Review Rosso Antico Pizza Bar - Newtown

Mitchell “Mytha”
Recently had Italian food cravings. So we popped in for a pizza and the calamari. Both great dishes. Also there bread was divine that we ordered seconds. If your into big bread like crusts. You’ll be happy with what comes out!

This place has the best Italian pizza I've ever tried. Highly Recommend for fluffy and delicious pizza that will make you keep coming back for more.

Pizza was ok. The dough was a bit soggy. Had higher expectations based on recommendations and the reviews. Have had tastier pizza elsewhere in Newtown. Friendly staff.

Friday night no booking. This place was pumping! Great vibe - the floor manager maybe owner (Oswaldo - if I got it right) got us seated at the bar. Service quick. Pizza - unbelievable. Light dough - flavoursome toppings - pretty cheap pricing compared to many others at the moment in the market. They seemed under staffed & under the pump - yet the staff & specially Oswaldo were real polite & smiling when service. Definately would be back & strongly recommend - giving them a go once or many more times 🤙🏻 Good job people

Fantastic authentic Italian style pizza - nice staff, no pushy overselling. The place was buzzing and full at 6 pm on a weekday - so clearly a local favorite. The pizza’s were really flavorful and the cold meat platter we ordered had a nice selection. We were driving so didn’t get a wine, but seemed like a good selection.

Very, very good pizza. The tartufo was generously seasoned with truffle, sausage and mushroom, and the crust was divine. You certainly do pay for the pleasure, but the prices are similar to other woodfired pizza joints, where the pizza itself is superior so all-in-all I'd say the value for money is reasonable.

If these people respected their customers they would take reservations or at least keep a list at the door. Being invited to queue 40 minutes in the cold and wet to eat pizza is an extremely off putting experience. With every other quality restaurant worth its name, one can go there and know when they'll get a seat.

The best food and customer service in town. Rosso Antico has become a Friday staple because the pizzas are out of this world and Charlie, Rick and Aaron are incredibly welcoming. I can't speak highly enough of Rosso Antico. Definitely put it on your list.

Authentic wood fire pizza with a rustic and minimalist decor. Service was genuine and added a special touch to the meal. Would recommend the Sangiovese wine. Arancini balls and calamari were both nice antipasti,

These guys really don’t cope with being busy. They don’t have systems that deal with managing their restaurant and their takeaway orders. Do not order or come near in peak times. Ie, when you want to eat.

Quality woodfired pizzas and fairly priced. The dough was so lovely, soft and chewy - not sure if that's the best way to describe it. Went as a group of 6. Each pizza has 6 slices so it is the perfect group size because you get to try a bunch of pizzas. We originally ordered 4 but ordered another when we saw the special menu item.

🍕Tartufo ($25) fior di latte, italian sausage, porcini & truffle paste
🍕Quattro Formaggi ($21) scarmoza, fior di latte, gorgonzola, & parmigiano
🍕Diavola ($23) san marzano, fior di latte, salami, olives, roasted capsicum & chilli
🍕Napoli ($18) san marzano, fior di latte, anchovy, olives & oregano
🍕Special ($26) basil pesto, foot do latte sausage, potato, parmassn cheese cream

Anchovies were quite salty for my taste. Cheese was super cheesy, even as a cheese lover I don't know if I could've handled more that one slice. I loved the truffle, it was so flavourful. The special flavour was interesting, I've never had potato on a pizza and the pesto was pretty fresh.

We went to Rosso Antico for a anniversary dinner. We didn't have the option to make a reservation as they don't take bookings but we arrived at 630 and there were plenty of spots available. By 7pm though the place was full with people waiting on the seat outiside. Deliveroo and Menulog came in and out constantly. The warehouse-esque style is perfect for the area and the cuisine was well priced for what it was. We had two serves of bruscetta and two pizzas plus a byo wine for $62.50. The byo fee was $5 per bottle. The service started quite well but as time went by the service went down hill. The pizzas we ordered were pancetta di palate and tartufo. Both were quite large, had lots of cheese and the other toppings were reasonable. The italian sausage on the tartufo was lovely, cheese taste authentic and the crust was to die for. We didnt have desert as we were so full but we were very content with the meal. It was value for money and easy to find a park so we will def be back.

The Tartufo ($25) on the other hand was probably one of the most noteworthy pizzas I’ve had to date. The excellent crust made another reappearance, but the lackluster tomato was swapped for a richly pungent smear of truffle paste, and topped chunks of coarse Italian sausage, and juicy porcini mushrooms that burst with earthy umami. I’d go back for this alone.

The pizza was traditional but was so so soggy. It absolutely required rolling up the slices but still spilled the poorly positioned olives and zucchini. I don't know how it happened, the base seemed very doughy and undercooked but ingredients seemed overcooked, or maybe they were just drowned in oil - the zucchini looked more like pickles. The pizza price would have been normal if the pizza were good but I can totally understand the complaints about pasta portions - we got $23 worth of fried entrees and you could hold all of it in one hand.

It is the third time in the last 5 months that we come to this restaurant and honestly, they've never failed.
This time we came on a Saturday night and it was very busy.
We had to wait almost half an hour to be seated, but trust me guys, it worths it.
In this occasion we ordered arancini balls for entrée and then we decided to get into the pizza special and we ordered both pizza special available that night which were the burratina and the sfiziosa.
It seemed not true! , but we were completely astonished how tasty they were.
Athough it was a quite busy night, the staff was very attentive, professional and efficient, especially one of the guys whose name was Oswaldo that read our mind by bringing us some fresh chilli oil without even ask to him.

THANKS GUYS FOR GIVING ME ANOTHER GREAT FOOD EXPERIENCE

Beautiful food and people! All of the food was delicious and the fresh flavours were refreshing. The fun atmosphere made for a great night out!
Chilli Feli
Authentic Neapolitan woodfired pizza with chewy charred puffy crusts on the outside and super thin saucy goodness in the middle. Our tarfuto (sausage, porcini mushroom and truffle paste) was rich but not over powering, and our Margherita was on point. We came on a busy Saturday night and had to get in queue for half an hour to get a table, the service was understandably rushed but the food really delivered. Also love the fact they do BYO at $4.50 per bottle. We will be back!

I don’t recommend it to anyone! We ordered 2 pastas and 1 pizza. Like literally the pastas were small portions as if you ordered appetizers or you are a child meal. While for the pizza, we waited for ages and at the end it wasn’t good at all.

Dinner tonight was at Rosso Antico Pizza Bar and I have to say, what a pleasant treat! Finding ourselves in the Newtown/Enmore area we were looking for something to eat and settled here. The service was attentive and lively, the place had a lovely atmosphere and the food was top notch. Fresh tasting ingredients and beautiful dough on the pizzas we had. We'll be back soon :)

This place has amazing pizzas that have so much flavour! I have had the margarita pizza a few times now and it is the best! The patate e Pancetta is very tasty! The crochetes are amazing too for a starter!
Their pasta is fresh and full of flavour! Lovely, quick and friendly service

Was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant, the service was attentive and friendly & the pizzas were great! Ordered a two pizzas that came out quickly, the dough was nice and thin and cooked well. Only downside was that the margherita pizza felt a fit soggy in the middle.

Called in for dinner and was surprised by the lack of pasta dishes, this is an Italian restaurant after all and only had 3 pasta and 2 gnocchi dishes available. We both opted for the spaghetti and baby meatballs and a Friarielli pizza.Within 2 mins our pasta arrived and we were immediately shocked by the toddler sized portions. There was a tiny portion of spaghetti drowned in an ocean of red sauce. There was absolutely no taste to the red sauce, not a hint of garlic or any seasoning. At $19 for what was literally 4 forks full of pasta and a small handful of what seemed to be cheap frozen meatballs drenched in cheap sauce,it was a bloody disgrace,oh sorry, there was a baby basil leaf put on top which had more flavour than the drab and bland excuse for an italian pasta dish.We had also asked for our pasta to include hot chilli, which was notably absent. The pizza was ok,ive read past reviews and noticed many reviews complaining of a soggy base with very little flavour. Our saving grace was that our base was not soggy. The staff were very friendly until they asked us how our meal was. When we told the truth they went on the defensive and told us each bowl of pasta was weighed to 180grms.The whole bowl might have weight that but that also included the slurry of no frill tinned tomato sauce and crouton flavoured meatballs.Do yourself a huge favour and try for yourself as some past reviews give good ratings. But being honest,i could not possibly recommend this place to anyone. Its right underneath the old Newtown RSL club and a short walk to far more tasty restaurants. We paid $62 for our meal and then went and had a burger at our local pub to stave off our hunger pains. The masterfoods tomato sauce on our burgers was far superior to the no taste sauce on our pasta at Rosso Antico.Wont be going back and i wouldnt eat anything prepared by these cooks, not even if i was stranded on Gilligans Island and this was the only place available.

Me and a mate went in there for dinner. We both ordered the only spaghetti pasta dish each and a pizza to share.Within two minutes of ordering our pasta dish had arrived.I initially thought the waiter had dropped some on the way out,it was less than entree sized. The sauce was straight out of a can,(disgusting)!! It took us all of two minutes to eat it,truely. Then the pizza arrived,it was nice but I could have cooked it at home,(lucky we ordered it to fill up on pita bread). After we (ate) I went up to pay and was asked how our meal was,I said to the guy pizza was nice but the pasta was yuk and the sauce tasted like it had come out of a can and it was less than entree size, then he called some other guy over who looked uninterested and he said it was 180 grams of pasta,(WHO weighs pasta),I couldn’t be bothered debating it,payed 62 dollars. Then we went to our local pub to fill up.I strongly recommend you go to proper Italian restaurant and not this one!!!!!

Sooo good! I’m Italian and this pizza gets my top mark, the dough was perfect, the toppings authentic. Service was friendly and super quick. Will have to try the pasta next time.

No reservations and was very busy, staff were very accommodating. Temporary bar sitting made the wait easy. The half pizza/ half calzone was a novel concept and the flavours were rich. The gnocchi was rich, creamy and perfectly salty, long string cheese sauce with the occasional soften harder cheese in a mouthful.

Based on Zomato reviews I decided to try take away from Rosso Antico. The Diavola pizza was ready very quickly and was very tasty although the toppings were somewhat gathered in certain spots. It wasn't cut into slices either which suggests they were rushed but it doesn't change the fact that it was delicious. Will give them another go and dine in next time!

Hands down the best pizzas available in Sydney. Pizzas done right and how they are meant to be.

I’ve previously travelled to Italy and fell in love with how beautiful the pizzas were there and naturally being that Italy is the country where pizzas hail from. Since then I’ve been bitterly disappointed with the local pizzas produced by places that claim to know about what it takes to make good pizza; until Rosso Antico came into my life. (Crust, dominos and local kebab shops I’m talking about you)

It just angered me deeply to go through the reviews and find the appalling things said by those uncultured individuals who don’t know any better. Saying their pizzas are ‘soggy’ in the middle is the equivalent of ordering sashimi in a Japanese restaurant and complaining about it isn’t cooked... poor form. Tsk tsk tsk

Rosso Antico, keep up the good work and keep doing what you’re doing when it comes to bringing true Italian pizzas to us here in sydney from your humble shop in Enmore!

UPDATE: Do not be swayed by the 2 negative reviews. I have no idea what goes on in those peoples’ minds, they must have so much self hate to try to smear the reputation of this place. Been back to this place many times since my last review and I can still confidently recommend their pizzas to anyone.

Do yourself a favour and pay a visit to this restaurant. Best woodfire pizza in Sydney HANDS DOWN. I can't get enough of their pizzas. Every single one of their pizzas on their menu is delicious and the standard is always consistent. Very nice ambience great for group dinners or a date night though it tends to get quite noisy sometimes. Oh and the service is amazing too!

Awesome spot for woodfired pizza. The crust was nice and puffy and a little bit chewy. The base was thing and had a good crunch but definitely not overdone and the toppings were generous but perfect balance. Nothing was overpowering.

Pricing was very reasonable (about $20 per Pizza) and it was super quick.

BYO too 😉
Must Be Hungry
Mamma mia! Rosso Antico has truly been a revelation. We walked in without booking and luckily we got their last available table 😆😆😆

Warm welcome from their floor staff and the first round of Peroni was ordered 🍻🍻🍻

Hungry as we were we decided to go for their Prosciutto e Burrata, Diavola Pizza and the Friarielli one 🍕🍕🍕

The antipasto came and it was super-duper delicious, delicate and made with high end produce 👌👌👌

The Pizza was Napoli style, soft dough, cooked in a wood fire oven and topped with quality ingredients. We found in both great flavours and we were happy to discover the authenticity of this venue, in fact not only most of the ingredients are imported from Italy but also their staff come from the boot of Europe 😍😍😍

If you are in the area don't be shy and come in here for a badass pizza ☺☺☺

Thank you for having us 🙏

Easily the best pizza in Sydney.
Service was incredible and waiters were attentive, amazing authentic Italian food. Cannot recommend enough! Definitely suggest going on a quiet night if you can, otherwise you may have to wait 10-15 minutes on a Friday or Saturday.
Best food in Newtown!

True woodfire pizzas!! Not a lot of toppings but that's how I like it! Menu is small so everything is exceptionally fresh and you can tell it's all handmade. We take a lot of people here and they always love it. Can't book, but service is fast so the turnover is quite quick.

Service was fantastic. Super quick. Had the olives. Mozarella/prosciutto. Gnocchi. And 3 pizzas to share between the table. Everything was nice but quite lacking in flavor. Bases of pizza were quite doughy and soggy. They served one of the cocktails in a mini mason jar and that was really not cool. Not an awful experience though.

Have you been on the hunt for genuine Italian pizza and not looking to fund an entire corporate conglomerate? Look no further, Rosso Antico is where it's at.

I'm an Italian food lover and do enjoy a tasty Margherita or Quattro Formaggi. Both of which are on the menu. On this particular night I ordered the Margherita and I'm so glad I did. Fresh woodfire pizza with soft and chewy crust, paired with a generous serving of cheese and tomato sauce- every bite saw the tomato sauce base ooze out, breaking through the salty and creamy cheese.

Phwoaarr Rosso Antico does NOT mess around! And even if that wasn't enough, these guys also serve dessert calzones. Taking it to the trend these days, they offer a Nutella calzone which we order with zero hesitation.

We're rewarded with a doughy, oozing, gooey pastry that our arteries are probably going to hate us for later. Highly recommend you end the night with this- you can easily share it between 2-3 people; especially if you've already gorged on some pizza.

They don't take reservations so I recommend you head in early. We got there at 6pm on the dot and we were able to nab 2 tables for 5 people.

I can't wait to go back.

Went went here for the second time last night. They were kind enough to squeeze us into the last free table - things were very crowded by 7.30pm! The pizzas are great - we had the Tartufo (yummo!) and the Quattro Formaggi. Tasty and authentic. Wish I lived close enough for home delivery...

Our first here, greeted with friendly service. The deep fried olives were amazing, followed by the rocket pear salad and our pizza which was delicious. It was a busy night but ridiculous wait for food. Definitely recommend this plead.

ROSSO ANTICO & HAKIKI ICE CREAM via DELIVEROO.After a crazy work week & a few late nights, the girls & I decided that it was long overdue for a Friday night in & some take out food. Yay Girls night in!. I jumped onto the Deliveroo App which lists the local eateries & opted for wood fire pizzas & Turkish icecream for dessert. I choose the restaurant Rosso Antico, Newtown because I've tried their pizzas several times before & am yet to be disappointed by anything on their menu or service.

Super fresh and delicious wood fired pizza. And so fast. We stopped calling in for takeaway because its pretty much ready by the time you finish paying after walking in no matter how busy they are.

I'm so full as we speak and as I'm writhing this review after a great night out in Rosso Antico. I got there after 6:30 on a Friday and luckily didn't have to queue (they don't take booking). Menu is mainly pizza using San marzano sauce (traditional Neapolitan pizza). My friend ordered italian sausage and I had 1/2 margherite and 1/2 ricotta and salami calzone. Oh my gosh the whole thing was oozing with cheese as you can see from the picture and everything you could expect from an authentic pizza. Service was very attentive and friendly. The interior was industrial, funky and very nice. We had BYO wine for $4.5. It was a great night.

A fab pizza & pasta place on Enmore road. The pizza's are delicious and the prices are very reasonable. We were dining with a large group and the cost per head was great value for money. A great place to catch up with friends in a central location.

Nothing beats an authentic wood fired pizza and this restaurant delivers the goods! I tend to judge an Italian restaurant by its Margherita and can honestly say this is one of the best I've ever had. Perfect pizza dough spread with San Marzano and topped with beautiful milky fior di latte and fresh sweet basil. Absolute perfection!

Walking in on a Friday night at 6pm, one of the first customers, we were (not) welcomed by a young man who said a gruff hello, and then he pointed (not gestured) at a table by the window that we should sit at. There was no walking us over towards the table, no, would this table be fine- no more polite type gesture towards the table, it was a point, like a school teacher telling children where to sit down (and be quick) Did not get a smile or a warm word from anyone actually and even in the first 5 minutes of getting the menu and water did not have a good feeling. (should have followed my instinct) . We first had a (Caprese) buffalo mozzarella salad. The mozzarella was very good, but small serving of the salad greens and very few tomatoes. Not good value at $16. The prawn pizza when it came was a shock. Looked like someone had spread crushed tomatoes from a tin on the base, and then there were 6 small prawns and a small bit of rocket in the centre. That was it for $22. I know other ingredients were not listed (but I had kind of expected cheese, my fault for assuming) and definitely expected more prawns. This $22 pizza was not going to be tasty or filling. My daughter was so hungry and looking at that in front of her, we decided we better pack it up, and go and have something else to eat somewhere else. And that we did. Walked out $38 later. It would be one of my worst value and least warm experiences anywhere for a long time.

Superb wood fired pizzas. Accidentally received an extra pizza, however it was so good we were happy to pay the extra, the staff went above and beyond and gave it to us complimentary! If you're going to visit, the four cheese pizza is a must! Probably the best Wood fire pizza around.
Will Power
Bottom line pizzas were soggy, no point selling sponge pizza! The staff were great, the decor great, menu choices bit limited. The gnocchi was too chewy, sorry not 5star but still good! Can't say will go back! Call me fussy!

Think only way we are going to get good pizza in Sydney is to cook it at home!!!!
Chocolate_frogs456
Service is friendly if not a little hurried. The pizzas are tasty - chewy puffy crust and leopard spots on the base a lot like they are in Napoli. The tartufo pizza was tasty but could have done with a little more truffle flavour and the prosciutto pizza also good but needed a little more parmesan. Better than Da Mario and Lucio's prosciutto not as good as Via Napoli I'd say. Croquettes were disappointing. It's a little noisy so not really for a romantic date night. Overall a nice night out and pretty delicious but a few small improvements could be made.

Finding a place to take 10 young women for a mid week birthday dinner in style is a very challenging task....not to mention please all tastes. This is why I normally shy away from taking on this responsibility however I was a hit with the girls after our dinner at Rosso Antico. I was met with no resistance on the end of the phone to the booking of 10 women, the service was a true Italian delight and the food all given the serious nod and eyes of approval from every Italian super critic at the table. What I now call the most rocking bar in the inner west truly did a fantastic job and I want to thank them for making my dinner a hit!!

Since Gigi's went Vegan, I was worried i'd have to travel to Balmain for good Italian Pizza... nope, hello Rosso Antico to the neighborhood. Amazing Italian style pizza, beautifully cooked.

Looking forward to more visits.

Wow This Is What I Call Real Pizza, Perfect Pizza Perfect Staff What More Can I Say, Great Night Had. And Thanks Guys For The Limoncello Will Visit Again Soon.

This is a new place and it was really good! They actualy have decent vegetarian options. We had the Norma and it was delicious. But even better was the phenomenal service!
Heneedsfood
Great Neapolitan style pizza at this bustling little place. Nice stripped-back decor, quick and friendly staff and decent uncomplicated menu. Tried the Patate e pancetta and Tartufo pizzas - both very good but the latter was a tad soggy in the middle.
Iloveaioli
We decided to try this new place bc we were getting sick of the average pizzas you can get around enmore. Service was quick, we got our pizzas in no time. The only thing that is annoying is that server offered a drink menu but they're still waiting for approval to sell alcohol, they should tell you from the start that only soft drink and juices are available! We're definitely going back!!!
