Had amazing anniversary lunch here .Normally I don’t like kangaroo but this was so tender and delicious. I strongly recommend it. Everything else was so delicious too. Staff were very attentive and such a nice atmosphere. Check the menu well as they make little alterations based on the season it seems.the lunch and dinner Menu are the same which was Perfect. definitely go back soon.

We went here for dinner to celebrate a social occasion , and if I could give more than 5 stars I would! The welcoming was sincere, service was impeccable and personal. The food - was amazing! A great combinations of flavours that work very well together and a total experience from start to finish. Nice unexpected personal touch for dessert as well. Thank you to the Balthazar team for a great evening!

Amazing food and great service. Food came out quick and staff were very attentive. Love the ambience and lighting in the restaurant. We had the beef tartare, mushroom ricotta tart, kangaroo and artichoke risotto for mains and a side of baby carrots. Everything was cooked perfectly, kangaroo was so tender and it melted in the mouth. We were so full, we couldnt order dessert 😥 Will definitely come back whenever we're in Perth!

Absolutely everything was impeccable! And what was even most surprising was that the food, tasted even better than what it looked, AND it looked incredible! Service was outstanding, venue is beautiful, wine was excellent, so if your looking for something spectacular, look no further! I cannot wait to be spoilt again. Thank you team, keep up the amazing work.

Celebrated a special occasion here and it exceeded expectations and made the night one to remember. The kangaroo dish was amazing and a must try! A unique tasting dish filled with flavour which all went so well with everything on the plate. The fish of the day was impressive as well. Portion sizes were bigger than expected which was a nice surprise with impeccable service to match all night. In the booking notes the birthday was mentioned, and once dessert was ordered and arrived it came with a beautiful birthday message. A nice way to finish the night. Cannot recommend Balthazar enough for a special occasion, by far my favourite restaurant I’ve attended.

I'd like to start acknowledging the outstanding service of the staff! Well done! The wines were all amazing. The food was also very tasty, a bit on the oily side, but very well done. I definitely recommend it. Especially for a romantic night out.

What an amazing evening, we have long looked for a restaurant to compete with the wonderful options of Melbourne, I think we just found it. What amazing atmosphere, great customer service and a chef that you can taste that thy enjoy presenting great food. Thank you for making our evening extremely special, we look forward to returning,

A great experience overall. Atmosphere is nice but a little too dark for my liking, food is good but the portion is on the smaller side and the staff is very attentive and friendly! Though I feel that the price is a little too much for what you're getting but I would definitely visit again

Can not fault this place one bit one of the best meals we have ever had its a shame we had been before last the food was to die for and the staff we friendly and attentively. my partner had the main duck and i had the gnocchi. like i said best meal i have ever had cannot recommend this place high enough

So great to see a restaurant maintaining the type of service that is becoming so rare to find these days. Attentive and impressive staff! A memorable experience. Quality food with a fabulous wine list to complement. Would definitely recommend. One of Perth's best kept secrets! Would have tipped the staff if they had let me. Will be back. Thank you

Located on the ground floor of the historic sandstone Lawson Apartments- opposite Elizabeth Quay, Balthazar is one of those Perth dining institutions that is worth visiting. The dim lighting makes it feel cozy and intimate. The only discord was the music, some sort of Spanish country & western. The service was great - friendly, knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive. Maybe because it was a quiet Tuesday night but judging from other reviews it is more to do with the quality people they employ. My fiancé felt the Balthazar martini was simply amazing. The menu is relatively limited but changes regularly. I went with the scallops and black pudding followed by the fish with mango salsa, whilst my fiancé had the tasting plate and the trio of pork. The scallops were perfectly cooked but the black pudding was dry. The fish was light and the salsa refreshing but I should have had what my girlfriend ordered the flavours and taste were devine. Ask the staff for their recommendations as they really do understand the menu. We finished it off with a cheese player, complete with happy birthday wishes & a candle together with some desert wines. The staff understands the need to pair the right wines with your meal and allowed us to sample the different wines before selecting a glass - a perfect & unexpected touch. It maybe more expensive than other restaurants but the food & the service made me feel I got value for money. Highly recommended for a special night out.

As always Balthazar delivers. Amazing menu - the kingfish ceviche is to die for! Furthermore the wine list is full of interesting surprises and their sommelier seriously knows what he is doing. I can not recommend it enough to anyone looking for a special night out. It's actually good value too for fine dining. Go and enjoy!

Definitely in the upper echelon of Perth and Australian restaurants. Food was flawless and the wines (chosen by our server) for each course were on point. This place is killing it!!!
Lana Frlva
Amazing food, great service and good choice of wine. We definitely will recommend this place as 5 star!

Every time we've eaten (drank) here the experience has been impeccable. Last night was particularly incredible with our very knowledgeable waiter helping us select some wonderful choices (tall guy with glasses; lovely person, and very passionate about local produce, as are we). Just wonderful.

My wife and I are regular diners. The food, Wine list, staff and ambience are second to none in Perth. I highly recommend Balthazar

One of Perth’s best eats, always a favourite of mine from the food to the service and atmosphere it’s a total 5 Star in my eyes.
Geoff Appas
Top flight food, stunning wine and well informed and timely service. The parfait may indeed make you weep, because you have been missing out on 'meat butter' that good for your entire life, thus far.
Michelle Ranson
Beautiful creative menu and a really amazing 3 course lunch special with a glass of wine. Walked out happy and full.

Service was great, food was nice, but not for the price. I ordered oysters, and barramundi for main. I couldnt see my food, and there was no alternative (I did ask). I have been to a lot of fine dining restaurants with similar pricing, and found the overall experience to be better than this one unfortunately. The duck though was amazing, and I wish I would have ordered that and perhaps I would have had a better experience.

The staff was amazing. So friendly and welcoming. The food was INSANELY good! The wine list was very impressive. I'm completely blown away by this place. I absolutely LOVED IT! Can't wait to go back!

We have loved 'No Mafia' for casual dining and love Balthazar even more for a more romantic setting! Great service, fantastic food and awesome wine selection !
Melanie Ielpo
Absolutely wonderful food wine and staff. What a talented chef!!!

We enjoyed a delicious meal last night for Valentines. Every dish was simply delicious, however the stand out for me was the Burrata salad. My husband was also extremely happy with the beer selections. Service was amazing. Thank you

I had the most amazing meal at Balthazar Was worth every penny spent !!!

Amazing food and service. Hands down one of the best in Perth.

Everything is excellent. Not cheap but you’ll have the best experience of Perth’s fine dining. Best restaurant in the whole Western Australia!

You just don’t get much better than Balthazar in Perth. Having proudly eaten then over 10 times, I’m yet to have a bad experience. The food is obviously going to be a bit more than what you’d pay at you everyday restaurant but the quality of the produce and the excellent staff makes it all worthwhile.
Susannah McAlwey
We were there for over an hour before we had to flag down a waitress to take our order. The evening was fraught with very bad incompetent service. In the end it was laughable, for a bill of $710 for 4 people!! We won’t return despite the stunning, beautifully presented very tasty food. For a restaurant of that quality and price tags, it just can’t afford to either be understaffed or employ unexceptional waiters.

Balthazar offers delicious and inspiring food combinations & wines, in particular the entrees & desert. The use of porcini muchroom is a great surprise. Don't miss out.
Food Mania
This restaurant located in CBD but hard to find parking nearby. It takes us time to find secure parking nearby. It is a small romantic restaurant. <br/><br/>We ordered entree, starter and main course. Overall, the food is very fresh and tasty. The staff there are very friendly. Service is good.

It has been years since we last visited Balthazar’s. For an establishment to have a loyal following and maintain its quality speaks highly after such a long time. <br/><br/>Located on the corner of Sherwood Court and The Esplanade (opposite the Ritz and Elizabeth Quay), Balthazar is whatever you want it to be. A casual wine bar? Or a semi formal restaurant for a special occasion. <br/><br/>Service is amongst the best in Perth. Courteous, well trained and often checking in on whether you enjoyed your meal. Experienced waitstaff explain menu and wine list. You’ll pour your own water but that’s to be expected. <br/><br/>We thoroughly enjoyed the food! Quail was perfectly cooked. Tender, juicy and a hint of pink. The skin a delectable crisp to it. Paired with a luscious broth, cuttlefish and squid ink infused pearl barley. The beetroot and house made ricotta entree also clean, sweet if a bit simple. A refreshing Summer day start. <br/><br/>Whilst the beef appeared perfectly cooked and came out of the kitchen often, the rankin cod was fish of the day. Again, simply lightly salted and steamed. In a clear tomato oil consommé with a medley of deskinned heirloom tomatoes and basil allowing all the flavours to shine through without overpowering the fish. Lamb rump was fine, rich and flavoursome. <br/><br/>Dessert. Caramelised peaches with a hint of candied earthy porcini and vanilla ice cream? A light sorbet with lychee, ginger and mango? Check. Mango was a little overripe (and we would have preferred Kensington for the flavour) and perhaps a dash of mint. But that’s a preference, not a criticism. <br/><br/>Portion sizes here are reasonable without being overwhelming. <br/><br/>Add to that a well curated wine list (any restaurant that has By Farrs offerings know what they’re doing). <br/><br/>A thoroughly enjoyable 4.5 / 5 and glad we rediscovered a long lost gem.

Service was great. The room was a bit on the dark side. Friends said may be they are trying to hide all the dust on the wine racks :D the waitresses knew the menu. Personally I didn’t find the food spectacular but friends really enjoyed theirs. Presentation of the dishes were a lot better than what’s in my photos :P I’ve been to less expensive places for better food. But the building is so iconic that makes up for it :D beware parking is difficult.

It's been 10+ years since we first dined at Balthazar and it's still the same classy, dimly-lit and delicious restaurant that it always was. Food tonight was top notch. Menu was very gamey but we managed to find something to suit.<br/>Shared the chicken liver parfait with caramelized onion for entree, served with (not quite enough) toasted bread pieces. Probably one of the best of its kind that we've ever had.<br/>Mains were the braised goat pappardelle + market fish (crispy skinned snapper) with borlotti, clams and leek. Both were divine. Only complaint was the side serve of duck fat potatoes which were dry, overcooked and difficult to pierce with a fork. The dish was promptly removed from our table and our bill.<br/>For dessert, we ordered the doughnut on chia with cashew icecream, and the coconut panacotta which boasted Asian flavours that I found very light and refreshing after my main.<br/>All up we paid $156 and we'd do it again in a heartbeat because the quality of food and service at Balthazar remains excellent after all these years and puts a lot of newer cafes to shame.

Balthazar, located in Perth’s best Art Deco building, the Lawson Apartments, has, since being taken on by Emma and Dan from Northbridge bar, No Mafia, and with award winning young chef, Skye Faithfull, on board, become one of Perth’s best eating places – outstanding food along with a brilliant wine list, and excellent staff.

We decided on Balthazar for our 5 year Anniversary after wanting to try this place for a while. Out of all the dishes we tried, the Kingfish ceviche was the only thing with good flavour. Everything else was mediocre in taste which was disappointing as we were hoping for a food experience! And the gin cocktail, well it was by far THE WORST cocktail I’ve ever had, I couldn’t even drink it. And let’s not talk about the almost 3 hours we were there to receive 5 dishes and we didn’t even order a degustation! Wasn’t impressed with this place at all.

Place was busy on a Saturday night although I did like the dark and understated atmosphere. The food itself was good, but not good enough I felt to justify the prices. <br/><br/>We started with the bread in common, nothing unexpected there. We also tried the caramelized pork in witlof which was a too salty for my taste. It was almost like a San choy bow but overpriced.<br/><br/>Mains were the lamb gnocchi and pork cheek. The gnocchi was lovely, both in texture and in taste. The lamb was flavourful and tender. However the pork cheek was slightly underwhelming. There was no particular taste that stood out and the sauce that accompanied it did not add much to the taste. <br/><br/>The highlight was actually dessert. The donut was warm and the cashew ice cream and chia were perfect accompaniments to it. <br/><br/>Balthazar is a nice place for dinner, but at the prices they charge I have to say I was hoping for a little bit more... Either in quality or quantity.

3.6 rating <br/>An overall wonderful meal and it wasn't very expensive either for the quality. Service was slightly slow in the beginning but very polite and pleasant <br/><br/>For starters we had king fish ceviche , nice but small portion with very smooth avocado mousse.<br/>We had emu fillet which was my favourite, tender and flavourful. Chicken liver parfait with onion jam was a hit, we asked for normal house bread too but staff were mistaken and gave us extra serve of bread that comes with the parfait. <br/><br/>The rating would have been 4.2 above if it weren't for this dish we had - caramelized minced (duck? I can't remember) with persimmon on witlof. It was like swallowing a bucket of salt. On hindsight I really wish I took a small bite and sent it back to the kitchen (it was really, really, salty and I think someone spilt-salt-and-scooped-it-up-to-salvage-it type salty). All 4 of us jammed the whole thing in our mouths in unison as it was the first dish to arrive. We did provide that feedback to the waitress who was apologetic but since we ate it all, there was nothing else she could do. <br/><br/>For mains , we shared a lovely scotch fillet , duck fat potatoes, pork belly and yabby, duck breast with grains. Everything was really yummy (duck breast was cooked well done with no pink but it wasn't too dry). <br/><br/>We were too full for dessert but I shall return to dine here again.

I booked a table here on Saturday for my friend's birthday. Nice service but food were too bad. Steak was over cooked and chewy...and pork belly was too salted and chewy as well. I asked for a "Happy birthday" wrote on the dessert plate for my friend but when it came to the dessert I did not see those words..very angry and disappointed.

I came here for an anniversary dinner. My partner got steak and loved it. I got the fish special and it was so so, could've been better considering the price. The fit out is beautifully designed - elegant yet cosy feel to it. We got a lovely bottle of wine and the service was impeccable and incredibly helpful. It's worth another try, I may have just ordered the wrong thing.

Our friends had raved about Balthazar and we were looking forward to trying it. I absolutely cannot fault the wait staff - they were brilliant. The food however I'm not sure. Perhaps our expectations were too high. The oysters were okay. The marron was yum but the pasta with it had no flavour and I left most of it. Not sure if the price matches the quality of food here.

Had a gorgeous dinner here last night! <br/>The service is EXCEPTIONAL and the food is fabulous. My fish was quite dry unfortunately but the flavours made up for it. Just a great place with a great small menu and amazing wine list. There was nothing that couldn't be answered by the wait staff as they were just fabulous. It's quite an expensive night out but lovely and you certainly feel you get the value! Highly recommend and will definitely be back ...

My husband and I attended the 5 course Venetian degustation dinner here for New Years Eve. Service was impeccable, ambiance and setting sophisticated and warm and the food was outstanding. I'm so glad to have discovered this gem and will Definitely be returning for another elegant evening.
Some Like It Hot
The venue here is great, the lighting makes all the other table blend in the background. The service is also very good and the staff know the menu well. I had the scallops to start which were perfectly cooked but the black pudding lacked spice for me. The main was a trio of pork which was tasty. Desert included a delicious strawberry parfait. The main downside was the long wait for food. If they sort that out it would be a really great place.
Martin Davies
I love the food. And the wine list is great. Service is super. And I personally like the restrained understated decor. Though may not be to everyone's taste. Faults? Only the choice of music. A bit too doof-doof for a place which is all about food-food. And the price. Yes I know it's swish. And yes I know it's fancy. But does it really need to be this pricey? But I guess this is market forces in action. They do because they can. Fair enough. Glad I wasn't paying the bill is all I can say.

It was our first day at work in the Perth office, and we had a team lunch to kick off our collaborative effort. Amanda had booked us for Balthazar, an upscale restaurant at The Esplanade serving haute cuisine. We had a 3-course set meal, but the 2 starters were for sharing. The first was lightly salted Asparagus with Ricotta and Lupin Crisps. The second was Lamb Tartare with Duck Yolk and Harissa.
Raina Cheng
The food was weird, but weird good. We started off with a lamb tartare with a super viscous egg yolk, as well as an asparagus salad with ricotta cheese. Both were good. For mains, I got the pumpkin risotto with beet sour cream. It was really strange but it kinda grew on me. For dessert, I got the whiskey + valrohna chocolate ganache with salted caramel and strawberry cream. It was a great end.
Michael Thompson
i could have walked past this place so many times and never knew it existed until recently. Had some very nice dishes and enjoyed the atmosphere

Casual dining and wine bar? Yes, but so much more.  Skye Faithfull has to rank among Australia's foremost chefs. Creative, delicious dishes from entrees through to cheeses and deserts, very good range of wines presented by the glass as well as the bottle, delightful wait staff and atmosphere.  Visiting from Melbourne, we went in for a late Friday night snack and left after a memorable dinner.

Hearing there was a wine and cheese tasting at Balthazar at 5pm (my favourite time for a wine tasting), we jumped on the train and headed into town.  I can virtuously state, we never drink (nor text) and drive. Balthazar is situated in a lovely old building and you can enjoy a wine, snack or/and delicious meal.  Enoteca Sydney explained the background of their Italian wines – emphasising their natural wine making processes.
Hungryhenry
Saturday night meal. Cocktails to start and mine came with crunchy peanut brittle which was a bonus. Cripsy crust bread from bread in common but had to pay. Starter was scallops which are perfectly cooked also lamb tartare with duck yolk (first for me) which rich and tasty. For main I had venison which I always like and the better half had local snapper. The wine by the glass selection was good, I had three different reds. Also a note to the service which was great, especially compared to he place we went next for cheese and port.

I get down to Balthazar for work functions because it is close by. It is always smack on the money for the 'just right' place to eat, have a good variety, extensive wine menu and staff that are very friendly. This is a must experience. Chef always has great specials and top quality ingredients.
Tanya Evans
I absolutely adore this place. Service is impeccable - they don't hover and they don't lag, they know exactly what you need before even you realise. Really nice ambience, perfect date night place. The food is to die for. Had the barramundi and I could have licked the plate. We're what you'd call foodies and we maintain Balthazar is the best place we've ever eaten in Perth.
Minijodie
Had a really nice dinner here in January 2016. The menu is quite small but the dishes we tried were fantastic in their attention to detail and flavor. The service was attentive and polite. The wine list is incredible! We had a southern Italian red recommended by the sommelier. The prices are quite expensive and this is the only real negative. The experience is worth the money, but it moves it into a special occasion category restaurant for me.
Georgia Palladino
Yum! Balthazar is another must visit place in Perth. Excellent service and very attentive (my glass was never empty) I might suggest this place to be a special occasion , we spent about $750 for 4 people but that was including 2 very nice bottles of champagne (about $150 each).
Nikki.V
Partner and I had dinner here, the service was excellent (as you'd expect for a fine dining experience) and the food was well cooked, well presented and flavorful. The total price of our dinner (4 course for two, adding 1 side dish, 1 beer and 2 mocktails) was $224. I would recommend either having 4 courses, or 3 courses and 1-2 side dishes with the main if you want to leave full... (Portions are quite small)<br/><br/>The only thing I didn't like was the bathroom... Glass panels were poorly installed as cubicle dividers, there is a clear gap between wall and glass panel giving the occupant/occupantee a decent view of the toilet next door 😓
Glenda
Very attentive, friendly service, excellent food, sparkling water was free - a nice touch. Dim lighting, perfect for a romantic dinner. Extensive wine list.
Sinead Dunbar
Had a really lovely dinner here for my birthday a few weeks ago. Really enjoyed the atmosphere. The low lighting made it really cozy and romantic and we felt like the only two people in the restaurant. The food was all very, very good. Had three courses each and a bottle of wine to share. Every course had amazing flavours that just combined really well. The portion sizes were on the small size and pricey. This seems to happen with any "fine dining" restaurant but still felt it was a little steep. Still - a very enjoyable experience and would highly recommend. My partner had told the staff it was my birthday so my dessert came out with "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate. A nice touch I thought.
InMyFaceHole
Had dinner here about two years ago and everything was really good. Dinner for the four of us came to about $250 and that included some starters and drinks.
Perth Girl
This place has a beautiful ambiance, the service was great. We had an entree and main. I was in love with the celeriac soup with truffle. I then had the gnocchi and loved it too.
Gabby
Had not been here for a very very long time and I am happy to say it lived upto my expectations. <br/>We shared the Tuna and wagyu carpaccio for entree which was exquisite, but the duck breast and gnocchi for the main was out of this world!! The service was friendly and polite without being too obtrusive and the wines  chosen for us by the waiter was perfect with our food.<br/>Will be back for sure!
Rich Mackie
Absolutely the best food I have had in Perth. Service was impeccable.
Benjamin Ng
Service was pretty under par when we came here on a Friday evening for dinner. Pre-booked but had to wait mins for a table, drinks order were incorrectly taken. Food was good but with the underwhelming service it had ruined our night. Probably wouldn't come back unless there were some change or significant reason to do so.
Baristar
food was great here. I enjoyed he athmosphere in here. I didn't mind that it was a bit darker in here. It made it feel warm. Unfortunately we sat at the corner table where I got to watch the stressed out lady at the bar telling off her coworkers. they all looked so stressed which made me feel not welcome. our waiter was attentive and friendly though. I loved the gnocchi with the black cabbage and mushrooms. the highlight were the desserts. deconstructed cheesecake and a passionfruitmousse. so delicious!

This was my first time at Balthazar, and I was thoroughly impressed with my dining experience. The restaurant is very very dark, so I was a bit worried how my photos would turn out. But the ambience is perfect for any romantic occasion. I ordered the lamb ribs and the duck which were both excellent. The duck fat potatoes were also very tasty. The service was equally impressive. Unfortunately we were in a bit of a rush, so we did not stay for dessert. But I definitely would come back!
Laura
Good but nothing amazing. Went here last night, the restaurant itself is very nice and has a great feel to it and the staff are all very pleasant! However the food wasn't amazing... Bread didn't have enough of the "butter" it came with, entrees were so so small you were unable to really enjoy it, one bite and it was all gone... Mains we're tasty however my gnocchi didn't have any proper sauce, and the food in general was just lacking the excellent flavours I have found elsewhere.... Thumbs up in Perth goes to 'Divido' restaurant--- absolutely incredible food & service time and time again!
Andrew Moulds
Cliche but excellent food and excellent service. The lighting or lack of it makes for a intimate dining experience. As the wife says make sure you remember what your partner looks like. Good night
David K.
Good food for a Perth Restaurant. One of the best places to eat in Perth. I will always come back. The food was good and I prefer Balthazar over other fine dining venues such as C Restaurant. This is money well spent. Staff were very accommodating as you would expect from a restaurant such as this. In addition, the interior is well designed.

Loved it. Husband brought me here for a birthday dinner and it was lovely. Some of the flavors in the food were unusual but worked really well. It was a pretty quiet weeknight but we couldn't fault the service so hopefully it'll be the same when busier. Husband mentioned it was for a birthday when he booked and they surprised me at the end with a little chocolate bite, decorated with happy birthday in choc sauce on the plate, a candle and edible flowers, crumbled praline and various other beautiful additions. Husband hadn't asked them to do it so the restaurant did it all themselves. It was a complete surprise and very kind. <br/>Overall a fantastic night (even without the surprise at the end!) And we'll definitely be back.

Searched the city of Perth for the perfect restaurant to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. So glad we booked into Balthazar!! I had never dined here, so had some preconceptions on what to expect, but the reality was so so much better. Walking into the discreet entrance, we kicked off the night with a cheeky dirty martini at the bar. After being seated we felt like the only people in the restaurant (in a good way). It was intimate, the lighting very very dim, and the service exceptional. The unexpected surprise, the music. It's not something that usually stands out, but here it totally set the atmosphere for an extraordinary anniversary dinner. Oh, and the food... Wow! It was an experience in itself. Seriously, try Balthazar - now one of my top three establishments in Perth!

Duck Crepe – filled with Duck Meat. The crepe was thin and the filling was well marinated.

Wow!!. Had an intimate dinner here for 2. The service and ambience was perfect. The octopus with black pudding entree was to die for!! Thank you for an amazing evening. Will definitely return.

First time at this beautiful spot.. See why it's so special an amazing meal the beef fillet with potatoes and mushroom was perfectly done..

Delicious. On arrival I was impressed by the makeover which presents a significantly more clear and open space than the cluttered (but cosy) restaurant i remembered from two years ago. The vibe is lovely and romantic and despite other reviewers' opinions I appreciated the music and intimate lighting. <br/><br/>The food was spectacular. The tasting plate looked amazing I unfortunately couldn't eat as I'm pregnant (cured fish, parfait and goats cheese were the key items). My husband enjoyed the double portions though while I tucked into the fabulously warm bread. Incidentally the waiter did say the items were safe for pregnant women but I'm always erring on the side of caution being a little neurotic.<br/><br/>For main I had the pork which was succulent, beautifully cooked and complemented by one of the most delicious croquettes I have ever had. This dish was spectacular. I wiped my plate clean. That pork had a depth of flavour and texture that i have rarely tasted. The butcher supplying needs an award. The duck fat potatoes and cold veg salad were excellent accompaniments. The potatoes in particular need to be ordered. To not order them would be a disservice to yourself. My husband had the duck and he enjoyed it immensely. <br/><br/>For desert we both had the chocolate option and it was lovely and gooey and warm. Quite simply it was exactly what you would want to finish a meal of this calibre on.<br/><br/>I would recommend Balthazar again and again. It has to be one of the most consistent restaurants around.<br/><br/>The only thing i would recommend is a bit of work on the mocktail list. There has to be something more interesting for us non drinkers than the juices on offer.

Not perfect, but very good. With any fine dining restaurant you'll find that people are more drawn to point out the negatives, simply because fine dining comes with the expectation that everything is going to be more or less perfect. Because of this reviews can come across as being more negative than they're intended to be, so let me start by saying that we had a great evening and will come back/ recommend this place to others. <br/><br/>Areas for improvement were: <br/>- Kangaroo was a little overcooked - Was the medium side of medium-rare and needed to be rare. Meat was tough as a result. <br/>- Pork belly was good but not great - Crackle was a bit chewy, meat was not as soft and juicy as I've had at one or two other places. Good flavours though. <br/>- Beers on offer - I know this is a wine bar but they need some help with their beer selection. I don't expect a huge range, it's just that the beers they've chosen aren't very good and don't match the robust flavours of a number of dishes on the menu. <br/><br/>Highlights were: <br/>+ Beef fillet - The steak oh god the steak. My girlfriend ordered this and wipes a piece in the red wine sauce before passing it to me. "Good?" she asks. It just about melts in my mouth. After careful deliberation I decide that this is probably the best steak I have ever had. Enough said. <br/>+ Espresso martini - I have never had an espresso martini that even came close to this. The coffee flavour is on a different level. <br/>+ Raspberry jelly pops - I fiend for raspberries and these were fantastic both in flavour and texture. <br/>+ Palate cleanser - How can a palate cleanser be awesome you ask? Have you tried it? Clearly not if you're questioning this. <br/>+ Service - The place was packed and yet they handled it very well. Faultless.

Sad experience. On arrival (10 minutes early) our booking had been crossed out as another couple claimed to be us. The waitress snapped at her colleague in front of us and spoke to her in a very unprofessional and demeaning manner... sup..."if someone would give me five minutes and get off my back I can sort it out" we were then asked to wait at the bar for 5 minutes. <br/>Taken to our table which was in the booths aligning the wall after specifically requesting to be seated at an actual individual table for two when original booking was made (3 weeks prior). The booth side cushion kept uplifting each time I moved or another patron would move/ sit down, not too mention being squeezed between the rotating wine rack and another booth table. <br/>The waitress upon seating us asked us if we would like water - where we requested sparkling. Waited another 10 minutes until we could finally catch another waitresses eye where we then 'asked for water' and if we could order wine. The water was provided quickly, the wine however took a further 10 minutes. <br/>Attempting not to let it ruin the night, we had the beautiful tasting plate (thank you Chef, it was wonderful). <br/>On the arrival of our long awaited mains (no less than 45 minutes) my beef fillet was inedible (salty). Extremely over seasoned as was the potato gratin. I am not one to ever send food back but this was a big disappointment and waited for the collection of my meal as I didn't want to wait another 45 minutes for a replacement main. <br/>To the head waitresses credit she removed it from the bill. Unfortunately by this stage the string of events had left nothing but a bitter taste and a dampener on the evening. <br/>I held Balthazar in such high regard and am now sad to say I won't return nor will I recommend the restaurant. <br/><br/>Sorry team.

Lovely Dining Experience. My husband and I went here for dinner last night for my birthday. It was my first time and I was a bit concerned due to some negative reviews on this site but I was pleasantly surprised. The restaurant is very dark but it sets a nice romantic setting. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even though we did have to ask them a couple of times to refill our glass from the wine bottle, as the bottle was not kept near us. We both had the tasting plate for an entrée and shared the trout. The tasting plate was very well presented and two of the three tastings were very nice. And I am not usually a fan of trout but it was good. We both had the pork for main which was very good too. The food on the menu is not food I would normally eat so it was a pleasant experience to try and enjoy different tastes as the combinations are not what I am used to. They then surprised me with a small desert with candle for my birthday, complimentary. Very tasty and well presented. Extensive, and expensive wine list. I was concerned, as it was classified as fine dining, we would leave hungry due to small portions but we felt just right

Some improvements could be made. Service: impeccable<br/><br/>Entrees: tasting plate, delicious and very well presented <br/>Crab and watermelon, too overpriced at $22 for the portion <br/><br/>Mains: spatchcock was slightly dry but the rest of the elements on the plate complemented it very well. <br/><br/>Tagliatelle with clams: sauce was delicious but watery and overcooked the pasta. The clams were huge but had a slight bitterness to them<br/><br/>Dessert: choc caramel mini slice with salt and choc coated raspberry pop was delicious <br/><br/>Paid around $154 (only one glass of wine) and was expecting all elements to be perfect but glad we tried it.

Underwhelmed. Had dinner here last night. Service was impeccable - professional, friendly and informed. We started with half a dozen oysters each, excellent. I had the beef fillet medium rare - very average, not very tender and lacking flavour. (Not a patch on the fillet steak at The Squires Loft in Subiaco.) My wife had the duck - pretty good, very tender, good flavour but too much salt on everything. We also had the potatoes in duck fat - very nice. The raw salad was also good. We had a bottle of Ladbroke Grove 2005 which was very good value for money at $60. The bill was $213 and we came away feeling a little bit disappointed.

Nice work Balthazar. We went to Balthazar last week for a work function and we had a great night! <br/>Started off with some drinks and some oysters to share (knew they were fresh – you could still taste the salt water!) before ordering entrée’s. The trout was beautiful, the ribs were a popular favourite at our table (‘’this should be a main!’’) and the venison was superb.<br/><br/>For mains, the beef was melt in your mouth, snapper was beautiful and the duck also gets a special mention.<br/><br/>Staff were attentive and knowledgeable, with a few at our table commenting on the waitress explaining each dish as it came to the table.<br/><br/>A great night had by all and will definitely be back.<br/>A colleague of mine said it best as we were leaving... <br/><br/>‘’I knew it would be good. But not that good!’’

My first time at Balthazar was amazing! The food was outstanding - started with the beetroot with smoked goats curd which was delicious. I had the corn with beans and spring onion for main, which was interesting and well balanced and tasty, while my partner had the asparagus and egg and potato raviolo which was also exceptional. Dessert was a bergamot sorbet followed by a chocolate and cashew tart with a warm run caramel that was so so good. Only let down was the service which was friendly yet inattentive. I asked for a glass of wine and was prompted towards a Pinot Noir however was not informed that this was going to be $20 a glass. While it was a good wine a little warning would be nice as that is quite pricey.

Cynical attempt for more money. Last night I went to Balthazar with a group of ten. We had booked a table well in advance, but when we arrived were told there was no booking under our name. Conveniently, they had space for ten in the entry foyer, metres from the front door and toilets. On a Friday night we had no other options, and reluctantly agreed to their arrangement. <br/><br/>The food and drinks were fine (as always - I have been there with smaller groups before), but it became obvious that they were just cramming in as many people as possible, and the poor attempt to convince us that the booking was not recorded was transparent. We were charged at full price and we never received an apology for their failure to book a proper table for a night that all members of the group had been looking forward to for well over a month. <br/><br/>I would be interested to hear if other people have had this experience at Balthazar.

Rob P Likes it! Baltha.... Rob P<br/><br/>Likes it!<br/><br/>Balthazar is back. Went there 2 times recently. Fabulous tasting food. Things have improved in the kitchen markedly. The vegetarian friendly offerings delighted even meat eaters like me so much I went back for the asparagus and egg yolk raviolo. Superb! Lighting much improved maintaining intimacy but enough to enable one to read the menu and observe presentation ( a real problem until recently). Balthazar is back on my dining radar!

Big let down. Were to start yes the do have a great wine selection but so does dan murphys at a lot less cost. Needs better seating and a bigger choice on the menu which is mainly fish. Tables very close together and very warm. Also foid was only luke warm . People there enjoying them selfs but we won't be going back. I would recommend Optus

Terrible. This restaurant should not be referred to as fine dining. The food is very interesting but the poor service is a big let down. No one seemed to care that we were seated 1 hr late which may be more of an issue when you book for 9pm as we did. It did seem that some of the waiters were very talented but not ours. I would need to read consistent rave reviews to ever consider going back. This could be a fine dining restaurant if they could improve there service. Go to any of the wonderful restaurants at crown, Nobu, Rockpool, bistro Gillume or Mondo Mio they consistently offer wonderful service. Very disappointing but now I understand the mix of good and bad reviews.

Beautiful Food. Went here Tuesday night, it has a huge wine list as you would expect the majority are out of my price range but still managed to find a nice drop.<br/><br/>It is a dark setting with an individual spotlights for each table creating a very intimate feel. It wasn't overly loud other than a group of office workers who probably hadn't stopped drinking after the Melbourne cup, the staff cleverly sat them in the front near the bar separate from the rest of the diners.<br/><br/>Had the Scallops for entree followed by the Duck breast and a coffee, both dishes were beautiful in everyway you want them to be; flavour, texture and presentation.<br/><br/>Coffee was also nice, not a cheap experience but definitely worth a splash every so often.

We went in a big group for a birthday dinner. Although we were a bit late, they still seated us in the private room towards the back. The service was absolutely incredible, our waiter was full of knowledge in regards to the food menu and when we asked about the drinks, instead of replying with a guess he redirected the question to a senior bar staff who would have a better knowledge of the drinks menu. The waiter was very friendly and even added an extra seating for us when we had friend arrive mid way. <br/>The food was amazing! Highly recommend the lamb rack and duck fat potatoes for starters. Although the mains took a bit long, it was worth the wait! Recommend Beed fillet, Duck Breast and the Seared Fish! <br/><br/>Overall a very memorable experience and will definitely be back!

Always fabulous. Balthazar is my absolute favourite Perth restaurant. The food is always contemporary, interesting, and perfectly prepared, the service is outstanding, and the winelist is something else! I have never been disappointed here (which is something for Perth). And while not cheap, this restaurant offers exceptionally good value for money.

Ultimately it comes down to taste!. It was very expensive which I wouldn't have minded if the price matched the taste of the food. <br/><br/>My entrée was nice. However the mains were a let down. My partner had a piece of snapper which tasted ordinary for $47!! And my main of pasta...my italian mother could do better. Sorry guys, for the price and reputation I was sadly disappointed.
Sharky
OK.... The food is interesting, but sometimes I don't think the chefs taste their food before it's served.

Wasn't bad but wasn't great.. We called late so we did get a terrible table that was right in the front next to the door - so partly our own blame there. I think ambiance is a big thing when it comes to eating out at a nice restaurant - and I can say that they have their music to loud, to the point where it was semi difficult to hear the person across the table from you. We did ask if they could please turn it down a little, and they sort of nodded.. but it never happened.<br/><br/>Food was average - it was edible by all means, but it just wasn't great either.<br/><br/>Not somewhere I would return, personally.

Disappointing piece of meat for main course. I had been to Balthazar in the past so had high expectations. Unfortunately it was by far the toughest piece of pork I have ever encountered. Service was slow and I had a limited time for lunch otherwise I would have had a discussion with the management. Would have to think twice before going back to Balthazar now.
BecBoo
Not the full package.. I was a touch disappointed at the entrees but the pork loin main was fantastic. It would have been better if the knife was able to cut through the meat. I wasn't the only one with cutlery troubles either. The ladies needed a clean too. There was grime all around the sink plus the door handle was falling off. Luckily the wine list was good!

Had lunch there today. Fabulous food. Very attentive knowledgable waitstaff. Great ambiance. Will go again.

Dessert to die for. I love this place. Maybe it's up there with one of my favourite restaurants. Went to Balthazar last night for the first time and it didn't disappoint. We struggled to find the place as there is no obvious signage (the building said 'lawson' and if you look closely there are flags, white on white, which say Balthazar.. and of course the name is on the doorstep) we definitely had to take out google maps. Apart from that, everything about the restaurant was amazing. The staff were very friendly and the food was creative and soooo delish :) for entrée i ordered candied apple with blue cheese and apple smoke - ahhhh was sooo good!!! they were like mini apples filled with blue cheese encrusted in a candy, sitting on top of pureed apple.. with apple smoke as they lifted the lid. My main was the snapper which was perfectly cooked, best snapper I have had. For dessert i had the chocolate, caramel and sugar thing.. I'm not sure what it was, the menu was very vague.. but whatever came out was so friggin amazing words cannot describe how phenomenal it was!!! the base was some sort of soft chocolate biscuit, with mousse the next layer, then a layer of soft caramel and a layer of chocolate on top, then the hot sugar was poured in the middle and it melted a hole in it, it was soft, warm and was the best dessert i have ever had! I can't wait to go back!
Lets Eat Out
Excellent Once Again. This will be the 5th time that I have been to dine here and it has not let me done yet. The service from the second you walk in the door cannot be faulted with a friendly greeting and being sat at our table within seconds. The food once again was out of this world along with the wine recommended to us by our waitress. I cant recommend this place enough and hope that everyone gives it a try.

Excellent experience at Balthazar. Had dinner here on a Saturday night recently - first time I'd eaten here and it was a wonderful experience. Excellent service, good atmosphere, many options on the wine list and the food was wonderful - incredible flavours and presentation really topped it off. Yes, it is expensive but worth it for a night out to remember.

I decided to try this restaurant last friday night, it is pricey but really well worth it!! The wine list is unbelieveable and a great atmosphere is created inside the restaurant. I have to say that the quality of food is the best i have had anywhere in perth. Fine dining at its very best i must say. The attention to detail on the plates is second to none and the menu offers dishes that just dont exist in other restaurants. This reataurant boasts a chef that has to take real pride in his work because every dish was flawless. I shall be going back again thats for sure!! Top quality advertisement for the city. 5 stars from me anyway well done balthazar.

Business. I've been here for a few business lunches and dinners and have always been impressed. The food is delicious and the services is top notch.

Ok but nothing special.. Maybe I was expecting to much... Uuummm no... It fine dining after all, and you do pay for it ... So my expectations were high. There is nothing to dislike about the place. Food was ok, service was ok, ambience was ok, overall experience was ok.

Dinner @ Balthazar. The service was fantastic and the food was delicious, definitely would recommend Balthazar to everyone! Amazing was so happy with everything!<br/><br/>Would recommend the duck for main & chocolate caramel for dessert.. Delicious!

An absolute delight. It's been a couple months since I've been down here and definitely should have written something up the next day.<br/><br/>The food is fantastic, the service is great and the feel is just right. We went down for late valentine's day dinner and decided on a whim to throw together a make shift dego, ordering a few entrees, a couple mains and 2 desserts. <br/><br/>I do generally struggle with specifics (so I couldn't tell you for the life of me exactly what we ordered), I can tell you that not only did the waiter spot what we were doing, he encouraged it and helped us pick the right wines to pair with our choices and helped put it all together.<br/><br/>In short, get down here and if you can afford it, get down here often.

Why don't they have a website?

Went here with my boyfriend on a date. It was a really lovely evening. Our waiter (a French man) was amazing. He gave us great service and was always there when we needed him. The cocktails were great too! Food was amazing, especially the lamb ribs. Such a great restaurant.

Yes yes yes!. This restaurant has one of the best services. Although the food is overpriced it is very delicious and you get what you pay for. Amazing service EVERY TIME and very professional.

Called to make a booking on a weekday at 3pm. Waited 5 minutes on hold. Then called back and made a booking then to arrive and be told the booking hadn't been written down. AVERAGE service to say the least. Food was ok. Desert was the only amazing part. Way over priced for what it offers don't mind paying good money but deliver great service and food!

Impeccable service BUT..... My hubby and I have always wanted to try Balthazar so went there for lunch on Valentine's Day. The restaurant in on the Esplanade so we had to park in the nearest carpark which was hugely expensive. The restaurant was not as dark as I had anticipated but perhaps this was because it was daytime and some light could stream in. The waiter who served us was French and very delightful, attentive and polite. I had a Bellini to drink and ordered the snapper whilst my husband had beef sirloin and a beer. The bread was nice but a bit too rubbery. I like bread that is soft but not hard to bite off. The butter was a bit on the hard side but nonetheless tasty. My snapper was perfectly cooked and I enjoyed it. My husband's beef sirloin was also tender and medium rare (although this is the way he likes it, he didn't recall being asked how he wanted it prepared). Unfortunately the choice of vegies to accompany the mains only served a decorative purpose. The roasted raddiccio was too bitter and the broccolini was too little. My fish sat on a bed of some sort of tomato puree (I am not a big fan of anything tomato) and there was some olives and string beans. As expected I had a taste but did not delved into the vegies with the same enthusiasm as I did the fish. It was worth trying but did not make it to my top 5 fave fine places to dine. Another thing that I should mention is that there was a strange funky sour smell in the restaurant which may have been from the wine/cellar.

For a special night out. Balthazar's is a great option for a treat night out, the beverages and food are more pricey then similar restaurants in the CBD. However, based on recent experiences there it is worth it. The quality and atmosphere is what you are paying for. Our dishes were beautifully presented and exquisite in taste. We had a great night there and really enjoyed ourselves.

Awesome...our favorite

Always delightful , food is always good , service fantastic and never have I had any issues with catering to a nut allergy, no traces in any of my dishes I've had in my many visits - a truly special find.

Food was great. Servings small. Service reasonable. Music way too loud and inappropriate. Ambiance poor. Maître d condescending. Overall bad value for money
The Napoli Alert
Great food and great (but expensive) wine. Really enjoyed my meal here. My entree of pork shoulder with cabbage and consomme was outstanding, melt in the mouth pork. This was followed by duck with beetroot with blue cheese and candied walnuts - was a combination that worked well and beautifully presented. The deserts, while attractive, were not as stellar as the savoury dishes. Great wine list but very pricey - not many choices under $100 per bottle. Pleasant environment and friendly staff.

I have never written a review and have seen the reviews lately of Balthazar and still gave it a go. However all I can say is Confused!!!!! It used to be one of our favorites however going there tonight was not the same.<br/>What used to be a amazing restaurant was completely confusing.<br/>Amazing bread and.churned butter to start followed by Asian dishes, followed by over cooked French dishes!!! Too many cuisines in the one place.<br/>Really bad coffee and would never recommend.<br/>What happened to good old Balthazar?!?!?

Slightly inconspicuous doorway hides a hidden Perth treasure. Walking in off a barren street into what seemed like a snobby wine den we soon realised, this place was humming! Greeted warmly at the door we choose to have a drink in the bar area. I enjoyed a martini and my wife had a lychee drink which was apparently gobsmacking(?). Once at our table we shared things like prawns, pork cheek! and lamb prosciutto all were fantastic. But. The duck and the beef, which we shared..speechless.. Best meals in a long time, if ever. Washed down with a couple of glasses of French sav blanc and a bottle of Margret River cab sav, perfect way to spend a night. Apparently it's a secret..but you should tell you friends.

Best meal I've had in Perth. I visited Balthazar on Saturday night with my girlfriend and thought it was fantastic,<br/><br/>The place has a great cosy/romantic atmosphere and the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was the best I've eaten in Perth and was beautifully presented. I had the beef and my partner had the soft shelled crab. The duck fat roasted potato's were delicious and I highly recommend them.<br/><br/>I washed the meal down with an old fashioned and that was also fantastic.<br/><br/>We'll be back.

Lovely group lunch. A group of us spent most of the Friday afternoon having lunch at Balthazar in the city. Loved that we were not pushed out the door for spending a few hours dining.<br/><br/>Service was fantastic, very attentive and professional. The small restaurant was packed mostly with corporate diners. <br/><br/>One of the best fine dining restaurants I have been to. The dishes appear small but a 3 course meal is completely satisfying. <br/><br/>My main course of the duck breast was $47.00 was divine - beetroot, walnuts, mushrooms and blue cheese. Food presentation appears to be a focus and so is the extensive wine list.<br/><br/>Flavours and textures, definitely an experience at Balthazar.
World Diner
Business Dinner. Having made a lunchtime decision to try Balthazar for dinner we were able to secure a 7.30 booking for 7 people. I have been here before and it was good then, as it was last night. My only issue was that the wait staff were quick to take our drinks order, but slow (30 minutes later) to take our food order. I had just a main: Duck with beetroot, mushroom, walnut and blue cheese sauce. It was excellent. The others had entree and main, and not one complained (which is unusual for this bunch) about anything that was ordered. The lamb ribs were "to die for"; the Swordfish, cauliflower, polenta, corn, crispy chicken skin "excellent". It is not often that we get a group of 7 and someone is not disappointed with their order. There was even some sharing of these excellent dishes - not something you expect from 7 men. I agree with critics that Balthazar is one of the best in Perth CBD.

No longer my favourite restaurant. How sad, I was so looking forward to dinner at Balthazar as it has been one of my favourite restaurants for a long time.<br/>The service was average, the food was extremely unappealing .<br/>What's waste of time and money !<br/>I won't go again when there are so many other great restaurants in Perth.
