Review Galangal - Perth

Behram Cooper
To our surprise, this restaurant turned out to be quite good. There was a bit of a delay between ordering and service, but one does need some time to sit back and soak in the delicate ambiance. And when the food finally came to the rather small sized table (for two), it did not disappoint. Every dish was quite tasty and satisfying. Serves were reasonable and service was up to scratch. On a Sunday, there is ample parking on the road side and in the free parking lot exactly opposite to the restaurant. This restaurant is a participant of the Entertainment book. Definitely worth visiting again.

What a fab time we had and the food just got better with each dish. Really liked the service, as they were unobtrusive and very quick. I have eaten a lot of Thai cuisine and this is really really delicious authentic dining probably the best in Perth. I will be back!

Nice restaurant a bit loud and pricey but the food was nice, all very rich and tasty. We had a table of 6. I would revisit for these dishes; entree chicken coconut soup, money bags, soft shell crab, pork belly, roast duck curry and green curry.

Amazing food! It is hidden gem in Mt Hawthorn. You can expect good service from Richard and his staff. Authentic mango and sticky rice dessert, its a must!

Food is very delicious, service is lovely too. It's a bit expensive for Thai food but it's good to go there for a special occasion. We love the coconut ice cream sticky rice so much.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in Perth. The vibe is relaxed witha hint of formality so we tend to dress smart casual when we eat here which is generally for special occasions. I can recommend the Galloping Horses entree if you're after something different and the garlic and pepper tiger prawns stir fry is fantastic. Highly recommended

Yum, Yum, Yum! The food here is fantastic and the team are fantastic. Real Thai food cooked by people who know-how. If I could give you 6 stars I would, just awesome!

We ordered on uber eats, the food was delicious, but over packaged in 3 layers of plastic... not really good enough in 2019.

Amazing amazing food, Would have to be my fav Thai in Perth at the moment, The garlic pepper scotch fillet beef is to die for... Would have to add that the serves are quite small, I don't think it would be good for a group sharing meals

Our booking was for a Saturday evening ........Fabulous food đŸ„˜...... excellent service from very pleasant staff and great ambiance around with people chatting and enjoying the experience ........ have booked to go again

I ordered a big mix of dishes for delivery to our office from Galangal for a work dinner last week. The service was brilliant throughout the two week lead up in liaising with the owner, recommendations for meals and delivery right on time for our meeting. If seeing how fast the food was eaten and watching everyone enjoy every dish is anything to go by, Galangal certainly delivered on beautiful food! I know that for my own dish (Chilli Pork) I could not have loved every mouthful more!! There are many options for those with special dietary requirements. The feedback from everyone has been fantastic. Thank you Galangal, I very much look forward to dining in your restaurant soon :)

The food in Galangal is not cheap. But it’s ok The service is pretty good but nothing to write home about, , the place is usually quite busy, but there are many much better restaurants at much better prices in Perth. Chilli Orange is way better and Red Opium is much much more fun and cheaper We had 3 starters and 5 mains between 6 people, the portion sizes were ok, average I guess, But the biggest problem with Galangal is when we had finished an “ok” small but quite bland meal and spent $220 between 6 (3 couples) we couldn’t split the meal per family. A MAXIMUM OF 2 CREDIT CARDS between 6 of us. It’s a matter of principal. Even Galangal accept that splitting bills is now standard practice, but GALANGAL said that they were charged more by the credit card company for each card. We suggested that was bull and they paid the same percentage as we all were giving visa And the cashier just repeated the bull and said “Company policy is 2 cards only because of the bank charges” I said, ok, “because of the bank charges we will go to another better restaurant who don’t make up silly rules and who are aware that the consumer has a choice “ and I said I would tell my friends what happens so they can each order on their own and pay on their own. Seriously Galangal- the fastest way to lose loyal customers is to drive them to better restaurants. Your food is ok, your service is ok, your prices are not cheap but at the top end of “OK”. But don’t treat customers as idiots or you will end up with 6 people at one table ordering for themselves and then producing 6 different invoices and taking 6 credit cards and creating work for yourself.

Dined here for the first time on Friday night and we had a fabulous experience!! Despite how busy it was, the service was great. The food was sensational ïżœ We will be back for sure.

Been a few times and love the food and great service

Yummy!

The food here is absolutely amazing! This place serves some of the best Thai food in Perth. Would recommend coming here for a special occasion.

Went here for dinner last night. Used to be an amazing restaurant but obviously new owners. Everything was terrible. The waitresses wearing tracksuits, the tacky decor, incorrect entre brought to us, and when it was just tasted reheated & greasy, we had to wait ages for wine glasses, beef rendang was less than average and pad thai was awful, overcooked and gluggy.<br/>The man running around waitering seemed vague and unfriendly and even gave us a bowl of used chilli sauce from another table which we thought was strange. So disappointing as this used to be such an amazing restaurant.

Great food. Prompt friendly service. Recommended<br/>

The mixed entrees were a mixed bag - delicious fish cakes and curry puffs but average spring rolls and money bags. The chicken pad Thai was dry and lacking flavour. Very disappointing after such good reviews. Not worth the premium price.

There are many Thai restaurants to choose from. I've been to most of them, here and many in Thailand. Having been to Galangal years ago, thought we would give it a go and support the local businesses by eating some delicious Thai food. I'm afraid that in my opinion and experience, the food was pretty bog standard, some was OK. I think the steamed rice was the most fragrant dish. The beef in the stir fry was tough and the broccoli raw,(I love crispy broccoli). The menus were in pieces we were told to "use our brains" and swap menus as none were the same and we had to work out what was on offer.<br/>If you could get the attention of the wait staff they were friendly enough, if clearly inexperienced. <br/>Very noisy and tables were crammed in, so it's cheek by jowl.<br/>So close I had someone from another table bang his bum in my face as he got up to leave.(Perhaps I'm wrong but I thought we were still distancing by 2m.)<br/>So, average food at higher than average prices, inexperienced staff, noisy and packed in. Not for me but maybe for you.<br/>

So disappointing! After spending $60+ on a massaman curry, stir fry vege & rice it tasted reheated & tasteless! :(
Amy Tay
The food was terrible. Pad Thai was the worst dish that i've ever had in my life. Green Curry was disgusting 😹😹. Avoid this place!!!

tldr; Don't even bother going here, you are literally better off starving.<br/><br/>On the 3/5/20, I received a text message from Galangal offering a promotional 'Mother's Day Banquet'. This offer consisted of entrees, a selection of mains, and rice with the inclusion of delivery within the metro area. <br/><br/>I placed an order for 7pm on Mother's Day (10/5) on the 6/5/20 by responding to the text message as instructed from the offer. Shortly after, I was contacted by a staff member who organized payment and delivery through the phone. During this process, I was reassured that a message would be sent after the food had left the restaurant. <br/><br/>Fast forward to Sunday evening, at 7pm there was no food in sight and no delivery text. I was willing to be patient as I understand that there must have been a huge number of orders given the occasion. By 730pm, I had begun to follow up the order further as I was afraid my order had been potentially forgotten or perhaps an incorrect address may have been taken down. I tried calling the restaurant and the promotional number several times with no success. At this point, I was unsure of whether or not I might have been played into a scam. Furthermore, my family was hungry, and my Mother's day plans dinner had essentially been ruined. After another hour of unanswered phone calls and text messages, I finally received a phone call from an unknown number. Upon answering, I was met with a rushed delivery driver who seemed to think introducing himself with 'I have your food' would have made the situation better. Mind you, this was already 8:46pm and by now, I was beginning to lose my patience and had not received an apology or any information about my late order. <br/><br/>But to make matters worst, the food was not up to my expectations, of which were based on my previous dining experiences at the restaurant. The pad thai was oily, and missing core ingredients such as peanuts and green onions, additionally the chicken pieces were small and tasted substandard. The fish cakes tasted cheap and defrosted without much flavor. The curry bases all tasted like instant powder mixes which were disappointing, to say the least. But to top off the whole thing, the rice was undercooked and all the dishes were lukewarm at best. This was a ridiculous experience overall for a whopping $97, the new management team are clowns if they think running a business in this manner will be in any way beneficial for them. I wish I had read the most recent reviews regarding the new management not paying staff wages and the depreciation of sanitization within the kitchen prior to making my order, these would have been immediate red flags.<br/><br/>Unless the management undergoes a miraculous change of business practice - which I highly doubt given the recent reviews, I would like to advise anyone to keep a 10-foot pole distance unless you would like to ruin your dinner plans. I guess on the bright side, I truly had an unforgettable Mother's day experience so I do have them to thank for that.
David K
Pretending to be a generous man by giving away free meals to community, but not pay wages to staff. That's totally terrible.
Karina Pinkerton
I was working in this place in February for some time and never got paid. The owner was running around customers, having a chat and making friends; I just wish he was as friendly with his employees too (or actually if he just paid them it would have been enough:) I was back in the kitchen packing Uber eats orders and I just thought to myself: I would NEVER order takeaway from this place. It didn't feel clean, no basic sanitary rules were followed there. I feel sorry for the staff who is working there in such an unhealthy environment (both mentally and physically). I would put 0 star for such a poor and dodgy management, but I can't.

Galangal restaurant had been a dine in and Thai take away favourite for many years. However, ever since the old owners have departed, the new owner has taken this place south in a big way.Galangal is now really disappointing on both food quality and service. The quality has dropped dramatically together with a significant increase in price!Their dishes taste old and curries have simply been reheated. Spring rolls were swimming in oil and cold inside. Fish cakes were disgusting. Papaya salad just tasted of chilli. Barramundi smelled foul, not fresh at all. Pork belly was ok taste wise, but was tough. After another disappointing order recently (where we didn’t receive the right dishes), we will not be ordering again from this restaurant! We also recently overheard that the new owner isn’t paying wages to staff. Forget the current environment, is this really ethical at any time? Staff work hard, so please treat them fairly!

*** AVOID THIS RESTAURANT! ***<br/><br/>I fell sick after ordering take out from Galangal. The restaurant quality has gone down to before, and become more expensive. The food was smelling bad and not fresh, I should not have ordered from here. Avoid this place. Total rip off.
Dan B
Very bad experience. Food & service has gone down majorly. Used to be a fine place, but new owner has totally ruined this place. Chatting to the staff, the new owner doesn't pay wages, very very sad in the current time.
Steve Richards
Me and my wife felt both very sick after having Massaman Curry in this place. It's a shame, because the place wasn't that bad, they have to be more proactive and observe quality control.
Michael Broeke
I found the cuisine to be underwhelming. Thai food is generally bursting with flavor and the the flavors are well balanced. Our experience was leaning towards heavy, greasy, salty. This to me reflected more a western style rather than a traditional Thai style.
Kirby O’Keffe
very greasy food. thai food should not be that greasy. overpriced as well.

I was at the Galangal restaurant for Valentine’s Day as we have visited them a few times previously. And have had a decent experience before. We arrived and ordered drinks and food. It took several minutes before the staff could get the drinks order right. The staff seemed rushed, extremely anxious and nervous, frantically darting around the seats that were crammed to take in couples who weren't there. Initial drinks order took ages to arrive, food was decent, but the coffee was forgotten though ordered. The ice cream dessert was poorly presented and tasted straight out of a supermarket trolley. It was quite chaotic and noisy and made it impossible for anyone to relax. At the till we informed the staff we didn’t receive the ordered coffee which she then promptly removed from the bill. As we had ordered quite a few items, we had to resort to taking away one of the mains(beef stir fry scotch fillet) that was hardly touched by us. ON UNPACKING THE TAKE AWAY AT HOME I WAS SHOCKED TO FIND MORE THAN 2/3rds OF THE BEEF MAINS MISSING FROM THE PACKING! It was unbelievable that a so-called average and decent restaurant would resort to blatant 'stealing' of a customer's fully paid food item between the table and the take away packing. The food was delicious but after the experience tonight we won’t be coming back again. A lot of other restaurants have delicious food and actually value their customers that dine in the restaurant.<br/>It has all the hall marks of a desperate and failing restaurant. Not long before the inevitable happens, if this trend continues is all I can say. What a shame!
Harsh But Fair
Used to be much better than what it is now. They got stingy and it seems dead at times mid week.
Casual Dining
We arrived at 6:30 which was great as we got attended to very quickly and the food was on the table in a short time after. really enjoyed the night, food was first class and decor/atmosphere was also worth the visit. Maybe just need to up the spice level a bit? We definitely be back!
Kadriye
The place was really busy when we went there, which is always a good first sign, that its got to be good, service was still fast, food tasted amazing, I would recommend getting a few meals and sharing them. We'll be returning.

One of my favourite restaurants in Perth and for me, the best Thai food restaurant I have eaten at. Have been here many times over the last few years and the quality and taste of the food is always phenomenal. Personal favourites include pla goong, Thai beef carpaccio, tom kha kai (my favourite dish on the menu, it’s a must try), duck red curry (delicious signature dish) and the massaman curry. I honestly have not tried a dish here I haven’t liked, the restaurant itself has a beautiful refined ambience, the price is reasonable and the service has always been polite. Definitely worth trying if you haven’t been.
Jess Webster
Delicious!!! Had the chicken puffs, pulled pork and the red duck curry..Wish we had room for more but will definitely be back to try more again! :)
Rebecca Wood
Ultimately disappointing. Fish cakes are the cheap mass produced type you can buy in any Asian restaurant for less than a quarter of the price, they’re served indelicately cut in half and drenched in a sweet sauce. The silken Tofu is as far Removed from that description as possible. It’s more like styrofoam style concrete. Fried rice is reminiscent of a bad food hall meal you’ve sacrificed quantity over quality for the sake of a quick meal. Green curry is very oily and the chicken slices are dry and tough. This is a restaurant that has cut costs to the bone as crowds dwindle...with good reason. This place needs a rescue mission

I came here with my husband for dinner and we were seated near the window which was lovely. The staff were attentive without being overbearing. We ordered spring rolls for entree and pad Thai and beef curry for mains. The spring rolls were pretty standard and wouldn’t order again. The pad Thai and curry were really tasty even though they were quite expensive. Overall a great night out.
Kevin Clark
The quality of the food and service was great. <br/><br/>My only complaint is the portion size was small relative to the price. See pics and judge for yourself. I’d be happy if it was 25%+ cheaper so I could order more dishes. <br/><br/>Also slightly noisy for a Saturday night but but let this put you off. Mentioning it just in case you wanted a quiet dinner. <br/><br/>We were lucky the table adjacent to us was empty.
Amanda Goadby
Came here with my friend for the first time tonight - I can honestly say it was the best pad Thai I’ve ever had and the spring rolls were amazing. Keep up the good work!

In comparison with Itsara, Galangal lacked the authenticity of the complex Thai flavours. Even the plain steam rice tastes different at Itsara; each grain was distinct and shiny. The sticky mango rice was disappointing with only four slices of mango. My darling found the garlic and pepper chicken over cooked. My pork belly was good but again the portions are so small.
Ilovebeansprouts
Twice Roasted Pork Belly is delicious! Other dishes we enjoyed were the Massaman Beef Curry, Pineapple Prawns Curry and the Fried Barramundi. The Asian Greens Wok Fried was the least favourite of the night. Love the fact that the asian greens were fresh, but they weren't all cooked consistently- parts of them were still quite raw, hence making the dish feel more like a salad. For desserts, we had the Sticky Rice with Mango, Sticky Date Pudding and Coconut ice-cream- nothing special, but still enjoyable. <br/>Staff were great, but wait time in between dishes was a little too long.<br/>Food portions are quite small for the high price you pay, though overall, the flavours were good.
Blueskyfeed56
We did not enjoy our visit at Galangal<br/>The food was very poor, nobody at the table liked it ! The prawns were some of the smallest that I ever seen in a dish for the price charged<br/>The service was not with a smile, it seems the waitress did not want to be there !<br/>We won't be back
Little Epicurean
Not sure if its true but Ive heard that Galangal is no longer run by the previous owners. Let me start with the positives. Food here is quite delicious but a lil on the small side, most of us enjoyed the Thai fusion meals & we tried quite a few dishes off the menu. We were here as a larger group on a busy evening. Shop front is fancy & setting inside is nice albeit it can get quite noisy.<br/>Unfortunately though the service was a real let down. It took between 30-60mins for drinks to be served after our orders (thats the drinks alone). We ordered a bottle of red, it finally arrived after 30mins but with no glasses. Bottle was jus placed on the table. We had to ask 3 times for glasses to which one of the waitress actually got a little rude towards one of the guests. I can understand its a busy evening but if your staff is buckling under the pressure and in turn taking it out on the patrons, then perhaps you are understaffed. We noticed the patrons on table next to us arrived later and yet drinks was served to them first, with wine poured, yet we were left with just the bottle and no glasses. One of the guest on our table ordered a cocktail, it took almost an hour to arrive, we had to ask for it 4 times. Food service was also inconsistent. It took a long time to arrive but then all arrived at once so the table was over filled. Then it was another long wait between entrees & mains.<br/>Sorry Galangal but service really needs to be reviewed.

Thai food is a favourite cuisine of mine. Which makes galangal my choice restaurant. Great friendly staff and amazing owner always very welcoming and making sure you are happy and to top it off the food is amazing. Awesome flavours, never disappointed would recommend to anyone.
Louise Armstrong
Really good food. The soft crab starter is really tasty. The lamb special was not great compared to the prawn curries and pork belly. <br/>The sticky rice dessert was good. <br/>Expect to pay $100 per person including alcohol and 3 course meal. <br/>Only criticism is that some of the items on the menu were not available and tidy up service was slow.
Matt Smith
Delicious. It's difficult to find Thai food in Perth that isn't cheap and low quality. This was perfect. We had the Pad Prik King Goong prawn dish - best Thai prawns I have ever had no question. Also had the Massaman curry which was very nice and the cashew nut chicken also delicious. No meals were oily all were premium and yummy. Really nice quality food. Just reduced it to a 4 because I found out they charged us for water when they kept bringing it to the table...that's sneaky I don't like that.

We booked here for a quick (and early) dinner on a Friday night. They were very accommodating in that we booked for 6pm but needed to change to 6.30pm which they were very happy to do. The waitress was super efficient and very helpful.<br/>We ordered the massaman curry which was very flavourful (if a little wet but we ordered too much rice so happily we could soap up the delightful sauce with our extra rice!) and the crispy pork belly with green mango salad. We also had the chicken pad Thai. The crispy pork belly was delicious, crispy well spiced and the salad refreshing and spicy. The pad Thai was a bit bland tasting but was a good accompaniment to the other very flavourful dishes. Nice selection of wines here too. Prices are on the expensive side but the dishes are definitely worthy of a higher price tag if you want to compare to something cheaper down the road.<br/>Would definitely eat here again for lunch or dinner and would happily do take away too!

Food: 3/5<br/>Service: 2/5<br/><br/>For a place that has a fine dining feel and prices to match, we were shocked to be seated at a Bunnings tressel table hidden under a black table cloth! đŸ˜± Every dish was well presented, tasted satisfactory but overpriced. A large bowl of tom yum soup with a few prawns was $24 and a bowl of plain rice was $5! Dessert (pictured) is the only thing I would go back for: coconut ice cream with a 'tea-ramisu' ($14). I won't be heading back anytime soon.
Ems A Foodie
This place was very busy for a Tuesday night, so it must be popular, but I was very let down by the portion sizes. We ordered the tofu red curry - delicious, the deep friend tofu with cashew and sweet chilli sauce - average, the massaman beef curry (which is usually a winning dish) was tough. The pad thai was ok, but ive had better at a hawkers. The green curry chicken was also overcooked and the chicken was chewy. Its expensive and the servings are small.
J Jamo
Lovely looking restaurant and the meals were beautifully presented.<br/>Food was good but not great, lacking spice and will definitely request extra hot/chilli next time as the standard "medium" was disappointing.<br/>Very quick and efficient service although when entree plates were being cleared we were told we had to take back the dirty cutlery and keep them on the table for our mains. I've never had this experience before and I did think it was a bit strange.
Mrs_ox_qtn
Absolutely delicious. We order through UberEATS and we've never been disappointed. Fresh, amazing flavours and yummy every time. We can't get enough.
Sara J
Overall nice restaurant. Very very noisy so if you're looking for quiet fine dining this is not for you. We had a last minute booking (within 12 hours online) at 8pm and it showed, staff seemed a little annoyed we were there and had to prepare our table. It was right next to the kitchen but didn't really bother us, less people crammed in and it was already so noisy. Service wasn't attentive but sufficient, wait staff were very busy. Food was fresh and delicious, meals could be slightly bigger for the price. I would go back but on a quieter night.
Eleanor Robbins
Enjoyed the food but the service was average. Loved the pork belly with green mango and herb salad. Also had pad Thai and massaman curry. Servings are pretty small for the price, but well presented and tasty.<br/>We were missing a dish and asked 3 different staff where it was, they asked the kitchen and never came back to us. It finally came out a while after the rest of the food. Service was pretty slack and they weren't busy. Just need a good manager and it would be an outstanding place.
Spoonful Of Em
I called and made a reservation for 4 people early in the week but when we arrived there was no table for us. Lucky the manager was accommodating and seated us straight away. It is very busy on a Thursday night and has a wonderful atmosphere. The fake tea light candles are a little underwhelming but the rest of the décor is beautiful. The food was absolutely divine. I recommend the curry puffs as an entrée and for mains the garlic and pepper beef and the massaman curry were to die for. The food had some incredible flavours and it was so moreish. I would say it is a little bit overpriced given not all the dishes were served as large portions. However, I would definitely go to this restaurant with or without the entertainment book discount.
Gulilovesfood
Had a Panang curry, was really delicious, asked for not so spicy, and exactly what I got. Highly recommend! <br/>Location is great, perfect date place.
Delbs19
Fantastic first experience at Galangal for fine Thai food. The three main dishes we ordered featured punchy, full flavours and aromas, around $29 each. The Thai basil they use is potent, even the bean sprouts were big and crunchy! Pad Thai noodles were authentic. One serve of jasmine rice is $5.....
Billylamb
A Thai place that has a fine dining feel to it. Busy on a Friday night so definitely need a booking. I could see they also do quite a few takeaway orders and uber eats is available. We came here as it has good ratings and is 25% off with the entertainment book. Ordered the fried barramundi- very large generous serve which was great. The sauce however tasted like they had just poured bottled sweet chilli sauce over it. Not too impressed overall but the steamed broccoli underneath helped to counter balance the sweetness of the sauce. Green chicken curry was nice with eggplant and beans through it but not the best I've had. Pad Thai with prawns - prawns tasted fresh and juicy and loved the tofu bits through the pad Thai. The noodles could have had a bit more flavour and more crunchy nuts on top. We were really full afterwards but this would have been underwhelming and overpriced without the ent book voucher.
Jarrod
The food here is really amazing! Some of the best Thai food we have tried. The massaman beef curry was awesome! The duck curry, pork belly and chicken pad Thai were equally fantastic. I can't recommend this place enough. Service was good and atmosphere relaxing.
Emma Louise
Each dish we had, had a lot of flavour. However service was poor and the food was rather expensive for the small sized portions. The staff kept placing water on our table, we then noticed at the end we were charged for this, so take note. Probably wouldn't go back again.
Tammy Wang
We ordered take away from Galangal via uber eats. Very disappointed for what we got. We ordered a grilled prawn salad and massaman beef. The salad portion was very very small! It was only 1/4 of the container!! Don't tell me it was eaten by the uber driver on his way. The salad, only had prawn and some herbs leaves in it. How much do u think it will cost if you could add some fresh veggies in it? The was just a tiny bit of salad sauce, and the taste was very very strong and tangy. I've just ordered exact same thing from another restaurant few days ago, size was doubled and the flavour was better. <br/><br/>The massaman beef was just average, a food court quality. Same as the salad, the size was not very generous. 7 pieces of beaf and 2 pieces of carrots (or sweet potatoes). That's it. We didn't expect too much in a curry dish but this was very unacceptable for a main size dish. The sauces was goodsomehow it was so much compare to the salad. But the beef was very dry and tasteless. It was obvious that the beef was cooked separately, and they just added different sauces for different dishes.
It'skuks
Fantastic food, must try is the Pork Belly with Green Mango Salad (absolutely to die for) and the Massaman Curry. Food is packed full of flavour and you won't leave disappointed. One suggestion is to skip entree and order an additional main, entrees were not too exciting however the mains are fantastic;<br/><br/>Make sure you book ahead as 'walk in' tables are hard to come buy on the weekends.
More Than Nourishment
Hands down best Thai in Perth. I've dined in numerous times and also gotten take away. You can easily make a reservation online and the service is super friendly. Stand out dishes are the papaya salad, curry puffs, red duck curry, beef massaman curry and coconut ice cream. I could just eat the curry sauce with rice.. it's that tasty! It seems like they give you more of the sauce when you get take away compared to dining in. It is on the pricey side but worth the money! Will keep coming back. Yumm!!
Sassy
Top notch Thai food with a modern twist, the best I've had in Perth. We keep going back, it's so good. The service is polite and the food comes out quickly.
Janki Shah
Have had a terrible experience with this restaurant and staff. I have been here many times in the last 2 years and today called to make another reservation. I reiterated my dietary requirements only to be told that it was not possible for them to cater. I then mentioned I had been there a number of times and that the staff had mentioned that the food on the vegetarian menu met my dietary requirements. The lady on the phone was very rude told me she couldn't take my booking and hung up on me. I understand they can't take bookings if they are unable to make the required food. But staff should know what is in the dishes or ask if they are unsure. I have pretty much been lied to every time I have been here. If you have allergies or are vegetarian stay away! <br/>
Pravy
Came here for dinner. Ordered the green curry and sweet and sour vegetables with rice. The food was amazing and very authentic. As it is always busy, best to book well in advance. Service was good seeing as it was busy. Highly recommend it for visiting once.
The Culinary Enthusiast
The dishes are quite decent, however they do not really meet par with the portion size and prices that are charged. The duck in the red duck curry seemed too tough for my liking personally.
Foodie In Paradise
We came here last night and ordered the Tom yum goong, roast duck in red curry , pia rad prik ( barramundi dish), twice roasted pork belly and pineapple fried rice. <br/>Overall, food was quite tasty and flavorsome. Out of all the dishes that we ordered, I think the barramundi dish and the pork belly were the best. <br/>Service is so so... Seems quite chaotic when we walked into the restaurant. There was a bit of confusion with the booking. Lovely vibe and beautiful deco. Food's price tag is on the high side.
Lilia
This restaurant is average yet they are overcharging customers for their food, price is not worth it even given the bad customer service. You can go Northbridge for Authentic Thai cuisine that is much cheaper. <br/>Everyone just save your money ! the food at galangal is just bland/flavourless and not generous in portions.
Foodie
Great service, very friendly and attentive. The food is sensational! My favs are the curry puffs and the duck curry. The house wine was disappointing though - either was an old opened bottle or just very cheap and nasty. Prices are slightly high. Other than that I highly recommend a visit to this place
Foodage
At the 11th hour and on a suggestion of a friend, I picked up the phone and called the restaurant. The booking experience was good. Pleasant and professional. We fortunately got a table. I was a little excited as a quick internet check revealed that Galangal was in the top 10 in Perth. <br/>With ample parking across the road, Galangal was well positioned. The external signage was impressive. The immediate look and feel of the restaurant was that it was chic. Clean and modern. <br/>This place looks and feel high end. <br/>I can see that the hostess station could be a little chaotic on a busy night because as we arrived there was already 2 other groups in front and the entrance was gridlocked. <br/>We were ushered to our table and promptly provided with menus and enquiry about water.<br/>The prices in the menu confirmed where I thought the owners was pitching this place. I quipped to my follow quests "expect the portions to be small in this place". I'd like to think I'm somewhat prophetic but in truth it was obvious from the get go. <br/>It's ok to have higher prices on the menu but it does shift the emphasis of the restaurant experience. <br/>It becomes more than just the food. It's the tri factor of ambience, service and food. <br/>We were ready to order food for a good 10min before managed to usher someone and was told to "wait" not "give me a moment and I'll get someone for you".<br/>Apart from the water the drinks we ordered at the same time took an in ordinate amount of time to arrive. <br/>We instructed that all the food come out at the same time but the mains were about 10min behind the first (which happens to be an entree). <br/>When plates were given to us the waitperson waited for me to lift my serviette. And when my guest didn't the plates was pushed under the serviettes. <br/>In short the service was very laboured. As an outsider you can see that 1 or 2 were rather switched on and were hitting their straps. <br/>To be honest I expected the portion to be small but they were even smaller than I had imagined. It brought back my nightmarish experience at Chutney Mary's. <br/>First dish was deep fried tofu. Ok I'll skip this $11 dish because it was more basic than basic. <br/>Second was the Tom Kha Kai. Though I'm not a fan of Thai soups because of their sourness, I became a fan of this. Very well flavoured with heaps of lemon grass! <br/>The stir fried pepper prawns did hit the mark. Full of flavour and loved the bed of combination vegetables. <br/>Then there's the Masaman Curry. I have no issue with chefs taking artistic license and making dishes their own but... not quite there. The absence of peanuts and the gravy was on the watery side. But that's just my opinion. I think choice of the beef cut was strange. <br/>I get it running a restaurant and getting it all right is tough. <br/>There was mixed reactions. Some said they won't come back again and others said they would. Me on the other hand would like to go back and try some of their other dishes. Service could also have been off on the night. <br/>In conclusion and appropriately one of friends correctly pointed out that on the night hopefully just this one night, they were missing an important ingredient... "having a soul".

Great food, appalling service! Ordered a serve of fish cakes (4 in a serve) and was presented with five fish cakes on the plate. After each person on the table had had one (4 people) the waitress realized her mistake and quickly whisked the final fish cake away (probably to re serve it to another table). Drinks arrived after our entree. Ordered lime brulee for dessert, only to be told 10 minutes later that they didn't have any left... tried to order 2 scoops of coconut icecream however the waitress didn't understand and only 1 scoop was delivered. To top it off we were overcharged $56 because they added the lime brulees that they had run out of onto our bill! Sadly, the food itself was amazing but service let them down badly so will not be back after their cacophony of service errors!

The food at Galangal is top notch. We had their take on Money Bags, Larb Beef Carpaccio, Galloping Horses and a prawn based entree. The Money Bags were the best I've had. The entrees are on the pricey side for the size of the serve. On the other hand the deep fried Barramundi main was abundant. Service was excellent, and the drinks reasonably priced. You'll have a great feed here, but it may hurt your wallet.

Wow, what a restaurant. While we only go with the vegetarian options on the menu, the food that this place serves up is second to none. A staple weekend takeaway meal is the vegetarian sweet and sour stir fry. It can't be faulted and the generous portions are an added bonus. Staff are friendly both in person and on the phone and the dining experience cannot be faulted, although they do get quite busy on certain nights so keep that in mind. If you like Thai, get on it!

Tasty foods at this restaurant. As expected, very flavoursome Thai food. My dessert and cocktail was great too! Loved it. The place has a nice setting and atmosphere.

Went here last night with my wife for the first time. The restaurant was almost full and we were fortunate to get a table with our late reservation. The food was very good: we shared fish cakes and Tom Yum for entree and had Pad Thai, stir fry and rice for mains. Excellent fresh flavors. The service however was terrible! Lemongrass and ginger tea came cold, not luke warm, but water straight out of the tap cold. Pad Thai came out with the rice, and the stir-fry followed about 15 minutes later. They brought out chicken rather than beef. We sat and waited another 15 minutes for the stir fry, by which time the steamed rice was also cold. No offer to replace the rice until we asked. By the time it came, about another 10 minutes, we were finished. The comedy of errors did not go unnoticed by the manager, but to say they needed to get better. Left a bit disappointed as have been wanting to eat here for some time. I will give them another chance to get it right, based on the tasty food.

Flavour explosion!!!!<br/><br/>The cocktail was really unique. yamyen was a twist of good old thai ice tea which was really interesting. It was sweet, sour, and fragrant. I was already impressed.<br/><br/>I decided to start with Tom Kha Kai which was a tom yum like soup but with coconut milk. It was fragrant and rich in flavour. I'd suggest to go with the main size as it is equivalent to 4 entree size (entree size = 1 bowl).<br/><br/>For the main, I had the twice cooked pork belly which was served on top of thai salad. The pork belly was crispy and the salad was refreshing. I also ordered the red duck curry which was decent although not as impressive as the other two.<br/><br/>Overall it was a good experience. It could be spicier tho. The waitress told us that all food come in medium hot however it was all mild in my opinion. I will definitely come back and order a spicier version of these dishes.

Food was delicious, nicely presented modern Thai cuisine and the restaurant has nice white tablecloth. Prices on the expensive side, but nothing we couldn't reconcile. We had the soft shell crab, beef carpaccio and duck curry. All delicious. Food itself was 4/5.<br/><br/>Service was up and down. Good when we received service, but there were more times than not that we didn't get served for a long time. At the start we requested a table that wasn't in the walk path and directly facing the toilet (we went early so there were plenty, and we also booked), but were told the restaurant was booked out. At 8pm when we left, there were several 2 seater tables unoccupied. <br/><br/>Entrees took a reasonable time to come out, but mains took a while. Waitstaff were sometimes attentive to our dirty/empty plates and empty glasses. The slightly secluded location near the toilet entrance did not help.<br/><br/>After clearing our mains, we waited to be asked if we were interested in desserts/coffee. It never happened, so after 15 minutes we got up to pay. Then waited another 10 minutes to get served up the front to pay the bill. To be fair, they were pretty busy. But we have been to busier restaurants who deliver better and genuine hospitality. Service and hospitality 2.5/5, major letdown.<br/><br/>Ambience is nice, date night appropriate (apart from the table facing the toilets and in the walk path - yes this is a broken record now). The inconsistent service was really a mood killer. My partner is usually not picky with restaurants and he was not impressed- he "would not be rushing back anytime soon".<br/><br/>Definitely worth a try food wise.

Beautiful food and lovely staff. Came here for a birthday dinner. Highly recommended dishes are the papaya salad, roast duck in red curry, pork belly and mango sticky rice cake!

Tried this place for the first time tonight with a bunch of friends and Galangal did not disappoint! Thursday night and the restaurant was packed. Service was a little slow at times but the food came out in good time. We ordered fish cakes and soft shell crab for entree - both were v good. For mains we ordered red duck curry, massaman curry, twice roast pork belly, vegetarian pad Thai, coconut rice and fried rice. All the mains were delicious, the only criticism is that portions are a little small for the higher than average price tag attached. Otherwise, this a great place for a special occasion! We decided to try a few desserts including the sticky rice with coconut ice cream, lime brulee tart and sticky date pudding. Again, all were pretty good. Looking forward to coming to this restaurant again in the future!

Went there on a wed night without a reservation. We got a table in a not-so nice part of the restaurant but soon realised why - the restaurant was packed!! The food and service were both remarkable! Very considerate, attentive and polite staff, knowledgeable about their food. Soft shell crab was the star of the night. Lovely flavours. Very impressed with their spring rolls - they were freshly made, plump, juicy and not from a packet. Food dished out with care and looks delectable too. <br/>It was a fantastic find and I would definitely go back - with a reservation next time!

Very good Thai food. Service is pretty<br/>Good as well. Nice setting internally,<br/>Can't really fault it . A little more expensive that your typically Thai.
Munchie Junkie
The only bad thing about Galangal is trying to get a booking. They get booked out so you have to book well in advance. There's a reason for that, the food is amazing. Everything is cooked to perfection and more importantly, seasoned and flavoured to perfection. Will be going back.

Had a fabulous meal at Galangal a few weeks ago ... deeee-licious! I visited the restaurant when it was based out in Vic Park and what a joy it was then, (albeit small and always booked out!) and its good to know the standard of food is still outstanding. We enjoyed the Red duck curry, Garlic and pepper prawns, mixed asian greens and a vegetarian friend devoured her vege pad thai... yum yum yum! Highly recommend this restaurant for a good feed of Thai cuisine.AND! Its BYO wine! Legends!
Edward
A wonderful place - Suburban Thai with style and manners - delicate and friendly service, a serious wine list and the option of BYO ($8 per bottle) with well shaped wine glasses; and of course killer food. Spiced, hot, salty and full of contrasting textures. Only a pair of photos - a excellent ma hor and very modestly sized though delicious pork belly main.
Take Me To Foodie Heaven
Located in the heart of Mount Hawthorn, Galangal has always been an institution for good, authentic Thai food. From hearing a lot about Galangal, it has always been on my list of must go restaurants. Last Friday, we had a spontaneous decision to head to Galangal for dinner and was very lucky to get a booking 30 minutes before we arrive due to a cancellation.

Delicious prawn and pineapple Thai red curry-full of flavour, rich and creamy! Went back for more a few weeks later and again a few weeks after that 😊 the chicken spring rolls are delicious (although I'd prefer vegetarian spring rolls). The duck red curry and beef masaman curry also went down a treat with our group.
PerthfectBreakfast
I'd rate the food alone a 3.5 but I'll kick it up to 4/5 for the super polite, efficient service. Galangal is a little bit fancy pants. I liked the warmly lit dining room. It was buzzing but the food came out so fast. <br/><br/>We ordered the roast duck red curry, twice cooked pork belly, chicken pad Thai and rice to share. Definitely one of the better roast duck curries I've had. Sauce was nice and thick like a chu chee curry. Pork belly had great crackling and sat on top a bed of fresh green mango, Thai Basil and a lovely salty/spicy fish sauce dressing. Pad Thai had a little too much tomato sauce in it but was not bad.<br/><br/>Didn't bother with desserts though as they were sticky rice or coconut based. Not my thang. <br/><br/>I would recommend this place for date night.

AMAZING!!! Had been wanting to try this place for ages and now I wonder why we waited so long. <br/>We had the spring rolls and beetle leaf prawn special for entree and both were incredible. We then had the crispy duck in red curry and pad Thai and seriously the flavors were absolutely delicious! We were so full by this time but decided to try the desserts which were up to the same standard of both entrees and mains. We had he lime brĂ»lĂ©e and sticky rice with coconut ice cream (both ice creams served were homemade and beautiful). Aside from the food service was wonderful and attentive and the ambiance was really warm and relaxing. We will definitely be back! 😊

Expensive and small portion. Not recommended ! Too costly for what it is .. <br/>We ordered the red curry tofu. The tofu was cut into tiny long pieces and deep fried. Can't even really taste the tofu; it is all battered.

Such nice food. We had fish cakes to start - they were perfect with a sweet sauce and plenty of delicious toppings. For main we shared chicken pad Thai, one serve of rice and the pineapple prawn curry. The pad Thai was great, lots of crunchy flavourful bits, and a generous serve of noodles, chicken and bean shoots. It had the perfect amount of oiliness and sauce. The curry was so fantastic - we were blown away by the flavours! Very rich and perfectly balanced sauce, delicious prawns. So, so good. Service was mostly very good - staff were friendly and food and drinks came out quickly. With two soft drinks, the bill came to $78.50 - a bit expensive, but worth it.

Decided to drop in for a casual Friday lunch. The service and food were AMAZING. Polite staff, well priced and big portions. Can't recommend this place enough!

Had a booking for 10 adults and 2 children on sat night. We had the set menu which had many good dishes to choose from. The service was quick and friendly and the food was fresh and amazingly full of beautiful flavour. Can't wait to go back and try the other dishes. As we left it started to rain and the waiter walked us to the car with an umbrella with our two kids. Now you don't get service like that anymore. Highly impressed in every way.

Went to Galangal for dinner with my partner, I am Thai and she enjoys Thai food. The restaurant and staff set a great mood, fantastic ambience. But best of all the food was top notch. The menu is not as vast as some other places but by keeping it simple each dish is perfected, of the dishes we ate all were amazing, good Thai flavours but balanced and never overpowering. Would recommend the larb with beef.
MarsBar
My family and I had a fantastic meal here for Mother's Day. Definitely one of the best Thai meals I've had in Perth. The food was delicious; fresh, full-flavoured and had just the right amount of heat - and I like my chilli! The duck curry is highly recommended. Definitely going back the next time a craving for Thai hits...
PP
Lovely inviting interior. Tasty food, the vegetarian Tom Yum soup packed a punch and was super tasty, they have a separate vegetarian menu which was great. Will be visiting this place again.
Asian Fusion
Best Thai in Perth! Every dish is packed full of flavour and presented beautifully. Yes, you will pay more for your Pad Thai than your local around the corner but it will be seriously worth it. The pork belly salad is the bomb!
Jeffrey Zhang
Trip adviser list it as top 10 restaurant in Perth. So it brought us here.<br/><br/>Basically it was disappointed experience.<br/><br/>We made table booking one week in advance, however when we walk in to the store, we been told that the table been given to anther customer.<br/>So we only can tabled in a corner where really dark and squeeze( I can't move my arm and has to move table away from window).<br/><br/>Talking about food. We ordered 5 include a dessert and been told one of main course sold out and dessert is not available(should cross it off menu). Not good right?<br/><br/>The flavour. Papaya salad has got good flavour but shrimp inside as hard as rock. Beef in red curry good flavour but beef is not tender at all. Pineapple prawn is recommended out of all five course. Tom yum goong was a disaster. Way below home made average. Desert, don't want to talk it.<br/><br/>Good side. Service is good. Shop frontage is good . Good interior.<br/><br/>Recommendation: if you are looking for good taste, this isn't the place you looking for. At least I wouldn't visit here again. <br/><br/>

Galangal has won gold plate awards and moved from East Victoria Park to Mount Hawthorn since my last visit. The prices have jumped up - the mains are almost $10 more expensive now...<br/><br/>Likes: red duck curry, seared prawns, proper spicy papaya salad<br/><br/>Dislikes: big bump in prices since the move to Mount Hawthorn<br/><br/>Value for money: prices are high, but the food is quality<br/><br/>Overall: great suburban spot for legit and delish (but pricey) Thai food

Came here for a farewell lunch with 15+ colleagues. The lunch menu is reasonably priced. If you can't handle spicy food, best to stick with the entrees, pad thai, fried rice or sweet and sour dishes lol. Pretty much everything else is hot hot hot. <br/><br/>The timing of dishes being served was a bit haphazard. Half the table received theirs and the other half had to wait an extra 20 minutes. <br/><br/>The stir fried basil and chilli chicken was good but I couldn't help thinking it was more like a chicken larb with the minced chicken. The dish could have done without the extra chilli flakes as it overpowered the rest of the herbs and made wimpy me "cry from the heat" lol.<br/><br/>I don't know about you guys but when I read sukiyaki on a menu, I immediately think meat and vegetables served in a hot pot of broth. The sukiyaki here was just meat, glass noodles and Asian vegetables stir fried in a hot red curry paste and served on a hot plate. The guys had ordered thinking it would not be too spicy but it was hot hot hot. Some swapping of dishes occurred amongst us lol.<br/><br/>Thai restaurants are usually risky due to my peanut and Crustacea allergies. I left the restaurant without a reaction which is a good outcome.

Outstanding meal, absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. Amazing service, wonderful ambiance and very reasonably priced. Well worth a visit!
#balloluvsgrub
Top notch food, better than the Long Chim according to my better half. The portion sizes are on the smallish side but what they lack in quantity they make up in quality of flavours. Awesome experience & we will definitely be back for another round!

Best local Thai around! Definitely on the pricey side but well worth it. We have ordered a few times and have never been disappointed.  Usually, we have the Chicken and Corn parcels to start, the Pad Thai, Green Papaya Salad and Roast Duck curry... the curry is simply heaven and I'd never go past it (why ruin a good thing!).
Tara.smith
Several visits and it has been excellent every time. Fresh, fragrant and spicy. A nice selection of dishes for sharing. All Yum! It's busy every night of the week, so worth booking.

We came here for dinner on a Saturday night as recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed. The food is so fresh and full of taste and flavour. The 4 of us shared entrees - fish cakes, prawn special, carpaccio and the galloping horses. All were great but I am a bit of a woosie with chilli and some of the dishes definitely had a strong bite. For our mains we shared chicken and cashew, pork belly, pad prik king goong and the massaman curry. We enjoyed them all but agreed the pork could have had a crispier top. We also all agreed the massaman curry is one of the best we have ever had. I would return just for that! Food is outstanding. The service is very efficient and friendly but be warned the food comes out so quickly you could be in an out within 30 minutes so I suggest you order as you go. I have never witnessed food coming out so quickly. Also $8 per bottle for corkage seems excessive but small price to pay for the wonderful food. We've been to both places twice and this place beats Long Chim as far as best thai in Perth
Mar
Great service, food and value. Highly recommended. Only thing we didn't like was that bright lights were flicked on at 10.15 pm on Friday night while many table were still occupied -I'm assuming to urge us to hurry up and go. A cold ending to an otherwise warm evening.

DO NOT GO NEAR HERE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, THEY ARE NOT WELCOME! returning customer, we have enjoyed the old restaurant a few times and we were looking forward to being able to bring the whole family to the new larger restaurant with better access for wheelchair users. I cannot fault the food because it was great as usual but the service and the rudeness of many people because we dared bring our grandchildren to my birthday dinner was unforgivable, the food was very slow to come out, resulting in the children becoming a little more vocal, if it were a quiet classy restaurant I could understand the problem, but this is a busy & noisy casual establishment and instead of trying to assist us with a solution, we were told that the children would have to leave! Once my Son and his beautiful 1 & 2 year old were forced to leave, the wait staff continued to bring food that was ordered by the evacuees, of which was added onto our bill! Then without a clear knowledge or just ignorance of the English language we could not get any satisfaction. Never ever again! DO NOT GO NEAR HERE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN, THEY ARE NOT WELCOME!

Best Thai in Perth. Admittedly, the previous venue was more intimate and now the new place is bustling and suburban. But you go for the good. Byo wine :)

Good Thai restaurant. A little expensive. Green Thai curry was nice. As well as prawns. Stir fry was good. Decor and ambience was good. Service was good. Surcharge for credit cards
Queen Of Bad Timing
Our second entree was the Thai beef carpaccio with larb dressing ($18.00). It's a beautiful tangle of ingredients, including coriander, mint, shallot, lime, chilli, fish sauce and ground toasted rice. I love the long, generous strips of barely cooked beef that have soaked in the sauce. It's a playful alternative to your standard seared beef salads, and one that lets the other ingredients still shine while heroing the protein. The dressing is reminiscent of what we'd experienced with our betel leaf dish - which tends to be the case with Thai food, it does revolve around many of the same ingredients.

Our first experience at Galangal was amazing! It took us back to Our holiday in Thailand last year with its fast and friendly service and authentic good food. We ordered the Pla Goong which was absolutely delicious. Each mouthful packed complexity and flavour with a subtle lingering heat.. Devine! For mains we went for the traditional green curry which had thin slivers of chicken breast with beans, eggplant, capsicum and basil. Massaman curry, beautifully nutty, extremely rich and creamy accompanied with perfectly tender sweet potato, very nice indeed. The vegetable fried rice gets a mention but it was pretty average. For all of that plus two alcoholic drinks took the bill to $108. They charge a 1.8% surcharge for all credit card transactions so diners be aware. All in all, it's nicely decorated and the foods great.<br/>

I would never go back here again ever. I am Thai and i really disapointed. We walks in around 6 pm got a table stright away which is good. Then i sat down to realise that airconditioning was not turned on. We sat right next to big window and i happen to sit opposite to the sun. I was blind completely by the sun. Didnt wanna make any issue so i just kept quiet. We ordered 3 dishes and non of them arrive at the same time. We waiting and waiting till all the food arrived 30 minuite in the sun still in my eyes and cant see anything else but the sun. I could not look at my partner and make any conversation so i just stairing down at the food. I ate as fast as i can so i dont have to be in that place any longer. Food are very very average. Money that you pay for is for the fancy lights and decoration in the restaurant. Food served in nice plate but i barly see any meat in it. So i think this place very overated. Go try yourself sit on table 34 at 6 pm see if you will have a good time. I certainly hate this place.<br/>

Really nice and cosy interior, a little noisy but to be expected when its so full. Food had good flavours and nicely presented. I was a little disappointed with the portion sizes which didn't match the prize tags and the fish was very salty. Will have to try other items on the menu next time.
