Been coming to this place since 1999 - always great and one of my favourite fine dining restaurant. I love that they welcome you to bring your own wines to have with their fantastic food. Their wine service is outstanding as well! The dish of the night is crab taglioni - the best pasta dish I've had for a long while.
Last night I had what I think was the a best meal I have had at Matteos, and I have been eating there since they opened 20 odd years ago. The meal was executed superbly, the staff attentive and friendly and Matteo, the consummate host as ever. I hope to enjoy another 20+ years of dining at Matteos
My favourite dining experience of 2017. I dream about food all day and this experience in particular was exceptionally special, delicious, impressive and memorable.
What truely made our visit what it was (other than the phenomenal food), was the fantastic (cheeky and fun) waiter and a sommelier who could read my taste buds like a book. I would spill out some notes, flavours and beverages I enjoy and he would pick a perfect wine to match. Seriously impressive. Magnificent and extensive wine list.
The food is now unambiguously Japanese Fusion but the deserts and the wines are still Italian. Undoubtedly the best example of this sort of fusion in Melbourne it is definitely a crowd pleaser
Attended a function in the private dining room. Service was impeccable. Food was as good as anything I have had at any restaurant. Attention to detail. Complex flavours. Creative dishes. The wine was great also. I cannot find fault anywhere. Well done Matteo’s!!
We had my husbands 70 th Birthday on Sunday 23 rd Oct here . It was a fabulous lunch for 70 people .We started at 12 pm with canapés in the Courtyard ,wonderful selection chosen by the chef . The service was perfect , attentive staff who knew what they were doing . The meal was fantastic with a wonderful varied menu , caterering for every taste & dietary needs .
Everybody thoroughly enjoyed their meal with a delectable selection of deserts . A wonderful day was had by all , it was very hard to get people to actually leave . Nothing was too much trouble for the staff & I wish to thank them all for their fabulous work
Cheryl the manager was so helpful in assisting to organizing the event. All our guests have contacted us to say how wonderful the day was
Thank you again " Matteo's " for a wonderful day
Chris Broberg x
The food was amazing. Oysters wow! Chocolate Pudding wow!
The eye fillet was so good i wanted to swear out loud.
We first went here as a second choice when we couldn't get into our prefered option. We have been here each time we have been back in Melbourne since this night. Last night was no exception, our table of 7 had a variety of entrees and everyone was blown away. The chef has a way of weaving a Japanese/Asian influence on foods that we are all familiar with. My Japanese Trio tasting plate was stunning in presentation and in taste. My main of Duck breast was perfectly cooked and served with a lovely sauce and vegetables. The wine list is extensive and some hidden gems if you scan through your favoured reds or whites. Thanks to the wonderful staff who make you feel very much at home and service with a smile. Our first thought for a special meal or a group night out. Thank you Matteo's and we will see you next time we are in Melbourne. Brad - Perth
We had a wonderful night entree was Spanner Crab Ravioli & Crumbed Zucchini Flowers then the mains Wagyu Beef and Tooth Fish loved it all and will come back again for a special night we talked about it all the next day.
Thank you Matteo's
Fabulous restaurant, food great, staff attentive but not imposing had a great meal will definitely go again
Managed to get a booking the night before lockdown 2.0 and so glad we did! I’d been meaning to try Matteos for awhile and it didn’t disappoint. We did the three course a la carte option and shared two delicious seafood entrees, I had a beautiful gnocchi with porcini mushrooms and my partner a perfectly cooked steak. Service was attentive and knowledgeable, recommending to finish off with a Pedro Ximenez with my cheese plate was a perfect finale.
Fist meal experience post ease on covid19 restrictions.. had the lunch set menu.. WOW!!! what a fantastic selection of dishes, each nicely presented and were delicious and full of flavour... also a lot of food and great value and variety for money. The service from Tim our waiter was excellent and he was extremely attentive, his knowledge of all the dishes and wines on offer shows his passion for food.. a true professional.. love this place and highly recommend it. It’s a lovely appointed non pretentious restaurant with a very warm welcoming atmosphere with delicious food!
The duck breast and pork belly was beautiful.
🤤Twice cooked western plains pork belly
😕Mushroom tortellini
🤤Duck breast roasted with leatherwood honey
🤤Seared Victorian black Angus beef eye fillet
📌Recommend the duck breast and pork belly. Although the duck parfait in the duck dish didn’t taste great or complimenting, the honey glaze was delicious.
Went there for a special occasion dinner. Good atnosphere, reasonably priced menu.
Service was a little slow. Didnt like the eggplant dish. Pork belly was a bit cold. Veal and the toothfish were awsome. Happy with our experience however it didnt have the wow factor
This a first class restaurant , with great staff at front of house and back of house. It has a very good wine list at reasonable prices and a sensational menu. The duck breast I had was by far the best I had ever had,SUPERB SELECTION OF DESERTS .
Thank you to all involved
We went there with a group of 10, including one with Coeliac Disease. Attentive service, fantastic food, great selection on wines (and help with choosing), good advice and lovely experience on booking, one of the chefs has CD as well - a safe and cozy place to enjoy great food and company without having to fear gluten contamination!
I attended Matteo's for a work Christmas dinner and from start to finish, it was quite a pleasant experience. We were seated in a private area but had to share the space with another party. While the surrounding was nice and peaceful, the acoustics of the place made it quite loud.
I had the quail as an entree. This was absolutely delicious! Cooked perfectly and packed with flavour, it was a great start to the evening. For main, I had the duck which was again, beautifully prepared. The duck was tender, juicy and when consumed with the accompanying sauce - a true delight. Then came the dessert platter which was a slight let down. The 3 items on the plate were a bit mediocre so it was not a great ending. It was pretty pricey too but not really unexpected for a place like this.
Certainly not a bad place to visit to start off the silly season!
Service was great! We ordered the degustation menu. Overall was a great experience. The highlight of the night was definitely the baked patagonian tooth fish that just melts in your mouth! The dessert was special, pleasing to the eyes and palette.
One of the best restaurants we’ve been to in Melbourne! Incredible service food and ambiance. Thanks for making our anniversary an memorable one!
Had a two courses express lunch plus a glass of wine here today. For the charge of $49.00 per head, it is absolutely a bargain. On top of the lunch set, we added an order of oyster in six ways as a shared starter. The inventive way to treat oysters in such creative combinations deserves the added marks on the review. Both our entrees of Kingfish Crudo and the Veal & Tuna tartare earned our appreciation on their presentation and balanced taste. The mains of confit duck leg and duck neck meat sausage, and the fish of the day reflected the chef’s culinary skills. No wonder they awarded the two chef’s hats👍
Great restaurant. The environment is pleasant and cozy. The staff are welcoming. The food was well presented and delicious. The servings are relatively small. So, a three-course meal is the least to go for.
Housed in an elegant triple-fronted Victorian terrace, past the bohemian enclave of Melbourne’s famous ‘Brunswick Street’offering seasonal contemporary Australian cuisine and professional hospitality since 1994.Awarded a minimum of 1 hat in the coveted “Age Good Food Guide” every year since 1996.
Came here for a conference and was well impressed with the clear organisation of the staffs. Food were served promptly without great delays between the 6+ long tables of attendees. Drinks were topped up without fail. Food was exceptional and a standout for me was the closing mango panna cotta. Will definitely return for their normal menu.
Absolutely wonderful vegan tasting menu. The mix of Italian influence with Asian fusion was an absolute delight. Enjoying the tasting menu at lunchtime allowed us to experience the gorgeous Melbourne spring sun with fantastic food. The layout/decor of the restaurant gave a fine dining feel as well as an inviting space to enjoy lunch or dinner.
On arrival we were served freshly baked bread and our first course arriving promptly afterwards. The 5 courses were superb with the miso eggplant being my personal favourite.
In total we spent around 1 & 1/2 hours at Matteo’s and thoroughly enjoyed every bit! For a fine dining vegan experience Matteo’s has exceeded my expectations with stunning food, excellent service and all round an amazing experience. Will most definitely be coming back for some more vegan goodness.
Beautiful dinner at Melbourne suburb. European dishes with influence of Asian flavors.
The flavor bomb and finesse began right with the entree. Warm and comforting beefy broth covering al dente dumplings of wallaby tail. The stock was so rich that made such a beautiful bowl of soup in this chilly and windy Melbourne night.
The main of Tootfish was extraordinary. Delicate and lush piece of fish cooked to perfection with miso glaze on the fish skin. Sweet and savory. Complemented perfectly with black garlic sauce. Refreshed with pickled daikon.
The chocolate dessert ended the meal in a fantastic fashion. Warm runny lava cake married with fresh and tangy Mandarin-Brandy sorbet. A hint of bitterness of the sorbet at the end prepared my palate for another spoon of fudgy melted chocolate.
Memorable dinner.
Amazing food and experience.Staff was impeccable in knowledge, advice and overall service. There is a reason you pay more for fine-dining and it is for the unobtrusive, but always at the ready service and Matteo's table service does it all to 5stars.The food was absolutely superb. We had the degustation menu and paired wines were perfection.
My favorite two decisions that you can't go past were the Patagonian Toothfish, which melted like butter and the twice cooked duck, that was equally divine.
A romantic date must do!
The presentations of food are just fascinating in Matteo’s restaurant. Chef and menu have been changed since my last visit but everything’s still reaching high standard..
LIT⭐️: a belated review on this restaurant, but I especially enjoyed the sea food dishes such as the sashimi trio and the kingfish main was very delicious.
NOT SO LIT: the waiters were not as attentive and we spent close to $200 between 2 people and unfortunately were not stuffed. But the quality of food was undeniably tasty!
Thanks for having us! X
Matteo’s has a certain opulence and fitting for a special occasion.
Springtime in London was one of the best cocktails I had - not being overly diluted. The compliments for the oysters were a delicious mix of flavours although the ponzu jelly and sorbet were more tasty on their own. The popular ravioli was not too bad but nothing special and portion was a bit small. The raw sashimi were fresh and delicious. As for the mains, I enjoyed the pairing of the liver parfait and hazelnut cream with a generous portion of duck although the meat was slightly under, rendering it a bit chewy. The fish although fragrant was overly salted with soya sauce and miso. The yuzu cream was a surprise as it was quite a mess underneath the beautiful crispy top and I expected a bit more grandeur with the presentation.
Was our first time here and it was a wonderful evening. Customer service was great, we were taken good care of from the moment we stepped into the restaurant and until we left. The food was good, decent portions and moneys worth. Would highly reccommend the chocolate mousse for desserts, it was amazing!!!! 😍😍
A fairly large yet hidden restaurant in Fitzroy. The venue is split level and looks like it has a medium size function room at the back.
Service was very friendly however I felt they lacked a waiter or two due to the size of and number of people there .
We had the crab ravioli that my partner really enjoyed and snapper and the tooth fish as the main.
Can I just say the tooth fish with the sauce it came with is in my top three mains I had this year!
Cocktails were so so however the overall price of dining of this type of establishment was very reasonable.
Amazing food. Everything was delicious. Great customer service. The staff were attentive. Good wine menu. Great atmosphere. Will definitely recommend and be back.
Impeccable food and service. I very rarely give out a 5 out of 5 rating but I just could not fault anything about my experience at Matteo’s. I’ve been meaning to come here for years and I’m just disappointed that it has taken me this long. I’ll be frequenting this place many times over from now. I would recommend the seafood tasting plate entree, duck breast main and the lemon and coconut dessert. OMFG, food heaven!
I thought it would only be right to publish my best dining experience of 2017 as my first blog of 2018! I dream about food all day and this experience in particular was exceptionally special, delicious, impressive and memorable. Lisa and I visited Matteo’s after a long day and were quite looking forward to a lovely meal and some champagne. Little did we know, what we had in store for us at Matteo’s was much more than that!
Went here recently for a Christmas lunch and was very impressed with the express lunch deal. Such good value! Delicious food and good selection of wines!
Stunning. Gorge. Stunning. My favourite dish was the sashimi plate. The black squid mayo was delish. The prawn foam ravioli was also phenomenal.
It has been a while since I had such a good night with a good eatery. Great calm atmosphere setup! Wasn't too over the top just enough. Service was very attentive and efficient! Food was brilliant! My favourite was the Buddha's Sashimi Plate - consists of kingfish, salmon, tuna, scallops, caviar accompanied with wasabi soy Mayo. The sashimi was fresh, the sauce was spot on which enhanced the flavours. Love it.
Enjoyed a lovely long Sunday lunch at Matteo's recently. There service was professional and personable, the room is lovely and the food very good. We particularly enjoyed stuffed zucchini flowers, and too much wine!
Went here for my graduation dinner the other night. Food was great, had the vegan set menu and loved 4 out of 5 of the dishes. The eggplant one (4th course) tasted rubbery and bitter -- not too good for the price we were paying. The service was also somewhat disappointing considering the price we were paying -- no smiles, highly impatient and very dismissive, especially to my parents who were not the most fluent in English. The ambience was beautiful, but the meals size were tiny so I would not say it is worthwhile if you are looking for a good meal -- $40+ for the smallest slice of pork I have ever seen.
The foods were amazing!! I did not expect how good it would be. The dessert (Eureka Nugget) is highly recommended. The staffs were fantastic and helped us with recommendation and thy decided what wine to match with our food. This place is superb. Will definitely go back sometime in the future.
Mattel fine dinning experience. I am ambit over expected to the food. Sashimi plate and beef tartare is amazing. New modern fusion and totally different from Japanese trational food.
We came with a vey high expectation. The whole decor and environment makes it so cosy to dine in. Staffs were friendly and go through the menu and specials patiently. Have to say the presentation impressed us a lot. Love the crab and the dessert. Some of the main let down a lt coz of the over cooked meat for my liking. Overall it is a nice place to have a date or celebration for special occasions.
Being a foodie who prefers hearty meals, very rarely do I make a call when it comes to dining at fancy restaurants. As D day approaches, I begun to ponder on where to treat a certain someone as it is an occasion that comes around only once a year. Located on the more residential side of Fitzroy North, the restaurant was probably occupied by regulars who liked the peaceful ambiance that Matteo's kindly offered on a Monday night.
I celebrated my special birthday at Matteos last night(9/9) ,with 24 family and friends ,in the Venetian room . Each and every guest commented on the exceptional food , service ( John looked after us and didn't miss a thing , very professional) and ambience. Cheryl was very helpful when doing the booking. It is the 4th big family celebration our family have had at Matteos in the past few years... highly recommended.
Delicious delicious delicious! We had high expectations and they were certainly met, the duck was a stand out. Can't wait to be back make sure you try the dessert also
Matteo's is a restaurant that is close to both my partner and I's hearts. We have celebrated anniversaries here aswell as Birthdays and brought friends and family together. We are always well looked after with some of the finest service Melbourne has to offer. Always with a smile and attention to detail. But where they excel is with their fusion menu. I myself am not normally a fan of blending traditional recipes together from other cultures, but the balance and artisinial work that goes into creating the dishes make this place well worth your time and money. To go along with such amazing service and delicious food is one of Melbourne's best wine list's along with knowledgeable sommeliers to help guide you. It is a testament to Matt's hard work and his staff. Well done.
I've been wanting to try Matteo's for a long while and planned a surprise birthday lunch for my sister's partner. We had the Lazy Sunday Lunch; the highlights were the zucchini flowers with goat's cheese, prawn ravioli and amazing trio of desserts - especially the mini apple tart and peanut butter parfait. Less impressive was the main of steak and beef cheek - the green sauce (not described on the menu) was quite bitter and beef cheek too gelatinous for my taste. Service is faultless; very attentive. Ambience was nice, however the restaurant was quite cold and needed the heat turned on. I'm glad I got to sample the menu for a reasonable price at one of Melbourne's iconic restaurants.
Absolutely amazing dinner. We had the tagliolini pasta with crab & prawn ravioli for entree which were great tasteful starters and kicked our dinner off to a lovely start. We then had the Black Angus eye fillet and suckling pig saddle for mains which were to die for! Absolutely melt in your mouth divine. To finish off the amazing dinner we had passion fruit-lemon sorbet & apple tart which ended the night on a ultra high. The service was also at a class of its own with nothing to fault. All in all an amazing night with my wife for her birthday, she loved it! Thank you Matteos for providing an amazing dinner for us.
Beautiful food and atmosphere. The cod was delicious as was the truffle pasta. Staff were fantastic. It was a formal relaxed environment with good ambient lighting
Beautiful experience, seriously delicious food, clean and classy ambience - this is what dining in Melbourne is all about! We had my mum's birthday here and despite a slight mix up with our booking, we were seated not long after and were very impressed with the Euro/Japanese fusion food on offer. I've been to a few fine dining places and have to say the guys at Matteo's know how to make fine artistic food packed with flavour and generous in serving size! We were given an assortment of exquisite dishes from truffle spaghettini, duck breast, japanese trio (a stunner) and the steak. Everyone left happy and even those with a strong preference for chinese food were pleasantly surprised.
Excellent food and service. The Japanese trio was absolutely delicious and the black cod too but I was a little small. The apple tart is a great ending.
Wedding anniversary dinner was a hit at Matteo's! Good professional service and the food came out promptly. The flavours were spot on but I felt that there was a lot of dependence on Asian sauces to emphasis the Japanese fusion. So here's what we had:
Entree:
Hubby had the prawn ravioli- nice but I felt the tom yum flavour didn't hit the mark as there wasn't any chilli at all. 3/5
I had the crab pasta- came well presented but there was no crab to be seen on my dish. I assumed it was blended into the sauce as it was very rich and flavoursome. But then I spied the table next to us with the same crab dish and there was crab bits through it! 😔 3/5
Main:
Hubby had the suckling pig and wiped his plate clean. He especially enjoyed the tonkatsu sauce which didn't rock my world. 4/5
I had the duck. Was effectively a deconstructed Peking duck dish which I loved. It was simple flavours with Hoi sin sauce. I liked it simple but therefore overpriced at $44. 4/5
The broccolini side dish was very enjoyable.
Dessert:
Hubby was done but I wasn't. We shared the chocolate pudding. Loved it. Simple, nice portion and refreshing. 5/5
Our wines were also very moorish. Can't complain.
Overall a lovely dining experience but perhaps slightly overpriced?
I really enjoyed this restaurant. Compared to many other fine dining establishments the degustation is value for money and not over priced. The presentation and theme of flavours and food of Autumn was lovely. If you are a vegetarian then they have a vegetarian menu with a lot of food for thought and not just odd ingredients or salads. Waiters are a hit and miss. You get the conservative ones and the jolly ones who make your dining experience more at ease and a lot helpful explaining the menu. Restaurant was dreamy and romantic. Great for dates and special occasions. Came here to celebrate a friend bday and I must admit I would come here again for the degustation. Really enjoyed the apple dessert. It was lovely.
We've been here twice now and could not fault the experience. You feel welcome from the moment you walk in the door. The food was exceptional - delicate, flavoursome and original. The service was impeccable. The wine was spot on.
Just flawless. I would recommend this place for any special occasion.
Nice place and the services were top notch.
It felt like we were brought back to London in the 1930s, quiet and romantic. The dining area next to the entrance has this vintage feeling, especially with the fireworks place. Nice touch in winter.
Interesting food, and overwhelming delicious.
Wasn't that impressed with the Japanese trio (may be I still prefer the original jap taste), however the oyster five ways beated the expectation, would also recommend the Marron tail and duck breast.
Had the stones garden for desserts. Really enjoyed it too.
The only set back is there were a lot of yellow leaves in green the salad. Otherwise will give it a 5.
We went here for our book club meeting (we read a good book then go out to a good restaurant to discuss it) and we loved it! The food was amazing, the desserts something straight from heaven to our plates, and the staff were really good. Also loved the fact that despite the fact that it was very busy, the noise level still allowed conversation. Worth a visit or two!!!!!!!!!!
There is nothing bad to say about Matteo's. This restaurant is hands down a stand out. We went to Matteo's for a special occasion and opted for the tasting menu. My partner is a vegetarian and I'm always worried that he won't be full, but he was well fed and then some. We've had degustations before but at Matteo's, you get real value for money - five courses, each dish prepared with care to flavours and presentation. The service here is excellent, and the waiting staff were very attentive. If you're after a fine dining experience, I highly recommend Matteo's.
Superb food, ambience & hospitality.....you can't go wrong at Matteo's. Absolutely nothing to fault & definitely our best dining experience so far this year. I could go on and on about how enjoyable it was; but do your 5 senses a favour and dine there yourself.....you won't be disappointed.
I had the pleasure of visiting Matteo's on the 29/04/2017. Many years ago I was a regular when it was called Mietta's and run by two legends Mirta O'Donnell and my school boy friend Tony Knox.
So it was lovely to go back and see what had become of their 1970's dream.
The current management has both maintained and embellished that dream.
I was greeted at the door by the owner who conducted me to my table.
The service throughout was exceptional and the food influenced by the cuisines of Japan was almost faultless
An Amuse Bouche appeared consisting of finely cooked veal and dressed with slivers of a vegetable
The entree of a mushroom inspired wonton in a broth, both were full of flavours and texture.
My main course was of a perfectly cooked roast duck with a somewhat mysterious rolled pancake, also delicious.
To finish we had a delightfully flavoursome Vacherin.
Matteo's also has a fine wine list with many interesting wines by the glass.
It is great that fine dining is not dead and Matteo's Pignateli the owner is to be congratulated for presenting such a charming and stylish restaurant.

For our last dinner in Melbourne we came here... service is excellent food presentation is excellent... we went for the tasting menu-5 course degustation... to try abit of nearly everything! We basically had: Selection of small taste dishes (4 small dishes) THEN Butter poached WA Marron tail, Gnocchi, Venison sirloin and for dessert Apple tart. The portions were very generous for degustation - mostly everything was a pleasure to eat/try. What a great experience.
Matteo's provided my boyfriend and I with a marvellous dining experience. The waiters were very attentive and knowledgable, catering suggestions as we were so indecisive - there's such a broad selection!
The food was meticulously presented and can be described as contemporary Australian flavours intertwined with subtle Asian hints. Unfortunately, one minimal fault with the food was that the venison in one of our main dishes was overcooked for our liking. However, I definitely recommend the seafood dishes (both entrees and mains) as the quality and taste were spot on.
The atmosphere was painted as soon as we walked through the door; beautiful red curtains were draped amongst the walls, elegant yet dim lighting provided for a cozy, romantic ambiance, and the white linen tablecloths ultimately oozed the word 'fine' in fine dining. Perfect place for special occasions!
DO: The fish or lamb three ways for lunch.
DON'T: Forget the fat yummy chips and dessert trio.
TIP: We went during MFWF so the express lunch was great value. Excellent service however we were the only ones there. I'm sure it would be great when at full capacity.
A restaurant that deserves every bit of this high rating is MATTEO'S. The large spaces of homely dining rooms with comfortable chairs, white table clothes and perfectly toned cream warm lighting welcomes you from the very moment you enter this space.
The service and welcoming staff know what they are doing at every level of conducting a fine dining experience.
WOW factors throughout entire dinner include visual presentation of food, flavours that simply entertained my desire to eat.
Thank you Matteo's for making Christopher's birthday so special. Everyone in the restaurant was experiencing the same wow factor. Look forward to another visit, see my photos as they tell the story.
Great atmosphere and good services. High recommended to try their oyster: 5 ways, black cod fillets-miso flavour , especially double cooked duck.
Was privileged to be invited here for dinner with a group of friends for a birthday. Because we were a group of about 20 we had a smaller three course menu to choose from. I chose the Japanese trio for entree, black Angus for main and the dessert trio. Everything was divine although I should have gone for the cheese instead of the dessert. The mandarin tart and peanut butter parfait were nice, whereas the chocolate dome was delicious with some miso caramel although I couldn't pick the banana. The only thing I could say is maybe our room could have had the assistance from one other waiter from time to time to help with the wine. Awesome night and will def be going back.
A stayer in the inner north for good reason. Reliably friendly and warm service befitting it's hatted status with asian inpired cuisine to match. With several levels and good spacing between tables there is never too much noise to prevent conversation and even with a function in the rear the parties are well separated. Not overpriced for the quality and intimate and cosy on midweek Winter nights. A gem.
Matteo's is a Northern suburbs, two hat stalwart. It has a history befitting the neighbourhood and a reassuring presence that is consistent. . Our last visit was about 5 years ago and I remember enjoying the food but couldn't exactly remember what we ate so it was time for a reminder. When I read the review I wrote last time, one comment was that it was more Asian influenced than we expected...and when we returned to compare, our memories failed us and we had forgotten just how strong an influence those Asian nuances were.
My workplace holds an end of year function here every year and I can honestly say that the food is very good, even when they are cooking for 70-80 guests. I've tried gnocchi, snapper, Japanese plates, and dessert selections and have found each and every plate to be pleasant, played with care and made from good quality ingredients. Bravo.
Fine dining at its best. I have dined at Matteo's twice and on both occasions left feeling very satisfied. The fried quail is a big highlight for me along with the beef cheek that comes with the most beautiful black truffle croquette. I have had the same French waiter on occasions and his wine knowledge is exceptional. Definitely recommend as a special occasion venue.
Awesome food, champagne, and wine! They had a wonderful selection of wines and champagnes to choose from. The waiters were very knowledgeable in assisting one with information to match wines with food. Fantastic flavoursome food prepared with passion and love. Loved every single bite! The restaurant was tastefully decorated. Loved the ambience and vibe. Very relaxing and quiet. The waiters were attentive and friendly. I'll definitely go back. I recommend it to anyone who likes finer things in life!
My family and I had a very pleasant experience at this restaurant. Excellent service as the staff are very attentive and friendly. It is of course on the pricey side. We ordered a number of dishes (1 entree + 1 main for each person).
Entrees:
- Oyster five ways: amazing, so many different flavours. As an oyster-lover, I was very pleased with this dish.
- Sashimi, pork brawn terrine, Japanese trio, chicken and corn soup were said to be very nice as well, they were plated beautifully.
Mains:
- Suckling pig: rich and tasty, crispy pork skin.
- Lamb sirloin, duck breast and scotch fillet were absolutely delicious as well, again very rich even though there's not a lot on the plate.
Perfect place for special occasions. Don't expect to have a normal good quality meal here, what you get in Matteo's is "Art"; you will be served with above 5 stars food and European service. This place has the fabulous food, sentimentality and true sprit of Melbourne all together.
Matteo's in Fitzroy, who said you can't have Two Hat food & service at amazing prices ?
Lunch was cooked to perfection and Charles works the floor alone like a breath of brisk, fresh air. Bravo !
Unbelievably balanced Mirin & Sake oyster shots only $4 each with the Matteo's express lunch - $49 pp including 2 courses and a glass of wine 🙌🏻.
Went there for express lunch, was very happy with my sake oysters (4$) and house wine (7$). Choice of entree and main course with a glass of wine - under 50$. Affordable 2 hat! Good find!
Went here for a Sunday lunch and had a fabulous time. The restaurant wasn't too busy and staff were lovely. We both had the Lazy Sunday Menu and everything was delicious with the exception of the zucchini flowers as the cheese filling in that was very overpowering. Would return again, great value for money with the Sunday menu
I was taken here for dinner tonight, we had tasting menu which was great! My favourite was the lamb course with black miso! Every bite of it was full of flavour and I didn't wanted to finish it, it was so good, desert was white chocolate with rubab, it was great too! Their cocktails are also great! Will definitely be back to try the lamb again👼🏽👼🏽
Only few of The Age good food guide hat chef restaurants, also obtains high rating in Zomato. Matteo is one of them. Overall my dining experience was great.
We can feel that they have put great attention and care to every little components of the food. Honorary mention to their prawn Ravioli which come with beautiful smooth skin, perfectly cooked prawn in curry sauce. Our Angus and beef cheek main was great too with earthly taste of mushroom and truffle.
We love their desserts. The coconut doughnut has lovely balance of sweet sour and coconut. While their Honey Cereal Milk was nice concept to enjoy your usual breakfast as dessert.
To top off our experience, the service was sensational. Enjoyed to see our waiter's gracious move serving our table. They are curteous, helpful, and fun.
A lovely Saturday night dinner at the unexpectedly named Matteo's! With a name like Matteo's one would be forgiven for thinking that you'd be in for an Italian feast, alas, modern Asian fusion was what awaited us. Husband and I opted for entree, mains and dessert rather than a degustation. We had;
ENTREE:
Sweet corn soup with crab (me)
Stuffed zucchini flowers (husband)
MAIN:
Roast duck (deconstructed Peking duck)
Barramundi
DESSERT:
The Waldorf (sorry no photo- I was too distracted by its taste)
Yuzu curd tart with meringue
The dishes were absolutely delicious, the staff were attentive and friendly, and the serves were super generous (not to mention the double serve of bread before entree). The perfect place for date night or a special birthday meal. Will be back there for sure!
Couldn't find fault with Matteo's Restaurant, it was a lovely experience from beginning to end. As it was our first visit there, it was much appreciated that our Maître D' was near the window and immediately able to direct us to the correct door (it was clearly titled 'entry' but we still managed to miss it). We were escorted to our table as soon as we entered, where, on a Sunday evening a few other tables had already been filled with some very contented looking and sounding diners.
It's a great sign when the list of dishes leaves you desperately trying to cut out any one dish because all of them sound so delicious.
Drinks and water were offered immediately, while we waited for the other members of our party. Quality cloths on tables and for our laps, and a very classy vibe combined with the unobtrusive but friendly service left us in no doubt we were in a classy location. We'd notified the restaurant that one guest had a gluten sensitivity, so that while the rest of us devoured the gorgeous bread, butter, and umami-flavoured sprinkle, a gluten-free roll was provided. The staff also ensured that they recommended dishes that either were already or could be made gluten-free with modest changes.
We ordered from the 'a la carte' menu. After reading other comments, I couldn't go past the Paradise Prawn Wonton Ravioli. The sauce was luxuriously creamy, but managed not to disguise the delicate sweet seafood in the extremely plump wontons. The Lovely Man tucked into the most glamorous version of a Chinese sweetcorn soup - Mooloolaba Spanner Crab and Sweetcorn Soup, the soup poured around the crab at the table with genuine flair. Both entrees, and indeed others at the table, are generous and I didn't hear anything other than praise for all dishes, including: Japanese Trio (especially the steamed silken tofu) and Tempura Zucchini Flowers and the special for the evening the Bouillabaisse.
Mains, were as difficult to select from as starters, but, I couldn't resist the idea of a slow-cooked beef and a piece of steak. So it was I went with the Cape Grim Black Angus Scotch Fillet. I couldn't fault it, and two others ordered the same, each of us to a different degree of done-ness, a great test for the chef. A medium, a rare and a bleu (me). Each of us got exactly what we requested. Loved the little roll of mashed potato that was disguised as a truffle...because it was covered generously in truffle - oh, yum. The shiitake mushrooms were beautifully 'meaty' but tender, beef cheek was fall-apart tender and the pumpkin just right. The other dishes enjoyed also seemed to go down a treat, the highlight for my partner was his Suckling Pig, he delighted in every bite. Other dishes that went down a treat were the Seared Flinders Island Lamb and Chinese Roasted Duck Breast - we didn't order any sides, but they look lovely.
Between us, we managed to sample every single dessert! The Cereal, Milk and Honey was so lovely, a perfectly silky, crunchy, cold, mixture of comfort and surprise. My other half cannot resist doughnuts, so he was always going with the Coconut and Doughnuts, the most interesting dessert from the description was the Waldorf - the components of the famous salad turned into sweets, and apparently it was fabulous. Again, there wasn't a complaint from the sweet selection, only lots of 'mmm' noises. The most dainty sweet treat, the 'C Spot' at just $8.00 looks just perfect for the dessert you have when you're really too full for dessert! Rich and scrummy, but a more modest portion.
Glasses are kept refilled, seating is comfy, and on a Sunday night at least, parking is easy. You can BYO which some of our table chose to do.
Can't wait to go back.
I had dinner here last night. My friend and I had the 5 course tasting menu. The food was well executed with strong flavours. Some dishes better than others. They took their time between courses which was good. The desert for me was too sweet and there was far too much of it compared to the other courses I would have thought the desert would have been smaller. The let down with this place was the service. We had to chase down waiters to order more drinks and to fill our water glasses. Overall the food is very light on the asian influence, strong on flavour and you will eat food you wouldn't normally experience.
The name, decor and location seem to suggest a cruisine not expected. Asian fusion! Service was great, even the biodynamic wine. Food however was not as great as expected but portions were good for the 5 meal degustation.
There's a reason this place has survived, a little bit away from the main drag, for so little long. It's just GOOD. Expensive yes, but it's a special night out kind of place (unless you're loaded. There were plenty of well heeled lawyerly looking types, maybe it's their local). Japanese fusion Matteo-style is delicious. The sushi selection was dish of the night. I'm still devastated that I could not under any circumstances fit in dessert. There was some kind of peanut butter parfait thing that looked awesome. (They're not too stringent on the Japanese fusion thing, I think delicious comes first as a guideline). Great service, the sommelier appeared at my elbow as the last drop disappeared, and I was happy to see him. Every time 😀 There's no pretension, just a great restaurant being well run and much loved by happy customers. Wishing them another ten years!
Came for the 5 -course tasting menu, and boy did it start off well. The 'small tastes' were nicely presented, creative and absolutely delicious. Easily the best course of the night.
The courses continued to go well until we came to the main dish of Duck and Corn. The flaw of this dish was that the corn was far too overpowering. I mean charred corn, corn shoots and a pool corn purée! Come on guys, let the duck and that beautiful togaroshi sauce do its thing! Luckily the desert saved the evening after the corn fiasco.
All in all, worth a try!
Came here to celebrate my friends birthday, we had the pleasure of eating the Banquet. Food was fresh, high quality, well-presented and perfectly cooked. Portions were quite big especially for the dessert, we were all absolutely stuffed and I think nobody finished their dessert/cheese!
We all agreed that out of the options, the best entree was the prawn ravioli - ravioli tasted freshly made, prawn was juicy, soft shell crab was crispy on the outside and this all went well with a laksa-like sauce.
For the mains, none of us got the barramundi but we preferred the beef over the duck. The duck was juicy and cooked perfectly, but we weren't a fan of the sauce as it too sweet and slightly strange tasting - we preferred it without. The beef was cooked according to request and the truffle-flavored potato mash was absolutely delicious. However, I couldn't say that everything on the plate was nice, as the the vegetables were too sour.
The desserts and cheese platters were both delicious, it would depend on whether you have more of a sweet or savory tooth. The desserts were so rich and sweet though you couldn't have much of it, especially the chocolate one. The coffees were very average compared to other places - but I didn't expect much else since they are not a cafe.
Atmosphere was romantic, service was absolutely lovely. Overall a pleasant fine dining experience, there was about 45mins between each course which was a bit long for me, even though this is apparently normal for fine dining (I'm not much of an expert in this area unfortunately!) I would prefer if some of the food was flavored differently, but that's just my personal opinion.
A group of friends and I had lunch at Matteos yesterday. We had a group of five, and only one in the group had been here before so we were all quite excited to give it a shot! We decided to go with the à la carte menu over the set menu. For entrée I had the Paradise prawn ravioli,
soft shell crab, Penang laksa sauce. The ravioli was filled to the brim with delicious fresh prawn meat. The flavour of the laksa sauce was strong but not overpowering. Soft shell crab was beautifully cooked (one of my favourite things to eat). For mains I had the Autumn mushroom sauteed with garlic stems, spelt, water spinach, crumbed egg, porcini sauce. This dish was beautiful and flavoursome, but unfortunately just too rich for me. I tried to cut through it with some sides (steamed bok choi, fried royal blue potatoes), however it was just a little to heavy and I was only able to eat just under half before throwing in the white flag! For this reason I skipped dessert and finished the lunch with a pedro ximenez. I left Matteos very full and content, and felt the service was polished and attentive. The perfect restaurant for a special occasion.
Absolutely fantastic place to dine. Great food ,great atmosphere ,great service .The meat dishes are amazing . It's recommend for all sorts of tastes .
Came here for a birthday dinner and with a party of 12 we had to settle for the $90 3 course set menu. Definitely a good variety to choose from entree, main and dessert. I opted for the Japanese platter for entree, scotch fillet for main and the cheese platter for dessert. Japanese platter was a nice assortment salmon, bug tail and kingfish. Flavours were spot on and the freshness of the fish was evident through the texture of the flesh. Moving onto the scotch fillet, this was done to perfection (rare) and was accompanied with a black truffle dumpling and vegetables. The dumpling was delicious and the truffle had plenty of punch. For dessert, the cheese board was overly generous - blue, cheddar, brie, fig chutney and fruit toast. I'd say the platter is good for two people possibly three. The atmosphere was intimate and when you can hear each other in conversation without raising your voice, you know you're at a decent place.
A top notch, chef hatted "must try" fine dining restaurant and excellent value 2/3 courses lunch. The menu is inspired by Asian dishes and awesome flavour. Excellent presentation, impeccable service and cozy romantic ambience. Absolutely enjoyed the salmon tartare, pork belly and lamb w Beetroot. Big thumbs up.
Matteo's provides an interesting mix of Asian/western fusion dishes, some of which are amazing (prawn wonton ravioli) but others just average (char siu pork and chicken pie). Service was excellent and would recommend for a nice fine dining experience
An" Institution" and hands down , My all time
Favourite Restaurant in Melbourne!.......
It has been at least 6 solid years of coming
to Matteo's and the menu, Service and outstanding
detail to making your night a memorable one never fails!
This restaurant simply speaks for itself and is why it
is up their with the Best!.......
Such lovely food, ambience and staff. Could not recommend this place highly enough! We had the most wonderful meals here and experience.. Will definitely be back
We went here in November 2015 for the first time. We each had the tasting menu's (one vegetarian, one meat). The food was amazing and the ambience nice. They altered the meat tasting menu based on individual preferences which was good. The only let down was the wait staff. Although they were informative, they were unfriendly. It was an expensive meal, however for a special occasion, it was very fitting. Highly recommend based on the food.
Been here twice and can't make any complaints. The best part is probably the service. Waiters so knowledgeable and friendly, willing to help with anything. Food was equally incredible. Cater to vegans with pleasure, felt very welcome. My food has been delicious and outside the square everytime.
Came here for Sunday dinner. Ordered four entrees, 3 mains and a dessert tasting plate. Really enjoyed the duck dish!! Desserts were nice as well and the potato on the beef dish was probably my highlight of the night :)
However did not enjoy the pork dish and some dishes lacked flavour. Don't think I'll find this place memorable or would come here again. Just an average okay place. I've had better, Plus, bread and butter were pretty mehhhh... Service was pretty quick though :)
As usual a splendid meal. The only down side was the noisy back room crowd. Must avoid that next time. The food is always impeccable and the waiters consistently pleasant. The in house bread is enough to want you going back.
Feb 28th 2018 - Returned for another anniversary dinner. Again pleasant surroundings but felt a bit left out when Matteo went around the tables shaking hands and kissing his regulars (i've only been eating there for the last twenty years with various groups and privately) but the focus was on a table at which a celebrity restaurant owner was dining with her entourage. Not even a "Good Evening" as he walked past. The waiter, also preoccupied with the same table, was not really interested in the fact that the Wagyu Rump was so tough at one end it couldn't be cut let alone chewed. Oh and the bread is not quite as it used to be. That may be our last dinner there sadly, having promoted it to our friends and relatives for many years as the go to spot.
This lived up to its reputation as a 2-hat restaurant. Superb service and great food presentation. Everything was meticulously finished. Best part was that we could BYO. Good for special occasions.
Food was excellent. Modern Australian flavors with subtle hints of Japanese. The flavors were not over powering but fresh and enhanced while maintaining the original flavor of each ingredient. The entrées were very creative. The rabbit dish had so many components and shapes, it was beautifully presented on a bed of porcini sauce (which had a thin consistency almost like a broth), The tempura okra was so unique! The rabbit was cooked to perfect tenderness. The scallop ravioli also had soft textures and flavors to contrast with the crispy calamari splashed with a subtle flavor of ginger & dashi broth. The pork was also cooked tenderly with a semi-sweet glaze, some lightly crisp exterior with exquisite accompaniments like a modern take on kimchi and smokey sauce. The second main of the lamb filets and croquette was also cooked to perfection served with a special citrus black pepper sauce and a sweet pickle onion that brings out the flavor of the lamb with every mouth full. The Al la carte menu meals were of sufficient portions. As lovely as the food was for our first time here, service wise, unfortunately was a bit disheartening and does not match my standards of two hats. The waiters were well and neatly presented and were friendly enough to serve and answer questions, the food came out in a timely manner, however, they were not initiating to provide advise or recommendations, they seemed half distracted with other things even while taking our orders. On arrival, the lady at the door failed to see our booking on the list and we had to show evidence of our booking confirmation at the door, we were then seated right at the kitchen door which was the busiest section of the restaurant. I understand on a Saturday night it was very busy as there was a relatively large function during our dining experience but there were extra waiters allocated for this function. Another issue i had was cutting my lamb fillets, I recommend the restaurant to provide sharper steak knives for this purpose. Overall a good food experience however service standards were compromised. Where is the passion Matteo's?! : (
Last season - A really special night for me at Matteo's but besides that I loved everything about this restaurant. Matteo was an amazing host who greeted us as we came through the doors. Intimate atmosphere, nice and quiet, the waitresses had great personalities and were really attentive, the quality of the food was spot on, you definitely got what you paid for. I was quite full after my heavy main but I couldn't say no to a creme brûlée and I'm glad I did try it because Matteo's creme brûlée is probably one of favourite creme brûlées EVER.
Great food and a range of wine available. Definitely a fine dining establishment, with a range of modern Australian cusine
A bit pricey (as you'd expect). Service was lovely. Just had a small issue where the wrong dish was given but was quickly rectified
We went here for our anniversary dinner and oh man the ambience itself feels so warm and perfect for a date! We went for the tasting menu and oh my each dish simply blew us over one by one!
Our favorites were definitely the oysters, beef tartare, crudo, toothfish and dessert! Their wine selection was fantastic as well along with a great variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic cocktails. Their service on top of everything was impeccable!! Highly recommend!! PS: I personally am a big fan of dishes with great complementary sauces! Matteo's definitely pleased my fussy palate! The chefs really know what they are doing💯💯!
This may be the very pinnacle of fine dining. So much so I look forward to coming back to this place because my experience there was truly amazing.
My partner and I went as we have heard nothing but great things and we were prepared for an amazing night of fine dining.
What a time to come because they had their 25th anniversary menu which consisted of the chef's favourite dishes over the last 25 years. Seemed as if the universe had aligned for ourselves or we just struck gold.
So let's get into it. Matteo's is such a popular place but what makes it even better is the ease of finding parking upon arrival and being 6 hour parking you don't feel like you need to rush to avoid a parking fine especially in the City of Yarra.
We were warmly greeted at the door and ushered to our table. Matteo's is immaculate when you enter. The staff are dressed formally and the cleanliness of the restaurant is second to none. Everything is meticulously maintained and the spacing of the tables makes your evening/night one to remember as you don't feel like you're competing with other tables to converse.
So upon sitting we were given the drinks menu and the menu for the evening. Which we had already viewed online. When we dine we normally stick with the tasting menu and sure enough it didn't disappoint at Matteo's. Also I probably should have taken a photo of the menu to show what we had but excitement for great tasting food always gets the better of me.
So I won't bore you with the details and I'll sum our evening up in one word.... Phenomenal!!
Matteo's truly is a beautiful place and if you love fine dining then it's a must try.

We missed out on our workplace Christmas dinner last year due to covid restrictions so we had to make up for it. Matteo’s in Fitzroy is where we go every year and it was really nice to be able to visit again and pretend like it’s Christmas.
The 3 course meal was deliciously delicate. I had the crab pasta for entree, the steak for main and a caramel tart for dessert. Everything was prepared with care and tasted great. Service was attentive but not intrusive.
Christmas in July…it always sounded hokey to me but with the cold weather, it’s not such a bad concept. ☀️
We had dinner here and the food was tasty. Standouts were probably the kingfish crudo, saffron spaghettini and parfait cigar that came with the duck. The 6 year old kid loved his pasta and there’s a kids menu with plenty of options available. They also give you generous amounts of warm bread at the start.
Food came promptly and the ambience of the restaurant was good.

Really Delicious food and amazing service and atmosphere -thank you for making our day so enjoyable -Will definitely be back
Great dinner options and friendly staff. The food and cocktails were delicious, the porterhouse, duck, quail and kingfish were all particularly good. I highly recommend getting a cocktail to begin. Only thing missing for me was a "wow" factor.
