Review North Fitzroy Arms - North Fitzroy

Went to a 90th birthday celebration with around 40 guests. Lovely atmosphere with log fires and live music Food was great with ample servings. Would recommend

One of the best pubs in North Fitzroy. classic old school with FFC lions memorabilia, typical traditional pub counter meals big, tasty and healthy. Pizza, porterhouse steak, fish and chips, chicken Parma, chicken schnitzel, vegan options. Like a country pub in the city, in a lovely old corner building with classic pub furnishings, fireplace and vibe. Plenty of specials everyday and the midweek lunch is amazing value from $10 with a pot đź‘Ť. Family friendly and a great pool table and beer garden. all pints $9 Monday to Friday, and plenty of other beers, wine, cider and single malt scotch whiskey on the menu. The menu changes frequently with a creative chef banging out some delicious food specials.

This is the type of pub you hope never leaves. Lots of history which is easily researched. The weekday lunch prices are insanely well priced. A Parma and a pizza with a side of gravy was only $26 and comes with 2 drinks. The Parma was a massive portion, served hot and fresh, chips well seasoned and crispy and great to see a good quality salad with nice fresh vegetables. This was $15 +$1 for the gravy which was a little under filled but delicious ! They have a $10 pizza lunch also which rotates each week. I had a pizza that had roast pork, ricotta, apple..?, rocket leaves and balsamic vinegar. Must say, way too much going on here. But I appreciate the that the chef is under pressure!, and for $10 was great. There were only two options available. Would be great if they could provide a simple Margherita option too. The dough was quite soggy, maybe not cooked in a high temperature pizza oven. But individual elements were nice and quality. Service really nice and unpretentious. Served in good time and a nice dining room. I would highly recommend this spot !

Exceptional, whopping sized porterhouse grilled on point! Amazing Sunday afternoon band and the happiest chilled vibe.

Wow what a treat. Atmosphere was fantastic. A big group of seemingly football enthusiast's seemed to there to enjoy and honor their football legend hero . Percy G.meal was a real big country meal check out the pic of my meal. An iconic old Melbourne Pub. Visit well.recomended. check out the real log fires

Proper pub, great staff, broad menu to suit everyone. Wish it was our local and we're weren't just visiting from Geelong!

Great pub with excellent food and friendly staff everything you need in a pub

Recently I had beer and dinner with Footy Almanac writers. Good atmosphere and great place to talk about footy. I feel the pub as the home of socialising in Melbourne. Percy is friendly and a gentleman welcoming and talking to me. It was a good experience to talk to a former footballer as a Japanese visiting Melbourne. Plus good to see his milestone at Carlton Football Club with photos. I enjoyed having beer and dinner and will go back at the next visit to Melbourne. All the best folks!

A hidden gem, plenty of character to it, staff on duty very welcoming, a blend of different areas to explore including courtyard, menu looks great although we were outside dining hours and didn't eat!

Charming and Welcoming does not begin to describe this great pub in Fitzroy North: Encompassing all that is good and great about the area: acceptance, diversity and great food! We all arrived in our "Kate" costuming after the "Biggest Withering Heights Day" in Melbourne and were accepted by Percy and Georgia and all the gang! They could not be more helpful: The food and drinks are reasonably priced and there are daily specials! Don't wait! Just head there today and enjoy what is one of the few old fashioned, unashamedly olde world shamed pubs still in existence in the City! Thanks for the fun and relaxed atmosphere!

Charming little pub , friendly staff , good food , not expensive, great AFL memorabilia all throughout , nice open fires , good cross section of clientele and most importantly the publican is Percy jones . Be back there real soon 🍺

Great pub, great service and the best Gluten Free Chicken Parma in Melbourne. The pub is warming, welcoming and owner Percy Jones is a great man. The pub has lots of Fitzroy Lions and Carlton Blues Memorabilia which is fantastic. Go down with your partners and friends and have a beer and a meal. I'm definitely going back in the next week or too with my mrs. :)

I live locally and visit this pub probably 3 times a week. The locals that also visit are great to chat to and welcome my five year old. When the staff know you by name it’s a good thing. Food is fantastic. Overall it’s a 10/10 from me.

absolutely love it. great place to relax, have a meal, have drinks in a friendly atmosphere, with very welcoming staff.. i highly recommend it to anyone for a great night!!!

Used to be such a great pub. Chicken was burnt under the parma, chips were soggy and cool. On the positive, staff were nice though.
Robert Pearson
Great little pub, amazing food and open fire place... Plus I live around the corner ..lol

Friendly staff and the food was lovely :-)..................

It's basic pub grub - thats about all you can say. Staff are very off-hand. Probably more where you go to drink and have a bowl of chips.

Love this place !! The home of the Roy boys , perfect for an afternoon Brew and some pub grub.

Great pub, awesome service.

Food not as described on menu. Staff rude and really didn't care when problem was brought to their attention. Quite rude actually. Won't be back. Place has changed. Sray away would be my advice. Plenty of other options out there.
You know, I’ve always liked this pub. For a long time I’ve wished it was my local. It just has a good feel. On a beautiful warm quiet Melbourne day it was near to nirvana. A lovely spot for a quiet wine. The odd patron happy. The staff in a good mood. This place has never had the best food, beer, wine or atmosphere but it’s just always worked. I think I’ll always come back here.

Such a warm welcoming old fashioned suburban pub. Great food for very reasonable prices. An interesting selection of wines and beers on tap. Some superb collection of Carlton and Fitzroy Football club historic photos. The 2 open fire places in the main bar are a must on a cold winters night.

Haven't been here for a few years - previously it was a warm, inviting, friendly venue with staff who cared and excellent food- apparently no longer the case with new owners. Wait staff don't want to be there, food selection super basic (e.g. Parma, chips, steak), zero atmosphere and basically a disappointment. Parma was covered in ice cold tomato sauce straight from the fridge and the rack of lamb while yes should be a little rare, was tough and a struggle to cut. Never again.

CAN NOT RECOMMEND! I've been a frequent visitor to this pub in the past, so I was looking forward to coming back with work colleagues after many years of not having had a meal here. Wow what a difference. The rare Angus Porterhouse that I ordered came out like a well done piece of rump. And the mushroom sauce was so sparse I got no hint of flavor from it. On the plus side, the veggies were well cooked, and the chips nice also. Determined to push on, I tried one of 2 desserts - the poached pair. Again, have to say wow. Under cooked to the point of being raw - I don't think they even bothered to pretend with this and zap it in the microwave. To the point that those of us that tried one had to resort to a knife and fork to get the job done. If I were offered a steak knife I would have accepted. Again, on the plus side the mascarpone cream that accompanied the pair was delicious. But I can't recommend this! And if you're GF because you have to be, unfortunately the waiters gave us no confidence suggesting all manner of options that would be cross contaminated.

A rare find, a pub without pretensions. The food was for the most part was old style standard pub fare, but excellent in its range and presentation. All meals @ the table of 4 were uniformly delicious and generous in their portions. Wood heaters kept the atmosphere warm on cosy on a cold Melbourne day. Highly recommended for a long afternoon on a dreary Melbourne day.
Parma Daze
As my odometer clicked over to the big “33” last week, we decided to push our Thursday parma review to Friday, Affording us the ability to kick back and enjoy a few pints in celebration without having to worry about being seedy for work the next day. Our target location for this salubrious event? The much recommended North Fitzroy Arms.
EmmDee
Friendly service, chilled vibe and standard pub fare with all the usual staples. Our table of six ordered schnitzel, steak sandwich, risotto, steak, burger and Parma. No stand outs but all were freshly prepared and hit the spot.
Alcobon
Solid little performer! This place has come leaps and bounds recently. It's not a gastro pub, but a solid traditional pub, draped in history and charm. Given it's off the main street, it's a local haunt. Prices are reasonable, food is great and the service is friendly. Great courtyard for dogs too!
Krang
Worst parma in Melbourne. Gluggy tomato slop and a mess of cheese, without any ham, makes for a very sad chicken parma. Never again. Blasphemy.

FABULOUS VEG AND GF OPTIONS. Very good menu choices with many GF and veg options we had the vegetable stack, fabulous!
82 year old meat eater has now converted to vegetarian as a result.
Kendrickfindsfood
New chef, good prices, quality feed. Will return - cheers cobbas
Corrado Crupi
Basic pub food with average menu choices, not restaurant quality. Vegetable stack as a main came as a stoggy potato pancake with greasy slices of zucchini & eggplant topped with a sweet tomato sauce. Fried fish was all batter

Brilliant. Fantastic hearty food! The chef is brill.

Thoroughly enjoyed my meal, we had eye fillet steak with a side of vegetables and wedges (we were starving). Steak was cooked perfectly! The Olivia Shiraz went down really well and I bought a bottle to take away. Service was amazing. The staff couldn't have been any better. I'll definitely be returning.

Sometimes you want a quiet beer and a good old yarn. Sometimes you want to feel the quiet atmosphere of an authentic pub with down to earth servers and no prevention. The Arms offers easy, relaxed service and an atmosphere of what Aussie pubs used to be.

Why would you come into a hotel with meals under 15 bucks and expect to be waited on hand and foot, in this old easy you put your hand up and get a beer instead of expecting to be served. In the arms you make the time that you want. It's old school, it's a memorabilia adorned memorable atmosphere, but you have to be a measured attendant to make the most of it. Don't expect what you don't pay for. Make it to the Arms to make it your own.

Terrible. I'm surprised to see menu described as European, tapas, seafood.....the menu was pathetic and no better than a very daggy suburban pub. A couple of years ago it was fabulous - now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The wine list was pathetic too. The menu and wine list on their website was nothing like the one that was offered to us. Absolutely rubbish and rude waitress who when asked if there were any other wines on offer, replied "I don't know, you're the one with the wine list". Gulp! When we where leaving we saw there we're some other wines opened not on the list......had to wait an hour for our meal too. Never again

Getting there, slowly.. I keep cutting these guys some slack. We're locals and used to eat there regularly when Volka owned it. It was warm, welcoming and the food was good without being spectacular. They really went downhill FAST when the new operators took over. But they seem to be trying and clawing a little territory back (no doubt helped by the medium density housing explosion happening at Nicholson/Rae). But it all comes unstuck in small things. One of the last pubs with two open fires in the bar and they are, on a cold night, extremely stingy with the wood. Guys, it's frigging wood, not gold. Put some decent logs on both fireplaces and get a name as a great warm, snug place to go in winter and you are made - even with average-ish food.

Mr Horsey. Dermott makes the best coffee. Surprising for a pub. Awesome place!
Rick
Do ur self a big favour pls dnt go to this place food is a disgrace no quality for the price
Raj
Seriously bad food for the price should hav rabbit on the menu for winter like royal oak around the corner

Tuesday taco night is fun and cheap!

Still an inner city fitzroy icon. There is a fine line between glamming up a venue and paying homage to it's roots and the role it has within it's locality.
There has been a slight glamming up but fortunately the Arms is still a great inner city pub with inner city bar/lounge and dining meals, chalk board specials and nice items off the menu in the dining room. (with table cloths).
Anyway, the beer garden and lounge and public bar anre fantastic complete with open fire place and great beer on tap and no drama ordering a melbourne bitter either. The service is the friendliest i have ever had the pleasure of at an inner city pub, and is consistently excellent. We enjoyed the steaks, cooked to perfection both in the public bar(cheaper smaller cut) and the lounge/dining room, for the 300 g plus p\house with generous sides. We have had the burgers and the fish n chips and again, perfect, bountiful crispy, light and fluffy.
Value is good, though i feel the prices have the potential to rise above that for which the premises is known for. Service is excellent, the best! the ladies are always so cheerful, and food comes out on time, no fuss, and tables cleared. We had a problem with a "stale glass of champagne" but when i returned it, we had no questions no dramas, just a new bottle opened and fresh glass poured, excellent! And for the solo diner, it can be hard but if you can snag a table in the public bar or near the beer garden you can keep to yourself, read the paper in the light provided and have a top time...bring on winter for this pub is cosey

Sliding, sliding.....gone. This used to be a real cracker. Great food, if a bit quirky, great service and a friendly greeting. New owners have dumbed it down. Food now awful, service poor, menu ordinary. New owners no-where to be seen. Staff however, try hard but are under resourced. We supported this business for 5 years. Its quite sad to see someone stuff up what was a great formula. We kept trying with the new owners, but have now given up. Sorry guys....
Sara
Ehhhhhh..... We waited a long time for the entree to come out, over 40 mins. Mains followed soon after but by all accounts were not good. My steak was burnt, tough and unpleasant. My friends pasta had one prominent flavour only, chilli. Whilst the bar staff were friendly and attentive, the food was a massive fail.

Service is really random. You might get service in a timely fashion, you might not get any service at all. Food is good but not worth the lottery of how long you might have to wait.

Awesome Staff and Delicious Tacos!. Staff are so lovely and make you feel at home. No request is too big or small and they make bloody great tacos. (only $4 too! bargain)

Keep up the good work!

Awful. All I can say is that Haskins has gone to the dogs. It used to be really good and reliable, when owned by a lovely Hungarian couple. But now the food is terrible. My mother and I couldn't even eat our meal(fish) and after complaining to the waitress who offered us a discount, there was no recompense. The chef apparently claimed it was all fresh but the problem was the taste . BLOODY AWFUL.
Definitely wont go back.
Adam Coleman
Disappointing. I used to come here quite regularly when it was run by a Hungarian couple a couple of years ago and had a simple menu with a middle European bent. Since then, the ownership has changed (perhaps more than once) and the standards have declined markedly.

At my latest visit, after waiting longer than I should have to be seated, my partner and I had what could only be described as an extremely ordinary meal. A shared starter of nachos lacked the tomatoey cheesiness one would have expected. It is not so much that there was no salsa or cheese, just not enough. My main followed, a 'seafood tagliatelle'. It was abysmal. It looked and tasted as if someone had emptied a bag of frozen marinara mix into some supermarket-grade tomato pasta sauce and left it there far too long before tossing the mix with tagliatelle and big chunks of free h raw tomatoes. Not good. My partner's schnitzel was OK, but that was all.

Very disappointing.
Lou
The best gnocchi I have ever had! It is usually hit and miss at other places but this was amazing.
Rick
Perfect pub. This is one of three great pubs in North Fitzroy, and we've visited maybe 50 times over the years. Bar is warm and friendly. Dining room enjoyable, with an open fire in winter. Never disappointed with our food choices (OK, maybe once, long ago) As an old Fitzroy FC supporter, I appreciate the memorabilia on display. One of those pubs you just keep coming back to.
Huge
Gone downhill since it changed hands. Totally gone to the dogs over the last year or so. complete menu change, it's like they have never eaten at a decent melbourne pub. totally below average food. removed guinness from the taps in favour of grolsch? overall vibe just not happening. used to love going there for the goulash. :(
Anje Serano
Not good and a little sad. sorry guys but it's lost it's charm and it's food quality. was great when run by a Slovenian couple until April 2011.

Went today for lunch, normally in the dining room or outside. Today first time sat in the bar area to be near the open fire and it was lovely. Service was absolutely fine, they where there when we needed them and gave us our space when needed as well. And as for the food, thought the various menus (bar and restaurant were available to us) tried to cater to various budgets. We shared the pork belly and scallop entree - yum! Followed by rack of lamb with a pumpkin rosti which was tasty and cooked to perfection from the restaurant menu. My co-diners went with the pub menu and found their meals fine if not as good as the lamb. Overall a lovely way to spend a wintry afternoon.
Love Pancakes
This place replaced our regular quizz pub and has ruined our weekly ritual. Inconsistent food (one week it's Turkish bread the next a McDonald's bun) and even for the special quizz price $16 doesn't get you much. Rubbish for a Melbourne pub, they need to get their act together.
Kevin Murphy
Loevd it - was wasnt was and is not again. Hi all
this place has been great at times - ok at times and now really missed the mark
Ordered Spatchcock which was just ok but was served on bed of chips with veg and broth over the chips??? What the...
beer glasses also the least clean Ive seen in years.
Plenty of other better pub restaurants in an area spoiled for choice - stick to beer in a stubby..
Franny
What a disappointment!. Haskins had changed hands since the last time we'd been there. Prices are gastropub, food is ordinary, but what really disappointed us was what happened when we told them the dish wasn't as described in the menu: no mushrooms or bocconcini, instead potatoes and ratatouille which weren't mentioned. The manager actually said to us, "I'm not saying you're lying" with the clear implication we were. It was unpleasant and we won't be back until it changes hands again.
Peter Haasz
Really gone downhill. Tough, tasteless, overpriced food. Still very nice staff though.
Wendy Brown
Lovely old setting with a warm feel and 10/10 for the service. The food I would rate 7/10, OK but not fantastic. I used a living social deal, which I probably wouldn't go back to pay full price however I only had tapas/entrees so I can't comment on the mains. Its a nice place for a Sunday arvo drink in the courtyard an that I will be back for.
Logie
Quiet night out. Went here last Thursday and enjoyed it so much we took our friends on Sunday. The food is delicious, the staff really friendly and the atmosphere relaxed-a real local feel about the place that reminded me of a country pub in the UK

Fawlty Towers at its best..... We've been going to Haskins quite regularly for over 12yrs and had always found it to be a rather pleasant way to get a good honest meal and drink without paying the earth. When we felt more 'up market' we'd treat ourselves to the dining room and was never disappointed. When Zorka and Volbi were trying to sell it, we'd even contemplated a career change ourselves. When the new owners came in, we tried it and found them struggling a bit (ie couldn't light the combustion heater without smoking the place out) but we thought they'd get the hang of it eventually. Tried it again today to introduce to friends and was bitterly, bitterly disappointed. We truly thought we were in a Fawlty Towers episode. Our party was 4 adults and 4 kids so we grabbed 2 tables for 4 out the back. As we reviewed the menu I could see that the prices had gone up noticeably since we'd been there. We ordered a jug of lemonade for the kids that turned out to be soda instead. My husband wanted the Kranskys so I thought is check that it was 2 but found out that 'Kranksky Sausages' on the menu is actually only 1 and not 2. They didn't appear to be terribly busy however the meals still seemed to take a while to appear. When they did the kids meals seemed to be coming out first even though we'd ordered by family rather than age group. I thought I'd better check that the chicken Parma was indeed the kids menu one with the waiter and he told me he didn't think they had a kids menu chicken parma when they actually do. So before I kids started eating it we gave it to the adult that had also ordered a chicken parma. Turns out one whole family's meals came and the other didn't. Once noticed we were told they'd make amends with a round of free drinks. The meals still took ages to come and the other family was completely finished before they arrived. My husband thought he'd been given the kids size chicken burger but he hadn't, my BLT ordered 3 times without tomato came with tomato but by then I was simply too hungry to care about any chance of a rash. When I had a quiet word with the owner about the myriad of errors he simply said he didn't know what to do. Luckily we do know what to do and sadly that is that we won't be back. There goes on of our favourite 'I'm too tired to cook' options that we'd enjoyed for so long. We miss you Zorka and Volbi!

The Haskins is well n truly a cut above your run of the mill Fitzroy Pub. In summary the service was as good as you'll find anywhere and the food was worthy of its 80+% approval rating. The standout dish of the night was the Chicken Ballontine which was nothing less than outstanding. The only minor glitch would be the bread, which could have been fresher, but overall a brilliant evening and very much looking forward to an encore in the foreseeable future

It's all about the Goulash!. Great local pub, with a great local feel. Make sure you get the restaurant's goulash, served in the baked break cob. Washed down with a pint of draught - of course. Delicious!

The Pubs Changed Owners. I have recently moved to the North Fitzroy area in the past 10 months and was told to try a few of the local pubs. Have been to a few however the North Fitzroy Arms stands out for me.

Must admit I went there a few times with friends and although pleasant with reasonable meals the place lacked atmosphere. I have been there a few times over recent months and believe there are some new owners running the pub now. Much younger than the previous owners and seem to have more get up and go. The past few times I have been in the pub seems to be much busier, good background music, the fire places running, even a little group placing music in the courtyard on a Sunday afternoon for a few hours.

Menu seems to have changed a little with some winter dishes, however some of the standard items still there. Can recommend the large serving of lamb shanks, the pork belly or the duck. The service seems to be better and more efficient also with some new wait staff who are very friendly.

Overall would reccomend the Fitzroy Arms as a good local pub. Nice to go somewhere that hasn't been modernised and feels like you are in a little country pub. Definatly worth a visit.
Michelle
A pleasant Thursday lunch!!. Just returned home from lunch at the Fitzroy Arms Hotel. We enjoyed a great meal served in a lovely old dining room with plenty of charm. The service was excellent, very friendly and welcoming. The food was of great quality and the menu offered plenty of choices. We could have also sampled the bar food but will have to go back another time to do this. We look forward to returning!!!
Happyhunger
Solid and reliable, the Arms cranks out an almost unbelievable range of good meals. Have only ever had one or two disappointments here in dozens of meals.

Gluten-free friendly status. I'm not sure why this is rated as gluten-free friendly. Basically I just went without gravy and chips because they're not gluten free. This is a great place to go, but it's not what I would call gluten-free friendly.

This dinner was so long ago that I barely remember the details; but I do know that we had a great time at the North Fitzroy Arms, which is a pub-slash-restaurant in, duh, North Fitzroy. Catch-ups with my school/uni friends don't happen as often as they sh
