Review La Madeleine - Norwood

Pouria Aryan
The decor, pastry, coffee and especially the famous croissant are so good and lovely. Beautiful spot in Norwood to stop by. I have been to this place multiple times and loved it every single time. The staff are very friendly and professional. Sourdough bread loafs are wonderful as well. Can't wait for another early morning treat here.

La Madeleine is my favourite!! The best place in Adelaide for coffee, cakes and pastries. The cake "pleasure" is my go to I've ordered one for so many occasions. Service is always super friendly and welcoming Add it to your lists as I highly recommend this place.

If you have ever read my reviews you will probably realise my 2 main food groups are coffee and pastry, and given that I have been in the bakery and FMCG industry for some 25 years I can comfortably say you will not find a better proper French croissant in all of Adelaide. The coffee is definitely worth trying too, you need to get in early to avoid disappointment but beyond that it’s definitely one of the parades best kept secret!

My first impression when I got into this place on a Monday morning is that the all-rounder person in charge was so busy that rushed everything gpr me to leave quick (there's no one else at that time with me). My coffee was barely warm because he rushed it. Costumer service was poor. And the croissant chocolate filling was not good.

I am a pastry chef , qualified from the French school Cordon Bleu. These are the best croissants in flavour and size you could find in Australia. We came to Adelaide for holidays from Canberra and couldn’t leave without having those croissants again, and again and again

The croissants were really good and the coffee was nice but the service is not the best. We ordered coffees and babycino. Our coffees came in time but not the babycino which we had ordered with the coffees. I asked twice about it and was told to wait. My child was crying through the whole time wanting his babycino which made the whole experience unpleasant. We finished our coffees and the croissants and as we are getting ready to leave I went in for the third time and asked for it, this time I was given a small cup of warm milk which is not what a babycino is. I understand that it was a busy time and only one person working but that shouldn’t mean that customers don’t get what they pay for. Also, a smile and an apology would have made a difference.

I had my friends baby shower high tea! Will was amazing and did an amazing job on the food!! I would definitely recommend this beautiful cafe!!

Lovely place for a Sunday brunch sitting outside watching the Parade traffic. Had a craving for quiche and there’s was good, even if it did have a kind of microwaved texture to the crust. Can imagine their take home full size would toast up perfectly in an oven. The coffee was nice. We ended up trying a pear tart to finish things off. Now that was stunning.

The first time I went there customer service was horrible. It was a busy morning but the waitress was told to clean the table instead of serving the long queue of customers. I had to wait for half an hour until I got told the cake I was after not available. So I just walked out and went to next door St. Louis. The second time preordered the pear tart to share with my friends the quality of the tart is just exceptional! Will definitely come back and try other food but properly will not dine it!

Service with a😀 robust coffee and addictive treats.

Worst customer service! The waitress was extremely unpleasant (she even rolled her eyes at me) - I asked if they had coconut milk and she laughed at me and said "um no". I will not be back

Food is nice, however the last 3 times I’ve been they have not been cooking with no notice of kitchen opening hours. I have found service to be very curt and dry. Could be more friendly in such a competitive area!

Nice to know there is a little French café nearby that I can just drop into, do I did. Just had a coffee and quiche Lorraine, coffee was nice and I have it black, so happy that it was not bitter. The quiche was okay, I thought it would be amazing coming from these guys, but was not. The pastry was good, the filling only had little slices of ham, chunky would have been better and speck would have been even more better! It came with a sad little leaf, I would have loved a more interesting bit of salad. The crepes menu looks nice enough, croissants looked good as well, so I would probably return to try some more French goodness! I did think the atmosphere was a little underwhelming and I would have loved to have been taken back to Paris with some French music! Cute place, worth a stop.

Be Warned......do NOT go to this cafe.....Savoury crepes arrived with completely uncooked eggs on the top. We asked if they could be put under the grill as none of us could eat them as they were.
When the waiter brought them back, they were only slightly better & we all had a couple of hesitant bites & left 95% uneaten. They were also a very unusual colour...hardly any ingredients on the top...very unappealing to look at. To add to the bad experience, they would not accept the Entertainment Book offer as it was the weekend. This does not comply to the rules of the Entertainment Book & I have since reported them. As we were leaving, there was a couple who had travelled from the country. They also wanted to use their voucher,& were also refused by the owner who was extremely rude & arrogant. Luckily for them, they chose not to eat there as they were so annoyed. Unfortunately for us, we had to pay for our lunch...$25 each for a crepe that we did not eat & a drink. These people do not deserve your custom. Go to one of the other many excellent eateries on The Parade.
Foodie Paradise
Both savoury and sweet crepes are delicious! The vegetarian baguette we ordered was quite nice too. Only downside was the quiche. Though the flavour was there, unfortunately the pastry was quiet soggy! They also have a good selection of fresh juice too! I would recommend their croissants and crepes - but you got to get there early for the croissants as they sell out pretty quickly! I was only able to try the raspberry and pistachio one! Would love to go back to the other flavours!

Have been here a couple of times and each time it gets worse. Staff here are very rude. The last time we went - and it will be the last - he actually laughed at my details when ordering coffee and hot chocolate. Yep, laughed out loud right in front of me. The only reason I didn't leave was I had promised my little one a lemon tart and we had one from here once before and it was very nice. After we had finished our drinks, and the staff had finished chatting amongst themselves, the lemon tart and other desert were delivered. No where near a good as previously, both items seemed stale, like they'd been sitting in the cabinet for a very long time. This was our last visit to this cafe.

We went for lunch today. We were seated at 12.30 and were asked if we were after drinks or lunch. We replied that we wanted both and were provided both menus. After chatting and catching up, we stated to peruse the menu. We had just decided on food when at 12.50 the waitress came over and explained that the chef had gone out to the supermarket and we couldn't order food. She said it would be 45 minutes till he came back. While this was annoying, we said we would order a drink and wait the 45 minutes as we really wanted crepes. The milkshakes were nice, no issues there. 45 minutes later and the chef wasn't back though. Another customer tried to order and the waitress said he wouldn't be back until another hour. The customer was clearly annoyed (though not aggressive) and left. The waitresses could be heard very loudly discussing this customers apparent rudeness.
We wasted most of our catch-up time waiting to order a lunch that was never going to be made. If only they had been honest from the beginning we would have just gone somewhere else!

Worst customer service I have ever experienced, this is no exaggeration I absolutely loathe this place. The French obviously don't know how to make a coffee.

It is a very nice dessert cafe to try on, they offer a variant bakery and pastry. Both presentation and taste are excellent. We do love our cake, delicious. And the L'atlantique baguette, smoke salmon and cheese, was superb. As for the coffee was average, not because of the coffee bean but the waitress skill. Service is good, friendly. The place is calm and cozy, good ambience.

Such a sweet little spot. The savoury crepes are a winner for breakfast, the coffee is very nice and the crossiants...particularly the pistachio/raspberry combo, have to be my favourite outside of France. I can never leave this place without paper bags full of goodies.

A lovely little spot for great coffee and tasty baked French treats. The service was quick and to the point. Lunch here is also delicious with some classic French favourites like vou-la-vents and French onion soup, but done really well.

La Madeleine serves many amazingly irresistible goodies. Some beautiful cakes are displayed, and other options can be found in their extensive menu. Among four ladies, we opted for savoury pancakes and different croissant options, savoury and sweet. Just delish! Their coffee is strong which I loved (not everyone around the table did, however).

A quaint and cute little cafe but food was a little underwhelming. Had the french baguette with pulled pork - baguette was dry and hard to chew on but pulled pork was generous. Would love to come back to try their other items on the menu.

Food was enjoyable but extremely overpriced for what it was. Ordered the crepes and it was quite small. The "caramalised banana" was just chopped up banana.
Came to about $40 for two coffees and two meals, and we were still quite hungry.
Food was above average, but really small serves for what you pay. Value for money just isn't there.

I can't say anything bad about this gorgeous spot on the parade. The lunch options are good, quiche is delicious. Their baked items and sweet treats are so tasty, you won't know what to choose. My favorite item is their pistachio and raspberry croissants, they are so delicious and so irresistible. They also now have a set up at Marion which is great for those who live in the West. It's only a small place so often it's tricky to get a table but stop in even if you want to take something home to enjoy later, you won't regret it.

I was after a sweet treat on a Friday night and this lovely cafe had lemon tarts - my favourite!

I must admit that my friend and I had tried Aviary across the road first, but moved on after seeing the line-up and being asked to wait inside a cold corridor. A few others followed suit, and we laughed when one guy yelled out to us, "This place is much better!" as he entered La Madeleine.

It was impressive to see that they open at 6am for breakfast, offer a fantastic range of savoury dishes right throughout the day, and now they've started trading for dessert/supper, too.

Everything we saw looked delicious. We'll be back very soon for breakfast or lunch.

Beautiful French food on The Parade. All of their desserts and pastries are delicious, creme brulee, chocolate and caramel tarts, fruit and almond tarts, lemon tarts and many more, it is too hard to pick a favourite. Pastry is short, crisp and we'll cooked. The savoury options include soups, baguettes, quiches. Their croissants are the best I have found in Adelaide, buttery, flaky and both the savoury and sweet options are winners. Great coffee and delicious hot chocolates. My favourite place in Norwood, a must visit

Au Matin Calme a cosy little French inspired cafe used to be located on Hutt Street in the CBD. They have since closed up shop and moved to The Parade renaming themselves La Madeleine. Located towards the end of The Parade I thought I would quickly pop in to warm up with a nice hot coffee and get...

Love La Madeleine's. We love the food, the coffee, the layout & the service. I like how they plate up, no nonsense & homely. No hipster vibes. Their French toast, the crepes & the raspberry & pistachio croissants are our favourite. Thank you & keep up the good work.
MissSarma
Cute little cafe away from the hustle and bustle of the main part of the parade. Amazing croissants and tarts. Recommend the pistachio croissant and pecan tart.

Out for breakfast with our regular Sunday breakfast friends we decided on an earlyish breakfast at La Madeleine (opens at 6am).

A delightful area away from the main dining area on The Parade with a few tables outside (photo attached) with comfortable seats.

We started with coffees which were very good but what I hated is that there is no running bill. As we like to order multiple items and enjoy our time talking between "courses" we ended up paying on four occasions.

The staff were friendly but they do not know their products. Questions kept being asked of the kitchen but was unacceptable were the answers, when asked what size the voulevant was the answer was "enough for one person", based on that we did not even bother to order one. On the counter was a hand written list of specials, I ordered one (onion and anchovy tart, photo attached) to be told that the anchovies had been substituted with blue cheese. Why not rewrite the specials?

Enough of the negatives.

The food was great a 9 out of 10. The croissants were extremely well made and full of flavour, I had a pistachio and raspberry croissant and Michele had a chocolate one.

I followed up with a ham and cheese omelet that came with a fresh little salad which was dressed beautifully. Added to this I ordered the special onion tart for us to share which was fantastic, the standout item from our breakfast.

In summary the food was 4.5 to 5.0 but the method of ordering and the lack of knowledge of the product brought it back to an overall 3.0, shame.

These guys used to be based on Hutt St in their Carpe Diem days. Their raspberry dark hit chocolate is to die for and the croissants are still just as good. Try their pistachio and raspberry croissant.

The coffee here is AMAZING. Croissants of course as they are French - equally so. New local for me. And I love the ambience. Staff very friendly. Only complaint, It says on a website they are ipen 6am-7pm, 7 days per week. Was looking forward to a repeat today (Sunday) and sad to see they were not there.

The place is adorable; it's nice and quaint, quiet even during the busy times, a nice little place to have a light lunch or cake & coffee catching up with a friend or on your own. Although not unpleasant, the staff aren't overly friendly or excitable so don't go in expecting exceptional service in that way, a welcome, a smile and guidance as to where menu's are wouldn't go a miss... The pastries all made on premises are magnificent

An extremely average version of what someone thinks a French cafe is. We had 4 'different' tarts that all tasted exactly the same- they all had almond frangipane as the filling- a very lazy way of filling a tart- funnily enough the almond croissant had no frangipane in it just a weird glaze on top. This cafe makes you realise how far Australia has to go in the patisserie department.

The previous place of au matin calme. I was so so disappointed when I know they close at hutt st. So glad it came back even with a different name. The tarts are still awesome. I still love the lemon tart - the base has his sensational buttery taste. It is not too hard and not too soft. It has a little beautiful outdoor sitting area. Menu constantly expanding, there's soup and French crepes (savoury and sweet). Coffee is fantastic. This is a superb place for brekky, brunch and catch up. Staffs are friendly and has French accent... Make me feel I'm actually at Paris. The only let down is probably they should have their shop's name sign up earlier.

Do you like to feel like you have an element of class? Do you ACTUALLY have that element of class? Then the gorgeous little La Madeleine is for you.

Located on the Parade, this gorgeous little french cafe has some of the best pastries, sweets and french lunches in Adelaide. All hand made, they offer a lovely menu of all day breakfasts, cakes, tarts, pies, quiches and croissants.

I have been here a few times for meetings & catch ups with friends around brunch time. Most recently I had the veggie omelette, which came with a side of ratatouille, salad & half a croissant. Flavours were amazing and the ratatouille especially was incredibly rich and lovely. The person I was with had French Toast with a sprinkle of almonds with a side of creme & banana, they LOVED it.

I have enjoyed take away Almond croissants and my absolute favourite, the pistachio and raspberry croissant.

However, it really does get quite busy, and they are vast running out of room in their small but new space! So always assume you may have to take- away.

The food is gorgeous. I hope you try it!

Had a lovely lunch at La Madeleine on a beautiful sunny today. Inside was bustling with people but not too small. Could actually see all the pastries being prepared on site which is such a fantastic asset to a patisserie. Split 2 baguettes with my sister, one smoked salmon & one egg/bacon/chilli jam. Nice heat in the chilli jam and cream cheese a nice unexpected counter. The smoked salmon was beautiful & fresh but could've used a bit of pickle/onion. All in all a great little spot.

Authentic French fare with charming French service ! Good value and located on the sunny side of the street with easy parking nearby . Good one guys !!

Good but....,. I have always been a fan of Au Matin Calme on Hutt St so when they reopened in Norwood I was excited. Today I went in for take away and bought 1 almond croissant and 1 pie. I was charged $10 for a single COLD pie (take away). The pie served in store (according to the menu) is served with a side of salad and I'm sure would have been served hot. If I'm buying it as take away, you cannot possibly charge me the same price and serve it to me COLD!! The service was also not up to scratch - there were about 4 ppl at front of house and it seemed chaotic and there was only 3 ppl waiting to be served. I'm writing this as a form of constructive criticism as I actually genuinely enjoy their pastries and I am in hope that their service improves and that they consider their take away menu pricing. We will just have to wait & see...
Michele
Delicious. Enjoyed a delicious chicken and veg pie served with a really tasty light salad. Can't wait to go back to try the French toast and almond croissants.

La Madeleine is a cosy little French cafe located towards the end of the Parade as you’re heading out of the city. Open 7 days a week, they have a small breakfast menu which includes quiches, pies, French toast, omelettes, crepes and salads. They also offer freshly baked items such as croissants, home made loaf bread as well as a selection of sweets.

La Madeleine is the name of a cafe located on The Parade in Norwood. The cafe is as beautiful as it sounds. It hasn't been opened for very long. The friendly waitress told me they are still waiting for the sign to be put up.
