is situated on Whitehorse Road, really close to the corner of Mitcham Road along the busy shopping precinct.
The décor is simple yet has signature Japanese displays. There is limited seating (maximum 25 people) with a bar bench at the back next to the register/bar area.
🔆SERVICE🔆
As we didn’t have a booking and the place was pretty full, we were advised the only seating available was at the walled bench area. This was fine with us as we weren’t planning to stay long for dinner. The staff were all Japanese, and it seemed like it was a family run business.
🔆MENU/PRICE🔆
We ordered:
Teriyaki Beef Bento, $17.90
(includes edamame, gyoza, salad, vegie croquette and rice)
Tasmania Roll, $20.90
(Torched salmon with special sauce on California roll with salmon inside)
🔆VERDICT🔆
Wow! 9 very generous size sushi pieces in the Tasmania Roll! We thoroughly enjoyed it. The salmon was lightly torched and had a nice smoked charred flavour. The rice was really fresh, soft and still warm. The avocado and crab meat along with raw salmon on the middle were all fresh as well. Yum!! It’s no wonder the charge $20.90 for this dish. It would be great if they could do a half-serve size (i.e. Entrée) as that would be a good meal size for 1 person hehe!
The Teriyaki Bento was also tasty. The beef was nicely marinated in teriyaki sauce. I particularly love the vegetable croquettes. It was soo fresh, soft and tasty. I felt that it was a little over-priced for the bento though. Overall, a good meal.
A very nice little place in the busy street with a nice Japanese lady looking after the restaurant.
We got the teriyaki chicken bento box and the pan fried gyoza for a bite. The pan fried gyoza wasnt the best with a batter going above it qhich ruins the texture.
However the miso soup and the bento box was top notch. Slightly on the higher end of the price scale, its still really a good experience for any kind of occasion.
Japan Komo is a nice little Japanese restaurant. The food is simple and done well. The Wagyu Bento was tasty - the wagyu was very tender. But the Unagi Bento was quite mediocre. The Japanese curry has mushrooms in it which was quite an interesting addition. The Oyako Don was quite enjoyable though, but lacking umami flavour.
Family run business with fresh sashimi and lots of love. Although its on the pricey end, it’s absolutely worth every cent. You should try their sushi stack - its unique and eye catching! Love how they make the rolls on order, noone likes rolls sitting in the fridge for hours. You need to keep in mind that they dont open on Sundays!
To be honest, when the beef tataki came in and having a Woolworth salad taste, I was not expecting the oyako don to be any good. Yet I was wrong, the chicken is soo soft that even has a sponge texture, along with the silky egg, and sprinkle of light soy sauce, the whole dish was mind changing. I decide to give it a 4/5, will be back again to explore some more hidden content.
We enjoyed a dinner at Komo. We ordered the tempura prawn inside out roll, salmon salad, and eel sizzling plate. The inside out roll was fabulous - big, chunky and filled with lots of ingredients. The salmom salad was fresh. The sizzling eel had a flavourful sauce but was a bit charred imo. Unfortunately they ran out of green tea ice cream the day we went.

Good and affordable food. The udon is very tasty. The bento boxes are really nice and pretty cheap considering the size and quality. The service is fast. It is actually quite impressive as they don’t have many staff. They can improve a bit on the smiles and attention to customers. However I can understand that they need to rush with the limited staff. Parking is a bit difficult to get in front of it but there’s plenty of parking behind the shopping complex in the multi level car park. This place is definitely one of our family favourites.
Simple beautiful Japanese food that is nourishing, has a depth of flavour, carefully prepared and inexpensive, will keep coming back, wonderful staff
Nice little family own restaurant. I love Japanese food and this one is real Japanese food. Most of Japanese. Restaurant run by Chinese but this one is run by real Japanese couple and the taste is real Japan taste. Place is clean and well organise, food is delicious and will definitely come back for more. Glad I found a genuine Japanese run restaurant.
I love Komo! This is my favourite casual Japanese retaurant by far. The bento boxes are great and you get a free cup of miso or a can of drink with every box. Delicious and fresh food. Definitely recommend Komo.
The food is delicious, the staff are extremely friendly and it’s got great service.
Would definitely recommend the Tempura Udon although it may be too salty for some it was just right for me.
The sushi is very limited from what I can see at first sight but it’s ok.
The quick time is definitely accurate. Tried the prawn gyoza and the spicy chirashi. Not a fan of the sauce on the chirashi and it wasn't amazing value. The gyoza was nice due to the crispness of the skin (no idea where the review of the microwaved gyoza came from). All in all a nice feed but not somewhere to come specially for.
Friendly service. Good quality food here. Had spicy chicken don. The spiciness is spot on. Chicken is tender, enough rice to fill you up. Surprising good for such a small place.
I got the fried prawn Gyoza and Spicy Chicken Don, Take Away. Was waiting probably 8 minutes at most. I can say that this is the best Japanese Takeaway I've ever had. It was actually spicy, had heaps of vegetables and the gyoza was perfect. A very reasonable price for the quality and quantity. I will be going back to dine in, thats for sure.
Foods was great and service was warm and kind.
Over 5 people need to book before you go.
Most of food deliver in 5 to 10 minutes.
I was try fresh sashimi plate and sushi roll.
It was unforgettable dinner that I've never had before.
Well priced, value for money Japanese! Had bento box, okinomyaki and miso soup and was very happy with the lovely authentic flavours. Was great service and quick delivery of food. Will definitely order here again as I love Japanese food!
EDIT DEC 2018: Japan Komo recently underwent renovations and with it there has been some changes since my original review;
Perhaps in an effort to compete with the Korean restaurant nearby, the overall ambiance and design for the store has become a lot more modern, high class and moody. With that however, the prices have gone up to match. The food still tastes delicious and still boast large portions, but I can no longer consider the restaurant a quick, cheap and casual experience. It’s a shame, but still a lovely restaurant. The menu still has many options, ranging from sushi and sashimi to udon, curry and donburi. Check it out if you’re in the area!
OUTDATED REVIEW: Excellent service and food. A casual but inviting experience, staff was friendly and food was delicious. We got Salmon Don and Beef Don and were served within 5 minutes, albeit we came at 6pm before the dinner rush (on a Monday). Extremely tasty and the most generous serving of meat I've seen in a donburi!
Great food and decent prices. Super fast service especially when ordering takeaway. Good quality fish for sashimi. One of our go to restaurants.
Love terriyaki beef obento there and all the sushi, but what a pity, there is no sushi bar any more. Tempura udon is another good choice.………
Hidden Little Gem in Mitcham, Menu which had your usual Japanese dishes like edamame, gyoza, tempura, sushi's and sashimi. We couldn't decide on what to order individually so we ended up getting a bento box each. The bento box comes with a choice of soft drink or miso which was surprising, great option. The food was fantastic, tasted awesome, portion sizes were spot on, the box comes with rice, edamame, sushi, small salad of lettuce, carrot, cucumber and corn with sesame dressing and vegetable croquettes so great variety. Overall food was awesome, atmosphere was great, service, needs a little bit of improvement but not too fussed. Definitely worth a try
An overall great experience. I got a bento box and it came with a miso soup/drink. The portions were generous; service was fast; and food tasted amazing! I'd definitely come back and hopefully my future experiences will be just as good.
Love this little gem. Authentic cheap Japanese food served by Japanese staff. Always served by a friendly face and the place never disappoints for a quick eat.
Good Japanese food at reasonable price! If you plan to dine in, better get there before 6.30pm, as itt is a small place and it gets fully packed easily. I would recommend their tempura dishes and their beef bento set.
So one evening a few weeks back I decided to stop by Japan Komo for dinner. Other teachers had told me their sushi was good, but I wanted to try a couple of old favourites as a benchmark. The interior is pretty stock standard. The service is pretty standard too. It wasn't too busy when I got there but things were picking up as I left. The udon has good flavour and the serving sizes are impressive, as is that of the agadeshi tofu.
Pretty good food!! Ordered veggie fried rice and veggie croquettes - they were so yum! Staff were delightful! Will definitely be popping back in!
Quite good food from a lovely little shop in Mitcham. The katsu don had more egg than I am used to, but I still enjoyed it.
Service was very fast and the food cheap. We will be going back!
Was delighted with the lightly crunchy chicken don with a tangy sweet sauce. The cabbage was crunchy and refreshing next to the batter flavour. Service was fast, the food was cheap, and satisfying. Enjoyed the vegie gyoza too. We will be back!
Delicious. I went to the restaurant this week. I love the chicken kasu Don, sushi and deep fry tofu. They are very delicious and price is reasonable. The stir fry udon noodle is not good as it tastes like steamed noodles, not fry ones. I would go to that restaurant again as good price and delicious. Next time i will try salmon Don.
Great lunch. Came here today and ordered the beef udon and it was amazing, the beef just melts in your mouth and the broth had a lot of flavour, their sashimi was perfect as well, very fresh and just melts in the mouth
I have tried a number of Japanese restaurants but so far this is the best. definitely worth it and the service is great i recommend the caterpillar roll and tasmania roll. In conclusion i strongly recommend this restaurant for Japanese food lovers!
Favourite place for a bento box. Love getting the salmon bento box whenever I can! Right near station so easy to pick some up on way home. friendly staff and delicious well priced food.
The place to visit again. Wonderful food. Reasonable price. Nice and clean. Value for money
Wonderful dishes at reasonable prices. All wellbeing menus. Clean and cosy^^
Real gem at Mitcham. Love
Thanks Chefs!!
Great food. We had the bento boxes. Was about $15 each. A big meal, value for money. We will be back!
Nice small shop. Ordered raw salmon don for $12.90, nice! Will come back!
CHICKEN DONBURI YUM!!!. Come here so often just for the chicken donburi YUMMM!
Best sushi rolls ever!! Lov.... Best sushi rolls ever!!
Loved spicy prawn and komo rolls.
So yum :)
The salmon Don was great. Place looks good, I will come back for more.
All the makings of an outstanding diner. Friendly staff and delicious authentic well-priced food makes this Japanese diner a wonderful restaurant to frequent. Try the chicken curry rice, it's heaped with generous servings of tender crunchy succulent fried chicken and a considerable serve of japanese curry with loads of vegetables that complements extremely well on a bed of fluffy japanese rice. The last time I had a good chicken curry was at Shyun in Carnegie. This is comparable. The sushi is fresh and tastes divine as well. I can't wait to go again when it reopens for the new year.
One of the best Japanese restaurant i've ever been. Definitely Komo is favorite Japanese restaurant for me. I visited Komo for few times and i have never been dissapointed with the food and the service. The food is very tasty and good value! Chicken katsu don and vegie gyoza are super delicious esp the don sauce. The food is freshly cooked and they use home cooked style which makes the dining experience becomes more enjoyable. Also, the owner and his daughter are very nice and generous. The portion is very big with a reasonable relatively cheap price, around 10-12 dollar for main dishes! Even the portion is big, my boyfriend and I we never left even one rice on the bowl since the food is super yummy. Definitely recommended this restaurant for a great food and dining experience with reasonable price which will make your stomach and wallet happyyy :) :) :)
The Freshest Sushi. Freshest sushi I’ve ever had. And wow the brown rice sushi is to die for! They only have a few pieces out on display and mostly make them on the spot with your choice of fillings. The menu looks great think I will have to make way through the menu so I will be back!
Been to this place several times and highly recommend to others! Awesome food and service. Udons are fantastic ! The best place for fresh sushi and sashimi!! Going for dinner this weekend again!
Lunch. Had a great lunch! Fresh yummy food. Mitcham needed it!
Such a relief to finally have a yummy Japanese restaurant closeby. Great hand rolls and rice meals!
Went out for dinner with the family to this cute little place. Had the variety of hand rolls, nigiri and the Korean style of sushi on rice. We tried the udon and the chicken katsu as well. We loved everything they served up. Service was great and food was great and not too pricey either. Will definately come back!
Great atmosphere, friendly staff, delicious and affordable food. The curry was quite generous!
Visited this friendly restaurant and ordered the Tempera Don, the taste is overall above average.
The veggie and prawn tempera were crispy and tasty, but the chicken tempera was slightly over-fried. That’s why I give 4 stars instead of 5.
Reasonable price, a suitable place for Japanese causal dining.
My niece favorite japanese restaurant. The service is fast, knows the right angle in taking photos 😀😀 the foods are delicious, price is pretty reasonable. A clean and nice ambience in the dining area.
Found this little gem in amongst very few restaurants in the area. Relaxing atmosphere with good music, lighting, decor. Food was tasty and affordable. My seafood Udon noodles were slightly chewy and well cooked. Hoped for more fresh seafood. Got a lot of processed fish balls. Okonomiyaki was good and everyone enjoyed their food. Curry rice has a bit of spice to it, so if you can't take much heat maybe avoid that dish. Will be returning to try out more dishes.
Great Japanese restaurant. Really nice dishes at fair prices.
Good taste, fair price and excellent service.
The food was good but disappointed that my panko prawns were swapped out for butterfly prawns without any communication from the restaurant.
p.s Food was still good though, will definitely return.
