Review Shadow Wine Bar - Perth

Zeglar “Zeg” Fergus
While this restaurant is called a wine bar, for us it was the food that was the standout feature. Efficient and knowledgeable staff, good service with an interesting menu. The food was great, well presented and served. We agreed that this was one of the best meals and dining experiences we have had for a while.

Atmosphere was great, lovely service, the food was amazing. So nice and fresh. I love mushroom arancini. The cheese on top was amazing.would love to go back.

Food was awesome came out fast, hot and delicious. Service staff were very friendly and great with making recommendations for our order. Service started out really efficient but towards the end of the night we needed to try and grab their attention to order drinks or to replenish the water. Would have understood if restaurant was super busy but it was the end of the night and only a few of us left . Other then that lil hiccup the experience as a whole was awesome, we had delicious food, Service was super friendly and atmosphere and architecture was amazing .

Our food and cocktails were lovely, service was great! The crunchy potatoes we ordered as a side were forgotten and came later than our main which wouldn’t have been an issue really except they were not worth the wait. They were just boring! Really needed some seasoning etc and since the rest of the meal was so great, they were pretty disappointing. Dessert menu was pretty limited so we opted for somewhere else for dessert. Would come back though :)

Incredible experience. Loved everything. Excellent wine recommendation, duck was amazing and the filet mignon didnt even need the knife but the carpaccio was stand out for me. Would absolutely recommend.

Love their wine list. Very nice food too!! Friendly staff and nice atmosphere, rather romantic.

The restaurant environment and staff were both so nice. Fantastic service. However, I am quite disappointed about the foods we ordered. Veal was so dry. The duck dish tasted like from can. Below value.

Had diner her with my best friend, great food, excellent service were had by all. The decor is chic & the space is beautiful. Great wine list, not overpriced. We both had a fabulous night out. Will definitely be back

The "Dine me" menu was exceptionally good. Every dish was noteworthy - beautifully presented, very flavourful and well executed. Service was about the best I've seen in Perth - thank you, Michael! Elegant, romantic dining room. I highly recommend!

Great place to eat before a show. Great staff. Delicious food that was easy to share in the small tapas like serves. A choice of sparkling or tap water free of charge. Waitress was knowledgeable on food and wine choices when asked for advice. I can't wait to go back to try more on the menu. Great setting.

We had a meal last night $120 pp, food was fantastic service was adequate on such a busy night. However we seemed to be sharing one plate between us it really hit home when are final meal was one scoop of ice cream with a little fruit to share. With a bottle of wine$309 fantastic food but needed a pizza walking back to hotel.

The food is exceptional and the staff attentive. Thanks to Chef Sue and her Crew for the best birthday meal and experience!

I had my bday dinner at Shadow. Great place, sensational dinner, wonderful staff and tasty wine. Enjoyed my night, thank you.

Date night! Wow hubby and I were soo impressed with our dinner and sides and sweets selection. Cooked to perfection and soo delicious . And the lovely and totally switched on waitress helped with my cocktail selection and together with the bartender and nailed it! Lovely ambiance. Totally worth checking out. Thankyou

The kitchen at Shadow is almost balletic. It's a seamless dance of girlboss beauty. The food is consistently beautiful. The service gorgeous. Perth could learn something from watching this crafted yet effortless dance. Make food art again. We promise to appreciate

Fantastic space, classy and trendy without being over done. Staff amazingly helpful and friendly and the food amazing, with a different selection from an ordinary menu. A must for brunch and then stay on for late lunch
Deirdre McQuillan
Superb menu and wine list. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Extremely accommodating even when they're busy.
Sharon Easton
Hippo vodka with grapefruit, Olives, haloumi, spaghettini with crab and feta/lotus. Each dish was quirky, fresh and totally delicious. Great staff, attentive without being obtrusive. A real treat. Well done

Fabulous food and the biggest wine selection I've ever seen!! Super friendly staff with great wine knowledge too!
Donna Lea Joncevski

Always great service. Food stunning. Great selection of wines. The tap beer was special. I go here a bit. It's close to the train station. Recommended.

Had a very nice experience on Sunday lunch, the decor was beautiful, service was great an very friendly staff. Would highly recommend it to people who are into wine. Thanks Shadow team! Keep it up

Another great night at the Shadow. We had the Feed Me menu for eight and the food was awesome. Good portions and good value. No complaints on our table and wines at reasonable prices. Service was attentive and efficient.
Alan
I won’t comment on the food and suggest reading other reviews for getting an idea about the food. To me dinning out is an experience and it starts with the service. My experience was a disaster from the moment that I walked in. May be I was unlucky but never set foot in this establishment again. The waiter was extremely rude and even if they serve the best food, it is a no for me.
Thien
A nice place to have lunch with a group of friends. The food is pretty average. Table service only so therefore you can't buy drinks over the counter.
HungryHippo122
The perfect spot for an intimate dining experience. Try the lamb... mouthwatering.

Shadow Wine Bar is one of the new generation of venues that laughs in the face of the idea that hotel bars and restaurants have to be sub par.
Killroy
Wow! New menu. 5 star chef! The BEST Gnocchi we have tasted. Soft, smooth and fragrant. Crab Spaghettini was superb. My preference is a tad more chilli, but otherwise faultless. The Tart Tarin dessert exceeded expectations. Great balance of flavour with a hint of Almond. Service very good, attentive and not intrusive. Absolutely worth a visit!
Tam P
Very classic elegant decor, which attracted mostly couples and groups of young women. The food was lovely, although a bit under-seasoned. The broccoli with chilli and garlic was absolutely beautiful. The staff were friendly and not at all pushy or annoying

This place has ambiance, service and oh the food! (& Wine)

The extensive wine list here is easily navigated by asking for a suggestion - the staff are incredibly cheerful, patient and helpful. I can totally recommend the Spanish Orange wine though.

Having been here a few times we have navigated a good portion of the menu. The oysters were just great and steak cooked to perfection. The one item that we will sometimes just drop in for a coffee with is the Pear Tarte Tatin.

This place ticks all the boxes.
Ben Lee Kong
On top of those perfect oysters, across the table we tried the cheese puff, and the meatball, plus the roasted beetroot with barley. They were all good to great. The beetroot was soft and sweet from the roasting, but the barley added strong texture, and the yoghurt was just right to add some creaminess.

For mains, Sher and I both chose the spaghettini with crab, capers, lemon, and a light dose of chilli. The surprise was homemade spaghettini which is difficult to achieve with the right firmness, but this pasta was excellent without being absolutely perfect. The sauce made good use of all the ingredients in balanced proportions, though you can never have too much crab.

Staff are excellent and very helpful.

We came for the Talisman wine tasting and stayed for a late lunch.

Wow. My lady had the crab spaghettini which was very tasty with a nice kick.

I had the scotch fillet as the lamb wasn’t available. The jus is phenomenal! Wow. Just wow.

Coupled with a Taliaman 2009 Cabernet Malbec - just a gastronomic delight.

Now for desert ...

Wow. I had the pear with pastry and caramel and ice cream- yum. So delicate and sweet but not over sweet.

My lady’s plum with Mascapone and crumble was really tasty. The plums were soaked in something and it worked really well.

Great place.

BTW it has awesome wines too.
Sha30m
Lovely lovely place - beautiful wines and food. We had the ceviche, the arancini, bread, calamari, gnocchi and haloumi. Gnocchi to die for, almost as good as our nonna's. 😊

Came here between fringe festival shows for a quick bite. Service quick and ambience not bad, food also fantastic. Would go back to try other menu items.

The food is very tasty here, cannot fault that. Everything was cooked really well with interesting flavours.
But the portions are so tiny we found ourselves at Superstar Waffles to fill the gap in our stomachs. It's just not worth the cost to come here.
It's a "moonlit" venue so very romantic and the service is of "fine dining" standard.

The shadow wine bar is an intimate bar, with low lit candles and thousands of various wine bottles tracing the walls as they glisten in the shadows. While the maron was flawless and the croquets were the best I’ve ever tried; we felt invisible to the staff and after asking twice for every individual condiment, we decided to go somewhere else for mains. However, all the other servers seemed to be doing an outstanding job so I have no doubt that future visits will be far more enjoyable.
Kitty
Food reminded me of bland airplane food. (Had the lamb rump/carrot basil salad)
Just come for the wine selection.
But I’m definitely not coming back.

Busy bar, good choice menu, dim lighting ambience, romantic for dating and reasonable price. Average service.
We go with dine me menu $65 per person.
Veal carpaccio, Beetroot & avo, Haloumi & honey, Calamari & pangrattato to start......
Pumpkin agnolotti, Scotch fillet
Pear tarte tatin, The End. Good food. Recommended!

Went for drinks and dinner with a couple of friends. We were impressed with how busy the place was on a Tuesday night! We liked that there was a large range of wines available by the glass, including some unusual varietals. We ordered a few glasses each, but actually would have ordered a bottle but initially were given a drinks menu which listed only wines by the glass. There were good options at all price points though, with glasses ranging from under $10 to $15 or so.
For food, we chose the $65 "Dine Me" option. We got beef carpaccio, salmon and creme fraiche, squid, beetroot and avocado salad, and a grilled honey halloumi for the shared first course, then as mains we had pumpkin ravioli (the agreed highlight), steak with potatoes and silverbeet, and a side of broccolini. Dessert was a chocolate brownie with mint ice cream, and an orange creme brûlée with cream.
All of the food was delicious, but we thought it was a little overpriced. Some bread and olives to start would have rounded things out.
Service was friendly and attentive.

We've been there for a little life celebration on a sunday afternoon! The food was delicious and they have a wide range of wine. I just wish the dish were a little bigger for the price... good customer service though

Was currious about this place as the reviews on zomato and google differed abit. The ambiance was nice and worthy of the word shadow in its name.

Unfortunately we felt the food was over priced and over seasoned. The $18 cocktails the gf and her friend ordered were tiny. Had an american pale ale myself that came out of a can.

Not a place for dinner, sadly we didnt get into the wines, possibly where it is all at?

Cannot fault Shadow, wine list is impeccable, the space is gorgeous, the food is beautiful. Sue the head chef is from Melbourne with a European background and an absolute gift to Perth.
Have been here for special dinners and just for a quick drink never disappointed, the staff are sweet and knowledgeable. Nothing bad to say about Shadow, and the fact that its packed every weekend is evidence enough.

🥃🍷🍽we all like the peal tart tatin with ice cream, also Shark bay crab pasta. The environment is really nice. We have a good time in there.
Marcus
Dined early on a Saturday night.
Tables are too close together.
People were using phones to read the menu.
Service from Michael was great. Service from the others was not.
Lamb osso bucco which was small and needed lots of salt to enhance the flavour.
Crab spaghettini had too many capers overpowering the delicate crab - didn't finish it.
Cheese platter and matched dessert wines were really good.
Said they'd adjust the bill for the crab. They didn't. I'm not one to remind them and embarrass my date so I'll let you know instead.
Wont be back.

This is a little gem in the middle of the Northbridge area. The restaurant is underneath the Alex Hotel. We chose the Dine with Me option from the menu - which is a three course meal chosen on the day by the chef/kitchen. We were delighted by the food that was served and enjoyed each portion of it. We were both left moreish by the 'Pumpkin and goat cheese agnolotti, hazelnut picada' which reminded me of lemon curd. We also enjoyed the recommended Pear tarte tatin for dessert.

Such a pity, Shadow Bar is stylish and beautifully laid out but it stops there. Service was almost non existent and we had to keep calling for service. Food totally over priced for what you get and not that good. Really pretty average.
Edward Schweitzer
Just came here for a light night drink, didn't eat. Wine list great, we chose a Unico Zelo Fiano and a Jura and both were superb and well priced. Loved the ambiance, staff were friendly. Would like to come back and eat next time I'm out west.
Marina Cortvriendt
It's a wine apero bar but for the non alcohol drinker who accompanies the wine friends: $7 for a small Coke. Seven $! That is not business that is theft!
Gabrielle Trenbath
Don't be fooled by the outside. it looks like a sad old building from the street level but inside it is swankie and is as awesome as any bar in London, Melbourne or Sydney!!!

Everything we had was absolutely delicious! We started off with some cheese puffs and haloumi (we love cheese) based on a neighboring table's recommendation. Our mains were the duck leg and the spanner crab pasta, both of these dishes were full of flavour. For dessert we ordered the pear tarte tatin and basically licked the plate. Definitely try this place out if you're in the mood for some mod oz, great atmosphere and delicious wine.
We ordered salumi boards and little plates to enjoy with our wine it was Wa great.
Live the atmosphere of the restaurant.
Sophia provided great service

I had a 50th birthday dinner here when I visited. The food was chosen by my friend and it was tasty. They did struggle a little though with all meals coming out at once, but I'm sure they're on top of it due to the large party. Will be back. Recommend visiting if it's a special occasion as it is quite romantic.

I have dined at Shadow Wine Bar on numerous occasions and always found the food and service excellent, so I suggested to a group of friends who only catch up 2 or 3 times a year that we meet at Shadow. When making the booking, the manager (Sally) suggested we use the private dining room as it would be more conducive to our needs (she was right). On arrival we ordered our traditional “bubbles” and then after listening to everyone’s differing preferences of drinks, Sally (who was also our waitress) suggested ones to suit all our tastes (she was right again!). The food was explained, arrived in a timely manner, and everyone agreed was exceptional (thank you Sue). The crab spaghettini was amazing and has ruined pasta dishes for me! I have recommended Shadow to all my friends, particularly for a special occasion, and would recommend it to everyone who reads this. I look forward to many future visits and being looked after by Sally and her team.

Shadow Wine Bar is our favourite restaurant. The food is always excellent, particularly (in my case) the veal carpaccio, and is less expensive than other comparable restaurants, where the food isn’t as good. There is an extensive wine list, which includes white wines other than sauvignon blanc, including a selection of chardonnays which includes a couple of the creamy/buttery style we prefer, and our preferred red wine.

The manager Sally and her staff always provide excellent and friendly service. As a bonus, its location a few minutes’ walk from the train station means we don’t have to drive.

We booked a table for two on a Saturday evening and arrived a bit early and were seated in a booth. I loved the feel of the place - the booth, the noise level which was busy but easy to hear each other talk, the dim lighting. It reminded me a bit of places in NYC. Hubby ordered a negroni and a bottle of Proscecco for us to share. We asked our friendly, helpful waitress if we could order some items of the bar menu and she said no problem. So we shared the croquettes, chorizo and haloumi. I wasn't a fan of the honey haloumi but Scott enjoyed it. We waited a little bit as wanted to enjoy a leisurely dinner and then ordered a couple of small plates - carpaccio and cerviche. Both simple dishes and tasty. We described what sort of red wine we enjoy and our waitress made a couple of recommendations and we asked for tastings and one was available as also available by the glass. We also decided on the cheese platter where you select 3 different cheeses and requested the raisins be replaced with olives, and they happily obliged. I really like this place.

We came on a Friday evening and we're glad we booked because it was pretty busy! Great atmosphere but not too loud that you couldn't hold a conversation. We ordered a mix of bar snacks: calamari, haloumi with honey, buffalo mozzarella, bread and dip(s), chorizo and the crab spaghetti with tomato, lemon and capers off the main menu all to share.

Service was pretty slow, our booking was 6:30pm and we weren't served our last dish until about 8:30pm.

Food was so-so. Apart from the haloumi with honey which was amazing, I don't think I would order anything I ate again. The $10 serve of bread and dip(s) was tiny. I am pretty sure it said dipS plural but we just got hummus and 3 slices of bread. They said we could have more bread if we liked but why don't they just put it on a bigger plate to begin with?

After flagging down a waiter for the dessert menu, we chose tiramisu and pear tart tartin. Pastry was nice and buttery but you couldnt taste the pears over the sickly sweet caramel.

I would come back here for a drink because I like the vibe.

Used to really love this place, was my favourite go to. But after the terrible service I received today I won't be racing back. Told to sit wherever. Not 1 smile. Spilt wine when pouring glass. Gave still water when asked for sparkling. Was more interested in chatting to friend/colleague? Than serving us. And then the portion sizes. I know red emperor is expensive but $40 for 3 little pieces and 6 asparagus spears is ridiculous. Was still hungry so ordered the entree of calamari. Was tough. Pangrattato on top not great. Partner had a selection of bar snacks and was happy enough with his choices. But the main thing is service. She may have been having a bad day but I'm sure smiling once is a while wouldn't kill her. Won't be back in a hurry.

Steak has good flavoured sauce thin cut but cooked tender. Peach dessert was sensational. Good range of reds. Must c is kinda funky for the environment, jazz would be even better.

My friends and I had a terrible experience here last night. We arrived for a pre dinner drink and were not even greeted by a very rude sulky waitress. We then ordered 3 wine and 3 oysters. Wine came in the smallest portions I've ever seen (for $13 per glass!) and after 20minutes, another entree arrived. Not the oysters we had ordered. Without even an apology, 5 minutes later we cancelled our oysters, only for them to arrive immediately after and the waitress turn around and take them back. No apology, no bill discount. Worst service I have experienced in a long time- will not be back.

Came here for a quiet Sunday dinner with 2 girlfriends and was pleasantly surprised. Service was professional and attentive, decor and ambience is sophisticated but not overdone. Most importantly, the food was very tasty (we ordered hiramasa ceviche, blue spot emperor, crab spaghettini, crumbed cuttlefish, grilled haloumi and crispy potatoes) all of which were fresh and delicious. Add to this a great wine and drinks selection, definitely worth a visit.
Dan The Cake Man
I came here for an early lunch and was quickly shown a table near the window by the friendly waitress. It’s a great place with high ceilings and modern chic feel. They have lots of interesting wines available. I ordered the Hiramasa ceviche with green chilli vinegar for entrée, Shark bay crab spaghettini for mains, and the mille-feuille strawberries for dessert. My waitress recommended an excellent paired wines for my entrée/main and my dessert; spot on. All the dishes were wonderfully presented and were excellent in flavour; cooked to perfection. The service was attentive and friendly, and the ambience was also spot on. Love this place and will try their brunch menu soon.

Everything was consistently average.
- Service
- Hour long wait for food
- Smaller than anticipated serving sizes
- Nothing special
- Food wasn't full of flavour
- More food was needed afterwards

Had dinner with some friends here. Unfortunately the service was so bad we would never come back. We were ignored and had to wave the staff to take our orders and the restaurant was not even busy. Our glasses were never topped up and eventually we gave up and got up to get the bottle ourself. As this was our first time at the restaurant, we decided that we wanted to get a taste of all the dishes so we ordered quite a few small plates and mains to share between the six of us. As we were being served one of the mains we overheard the waitresses conversation. Waitress 1: "Who is this main for?" 2nd waitress: "Place it on the middle table as they are sharing" Waitress 1 scowls: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?" The conversation was so loud that we all stopped mid conversation. Wow we couldn't believe how rude and pretentious this waitress was as she dumped the plate onto our table and said with a distateful remark "heres your dish for SHARING". How dare she judge a customer on what they ordered and secondly let them over hear your dissatisfaction whilst serving. I can understand maybe if they were some renowned Michelin star restaurant but they were not. No wonder the reviews about the service were so bad. I'm surprised management of this restaurant has not given this lady a warning or let go as she is probably toxic and detrimental to the success of this restaurant.
Jem
Good wine list and average food. The service was so bad. I get better service at my local take away coffee shop and the local pub. We won't be returning. Shadow Bar a little tip - teach your staff to smile!
Foodie
Went for dinner. My advice is to bring lots of money otherwise eat before you go. The servings were way too tiny but came with a huge price tag. Food was delicious but won't go back sorry.

Came in for some small plates and wahn on a Saturday Afternoon. Service was initially spectacular, I'm thinking we were initially served by the maitre'd. After that it was full 1000 yard stare spec. I hate having to wave in a restaurant to get noticed. The entrees were on the small and expensive side for what was delivered. The food was good, with the chorizitos being the best thing I ate. Plenty of wine options by the glass. It is a beautiful room and you can certainly do a lot worse in this neck of the woods.
Serena
We came here late on a Saturday night in search of cheese and dessert. We ordered the cheese board, pear tart tartine, and creme caramel. Desserts were nice but nothing to write home about, presentation was very average. Cheese board included all the usual suspects. Will go back to try the food, but not really expecting out of the world things based on what we sampled
Renato
Chic and classy atmosphere with professional service and great food. Shadow is very much like a Melbourne restaurant, which works so well. The FOD (pink snapper fillet, celeriac purée) was divine and too was the crab spaghetti. The tarte tartin for dessert was drop dead amazing.

**BOTTOM LINE: A FEW GLITCHES BUT RECOMMENDED**
Dinner & drinks Wed night from 6:30pm.
Overall great ambience & enthusiastic staff, would try again food was TASTY but points lost for:
> entrees/smalls are ridiculously small portions at excessive prices (maybe ok if entree for one but my dining protocol is sharing everything with all in effort to try everything)
> bread also super small
> salt & pepper/Parmesan not brought to table
> wait-staff (3 ladies) were great once you got their attention but that took ages - need more staff on floor
> small selection of sweets and not very imaginative tho tiramisu was extra good

Good place to go just for some drinks too and spot, decor etc was cool. Lighting just right equally good for dinnet and/or drinks with friends as for 'date' night or first meeting without committing to entire meal. Choice of tables, booths at perimeter and high bar bench type seating.

No reason not to try it and in time the glitches I mention would no doubt be ironed out. Highlight was waitstaff with humour and right attitude for hospitality. 👌
Limatango
This place deserves more than its current 3.5 rating. Service was exceptional, the wine list was really impressive, food was all delicious and the space itself is beautiful.
I'm taking half a point off for the price of the sparkling water...$18 for 3 people is too much.
Matt Beor
Really nice setting, but food was nothing to rave about considering how expensive it was (
I_hate_ MasterChef
A great restaurant and bar. Ate there last night 10Jul16. Service was excellent and food was great. Servings are not large so it's easy to rack up a big bill if you're hungry. Wine list excellent; staff decanted the wine for us at the table.

A great place to stop for a glass of wine
& cheese , the snacks are delicious this time
had the haloumi with honey $10
Glass wine 16 / 100mls but at near $100 a btl is still good value..
Have had lunch here also while back but was
fresh oysters & nice piece of fish..
Service always...

Had my birthday here and have never received such horrible service. I have been to many places in Perth, even the busiest of them all but this place needs new staff.
The place itself is amazing, the food is great however the inexperienced staff ruin the restaurant. They ruined my birthday surprise and then made a huge issue out of it. All 10 of my friends won't be visiting this place any time soon which is a shame because the interior is fantastic.
Foodrinkperth
Called in wishing to sample some of the wines, actually very disappointing compared to other small bars nearby. Staff were friendly and we were seated promptly with water provided, however we waited for ages to be asked what we would like not to mention even longer for the 3 drinks to come! We had a restaurant booking and had left plenty of time however due to slow service we had to drink and depart a bit too quickly for my liking. My other criticism was the music really loud and certainly not an ambient level. Won't be rushing back .....
Matt
Awesome selection of delicious small plates accompanied by a fantastic selection of wines. Knowledgable staff and great attention to detail make this a consistently great place to indulge.

Came in a group of 6 on a friday night. Service is sooo slow.. They were busy but waited WELL over an hour for food to come. Gnocchi was actually pretty good (i love goats cheese so im biased) but minus points for unreasonable wait time. Staff are friendly enough though. Crab spaghettini lacked flavour and crab. Other dishes unmemorable and tiny. Portion sizes seem to be for babies and dwarves, which would have been okay if not ravenous from waiting, or if it were tasty enough to make up for it. A maccas run was required.

Gnocchi - 7.5/10, Spaghetti 1/10, Service 6/10, Wait time - unbelievable/10

Had an amazing time at Shadow, we had dinner already so we just ordered a bottle Pinot gras recommended by friendly staff. We had two oysters , and halloumi cheese . It tastes so Yummy with honey comb on top of the cheese, perfect with wine. The atmosphere was absolutely beautiful, staffs were very attentive, friendly. Will come back next time :)

Came here for a special occasion dinner recently and it was perfect. We shared our entree and mains which seemed to work well with their menu. For entree we ordered the haloumi with sesame seeds and honey and grilled chorizitos which were great and not too big or too small for an entree. Mains were the gnocchi with parmesan and the grilled calamari - both were so nice. After dinner we shared the cheese plate - again, really good. There wasn't anything we ordered that we didn't love, and it gave me the impression that their whole menu would be delicious. The interior of the place is really cool and the waitress was also lovely. We will definitely come back!

This was the first time I visited this place. Came with a group of friends. Great place with extensive wine list and great food to match. The ambience of this place thoroughly matched with wine and food. Service is great too. Reservations can be made or you can walk in.
Christina
Stopped in here for a quick bite and was stunned by the food. I don't normally like ordering the same as my dining partner but we both had a craving for seafood pasta so chose the shark bay crab spaghettini. I was a bit apprehensive as I'm not the biggest fan of capers, but this was the most delicious pasta I can remember having in a long time. Eye-rolling, noise-makingly good. Other pros: friendly staff, great wine list, prompt service.

We had a lovely long relaxing Monday lunch yesterday with champagne, a fantastic white burgundy and 4 courses which we shared. So many delicious wines to choose from and lots of crazy Jura whites which I love. Chat to the staff and you will drink well!

This is a very trendy restaurant which I walk past regularly but never tried before. It has great street appeal and we decided to give it a go. No reservation just as a walk up on a Saturday night. The place was packed but they happily sat us at the bar. The building is impressive, big open spaces well decorated with amazing lighting. The music is funky and the service is young, fresh and prompt. The wine selection is broad as you would expect in a wine bar. The food is average to above average but overall poor value for money. Zamato say the average cost is $100 for 2. It cost us twice that for entrees, main and an average bottle of wine. No a la Carte veges and no dessert.

The highlights were the prosciutto entree, the mussels and cockles main - the broth was perfect- and the banded snapper main that was cooked to perfection. The lowlights: king prawns at $10 each (yep that's $10 PER prawn). My wife's prawn was stringy and overlooked. Mine was fine. The crab on a crisp with aioli, well it was a single bite crisp with about two teaspoons of shredded crab and a few drops of dressing. Nothing special except for the price. $7. Each. Great taste but come on this pricing is nuts. The mains were good as I said before but if you want veges well that'll cost you extra. Overall portion sizes were small. Mains are entree sized and the entrees we chose are nothing more than a bite sized hors d'oeuvre. We spent more than $200 and didn't even have dessert. For that price I would expect far far better portion sizes and overall quality. Will not be returning. For this price in Perth you can find better. Bye bye Shadow Wine Bar and judging by the busy premises they won't miss us.

My partner & I were at a loose end after finding our fav La Cholita packed on Friday night. We decided to wonder around Northbridge to find something new.. I'm so glad we stumbled across the Shadow wine bar. It was also packed, however they had room to squeeze us in..
We decided to try a number of their small plates to get a feel for the food.. Delicious morsels of food followed with a lovely 1/2 carafe of full bodied red to wash it down with.
All in all it was very enjoyable.. The atmosphere was great, and whilst it was packed, the acoustics had been well thought out so we didn't feel we were competing with the whole restaurant for conversation.
It was great, we will be back!

Had a great night with special friends. Wine list great and we picked a great Albarino and a great Nebbiolo.
I had food envy because most of our table chose the angel hair pasta which, based on their enthusiasm for it, must have been great.
I had the steak. Ordered medium rare. It was overcooked. So it arrived medium.
Service was awesome. Our waiter mellowed make it a top night.

Shadow Wine Bar and Dining Room. Interior design and fit out is great with high ceilings. Went with a group of 6 and had a splendid time. Some hic cup with the wine...but management fixed it and bought us a new bottle. Food was nice for fine dining. Service was good and attentive - well done. Worth going back as a couple or group.

Hands down one of the best, can not fault a thing, except the fly that flew past.
Sensational service, fresh food and a wine list that doesn't take advantage of my pocket, thanks guys i had a great Sunday lunch with my wife.

Delicious food, friendly service and not rushed. All very welcome in an industry which thrives on churning covers and pushing you out the door. The confit duck was delicious as was the steak. The waiters know their wine and offer up delightful pairings that marry well with your meal. All in all a beautiful venue for dinner.

Very average food for a premium price. The service was just ok but a bit slow.
It's nice to go for a drink but I won't be going back for a meal.
The interior is beautifully done up. The service was attentive without being overbearing, she was very helpful in suggesting a wine (which was lovely). The meal was delicious. I came here with a friend I haven't seen in a long time, it was a good evening. We chatted for quite awhile taking our time, everything was splendid we weren't made to feel rushed. The waitress turned perfectly on time as we finished the last sip of our glasses of wine. Had scallops, halloumi for starters and a light main tabbouleh sort. Everything was simple, fresh and cooked to perfection. ---
Had a beautiful brunch here. Bloody Mary was one of the best I've had! Cacio e pepe was mouth-wateringly good! Sauce wasn't too heavy, just right. Pancetta, thinly sliced mushrooms, parmesan with perfectly cooked fresh pasta was the perfect cure to a hangover. The croc madame was lovely, rich comfort food and ricotta doughnuts topped off a beautiful brunch. The prices were very modest for the quality of food. 👍🏼

Okay, so the title is totally misleading, it was not a light dinner so much as a feast. Miss. C and I planned this dinner four weeks in advance, so when the day arrived I just couldn't wait to finish work and head straight to the Shadow Bar. I haven't seen the Shadow Bar before and I missed it twice until I noticed the subtle sign outside the door. The vibe of the the Shadow Bar was very sophisticated and I instantly felt underdressed! But, all was forgotten once we were seated. It turns out Miss. C have been here before, so tonight she was our menu expert!

I went to Shadow Wine Bar with a group of friends and we had a great night. The pasta was good, ditto the wine and the haloumi starter was tasty. That much said, although there's nothing I can fault there was nothing that blew me away either. The atmosphere, food and service was all good but not spectacular. I'd go again if I was in the area or someone else suggested it but I won't be rushing back.

A rare night out for us as we had our daughter babysat left a slight feeling of disappointment - Portions are too small, we left hungry, fullstop! In fairness, the food was nice, cooked well, albeit slightly predicable and the dining space had a great atmosphere.
I had driven past and had seen Shadow Wine Bar from William street reminiscing about the days we used to try new places all the time, so jumped at the opportunity to go. Upon arrival I ordered a glass of bubbles, which was flat, you could see that it was flat without having to try it, however the lady serving us asked me to taste it. I did and advised her again politely it was flat. Without a problem she bought out a fresh bottle and poured me a fresh glass. We ordered cheese puffs, bruschetta, and pork cheeks as a starter...they were TINY!! I resented paying $5 for one cheese puff that is about the size of a marble. The rest of the evening was fine, my husband had the Duck, I had the Lamb both were nice, but not amazing. I am happy to have tried it, but probably wont return.

Tuesday 15th December

Went for a girly lunch we did commit a cardinal sin and not drink any wine, but the gin selection was solid, so we all had G&T's. Service was friendly and helpful we just went for charcuterie olives and cheese. Our waitress suggested we take the cheese offer on the dessert menu which was 3 for $26 which gave more selection at a cheaper price. Which really is good service as we wouldn't have known. Would definitely recommend and would definitely go back to try the wine.

Shadow Wine Bar definitely lived up to expectations, and was a worthy choice for our anniversary dinner. The food was almost uniformly excellent, from the wonderfully flavoursome Cicchetti, mains that were classical while still very much on-trend, and a truly superlative Tarte Tatin. The wine list and Aperitifs were just as strong, with the ability to by a wide variety of wines by the carafe a particularly impressive element that we hope to see become a much copied trend. Accompanied by a great soundtrack, stylish surrounds and service that was both friendly and professional, Shadow Wine Bar is an worthy and distinctive addition to Perth's every growing restaurant scene.

Booked table for 8 but didn't get seated until 8.20! Starters were on the small side but all yummy especially the chorizo. Had to wait nearly an hour for main course but when it arrived it was worth the wait. Not a place to go if you are in a rush or starving. But a beautiful venue perfect for a leisurely meal with friends.

The lemon crisp was I think the main highlight of the night!!! Both my partner and I were amazed at how good it tasted even tho it was kinda small :/ we felt the environment could've been a little nicer, but going there on a Monday night gave us privacy :) would totally recommend the pasta as well- perfectly cooked, with a yummy tangy lemon sauce. My partner felt the lemon was slightly overpowering but I felt it was perfect. Highly recommend the crab and pasta! The cauliflower dish was alright but nothing compared to the other 2! Sticky pork was nothing fantastic. Good wine selection!

Booked a table on Monday night for my birthday for 3 people. We arrived and were seated in a booth, very happy. The venue is awesome, loved it so much. The food portions are small but I had the gnocchi for main and it was surprisingly filling and totally delicious. I had the crab and pork cheek starter which were great and finally the pear tart tatin for dessert. The price is pretty reasonable and so far this is my favourite place in Perth. The venue, the service, the food, all awesome.

From the outside it looks like a nice classy restaurant that you might put on a collar and maybe even a tie and jacket to enjoy a high standard of dining and service. Looks can be deceiving!

The good points really start and stop with the appearance of this place...

We waited just shy of 10minutes before even being acknowledged - flatly ignored by the many staff lingering about the doorway.

When finally attended to, the waitress seemed completely incapable any politeness. They have clearly chosen to hire as cheaply as possible.

We waited an hour for our table despite having a booking.

The music made me feel as though we'd walked into The Mustang bar by accident!

NOT the experience we'd hoped for!

It was a shockingly cheap experience - and I'm not talking about the bill!

For the money we paid, I feel badly cheated.

When my long time good friend said she made a dinner reservation at Shadow Wine Bar on a Saturday night I didn't know what to expect and didn't have high expectations. Well I'm glad that's all changed because I had an such an amazing dining experience at Shadow!

So to the food review...
For entrees we shared:
- The Braised beef cheeks on crostini $7 each. The beef cheeks was tender and soft but it wasn't amazing and I honestly didn't think it was worth $7 each! They were tiny! Gone in one mouthful.
- The Veal carpaccio with truffle mustard dressing $22 was delicious! Hands down I would order this again as the truffle mustard dressing just made everything pop in your mouth. Veal was very thinly sliced and was very fresh.

Drinks:
- A bottle of Montevecchio Moscato $40-50 (I forgot the price). Moscato's are generally sweet so this one is no exception but it tasted great and was so easy to drink that I am on a lookout for this brand in my local liquor store! I highly recommended this moscato especially as we are approaching summer.

For mains:
- Boyanup Brook flat iron steak with beetroot $38. Both my friend and I got this dish and both our steaks were cooked perfectly at medium rare. Honestly the steak melted in your mouth and the beetroot and dark rich wine sauce just made this dish so damn good. I love a good streak and this dish was my highlight of the night! I highly recommend the steak if your dining at Shadow!
- Shark bay crab spaghetti with capers, lemon, tomato and chilli $32. My friend loves citrus and she enjoyed this dish very much. I think the portion size looked on the small side for a main course dish. Having a taste of her dish thought it was really good and well balanced that wasn't overpowered by the lemon.

For dessert (my favorite part), we shared (all $14):
- The Pear tartine. This is probably my second highlight of the night! The pastry was soft and flaky. The pear tartine and ice cream made every mouthful was so enjoyable!
- Strawberry jelly, lemon curd and pistachio sponge. Interesting concept and tasted really good. Probably not the easiest dish to share as it was in a glass cup but I loved the lemon curd with the strawberry jelly. Very refreshing.
- Mascarpone cream cheesecake and berries. This probably was my least favorite dessert out of the three. It was nice but it wasn't very exciting, nothing really stood out about this dessert to be honest and I probably wouldn't get this dish again.
Overall my only negative comment about dessert was that everything was tiny! I felt like I just wanted more even through my friends and I shared the dishes I don't think I would have been satisfied even if I had a whole dish for myself!

Overall I had a great time dining at Shadow from the first step inside you hear soft jazz playing in the background and you appreciate the lovely contrasting black and white decor throughout the restaurant. Service was very professional as we were promptly shown to our table and had friendly service by two waitresses throughout the night.

I do have to mention that Alex Hotel did a great job renovating this heritage building.

Such a long review but I would definitely be dining at Shadow again soon!

Booked two weeks in advance for an 8pm Saturday night dinner seating for two. I made special mention that it was my partners birthday dinner which seemed to be of little to no importance to whomever I made the booking with..
Arrived a little late at the restaurant only to be left standing in the doorway for more than five minutes while at least six waitstaff walked by and did not even acknowledge our presence. Not a good start..
We were then curtly told (not politely asked) by a waitress with a trendy (read: rude) attitude that we will be seated at the bar until our table is ready. This is already 8:18. Yes, I checked my watch.
30 minutes later, we are brought bar menus and asked if we'd like to order some bar food to which I asked to be seated at our table, pointing out that we booked for 8pm. Ten minutes later we are seated at 8:58 for what I was hoping would be a romantic celebratory birthday dinner for me and my partner. Suffice to say, we were both annoyed by this point.
I was close to expressing my displeasure to whomever was in charge but I was pretty sure they wouldn't really care and I didn't want to put a damper on the evening.
We ordered an assortment of most of the vegetarian starters and then skipped straight to dessert, keen to get out of there.
The food was tasty if not a little on the small side. Trendy servings with trendy (read: expensive) prices.
Perhaps going on a Saturday night wasn't the best idea but that doesn't excuse bad service.
Granted, our table waiter was lovely but it was hard to shake the initial sour experience we'd had upon arrival.
The dining room looks great from the outside but in reality it was so loud in there tha we had to struggle to hear each other's conversation across our table for two.
So to sum up, probably not the best place for a romantic Saturday night with your special person.. Maybe better to go during the week for that special experience or maybe better to just avoid it if you don't like bad attitudes from some of the waitstaff.
We didn't leave a tip.
Queen Of Bad Timing
What really broke the mould for us all was the crab crisp... A-MAZ-ING. There was something so right about the paper thin crisp that was salted and satisfyingly crunchy, topped with a generous mound of succulent crab and an aioli that has a really beautiful taste, it was fresh, zingy and almost felt a little reminiscent of Eastern flavours. I absolutely loved it and would be happy spending way too much money on way too many of these.

After being letdown by first impressions at The Standard, Shadow Wine Bar was a breath of fresh air. Great seating, busy but not noisy, friendly staff, PROMPT SERVICE, excellent food. We had jamon iberico, potato crisp/crab/lemon aloli, seafood brodetto. Perfect for a late night snack for two!

went here for dinner on a Saturday night a while ago. had a fabulous dinner and service. I had the homemade gnocchi which where absolutely delicious. had oysters and scallops to start off with. they were fresh and delicious too. decided to go for cheese instead of dessert. everything was amazing apart from the cheese with the grapes in it. wasn't our taste at all unfortunately. but the friendly and honest service made up for that. would definitely recommend this place.

Had the pleasure of dining here. Ordered a variety of entree bites to tantalise the tastebuds.

First was the beef tartare. The beef was very tender but the rich flavour was overpowered by what appeared to be a radish taste. This had the potential to be the best. Also ordered the scallop. Beautifully tender, the chorizo was too strong for the delicate Tate and texture of the scallop. Perhaps with one piece it wouldn't have been so strong. The crumb garnish was nice for contrast in texture but again, perhaps a little less. Make the scallop the hero. Also ordered a oyster with Bloody Mary. This was a big step up. The Bloody Mary was nicely spiced and worked well with the oyster. But the standout was the crab on potato crisp. The lemon aioli perfectly accompanied the crab. Was not too strong, and worked very well. The potato crisp was a perfect contrast in texture. This was the standout starter bite! As a main I ordered the beef. My guest also ordered the beef. My guest had a perfectly cooked steak mine was a little over. None the less, the flavour was rich. Caramelised onions were creatively presented. The silverbeet was a great addition to the plate adding to the earthy flavours. The celeriac purée was to die for. The creamy, smooth texture balanced the flavours and perfectly accompanied the dish. The pepper sauce was lacking, however as a jus, perfect! My side of broccolini, seasoned with chilli and garlic was a lip tingler. Loved it
My dessert choice was different as my guest ordered what would normally have been my first preference. My rhubarb dessert was outstanding. Perfectly poached, and balanced with a velvety smooth marscapone cream. The pistachio crumb and 'biscuit' was a perfect addition. This really was the standout addition to my dinner. The chocolate sandwich (my guests dessert), which was accompanied with orange, was nothing special. Nice yes, but nothing to write home about. I think, based on the quality and standard of the rhubarb dessert, I know more could be done to make the chocolate dessert more appealing.
A cheese course to finish, paired with a recommended wine, was a great finish.
On that note, the discussions about wines, the suggestions and knowledge was above average and was greatly appreciated. The pairings were perfect throughout the night.
Service was prompt, and was friendly.
Overall, an enjoyable experience. A couple of dishes, in their preparation, affected the score on this visit. 7/10

I was really looking forward to an evening at the shadow, but to be honest I was left a little disappointed. The bread and fennel butter had 3 pieces and shock horror we had 4 people at the table. So we ended up at 2 serves which were tiny little morsels and set us back $12! The waitress was a bit of a space cadet, and needed to be prompted to bring water a few times. I was excited that there were 3 vego options for mains but made a poor choice with the raw cauliflower fattoush. It was quite tasty, but more suited to a light summer lunch than a wet, windy winter's night. All up about 100 bucks a head and left feeling like they'd fleeced a lot of money from us for nothing special. Not rushing back anytime soon.

Went for Sunday lunch. Started with bread with fennel butter which good but I feel should be free.
Then a steak and crab little bite each, surprising that the crab was the better and tasted fresh with a good serving of meat.
Lamb neck and gnocchi for mains both cooked well. The lamb melted in the mouth and the gnocchi has fresh buffalo cheese which went well.
Desert was chocolate pave which was rich and a rurbarb dish with delicate merigane.
Service was good and attentive.
Also worthily mention was the Cirillo Shiraz which I am buying again to drink at home.

When a new place opens around town and the hype is super positive it means there are fairly high expectations when you go for a visit. But as I found out when I recently dined at Shadow Wine Bar they are embracing the influx of praise and ensuring that new visitors are similarly as impressed. GG and I were booked in for dinner on a Tuesday evening. Not a usual night for us to be out hitting the town but August 4th is our anniversary, our third this year, so marking the occasion with a nice meal seemed like something we should do. Located at the bottom of the new Alex Hotel, just down from the corner of William and James Street, it has a fairly understated entrance. I loved the fit out though. It’s a fairly large space with a modern, industrial feel to it with added warmth from some strategic lighting. Arriving early on a Tuesday meant we could snag a booth seat, which was lovely. Have to comment further on the lighting and say that as someone who likes to take snaps of what I eat it is ideal to basically have a spotlight above your table, loved it!

Great wine. Great starters. Mediocre mains, but that often is the case these days. Great setting and atmosphere. Service was OK...we were about to leave when someone at the table discovered our $84 bottle of red was still half full. We didn't even know we had another bottle on the go! Water top ups had to be begged for and still didn't arrive. More attention needed here guys to really really impress.

3rd visit for early after work dinner
Great vibe and attentive service.
Share plate options delicious
Would recommend a visit.
Try the pear tartin for dessert.

I liked this place a lot. Has a great feel to it with the black walls and high ceilings. Beautifully presented dishes. Quite often had to flag staff down though (probably the only down side). The fresh bread is delicious. I went for a pasta dish which was possibly one of the best pasta dishes I've ever had. From the photos you can tell this place does small portions but I actually couldn't finish my meal (possibly helped by the bread!). The chocolate pave was stunning too. Worth a visit and I hope to be back soon.

Our mains took an hour to come from the kitchen. Put simply, they lost our orders. When the food came out I thought I was looking at an entre. It wasn't as big as I was expecting for the price. We can't recommend this place. Sorry.

To celebrate my birthday, Mr and Ms Foodie, Madam Rabbit and the Pretty Shit Farmer accompanied me to the Shadow Wine Bar, a fancy'ish restaurant that is attached to the new boutique Hotel Alex on William Street, Northbridge. . We left having been adequately fed and watered, and with one of us wearing more red wine than she drank. It was an ok night, all things considered.

i have always loved this building and i am so glad that they have turned it into such a cosy and sophisticated venue. the bar service here was great, attentive and helpful with suggestions. we didn't eat here, but after eyeing the other patron's meals and smelling the over friendly wafts from the kitchen we are more than eager to try the menu.
Very impressed by the quality of the food here. Be warned that the starters are minuscule. Overall a nice experience until I checked my bill a few days later (I know...should have checked it at the time), to discover I had been charged for 3 bottles of sparkling water when we had specified tap. We hadn't had any sparkling up until the last carafe which we did notice was sparkling although not requested. Anyhow, annoyed at having $24 added to bill for something we hadn't asked for and 2 bottles of which were spurious charges. Warning...check your bill.Chrissy

Had a quick meal before the show last night. Good was spot on! Best fish ever and a great steak. Terrific staff and all are great price. Can't wait for an excuse to come back. Thanks

Went for dinner. Sat in the hallway near the kitchen , very interesting. 3 of us shared, bread/olives/choritzo. Main- veal schnitzel/padta/seafood. Dessert-almond cake/cheese platter/meringue. We had 3wines/2champagnes and diet coke. The bill was $255. The food is to die for, well presented and cooked to perfection. The service is impeccable. High quality and well worth a visit. You could go and just have a drink and one course . You can tell it is connected to bread in common. Would highly recommend .

You will have to wait a while if you decide to dine here. We were here on a Friday night, we had a reservation at 8pm but when we turn up they told us that they had a slow turnover of table tonight so we had to sit at the bar and wait till 9pm before we were seated at our table.
Then it took another 15 minutes before the waitress took our order, then another 30 minutes before our food were served. So we ended up having dinner at almost 10pm!!
Food was ok only, steak was cold, pork was fatty, pasta had big clumps in it.
All in all, won't be back here again. Not worth the money for what you get
Vanessa
Appalling service, we had to ask three times for some parmesan cheese and pepper. My dish, saffron rice with fish, squid and mussels was tasteless and over cooked ($38 too by the way!), I sent it back. The waitress was very apologetic. The place was freezing cold too and the crab pasta dish my husband had was ok, but Must and Red Cray do much better! We won't be back 😒

With so many new bars popping up around town it is hard to keep up despite being a food blogger. One bar that has sparked my interest is Shadow Wine Bar located in the new Alex Hotel. Moving away from the current trend of tight spaces and walk-ins, Shadow Wine Bar fills a large space with dramatic black and white interiors, massively high ceilings and an industrial warehouse-gone-chic feel.
