Review Sampoorna Vegetarian Surprise - Mount Waverley

Raja Lakshman
A very nice Indian restaurant serving vegetarian, vegan, no onion, gluten free, jain .... as per customer's dietary needs. Good service and tasty food. Lots of parking nearby. Thanks

We regularly order from Sampoorna and Absolutely love it. Pani puri is delicious as are the curries cooked lovingly by a husband and wife team. A warm welcome by beautiful people.

Overpriced and Unhygienic vegetarian ($14 for a cup of potato, raita and achar set), with strands of long hair in the balloon bread. I wonder what sorts of fungus goes with the hair strands in the food. I threw it all away.

This is a must visit restaurant if your in Melbourne looking for pure vegetarian Indian food. Located in the suburb of Mount Waverly and away from the noisy city street, this place offers great Indian vegetarian cuisine at very affordable prices. This restaurant has won many awards for it's hygeine, cleanliness and taste including The Shop of the Year in the city of Whitehorse's food hygeine Assessment Award. The hospitality is great as well and mostly importantly they offer food of great taste which reminded me of true Indian flavours. I tried Gobi Manchurian and it was finger licking amongst others. Their self made Mango Lassi and Mango ice cream were sumptuous.. Everyone else with me were very happy with the food they ordered and we we're fully satisfied. I strongly suggest to visit this place at least once and trust me you will be regular here.

Bad experience. They charge for drinking water, takeaway boxes everything.Food was mediocre, our home paneer tastes way better.Less quantity,a plate of gobi manchurian had hardly 4-5 pieces. The menu on the website shows less rates as compared to the actual rate.

If you want to taste what a typical Indian family eats at home, visit Sampoorna vegetarian restaurant. Unlike commercial kitchens, this place cooks food fresh and therefore it tastes really good. Since the restaurant is run by a family, and is not a usual kitchen, you are expected to self serve your own cutlery, water etc. Only the food gets served on the table. I longed for a little more quantity, which is something that the restaurant can improve on. A single dish is barely enough for two people. Although you may find the prices at par of marginally higher than other Indian restaurants. Parking is available right in front of the restaurant. Advance booking is recommended. Overall, loved the food and would expect the restaurant to consider quantity part of the food.

Overpriced for the quality of food we ate. The “roti” seemed like tortilla from the supermarket. We were sitting there chewing it like cows cus it was so hard and chewy. The lady who served was very courteous and made us feel welcome though.

I tried mushroom butter masala take away. I don't know about other dishes, but it was not at all good!! No taste, completely bland.
Marissa
Delicious food and friendly staff! The portions are large and are a great value for the money. We loved that all of the options were vegetation and there were so many to choose from!

This place is small. We were a group of eight. They had to pull tables together to fit us.
Anyways, food was yummy. Freshly made breads were served piping hot! We ordered lots as the servings weren’t that much. Will definitely though.
Just finished dinning at this place. Enjoyed aloo tiki and papri chat for starters. For mains we ordered rajma, jackfruit dish and palak kofta along with gluten free bread and rice. We really enjoyed every dish. Service is also very friendly. Will be back.

Sampoorna isn't one of those places you'd plan to gather your family and go to. Not very spacious and looks very cramped if most tables are occupied.

+ Food is fresh
+ Completely vegetarian
+ Good menu on offer
+ Parking

- portions are not great
- Pricey for the over-all quality or portions
- elbow room dining
- inconsistent with some dishes (taste, texture)

Final Word: A good place to consider especially if you are looking for a 100% vegetarian option. The food can be hit-and-miss from one visit to another. The portions don't justify the price.

Went here for a lunch on weekend and ordered 2 mains ($13), 2 types of bread ($3 and $5) , 2 serves of entrees ($7 each) and the total was $60 when it should be $50 max. I think that's very expensive considering that they are vegetarian meals and we didn't get a bill detailing the charges of each item. The food was alright but nothing really stood out. We were also asked to leave before finishing our food because they are closing the shop in the afternoon...

This is a great vegetarian restaurant. The staff are friendly and can really help customise for any dietary requirements (but best if you ring a day ahead if you have specific needs). They can also cater for no onion and no garlic. The food has always been consistent and very tasty.

I have mixed reviews about this restaurant. It is located in the middle of a residential suburb where you see less crowd and less pollution. You can call it as a hidden gem.

They usually close for about a month in an year, so always call and check if they are open. As it is not located near busy streets, parking is accessible and you always get one, possibly always opposite to the restaurant. The staff extends their hearty welcome. It is a small place and can accommodate only 16 customers at once. So always call and book your table prior. Seatings are comfortable with a touch of light relaxing music

We ordered Bombay chaat called Bhel Puri, felt like it was marinated in jaggery and was very sweet.

When we ordered the main course, looking at the price we assumed that we will get food in abundance, but it was all false hope. We had to repeat the order THRICE just to have a feel of the foods taste. Quantity is VERY VERY less and definitely not proportionate to the price. Staff take time and interest in explaining the ingredients of the food contents. I felt like this Indian restaurant is targeted ONLY to attract non-Indian crowd so that they can get the hang of Indian food. Taste could also have been better and Indian flavors were missing in food.

Extremely poor quantity of food for the price. Panneer starter was only cubes of paneer not even marinated. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

The main dish quantity i also well below par. These guys are a rip off

The food is certainly good. No doubts. The ambience, service, taste everything is good. The only thing that is poor for the price is the quantity. For an average eater like me, i feel it is too much when i have to order 2 naan, 2 sides and 2 starters, where in general i am usually full with 1 naan and 1 starter.

I felt hungry even after eating the above said. The portions were lesser than kids meal.

I feel the portions are certainly not worth the price. Won’t be visiting this place again.

This is the second time we are returning to this restaurant. As with the previous one, the food was quite tasty. However I am so disappointed that the quantity has been exceptionally poor/less.

To give an example, we ordered Paneer Takatak (Entree’) that costs $7. It has exactly 7 pieces of Paneer (small cubes as you receive in frozen pack) with some tomato, lettuce leaves and some cucumber.

The story remains the same for main course too. Have shown the size of the vessel for example. Naan was like roti.

We a family of 6 (incl. one kid) ordered food (4 mains, 8 naan, one vegetable biriyani, 4 starters).

Mind you, three are poor eaters, two medium eaters and one who is average. And yet we all return home with half stomach. For $110, 6 people returned half stomach.

Don’t think we will come again unless they do something about quantity. Otherwise it isn’t worth a visit for the money being spent.

Probably the worst Indian I've had - we ordered $60 worth of food - and the two of us were still starving at the end of it. The portion are tiny for the price they charge, and there isn't much flavour at all!

Rating is mainly based on my comparison of its food what it used to be to what it is now, they used to be near Deakin Uni on stephensons road and we loved 2 things mainly, chole bhature and palak kofta, these items were so good that I haven't come across same taste in my time in Melbourne. Based on the same experience, I went there few years later when they re-opened in mount Waverley and food was no where near what it used to be. I was greatly disappointed as my expectations were very high, having said that service was good and it gives you homely feeling. I will try them one more time to see if I can find same taste again.

Went there with friends and the food was very average not worth what you pay for it . Plus the nan breads felt like they were brought from coles . Very bland food .

A lovely family-run restaurant which offers delicious food for a more than reasonable price. The portions are really generous. You should definitely try the palak paneer and samosas ❤

Love this place! Run by a small family, very homely feeling (because it is literally at the back/front of their own house). The dad of the family is very warm and welcoming and is a great host every time my family visit. They are my place to go when I'm craving good vegetarian food. Cannot go past some good old Chole Bhature (ask for it, go on!)

Great Indian vegetarian/vegan restaurant in suburban Melbourne. Friendly service and amazing food. Would definitely recommend and I will return.
@jessfrazz
Lucky Star
The place felt a bit cold. Food was average and the service was extremely slow. Good selection of vegetarian dishes. Wouldn't be rushing to get back there again.

A great little Indian restaurant tucked away in suburbia. The resturant is very small and run by a very friendly family, particularly the son who is the main waiter there. It definitely isn't the most classy resturant, but is neat, clean and casual.
The food is generally great and we've probably tried about a third of the menu now without any real disappointments - definitely try the onion bhaji if you go, that's a must for us.
The menu is all vegetarian and most of the dishes can be done vegan - the also cater for jain and other dietary requirements.

Best indian ever. I ate here about two weeks ago, and I am still trying to find an excuse to go back! As a vegan, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they could easily cater for me. The food was fresh and tasty, and the heat was exactly what we asked for. Highly recommended!

I don't know what's happened to this restaurant in terms of using frozen soggy veggies instead of the fresh veggies? At $13 for a small container of puréed spinach and frozen vegetables I have to say I am disappointed and won't be coming back. We were looking forward to eating in and once we tasted the soggy card boards veggies we stopped eating it. Bring fresh back and we are definitely in!

Sampoorna is a great vegetarian restaurant in the suburbs. The staff is incredibly friendly, especially Shaboom (sorry for the possible spelling error).
The food is delicious and there is a great variety of vegan options.
Highly recommended.
:-)

Best Indian Vegetarian. Sampoorna is the first Indian vegetarian restaurant I've ever known in my culinary trails of 25 years that offers four types of vegetarian styles. It's thought through food in that great care is taken to make that difference. This is what most of us remember later... that 'edge'. If you want arty surrounds and atmosphere, go to a museum. Sampoorna are so welcoming and keen to adjust to your vegetarian type whether vegan, satwic etc It's truly food cooked with love and not stereotypical Indian overloaded with spices and saturated with garlic! I feel garlic and onion is like the counterpart to msg and detracts from real individual flavour like offered at Sampoorna. Well done! And such courteous owners... Just so rare these days. Thank you.
Russell.

Homely vegetarian in suburbia. A cute little Indian family restaurant in the suburbs. Great food, friendly service and reasonable prices. Have dined there several times and it's always good.

Vegetarian at its Best!. The whole family was welcomed into a nice and homely atmosphere. The food was out of this world! Our Top two favourites were the Mushroom Methi and the Soya Tikka. Mushroom methi was comfort food at its best and the soya tikka was mouthwatering (tasted like a healthy chicken tikka which was perfect for the little ones). Would recommend this too all our friends and family!

Friday Night Dissapointment. I have been to this restaurant a few times now. The service is inconsistent. If they don't have many customers, you will be treated well but boy if they have more than 2 tables booked, watch out. Nice atmosphere but won't be going back to this little restaurant

Low standards. Not worth the money.

Disappointing and derogatory service. We are NOT going back!. Today we stepped in for dinner and we were instructed to write down our own order. We were given a notepad and a pen. We just felt that we were treated disrespectfully. We should have walked out when we were told that we needed to write down our order however we stayed, ordered our food and just managed to swallow it down as quickly as possible. We paid $60.00 for 2x people and we have spent close to $1000.00 at this restaurant in the past.
Perhaps we are were too loyal. Not sure if writing your own order down is standard practice. If this is the service we should be looking forward to after being so loyal, we will not be returning. What a shame that people are too busy to serve us as true customers but every ready to take our money. It's just a horrible feeling because my idea of going to a restaurant used to be a luxury of people serving us however it appears that my idea is incorrect (especially when a restaurant like Sampoorna gets busy).

A real shame considering this used to be our favourite local restaurant. I will be looking for a new place to visit now.

New favourite Indian take-out. After hearing friends talk about this gem and reading the reviews we decided to give Sampoorna ago and boy am I glad we did. Fresh, simple and tastes homemade... Great option for a healthier indian place as they don't dunk their curries in oil and cream...

Vegan Heven. We have always loved Indian food and when we became vegan it was hard to find. Sampoorna is not only very vegan friendly but is also so delicious. We are looking forward to going back and sampling more of the menu. The staff was very nice and attentive.

Simone. This is a family operated business - simple setting. Very nice family. Boy do they know how to cook! Try the mixed vegetable, spinach kofta and lemon rice. Their dhal is fantastic. Some exotic dishes too - like jack fruit...yum.
Surya
Fresh and excellent taste. Great customer service. Love the food. Highly recommended.

FRESH is better than FROZEN!. I dined there last night for the first time. Was pleased with the flavours of the dishes, portions were small and a little pricey considering it's 'vegetarian'. The service was good. The timing that some of the dishes came out in a was a little out of whack. We got our steamed rice dish at the end when we had no other dishes left to eat it with. Most of the vegetables were of the 'frozen packet mix' variety, which was a little disappointing due to the nature of the business being all about VEGETABLES! I don't think I will be returning, but if you are looking for a vegetarian restaurant in that area then it's not an unpleasant option. Hope that makes sense and you find this review helpful.

Great food, Great service and Great Value. Went to Sampoorna Vegetarian Surprise for another meal tonight - and it was fantastic. The meals are all fresh and tasty - and the samosas are delicious and generous in size. Finally, the dessert was great! The restaurant is cozy and warm - and the service is attentive! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is keen to give vegetarian dining a go!

Great Vegetarian Indian. Great food. Gluten free options available. Great service. You don't get that heavy feeling like you do from most Indian restaurants. Highly recommended.

Pretty crappy service. Very rude.

Best Vegetarian Indian Food Restaurant in Melbourne!. Food is fresh, tasty and the restaurant has a nice homely ambience. Highly recommended. Will be good if they add some new flavors and new dishes to the menu

Worst restaurant to go to. Very poor service. Even the basic dhal wasn't cooked properly. I can make better tasting shall at home
Would not ever recommend this to anyone. Went there for wedding anniversary dinner and what a flop it was.
Expensive Delicious Habit.

Delicious food in reasonable price. Very friendly owners, delicious food , we like every thing but must try Malai kofta, mixed chat and pista kulfi. Best place for even Jain vegetarians, very accommodating.

"Total" Suprise. This restaurant does not have fancy decor, but the food is delicious. The staff are helpful. They can be busy, even on a Monday night, so it might be an idea to book, as the eat-in area is not large..

Great Place, Great Food. Lovely food, good price, they even grind their own spices.

Enjoy this place

Sampoorna. Small restaurant run by lovely family who were very willing to help. Small dishes (mains), but prices very reasonable. We tried things we'd never heard of before and were pleasantly surprised - interesting flavours (in a good way). Good place for those not used to vego food - very flavoursome.

Small family owned restaurant, but very nice food! Small serving size for mains though, but the taste makes up for it. Some stuff is a little too salty and needs to be eaten with rice or naan. Sweet lassi strongly recommended. Would definitely go back again!
Enlightened0ne
Serving sizes are a bit small, but the food is delicious! Don't leave without trying the sweet lassi!
