Review Himali Gurkha Nepalese Restaurant - Perth

Sagely Kayastha
Excellent food and service was so good so respectful and environment was awesome. It was calm and peaceful. Price for dishes and everything was good. Loved it. Highly recommended Nepalese restaurants so far
Hitesh Tulsani
Excellent taste, authentic Nepalese place. Went there with a group of friends. The chicken was soft and tender, tatsed yummy with puri.

We popped in for a lunch and enjoyed the set lunch menu with momos, curry, and BBQ with rice and vegetables. This was an excellent meal, and I had the lamb curry. Big, tender chunks of lamb with a delicious aromatic gravy. Not spicy hot, but SO good. My wife enjoyed the goat curry too. We live 90 minutes away, but guaranteed we'll be back to select of their diverse menu. Warm, friendly staff and amazing chefs! 5/5 would highly recommend!!

Really nice place for some Nepalese food. Definitely somewhere to go when you just need something quick but not through the roof in bills. Delicious and will be coming here for the next 40 years! 🤗

Our dinner was amazing! We didn't know what authentic Nepalese food tastes like but since our Nepalese friends brought us there, it must be pretty close to the real deal. We had a great time and the staff were very friendly in helping us accommodate our kids as well.
Alex
Came here on a recommendation from a friend and it was fantastic!! We were seated right away on a busy Sat without reservation. The set dinner menu had a great diversity of dishes and flavors. The momos and bbq chicken were so good. Loved it and would definitely recommend.

I love this place! You can tell by the regulars who have banter with the lovely owners that it is a firm favourite! The kids menu was fantastic! Lollipop chicken for the win...I may order that for myself :) really amazing service great place to meet friends!

I can't recommend this gorgeous little restaurant highly enough. I love everything about Himali Gurkha, the very kind and generous owner Eskna, the sweet waitresses, divine food, and the ambience, Magnificent - such a warm, peaceful and loving vibe, I could have sat there for hours... can't wait until my next visit.

Great food and experience. Friendly staff and welcoming decor. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant.

My boyfriend and I love this restaurant. Absolutely delicious food and great service. Always the first place we think of when going out or getting take away. The beef choyla is a must.
Diane Clark
Food is good but as a regular customer for 20 or more years. It's almost kept the same menu, so I'm getting a tad bored. Maybe a weekly or monthly chef special would freshen up the taste palette. I love coriander, but I have some friends that do not like the herb. So maybe a few dishes without coriander would be good. Staff are always friendly and the service is excellent.

Best of the best This restaurant has the best quality in Perth I hv been many other restaurants but these guys are the best in quality and service

Booked a table in advance...and lucky we did. Walked in, saw that the place was packed to the rafters, and people were constantly popping in and out for take away orders. So we knew the food must be good. And it was....absolutely delicious.

Food here is amazing - always just so tasty and excellent ... we just keep coming back! Xx

My wife and I love this place. Every dish we have tried is amazing and the crew are delightful. Thanks Himali Gurkha

My husband and I had lunch here, very disappointing. The service and food was very poor and overpriced. We had the lunch special, which we were told was the same as the main menu serves. We received 1 lamb chop for $19! Left hungry and unsatisfied. Would not recommend to anyone.

We had our beloved daughter's 21st Birthday celebration and we were so well taken care of by Ozgur and Krishna. The food was amazing & has converted a few Nepalese newbies

My husband and I love this restaurant! The food is delicious, the service is excellent. The staff are very friendly. We have been comming for many years now, and not once has the standard dropped.

Very fresh and well prepared food consistently. Great lunch curry combo. <br/>Staff are very friendly and informative. They have pride in their food.

It was a really busy Friday night, the whole restaurant was full but we managed to get a table. Ordered half fried half steamed momos, eggplant curry and chicken curry. Everything was so tasty! The fried momos were my favourite amongst all the dishes and the eggplant curry was a close second! Chicken curry was good but not outstanding

This is our first time trying Himalayan/Nepalese food and I'm in love thanks to Himali Gurkha! We ordered the Momos (half fried and half steamed), the Chef's special Himali Chicken, the Daal Ra Saag (Lentil Spinach curry) and the rice and Puri (soft bread). <br/><br/>The decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was outstanding, it was very nice and tranquil with beautiful and fitting designs and decorations that made the experience even better. The waitstaff were extremely helpful and friendly when giving us information and helping us decide which dishes to order. <br/><br/>The momo's were the best, the fried ones were perfectly crisp without being oily and the sauce that came with it was very special too. The Himali chicken was so tender and juicy and lentil spinach curry was very delicious and not too heavy in terms of flavour and spices. The soft warm bread and rice were also cooked to perfection. <br/><br/>Overall, a great experience and would definitely come back! The price is very reasonable too for a unique experience

Came here for the first time for my birthday lunch. Food was surprisingly good as this was my first time trying Nepalese food. Ordered their mild lamb curry, eggplants, deep fried okra (wouldn’t recommend this as it was a bit spicy and not that tasty), Momo (dumplings) and Puri (Deep fried soft flour bread). Portion looked small but it was more than enough for the three of us. Food was tasty and heartwarming. Recommend to have their food during winter. The ambience and decor was nice as though you were in Nepal as soon as you entered the restaurant. The price was okay as we used the entertainment book discount.

Delicious Nepalese fare. <br/>What I loved - the spicy beef curry and tandoori style chicken. <br/>What I thought was good - eggplant curry, chicken momos<br/>What I might not order again - Lamb curry with spinach (couldn't taste the spinach really, the taste was not distinctly different from other curries we ordered)

The waitress was so rude it almost felt like we were on a candid camera show .<br/><br/>it was actually the first time we walked out of a restaurant due to bad service. The waitress was rolling her eyes on simple questions, forcing us to get dishes we did not want, and even refusing to take our order on the extra rice we wanted- even going so far as saying "i already told you that the dish has rice!"..it was completely disrespectful, especially since we are not difficult customers as we also come from the service/hospitality industry and know what its like.<br/><br/>it was such a surreal experience. Almost like a joke. i would give 0 stars id i could<br/><br/>

Very interesting food, really enjoyed all the flavours even when a little spicey for me. Highly recommend both the fried and steamed Momo, you can definitely taste that they are homemade. The Puri bread could be a main meal dish on its own, it's that delicious! Lamb was very soft, chicken was cooked very well and the desserts were very yum. Even the complimentary nuts were interesting. It gets pricey if you order the large of a few dishes but then there's plenty of leftovers for the next day.<br/>The restaurant can handle approx 40 people but it's a popular place so make sure you book a table.
Sandhya1814
Food was decent, found it more pricey compared to other indian restaurants especially when it wasnt anything special. Service staff could be more approachable compared to their stern faces. I enjoyed my meal i guess thats the most impt part. Had the lamb cutlets and dhal. Love the dhal the most!!
Janice
Bit disappointed that the owner told an outgoing party that they were supposed to have left by a certain time. It was obvious they were leaving but it's not kosher to tell paying customers to leave. It was okay that the table reserved for us was preoccupied as there were two other tables free.<br/><br/>I grew up in the restaurant business. It's un-Australian to tell paying customers to leave. The return business is more important for the longevity of business regardless of how good the location is. The rush hour is peak time, then it's dead. This is Perth. Kitchens close by 9pm during weekdays, then 1030pm weekends. The owner needs to thank customers so they return. Don't rely on location. <br/><br/>The small things were not well done this time round. If I eat out, it's got to be better than my home cooking. During peak time, things like dumplings & rice need to be fresh. The dumplings were overcooked. The rice was lumpy and not fresh. The mango lassi was minus the mango. It was disgusting! The curries were flavoursome. <br/><br/>I was looking forward to returning to this restaurant, but I'll take my business to Inglewood next time. It's Asian fusion dumplings were fresh and a visual delight!

The food here is fantastic. Recommend the banquet option to try everything. The lamb cutlets, goat curry and dahl with spinach are especially good.

This place is always busy. Went last night it was okay . Service was brilliant food was tasty just a bit heavy for us . Will try again though maybe try something a bit different . The momos were delicious steamed

We visited for the first time on Saturday night and we were very pleased with our meals. We had the thali which was great value with the refillable curries. The marinaded lamb and chicken are delicious as was the beef curry; really tender meat and a tasty sauce. The Puri was also good as were the chicken dumplings. The servos was efficient and friendly. Overall a brilliant meal: we will be back
Lola
We love the Himalayan Nepalese restaurant in Vic Park and so wanted to try a different restaurant offering similar foods. We couldn't have been more disappointed with this food! It was so unbelievably watery, and just tasted like uncooked curry powder and spices. How this place rates so well is simply beyond me! We will not be returning.
Hunt4more
I'm sorry I've heard many good things about this place but it's just not my taste.  Admittedly I've only been once and it was a Saturday night (so busy).  Service was flat.  Food (a meat platter thing) served cool but tasted okay.

We love the Himalayan Gherkin. The set meal is outstanding value and gives a really great taste of everything this cute little restaurant does. The naan here is spectacular, fresh and so very tasty. I love the naan. Staff are great. Dumplings are a winner. Highly Recommended!
Pennae
Very good dumplings! A nice spin on favourites you may find at Indian restaurants. Good portion sizes and Entertainment Book friendly.

I've visited this restaurant twice before and left with a good impression. Although this time it was bland to scrumptious food. The cheese balls were lovely especially the tangy orange sauce that comes with it compliments it perfectly. The marinated chicken was dry and I was expecting it to be more flavourful if it was marinated for 12 hours. The chicken tomato based curry was boring and bland. The mild lamb curry was scrumptious! It was rich and flavourful, the meat was nice and soft. The spinach side was meh, uneventful. It seems like you need to know what to order or its hit or miss. We had 2 delicious menu items and 3 that left more to be desired. Service was understaffed so we waited awhile to order, get takeaway done and to pay. I'm not sure if I'd give it another shot.
Sharon Mchenry-Allan
This is an awesome place, great food, great service! Recommend the Thali as value for money. The lamb cutlets for meat eaters are excellent. The vegetarian options are yummo! Been going there for years and never had a bad meal or experience! 👍👍
Damien
Loved the food, authentic, fresh and i didnt feel like i was breaking the bank to have a good meal. I was also just stopping in for lunch and found myself dining alone, the staff were friendly, welcoming and made sure i didnt feel uncomfortable being the loner.<br/><br/>Ill be coming again for sure!
Sweet Baby Ray
Really sweet little place. The food was simple, traditional and tasty. The chef definitely knows his stuff. Great starters, mains and desserts - lovely goat curry and baklava. Really kind, considerate and prompt service.

One of the worst restaurants i've ever been too. We ordered the thali and it was very bland. No spices, no herbs, no flavour !.....The restaurant itself is small and the tables all close together, the service was atrocious. If you know what a proper curry is then you wouldn't like it either. Place to avoid
Restaurant Review
Tasty, authentic food and charming, homely atmosphere. Staff were friendly and helpful, even when they had to kick us out at closing time because we were having such a great time we didn't notice how late it was! Entertainment card meant we spent about $30 each for a combination plate that we could restock as much as we liked. Will certainly come back here again.

A very pleasant dining experience overall. It's one of only a few places open on a Monday night, and perhaps that's why it already had several tables seated only 15mins after the 6:00pm opening time. By the time we left at 7:15pm, I counted 17 patrons, including my wife and I. The service from the two ladies was both friendly and helpful. The food was quick to arrive, and was very tasty. We had the chicken momo, hot beef curry, seasonal vegetables, lentil dahl, and plain rice, and every dish was tasty, fresh and served hot. The mango lassie was on the bland side, and could have done with more mango in it, but otherwise, good value for money, and we are certainly keen to return to try out other items from the menu

Haven't been here for so long, but the cheeseballs are still as good as ever...which I was thankful for as I had raved about them to my work mates I was going with all week prior. With our table of 9 we started with a large cheeseballs just so they could try them. They loved them! Then we all had the meat thali plate...great value and heaps easier for a big group! The thali doesn't come with cheeseballs, just order them as well...trust me!!
EnjoyinGodsBlessing
Must try the himali gurkha beef!! It comes in cute little steel bowl, like rendang style... But packed with tones of flavour :D my kids like the dumpling momo and the lollipop chicken... Most of the menu is spicy, but they have kids menu like bbq/grilled chicken or fish n chips.. This restaurant is usually fully booked on the weekends, be sure to book early or dine on weekdays...
Foodrinkperth
Have dined here several times whilst the food was reasonably tasty the service was efficient enough just not overly welcoming. The restaurant was extremely busy with the intent to try and rush everyone through as quickly as possible - for this reason it reflects In the quality of food being served.
Cassie
Went on Tuesday night and was able to get a booking for two 15mins before arriving. It was quite busy for a Tuesday night with the restaurant full. We ordered the chicken, chickpea and potato curry and lentils with rice. I found the food okay, but felt that the dishes could've had more flavour.
Marilyn Hogan
My husband and I had lunch here, very disappointing. The service and food was exceptionally poor. We had the lunch special; which was explained to be the same as choices from the main menu.  We were astonished to be served only 1 small lamb chop for $19! We left hungry!<br/>Would not recommend to anyone.
Angelino
Very bad experience. Went there with my sons and was treated to a very average service and food quality that was below an average food court standard.

Went with friends on a wednesday night. So busy! Small restaurant. Staff friendly. Had thali, which is a mixed platter which can be filled again and again- bit like a tasting plate. Food was to die for. Byo wine. Boys had few beers and the total was $176.
Bri
Enjoyed our meal tonight although poor service let it down. All the staff we dealt with were distracted, didn't smile and seemed annoyed by our presence. Food was quite good but not super special - we did enjoy the puris though. Was busy, even on a Monday.

Best Nepalese food in Perth. The best momo, chicken lolly pop, good service and we r always been looked after very well.<br/>Not to forget gulab jamun
CitySmack
Amazing Food, but there's a wait when busy. I've eaten here a few times now and the food has always blown me away. Except the fish curry, it was bland and definitely won't be ordering that again. But I always try something new and 90% of the time, spot on. The wait for food can be long if it's crowded, not sure if the kitchen if big enough for how many tables they cram in. The service is good and we are always treated very well, even when we had to wait for a table. Highly recommend and will be back again soon!

Fabulous food & service. I had heard good reviews from a few friends who had been to the Himali Gurkha. Having a casual birthday lunch with friends after a movie for lunch, I can't tell you how wonderful Himali Gurkha experience was. <br/>Firstly I rang and left a message to make a booking. My phone call was returned promptly. I explained the finishing time of the movie and said we'd be their ASAP. They told us no problems, we usual close at 2pm but are happy to keep the restaurant open until we had finished our meals. Which they did. We had children to pick up, about 2:40pm<br/>The resturant has a feeling of warmth, like when you visit your family and you know you're in for great food and company.<br/>Our waitress (owner) helped us choose our dishes, explaining how they were cooked, spices, heat, etc...<br/>I saw the Chef smiling enthusiastically from the kitchen waiting eagerly to cook for my table of ten noisy ladies. (And others in the resturant).<br/>The food came out quickly, oh the aroma was heavenly. Very quickly the noisy table of ten ladies was soon hushed by a lot of mmm, yum, oh and ah's! The aroma certainly matched the flavours. I can not describe the flavours except DELICIOUS!<br/>The Chef walked through with the waitress to check if everything was ok. Yes, Yes, Yes!! <br/>I have told everyone I've seen about this little hidden gem. I am looking forward to returning soon with my husband, children, family and friends, including the ten noisy ladies! <br/>I've never written a review before but I was compelled.<br/> Enjoy!!!!! I did!!!!!!!

Excellent food, top class service and very comfortable environment. Nut allergy friendly too!!!. A group of 9 of us came here to celebrate our friend's birthday. The waitress was extremely friendly and polite, catered to all our needs. Food came out really quickly (20 mins) despite 9 big orders of mostly the Set Menu.<br/><br/>And wow, what a treat it was. All sides were perfectly tasty, not too salty or spicy but very aromatic. Loved the Momos and we all liked how they weren't reluctant to refill our sides and even Momos. When they say it's refillable, it really is. They don't take half an hour to bring out your sides to save themselves money, they actually want their customers to eat and enjoy their food! The waitress came around every 10 minutes or so asking if we wanted any more sides and she took orders like that to ensure no-one was left out. Oh... and the Momos were refillable too!!!! I really liked the curry vegetables and the chicken curry. The puri (fried bread) was delicious and fresh, just perfect with the daal. 25% entertainment voucher makes the dinner even more enjoyable.<br/><br/>All in all, all 9 of us agreed we'd definitely come back even without the 25% voucher. The owner even gave the birthday boy a special Nepalese hat and a free cocktail to celebrate. Also, as I'm allergic to all nuts, I didn't have a problem with any of their dishes! Just magnificent and my hat goes off to the owners of this fine restaurant.

A wonderful meal. What a great little neighbourhood restaurant tucked away in Ardross! My husband and I ordered take-away from Himali Gurkha and enjoyed every dish. The rice balls were cooked to perfection, the beef curry was lean and tender and perfectly balanced, the bread was delicious and the vegetable curry was delicious. This was our second experience eating the food from this little restaurant and we will definitely return.

A Lovely Experience. I had dinner here last night with a few lady friends. The service was friendly, the food came out in a timely fashion, and it was all delicious -- very reasonably priced too.

Trevor and Sally. We love this place! We've been eating there for years... we keep going back because the service is always friendly and efficient the food is reliabliy outstanding whether is dine in or take away. Totally recommend it to anyone who LOVES good food.

Poor service, loooong wait!. Was excited about eating here but the service and wait time for our meal was well blow average!<br/>I sat and watched 3 other groups who arrived after us receive there meals and eat, pay and leave before us! <br/>The food was nice but the experience was ruined by poor customer service.

1hr 45m for mains. * Had a reservation x 5 adults 1 x child<br/>* had a ask for someone to take our order (15 mins waiting)<br/>* they were busy n booked BUT no excuse, don't over book or get more staff - it's not hard I run a business<br/>* 25 minutes for entree to arrive<br/>* ask for drinks order once - lost profits there for sure<br/>* child meal was tested by meal and potato chips were that hot they burnt the roof of my mouth - too hot for an adult LET ALONE a child wtf?<br/>* 3 other tables were served before us (mains) as they didn't order entrees. Not ok when we have been waiting for mains longer than they had been in restaurant <br/>* 2 x told only 2 minutes away your meal - apologises made for long wait BUT....<br/><br/>Not acceptable - obviously DONT want repeat clients
Stephanie.douglas58
Happy Diner!. Went there last night, there was 8 of us. They fitted us in which was great due to our late booking. Food was great & the staff were friendly. The service was excellent. We will be back for sure!

Great food, nice staff, small and noisy restaurant.. I visited this restaurant with my husband and a few friends recently on a Saturday night. Although I enjoyed the food and found the staff to be friendly, I wouldn't rush back to this restaurant. It got very noisy and I found the place to be a bit cramped as the restaurant is a little on the small side. Something I found to be annoying was that a staff member asked us to settle the bill as they had other customers waiting for the table. I wouldn't have minded this if we were just sitting there talking, but we had literally just finished our dessert and one of us was still drinking coffee. Also our table was to the left of the entrance door, so each time this opened we got a rush of cold air. Our friend on the end of the table had to lean across occasionally to close the door as it often wasn't fully closed (it is a sliding door). This place would be great for a couple going out for a quick and tasty bite to eat, but I wouldn't return with friends again.

What a great experience! Booked a table of 9 for my wife's birthday. From the very start - the service was exceptional (even though it was busy). The food was also exceptionally good. We will be back for sure - recommend it highly. Great work Himali Gurkha.
Penny Allinone
The horrible service leave me no desire to come back !<br/>Me and my mom decided to go after we saw the hhigh rating on urbanspoon, as soon as we walked in, no one greeted us until I waved to get their attention . The younger waitress with long dark hair was rude and snoby . A little bit of thank you and your welcome wouldn't hurt , but we didn't get any of that for the entire night. The food wasn't bad , but we didn't get our rice almost 10 minutes after we got our dishes. I will definitely warn friends and family about this place.
Sweetlips
Went here last minute on a Friday night and they managed to fit us in. Restaurant looked fully booked and the staff were friendly and happy. We order veggie momo's, beeh himali Ghurka and the lamb cutlets.. sorry can't spell the Nepalese version :). All food came out quickly dispite how busy they were. I'm particularly a fan of the lamb cutlets, so flavoursome the Sweetlips will be back again and will bring some friends.

Favourite revisited. 2 of us dined here on monday night. First time for a couple of years at least when it used to be a regular favourite. We had Beef Himali gurkha,(hot and tender beef),Gobi matar,(mild cauli and peas), plain rice and puris. We have had these dishes before and they did not disappoint. The restaurant has had a bit of refurbishment including mirror lined walls which was good, friendly efficient service and all round a most enjoyable evening. With a 25% entertainment book discount it was as cheap as chips.<br/>A 9.5 out of ten from us.
Julie
Me and my husband are regular customers. Tonight we were here again our food came out late but we thoroughly enjoyed it and our food was great as usual! I commend the manager and the staff for coping with extreme pressure and some unhappy and very rudecustomers who were trying to provoke other customers to complain! The food and service is definitely worth coming back for :)
Lynadoll
Terrible. Have been to this restaurant a few times but not for about 12 months previously it was great food and service tonight was terrible in every way waited for about 1 hour to get our mealy we didn't even order entrees there was 11 at our table we had to keep asking for water when some meals came part of the meal was missing<br/>and the people that ordered the banquet had to ask for the desert <br/>when we complained we were told they were dealing with take away meals and that is why they were behind on serving the booked customers at tables !!!!<br/>I had the specialty goat meal which was so dry and no flavour and was microwaved which the manager confirmed had been done once I complained about the food and service etc i suggested they gave a discount on the bill which they did but this has not earned the return patronage of all of us I have never put a post on this site before but feel very disappointed about this restaurant they need to know all of this to improve their business

Very Enjoyable. We went here with friends a couple of Saturdays ago for the first time in a long time. We shared a mixture of dishes we selected from the menu and didn't find one that wasn't tasty. The service was good, we stayed until stumps and the prices were extremely good for Perth. We will be back.
Cibo
Very disappointing, bad service and terrible food. Never go back.
Dirk
When my husband returned from trekking in Nepal he was keen to try a Nepalese restaurant. We live local and thought we would give it a go. And we have never looked back. We love it. After a year we have still not progressed past the set menu!!!! You must get to know the lovely lady that owns it and she will always look after you.
King63
A Good Meal. We were a little worried after reading the negative reviews, seeing we hadn't been to the restaurant since last year, but the evening there was great. The staff were attentive and the food was good, especially the Momos with Chicken, Eggplant curry and the Dahl with spinach. The only problem we had was that the staff forgot our wine, but the restaurant was busy and full. We can recommend it.
Sophie Brennan-Jones
Go there for the veggie thali!. Totally love this place, especially their amazing veggie thali. For ~$30 you get a huge plate with mini silver dishes on it, stuffed with interesting tasty dishes. They're all great but you get the added bonus of free refills of your favourites. Yup, free refills. Also included is a great little rice pudding to finish your meal. Totally recommended.
Julie
Disappointing :(. After being highly recommended by a couple of friends we were looking forward to tasting some authentic Nepalese cuisine. Having never been to Nepal I can't judge if it was authentic but I can say I found the dishes bland and boring. The veg momos were quite nice for starters but the recommended "marinaded for 10 hours" chicken dish tasted like any nice piece of chicken done on your backyard BBQ. Not a hint of spice to be had. The pilau rice was very plain - a pale yellow colour, tasteless with a couple of peas thrown in for good measure. The cauliflower side dish was also disappointing - overcooked cauli and peas in a nondescript gravy. The puri was pretty good and the rice pudding average though could have been improved with more spices.<br/>Maybe we chose poorly but after this visit we're not keen to try again. <br/>On the upside, the food came quickly, the ambience was quite nice and the staff generally friendly and efficient.

Delicious!. Himali Gurkha is one of my favourites places to eat in the Applecross Restaurant hub. The flavours from each dish are unique and make my mouth water just thinking about it right now. Had the chicken and vegetable dumplings to start. This was followed by the Beef, King Prawns, Mixed Vegetables and rice. Sometimes when I have Indian food I can feel bloated after, however with this Nepalese cuisine I feel fine after. Looking forward to going back in the next couple of weeks. A great place for a first date. Until next time ... 8.5/10

What a great place. I went for a midweek birthday meal and the whole experience was just brilliant. We were made to feel very welcome, the food was fantastic and the atmosphere was wonderful. I almost forgot where I was while eating here, you just sort of drift into the ambiance. I can't say enough about Himali Gurkha and the wonderful people who work there.
Dazza
Yummy. Our first time dinner was really nice we had the 36.00 banquet which by the way included topups as you please..<br/>Great value, yummy food and pleasant service..would go back again.
Big Bob
Okay but lacking anything to lift it. We chose vegetarian Momos and lollipop chicken to start. The fried Momos were tastier than the steamed but all were fine. For mains we shared goat biryani, dried spiced beef cubes and a spinach and cheese dish. All were tasty dishes without being exceptional. The beef was probably best and the yoghurt accompaniment brought the flavours alive whilst balancing the dry texture. The rice pudding was sadly a disappointment and needed more cardamom and a creamier texture. <br/><br/>Internally the restaurant hasn't changed for more than a decade and is looking rather tired and in desperate need of some updating. Overall the experience of eating here was just a little sad. Nothing was done well apart from the service. I wanted to like the food or the night out but I couldn't quite do it.

ALWAYS GREAT. Nice little place hidden away in applecross. the people in here are so friendly! it was almost 10 oclock and they let my gf and i in, the chef personally came out and let us know what was still available to cook! such a great experience, to think he would still cook for us, especially when most places are closed by 9! have been here countless times now and never disappointed!
Endlessmastication
DELICIOUS. Delicious, fresh food, great menu, reasonable prices, fantastic service ALWAYS with a smile. Highly recommended
Julia
Love it. I have been twice in the past week, plus once before for takeaway. Most things I have had are really good. <br/><br/>The momos are a must have. I prefer the meat but vegetable is good too. We had a beef curry which was average, most of the vegetarian dishes are great though. The eggplant is the best.<br/><br/>This place is definitely worth a try.

Too long between visits. I returned here recently after not eating here for many years...the service and food was just as good as I remember. Will definitely be back sooner next time.

Great service. Steamed momo for appetisers was amazing. Beef, lamb and chicken mains were underwhelming though. Pleasant atmosphere throughout the night.

Fantastic + Friendly. Came here last week with my vegetarian friend, we decided to get a mixed platter ($30 each) which had rice, 2 dumplings and 5 curries plus a rice pudding dessert. All were delicious and had different flavours and textures. There was free re-fills of all the curries but to be honest we were too full after the first lot. I would recommend the platter when there are only 2-3 people dining. If more than it may be easier to order a number of dishes from the menu to share. Definitely the best Nepalese I've had in Perth.

Ewww. I would rather go to the one in vick park and inglewood i think its called Himalayan Nepalese restaurant and cafe...

I absolutely love this place. Been coming for years. We ordered the non-vegetarian Thali set which included the brilliantly simple momo dumplings with tomato pickle sauce, dahl-two varieties, seasoned vegetables, rice, soft bread and a Lamb chop. Yum! Always consistent with great service from owner Ozgur and her family of smiling staff. Much recommended. Always a great place to invite guests that are in town.. I've brought many friends here over the years. 5 Spoons!!

DISHONEST AND DISAPPOINTING. I visited Himali Gurkha last night with a friend. I was left disappointed and disgruntled. <br/><br/>I ordered the vegetarian set menu ($34) and my friend ordered the non-vegetrian ($36). I had quickly read the menu and noted the dishes which would be included. <br/><br/>When my platter arrived, I noticed that I had 4 main dishes [fried potato cubes, cooked spinach, dhal, cucumber curry(?)] + 1 dipping sauce + 2 crumbed balls, rice and roti. <br/><br/>The main dishes did not include Okra/lady's fingers as promised. There was no pickle either. I am guessing the "two seasonal vegetables" were the deep fried potato cubes and the very simple cooked spinach sitting in it's own broth. <br/><br/>My friend who ordered the non-vegetarian set menu had EVERYTHING that I had + A MIXED VEGETABLE DISH + meat filled dumplings instead of crumbed balls + meat curry + a BBQ meat. <br/><br/>When I questioned the waitress regarding the lack of the Lady's fingers dish, she simply replied with, "We don't have any Lady's fingers today" and implied that it has been replaced with something else - eeeerrr which ONE!?. At this point I was CERTAIN that Lady's fingers and at least one more dish was included in the menu. I didn't fuss at the time incase I was wrong and Lady's fingers was just an option. The way the waitress responded, it made me feel like the mistake was actually mine - so I didn't question any further. <br/><br/>Upon returning home, I looked up the menu online and it clearly stated that Lady's fingers is included:<br/><br/>"A combination of a variety of dishes comprising: Sabjee ko Burry(vegetable balls), Golbheda Ko Achar (tomato pickle), Ramtoriya Ko Tarkari,(Okra, Lady fingers), Sabjee ko Parikar (2 dishes of seasonal vegetables), Daal(mixed lentils), Kankro Ko Achar (cucumber pickle), Bhat (rice) puri(soft fried bread), Gulio Kuraharu (dessert)"<br/><br/>If nothing else, the vegetable dish my friend received should also have been included in my supposedly VEGETARIAN set menu. Furthermore, the crumbed VEGETABLE filled balls were just cheddar cheese balls, crumbed and deep fried. No vegetables whatsoever in sight! <br/><br/>What was done last night at Himali Gurkha was extremely disappointing and dishonest. The lasy owner was there and she would have known what was being served by her kitchen as she was also serving customers. If you do not have a certain dish you promise would be given, tell the customer at the time of ordering or before bringing out the plate. If not be thoughtful enough to provide them with equivalent replacements. <br/><br/>The meal was NOT worth $30. I was left extremely disappointed with the mains and the dishonest service. And don't even get me started on the stodgy rice pudding dessert. <br/><br/>if you order the set menu, make sure you check what is given to you.

Slow Waitress. Hi, I'm from Asia and l love Asian food, l have never been to Nepal but while in India l had tried Neplease food.<br/>The food in the restaurant was lovely, especially MOMO. However the waitress was very slow, she did not have confidence, seems nervous every time facing the customers. Interaction with the customer was close to none.

The Waiter has Left. 3 friends and I had lunch here today. The Momo's are YUM. My friend & I shared the Goat Pilaf and Stir Fried Vegetables, the other 2 had the $18 set menu. We were all impressed. Apparently it now has new owners, the same chef is in the kitchen and owner informed me the grumpy waiter is gone. I would recommend this place to friends.

Waiter needs to learn manners!. This is a restaurant we have been to a few times over the years, and decided to try it again after having been away from Perth for a while. Food was passable but not memorable, but what got us was the rude waiter. I was told off for bringing in a beer when I had honestly forgotten that it was BYO wine only. Others at the table asked the waiter if he could advise on the size of dishes and this elicited a look of disgust and a curt explanation of "small is small, large is large"! Plates were banged on the table, and likewise when the dishes arrived, they too were banged on the table. Unfortunately, for as long as this young tall waiter remains there, I would not recommend this place again to any of my overseas visitors.

Not sure now.. It had been a year since our first visit, which we loved. <br/>This time Himali Gurkha was disappointing. If it was our first visit, I don't think we'd go back. We will because now we're on 1 good visit and one average. <br/>We ordered different dishes to the ones we'd enjoyed last time, but that shouldn't matter. The goat in rice was dry and boring - imagine cubes of goat sranded in steamed basmati without much else. The other dish was okay. Our highlight was the eggplant 'side dish'. The bread we'd ordered never arrived and we had to chase it up. By the time it came, we'd nearly finished.<br/>Like their neighbouring cuisine, Indian, it can get much more expensive than it appears on the menu. Mains at about $20-$25, but then you have to add rice, bread, vegies etc and when you get the bill you've paid a lot for not that much really. It's the same in other Indian joints. It might be cheerful, ,but it ain't cheap.<br/>I'm not sure if HG are off their game, new owners, or we had a bad night or choice of dishes, but it wasn't the WOW! we'd experienced last time. We'll give it one more try.<br/><br/><br/>-----19 Feb, 2012-----<br/><br/>Napalese rocks!. Himali Gurkha's been there for years and it's one of those places that I'd always meant to get to, but hadn't. Why did I wait so long? The food is so fresh and tasty that we'll be back soon. Nothing we ordered was a "miss" and there's so much more to try. Yay!<br/>Service was good and food was prompt. Another plus.<br/><br/>Momos (vegetable dumplings) for starters were a must have. They are a Tibetan/Nepalese dish that I'd learned to make at a cooking class in Lhasa. Steamed delights - make sure you try them too. Himali's are spot on.<br/><br/>For mains we had the chef's recommendation grilled chicken and the mild lamb curry. The chicken was cooked-to-perfection moist and the lamb curry was slow-cooked tender with fresh ginger and coriander to give it a delightful lift of freshness. Rice, dhal, vegies and roti to accompany and we had so much food that despite our best efforts on the night, gave us a second-chance lunch the next day.<br/><br/>I've been to Kathmandu and enjoyed Nepalese food in Nepal. Himali Gurkha is the real deal. Loved it.

Never again. I have never written a restaurant review before but last night's visit to Himali Gurkha was so disappointing. The place looked cute and was packed. Service was slow and our food came very very late. The young man serving us was rude, non smiling, inefficient and badly trained. My food (lamb and spinach curry) was shocking, The lamb was tough and chewy and the sauce was repeated in a couple of the dishes we ordered! Finally we all got charged corkage even though only 3 out of 8 of us drank wine. I will never go here again, If you want great Nepalese food go to Vic Park!

Yum yum. This cute restaurant is quite loud, its byo wine, and the tasting platter (set menu) is such good value for money especially for the area ! you get so much food, and a nepalese dessert. They also have a vegetarian option.<br/><br/>Though they are a bit weird when you ask for you free refills, this places food is so tasty its worth it!<br/><br/>wanted something different for dinner, saw it on google maps, so happy we went : )

New favourite?. Good service. Great food. Had the Thali plate which was fantastic. Restaurant is byo so take a bottle of wine. As someone else said, very busy restaurant so not that quiet and intimate. Will definitely be back.
RAM LTD
Great food, great service. Not the place for a quiet romantic dinner as it was busy but still a lot of fun. Will definitely go back again. Enjoy.

Excellent Food, service below par. This restaurant has always served delicious food, but have yet to experience decent service. If you are happy to ignore the obvious dislike to westerners but want a excellent meal - go ahead, we do often.
Khrystyne S Cordi
Great food, crap service. So as with most of the previous reviews I say that the service is shoddy but the food more than makes up for it.<br/><br/>We had a table of 8, we all got the thali (set menu tasting plate). We also ordered 2 large servings of momo's but the waiter said 'You westerners always order too much' and only agreed to bring out one plate. Um slight racism aside, we finished all our food off and could definitely have done with the 2nd plate of momos. (I guess they have never heard of the italian way of life, which is eating a 2 plate minimum but I'll ignore this). Also flagging down a waiter for drinks is impossible. They scuttle between tables deliberately not making eye contact so you can't get their attention.<br/><br/>But the food, oh the food! TRY THE MOMO's! That is all. The thali plate was great, the beef curry was to die for. The vegetables were the tastiest I've ever tried. And the bread, the oily-crisp-yet-soft bread was perfect.<br/>I'll definitely be back, for the food, not the service. Try not to get served by the male waiter, the females were fine, but the guy was the one with the attitude.
Reddo
Excellent meals, great waiters. I love the momos and cheese balls. Deserts are authentic, but not to my taste.

Loved the food - can't wait to go again. On a quite, rainy Tuesday night we were origionally planning on having dinner in the italian restuarant across the road, but they had a function on so we found ourselves in Himali Gurkha - and thank god we did! <br/><br/>We just loved the food, its a beautiful mix of indian and asian flavours, without the greasy, slightly guilty feeling that comes from eating either of those cuisines. <br/><br/>The mix of spices and textures is fabulous and the menu is so extensive that we will be going back time and time again without having the same thing twice. The Momo's were a real highlight and the goat and rice was fab. <br/><br/>The restaurant itself is very small and cosy. The service - well as people have mentioned before, the service is a little on the lacking side I have to admit. But that doesn't bother me at all - I have had fabulous service before with very mediocre food - so give me mediocre service and fab food any day! Can't eat good service can you! <br/><br/>We are so happy that Italian restaurant was not taking customers that night, because it led us to our new favourite restaurant :)

Living just round the corner from this establishment, it had been on the list to try for quite sometime <br/><br/>From the phone call to the end of the evening...to say the service was mediocre would be complimentary...called to make a booking...the reply was 'yeh that's alright' and then *click* he hung up..took a few seconds to register no one was on the other end of the line as no booking details were taken nor was there a goodbye..hmm maybe they're not busy tonight but basic manners isn't really that hard...<br/><br/>When we arrived a table was pointed at to indicate which table to sit at...waiter was monotonous and uninterested..I think a zombie would have had more life...we had to ask for an included dessert with our meal to come out...if we hadn't I doubt it would have come out at all...<br/><br/>Food was actually very nice..faves were the momos and goat curry...being first time having Nepalese the myriad of choices on the menu made an interesting dining experience...restaurant also quite cosy...waiter somehow managed to make the place feel drab cold and unwelcoming... <br/><br/>With some enthusiastic, polite staff this place could be really special..sadly we wont be returning based on the service alone. Paying to be ignored and spoken to in cold monotone words is not my idea of a great night out. Thanks but no thanks.

So disappointed. I usually love the food here and often went.. i went 2 weeks ago with friends it was packed as usual, but the food was no where near as good as it usually is! both curry's we ordered had no flavor its like they had water them down and were swimming in a tasteless broth. When we said polity to the waitress we were just wondering if this is what the curry is meant to be like she said hmm it does look a little different to usual, so after trying it we said to a different waiter that it was a bit tasteless and watery and he talked over the top of us so rude, didn't apologies just said we ordered the wrong dish , when Ive had those curry's before. ill deff give Himali Gurkha another go maybe they were just having a "off " night.

Nice place to try. Ate here last night with a friend and I must say service was quick, food came out quick and all that was on my plate was very tastey. We choose the $36 tasting plate which included refills of everything but bbq. It was my first time eating this style food so to me I could only compare it to indian food without the extra sprices and cream/butter - which is a good thing! Only downside was the rice pudding at the end was less then average which was included in the deal. In summary worth the visit, food was clean the highlights for me was the roasted potatos - joy!
Pris
Good but has some hits and misses on menu (to me). I'm no Nepalese food expert but i think its not as spicy or creamy/thick as the Indian food we usually find in Perth. <br/><br/>Their lamb Kesuwa is good, their dhal and eggplant dish was good and hearty too. Their goat curry was tasty but tasted more like soup (isn't the thick saucy type of dish that I'd want to wipe dry with my Poori). <br/><br/>Their Poori is nice but extremely oily. Momo's are ok and fried cheese balls are ok. Their himali curry chicken was a big disappointment to me - flavours of chilli, ginger and watery sauce with chicken pieces didnt agree with me at all. It created a pool of soupy water beneath my rice (you may like that but I don't). <br/><br/>Service was good and accommodating (we had a big crowd of 10++), food came out efficiently with no glitches. <br/><br/>I would return to try the Okra dish but not too soon.

13th July 2015<br/><br/>Ordered takeaway from here last night for four of us.  The restaurant was packed when we collected our order and with good reason, the food is delicious.  Lots of fresh spices are used in all the dishes and the flavours are amazing.  Love this place and will book a table again soon. <br/><br/>***<br/><br/>Give it a go. Went here Saturday night with another couple who highly rate this restaurant. With the gold card, would have to agree that for the price, the meal is highly satisfactory.<br/><br/>A tiny place in the precinct at the end of the road (past Garden City), it was really busy and apparently usually is. We chose the tasting plate, that at $36 is very good value. Each portion (curry, lentils, momo's - tiny pork dumplings which can be either steamed or fried) is able to be refilled for free. With rice a skewer (the choice of beef, chicken or lamb is available) the taste is similar to that of Indian food but it packs a milder punch. <br/><br/>Dessert is also offered but all 4 of us were too stuffed to fit in another bite. <br/><br/>Service was prompt and efficient. With BYO on wine on offer, this place is a winner. Not somewhere I would frequent often, but would def. recommend it for a novelty factor and something different.

Made a booking for 2 for dinner around 7 and when we arrivedins they gave our table away and we were only 3 mins late. Poor service! They were also super busy and didn't take our order until very late. Other than that i love the food. It's lighter than Indian food as well. Would recommend the Lassis they were too milky and tasted weird. Def have had better lassis. Despite the service te food is very yummy, hence they r always full. So I highly recommend this place

Really tasty food. Nice and spicy but not overpowering. Try the goat curry with puri bread- excellent. Was packed on Friday night. Reservations are a good idea. Cashier could smile a bit.

Baaad service! They didnt have any goat or okra, two recommended dishes. We ordered lamb cutlets and a chiken dish. After over 40 min we asked about our dishes and they said the chicken was taking too long to cook (???) though the lamb was ready and sitting in the kitchen (!!!). I told them to cancel the chicken, so we didnt have much to eat. The lamb cutlets were a rip off at $24 for 4 inconsistently cooked pieces. We must have had a bad lot, because everyone around us seemed to be enjoying their meals. Admitedly the steamed momos were great. Was not impressed! Left extremely disappointed!

Fresh and well priced. Tasty, fresh and not too expensive. A local favourite

Love spice. Atmosphere:<br/>The restaurant is cosy and staff are friendly. A lovely restaurant which seems to be family-run. The crowd is mostly local with families, groups of friends and couples.<br/><br/>Service:<br/>We did not have a reservation - however, being a weekday the restaurant was half-full - and we were seated with little delay. Water was delivered to our table quickly with the menus and we had no trouble ordering. Entree and main dishes took average time.<br/><br/>Food:<br/>The steamed vegetarian momos were spicy and good! It was great to try something different as we didn't know what to expect from Nepalese food. For mains we had Beef Himali Gurkha (a chilli spiced beef dish served on a bed of thick, spicy sauce ) served with steam rice along with Khashi Ko Sekuwa (French lamb cutlets, specially marinated for 10 to 12 hrs in our spices and grilled on an open fire). The lamb was succulent and flavourful with a similar 'smokey' taste to Singaporean-Malay style satay but more spicy. I loved it! The beef curry was absolutely on fire with chillies visible throughout the sauce, one not for the faint-hearted. Extremely delectable.<br/><br/>Overall:<br/>Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will eat there again.

Very average. Went with a group of friends for dinner. It's a small place and the decor is old but that was too be expected. We ordered 1 entree (chicken momos) and 3 large dishes (lamb curry. chicken stirfry and spicy beef - can't remember the real names) between the five of us as we weren't that hungry. The waiter was very pushy in wanting us to get more dishes or order drinks which we didn't appreciate. The food was strange tasting. Maybe something I would expect from a home made meal but not from a restaurant. The prices were good (around $18 for medium, $20 for large) but not good when you consider the taste of the food. Will not be coming back here again.
Mark
The photos of the Nepalese royal family have long since disappeared from the walls, but the food is as great as ever. We've been coming here for years and have never been disappointed. If the menu seems overwhelming, try the thali (mixed plate) to sample a wide range of flavours.
NOMA
Typical Perth: not enjoyable and not value for money. Shared momos (ok), traditional chicken curry (bland and unpleasant), goat curry (ok), and a fish dish, which admittedly is as sensible to choose in a Nepali restaurant as in a central Australian road side joint, and about as nice as the fish you'd expect. Had puris (ok) and rice (below average). Paid around $50 per person (incl. a beer or two). Another companion had a very average Thali for $36. The service was acceptable for a busy night. How the place has an 80+ approval rating is mind buggling. I will not be coming back any time soon.
