Review Uncle Jim - Mosman

Kevin Gomis
Fantastic Malaysian (with some Chinese and Nonya options) that is a clear local favourite. Authentic taste, large servings and great value. Assam Laksa was a stand out (great balance), Nasi Lemak with Kangkong was very good (Sambal was full of flavour), the Beef Rendang was just as tasty (nice slow burner heat) and came with a generous amount of Roti to match. Traditional Teh Tarik is made by Uncle as well. Interior is nothing special, but who cares. Suits families and groups. Chef will cater to requests and cook off-menu items with a few days notice. Recommended.

Jungle Jim Malaysian kitchen serves Malaysian dishes that are authentic. The curries have enough spices and herbal flavours like lemon grass, onions and galangal. Portions are enough. Authentic dishes. Prices reasonable. Worth a visit to the restaurant.

The place doesn't look very appealing from outside, but you will find traditional food made with the heart and at a reasonable price. We absolutely loved the entrees but unfortunately the main (we only ordered one) didn't impress us at all.

Laksa was too greasy for me, I didn't like it. Staff are nice though, and service is quick.

Don't look at the surroundings cause it truly doesn't reflect the food. To be honest the restaurant looks like a shit heap!! But the food is well above average. For a good Asian lunch it's worth a try!

Good everyday Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant in Northern Beaches. Fast service and convenient location. Love their crispy prawn but a bit pricey ($18 for 4pcs) their Hainanese Chicken Rice is tasty but shame that the rice is not included and it's served without ginger condiment and soup on the side..

Was looking forward to trying Uncle Jim, ordered take-away beef rendang & stir fry veg in sambal. First disappointment, the beef was tough which is a cardinal sin with rendang. I then pulled out 2 very long hairs from said rendang. First mouthful of veg stir fry I bit into something very hard (a rock I suspect) which then shattered into a million pieces, very fortunate not to damage any teeth. By this time I had lost my appetite and chucked it all in the bin. All in all a very bad experience.

From what I can find online Uncle Jim has been cooking for years and started in Penang and has cooked an consulted all over the world including Petaling Street and Sedap in Malaysia. A month ago I attended the Taste of Sydney Food Festival in Sydney and the fine folks from Dimmi Australia , the online restaurant reservation ap, had this amazing perspex box you could enter and feed butterflies, it was meant to represent getting butterflies again on your first date and we got to hold amazing butterflies and also feed them with a honey, sugar water soaked sponge that they sucked from, was a great experience, I did this with the lovely Tammi from Tea for Tammi (previously Insatiable Munchies). Dimmi had this cool thing that if you took a pic in the box, posted it and tagged them and then downloaded the ap they would give you $50 credit to use at a restaurant – guess where I spent my $50 voucher on Sunday? My meal at Uncle Jim Malaysian Kitchen came to $49. Thanks to the folks at Dimmi and Uncle Jim!! UNCLE JIM MALAYSIAN KITCHEN | SPOONING AUSTRALIA RESTAURANT REVIEW | STORE ENTRANCE The venue is welcoming, intimate, and suited to singles, couples and families, I sat near the front of the store by myself but a large Malaysian family of about a dozen or more people were having a larger banquet towards the back. The staff were very friendly and accommodating and the restaurant has the BEST menus I have seen so far in my food journeying. On nearly every page they have the recipe for the dish being advertised, they are full books with colour images of the dishes so you know what you are getting and the better part, the back of each menu has a comments section like BnBs

Uncle Jim started cooking in Penang and has cooked and consulted all over the world including for Petaling street and Sedap. Just opened in March but so far so good. Generally authentic food on this sitting aside from the apple salad which we think is more Thai (although Penang has a fair bit of Thai).

Nasi Lemak with Chicken Curry. We had a meal. I ordered nasi lemak with chicken curry, they gave me beef curry. I wasn't sure whether it was beef or chicken. My husband confirmed it was chicken. The more I ate, the more I realised it was beef. I didn't eat the last piece. I didn't enjoy the meal. I should have reconfirmed with them. Anyway, I was very disappointed with the wrong dish. They apologised and wanted to give chicken, I said it was too late.

Don't think I will go back there again.

Hainanese Chicken. Tender steamed chicken served with rich chicken flavour rice. It is one of the World's most delicious dishes.

Tofu with broccoli and dried radish. The saltiness of the dried radish worked well with the soft tofu. Best eaten with white rice.

-----28 Sep, 2014-----

Teh tarik. Finally a great Malaysian on the Lower North Shore!. We went here on a Sunday night with a large group so had the chance to try a good selection of the menu. Every dish we had was fantastic and very well priced. As a bonus its full BYO including beers.

Some stand outs include Singapore Chilli Softshell crab, Beef Rendang, Fish with Apple and Chilli and the Chicken Satays.

The owners are very welcoming and will make you feel at home.

Looking forward to making this one of our regulars.
