Review St Albi - Moonah

Peter Vrakatselis
It's been a long while wanting to try these guys and I finally got around to treating myself. It was cool night so the warmth within was very inviting. It was busy inside which added to the overall atmosphere. I started off with the Warm Crusty Pita Bread with garlic sauce which went down a treat. For the main I opted for the Baker Steak (eye fillet stuffed with shallots and blue cheese) with a side of their well known Duck Fat Potatoes. The portions were what you'd expect for a fine dining restaraunt so I would mostly treat myself only once in awhile as I'm usually on a budget. But if it's quality you're after you won't be disappointed here. All up it cost me $63 ( I saved a bit as I only really drank sparkling water which was provided for free). The staff were great, very friendly and didn't keep me waiting long. I love being able to see the kitchen working. If you want to treat yourself then this is the place to do it.

After a 9 day ride on my horse Coda on our way to Parliament House in Hobart, a brief stop at St Albi for a rare scotch fillet steak with their signature coffee rub was a must. We had pre booked earlier that day and the staff were both friendly and very accommodating. On arrival we were made to feel at home as their regular super hero guests , Batman & Wonder Woman. The waitress was not only cheery but had an exceptional memory on the nights specials, she did not miss a beat and reeled off the menus perfectly. The steak was cooked exactly as ordered and the coffee rub appeased the taste buds. The side dishes of duck fat potato wedges and broccolini added to an excellent experience. Well deserved five stars, thank you everyone from St Albi Bar & Eatery you made our night 🥰

Absolutely the best dinner during my holidays in Tasmania. The atención and service was fantastic. I had the eye filete with butter, Best steak ever.

Pretty good food! Quite pricey for some dishes that may not be quite worth it. Definitely not bad but have had better. Mocktails were really good. Nice atmosphere.

Excellent service, modern restaurant/bar in a hole in the wall location with absolutely delicous food. We had the pita/garlic/cheese bread, salt n pepper squid and two steaks (cox and frame rub) with chips and cauliflower gratin. Everything was absolutely superb, the only feedback i could say is personally the chips had a bit too much seasoning on them (for me) but it made zero difference to the brilliant meal. 10/10, would come back anytime.

Been there three times in two weeks, awesome food and staff

I was very surprised to see the size of the oysters in conjunction with the prices. They were very small, were they Sydney rock oyster? Spawning? Or was the restaurant not high enough on the chain to get the best? At $4 per oyster I expected more. The Japanese oysters apparently had wasabi on them? Given I was really hungry and looking forward to the oysters. Very disappointing. I always give the staff a chance to fix the problem and even said when I worked at an oyster bar if it spawning season we gave an extra oyster to make up for it. $40 for a plate of oysters ‘I will tell the chef,’ doesn’t cut it.
If you know they are on the small side, give an extra one or take them off the menu.

A nice rustic atmosphere. The best steak in Hobart! The Wagyu steak is the best! Well worth your while asking if it’s on special. We also had arancini.

Had a group function here in their semi private area upstairs. Food was amazing and was a cute little place with a bit of rustic warehouse look to it. Service staff were very friendly but a little bit slow

Went here for my birthday with the family altogether a gathering of 8 people. Service great, pleasant and warm environment and the food was spectacular. While presentation could've been slightly better, the taste, portion size and how exquisite the meals actually were smashed the rating out of the park.

This place is great for steak, whether it's the wagyu or the rump, both were cooked to perfection, I would much recommend the coffee seasoning for the steak. The lamp shanks portions were grand and had a great taste and look to them. While the seafood curry didn't aesthetically provide 10/10 marks, it was definitely one of the best tasting curries I've ever had, thick, creamy and loaded with fresh seafood.

This is definitely a place I can't wait to return to.

Another trip to the burbs for a fine meal as always from Susie and the crew!

If you feel like a night out in a great restaurant with a quality fit out and attentive staff then St Albi is the place to dine.

Nestled in a factory in Moonah, Albert Rd we enjoyed a complete meal.

We chose an array of oysters and the spanner crab pate, all were exceptional I followed this with the pork rack which was cooked perfectly and quite large.

Lis had the quail as a main and rated this highly.

We enjoyed a Freycinet Riesling with our entree and a Frogmore Pinot with the mains.

Service was smooth and efficient.

Recommend highly

A great night out, as a Melbournite this place is like being at home. Very different to everything else we have been to in Hobart. Great atmosphere and food also. We had the Wagu scotch fillet and the Cajun fish. Both were lovely.

Great atmosphere (industrial meets dainty), attentive service, trendy place for lunch. Initially one thinks it might be too dark for lunch but you soon submerge into the concrete surroundings. I have been here for multiple lunches & highly recommend the entree squid. I also had eye fillet (which was fine, tad more medium than med-rare).

Only drawback is the price, which makes it a special occasion place rather than somewhere I would go for a catch up lunch. A special lunch time menu would be ideal.

Went to St Albis for my birthday had a 8pm late sitting it was a party of 14 we weren't to worried when our table wasn't ready but it all went downhill from there after being seated and we got some drinks and menus it appeared the wait staff were avoiding us, at 8.40pm we were ready to order and overheard one waitress say to the other wait staff don't take there order for another 10mins, I was furious and asked why we couldn't order and was told the kitchen had 50 orders before ours would be started, by that time it was close to 9pm when we ordered we had entrees and mains we were starving and ate what the kitchen had cooked even though the standard was poor I even had to send the garlic bread back as it was cold and the butter was still hard, our mains arrived around 9.45pm well how disappointed were we, I would have to say 12 out of the 14 people at the table weren't happy the fish and steaks were so overcooked they even looked dry before you cut into them, but by this time we were just over it and wanted to eat and go home very disappointing meal, it will be a long time before we as a group would go back.

Went there to try and found out it is best to book, however we had a couple of drinks whilst waiting for a seat and was not long before we were sitting down and ordering. I had the large rib eye and my wife had the lamb shanks and for sides we got fries in duck fat and vegies. Well the food was perfect and service exemplary. Learnt that next time to only order one side between us, as they are quite large. The food is in high price range, however for the quality of food and excellence of service it is well and truly worth it. Will definitely be going again

A group of 7 of us had booked for a late Mother's Day lunch. A little shaky at the start needing to flag down staff for drinks and water glasses but things really improved when the food arrived. Steaks as good as anywhere in Tassie and seafood that our guests all enjoyed. Overall, service was good and the atmosphere created by the funky warehouse fit out was great. No, not cheap but if that's what you are looking for stick to the many great pubs around Hobart. Will be back.

Had big expectations of this place and did not disappoint. If you are looking for a cheap meal then this certainly isn't the place. However if you are looking for sensational quality meals then go no further. Signature steaks ordered at my table and without doubt it was the best cooked steak I've ever had. And I eat a lot of steak. Perfectly cooked to my liking and melted in your mouth. The sides are quite big servings so I'd recommend each person getting a different one and sharing. Beers on tap and a little expensive. I'd suggest ordering wine by the bottle if you are going to have a couple. Service was also excellent with knowledgeable and courteous staff. Highly recommended. I'll be going back again.

My partner and I had heard about St Albi from friends but only just found the time to visit and can't believe something this awesome has opened in tassie! When we arrived we were amazed at the vibe and how busy the place, it was pumping (very Melbourne) then greeted by a lovely hostess, waitstaff were very friendly and knowledgable about the menu and wine list! Entrees were delicious and the steak was as good if not just better then the ball & chain restaurant in Salamanca! Well done and a awesome place we will be back very soon

I can empathise with the comments about the price in this place but you have to look past that. If you aren't going to eat here every week it's ok to splash out occasionally. The steaks are the specialty here however the seafood is also very good. My favourite is the cheeseburger. I know that's a bit odd for a fine dining restaurant but let me say it was THE tastiest burger I've ever eaten. That's a massive call and it only just edges out the burger I had in Alabama a couple of years ago. This is a must visit restaurant if you are heading to Hobart.

My bestfriend and I decided to go to Tasmania for the first time. It reminds us both of New Zealand. I love NZ so I just fell in love with Tassie. Enough about that, let's move on to St Albi. We were meeting a couple of ladies that my best friend met in her Europe trip and they both decided to bring us here. Such a lovely place, I just love the decor. It was very neat and spacious, such a chic place. The customer service was very good too, attentive staff! We went straight to ordering our mains as we wanted to have space for desserts later. For drinks I had the lemon lime and bitters and the bestie went for the elderflower and soda, both drinks were good. I had the Huon Valley Mushroom Risotto prosciutto shards with shaved parmesan and bestie went for Grilled Huon Tasmanian Salmon wild rice, wilted spinach, and ponzu dressing. Our mains were divine! I can't find fault to both, the portions were huge. As per plan, we had desserts too. We had the Raspberry Panacotta and honeycomb and the Poached Pear and salted caramel with vanilla bean ice cream. Let's just say that we had a wonderful experience and I highly recommend this place.

Went to St Albi as a party of 10 for dinner, I was surprised at how big and busy this latest "north of creek road" eatery was. There is a mixture of tables and benches available for seating, the bar takes centre stage and is an ideal pre dinner place for drinks, the menu is quite extensive with a few varieties of steaks listed as house specialties. I opted for an entree of calamari that was a bit too soft and a cheese burger that although tasty was a bit exxy The missus had the paella but didn't rate it ( bit bland ) I tried the pate and that was excellent and one of our party rated his steak as the best he had tried, the staff did a good job under a fair amount of pressure and were able to keep the fluids up to the table on a warm night!
All in All not too bad an evening, the prices are just on the high side and once
the fanfare of a new place dies down St Albi's should be on your list of places to try

Moonah is determined to be the next Western shore food destination. It has a beating village heart, unlike the suburbs that flank its Main Road borders, and local heroes like: Kawasemi Japanese Tea House, Salt and the Texas Pantry. Befitting its light industrial surroundings, a chic restaurant of concrete, steel and wood has risen out of an unassuming Albert Street warehouse.
