Review Boronia House - Mosman

Barbara You
Second time to Boronia House for high tea, have loved it both times. The Service is fantastic from booking/phone calls/dietary requirements to on the day service. Food is delicious and always more than enough, it’s nice how they change the menu seasonally. The setting is relaxed, perfect for a long lazy afternoon! Highly recommend and would definitely come back.

Bought a high tea set for two from Groupon. Very appreciate the food quality except the desserts. Their scones, sandwiches and pastries were beautiful. However I think there can be improvement for the sweets. The lady who serve us was very nice. Will definitely recommend to my friends come have a visit.

We celebrated our combined 60th Birthday at Boronia House and have received many compliments from our guests. Everyone said that they were the BEST scones they’ve EVER eaten. Beatrice and the other staff were extremely attentive & helped everything run smoothly. Nothing seemed to be a problem for them. They even found masking tape and Blu-tac that we’d forgotten, to hang our decorations. Guests with allergies were happy and full as were all guests. We had the lovely private room upstairs with access to the balcony which was perfect. Thanks John for listening well to our needs. This venue is highly recommended & we’ll be back again.

We had our wedding here, in the day time and between the food, the setting, the service & the weather, it was absolutely perfect. John - the manager - is so accommodating & makes every part of the planning so easy. We just went back on the weekend to celebrate out 1 year anniversary and the new chef Blake is outstanding. Cannot wait to go back to try their new high tea options :). The food is SO yummy and the setting is just beautiful.

Such a shame this place is now closed. Mum and i visited on a trip up from Melbourne last year. Mum said the next trip she'd quite happily make just to visit this place. It was a lovely experience, faultless, lovely food, staff and ambience. It's also very disappointing to read some people with very few reviews under their belt give 1 star and an eruption of hate. Perhaps they could try writing a nice review one-day it might give them some inner peace. So sorry that Covid got the better of this place. You've obviously made a lot of people happy during your time of trading. I wish you all the luck in the world for any new adventures. 💐

Lovely setting and decent food but the service is severely lacking in comparison to other high tea venues in Sydney. We waited until our teas were cold to find out that the kitchen never received our order. People who came at the same time as us finished and left before we got our food. We had to ask the wait staff twice before we were told that there was a confusion with the order. The wait staff completely forgot about us and seem to lack training. We won’t be visiting again.

This beautiful heritage home is an oasis in the midst of traffic chaos. We were seated by one of the open French doors overlooking the garden which was really lovely. The service was really good. We were given a choice of when we wanted our tea (of which there was a huge selection) etc. glasses replenished with water and the food was generous and delicious. Love the china. We will definitely return. The atmosphere was relaxing, the food great, staff attentive, what more could you want.

Extremely average high tea - both my friend and I left things uneaten, or took a mouthful and could not finish it. Served a soup as part of the selection - was not advised to eat it first as it was warm so by the time we got to it, it was congealed cold broccoli soup. Very beautiful property, that could be super popular if the standard of high tea was better. Was very quiet on the Saturday afternoon we went. Most disappointing high tea I've been too, and I've been working my way through most of them in Sydney. Edit: good to see the owner takes in constructive criticism well! And also is taking time to read all the other negative reviews being given. I'm even more sorry now that I paid Boronia House a visit, but never again and I'll be sure to pass this information on to as many people as I can.

We had a lovely High Tea to celebrate Mum’s 88th birthday. Lovely food and ambience . We enjoyed having our tea with teapots and fine China teacups . Mum asked if we can come back next year !!!

We came here a weekend on a Groupon deal of $158 for sparkling high tea for 4 people. For the price we paid, it was a great deal but I would have been disappointed if I had paid full price. First the positives, the house is gorgeous and I love the old style and original decor inside as well as outside. It's on a main busy road but the house is tucked away from the hustle and bustle so you feel you are in a relaxing setting. The place gets a lot of light which helps create a nice ambience. I had a great time catching up and chatting to my lady friends and we were there for a good few hours. The place was fairly empty and the staff let us be. Great selection of teas. It was hard to decide with that many good choices. Coming from London, I am used to fantastic high teas and unfortunately, I thought the food was very average. None of the food items stood out which is a shame. The sandwiches looked and tasted ordinary. Same for the sweet items. The scones were tasty but on the dry side. And proper clotted cream is a rare commodity in Australia! The service was okay but as someone mentioned, it wasn't exactly well explained what each item was. I don't think the place is very organized. When I booked, I received an email confirmation but then a few days later, received another email confirmation for a booking for 2 people for another day under my name. I had to call to get the extra confirmation cancelled and make sure they still had me booked for the first email confirmation I received. Then, after we had gone to high tea, I received yet another email booking confirmation for another future date ...

Delicious high tea here, we were very happy to be sitting in such a beautiful place eating scrumptious food. The atmosphere was gorgeous, but the service could be improved - it took a while to call over our waitress but we were there at a busy time.

Lovely location on Military Road in a stunning old colonial homestead surrounded by manicured gardens and flowers. We had a high tea there and whilst it was a lovely setting, it was strangely quiet with the staff leaving us alone. The tea selection is pretty straight forward without too much fancy stuff.  There is a lot of sweet on the plates and disappointingly very little savoury items. The kids menu is pretty nice and includes fairy bread. I've been to a lot of high tea spots and this is reasonably priced but needs a little work on the content/presentation/staff. I'll try again soon to see if its improved.

Beautiful heritage house on the super busy Military Road. What a nice oasis in the middle of chaos. However, the house is about the best thing of the afternoon (company excepted). Despite the nice surround, the food itself was a bit of a let down. The bread of the sandwich fingers were dried on one side, like they've been left out for a while. The filling wasn't particularly exciting, I didn't like the pickle one at all. The rest of the savouries were average. The sweets were a little better, I can't tell you what they are, as the waiter that served us didn't seem to know either. By far the best part of the high tea were the mini scorns, served warm, light, it was just the right size for the best ratio of cream & jam. We got a groupon deal for the High Tea, but I won't be back even if the deal was available again.

A traditional english mansion set along the busy military road is the last place I would expect to find a tea room but the place offers perfect escape from the hustle and bustle outside its front gates.<br/><br/>We ordered the classic high tea, which came with a selection of petit fours, finger sandwiches, cakes and scones. My favourites were the goats cheese and sundried tomato tarts and the salmon blinis. I wasn't quite expecting pasta salad as a petit four though. <br/><br/>Quite enjoyed the scones as it was quite soft and airy but perhaps not as crumbly as I would have liked. On the dessert end, the raspberry tart and chocolate mousse were also quite delightful. The rest of the items tasted average but overall the entire tray was quite delectable.<br/><br/>Its a great place to bring a close one for afternoon tea or have an event such as a baby shower. Staff here are exceptionally accommodating. They took time to explain all the menu elements and carefully catered to all of our plentiful dietary requirements.

If you can get a discount voucher (as we did), this is a lovely high tea with some truly sublime scones on offer. The house and grounds are neat and the food is good - but neither spectacular enough to warrant the extra dollars involved.<br/><br/>Had we paid full price, I am confident we would have been disappointed with the offering - however at the price we actually paid, we were pretty happy with what we got.

The Boronia House was a delightful location for a gift to my best friend. The service can be improved, but the food was lovely and the table-wear was adorable. Extra cream and jam was requested for the mini scones, and they did not disappoint. The variety of tastes provided mingled wondrously, and this accompanied with the beautiful setting made the experience much more delightful. If you're looking for a sweet little gathering with delectable treats, then the Boronia House is the place for you.

The food is nothing sophisticated and very poor in variety (no cakes but many scones)<br/>The staff was servings us and cleaning the windows.<br/>The house itself beautiful perfectly to the idea of high tea but sadly just doesn't deliver anything.😓😓

B O R O N I A ☆ T E A ☆ R O O M<br/>This is such a random house in the middle of Mosman! They serve high tea inside this beautiful Manor. Unfortunately, true they high tea. Not very tasty and this is the first place where I had to pay extra for a re-fill of tea! Outrageous. ✌ @foodiesguidetosydney

Went for Sparkling High Tea. Location is lovely however service is terrible and the food doesn't quite make up for it. Took a long time to be served, waited a further 10mins to get milk and sugar with our tea while all the waitstaff avoided catching my eye. <br/>Food is beautifully presented however lacking in flavour and finesse. Sandwiches were quite plain and petit fours weren't very nice. Scones were dry, but the jam was delicious and extra jam and cream was provided upon request! An okay choice for High Tea, but was left feeling a little disappointed.
A Food Fable
Last Saturday, D2D and I headed off to Mosman for a sparking high tea brunch at Boronia Tea Rooms. We found some street parking (free on weekends) in one of the side streets and then walked. The Boronia Tea Rooms is a hard place to miss along Military Road. It’s a beautiful historic mansion with manicured lawns and hedges.
A Food Fable
A beautiful mansion on the outside but inside the ambience is really lacking. Teas are all just from T2 and served in grey boring mini teapots. The cups are at least quite nice. Food is below average. I can think of many better high teas I have been to. We were also seated next to what looked like the office of the business with computers and a guy cutting out menus. Killed the ambience.

Disappointing. I would not recommend Boronia Tea House. There is much better quality high tea being served at other venues in Sydney. I took my family there recently and it was an underwhelming experience. This is my feedback: <br/><br/>Cons: <br/>- Food: The sandwiches appeared to have been sitting out for a while because they were not soft and fresh as one would expect. They were stale and dry. The scones were very average to say the least. Couch foam came to mind when I was eating it. The rest of the cakes were average. <br/>- Cleanliness: My teacup had lipstick on the rim and I had to ask for a replacement. The women's toilet was very surprising... It was a shabby and out of the three stalls only one worked. One was out of order and the second had a faulty door which was falling off the hinge. <br/><br/>Pros:<br/>- Our waiter was very friendly <br/>- The tea itself was nice<br/><br/>For $47p/p I expect more than what they delivered. Overall the venue needs a spruce up visually and food wise. However, with more attention to detail and a bit more TLC I think that the Boronia Tea House has the potential to be a great experience in the future.

The crispy crunchy topping went so well with the creamy cheese and the flavoursome mushroom. Mmm yum!

Average. I picked this tea house as it featured in a few top lists for high tea in Sydney and thought it would be something different to try. The pictures on the Internet made the place look like a charming old mansion but the reality was less than ideal. Despite making reservations we were put in the Backroom with no view and out table was wobbly and the tea cup on my table chipped. The food was over priced and lacked flavour. The service was passable although not sure how we felt about the hip hop music being played in the background. We left after 30 minutes so we could do something else and not waste our time at this lifeless venue. We were not asked by the staff if we enjoyed the meal or not.

Pretty venue, good scones but not much else. Boronia Tea Rooms is a picturesque federation-style house with manicured grounds, making it seem like the ideal venue for a traditional high tea. However, that was probably the best part of the afternoon. The Devonshire tea set arrived on a 3-tiered stand. Each person had a macaron (soggy) and marshmallow-meringue bite (too sweet, reminiscent of an Eskimo) on the top tier; followed by 2 scones each with double cream and jam on the next; with the last tier holding bite-sized versions of a chicken sandwich (just a smear of filling), an egg salad scroll and a shortbread topped with goats cheese. Most of the food was average to below average and the size of the sandwiches were inconsistent. The saving grace for that stand were the beautifully light scones. The tea set comes with your choice of T2 tea and unlimited refills. <br/>Our stand was initially delivered without the chicken sandwiches but the waitress insisted that was correct. We pointed out that the menu said otherwise and only then did she bring us the missing item. Staff were rarely in the dining room so it was difficult to get any service or refills.

I loved it!. I see negative reviews about this place and I just don't get it. I went for my birthday with a friend for high tea. The food and tea was just great and perfect quantity. <br/>The girl that served us was attentive but not at all hovery or pushy. Our glasses were always full, she has impeccable timing.<br/>Loved it, will go again

I had "high tea" with my mother yesterday.<br/>Staff were helpful despite the place.<br/>Surely a tea room should provide adequate disabled access. Boronia does not. Ramp then entrance step.<br/>Sparkling nasty but expensive. Pastries etc very disappointing. Credit card surcharge.......<br/>Not an hospitable experience.
Emma
Worst Experience ever, ruined my Mother's Day! Overpriced! Bad service and food was appalling! Will never go back again!
Sally
The Devonshire tea is amazingly good value, includes sandwiches, scones & some little pastries with generous lashings of cream & jam. The service was very good, of course it was a quiet day (Monday).

We thought to celebrate Mothers Day at a high tea venue we had not tried. No wonder we hadn't stumbled across it before, it was terrible. The worst I've ever had and I an count at least 10 other venues I've visited in the past 18<br/>months. We booked, got ignored by John at the front desk who was trying to persuade a staff member to 'sell' the table that had just cancelled, a greater emphasis placed on this than the serve the queue of waiting patrons. Overall terrible service from what appeared to be borrowed hospitality staff, terrible and stingy food options, over priced, crammed in, non-authentic, uncaring and overall a disaster. I even bought the 'little ladies high tea' for $26, there was a quarter a piece of fairy bread, a micro scone, no real food, a marshmallow and pink (flat) lemonade. Save your money and time. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Worst high tea ever! I have been to several high teas and this time decided to book Boronia for Mother's Day... What a mistake. High tea is the only thing they do here so you'd think they'd get it right. There was so little food offered and most of the offerings were pre-bought, mass produced cake, pastry cases and the hardest cookie I've ever nearly broken my teeth on. The three tiered plates that these tiny morsels are served on are so ridiculously high that you can't see the rest of your company. Epic fail Boronia!

Very disappointing!. We had my Hen's High Tea there last Saturday and it was very disappointing. No staff and extremely slow service meant I didn't even get a cup of tea for an hour and a half and we were only allowed 2 hours. We were surrounded by little girls squealing with their High Tea Birthday parties ( most inappropriate!) and the food was very overpriced. I'm sure all the ladies that attended will never return to Boronia House.

Sophisticated ???. Amazing to see two reviews posted the day after mine raving about the food and both using the same language....sophisticated ! Sounds like a set-up to me !<br/>Really.<br/>Sorry but you are outnumbered here - just look at how many poor reviews there have been in recent months and work out what is really served up ( or not served up ).<br/>Thank you Boronia Tea House for replying, as in not, to my email sent last week !<br/><br/><br/>-----29 Mar, 2014-----<br/><br/>Forget the other reviews - none are as bad as mine. Change the name immediately to Faulty Towers. Twenty guests rocked up for a hen's day to enjoy the tiniest portions of cakes and almost non-existent sandwiches you have ever seen but with a whole plate of scones - did I forget to mention the jam and cream to accompany the scones was only a third filled. Forget the tea - our last pot of tea ( for the bride to be of all people) arrived ten minutes before our afternoon tea ended. Most other people got theirs twenty to thirty minutes before, it was like pulling teeth. Wait staff were thin on the ground, two for the whole venue which on a Saturday is ludicrous. The manageress on duty did not crack a smile all day and could be seen running constantly from the kitchen to tables trying to keep up with orders and tea. The FREE bottle of champagne as promised by way table advertising in front of us never arrived even though it was requested twice. I can only presume the lady that passed out in the toilets did so from lack of food and drink. Even then the manageress had to be seriously prompted to call and ambulance , obviously it delayed other peoples service even more !! Unbelievable, I should have videos the whole scenario for Utube

Miserable tea. We were 9 re.... Miserable afternoon tea experience.<br/>We were 9 ready to celebrate a birthday and like others found this a most mean and miserable tea served by miserable and disinterested staff.<br/>Someone should tell them that finger sandwiches are not supposed to be the width of an anorexics index finger and canapés are supposed to be bigger than a postage stamp. "Cake" was a sliver - less than half a postage stamp, and someone should show them how to make a scone (they are not supposed to be that tiny! And who thought up the idea that for three people you serve 5 of these tiny offerings . Surely 6 could have been managed?). <br/>The whole experience was Lilliputian in its proportions.<br/>Good grief, it was really terrible. We had to ask for the tea menu and then ask for the tea to be served ...it was afternoon tea after all, and they were not busy.<br/>The final horror was the garage collection in the street to the side - on a Sunday. The stench was not a great way to finish the afternoon.<br/>I know this is the Prime Minister's electorate but does afternoon tea have to mirror the mean policies of his government? Very poor.<br/>My recommendation is avoid this place!!

Poor tiny portions. Went there last year lovely great size portions went away full went yesterday<br/> So disappointed<br/>Tiny portions went away hungry would not go again it was a lot 39 dollars for what they give you
Lostmeathello
Never again. I booked a family function for 20 people @ $39 a head, all up $1200($350 just for the room on top). The function was to last 2 hrs. The food and drinks came out 35 minutes before the end of the function, after many, many request to staff on it's whereabouts. The scones crumbled and were stale, the sandwiches had formed hard crusts, wait staff (all 2 for the entire premises) could not tell us what was in them, the portions minuscule. If we were lucky there was about $8 of food on each platter, I was bitterly disappointed and spent the entire 2 hrs apologizing to guests about the poor state of the food.<br/>I wanted a vintage style morning tea, vintage all right! food was probably a week old and the tea was served in Japanese style teapots in Wedgewood style cups. This was my 3rd time @ Boronia House, sadly will be my last. Furthermore they lost my reservation 3 times, the premises only has 1 bathroom up a flight of stairs; do not take the elderly there.<br/><br/>Mosman council should be ashamed of this venue and what they have done to a historic building.
Gourmet Traveller
Bad experience. Boronia Tea Room advertises on its website that you don't need a booking. We arrived at 2:45pm and were met by a man who told us that it was 3pm, that we should always book and that the chef had to go home in 45 minutes. He then walked away from us.<br/><br/>Given that Boronia Tea Room specialises in high tea and part of the high tea experience is good service, we have lost all desire to try it.<br/><br/>We drove down the road to Burnt Orange and highly recommend the experience and the food (see separate review).
Food Adventurer
Nothing special and not worth your money for a $39pp 12 pieces. It was so noisy there. But the scones were not bad other than that nothing to shout about.
Lisa
Wonderful experience. As our group includes a vegan and several young children we often struggle to find somewhere suitable to go out. However, Will (the venue manager) and the chef were most accommodating and this ensured we all had a wonderful experience. The gardens around the venue are an added bonus, especially on a day with such beautiful weather - as we had.

Function at Boronia House. Very ordinary service and food. Traffic noise and NO atmosphere
