Sensational food and it just kept coming. I love the concept of the platters, shared dishes and set menu ideal eating with a group. The more people the better! Then there are more variety of dishes. The mint tea with sweets was perfect and I don't usually like mint tea! Perfection would be freshly made flat bread and some smoking jazz playing. #foodcoma #morrocan #tasteaustralia
Amazing food. Maybe best meals I have ever had. So yummy, healthy and tasty...real food! no artifical vegan meat etc...
The owner is fabulous, the food is orgasmic, and the ethos is progressive, eco-friendly and respectful. This place is my favourite restaurant in Melbourne!
I heard such amazing things about this place before finally getting to go myself and It was even better than the rave reviews I’d heard before! The warm & welcoming ambience, the care towards all various allergies, the hearty & healthy food all nourished my soul and my belly! I can’t wait to go back and share the experience with all of my friends. 💕👏🏼👌🏼
Amazing food absolutely loved it and the owner is such a nice lady. Also adore their lunch room on Lygon Street. Definitely recommend!
Last night we had what was probably the finest vegetarian food in Melbourne. We felt the love that went into the selection of ingredients and into the preparation. It was like visiting old friends and having a meal.
Such a beautiful and welcoming atmosphere.
Thanks to all the staff members. We hope to see you again soon.
I had my first dinner at the Moroccan soup bar in 2006, haven't missed a month since. Combination of heart felt vegetarian food together with warmth from all the women behind the scenes of this amazing place makes it a worth while experience. Ten years later we still arrive as though it were our first time. Deeply grateful for you're kindness generosity and love from the mint tea to you're food, to you're presence and beyond.
Amazing food&great atmosphere!! I can strongly recommend this place to anyone ; )
Visited for the first time and left with my heart and stomach feeling happy. Love everything the Moroccan Soup Bar stands for especially the connection with food. Thank you to the amazing staff for the best service and experience
The food is always fabulous, but the only down-side is that I can never finish everything - the serves are so generous and filling.
I love the smiles and the sense of family and community here.
It's one of the gems of Melbourne's multicultural community that I'm always keen to introduce to visitors from interstate or overseas.
I think this is the best restaurant in Melbourne. The atmosphere, people and...food.All amazing! For sure worth waiting
What a wonderful place!! Delicious food, fantastic staff, great atmosphere and Hana is amazing! Thank you so much!! I love your cook book!!

Pleasant dining experience every time I visit! It's one of the places I take my out of town friends to show off vegetarian delicacies that can only be found in Melbourne. Always busy packed with customers but a part of me do enjoy that hustle and bustle vibe and energy this place gives off. We opted for $30 pp. Menu hasn't changed much since last year but instead of tea, they gave out lemonade (which I thought was an improvement since the citric kick balanced out rather nutty richness flavour). They also did add some dishes that came out with pita bread (didn't know what they were) which were absolutely delicious. Baked chicken peas was amazing as always and they truly feed you until you are absolutely stuffed
Decided to come here last minute to see friends that we hadn’t seen in a long time, due to transport issues, ended up arriving here past 9pm. Despite the restaurant being full and it being late the staff were incredibly accomodating and managed to get as a table within 10 minutes. The food was amazing and reasonably large portions, impressed by variety and authenticity of the food. The staff continued to let us finish our food and insisted that we had deserts before we leave. We really appreciate the customer service, they were attentive and patient, despite how busy the restaurant was. Would definitely recommend and come back again.
If only I could find a man that could satisfy me as much as this soup does! 😍
One of the best restaurants in Melbourne - you will want to eat this food every day for the rest of your life. Nothing from the dips to the chickpea bake to the Turkish delight is anything less than a 10/10. The staff are so kind and helpful and the vibe of the restaurant is very vibrant and welcoming. I have many happy memories here. 🤎
Incredible food and service. Reminds me too much of home and traditional foods and sweets!! Cant wait to be back inshaAllah!
What a place! It was just amazing, honestly amazing... The whole concert of this place is unlike no other, I love that there isn’t a menu and you don’t know what you’re going to get u til you get there! Amazing value for money, I mean it is insane to think about how much food we got for $32 a head (Special Banquet)
If you’re on the hunt for traditional Moroccan food, this fully vegetarian restaurant is the place for you!
Morroccan Soup Bar has been popular for over 10 years and is renowned for the chick pea bake.
It's an vegetarian set menu, but you won't miss meat at all.
At $25 per person, you'll get an entree, mains and dessert.
Upon seating they will provide some hot mint tea, which is slighty sweet and refreshing.
*Entree - selection of dips and vegetables with pita. The hummus is deliciously creamy and the yoghurt has a nice sourness. Perfect to get your appetite going.
*Mains - chickpea bake is as good as I remember. Soft chickpeas on a bed of pita crisps with yoghurt and topped with toasted almonds. There is also a taste of burnt butter drizzled on top, the flavours are really going well together and it's a very textural dish. Love it.
The vegetable cous cous is also really tasty with a tomato vegetable stew on top of soft cous cous.
There is also a plate of lentils, eggplant on top of rice (glutinous rice I think), saffron rice and yohurt.
*Dessert - with tea or coffee, you get a selection of pastries - mini donut balls, baklava, shortbread and a soft cinnamon fruit ball.
I was so full, I just asked for the dessert takeaway and finished the sweet coffee there.
It's a really good experience and you get so much food, but be prepared to wait for a table if you're not there 6PM on the dot. They only take bookings for 6 or more!
Great food and really good value. Unfortunately the cutlery were a bit grimy and our order was lost for a while. Also, seating could be a bit better. We got seated quite quickly, which we are very grateful, but my window seat had little to no room between me and the door which meant people coming in kept knocking me and also on a cold night, it didnt feel that good to freeze every time the door opened (which was A LOT because it's such a popular place). Overall, really tasty, but more thought could be given towards the finer details :)
Although it can be difficult to get a table without a long wait (no bookings and quite a small eating area) it is well worth it if you have the patience.
There is no menu and it is mostly sharing plates which really is the best way to eat middle eastern food. Everything is packed full of flavour and 100% vegetarian. The servings are a good size, well priced and I’ve never left hungry. The staff are all super lovely and friendly.
It’s been a LONG time between chickpea bakes! 13 years in fact. But it was just as great as I remember it, this time with kids who loved it too.
We came in on a Saturday night. The place was buzzing with a deafening bunch of people who’d been out all day which was a shame as we struggled to hear ourselves. Noise aside, we jumped in for the big banquet.
With more food than we could eat (byo takeaway container if you want leftovers or you can buy one) the chickpea bake remained my favourite though the entree baba ganoush was right up there. Too much to name, the only down side being the one cup of tea... then $8 for another pot that didn’t quite get us a second cup each.
To me, as a carnivore, this place is everything a vegetarian restaurant should be, not pretending to be anything else. Yes. We’ll be back, hopefully in under 13 years!
Amazing food. We had the regular banquet which was more food than we could eat. The food was authentic and delicious. The service was very quick and friendly. They sat us down immediately even though it was very busy. I highly recommend this place and it’s become one of my favourites.
Food was glorious. It’s been years since I visited Moroccan Soup Bar last. We had the special banquet tonight. Entrees, some tapas, mains and dessert with refills of sweet mint tea. The tapas dish was very delicious. It’s all vegetarian but who needs meat when everything is this heavenly. Each dish is full of flavour and is made of fresh ingredients. I found the popular baked chickpeas a bit too rich for my liking though. I love the tagine and the lentils and rice. Come early and be prepared to queue. Also this place doesn’t serve any alcohols.
Unreal unreal unreal! With $28 or $33 banquets, Moroccan soup bar is sure bang for your buck. The entrees, mains and desserts were amazing! Halloumi, Turkish delight, chickpea bake, delicious dips- you name it, it was all amazing!
The Moroccan Soup Bar has been a favourite for years. I love the down to earth, friendly, warm atmosphere, and the food is delicious! I am consistently blown away by the abundance of the banquet and the array of flavours on offer. The chickpea bake is a favourite; crunchy, sweet, buttery, tangy, yum! All vego, and catering to dietary restrictions, this a place for a hearty feast! Using simple ingredients, the dishes are full of variety, flavour and mojo.
Amazing service by the female staff and delicious food. Got the feed me plus desserts and was left fulfilled. Great entrees mains and desserts.
For someone that dreads the idea of vegetarian food, I found myself more than pleasantly surprised when I visited this lovely restaurant a month ago. While they are incredibly busy, the food is piping hot when is bright to the table, the portions are generous and the food is definitely delicious!
I recommend getting the smaller banquet if you're not too hungry as the portions are quite large and we struggled to finish all of our food - not complaining about the leftovers that I had for lunch the next day though!
Highly recommend this place even if you're not a fan of vegetarian food like myself.
My all time favourite restaurant. Will continue to come back here for as long as its around. Beautiful food, beautiful atmosphere and lovely staff!
Great vegetarian food that is very moreish. It is always super busy and can take a little bit to get seated but it's easy to understand why. The banquet is ridiculously cheap and the chickpea bake is out of this world. There's so much food they allow you take home whatever you can't eat if you bring your own container.

This place was seriously hyped by friends and family alike. I was warned about he queues and it lived up to the claims. We arrived early for a 6:30pm dinner on a Thursday. The standard banquet meal was suffice and yummy. Staff were very accommodating of the GF coeliac requirements and brought one GF and one normal platter for our table of three. I found the baked chickpea dish the yummiest but it was all tasty. The desserts were extremely sweet.
For someone with food sensitivities I was impressed and think the place is best suited for those that like Moroccan/middle eastern dishes and legumes a plenty!

Easily one of the best vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.
Welcome to the Moroccan Soup Bar nicely located in North Fitzroy with good parking out the front and across the road but do read the parking signs.
I arrived just before 6pm and there was about 10 people on the seating outside or waiting to enter.
Doors swung open right on 6 and within ten minutes the place was full of patrons inside and out. There were three of us and one was running late. We were politely told that there was a booking at 7.30 which was fine. We were done then anyway.
Mint tea is served up quickly as well as water.
We didn’t view a menu and just asked for something simple. We went with a vegetarian serving for 2 even though 3 of us. Plenty of food. We also had desserts which were a nice blend of Turkish delight, baklava and other relish delights served with tea. Food came out fast and just adored all the women working so fast and efficiently all with a smile.
The decor is stunning and although I would’ve loved to have snapped more pics I was conscious of the amount of people in the restaurant and being intrusive. If did ask one of the staff if I could take a photo of her henna hand and she graciously agreed. Some of the signs where you are pay are ‘interesting’ and very pertinent. The hippy in me was loving this place. Toilets clean. Kid friendly. Wheelchair friendly. Seating outside.
I will return and bring others to enjoy such a brilliant dining experience.
We were lucky to get the last table at 6:15pm on a Tuesday night. For $25 you receive; 1st course of a plate of dips and bread to share, 2nd course is about 4/5 delicious dishes, and 3rd course is a small plate of sweets to share. My favorite dish was the chickpea main. Bring your own Tupperware otherwise excess food will be composted.
Absolutely LOVE this place. The food is amazing! The chickpea bake is to die for. The venue makes you feel at home - almost like someone invited you to their house and is cooking for you. Service is also great. Very kind and friendly women. And lastly unbeatable prices.
Easily one of my favorite restaurants in Melbs. Can‘t recommend this place enough!
How good can soup get? Well, this place proves, pretty good! Hearty and filling vegetarian soups and side dishes. Super cramped and tight, so be ready to wait or elves drop on the conversations of others.
I wish vegetarian always tasted this good! I’m still dreaming about the chickpea bake and the copious amounts of hummus I ate here! We decided to get a big group together as bookings are only for 6+ people and there is always wait for walk-ins - even at 6pm! We ordered the $30 banquet and there was more than enough to go around. Service was good in the limited space they have. It was a little frustrating to be served dessert 5 minutes before it was time to leave for the next table to enter, we didn’t think the banquet included dessert at that stage.
Don’t forget to BYO Tupperware to pack lunch for tomorrow!
Love this place and can’t wait to go back! We ordered the banquet and there was more than enough food to go around. The staff were very polite and service was great. The place was packed and atmosphere was great. Definitely worth it
Really good food. Nice waitresses. We took the 25bucks menu and left with some leftovers.
Good value for money.
Clean toilets as well which is meaning a lot.
Arrive early or don't be in a hurry it was fully packed even though it was only a Tuesday evening.
Finally got to see what all the hype was about! I had heard that it was a must try and totally worth the wait and now I see why. With a completely vegetarian menu, Moroccan Soup Bar aims to make every dish as flavoursome as the next but the stand out was that iconic Chickpea Bake.
From the moment we stepped out of the line and into the restaurant, our whole dining experience was seamless. The staff are friendly and attentive and the portions were extremely generous for 2 people. We opted for the $25 option and were pleasantly surprised with the amount and variety of food. Make sure to bring those spare containers - you really won't finish it all. I can't wait to go back again it was such a lovely dining experience.
What a wonderful dinner experience! Friendly staff, Amazing atmosphere, and most importantly incredible food!! The wait to get in can be long, but it is well worth it
I’m certainly not a vegetarian but this place is excellent. Good value has a great food selection of Moroccan dishes and it’s amazing flavours. Highly recommended if your vegetarian or you like to try something different! :)
If vegetarian tasted this good, I would eat that way more often. Having been here before, we ordered the big banquet for an amazing value of $30pp and came prepared with a container each. The generous portions meant there was ample left over and we all had enough for lunch tomorrow.
Be it the numerous appetisers, the three main dishes or the desserts and mint tea, the constant explosion of flavours and fragrances really distinguish this place from any other vegetarian places I've ever tried. I balked the first time my friends brought me here (what do you mean there's no meat or seafood?!) but tonight I was the one that wanted a revisit.
The Chickpea Bake should be in the Hall of Fame - chickpeas with garlic yoghurt, pinenuts on a bed of pita chips. We had been looking forward to this ALL week and it was fantastic.
For the 6pm sitting on a Saturday, we arrived 20 minutes early to get a decent table. We get 90 minutes only for the sitting but the food comes so fast there was no waiting. The place is mega busy with a steady stream of customers coming in for takeaway, bringing their own containers and pots!
The long room pays tribute to the exotic colours and cultures of Morocco and staff are super efficient and polite. Cash only so come prepared! Here there was neither soup nor a bar, but we happily experienced Middle Eastern taste sensations that have few rivals in Melbourne.
I LOVE THIS PLACE!! Such great vibe, such amazing food, such big portion and such affordable price! There was only verbal menu and you only get two options: the $25 standard or the $30 special. We got the $30 one. There were appetizers, mains, tea and desserts. We had absolutely no idea what we were eating but still had a blast! That’s how good it was. We tried to eat as much as we could but still only managed to finish about half of it. Make sure you bring your own takeaway containers. This place opens at 6 and there will definitely be a line, but it’s gonna be worth it.
Arrived 5 minutes to 6pm and there was already people waiting out the front. Welcomed and quickly sat down, provided with lovely mint tea. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable. Extremely easy to organise group of 3 banquet, one vegan not a problem at all. Food is absolutely stunning and came out not long after we ordered, especially given it was a full house by the time we ordered. Perfect amount of food, dessert included in the banquet. Atmosphere is awesome and just adds to the whole experience.
Definitely worth waiting for (or get there early!), well and truly surpassed expectations and has the reputation it does for a reason! Couldn't resist buying the recipe book!
I shared a mixture of dishes with friends. The food was tasty. It tasted pretty fresh. The desserts were good.It was great to be able to have vegan options. Would have liked to stay a bit longer, felt a bit rushed to leave.
Not familiar with this cuisine and honestly had no idea what dishes I was eating the entire time, but I can also honestly say that it was one of the most memorable dining experiences I’ve had in Melbourne. The flavours of the chickpea bake(?).... definitely an unforgettable stand out dish for me.
I’ve driven past this place infinite times and I’m glad I finally got to witness the commotion between those tiny four walls. Why?
1. There’s no a la carte menu . You either get $25pp or $30pp. We opted for $25 and we also had enough leftovers in our Tupperware for lunch the next day! Winning!!
2. The place is like a Moroccan marketplace, with a line outside before 6pm (no bookings, I would recommend go early to line up or you’ll be waiting a long time)
3. Friendly, fast, and damn efficient service
4. It’s all vegetarian and there’s no booze. Cleansing.
5. Mint tea. Twice.
This is a perfect winter hideout, I can understand the popularity now and can’t wait to do it all again.
If you’re looking to get the hippie, cool and splendid feel of Brunswick, this is the place to go. A range of colours and textures and flavours. No one will be disappointed, even my uncle (who is a big meat fan) was enjoying his plate. It’s unique and fun. Great space. A little tight, but it works.
Loved the unique concept of the “spoken menu” which apparently varies each day. Had dinner for two and as we’re not huge eaters, we shared the bigger banquet for one. Dinner came to only $30 for two, which is amazingly good value for how much food we got (didn’t even finish one banquet between two)!
Three courses - the first was a variety of dips and condiments served with pita bread, vegetables and chips. Had no clue what we were eating for the main, but didn’t matter... it was all delicious and so full of flavour!
Last course was a couple of small treats including yummy baklava along with complimentary tea or coffee. An incredibly cheap and cheery meal! Would come back any day for a new surprise menu.
This place has been on my list to try for a while so when your group of friends suggest to meet here for dinner it was an easy yes!
All I can say is wow, wow and wow.. Loved the flavour of all the dishes! I would come back in a heartbeat. Also noticed numerous patrons coming in with pots and pans and leaving them filled! Possibly what I'd consider doing the next time having guests over for dinner ;)
This place blew my mind, amazing Moroccan food, friendly service. I love the surprise of not knowing what you’ll get. The portions are huge too. Bring your own Tupperware!!
This place was very impressive. We went here for a bday group of 15 and was able to book a table. The selection was simple but tasty and we didn't even notice there was no meat. It's a lively venue and has a lot of charm. I would definitely come back with my BYO takeaway container.
One of the best meals I’ve had. Loved the vibe and the ethos behind the restaurant. I’m very keen to share this with other friends and family.
AMAZING VEGETARIAN! I have lived in Northcote for 8 years, and FINALLY trekked to MSB about 6 months ago. I go back far too often as this vegetarian delight is too good to knock back, both eating in, or takeout (BYO container peeps!). Every dish is amazing, particularly the eggplant one, and the chickpea bake is just phenomenal. Always great service too, you may have to wait, but it's SO worth it! See you next week (for forever!).
Every serve was delicious and a great reflection on the love put into the preparation of each dish . The large banquet at $30 pp is great value and showcases Moroccan and Vegetarian cuisine for the uninitiated . The best way I'd describe The Moroccan Soup Bar is that it's excellent authentic home cooking served in a friendly and humble restaurant that'll fill you up and leave you a smile of satisfaction. Would I come back ?......You bet I would !
First of all, it is not a place only serves soup. If you have no idea what is good, just try the banquet. As a meat lover, I was a little wary about vegetarian dishes. However all dishes in the banquet were full of flavour and really delicious. You will be surprised how tasty vegetarian dishes can be and I would love to try more healthy and flavoursome vegetarian dishes. Lovely and helpful staff make you feel like home. Recommend a big group to share the banquet and if you need to take away, make sure you are bringing your own container. Or the shop next door would sell takeaway boxes.
Highly recommended for both vegetarians and meat lovers. Enjoy and bon appetite!
This place is incredible! Our first time here I was shocked when our host first announced that it was a purely-vegetarian menu (seriously, I looked at my companion like “What the hell are we doing here!?” - LOL) but I am a complete convert!
I’m not saying that I’ve been converted to being vegetarian but every single dish was so incredibly tasty and full of texture and depth, like really, I was genuinely taken aback. I did wish we had like a piece of grilled chicken or some gorgeous medium-rare lamb to complement it all but I must say this place is absolutely delicious. So if you have a vegetarian friend you’re catching up with, you can be sure to come here and not feel like you are compromising. It really was a beautiful meal. I will be back. No vegetarian friend required. Highly recommended.
Such a fun and delicious restaurant. Everything tastes amazing and it’s quite affordable too especially given how much food you will have. It’s about $30 a head. They don’t have a menu, they just tell you what there is to eat. It’s all vegetarian and healthy too. Very yum. Get there early to avoid queuing for a table.
This is a longer review based on one year of regularly frequenting Moroccan Soup Bar.
While the name of the restaurant is a misnomer (they don't serve soup and it is not a bar), this restaurant has truly made me appreciate vegetarian food like no other (this is significant because I am mainly a meat eater). They also differentiate themselves by only having a "spoken menu" in which you don't have a print one in your hands.
Food: I cannot do justice to the flavour profile of ALL the dishes served here. Your meal starts off with small appetisers which include dips and pickled vegetables such as baba ganouj, hummus, cauliflower mash etc served with bread or carrot sticks.
The mains include a variety of dishes like lentils, some rice, eggplant, and the legendary chickpea bake. The chickpea bake has lots of - you guessed it- chickpeas, garlic yoghurt, pine nuts on a bed of pita chips tempered with butter. It is a hit with everyone. The meal is finished off with a plate of mixed Morrocan sweet treats and a small, strong coffee.
Food accommodations: They can cater to gluten-free diets and offer alternate glutenfree options.
Service: The staff are friendly and perform very well during peak hours. They helped me arrange my husband's birthday celebration here where we brought in a crowd of 19 people and it went wonderfully well.
Pricing: The pricing system is confusing. The general price is $25 per person for a shared banquet - the quantity of food can vary for the same price, especially if you have a bigger group. We have paid different amounts of money for two different dine-in experiences for the same order. Confusion can occur because one cannot refer back to a printed paper to see exactly what was ordered for how much money.
However, pricing of their takeaway food is consistent (and also depends on how much food you are given in takeaway containers which you must provide yourself). Since the last two pricing mix-ups, we prefer to do take away orders.
I would still rate this restaurant 5/5 in terms of flavour, rating 4/5 only because of pricing mixups. Definitely worth a try, but watch out for being addicted!
The food is amazing! If you're new, you should definitely try their banquet! You should definitely get your own containers as there will be a lot of food leftover.
After a lot of recommendations we finally were able to try this place. Came unexpected so didn’t bring containers. Therefore we chose to dine in. We sat on the bench which was a lovely spot to people-watch. It was super busy (Sunday night), a coming and going of people with containers. We got the banquet at $25 pp. Didn’t think that was very cheap, would’ve liked another option with less food and cheaper. We had quite a bit of leftovers, so searched for a container in our car, which we found so we took leftovers with us. The food was comforting and everything vegetarian.
Service was fine but nothing special.
I am in love with this vegetarian restaurant. I was a bit skeptical when I first went as I love meat so much however after my meal I was not only so full but entirely satisfied. The food is tasty and cheap. You can also bring your own container for them to serve you takeaway which I found super cool. The chickpea bake is so good - its a MUST
Been here many times with large groups and smaller groups and have always enjoyed the food and atmosphere. The banquet includes a really nice selection of dishes! Recommended for vegetarians and non-vegetarians!

This place is fantastic! My friend and I were lucky enough to cruise in and snaffle an outdoor spot on a beautiful summer Tuesday night. The service was so quick and friendly, and they loved my dog which is always a bonus! I can't remember what food was served, but we opted for the $25 meals and didn't regret it. There was one dish in particular I loved - I think it had crunchy pita pieces in it. There was so much food that we had leftovers, which we put in the containers my friend had the foresight to bring with us. St George's Road is such a lovely spot to hang out on, the perfect "people watching" position though Edinburgh Gardens is a few minutes' walk if you wanted to get takeaway. Can't wait to go back.
There’s only verbal menu here, that’s right, took me awhile to register this concept. The waitress informed what was available for the day. It was tempting to order $25pp for two entrees, two mains and dessert but luckily we opted for one of each because the serves were huge.
Nachos with chickpea sauce was delicious.
Main came with about 4 varieties and a rice. Most of them didn’t have much seasoning or flavour but tasted quite nutritious.
Selection of dessert was too sweet overall but worth a try.
Hot peppermint tea (sweetened) was really refreshing!!
We had all this for less than $30 which was a bargain!!
Great place for vegans and vegos and the tables get filled up quickly so arrive early!!
Amazing !! For a good price you can get a good feed. I’ve been here 3-4 times always, the chickpea is my favourite !!! Definitely would recommend this place.
We’ve been meaning to venture out to Moroccan Soup Bar for some time now as we’ve heard nothing but great things. Davin has always been a bit hesitant given it focuses on vegetarian dishes and he sure loves his meat, however I have especially been really appreciating vegetarian dishes lately so was keen!
We ended up checking it out with our dear friends who are vegetarians for dinner one night. Nestled in Fitzroy North, they only take bookings for 6 or more people so we thought we’d just see how we’d go with lining up for a table. Surprisingly for a Saturday night we got a table fairly quickly. The only thing I didn’t like was that we were told we would have to vacate the table within an hour. Understandably it was packed and bustling and there were probably other people waiting This didn’t give us much time at all, particularly as we all recently came back from our travels and wanted to catch up on everything. The food came out super quick but it felt really rushed and we felt pressured to leave too quickly.
There is only a verbal menu or alternatively you can pick from 2 banquet menus which were $25 per head or with some additional tapas, $30 per head. We were keen on the $30 banquet given Davin and I are such big eaters however the staff convinced us to try the $25 banquet first as she told us it would be plenty of food.
Boy was she right! Unfortunately given there wasn’t a written menu, we can’t go into too much detail about the ingredients of the dishes. However we can say that every dish was packed full of wholesome flavour.
We started off with a plate of dips and vegetables which included yoghurt, hummus, carrots, eggplant, olives and potato. It was very yummy.
Then came the main dishes which came out sharing style. There were a number of dishes which had combinations of rice and vegetables, and a vegetable stew. Our favourite dish however was the chickpea yoghurt bake. The combination of the chickpea yoghurt with the crunchy textures within the bake made it one killer dish! It was delicious!
For dessert, a number of sweets were offered on a plate such as turkish delight and baklava, We were also given a lovely aromatic mint tea to have during our meal and turkish coffee to have with the desserts.
Overall it was a good experience. The food was very impressive and full of flavours. Staff were also very attentive. As mentioned above, a little more time would have been appreciated as an hour just felt way to rushed when you’re catching up with friends over dinner. The price was also very reasonable for the amount of food you get. So if you’re keen to try some great wholesome vegetarian food, it’s worth checking out.

Having followed the reviews and media attention of MSB these last few years, I finally decided to visit myself and try it out. Sadly the food was not exceptional and far from authentic. Having visited Morocco earlier this year, I can say dishes like the chickpea bake, hummus and baba ganoush, rices are more Levantine than Maghrebi while the stewed pulses reminded me of Ethiopian cuisine. Indeed what I found in Morocco was an abundance of couscous dishes and no rice or yoghurt or cheese, and any dips or soups were made out of mainly split peas. Regarding the sweets, only the harissa (semolina-based cake) was Moroccan, Turkish delight and baklava being sweets I encountered no where during my travels. Despite this, the food was tasty overall (but again, not exceptional) and the tea was good and the staff friendly. But seriously, stop promoting this place as a taste of Morocco. We aren't all like the culturally ignorant Fitzroy alternatives who frequent MSB and praise any mildly spiced vegetarian dish as fabulous (being used to bland "Australian" food from their childhood).
Moroccan Soup Bar | Fitzroy Nth
Okay so first off, I want to start by apologising for the lack of pics lately. I visited Moroccan Soup Bar last night for dinner with some friends and omg, the food was so delicious that I completely forgot to take pics hahah I just wanted it inside me
There are a couple of reasons why I think you should visit MSB, first the food is great - & it's all vegetarian. I love meat so much, but the flavours of this meal are so well balanced I didn't even miss it! Second, MSB are advocates for social justice and they are passionate about donating to food banks and hosting events aimed at educating people and facilitating discussions to create a more cohesive community, which is something I both respect & admire.
We ordered the supreme banquet (pictured is our delicious entree) followed by a chickpea bake that has truly changed my life for the better (and I'm sure my waistline for the worst 😉) There was rice and soup, tea/coffee and dessert for a incredibly reasonable price of $30pp, we left MSB at the end of our night with our hearts warmed and our bellies full!
I honestly have nothing but good things to say about MSB and I think many are the same, that's why there's always a line outside the door but it's worth the wait! Grab 5 of your closest friends and call in advance to make a booking to save yourself a spot. I promise you won't regret it!
Who doesn’t love Moroccan Soup Bar? Absolutely delicious, affordable and healthy food. If you can get in early and get a spot away from the walk way, it’s awesome to sit in and enjoy the banquets. However it’s not an easy walk-in on a Saturday night. Staff are good, but I wouldn’t say this place is for the fine diners. You can also get take away if you bring your own containers.
You won’t leave this place hungry!
Another amazing banquet. Totally worth planning and booking ahead to secure a table. The $25 banquet is a perfect amount of food. This place never gets tired.
Amazing food. But not the best service. Staff served us the mains first. I would still go there again for the food.
Chick peas were awesome. Portion sizes are large and people bring takeaway containers to take their leftover food.
I have been here many many times over the last ten years. I went again tonight and had the standard starter dips plate, chick pea bake and a desert plate with mint tea. Everything was PERFECT! The staff are friendly hardworking legends. I cannot praise this crew enough 👌🏻
Feb 8th - just visited again but with my in laws this time. Standard Starter. Chick pea bake. Teas and coffee with dessert plate. $45 for four people. And the food was just as fabulous as always. I was actually at a very high profile melb Lebanese restaurant last night - I’m not naming names because I don’t wish to be rude - but I will say that their $60 a head banquet had absolutely nothing on Moroccan soup kitchen. Incomparable. Honestly. MSK rules ✌🏼
We are a group of 5, and ordered 30/pp. We barely finished half of them, which is shame as they only provide take away when you bring your own containers.
Flavour wise was really good, have different mixture flavours, and every one can find something they like. Definitely will go back.
I got takeaway and it was delicious! Love that you can take your own Tupperware containers in. There was enough for lunch for the next two days aswell. Only a 15 min wait. So cheap, will be back.
My family ordered a 4 person banquet and we were all really impressed. The dishes came out quickly and tasted like a warm home cooked meal. Portion sizes were large and staff were really friendly. Catered for vegan and vegetarian diets.
Fantastic food, generous and affordable. Have been here a few times and never been disappointed. Only critique I have is unfortunately we were asked to leave after 80 mins so they could turn over the table, so better for a quick meal than a catch up with friends
Probably one of the best meals I've ever had.
The place was packed so we had to wait around 45 minutes for a table for 2 but it was so worth the wait.
We paid $23 each for the banquet and received and entrée and 3 mains to share (there was a dessert too which was average).
The food was so delicious I will definitely be back!
Fantastic food in an ambient setting. Only $25 for a banquet of surprises, including dessert and coffee. My favourite was the chickpea bake, although none of the dishes could be faulted.
We ordered take away. I was sceptical as there was no menu to look at. Brought in my Tupperware and they fill all the 5 large containers. We had enough left over for dinner the next night. I have nothing else to say except YUM!!!!!
Came here 6.30 on a Sunday and it was already full. Only had to wait an hour for a table of 4 and boy was it worth it!
$25 for a 3 course meal is such fantastic value for money and the quality of the food is outstanding. The food arrived super quick, the dips were delicious and the carrots - what do they do to create so much flavour!! Main meals were also very tasty and so much variety. Only down side was I'm not use to so much dairy, so I will ask for vegan next time.Desserts were also really good! Loved the turkish delight and the little pancake with orange blossom water flavour.
Can't wait for another meal here, can't recommend highly enough!
In aggregate, everything (from the food, service, dining environment, and the fairly priced menu items) was great.
I seriously don't know how they haven't expanded.
After read so many good reviews about this place, i finally made a trip there to try this famous Moroccan resto. It was Thursday evening and the resto was packed. We had communal table that only available for 1.5 hours, i was thinking "Geez it must be really good". We ordered their banquet so we can try a bit of everything. Its $25/person get us 7 veggies couscous salad, mixed dips with pita bread, baked chickpeas, and mixed vegs. Their famous food is the baked chickpea. It was tasty but its a bit too much yoghurt for my liking. The dips was tasty, and the mixed vegs was nice, however i won't rate it 4.7. Banquet comes with dessert and mint tea. The dessert was too sweet but mint tea was nice and refreshing. Its a green cafe so they dont provide plastic container, i saw many people bring their own containers for take away. Overall it was good.
Top quality cuisine and the service is always great. I only wish it wouldn't take so long to get a seat, but once you're in and you tuck into the first bite, waiting to be seated becomes a distant memory.
Soooooo amazing! I've heard great things and wasn't disappointed. They alawayd seem to be buzzing, so expect a short wait for a table. It's $25 for a banquet which left my boyfriend and I totally satisfied. It came with dips and flatbread as tapas, three main dishes and also dessert and tea. Will definitely be coming back!
Just love it. It is a different journey all together. It is busy happening place. Food is really good. Go with friends and go for large banquet. Every dish is authentic and indulge you and take you to morocco.
I have been wanting to try this place for quite some time. We were a group of 5 and ordered the $30 banquet. Entrees were nice, I loved the dips and potato salad the most. Portion sizes on the mains were generous and some dishes were yummier than others. The service initially was very slow, we weren't given any water at the start and had to ask for some after waiting a long time. Also our empty water bottles were never replaced unless we asked for more water. The restaurant was busy and business is pumping which was great to see. The vibe here is nice and warm and I would recommend a visit here.
Food
This is place is my favorite vegetarian places in Melbourne, food is absolutely amazing, service is great and atmosphere is real and welcoming.
Hana is great host, a must try nothing like it
booking is a must.
Amazing spices and sharing plates, bring your tupperware because the food is delicious and abundant and the owner doesn't like food waste!!!

One of my favourite Melbourne places, this is a cosy, authentic little restaurant in a great location.
The Moroccan food here is to die for. It's a spoken menu so have a chat to the staff about what's available - I highly recommend the banquet which includes some dips and picked veg and mixed Moroccan veg dishes. I usually go the small because when I order the large I waste way too much. Bring some plastic containers in case. Everything here is vegetarian and as far as I know, there isn't any alcohol. The only downside is it is incredibly popular so you pretty much have to arrive at 6pm when they open or expect to wait well over an hour for a table. They also do takeaway, just bring your own containers! If you like this place try their sister cafe, Moroccan Deli-cacy in Brunswick which is open during the day.
You cannot get any better value for your money than the food at Moroccan Soup Bar! You can tell that the food has been crafted with a lot of love and care. Unpretentious soul food so delicious that you will forget that it is all entirely vegetarian. The wait times can be long but it is completely worth it! Staff are friendly and service is prompt from the time you order off the 'verbal menu'. We got the 3 course banquet and we were extremely full by the end and could hardly finish everything. We loved all the dips and our favourite main was the chickpea bake! Dessert was beautiful and so was the moroccan mint tea. Overall, we highly recommend Moroccan Soup Bar :3
