Review Kyushu Japanese Restaurant - Neutral Bay

Luana Zanetti
Nice place, quite crowded. I am not expert in Japanese food but everything is freaking good. They have dishes that you can’t usually find in the other Japanese restaurants Highly recommended

Kyushu is a no frills and unpretentious Japanese Restaurant. The food is authentic and delicious and requires no gimmicks! Nigiri sushi was perfectly made and the tonkatsu was super fresh and crispy. (Wish the pork was slightly fattier) Overall a great place for authentic Japanese food but make sure to book in advance as it gets quite busy on a Saturday night.

This place is better for its hot dishes (pork maki was good), don't bother with the sushi. Tempura was also interesting - they used shredded carrots. It was literally 10 pieces of shredded carrot and whole heap of batter. Do not recommend the tempura.

A great easy place for reasonably priced yummo japanese food. I like the pork maki and the sashimi platters. Takeaway is also great. Bookings required as it gets really busy. I take friends for the sukinabe which is also great!

Love the food! Make sure you book coz the restaurant gets really busy especially on the weekend.

Really impressed all the tasty food! Especially the teriyaki beef. Very busy at rush hour, I would suggest booking a table first:)

Terrible service, not adhering to the social distancing rules AT ALL, 2 of our mains took one hour since ordering to arrive. We arrived at 6pm, being told when I booked that we had to leave by 730pm. However our mains arrived at 7.12pm so I asked the waitress whether we still had to leave at 730 given it took 1 hour for them to come. When I pointed this out, the waitress gave me a stink eye / rolled her eyes at me!!! Outrageous. I was really unimpressed with the food as well given the price and also as this place is packed out most nights so I had high expectations. Really underwhelming, terrible untasty pieces of sashimi... Sushi rolls had no flavour and just loads of rice.."large" sake was probably 200mL or so... A complete rort!!!! A MUST VISIT - for COVID MARSHALLS !!!! We were packed like sardines and staff not wearing masks or anything. Terrible experience, terrible food, terrible evening, I will never go back.

Been to many Japanese restaurants in my life in several countries including Japan, Kyushu is right up there with my top favourites. This establishment in Neutral Bay is a must visit. Do remember to make a booking, it’s always busy. They do pretty awesome sashimi and sushi. But the thing to rave about is the teriyaki dishes they have. The chicken one was a real winner. Lightly battered and pan fried till crispy. Coated with a teriyaki sauce that is literally THE best teriyaki sauce ever. Let’s not compare the sauce to top yakitori places, those sauces are of a different class. Kyushu’s teriyaki sauce is divine. Perfect sweetness, saltiness and of course umami. The deep fried octopus is almost as good as the chicken. A real dilemma for me. Honestly I would think any of the teriyaki dishes would be awesome. Do yourself a favour, go with an expectation to eat something good and you will end the meal feeling great. Thank you Kyushu.

Went here due to the high review but turns out to be average. Great big portion and fairly priced but the taste was average.

This is my go-to place whenever I crave Japanese lunch boxes (and that's very often!). Its about 10 mins from me so I am always here to the point the staff remembers my order by heart. The food is great and the price is very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this place!!!

This place has been an all time favorite. The quality and the taste of the food stays consistent throughout the years. Ive been going to this place a lot for nearly 10 years now. Love their special teriyaki sauce, its house-made and you cant get it anywhere else. This place is always packed during lunch time. Best to book before coming.

My family and I have been coming here for the last 15yrs several times a month. Honestly the best teriyaki chicken in Sydney. Would also recommend the agaedashi tofu for starters and the pork maki and wafu steak.

We went on a Friday night and made a reservation so we do not need to wait. The restaurant is very busy and also quite loud so it’s not a place to go to catch up with your friends. The sashimi is fresh and agedashi tofu and pork maki are awesome but the main dishes - teriyaki beef and spicy pork are only average. The dishes don’t come with rice so you have to order them separately. The price is overall reasonable.

Great neighbourhood gem! Food is always fresh and perfect for a family gathering. Sashimi is fantastic and try the pork maki!! Service is always excellent.

I was researching highly rated restaurants and this comes up to the list. Bringing the worst Christmas Eve memory back in 2013, when our high expectations turns into disappointment.

The special mixed sashimi - right, the Big bowl of ice underneath making it special, filling the dish with salmon. Nothing wrong with its salmon majority, the nightlights is the two oyster ..... shells on the side, as display. This dish can attracts your eye balls in photo but in reality it’s a great joke.

The deep fried pork cutlets is way below average. If you are frequent traveler to Japan they would never use 100% lean pork cutlet as the texture is firm and dried. Cutlet they used comes with fat on its side.

I would recommend Izakaya which is capable of authentic Japanese cuisine in Neutral Bay. Wakana and sushi ya at Atarmon are both above average choices for a cheaper price tag.

In the days before smartphones, one needed to visit a restaurant to find out if they were any good at all. One would then have a proper conversation over the (hopefully) enjoyable meal and company. We neednt any devices to know about kyushu as it was 1 of our go-to more than a decade ago along with koh-ya (moved to randwick) n kintaro (now closed). It was pretty much like meeting a good friend whom you havent met in ages and found that you simply picked up where you left off and it gave you a warm fuzzy feeling inside.

They dont do anything spectacular except serving simple trad jap food w good qual ingredients and not taking shortcuts in prep. Comforting to see menu has not changed at all which serves to underline their focus on consistency. And consistent they were to a fault as our orders of crumbed oysters 4/5, salmon sashimi 3.75/5, agedashi tofu (4/5) and pork tonkatsu (3.75/5) were exactly how i remembered them down to the serving plates AND presentation.

If you havent been, give kyushu a go.

I have been regularly going to Kyushu for lunch and dinner for more than a decade now. Their lunch time special bentos are value for money and consists of a varied selection of mains and quality accompaniments. The sashimi is prepared fresh by a dedicated sushi chef in the kitchen.

Even though its on the salty side, I think the Chicken Teriyaki is the best in Sydney. If only they had a shop in the CBD so I can get my bento fix!

Basic menu executed well.
Little on the pricier side for Japanese food but is always fresh and not as salty and mayo drenched as other Japanese restaurants.
Recommend pork maki and teriyaki beef.
Restaurant is very loud though so do not recommend if you intend on a quiet conversation

Kyushu is definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants around Sydney, with reasonable price and portions. It's always a nice place for special occasions like birthdays/anniversaries. We ordered their SALMON LOVER (ENTREE), TEMPURA, FRIED OYSTERS, NEBAYAKI UDON, EEL HANDROLL, SALMON HANDROLL, TABOKKI NIGIRI and GREEN TEA ICECREAM. Everything was delicious and the sashimi/sushi were very fresh. Love their fried oysters in particular! Staffs were very friendly and helpful as well despite having a full house. Definitely recommend if you're looking for an authentic Jap restaurant!

Please feel free to follow my instagram: @pignic_ for more foodie snaps!

A lot of Asian/Japanese restaurants in the lower north shore are hugely overrated due to differing expectations and Kyushu is a prime example. Menu is quite whitewashed and unauthentic. Their specialty here seems to be the teriyaki dishes of which I have tried the chicken, salmon, squid and octopus. None of them are anything special. The food here isn't particularly bad, just really uninspiring and hugely undeserving of any rating >3.5.
Debbie_teriyaki_lover_69
Delicious food, we had the teriyaki chicken and it was absolutely phenomenal! Perfectly cooked chicken with crispy skin and a beautifully crisp side salad. Great sized portions! Had a very laid / casual back ambience however only problem was I asked for water numerous times and no one brought me water. 10/10 would recommend

Hidden in a corner at Neutral Bay, Kyushu is an extremely popular restaurant and it was very crowded during weekends. I tried the recommended pork maki and found it special and appetizing. The bacon/pork slice was wrapped around leeks and spring onions before being fried and covered with a layer of teriyaki sauce.

I also ordered the unagi rice. The unagi was nicely grilled and prepared. Unfortunately, the chef also made a basic mistake of not removing the eel's stomach and the unagi tasted bitter and foul.

Creative, tasty and thinking out of the box japanese food...thats what i saw in this resturant!

For entree we had the pork maki which is thinly sliced pork roll with shallot in the middle and fried with a dippy sauce and the grilled eggplant which was beautifully cooked.

For mains we had the waffu steak with dipping sauce which was cooked to perfection and the hot pot which was good but similar to korean hotpot so think i will try something else next time.

Overall great tasting food and look forward to next time.

For 2 entrees, 1 beer, warm saki to share and 2 mains was just over $100 so reasonable price i think.
Maria
Pretty average Japanese food, the entrees we had were gyoza....deep fried. Would have thought pan fried gyoza was the norm for Japanese styled gyozas? Either way pan fried gyoza would have tasted better than the deep fried one that was served, which was rather bland. Crab & prawn balls were very bland as well. Eggplant entree was good, enjoyed it. Mains were salmon terriyaki was ok... which tasted like terriyaki sauce out of a can/bottle. Pork yakiniku was from cheap & low quality shaved pork meat. Atmosphere was rather hot inside as well.

Went on a Thursday night and the place was packed. Good thing we had a booking! The service was prompt and pleasant and dishes came out quite quickly. We had:
- Agedashi tofu: The sauce was very moreish and the tofu had a light batter.
- Age Nasu: This was the eggplant. It wasn't cut properly so we had some difficulty separating the pieces. The sauce was delicious but the eggplant itself was quite greasy. The bonito flakes were very pronounced.
- Soft shell crab salad: Had a generous serving of crab, which was deep fried in a light batter. The salad could have benefited from more dressing.
- Vegetable tempura (5 pieces): Average tempura, not too greasy which is ideal.
- Kyushu roll: Massive pieces and a cute presentation (look a bit like a tree branch). The taste however was quite plain. More wasabi would've been appreciated (although I'm sure you can ask for it).
- Nabeyaki udon: The soup was delicious, very light and flavourful. Noodles were nice and chewy. Packed with toppings, including a singular prawn tempura.
- Unajyu don: The grilled eel rice box was very good with plenty of umami. Box looked much bigger than it was. Also came with miso soup.
- Green tea: This was the roasted rice variety and also came with refills.
- Green tea ice cream: Very creamy and sweet but personally would've preferred more green tea flavour. Came with a handful of cornflakes and some sliced fruit.

Overall, Kyushu is a family friendly restaurant with lots of solid food options. Some of their dishes were a bit plain and quite pricey for the size, but ideal if you're searching for a meal that doesn't leave you with an uncomfortably full feeling when you're done.

Service is very fast as this place is pretty much always packed. The sushi rolls (in main size) are substantial and filling.
Their udon is chewy, soft and generous with toppings. It's served in a metal bowl that's hot to touch and hard to move after its placed down.
I wouldn't recommend the tonkatsu (crumbed pork fillet) which was overcooked and tough.

Had dinner here tonight (Wednesday) night with. Work friend. Everything was delicious and fresh! Sashimi Platter was divine! Staff was very friendly and service was quick. Teriyaki chicken sushi roll was amazing! Definitely recommended!

Excellent food and good service, the sashimi is very fresh but sometimes looks like it is cut with a blunt knife.

The teriyaki main dishes are excellent and are good portion sizes for the price. We regularly come to Kyushu when we feel like a Japanese fix and it has been our go to place for the last 6 years.

The only down side to Kyushu is it can become very loud when it is busy which is usually every night.
Kimberley
My partner and I have been coming here for years. The service is impeccable and the food is amazing, always a full house Friday and Saturday nights so it's a good idea to book ahead although most of the time they can squeeze you in with ton half an hour. Give the shiitake mushrooms a try, there hasn't been a time that I've been to Kyushu and not ordered them, it's a shiitake mushroom stuffed with a pork dumpling like filling sitting in the most amazing sauce. My other go to is the teriyaki chicken, I cannot understand how they do this so well, the strips of chicken you are sitting in this orangey Asian sauce with a coleslaw type salad, the chicken is so perfectly done that the skin on the outside you can always get the satisfying crunch and the chicken practically falls apart in your mouth. Pair all this with an Asahi and your satisfaction levels will be through the roof. 10/10 MUST TRY!

Have been going to this place for a few years now. The staff are all really attentive and friendly. This place is the reason I eat Japanese cuisine now. Hated it prior to my First Kyushu visit. The shiitake mushrooms and beef tetaki are a highlight but to be honest the whole menu is amazing. Best Japanese food I've ever had bar none.
Great Japanese authentic restaurant. The seafood platter was fresh and tasty with a good variety of sashimi. The service was great and the staff are very accommodating and friendly.

Top quality Japanese. The best teriyaki beef you ever taste. The best beef you ever taste outside Japan. Udon is so tasty too. Price is ok. Not too expensive.

Kyushu is a local favourite. I know many people who drive from Western Sydney to come eat at Kyushu!
Luckily it's nice and close for me. The Age nasu eggplant is just delicious. Sashimi is fresh as always. We also had the teriyaki chicken and pork maki which was great.
The service is attentive and most importantly the food is consistent in quality and taste time and time again.
It's super bright so not really suited for a romantic dinner and advice is to book in advance as they usually are booked out even on weekdays.
Silvia
Came here again after many years left Sydney. The food was just okay, I especially liked the teriyaki chicken. The service was poor though, the staff were slow and kept forgetting to bring our requests. Recommend to book in advance if you have a large group.
Valley Local
Value for money, yes, but the food and ambience here are about as authentic as a pizza place in Tokyo. Noisy, brightly lit, slow service & disappointing food.

Had dinner in Kyushu with 2 other couples last week for another catching up :) I passed this restaurant quite a number of times already on my way to Kohya but never had the thought to try it out cause we always go for Japanese Buffet in Neutral Bay. I had a quick search online about the place and I read a couple of reviews that said the place is always packed with people and that we have to book. Luckily, Ms.B is always as prepared as I do. She made the booking and luckily it was not too crowded as it was on Monday night. All of us were starving and we ordered an entree, a salad and 4 mains to share. The first to come is the soft shell crab salad. The tempura crab still has its crunch and the salad was so refreshing drizzled with Kyushu's signature dressing. I noticed that most of the foods here are served with thinly shredded cabbage, red capsicum and orange slices ;p Soft shell crab salad $13.80 Then the Pork Maki Roll came! The caramelised sticky sauce at the bottom was finger-licki

I would highly recommended this dish. Crispy caramelised pork roll shells cooked in sweeten soy sauce. Fried then grilled and brush more sauce to create the golden glistening coating.

Kyushu - we love it!. My husband and I have been going for years to this Japanese restaurant, it is our mainstay for a bento box. Over the years we have gone with friends and family alike, and in turn has become their favourite Japanese luncheon restaurant. It is reasonably priced and BYO, so very affordable. Always lots of Japanese dining there, so I am sure this is a good omen. The staff are very welcoming and friendly, we just love Kyushu.

Fresh authentic japanese, value for money. A favourite amongst all of my friends, we frequent Kyushu and go nuts ordering almost everything on the menu. It is extremely good value for money and I would eat here every day if I could.

Best in area. This is an excellent place to eat. Ignore negative reviews (they are simply not true). Teriyaki Chicken is superb. Tataki is fine and delicate. Pork Maki succulent. Too many other favourites to mention.

If you want Japanese in the area, this is the best, hands down

BEST IN SYDNEY. I love this place... always have.
The only negative is they're closed Sunday & Monday :-(

Very Busy!!. Its not bad, but its not great.. Pork maki had a GREAT taste but it was really really chewy and hard to eat.

Sushi was dry - sashimi didn't taste fresh.

The staff are really friendly and japanese, and its definitely better then the other non-japanese run restaurants around..

But you can definitely get better japanese for a little more then the price you pay here...

Best Japanese food in Sydney - been a loyal customer for 20+ years! Go to dishes: terriyaki chicken, fish karage, pork maki

Always good. Love it love it love it
I have recently started picking up takeaway from the eastern suburbs - that's how good it is.
Floyd
Disappointed. I was hoping for the best when my wife and I ordered takeaway chicken teriyaki. It was barely edible. We were searching for a decent piece amongst the fat and skin. Not sure who would find that appetizing.
Bill
Great food, fast service. Very busy not a place to take your time but worth it.
Priscilla @FoodPornNation.com
Love this place!. Sashimi is ALWAYS delicious and fresh!
Bento Boxes (Lunch Box Special) are fantastic too. A definite must try.
Make sure you book though, it's hard to get a spot at times!
Fred
Do not go to relax and enjoy. The food is great but you will be rushed out before your last mouthful has finished being chewed.
Matt
Japanese BBQ and a decent selection of All Nippon Alcohols - what's not to like? Not as pricey as some of the CBD variants.
Andie Greene
My favourite Japanese restaurant in the area! Fast, friendly and delicious!
