Review Flying Tong - Newtown

Unfortunately this place is let down by the food portions. Unbelievably small & they recommend to share the dishes? This place also only offers kimchi & you have to pay for it, whereas banchan (side dishes) are normally offered free at other places. Food is ok but no value for money. Only wish there were more Korean places around the area. I’ve tried this place a few times now & portions just seem to be getting smaller & smaller. The service was attentive but food was slow to arrive considering we were the only ones there.

spicy chicken is very juicy and crispy! Bibimbap is nice too. Portion for the meal could be more if it's for sharing.

Perfect portion for two, reasonable pricing, with a variety of selections!!! Best way to cure homesick days, you can expext great service too!

Unfortunately the portion size is small and while the chicken is soft and juicy, the coating is not at the usual tasty Korean fried chicken standard (and had a slight burnt taste) which kinda makes or breaks a good fried chicken. The kor-slaw and pickles were nice though.

Very disappointing. Have ordered here a few times and has been very inconsistent. Mostly a miss, but it is one of the very few local Korean restaurants so is ok for a fix sometimes. This will be my last though, they messed up my order once again and the serving was incredibly small for the price paid. The staff were also not wearing a mask which is also against the current public health orders.

Never felt more unwanted as a customer before. Staff seemed very reluctant to serve us, even though the whole time we were literally the only table there. Food was okay, but definitely overpriced as shown by other reviews. Plenty of other Korean places with better food, service, and prices.

Best Korean Fried Chicken. The quality of the food is worth every penny and the service is top notch. Wouldn’t go anywhere else after finding this place.

Tried bbq ssam, the rice ball I was expecting small balls of rice that stick together, no I got a lump of rice lathered with sesame oil. Puny portions, and for lettuce wraps they gave like 4 small leafs? I don't know for 26 bucks u can eat a feast elsewhere. Fried chicken is good but don't come when ur hungry

Sweet chili chicken was really good and so were the loaded fries with bulgogi beef. Bibimbap though was pretty average unfortunately. Would definitely go back for the chicken and beer next time.

Honestly really disappointing. Tiny portion sizes, and the food itself was only OK. Got the bossam, bulgogi fries and two types of fried chicken. Should have read the reviews first. Cannot recommend.

Quaint little Korean joint with delicious fried chicken. Both their original and sweet chilli with peanut and parsley varieties were lip smackingly delicious and at very reasonable prices!

If you look at the angle that it is priced like butter in Surry Hills, you may not complain about the price and portion. I will eat here anytime. The chicken batter is light and fluffy and obviously very crispy. It's different to other regular Korean fried chicken places.

Ever been so starving you’ve ordered food while on the train so as soon as you come home you know food isn’t far away? Ever felt like Korean chicken? Well this is the place to go if you want to pay $22 for 4 chicken wings. Overpriced for the tiniest portions. Better off going to coles getting yourself a whole roast chicken and adding your own hot sauce!

Ordered bibimbap and chicken for dinner using uber eats and I was so disappointed with the portion...for the price of $40?seriously...It doesn't look the same as it shows in the internet😡😡😡😡

The portions were so small. For the price of $50 dollars we ordered soy fried chicken and sweet Chili fried chicken each costing $21 and all we got was 4 chicken wings in each box. And 9 dollars for the smallest box of chips I’ve ever paid for. EXTREMELY HUNGRY STILL .would not recommend . This was ordered on deliveroo

Great to have a legit Korean place in Enmore. Sweet chilli chicken is the bomb and staff really nice. Only downside is it’s slightly on the more expensive side. Nonetheless Flying Tong is becoming a regular for me

This is our second visit to this place and we were quite impressed by the flavours of their offerings although a limited menu choice. Our visit last night was a different experience from our first. The original fried chicken was a touch greasy and the Bibimbap was lackluster in flavour and felt rushed and tasteless. Not happy jan!

Approaching their one-year anniversary, Flying Tong has successfully added yet another cuisine to the bustling Enmore Eat-street. Korean Fried Chicken and Beer is sometimes all a girl ever wants, making Flying Tong ever so accessible with it's short stroll from Newtown Station. There is a beautiful charm from Co-Owner Julie, manning the front of house, and the stories of the family's recipes being incorporated here, with some hands-on help from ma, make for a pretty homely and cosy experience when comparing other mindless and vacant service levels elsewhere.

Amid a vast sea of mediocrity, I was thrilled to find Flying Tong. These people care about what they do, and it's evident in every step of the experience.

The food... oh, the food. We had two types of chicken: the soy & and ginger (divinely delicious, tender, flavourful, boneless, moist and crispy), and the spicy bomb (holy-crap-hot, but not the kind that just burns; this chicken has so much awesome spicy flavour, I suffered through the pain because I couldn't help myself. My dining companions are stronger, and could eat it as happily as I wished I could; it's only my own weakness that kept me from scarfing it down). (Another happy note is that the coriander is just on top, and easily pulled off for those of us who can't touch the stuff).

We had the Gogi Fries (a beautiful blend of flavours; adventurous and comforting simultaneously), and the cheesy corn. I'm too embarrassed to tell you how many orders of the cheesy corn we got through. They import the corn from Korea, and it's tiny, sweet and tender, like corn should be, with fantastic, stringy, melty mozzarella, and perfectly seasoned.

We were all happy and satisfied. The meals were perfectly portioned, not skimpy, and the prices are reasonable. Service was impeccable. Loved it. Cannot wait to go back.

Really wanted to try this place. The food was just ok, but will we ever be back?? When I say to my self, I really feel like hot chips coated in a sweet soy mayonnaise sauce with shredded beef, fried chicken so hot I need to leave my tongue in my water (and I am normally a chili LOVER), then I'll think of this place. But then, that's probably not likely really.
Be aware, $8 per bottle corkage and small portions....you'll also be in and out in 3O mins as the place is small and they need your table....while they are still in their honey moon period that is.

Flying Tong serves up casual Korean dude food in a tiny, minimalist space. The menu is limited with few vegetarian options. General consensus at the table was that the food was very average and not worth facing the Newtown parking nightmare for. Prices are high yet portions are small. In fact, some of us ended up having a second dinner elsewhere to fill up. I did enjoy the chicken tacos with the corn tortilla adding a new flavour dimension to the gochujang marinated chicken. The fried chicken had a thicker batter than other Korean fried chickens I've had. Of the varieties we tried, my favourite was the Spicy Bomb which had a real chilli kick. Not for those with delicate tastebuds.

Food presentation was pretty, service was nice and atmosphere was pleasant. It was nice to try, but I won't be back - I certainly wouldn't queue to get in. The chips were amazing, the rest of the food was ok. I'm fried chicken fan, but this was too greasy for me and the condiments were not suited to the meals they were served with.

Nothing spectacular.

For a place that does "chicken and beer" there is very little chicken and beer. Comparing to the rest of Newtown if you are looking for chicken and beer you're better off trekking further down towards the city to find a better place.

Price is a bit steep considering the amount of food you get. 4 pieces of chicken for ~$20.

Food was done quite nicely at least so that's a plus.

Melted, oozing, gooey, stringy, stretchy cheese. Buried within it are kernels of sweetcorn. Wait until the cheese starts to brown and form a crust all along the edges. If you just experienced a frisson of excitement over that description, the cheesy corn at Flying Tong is your dream come true. The whole shebang arrives on a hotplate, the kind you get for sizzling Mongolian lamb, except here you score one big puddle of bubbling, molten cheese. Oh yes.

Not much meat on chicken, slow food service and don't sell alcohol. Chicken Institute in Surry Hills is a much better place with similar vibes.

When word on the street whispered about Enmore’s newest Korean fried chicken restaurant, Flying Tong had opened, Sarah, Viv and I knew where we’d be heading for our next dinner. Brother and sister duo Julie and Jeff Oh (ex Kobe Jones) are at the helm of the chicken and soon to be bar joint and pumping out deeelicious food like cheesy corn, bulgogi fries and 4 types of fried chicken
