Best dirty chai ever! My expectations were low. My energy was low. But the second I tasted it, my spirits lifted. Perfect blend of flavours.

A very busy cafe/bakery...and can feel a bit chaotic at times.
But their bread and rolls are great...and go early. They tend to sell out quite quickly as well.

Consistently good. The brunch/lunch menu is simple and well-developed, the baked goods are always great, and service is friendly and attentive yet understated. One of my favourites - always try to go whenever I'm in the area. Recommended.

Had a lovely lunch here with my friend one chilly autumn afternoon, and it was still quite busy. I was struggling to choose between the chicken and beef sandwiches, and the waitress was really lovely in helping me choose. I went for the chicken option, and it didn't disappoint. It had the perfect combination of lettuce, avo, chicken and mayo, and was toasted to perfection (it seems they took the lettuce out before toasting, which is always appreciated!). The sandwich was extremely reasonably priced at $10.50. A great option in North Fitzroy in a cute little street of St George's Road. I'll definitely be back.

When I want to eat a nice brekkie and don’t feel like trying anything new, Dench is definitely one of my go-to places! They always serve beautiful food and lovely coffee. Bread is delicious and freshly made daily.

While tucked away somewhat, in Scotchmer Street you'll find Dench Bakers. Not a place that I had previously come across, but it's decor and general vibe meant I simply had to come in for a spot of lunch on a pretty chilly Melbourne day.

I went for the soup of the day: some contraption that didn't look particularly appetising but was hearty, tasty, and did everything a good soup should do. I was warned up - now time for some solids.

Next cab off the rank was the halloumi, which was really poached eggs with some halloumi, with a decent smothering of asparagus and a little natural sweetener in the form of pomegranate just to balance it out. As you can see, the eggs were poached nicely. A really nice addition was the olive bread that this was all served on. Being a lover of this Mediterranean staple - the humble olive - any such flavour is always welcome, but in this case it really complemented the meal.

A little on the expensive side (including any takeaway bread or sweets you might buy on the way out), but generally you're paying for quality. Definitely worth a visit for those in the area.

4.2 for mine.

Best cafe I’ve come across in this area. It’s slightly tucked away but not too much. It’s a feel good space with an understated but cool style. The lovely ambient music playing at just the right volume helped the mood as well. The server I had here was a beauty. Sharp as and full of information, personality and humour. Sometimes not easy to pull off without coming across as a smart Alec but no danger of that here. A very good operator.

It was cold day and I felt like a soup. Chestnut and mushroom was the server’s recommended option, with my preference of seeded bread not sourdough (people, read the Harvard studies about the wonders of whole grain).

The soup was superb. A perfect soup for my taste. Ideal food for this weather. I also went nutso over the bread which was toasted so perfectly you could have mistaken it for an art piece. I was advised that this bread was their best seller and I can understand why. It was fantastic with great texture and flavour and just the right accompaniment for the lovely, very well made soup.

There was sensational coffee here as well. Deep, rich and delectable. Best I’ve had for a while. I was advised it was Code Black coffee . A beautiful brew with incredible length and brilliantly made too.

I’m in a bit of shock about how much I enjoyed it here. Things are done simply but with a quiet understated style, confidence and best of all, competence. A good place that I heartily recommend.

Well is absolutely stunning. Feels so cozy to sit and have a coffee in this place. I love all the pastries they make, and I always get the buns to make burgers at home. :D

The lamb, veg and barley soup was absolutely perfect. It came with 2 peices of warm freshly baked toast with butter on the side - oh so good! The chai tea was excellent. Go there! :)

Spend my weekend right at this amazing bakery and brunch spot at the heart of Fitzroy north! You will need to try out their beautiful housemade pastry and bread as well as heaps of brunch menu. Loving their Mexican breakfast with chorizo, tropical pancake stack with poached rhubarb and mango sorbet and the mind blowing Atlantic salmon with wild rice. Super yum and hearty🥰 💚Atlantic salmon 💚Mexican breakfast 💚Tropical pancake

A large cafe with a great menu. I was spoilt for choice w some great dishes to choose from. The menu is great, but it was hard to choose a dish lol. I ended up ordering baked bacon and eggs w pancetta ham & bacon, thick brioche, beetroot hummus, semi dried tomato & macadamia. The presentation was the best I've seen in 2022. Such a level of detail. The second vegetarian dish was Roasted Tomatoes, Grilled halloumi, semi-dried tomatoes and macadamia pesto, goat cheese, gran bread, snow pea tendrils, pomegranate, pepitas, balsamic glaze and a hash brown. Phew, try saying that after you have a Bloody Mary hahaha. BTW the Bloody Mary was spicy and the celery crispy! Yum. This cafe also sells Dench bread which we all know is great, right? The 100% rye is absolutely delicious and the small carrot cake was moist, with some yummy icing and walnuts. The service from all the staff was friendly welcoming. My strong almond latte which was really good, I didn't see the brand of almond milk but I'd buy it. Oh and I almost forgot. I had a Bloody Mary too, and this was spicy, with nice cold tomato juice and fresh crunchy celery. Just how I like it, thank you. Overall this was a solid experience in a very handy location, with plenty of off street parking in the car park across the road, on street parking everywhere and attentive service. It doesn't get much better than this. Highly recommended. [Invite]

I recently had a great breakfast at Dench Cafe in Fitzroy North. We ordered the Brunch Buddha Bowl, the Dench breaky board special, a Hot cross bun, a Peanut butter jelly smoothie and coffees. Everything we ordered came out beautifully plated. The Brunch Buddha bowl was a bowl of goodness. Featuring tabouli, spinach, roasted cauliflower, roasted tomatoes, smashed avocado, pickled zucchini, a soft boiled egg, salsa and beetroot pesto it was colourful, fresh and healthy. My friend highly enjoyed it. I had the Dench breaky board special which comes with a basil & coconut panna cotta, a potato & herb rosti, scrambled eggs with jalapeño & chives, chorizo and a pear & roquette salad. I enjoyed each of the components of the breaky board and thought everything worked well together. The hint of basil in the panna cotta nicely balanced out the sweetness. The great thing about a breakfast board is you get to try a little bit of everything, it’s the perfect way to have something sweet and savoury. In addition to an extensive breakfast and lunch menu, Dench Cafe also sell a great range of breads and pastries. I noticed plenty of regulars making purchases whilst I was there and I couldn’t resist ordering a hot cross bun which was delicious. Overall I had a lovely experience at Dench Cafe and I recommend checking them out if in the area. I rate it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5. Thanks very much for having me.
