Review Rubyos - Newtown

J Syd
I visited this restaurant for my birthday. I saw good reviews and had high expectations for them. The food was good compared to the low price. (9 course &75 pp) There were too many potatoes. Potato dishes came out three times before eating the main steak, so I couldn't feel any interest in steak. Above all, I waited 40 minutes for dessert to receive it. I don't really understand why it's taking too long! No one told us what the reason was and we waited unconditionally. I called in the middle and asked the staff twice, but they said "I would check" and no one came back to say the reason. she was "sorry for waiting" when the food came out after 40 MIN!!!!. (total we spent 3h for food) If I told you what happened in the middle, I wouldn't have felt the limit of waiting. It was cheap, but I don't know if I'll visit again. I hope what I felt will be improved.

We had the Mothers Day set menu and it was fabulous! The food was beautiful (presentation, portions, variety), service impeccable and the ambiance fantastic. Very reasonable price point for such a great meal as well. We even had my 12 yo son with us & had wondered if it would all suit him but he LOVED everything that was on his plate. Second time I have been for a Mothers Day meal and I always come out with the words "I must come back here again". Great place, do yourself a favour and visit!

Good range for omnivore, vegetarian, and vegan diners. Reasonably priced for the quality of food. We would have preferred a little more social distance between tables during pandemic times. We would have loved to have tried dessert and coffee but seating windows were tight.

Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and fantastic service. Our party of four paired of with the vegan banquet and the seafood sampler - we all couldn’t stop raving about how good the food was. It was our very first visit and it was such a lovely evening, will definitely be back again.

Second time we have eaten here. We had the Celebration banquet first time and it was devine! Seafood Sampler banquet last night. Absolutely delicious. Every dish brought out was so good. Reasonably priced. Service was excellent.

Away from the busyness of King Street is this amazing restaurant, their banquets are an absolute must do. They do a dedicated gluten free banquet which is amazing, the quality of the food and service is top notch. Great combinations.
Sandra Jensen
Fabulous quality food, great service and lovely atmosphere too. We had a lovely dinner for 9 ppl. Seasonal Banquet dishes came out at lovely paced intervals. Highly recommend.

Beautiful food and excellent service. Had the vegetarian banquet and dessert for two. It was all so totally delectable.

Nice upmarket restaurant although maybe not as good as its prices suggest. The smoked salmon duet mixed with some fresh flavours was good but a tiny serve. The steak and mash was a lot bigger and pretty good but maybe not the superb steak that you'd expect from the price. Really nice place though.

It was 10 years ago when I last fined at Rubyos and it was just as I remembered it. I adore the prints on the wall (and want them for my home), the service is warm and friendly and the food is made with love. Highlight dish tonight was the Chocolate Baklava (pictured). The dark chocolate sauce was divine. I am not waiting 10 years to go back again. #rubyos

I anticipated punchy deliciousness with a banquet of small plates - every plate was quite average
Dutchie007
Average to good food, smallish portion sizes, expensive. The mixed menu has good variety but portion sizes small. Generally, nice atmosphere, good food, nice place for dinner.

If you are going to serve set menus of numerous small courses, then every serve has to be quite to very good. You also need enough bread to finish the pâté, after all some animals died to sacrifice their livers and the least we can do is not waste it. We didn't get enough bread to finish it, a mere three thin slices of so-so bread. [It was nice pâté though ]

Overall, it was just OK, I would not go twice, especially at the price. Wine was also very expensive, or perhaps it was just Sydney.

We went with the vegan banquet which had 8 dishes. There were some pleasant dishes while some not so great ones. The guacamole crostini was tasty but it is also hard to go wrong with avocado. The sweet potato salad had a zesty dressing which was nice. I thought the cauliflower arancini was nice also but a little dry. Unfortunately nothing else was particularly memorable. The fried tofu had a strange combination of flavours.

Other than that, the service was lovely and the restaurant itself has great vibes. Can be romantic or a chill dinner with friends.

Asian/Australian CONFUSION

I ate here on Tuesday with my GF for the first time after seeing all the great reviews on Google/Zomato and what a disappointment it was!

This place is by far the worst restaurant I have ever ate in and I'm convinced the reviews must be fake, well some of them at least?!

When entering the restaurant the Decor looks great but that's where the GREAT stops........ The waiter looked like he would rather be anywhere else on the planet than serving us, and if I could guess I would say he is the owner.

We mentioned we were Vegetarians and he suggested the Vegetarian Banquet which is everything but a banquet. The ole saying you get what you pay for usually applies to most places except this establishment.

First we had the Guacamole Crostini which was avocado on the smallest bit of bread known to man or woman.

Second was the Sweet potato salad which had been drowned in Balsamic vinegar and suffocated with cinnamon to really kick you whilst you are down.

Third up was the Green Zucchini rolls which to me were completely lost.

Fourth was the Curried Arancini which tasted like a tiny, old rubber dog ball which had been deep fried.

Fifth was the Halloumi with Watermelon, the Halloumi was 1 inch by 1 inch and we were unlucky enough to have two of these miniature pieces of cheese which tasted like they had been marinated in a barrel of salt.

Sixth was the Sweet potato cakes which were also deep fried and tasted of nothing.

Seventh were Chat potatoes which if I could guess were cooked two days before me and my GF got there and deep fried again so that we could eat them not cold.

Last and not least was the Tofu which was the star of the night but still very average.

We were not given a new plate with any of the dishes so we got to taste the last dish with the new one every time which made things even more confusing.

After paying and leaving very quickly I felt like the owner should have been wearing a striped jumper and a robbers mask!!! I will certainly not be returning to this shambles of a place. Do yourself a favour and give this place a wide berth and save the robbery.

Rubyos is a chic and spacious restaurant at the eastern end of King Street which features high ceilings and long suspended lights. The eatery is decorated with small and large paintings and a small bar area with colourful hues pouffes.

The eatery features a long, complicated and wordy menu which takes a long while to comprehend. I ordered cumin fried tofu and curried cauliflower arancini.

First, the tofu was served with black bean and capsicum chilli con carne style sauce, vegan sour cream and tortilla chips. The chips were airy and stale whereas the combination of sour cream and chilli sauce was awkward and dissociated from the tofu. The tofu was dried and wrinkled and probably excessive fried.

Second, the arancini, served with spiced spinach leaves gravy, mustard and fenugreek seeds, chilli and yellow split peas, was also over fried. Here, the sauces was also incompatible and there was nothing exceptional.

My friend and I shared the $65 Celebration menu and it was amazing! The only bad dish was the chicken which was a little dry and bland, but everything else was flavoursome and so satisfying. We were so full by the end of the course. Totally worth it!

Our experience here on a Friday evening was very good. Service all throughout was brilliant, wait staff were friendly and prompt. We had the seafood banquet, the dishes all arrived in quick succession of one another. Each dish was prepared and cooked to perfection. Portions were small, however, we were rather full at the end of our banquet. So satiety was not an issue, neither was bloating.

Highly recommended, the main reason I selected this restaurant was for its large range of gluten free options. The only negative side was the slightly steep prices. We would still definitely return.

Decided to check out Rubyos before heading to a gig at Leadbelly as the restaurant is just steps away from our venue. Did some research and Rubyos delivered on my high expectations. I was looking for a nice restaurant with great vegetarian and seafood food. The only disappointing thing were the extended-happy hour cocktails. They lacked a wow-factor, but maybe that's because I use Eau De Vie as my standard.

The team at Rubyos are fantastic. Very friendly, engaging and attentive. Frankly, they made the eating experience even that much more enjoyable.

So, lets get to the food. Four sharing plates were ordered, two each from their cold and warm grazing options. I've listed them in order of my preference:

baked atlantic salmon
curried cauliflower arancini
charred eggplant involtini
smoked salmon & nori seaweed roulade

The baked atlantic salmon is one of their signature dishes and I can see why.

The food was fresh, flavourful and more substantial then expected. The wine options were good and we settled on a white. However, I was most impressed by the longneck bottle of Young Henrys. Had never seen a bottle like that... crazy and funny stuff.

I'll definitely return!

King Street became gradually quieter as we approached Rubyos at the east end of the dining precinct. A bright pink sign marked our arrival at our dining destination for the evening; I was excited to dine here after many years and check out the revamped menu under a different owner. The menu is divided into hot and cold grazing dishes to be shared between the table. It is Modern Australian cuisine with international influences from multiple culinary regions. The cold grazing features Peking Duck Pancakes ($27) with coriander and julienne vegetables. The pancake wraps are sourced from quality supplier to ensure they don’t crack during storage and consumption.

On the quieter end of Newtown, Rubyos is a nice place for catchups or date nights. The menu is designed to be shared and has influences from different parts of the world - surprisingly it works! My favourite from the night were the calamari which is so tender and the rosewater panacotta which is light and perfect in sweetness.

Lovely food. Can cater to any dietary requirement and friendly service.
A hidden gem in Newtown. Great for meeting up with friends and also lovely natural light.

*Special Thanks to Robbie (@itd_be_rude_not_to) and the lovely staff at Rubyos for organizing this event. Special mentions to Stella for the beautiful cakes @es.zcakedesigns . Rubyos is a beautifully lit restaurant located just before the busy streets of King Street. . Adding a touch of refinement and finesse, you almost forget you're in the pub grub and quick eats hub of Newtown.
Spooning Australia
Rubyos has been my favourite place the Ompty boys have taken me to. It is relaxed fine dining tapas style food in a superb venue. If you love a good venue in the Newtown area push this one up your list. And check out their menus, there is so much more food I have not listed and that is only the dinner menu.

Full review and pics are now up so get your hungry on.

Bon appétit.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
Just up the road from 1989, you’ll find yourself bang smack in the middle of the nineties with Rubyos’ Four-Course Grazing Brunch ($25/head). It’s a refreshing change from Newtown’s sourdough, single origin, cold-drip, dukkah and quinoa excesses. There are no beards, no tattoos, just an honest breakfast the way it used to be - well, except they’ve made a Sunday morning event of it, by delivering it to you across four well-sized courses with an alcoholic drink!Owner Badrul Haider, who took over this business twenty months ago, explains the classic choices were deliberate: “because we're only doing breakfast one day a week - Sundays between 9am-12pm.”We settle into the spacious, nicely decorated dining room with our respective breakfast cocktails - a Mimosa for her, and a Bellini for him - marvelling that they’re included in the price. We're also impressed that there isn't an Edison bulb in sight - no mean feat in Newtown. Feeling a little shabby, we each add on a well-made Vittoria Coffee ($4) in our preferred incarnations (for her, a latte, and him, a flat white). Our first dish – a mini breakfast bruschetta – lands bearing smashed avocado (I did say 90s), tomato and crisp bacon (or haloumi), under an avalanche of well-dressed (balsamic/mustard) rocket. It’s bright and healthy, and suits...

I went to Rubyos for an anniversary dinner. It's a charming little restaurant with a nice atmosphere. They have a few banquet options to pick from, as well as their grazing menu - which has vegan options clearly labelled AND many vegan options at that (horay! thank you Rubyos) we ordered a few dishes to share, and a bottle of wine to go with it. The standouts were the spicy cauliflower arancini and the chat potatoes. We also tried the vegan desert option - the trio of sorbets. They were delicious, the mandarin was the favourite. We were greeted by friendly waitresses and also the owner at one point. Great customer service and experience overall. I would recommend it to everybody.

Food, service, and decor was great. A very good experience, would definitely recommend to friends and looking forward to going again in the future.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Rubyos is a modern Australian restaurant worth the stroll away from the hustle and bustle, to the city end of King Street in Newtown. From the moment we walked in, the friendly greeting from the owner, Badrul and waitress Kate, complimented the warm, comfortable and stylish décor of the restaurant.

Can Newtown brunches get any better? I was treated to non-stop brunch action thanks to Ompty at this gem.

The weekend brunch special is priced at only $25. It includes a Bellini on arrival (my kind of Sunday pick-me-up), mini bruschetta, eggs Benedict, rhubarb hot cakes AND a fruit plate - seriously, if that isn't the greatest Sunday brunch steal, I don't know what it.

The bruschetta was my standout. I'm generally a rocket hater, but Rubyos coats their rocket in an incredible dressing of balsamic and mustard, and I was almost licking the rocket remains off the plate. The haloumi was panfried perfection, and I felt healthy because it was on multigrain toast - that's a win for me!

There wasn't a single part of this four course brunch I didn't love. The service was impeccable and the food was a completely standout. Can't wait to come back for a boozy brunch with my girlfriends.
Sweetandyummie
Gorgeous restaurant on King at that has a soft ambience and lovely vibe. The customer service is efficient and the food comes out in good timing. The provincial plates menu is well priced with very decent portions. I highly recommend the lamb rump and the smoked salmon pinwheel's. I can't wait to revisit.

Came here and met up with our foodie friends. Rubyos is
awesome. It is an inviting place, looks quite formal and has a fully stocked
bar and its’ quite large in size, perfect for a date or dinner with friends The
owner has taken over this place a year ago and worked hard to develop the food
and service at this venue. He was very welcoming and introduced the menus on
offer.

This would also cater for a wide range of people as there
are a wealth of vegetarian foods, vegan options as well as being able to cater
for those with lactose intolerances. So much food, everyone would like
something. They also have very reasonably priced set menus. Being in a group we
had the ‘Seasonal Sampler’. At $50 a head, this was great value. I liked the
sound of everything in the set menu which isn’t always the case at some places.

We began with Peking Duck Pancakes with a traditional
garnish and hoisin sauce, roll your own, and these are always a crowd pleaser.
Followed by a balsamic baked beetroot salad with frisee lettuce, baby spinach,
nashi pear, chia seed and apple cider caramel vinaigrette. Then came this
amazing serving of huge oysters deep fried with pickled ginger and topped with
wasabi mayo. We all normally prefer natural, but in this instance the batter
was light and crispy with juicy oyster inside and I enjoyed it a lot.

We then had curried cauliflower arancni which wasn’t your
traditional arancini, but rather sitting in a bowl of spiced spinach leaf gravy
, mustard, chili and yellow split peas. This had a nice hint of curry flavour.
Following this was panfried haloumi that was piled high with watermelon,
coriander and mint salsa, chili oil drizzled all over. We were sure not to get
many photos so that it was not cold and rubbery. The haloumi was melted well
and the saltiness of the cheese combined well with the watermelon.

The main dish was some lovely pieces of panfried atlantic
salmon that was cooked nicely in a thai green curry sauce, coconut mango rice
(which was one of my favourite things) and a tamarind dressing. This was
followed by a harissa basted chicken, served in strips with a smoky eggplant
salsa , whipped feta and yoghurt dip. Tender chicken with a delicious sauce.
One of the standouts.

I’m not personally a fan of kangaroo normally, so I skipped
this, but my husband and the others really liked it. It was perfectly cooked
(which is hard to do) and served in slices, nice and tender with a blue berry
and red onion chutney which accompanied the meat well.

Another great dish was the roasted crushed chats with fresh
herbs and seasoned salt. They were so crispy, I kept going back for more.

To finish we had the bitter sweet baklava and grand mariner
truffle ice cream. Baklava awesome add chocolate, even better. We also got to
try the chocolate and cherry crème brulee, different but very nice. Pulled the Matt Preston spoon out ;)
spoon cracked through the top layer perfectly. I'm keen for another visit and recommend you all go too!

We purchased a groupon for a 5 course meal + dessert for $70 at this restaurant and I think it's a good deal for the price.

Food was a bit of a hit and miss. Yes - they covered a fusion of many regions food from Mediterranean to Asian. However, we did not find anything spectacular or of great quality. First course was sourdough with balsamic (not sure if that should be counted as a course). Second was a walnut pear beetroot salad which was my boyfriends favorite dish despite the lack of creativity and complexity. Third was scallops on raddish with wasabi mayo which I thought was the most creative. Then we had two small pieces of haloumi with watermelon salsa. Finally two small pieces of chicken with potato mash in red wine sauce. All in all was good value for a groupon deal but I will not pay the normal price of $25+ for any of those dishes given they are so small in portion and nothing amazing.

Dessert and the glass of wine on the other hand were fantastic. We got the shared dessert for two. I saw on the menu it was $30+ which I thought was a bit steep but all the 4 pieces were delicious (wild berry sorbet, white chocolate cake, panna cotta and chocolate baklava)

Service was very welcoming and the ambience is cosy/romantic. Our waitress was lovely and kept our water glass filled the entire time. Only thing was the courses were brought on very quickly before we have finished the last course.

Located on the city end of Newtown. I had visited this restaurant a few times previously. On this occasion we were invited out and it was a good opportunity to see how it compared to our last visits here.

The service was lovely. Badrul was very welcoming and was a nice host. Kate was our waitress tonight and had a great attitude.

The menu we had was the 'Seasonal Sampler'. It was a culinary journey through different regions of the world including China, Thailand, India, Greece, North Africa, and Australia. The dishes looked so pretty on the plate and not only looked good, they were very tasty as well. The concept is shared grazing plates. It is such a good idea as you won't get food envy as you get to sample a bit of everything!

On offer was Peking Duck (like a modern take on the classic Peking duck wrap), Balsamic Baked Beetroot Salad (it had lots flavour and textures from the beetroot and walnuts), Sesame Seed Battered Oysters (it was nice and crunchy with a soft filling), Curried Cauliflower Arancini (the cauliflower was a great substitute for the traditional rice in it), Panfried Haloumi (went really well with the watermelon), Baked Atlantic Salmon (well cooked and falling apart), Harissa Basted Chicken Breast Strips (nice kick from the harissa), Crushed Chat Potatoes (very crispy and moreish), and Seared Kangaroo Fillet (easy to get wrong but this was well cooked and went so nicely with the mash).

To finish off the evening we had sweet treats including Bittersweet Chocolate Baklava (a wonderful twist on the regular baklava with a great chocolate flavour and crunch of the pecans served with a grand mariner truffle ice cream), Rose Water Scented Panna Cotta (you can really taste the rose water without it being overpowering and had a wonderful wobble to it, the coconut semifreddo that accompanied was full of flavour and creamy), and Chocolate And Cherry Creme Brulee (chunks of cherries studded the brulee and the white chocolate ice cream was lovely too). Rubyos in Newtown: the dessert platter arrived I gasped in shock and awe. WOW! This looked really good. Did someone say chocolate baklava??!!. Rubyos in Newtown turns it on. Their signature Salmon dish also caught

I was there with my fiancée on Friday night and had a very bad experience. To be fair, the lady who greeted us and took us to our table by the window was nice though it seemed like she was a recent hire. It was downhill from there. We probably have ourselves to blame for being "suckered" into their voucher deal.
It was a 5 course banquet and the highlight was their salad and bread only because the remaining dishes were mediocre considering the price and portion sizes. Case in point being the dessert which was very sloppily presented and tasted as bad as it looked. They didn't even offer to change our plates between courses and when I asked the waitress to change it prior to serving our main (2 thin strips of chicken with mash and gravy) she responded by saying, "you only have one dish left". I was flabbergasted! You know it's bad when even after the supposed deal you walk out feeling ripped off and hungry! Don't waste your money here, be warned!

The restaurant has a nice atmosphere but serves dishes of a very low standard at ridiculous prices. A small leafy salad, two pieces of haloumi, two scallops and two very small strips of chicken breast covered in mash - dinner for two for seventy dollars. The food was nothing special, lacked creativity and a couple of dishes even made us regret not eating at home! The dessert platter was made of poor quality ingredients that tasted like the cheapest options you would find on supermarket shelves. If the restaurant chooses to position itself on the more expensive side of the Sydney food scene, then it has no excuse but to take its food more seriously! Very disappointing!

Rubyos at the quieter end of King Street is a tapas bar. Like most Tapas bars in Sydney their food is expensive and served in small portions. The best options here are the banquets. We had the $50 seasonal banquet which was 8 small servings of very average food. The highlights were probably the kangaroo and the haloumi. The service is mostly ok. There was one point in the night when all the glasses at the table were empty and nobody had come around in quite a while to refill or offer more wine. And there were other tables around us in the same situation. It was explained to us that 2 staff called in sick at the last minute.
The redeeming quality of the night was the head waiter Brendan. He was friendly, fun attentive and knowledgable. He helped raise the night to be slightly above average. With so many good tapas restaurants in Sydney this isn't one of the better ones.
Gaeth Al
Good location, clean restaurant, great staff, average food. But when you see the prices on the menu you will be even more disappointed. The portions are good, the quality is no where near what you would expect from a restaurant, it's more like takeaways quality
Daniel Gimenez
My family went here for my Dads birthday and had a great time. The waiters were super friendly and explained the menu (which is a bit different from most places), the atmosphere was quiet enough that we would hear each other talking but relaxed enough that we felt comfortable. The food came out quickly and in an organised manner. They have what they call a grazing menu, where they serve their meals in portion sizes that can be shared evenly between the group.

We decided to just get the standard four portions per dish and ordered ala carte. Our family has some vegans as well as some people with allergies so we had to group our orders, nobody was left waiting as the others ate however. Each group got a dish at the same time and everybody loved their meals.

Stand out dishes were the guacamole crostini, charred eggplant involtini, baked atlantic salmon, black angus grain fed beef rump, and the crushed chat potatoes. That's basically everything I ate and I enjoyed every dish. The prices may seem a bit expensive for some but the the meals taste great and are well worth it.

I highly recommend the place.
Hanging Bear
This place was really confusing, great location, contemporary dining setting, decent drinks menu, but the food just didn't make sense. Decided to try the Provincial Plates menu, one of the few banquet menu's on offer, first two courses, pork belly terrine & salad of turmeric poached chicken were quite good, though then came the flash fried calamari, which made me feel like I was down at the local pub, a big plate of deep fried calamari, and even though the batter was good, it was too big and too much. Would have been better had they just served up 4 larger size pieces of calamari so it looked nicer, and was easier to eat. cause the plate was so big, the next course, the seared scallops, came out whilst i was still needing time to breath, and there was only 2 scallops on the plate among the cauliflower. Scallops were nice, but i was getting too full before the mains came out, whcih did so without much time to digest the previous dishes. I couldn't enjoy the pulled pork croquet as they were too heavy. I managed to finish the Wagyu, which was cooked nicely. Overall, I just felt confused. There was only 2 of us, but food enough for 3 or 4, and came out too quickly. Food was ok, but just didn't have time to enjoy it.

I took my fiancee here to celebrate our anniversary and it was wonderful. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. I also really liked that the music was quiet so whilst it provided a nice background, it wasn't intrusive. We had the 8 course celebratory meal, the name escapes me, for $65 approx pp. As I mentioned before, the food tasted great but it also had great diversity. I was hesitant to order it because I have a huge appetite but I was surprisingly full at the end. I'm not someone to write reviews but the experience was so nice I thought I should make the effort.

We gave this place a go with a dandy movie ticket deal which worked out as $40 for dinner and a movie. The menu we received was actually really good. Portions were fair and the flavours and variety were great. It wasn't very busy and the staff really looked after us. We have had tapas in several other restaurants but still this is the one we have enjoyed the most. We are keen to get back and explore the rest of the menu.

We came on a Friday night and from the moment we walked in, we felt very unwelcome. We received no hello, no smile nor any feeling of warmth by the man that came to the door. Instead, all we got was an unfriendly 'do you have a booking?' and the moment we said no, it was like he had to go out of his way to fit us in. He checked his book at the counter and then proceeded to set up a table for us, all the while making me feel like I had done something wrong. We looked around and saw that the restaurant was rather empty, so weren't sure whether all the tables were reserved or not.

We were seated at a non ideal table near the front, under a very bright light, even though everywhere else in the restaurant was dimly lit. I eyed out a better table by the window, but naturally assumed they were all reserved. A waitress explained to us about their menu and how many shared dishes were recommended. She was friendly, helpful and very different to the service we had received only moments prior. We ordered a couple of nibbles to start and then some mains to share. The food was not bad, not too small like I had originally thought, with some nice flavour combinations. The crispy pork belly was nicely cooked and combined with the apple cider gel was delicious. Another interesting dish was the lightly seared albacore, very different to what I had envisioned, but tasty nonetheless. Prices look reasonable, but does add up. The waitress was attentive, serving our wine throughout the night so props to her and her good service. By the end of the night, I noticed the restaurant was only ever at 3/4 capacity, and the table I had been eyeing out since the beginning was left empty. We left confused as to whether we would ever come back. Although the food was nice, the start of the night had left a sour taste in my mouth.
Pollo_pesce_me
Great price nice place for group dining. Group of friends went there for a birthday dinner, we ordered banquet Tapas.
Overall every dish was pretty delicious, I can't say it's a gourmet or sophisticated dishes but they were tasty.
Only thing everyone didn't like in particular was a shallot salad. It was way too oniony - frankly bit too much.
I've ordered cocktails, martini was pretty terrible but Magaritta was amazing.
All and all great place get to together with friends without the price tag but I wouldn't dine in a hurry.

We went once as a group of four and really loved it, so went back again a few weeks later!
Amazing service - the kind you would expect in a fine dining venue.
I thought we would be bored of the food because we had gone few weeks prior - however we weren't! Great concept with the food coming out 'tapas/shared' style. It gives you the opportunity to try a bit of everything. Really great dishes.

Great atmosphere, great food, great service!. Dined here with a couple of friends and really enjoyed it. Location was fairly convenient, being in the culinary hub of King Street in Newtown. We were greeted with a welcoming smile at the door and treated to some terrific service throughout. The restaurant itself was pretty chilled and had a fairly artistic decor with plenty of paintings and things around. The food experience was pretty unique, haven't tried this "grazing" menu before where all kinds of food are brought out for you a little at a time. Don't really have any real complaints, the food was actually of great quality and tasted very fresh. The complete atmosphere/food/service package made our meal and catch up very enjoyable. Would highly recommend!

This week, I was even luckier to celebrate the birthday of my friend Briony at a new restaurant. The location was Rubyos in Newtown and it was a very good choice. Briony picked a set menu and it allowed us to really sample everything they have to offer. Given that the menu is meant to be shared, it was great and a very cost effective at $50 pp.

We found the Rubyos 4 course Brunch on the Crave festival website and trooped down to Newtown for a scrumptious feast. $25 for a champagne cocktail upon arrival, Haloumi/ Bacon Bruschetta, Salmon/Ham/Spinach Eggs Benedict, Ricotta Hotcakes and a Fruit and Yogurt platter. It's beautiful and a great start to the weekend.

Their lamb plate is popular. Animals roasted lamb on a spit. Is it any surprise that the queues for animals food is long? This was here and its advertising. Nice to see

The food philosophy at Rubyos is that all food should be shared and this makes a meal more enjoyable, or so our waitress tells us.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our degustation brunch at Rubyos Restaurant and were very well looked after by the Rubyos team. And we weren't stuffed either - we all felt we had eaten a hearty breakfast without feeling overfed.

Rubyos is another one of those Newtown restaurants that I've been walking past for years, but have never been to. If you know Newtown at all you'll understand why this is the case. There are literally hundreds of restaurants in this suburb with new ones popping up on a regular basis. So many restaurants, so little tummy room. I've heard great things about this restaurant and have been wanting to go to Rubyos to try their Grazing Menu for quite some time. I love the idea of sharing food with a group and get

Exceptional Service. My boyfriend and I went here for an anniversary dinner. We decided to go with the celebration menu (either tasting meals with matching wines) . The service was great, they were extremely flexible. They discussed the wine options and when I went with one to give it a try on their recommendation they even offered to change it if I didn't like it (I didn't need to take up the offer) . They were lovely chatty and attentive. And the food was great not only in taste but also in value. Highly recommend going here

Never disappoints. I was in a group of six when we went to Rubyos to celebrate a friends 39th birthday on the weekend.
Let me start by saying how special we felt walking into Rubyos and being greeted like we were regulars, old friends even! We were introduced to our waitress (I am sorry, her name has slipped my mind, maybe Sophie?) who showed us to our table and looked after us happily and attentively all evening.

We chose the $50 Banquet to make life a bit easier for everyone. We had a pescetarian in our group and that didn't faze the staff at all. Our pescetarian friend didn't even have to choose alternatives, that was done for her, and very well I might add.

I cannot fault any of the food that appeared on our table. Each dish was different but complimented the one before it at the same time. The dishes came out one at a time which gave us plenty of time to eat and chat – we didn't feel hurried at all.

It is very difficult to think of highlights when all of the food was so good. I must, however, make a special call out for the Grand Marnier Crème Brulee and the Cherry Chocolate Overload. Although I only had the Crème Brulee I was lucky enough to taste a morsel of the Overload and both desserts were complete winners!

I thought it was a very reasonable price for the fantastic level of service that accompanied the exquisite food.
As a group we had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. It was great company made better with the relaxed and friendly feeling that Rubyos encourages and fosters.

Thanks Rubyos for a wonderful evening, not the first, and certainly not the last.

Delicious. We had been impressed by dinner at Rubyos but the Brunch Special was superb!
At $25 per head, the set menu presents a smorgasbord of different types of breakfast dishes in miniature with each person receiving their own serving and is appropriate for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike.
The meal began with drinks (cocktail or juice) and Breakfast Bruschetta- a slice of chewy but not tough sourdough topped with a delicately spicy salsa avocado roast tomato and your choice of halloumi or bacon. The halloumi was tasty and the avocado complimented it well.
The second course consisted of a poached egg on a slice of bread covered in a tangy hollandaise and either wilted spinach, smoked salmon or leg ham. The egg was beautifully runny on the inside and the spinach and hollandaise were both rich and full-flavoured.
Next came little ricotta pancakes covered in rhubarb compote and blueberries (although we had asked for them to be served on the side) and with ice cream and maple syrup on the side. This was my first time sampling ricotta pancakes and I was pleased to discover they didn't taste like cheese at all! The vanilla ice cream was very good quality and was well soaked up by the fluffy pikelets.
The meal finished with some fruit served with a small amount of yogurt and honey on the side which was a fresh way to complete a gorgeous meal. Surprisingly, the set menu, although comprehensive was satisfying but did not leave us feeling bloated.

The service was fine and reasonably unobtrusive, while the ambience was pleasant very much due to the abundance of natural light and the unusual spaciousness of this inner city restaurant.

This meal has made me desperate to return to sample many other dishes on the menu (many of which are appropriate for different dietary requirements) as I feel very much assured that I couldn't pick a wrong dish at this high-quality establishment.

Awesome food and excellent service. Went here for dinner last Tuesday night and had the Tuesday night dinner special which is terrific. $50 per head and you get a tasting plate, 2 serves of 7 different dishes plus a dessert tasting plate and 2 glasses of champagne.

The food is absolutely delicious and the service is of the highest standard.

Highly recommended!

What a fantastic restuarant. Went with a group of 15 for a birthday dinner. The wait staff were great, never an empty glass. The food was amazing. Highly recommend this place!!

Having just finished my dinner at this fine establishment I had to immediately write a review. It was awesome! My friends and I just happened to walk past on our way out for drinks in Newtown. We had the grazing menu. The food was delicious and we were all big eaters and we could hardly move after it!! The service was very good and not to intrusive which I like. One of the waitresses there was very helpful I can't remember her name but she wore glasses, she made my night by explaining the menu in a non condescending way that I have experience in other reataurants. Will be back 100%!!

A truly memorable experience. WOW may well be the most apt description of my dining experience at Rubyos. As a 'first-timer' to the grazing process, I was guided by the friendly and sophisticated explanations offered by the wait staff and I cannot express how impressed I really was. From the refreshing combination of haloumi and watermelon through to the well-balanced kangaroo dish, I felt as though my taste buds traversed the globe, sampling only the very best.
I was pleasantly surprised at how perceptive and attentive the floor staff were throughout the entire evening. Registering early on that we were dining in celebration of my birthday, not only was I presented with a sparkler upon the arrival of dessert but the whole restaurant joined in to sing Happy Birthday - it was so special!
Rubyos offered an unforgettable experience; I can't wait to return!

Good food, condescending service. Went to Rubyos for the first time a few weeks back, and while everything we ate was delicious, I couldn't help walk away from the experience feeling disappointed and offended. My partner and I are in our late twenties, and we're fortunate to earn enough that we can treat ourselves to good meals. It's true, looking around, we were the youngest diners in the room, but that shouldn't be an invitation for the staff to make condescending comments like how it must be a special occasion for us to be here. We then got talked through the menu as though we were infants who've never heard of a tasting menu before. By the time the patronising waitress was done we were seriously considering cutting our losses and going somewhere we wouldn't be made to feel so small, but then we realised doing so would probably be interpreted as us poor youngins' feeling overwhelmed by this fancy-pants restaurant and fleeing to the nearest Macdonald's!

Again, the food was lovely, but I won't be back - there are too many places in Sydney where you get good food and good service.

Must go again. I cannot rave enough about this place. So far have only had one banquet breakfast here, but it was quite possibly the best brunch I have ever had! The food was amazing not to mention very reasonable, but also the service is amongst the best l have had in Sydney. Will definitely revisit and feel confident that I can take others here and leave without feeling embarrassed.

Loved it. Excellent food and great service. This is the 2nd time I have been to this restaurant with my wife and we both loved it. The servings were genrous and excellent way to try various food types. Thumbs up. I'll be back.

Loved it! Food was amazing, we had the 8 course tasting menu. The service was great, the food came out quickly and the staff were very friendly. Will definitely be going back!

We went as a very large conference group and despite the problems with accommodating a group that size, the food was served Una coordinated and well-timed manner, the staff were friendly, helpful ad attentive and the food was outstanding.
I would definitely go again and highly recommend this culinary gem!

Too hit and miss for me. Some delicious dishes, great sharing concept and well/timed delivery of each course. But some terrible dishes (haloumi so salty I almost gagged), terrible bathrooms and waitstaff lovely but missing the finer details (like how to pour wine or even water without spilling it) that really let the place down. A real shame because this place has huge potential.

Ruby, ruby, ruby, rubyos. A friend and I headed this way for a girl's night out. (After a quick mojito at Jester Seeds.) We opted for the Celebration Menu-a special for the evening: 8 sharing courses at $65 a head including a glass of Cur Royale. Highlights included: Peking Duck pancakes, Pumpkin and Spinach Salad, Hallomi, SoftShell Crab and the Pistacio Pannacotta and the service. Low light: the lamb-too sweet and way too chewy. The Chocolate Torte needs more sauce or a splash of cream and the Guava Ice cream was not to our taste.
Overall though, excellent value for money and I will go back again.

Great service and great food we ordered the banquet and being a Vego that eats seafood they were incredibly accommodating and allowed me to swap the meat dishes with almost any other dish on the menu. Very accommodating. Highly recommend

Little Gem!. Fantastic "Celebration Menu" was a great introduction to the best dishes on the menu, matched to great wine selections all for less than $100 each represents great value. The portions appear small but add up to a satisfying meal, even for two large guys who had skipped lunch! The service was spot on, being just the right blend of friendy, informative, professional and attentive - great to see and added to the enjoyment of our meal! Rubyos could easily become a favourite!

Haphazard service.... We were expecting more from Rubyos, with its white linen tables and upmarket ambiance. While the food was pretty good, the service was below par.

The breakfast grazing set is a pretty good deal - bruschetta (halloumi or bacon), eggs benedict (salmon, ham or spinach), pancakes with ice-cream and fruit platter along with a glass of mimosa or bellini. Can't fault any of the dishes except the eggs Benedict which was smothered in an overly buttery yet terribly bland Hollandaise sauce. The house-made beans was a tasty side order. Otherwise, the breakfast menu is limited and bog-standard.

Sadly, the surly service let the place down. We were also initially informed that it was fine to order one breakfast set and 2 dishes from the standard menu but later told that at least 2 sets had to be ordered.

The timing between dishes were inconsistent. Even though only a handful of tables were taken, the wait time between the end of each course ranged from 10 - 15 minutes, even when the staff clearly noticed that our plates were empty.

Wouldn't go back. Went for lunch with family and got the banquet menu. It felts like the food was trying to be something it wasn't and overcomplicated itself so that the flavours didn't work. For the price, definitely not worth it. The head waitress was quite cold and abrupt when we arrived. Overall very underwhelmed and definitely wouldn't go back again.

How good is this gem - professional, attentative service, great/interesting menu and excellent wines. A bit of polish on KIng St.

Disappointing. My partner and I sat for Rubyos' "Date Night" degustation. To preface this review with a caveat: we were not expecting all the perks of fine dining, as this is a reasonably priced menu. However, for that reasonable price ($50 a head, not including drinks) the evening was an absolute disappointment. Allow me to explain why this was the case.

The seven courses came out haphazardly, with some being delivered together, and others with significant (even excessive) pauses between them. The courses themselves ranged, in taste, from lackluster to offensive-the salad (lettuce and pancetta) had no flavor but for bitterness; the kangaroo (coated in something black and mustardy) was overcooked and fatty; the crab was miserably dry and coated with unpleasant-tasting curry powder; and the desert was, sadly, inedible: indeed, no one should be expected to pay for dry supermarket brownie, sided by bleach flavored blackberry ice-cream and bleach-flavored pana cotta (with extra ammonia, because you're worth it). The course sizes aren't ideal, but that would be forgivable if they were more edible or even, dare I say it, appetizing. Our meal was neither edible nor appetizing.

The location is stunning and convenient-to be sure the restaurant's large, glass windows allow for customers to take in some pleasant scenery-and the wait-staff are friendly, though not quite up to setting down plates without spilling their contents onto the table. I will not return to Rubyos and I would not recommend it to friends-alas, after this evening's experience, I would actively persuade potential customers to try their time elsewhere.

Hit and Miss. I really want to like Rubyos but, gee, sometimes they make it a little hard with their inconsistency. The food, when it's good, is really, really good and when it's not, it's pretty ordinary.

I love the sound of all of their food but the execution in some of the dishes leaves a little to be desired. I think their vegetarian food is a cut above the dishes for the omnivores. The haloumi, mmmmm, yum.

One of the nicest rooms in Newtown, though, so it's very pleasant to while away a few hours over a good bottle or two with your mates.

They do allow BYO, which is a bonus for us, and it means you won't break the bank!

One of best restaurants in Newtown area! Great service and great food, always a good choice

Love Love Love. Just had to write a review on one of my favourite restaurants in Newtown. We've been going here since it opened and have never had a bad experience. The service is outstanding, the food is just amazing and of course the prices are well worth it. The ambiance is gorgeous and very relaxed and the owner is so friendly and accommodating. We love it so much we had our wedding here. Fantastic fantastic fantastic! Keep up the great work guys!!
