Review Lalla Rookh - Perth

Tony Savin
The staff were friendly and helpful with our order and the meals were great. Located next to the Mary Street Bakery. A good place to stir back and relax.

Really enjoyed our meal here!, great atmosphere, friendly staff and prompt service! (We had an early evening reservation)The wine list is compehensive and my cocktails were delish. Well worth a visit!

Very disappointed. Had read about this place on a few Perth lists, and liked the expansive ambience when we walked in. However all three of our dishes were underwhelming. The gnochhi was super oily, the mushroom and ox cheek ragu was heavy on the pasta and the lacked the richness of slow cooked ragu, the smoked risotto was bland, perhaps a bit undercooked. Noone came to check up on the dishes, and we ended up leaving without having the dessert we initially ordered. Only saving grace? Delicious coffees.

We had the pizza special which was a perfect balance of flavour and simple choice of ingredients, unusually tasty and a perfect crust. We Added to our lunch a serve of arancini and a serve of fried chicken also delicious we couldn't finish it all so took some home in a box. I can also I say the service was notably good, the waiter could comfortably describe everything on the menu, thank you for a great break in our day. If you go there remember to try the warm fresh bread served just before the meal with a drizzle of the olive oil from the bottles on the table. An added surprise.

Worst dining experience in a while. Tasteless arancini. The seafood pasta was just bits of dried fish cut up in bite size pieces in very ordinary sauce - totally bland. Only good dish was the octopus. Would not recommend.

I really love this place. It has 3 different ambiences, courtyard for causal eating, sit in restaurant and wine store. You essential a have buy 1 get 3 vibes free! The service for me was impeccable. This felt like Melbourne, New York, Asia hybrid service. The barkeep give me an education with the fine wines, the waiters introduced the dishes we ordered and the fit out felt truly on point. Kudos to the owners and the managers and training for the staff. In photos Vongole, Crab Spaghettini, gluten free fried chicken all fantastic!

Absolutely disgusting service by the manager and wait staff last night. Very rude towards our table of 7, took their time to ask for our drinks + food order. Told one of our friends off for blocking the isle when she was made to stand up. More than 5 spare tables in view and none of the tables had been filled by the time we ate and left. No communication by the staff with our table. Only exception was the amazing food and drinks, disappointing service. Only recommend this place for good food, beware of the poor service and lack of communication.

Very attentive service, we had the chefs selection of 6 courses 4 out of 6 were great. The pork crust was too salty and the past course presentation was pretty slack for a place that is supposed to be high end. The wine list was very great and I was pleased with all four wines we tried.

Lalla Rookh, in the basement of Allandale Square, offering high quality Italian fare, has three main areas – a bar when you first enter off the food court, a more dimly lit dining area, and through another set of doors the Wine Store off Sherwood Court where you can browse the racks of wine bottles, have a drink or take a bottle or two home, as well as have food brought through from the restaurant. It is a favourite place, but on this most recent visit we decided to seat ourselves in the restaurant area.

Fantastic dinner tonight! The service was really lovely and attentive and the food quite nice. A few issues with the booking (kept getting emails changing our booking time, even after we’d sat down)! Otherwise a really nice and pleasant night out!<br/><br/>Pictured is:<br/>1. Pappardelle (braised rabbit, cavolo nero, peas, parmesan)<br/>2. Zabaglione Semi Freddo (nougat, hazelnut, meringue)<br/>3. Table Bread<br/>4. Soda, Lime & Bitters

Best cocktails!

Service was good.<br/>Food was just ok - ingredients were low quality and not of the standard you’d expect for a $65 per head.<br/>I ordered the cured meet selection, which is labelled gluten free on the menu.<br/>When it arrived I enquired about the bread looking product that took 50% of the plate space. The waiting staff confirmed it was not gluten free.<br/>I’d hate to be a coeliac and finding out that 50% of the gluten free dish I just ordered has indeed gluten in it and is in contact with the rest of the food. <br/><br/>Very noisy venue overall and we were sat in the quietest part.<br/>

The food was great! My friend and I ordered a pork & fennel pizza and squid ink pasta. I honesty loved them both! The pizza was flavourful and the pasta was just delicious with the crab toppings and all. The price was okay, id be happy to come back and try their other pizzas and pastas! The only thing i didnt like was the absence of tiramisu on their desserts menu..

Returned to Lalla Rookh with a group of friends last night to give it another go after a previous experience of rude service over a year ago left me disappointed.<br/>I ordered the $37 lamb shank and green beans side. The lamb was small, uninteresting and the sauce was too acidic. I have had better shanks (read two) at a tavern for around $25.<br/>Had the $30 cold meats board which again was underwhelming for the price. The ladies had cocktails which were good, but appeared to be in much smaller than normal cocktail glasses. Good selection of beers both draft and bottled, but pricey.<br/>The atmosphere is OK but very noisy when it's ful to the point where the waitress had to pause and repeat with a really raised voice so we could hear her. Service was good this time around, though.<br/>Overall, for the food and experience, I feel it is over priced. As a result, we won't be back.

Great customer service, genuine and friendly. Produce were fresh and delicately cooked. Squid ink pasta was tasty with a mild kick. Sardines super fresh and one must soak the purée with bread and not be wasted. Have bookmarked and will come back when in Perth.

In a time when quality restaurants can be hard to find - let alone stay afloat - C Restaurant has remained a shining beacon in our local industry. Again, thank you for making our evening such a special one. You certainly showcased Perth in a very positive manner!

The Pizza we ordered:<br/><br/>Broccolini, spinach, ricotta, chilli, lemon: We ordered this pizza without lemon. We thought this pizza was bland and not what we expected. We didn’t enjoy it, but until we had the pasta, we didn’t realise that this was the better option of the two.<br/><br/>The Pasta we ordered:<br/><br/>Pumpkin tortelloni, sage, goats cheese, almonds: Although, we are generally not big fans of pumpkin there have been many Italian restaurants where the pumpkin pasta have been our favourite. We ordered this dish confident that we would love it, but we actually hated it! We preferred the pizza to this pasta, and we are not generally pizza lovers. The butter and cheese flavour was overpowering, and we were glad the portion size was small.<br/><br/>Bad service: <br/><br/>- The first bad thing about the night started with us waiting for staff to notice us at this extremely loud and noisy restaurant and seat us at our table even with a reservation. <br/><br/>- One member of the staff was not friendly while taking your orders and it felt like she was judging you by how much you ordered. <br/><br/>- The service is slow. We got our pizza first but then had to wait for an extremely long time to get the pasta. <br/><br/>The restaurant: <br/><br/>- The restaurant is crowded, loud and noisy. <br/><br/>The food:<br/><br/>- The food does not taste good. We have been to better pizza places as well as better pasta places. Not sure about the meat options here but the vegetarian options did not taste good. <br/><br/>- The quantity of the food served for the price you pay is small. <br/><br/>- The number of vegetarian options is very limited.

Low key and casual but with a touch of sophistication. lalla Rookh is definitely worth a visit. The quail was cooked to perfection and seasoned so well it was impossible to fault. The spaghetti with crab was just as fantastic. The pasta was al dente, heaps of crab and just so tasty. It is a bit noisy, but not unpleasantly so. It would be good to see a few more options on the menu but so far, I am very impressed.

Nice atmosphere, good drinks list and great service. Food was nice, but some dishes lacked seasoning or were poorly balanced in terms of salty, sour, sweet.<br/><br/>Would probably go back

Great restaurant. Had a wine I've been looking for which was even better (a Foradori Teroldego). Would have tried the El Capo but for one, that was going to be too much - the three dishes I did have were very well cooked and presented (octopus, and pink schnapper, finished with cheese selection). Could quibble about the big group behind me, but the service couldn't be faulted - attentive, interested (and interesting!). Great meal to finish off a trip to Perth

Amazing food, with spot on recommendations from our awesome waitress, Jess (the veal dish is a must)! Service was fantastic as were the cocktails. A new favourite place to add to our list, we’ll definitely be back.

Nice and cosy place. Always amazing. Great atmosphere, wine, food, service. Don't miss the wine store in the back, it's perfect and quiet.Love to come back soon.

Came highly recommended but was really disappointing. We went for the 'Il Capo' menu at $71pp. The chefs selections seemed to be more about cost saving than the Chefs Favourites (the dishes served would only add up to about $115 if we ordered them a la carte). The pickled tomato did not taste nice at all, the squid ink pasta was under cooked and the prawns severely overcooked, and although the scoop of ice cream for dessert was tasty, the tiny bit of crumb and toffee served with it made it pretty underwhelming.  The drinks special was great, but the service was a bit hit and miss.  Hot tip - order from the a la carte menu.

I’ve dined here a number of times in the past and have always been happy with the experience. One advantage of this wine bar/eatery is that it is open till late at night. They have a very impressive collection of wines. Could not fault any of the dishes we picked today.

Conveniently located at Allendale square with heaps of buses passing by that route. Service and atmosphere was good. They have the kitchen area for patrons who wants to enjoy their meal in a proper dinner setting and the bar/lounge area for a more casual setting. We ordered duck pappardelle and smoked pork neck. While waiting for our food, they serve us with bread with olive oil. I dont really enjoy the food to be honest and it is a bit overpriced but I will definately come here for a drink given the atmosphere and setting was good.

We were here on a Saturday to celebrate a mate's birthday.  Great ambience and service but the food was a little slow.  We waited approx. 45 mins between entree and mains.  They moved us to the bar after to make room for the next booking.  We didn't mind it and got better service there.
Starving Quokka
I am not sure if this is a typical Italian restaurant but it is rather a creative modern cuisine.  Loved the atmosphere, we had dinner here, very nice and the service is professional.

Went here with a group of 5. Service was great and food was delectable. Would highly recommend to anyone going for after work drinks or for a nice Italian meal with large group. Would go back and highly recommend.

Love the ambiance of this place! It feels so romantic and even when its full of people it still feels quiet and intimate. The food is consistently delish and the staff are very professional. We will be back

Came for dinner last night. Great ambience, nice decor and lovely staff. <br/>Loved the food. The barramundi was delicious and cooked perfectly with crispy skin. The pork neck was also very tasty. We also had some sides which were nice as well. Overall will definitely come back to try more of the menu.

We came here on a Friday afternoon for office Christmas 🎄 function. It was super busy. I decided to go with two entrees as I had been eating myself silly the whole of December. The Octupus dish was a bit over cooked and smothered with too much sauce. The kingfish was also drenched with too much dressing! I would have liked to just taste the natural sweetness Of the produce. Chefs nowadays are too over handed in putting dressings and sauces in the dishes and overlooked the fact that the produce could shine by itself without too much of the condiments.

Viva l'Italia!<br/><br/>Head chef Alexandra Haynes, is no stranger to Italian food. From her heritage at Florentino's in Melbourne to il Lido at Cottesloe, she takes Lalla Rookh on an Italian culinary journey.<br/><br/>Bookings were on Dimmi and service, despite being one of only a few tables on this night initially rather disinterested. It's amazing how restaurant maitre'd initially profile their diners. The dark, rather unwelcoming ambience did not help. First impressions however rapidly improved as our allocated waiter began introducing us to one of the most enjoyable, gastronomical experiences in the Perth CBD.<br/><br/>Recommended the dining menu, the waiter confirmed the chef could accomodate the pescatarian request of one of our diners. Wasn't a problem. The rest of us certainly didn't have a problem with Italian Seafood either! <br/><br/>The food. A taste of Italy. Every dish flavoursome, technical and execution spot on. I'm just going to let the photos speak for themselves. We came to Lalla Rookh with no expectations. And walked away wondering why we hadn't re-discovered this place sooner. <br/><br/>Dinner was paired to the  Barolo Serralunga d'Alba 2011. Plum, cherries but a lighter styled barolo with lovely soft, round vanillin tannins. I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed European wine.<br/><br/>I can't wait to visit Italy next year. The food is fabulous! But until then, just dine at Lalla Rookh. We thoroughly enjoyed it. And well deserving of it's recently attained a Chef's Hat in the 2018 Good Food Guide (which was yet to be awarded when we visited).

Recommended by a friend as a place to try in Perth<br/>.<br/>Pros: takes reservation, affordable selection of food, big seating area with a relaxing/lounge space outside<br/>Cons: a bit dark inside, could have easily improved on lighting, given that most people were there in groups and not intimate dates.<br/>Service: warm and welcoming<br/>Food: We had the kingfish (fresh, well seasoned), octopus (almost tasted like chicken!), gnocchi (burnt butter and pumpkin was an excellent combination) and lamb shank (soft, succulent meat falling off the bone, just like it should)<br/><br/>Would recommend it to others too :)
Roma1986
Excellent wine list. Shame about the food. Crab spaghetti was way too salty. To the point that it was unbearable to eat. My friends pasta was good, if a little too al dente. Honestly not worth the money. <br/><br/>

So disappointed, I loved Lalla Rookh the first time I went which was roughly 5 weeks ago, they catered to my dietary needs (with zero notice), food was excellent and staff were amazing. Last night, even with over a weeks warning, did not cater to dietary needs, staff were rude and unhelpful, food was awful and has made me very sick today. Unfortunately will not recommend.

We had the chef's selection here, it was all fine, we particularly liked the bruschetta, but at $70 p.p. I was expecting a bit more in terms of either quality/quantity. The veal was a bit tough, the pasta was a bit bland, the servings were a bit small. The ambiance was nothing special, overall, with the range of places available in Perth I don't think we'll be coming back.
Natalie
A very classy and elegant restaurant. Dimmed lights, candles and soft music. Fantastic service and perfect gnocchi. Perfect place for a date!
Becky
We ordered the seafood risotto (which I was told was delicious) and the best duck pasta I've had yet. The papardelle was paper thin and perfectly cooked, with plenty of duck meat and a lovely crunchy something on top. Very generous portions of pasta as well. <br/>Dessert was scrumptious. We ordered the quince semifreddo and Italian trifle. Both were almost perfect. I think they also change the dessert menu up semi regularly, so that exciting for next time

Have been here twice. Everything we have ordered has been delicious - the pea salad and the duck liver starter were amazing standouts. The pastas are amazing and I feel, fairly authentic to pasta we had in Italy. Do not like the service at all, have had trouble with missing orders, wrong bills and difficulty getting staff attention both times we were here. It's also very noisy - but to be expected given the bar setup.

Shared a selection of items from the bar menu for lunch. Tasty ! Also had a kombucha of which they had several flavours. It was nice they had something other than water & soft drink for non-drinkers
Little Aussie Epicurean
Delicious! Be adventurous and order the feed me menu where the chef chooses your dishes. Omg the liver and sweet onions made me fall in love with offal, so that next time we came back I tried the bone marrow and was equally delighted. Disclaimer These pictures and review are from some time last year and the chef has since changed.

Atmosphere: love the underground/hidden vibes!<br/><br/>Food: Had a pumpkin and goats cheese tortellini... Delicious! Quite well plated. Highly recommended! <br/><br/>Service: very pleasant staff, food arrived quickly. No complaints here.

Very nice restaurant, amazing service and the food was delicious. Had the beef carpaccio which was to die for, the duck taglietelle and veal cottaletta for main and the ricotta bombolini for dessert. That was amazing also. Even though I don't agree with expensive Italian food, for a special occasion it was worth it.

A group of 8 - the choice of restaurant was perfect! We had cocktails in the spacious bar, where we could sit around a table & talk - a rare find in the city. The best Italian food - we all had different dishes, with expectations being exceeded at every turn. Excellent service. We all had a different taste in wine, & could order by the glass from the extensive wine list. Highly recommended!

While visiting Perth, found this gem! Great starters (meat and cheese platter), cocktails and mains! Had the Duck Pappardelle, and it was fantastic. Looks to be a great place to meet up for some drinks after work. A bit of a hidden venue, but has an outside patio for being a basement level bar/restaurant. Great atmosphere.

I was really looking forward to dinner as I had heard that the food was delicious 😋 <br/>We started off with a entree of octopus and a salad both of which were tasty ( rather small for the price but tasty) I then had a main of the crab linguini and my husband had the ricotta and spinach ravioli.<br/>My linguini was SO salty that I almost asked the server to take it away but at $32 I decided to eat it in between sips of water 😒<br/>On the other hand my husbands Ravioli was SO sweet! We both were Very disappointed with our choices ! We decided to skip dessert and go somewhere else for coffee.<br/>The service at Lalla Rookh was superb 10/10<br/>
Evan
Overall, a bit pricy but worth the money. Among the entree the octopus was the absolute winner; the beef tongue is somewhat disappointing though. For its pasta dishes the pappardelle with duck was the most impressive one. The 600g T-bone was beautifully done. Btw the menu displayed on Zomato is a bit outdated.

Theres just something warming about the low lighting and industrial style furniture here that makes this places atmosphere perfect for a date night. Me and the hubby often venture here on a weeknight when the city is a little more quiet than usual! They have a great wine and beer list. Their food is consistently delicious, with the menu only having changed once in a year - so you know you can usually get your favourite. I also love that the menu is simple. It's modern Italian without the spaghetti and meatballs! Lovely charcuterie board - generously sized - is a great way to ease into the meal. We often share a pasta and a main and as I mentioned earlier- it never disappoints!
Anthoney
Interesting authentic Italian dishes, well constructed and thoughtful which please the palette. Predominately pasta driven and a smattering of mains, prices are pretty standard for Perth i.e ludicrously expensive. Negative points are the noise levels are high when busy, and tables are intimately spaced (its all about covers).
Alex Strickland
First of all, the construction around the entrance meant this place was rather hard to find, but we managed in the end. The place has a really nice ambience and looks like a great place for drinks.<br/><br/>The dining room has a really cosy feel, and the service was excellent, with highly attentive staff. I don't think we had to try to catch their attention even once. <br/><br/>I had the gnocchi, which I normally wouldn't order, but they were the perfect texture and the fennel in the ragu wasn't overpowering. The desserts were heavenly! If I have one criticism, it's that there was quite a limited choice of wine by the glass. Otherwise, a very good dining experience.
AnnMLou
Good atmosphere. Service was prompt but we had four different staff members taking orders, consistency would have been nice. Food was tasty. Meals do tend on the nlt quiet enough side.

December babies are a cheat when it comes to their age.  And I’m one of them.  I turned 28 in 2016 but I know that for the rest of 2017, I will still be telling people that I am 28 :P!  My birthday venue was at Lalla Rookh and so if you are looking for a place for drinks with great food?  Look no further. Famed for its good quality food in the CBD, I think it can now add “service” to its title as the waitress who served us that night did a stellar job.
Lydia
Blue crab linguine was not worth 32 dollars. Really lacked in both quantity and flavour. Service was terrible. The only reason I didnt rate this 1/5 because the pasta was handmade, but thats the only good aspect out of the rest really.
Richard
Just had a lunch with 10 from the office. Service was fine but honestly the serving sizes were bordering on mean...For $35 the Crab Linguini had a claw of crabmeat and a very restrained amount of pasta, the gnocchi was a 2 minute meal event and the prawn & cuttlefish featured 4 small pieces of cuttlefish and a collection of bait prawns...the quality of culinary skill was there but surely another handful of linguini and gnocchi isn't going to break the bank.

I would like to note that I have not written a negative review in the past, but there's a first for everything. I made a booking through Zomato for 3 people at 630pm on a Saturday night. Judging on the reviews on Zomato, the food and ambiance was rated highly. We went for the Il Capo, 6 courses of the chef's selection for $65 each. The courses came out in quick succession, with plates taken away and the next course served instantly. We felt a little rushed and requested the waitress to give us a few minutes between courses but we were told that there is a thirty second timer between the courses. Towards the end our dinner, we were asked to leave as it was a 2 hour booking. As I had made the booking earlier in the week, I expressed that I didn't realise it was a 2 hour booking. As an example, I made a booking on my phone with the waiter to show that when you book on Zomato, it  doesn't state that it's a 2 hour booking. 'Well it is a 2 hour booking' was the response we received. I stated that 'I realise you're a restaurant and you're busy but as a guest we're not informed of that'. His response was that he was one of the owners and that it was a 2 hour booking through dimmi and he was sorry. As we paid for our bill and were wrapping up our conversation, he came back shortly after and stated that he still needed the table. <br/><br/>As a regular diner in Perth restaurants and internationally, what I love about dining out is the great food, atmosphere and company. I appreciate that 2 hours sittings occur in some restaurants for a higher turn over to generate more revenue. When this is the case, the consumers are able to make an informed decision to go ahead with the booking. <br/><br/>Whilst the 2 hour booking was not the issue, nor that it didn't appear on the booking, my 1.0 rating was simply the way the situation was handled. There was no sincere apology, no acknowledgment that the booking system did not inform guests at the time of booking so that I was unaware this was the case. I felt there was a lack of professionalism, customer service or any value in the guest at all. This could have been easily handled with an offer of finishing our drinks in their courtyard, bar or lounge for which there was ample capacity. As it was also my birthday, we walked out feeling disappointed, will not be returning and also will recommend others not to go.

On a Friday it's the local for several nearby offices. Quick service, solid pub restaurant meals at the top end of price and quality for a large barn-like eatery and bar.
Hayley HE
One of our waitresses was great, however one of the other servers was quite rude. I had an orange juice to start -it was $9 but I was really craving it. When it came out, it was a regular sized glass and it tasted like plain old Harvey fresh orange juice. For $9 I would expect something that tastes more like fresh orange juice than cheap store bought oj.
Monika
The food was lovely and so was the bar staff! However, the waitress we had was rude. It is never okay for anyone to be sarcastic before they know the customer well. Considering I was polite and the only word I had said was thank you, I was very irritated by this exchange. For the price I paid for my meal and drink, I expect to be treated with just a common curtesy.

Delicious meal last week. We had the 5 course menu and each course was yummy...my partner was still a little hungry at the end and thats the only reason they didnt get 5.
Raina Cheng
We went out for drinks as a team one time. Located in the heart of Perth’s business district is this underground-level bar called Lalla Rookh, which houses a separate kitchen for serious eating called Salumi & Co. To start off, we got the nduja-topped Grilled Octopus (AUD 32). The barbecued octopus was fresh and ever so slightly sweet. I felt that it was great on its own, and didn’t need the whitebean mash in the dish. (It threw off the taste.)
Matt
Came here with the family during the week for dinner.  Was surprised to see the entire restaurant is below ground!  The lack of windows surprisingly gives it a nice feel, which is helped by the decorative touches.  The food was very tasty overall, however would have loved a bit more of a serving.  This would make an excellent restaurant to come with a few mates for a boozy dinner.

Overall, lovely place and fairly priced. The flavours are strong though, so better to order less and add if you're still hungry rather than order heaps and overwhelm the palate.
Schmamie
I've had the 6 course Il Paco twice and it was awesome both times. Parfait and Carpaccio are the winners! It's off the cuff so you get something different everytime. Drinks are great too. Fast becoming my favourite place.
LittleAsianGirl
The menu didn't really have anything that stood out. But we enjoyed the pasta here. Fresh house made pasta. Delicious flavours. The crab linguine was delicious. Zesty and limey with some chilli (not spicy). The pappardelle with rabbit was also delicious. The rabbit flavour wasn't over powering. One of the waitresses recommended the smoked lamb rump. It was cooked perfectly, juicy and the smoked flavour came through the lamb. Service was average though. They didn't really check on how we were going and whether we wanted to order. Each time we had to wave down a waiter or waitress.

A little while ago I headed back to Lalla Rookh Bar & Eating House for dinner, not knowing at the time, that this would be my last il Capo experience with head chef Joel Valvasori at the helm. Lalla Rookh is one of my favourite Italian restaurants in Perth and their pasta is incredible thanks to Joel channeling his Northern Italian roots and focusing on seasonal produce. The modern Italian menu is full of mouthwatering dishes but the il Capo is the way to go to get the full experience. Letting you sit back and enjoy as six chef selected dishes are placed in front of you, share style. You get to try a mix of menu favourites as well as off menu chef specials.
LauraLovesFood
I came here for my birthday for a dinner for two. We ordered the chef selection with no seafood. I think it is good value for money- 6 courses is a lot of food and my friend and I can eat A LOT! The food was nice... Some of the dishes are very unique therefore some people will love and others will dislike, I wasn't a fan of some of the more unique dishes. The bone marrow dish was beautiful. I may go back. I wouldn't do the chef selection again as I believe it is too much food and I did feel a little ill and bloated after due to eating so much. Staff are loving. Great vibe to the place- romance, dimmed lights and nice atmosphere.
Jasmackandherpack
Husband and I had seriously one of the best meals ever here. Great wine list. Charcuterie board was Devine. As was the pan fried gnocchi! Will definitely return!!
Michael
Great little Italian joint in Perth CBD. I always love it when restaurants have things on the menu that's a little bit left field. We got the Pappardelle Rabbit which was really top notch. <br/><br/>Would recommend this joint to anyone.

Ambience massive tick. Service massive tick. Food delicious tick. Value for money, yes yes yes. Love this place will be back next time I'm in Perth.

A nice restaurant - very ambient and the service was fantastic. The pasta was well received by my table! I found it verrrrry salty though! I would try it again though, to give it another chance.
Critical Affair
We ordered the crispy skin barramundi, kingfish, wild rabbit pappardelle, rabbit pasta, crab gnocchi and bone marrow. The food was well presented, the service was very good. Absolutely loved the cocktails here. Highly recommended.

When I've got a craving for Italian good, this is the place to go. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the service is prompt. They have a large selection of Italian and Spanish wine as well as Australian at affordable prices. They also have lunchtime specials at reasonable prices. I would highly recommend the il capo for those who are looking for a large selection of Italian food. The chef selects 3 entrees, 1 pasta, 1 main and 1 dessert from the dining menu in addition to complimentary house made olive focaccia. Note: the portions are very generous. Everything is made with love and care, it's beautifully seasoned. You won't walk out disappointed.

Delicious food! We came here on a Tuesday evening for dinner. We decided to order the bone marrow, swimmer crab gnocchi and the wild rabbit pappardelle. First came the free bread. It was nice, salty and dripping with olive oil. About 20 minutes later the 3 dishes came out together. The bone marrow was rich and buttery and was delicious when I mopped it up with the grilled buttery bread. The pappardelle was amazing! The pasta was cooked al dente and the rabbit ragu with the dish was tasty and warm. The rabbit was so soft and the olives were surprisingly but tastily sweet. The gnocchi was pretty nice, but it wasn't pan fried like all the other ones I've had around Perth. The blue swimmer crab meat was tasty along with the rich tomato ragu. I just would recommend for there to me more sauce for the pappardelle and gnocchi! For dessert we shares the honeycomb gelato and the pannacotta. The gelato was rich, smooth and creamy and complented the dense fried veneztia. The orange and chopped almonds gave the dish a fruity and nutty punch. The pannacotta was wobbly, creamy and rich in vanilla flavour. It came with cocoa and walnut crumble which wasn't too chocolatey and just divine.

Great dining experience, the place has this dark and mysterious atmosphere and let's not forget the awesome Italian food. The only downside for me is that some of the prices are a bit steep, however, the customer service is exceptional!
Serena
Been here a couple of times for drinks and bites. Cocktails are good and wine list has a great selection. We tried the smoke the pig pizza and it was really tasty. Arancini has a nice texture, but i think it would be greatly improved with a napoletana sauce for dipping. Fritta di mare is great too. Good texture and seasoning. I especially loved the school prawns.
Wintersolstice
Oh gosh what a delight. Cozy atmosphere with perfectly dimmed lighting. Lovely professional service. Dinner was a wonderful adventure of carpaccio and rabbit. No, not together :) Really enjoyed the eating experience!
Pravy
Came here for dinner the other night. We ordered the kingfish, rabbit pasta, crab gnocchi, vegetarian pasta and crispy skin barramundi. The food was gorgeous. Service was very good and the atmosphere was very cozy. Nice addition to the CBD. Recommend it if you're in the area.

Lalla Rookh are an Italian style restaurant featuring dishes of a more traditional, regional, home style type feel. I've eaten at a lot of Italian restaurants but the cuisine here is quite unique. The venue features many different spaces, stools at the bar, tables for that special occasion, or out in the beer garden with your mates. There's also a wine store too, but the wine is also available with your meals. Sometimes choosing items from the menu is too hard. Thank goodness for the 'il capo' feed me menu which we chose. For $65 per head, this features 6 courses of dishes chosen by the chef to feed the table. Two different focaccia varieties were presented which were well seasoned bringing out the herb flavours and I enjoyed the crunchy and slightly chewy crust. The first dish of the night presented duck liver parfait which is normally rich, but served with an Italian wine reduction, nullified any richness but not the flavour. Enjoyed with the buttery lightly toasted brioche, it was excellent. Next up were crostoli, a crispy pastry, holding light creamy buffalo mozzarella balanced with the acidity from blood orange which made for an excellent combination. Steamed Norwest tiger prawns were perfectly cooked, but significantly enhanced by the amazing fennel and chilli sauce. A pasta dish of handmade pockets of fusilli holding a delicious rabbit and liver mixture was the next dish presented which was enjoyed thoroughly. Certainly full at this point, like an Italian nonna full of generosity and hospitality, there is more to come with a meat dish of baby goat and a bean ragu. One bite of the succulent baby goat has one's appetite immediately revived, but the green bean ragu is simply stunning, so so flavoursome, one wouldn't think beans could taste so good. For dessert, two were presented. The first was a vanilla semi freddo which was soft and creamy, served with a soft nougat for a chew texture, and macerated apricots provided a different texture and sweetness. The other dessert is none other than panna cotta, an Italian icon, and this didn't disappoint. Smooth and very creamy, the slight bitterness from the caramel sauce helped to cut through the richness. The walnut and fruit mixture adds a lovely textural contrast. A simply fantastic dining experience, dishes full of flavour, generous, and certainly not leaving hungry, rather the opposite!

Unfortunately I had to leave before dinner but the pre-dinner drinks were great and the service friendly and professional. By all accounts from my friends the food was delicious but portions were a little small. Looking forward to eating next time!

Great place to catch up with friends or colleagues over some drinks. I like their set up with seating both indoor and outdoor and around every corner for some privacy too. I like their pizzas and tapas style dining. Pretty good for casual grazing but it's not a place I'd choose for a good feed.

Absolutely brilliant. Went here on Friday night and (having had no lunch & hence starving hungry) had pasta entree and main; pappardelle with rabbit was fantastic, and the goat (capretto) for main was impossible to fault. Great flavour and perfectly cooked. Looking forward to coming back.

Went for dinner and had the spinach and ricotta with fig ravioli and the rabbit pasta.  Both dishes were soo tasty and you could tell it was all fresh!  However for the servings that you get for the price you pay is a little disappointing, luckily you get complimentary bread and oil dip beforehand.  The ravioli was a tiny serving.  The rabbit pasta was decent size.

Dinner for 2<br/>Food: pappardelle rabbit ragu , spinach and ricotta ravioli, peasanella<br/>Drank: feral beer and Kosciuszko<br/>$ 72+12<br/>Food was really yummy. House made pasta was perfect and I think we enjoyed the pasta just by itself. The rabbit ragu contained prunes adding a sweetness to the dish. The spinach ravioli was with a butter sauce, a little salty and was surprisingly filling. The peasanella was fresh and went well with the main meals. <br/><br/>Definitely would come here again!

Hmm. Another disappointing lunch. Luckily I had $50 off through Dimmi points. I had been dying to come here based on the chef's Instagram account, and a taster of the food many years ago. We chose the Chef's Selection. This is $62 each, for 6 shared dishes. So not like your usual degustation where you have your own dish. Each dish was incredibly salty (we both agreed on that). The stand out was the goat which was cooked BEYOND perfectly, but again too salty so ruined. We calculated what we would have paid if we had bought the same dishes off the menu each, and it worked out at roughly a saving of, wait for it, $2.00. Food aside, I love the venue in terms of decor and ambience, and it was lovely and toasty. There is now a surcharge for credit card and PayPass transactions. I do not plan to return for food. <br/><br/>I came here recently for drinks. Minimal choice of sweets wines but they were tasty. Lovely service. It's been a while since I've eaten here but definitely plan to do so soon as the photos on the chef's Instagram look amazing. The last time I ate here a few years ago I was surprised at how good the food was, unexpected! Quite a large venue, and happily accept PayPass/EFTPOS.

Lalla Rookh is right near our office so it's our regular when we're in need of a sneaky drink or casual lunch get together. Food and drinks are priced reasonably. And service is always so friendly and helpful

This place is truly a hidden gem that I didn't know about. The food are delicious and the place offer such a wide range for wine. The staff are very knowledgeable and can assist with wine matching. The serving size on the food are generous in proportion so if you are thinking of sharing order limited amount and add some more if you're hungry. The only hassle is parking but hey, that's Perth CBD in general right?

Excellent Italian. The goat was melt-in-your-mouth tender. The rabbit pappardelle was fantastically well-seasoned.<br/>Try out this underground den.<br/>

Can't complain about the food- went there for a 30th birthday party. It was $45 pp and the food was delicious. Good service. The only drawback for me was the noise level. This is something they can't help I suppose as that has more to do with the restaurant acoustics, the walls, ceilings and layout. There were about 15 people in our group and they seated us next to a 60th birthday party (party of 20-25), where we had to be quiet a few times for their speech. Probably not my first choice in the city.

We went to Lalla Rookh last night after being recommended by a friend. Six of us decided to try the " we'll feed you option " as everything on the menu sounded nice.<br/>To say that we went home hungry is an understatement. The dishes took way too long to come and when they did come, although tasty, were just not big enough. The final straw for my wife was the desert, (which would have just about fed two but was for the six of us), said to the waitress, "you are joking ? "<br/>We complained, and to be fair the manager was apologetic and took the price of a bottle of wine off the bill.<br/>On the plus side, the decor and atmosphere of the place is lovely and the staff were attentive enough. Maybe they just had an off night ! Wont risk it in the future though.

Went here for a special occasion based on the excellent reviews and what a mistake, the food was so salty, especially the pasta that I couldn't actually eat it.  It also smelt like the packet alfredo that you buy at the shop and make yourself.  I felt like I had let my partner down by choosing this place.  We ended up leaving prior to finishing our 6 course chef degustation because we couldn't face another dismal dish. Service and wine list were good, but wouldn't come here for the food.

This was among the worst places I have ever been. Food was well below par. Staff nice and had a good wine. Would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. This is the first time I have ever ever felt compelled to write a review normally vote with my feet.

We went the the wine bar. OMG! I though I was in a little quaint restaurant in Prague! Service is top notch, yummy cheese platter with cold meats and olives, but the wine is the star! Will be going back next time I'm in the city!

It is the second time that I have tried this place. It is a nice space tucked away downstairs, with a funky industrial feel. I thought I’d give it a try for lunch having done the group dinner with the chef’s selection which put the hassle out of choosing items. It was a very pleasant experience.<br/><br/>I arrived promptly at midday and there was plenty of choice of tables. The wait staff were friendly and gave me recommendations on the food and wine which were spot on. I decided to go with the gluten free (which simply meant without bread) braised bone marrow topped with parmigiano for entrée and for mains the ricotta gnocchi with blue swimmer crab. The entrée consisted of two halves of a bone filled with delicious marrow braised in a tomato sauce. Lovely flavours and the marrow was melt in the mouth; I could have eaten more. Only one negative was the sauce was a little over salted. <br/><br/>The gnocchi came out quickly after my entrée. Nicely presented and good flavours in the sauce. I have high expectations for the gnocchi, as I never forget the most delightful buttery melt in the mouth gnocchi I had in Torino. These were not quite there in their softness, being slightly firmer than those I had in Tornio. Again the sauce to me felt a little over salted, but when combined with the gnocchi it was good. <br/><br/>I had not decided to have dessert, but after these two dishes I still an extra notch in my belt. I went with the honeycomb gelato, fried veneziana, candied orange and toasted almonds. The dessert was quite small, but presented beautifully. Flavours were very nice with the richness from the gelato and then tanginess of the orange. I loved this dessert, and can say ended my meal on a high note. Will definitely be back to try the winter menu.

Have been wanting to try this place for ages and finally ended up coming for dinner on a Friday night. It's a bit of a random one to find - literally a staircase in the middle of the city which goes down to a bit of a cave, but the vibe down there was really cool! The two things I was dying to try were the braised beef marrow and the gnocchi, and they didn't disappoint. The marrow was delicious and very flavoursome and topped off with a heap of Parmesan, which is always a good thing. The ricotta gnocchi was also amazing and had the softest and most pillowy texture. To start we shared the marrow and also tried the kingfish crudo and the carpaccio. I loved the crudo but the carpaccio wasn't my favourite; although the portion size was very generous with these two in comparison to the usual standards for this kind of dish. For the mains we shared the gnocchi and pork sausage, which was tasty but at the end of the day it was just a sausage. Next time I would probably pick the pappardelle instead, which I've heard great things about. All in all, the food was really good and very nicely presented and the servers were friendly and very helpful. <br/><br/>Quick side note for anyone who can't be bothered reading a long and comprehensive wine list- I would highly recommend the Express Wines Malbec!

Another surprise from the wife for our 3 year anniversary! Totally loved the whole old American prohibition underground feel that came from the dim lit dining area! <br/><br/>The food was superb and ofcourse as per most fancy restaurants the servings were miniature! For entree we shared the bruschetta with duck liver. It was presented beautifully, the small pieces of bruschetta with surprisingly succulent duck livers. I've never had duck liver whole before (only pate) but oh man it was a great appetiser! For mains I had the pork sausage with wild sauer kraut and the wife had the gnocchi. Firstly I have to say my sausage was the best sausage I've tasted hands down! The large sea of sauer kraut it was laid upon was equally delicious yet the $30 price tag for one sausage was a bit over the top but hey it filled me up! The wife's gnocchi was cooked perfectly and melted in your mouth! We shared a side of potatoes that most certainly made sure our average sized mains were an adequate meal. For dessert I had the honeycomb gelato which came with some brioche style bread pieces that were soaked in syrup. The gelato hit the spot as a perfect palate cleanser but the pieces of bread were too sweet! The wife had the pannacotta which was tiny yet tasted authentic! Both were quite small (only one small scoop of gelato) for $15 each which was again over priced. <br/><br/>The service was great and the waiters were friendly and attentive! Just wish it wasn't so expensive for the small portions but the quality sure makes worth the hefty price!

Went with friends to try the food. I had the Baramundi with a tomato/celery salad and it was absolutely delicious! That fish was cooked so well, i really enjoyed it with the white wine :)

Have been wanting to visit for a while since reading all the rave reviews. Beautifully presented restaurant with separate bar and dining area. There is an outside area too. We didn't know that booking a table meant there was a 2 hour limit to being at the table if we were sitting inside. So we chose to sit outside. It was very poorly lit so reading the menu was a bit difficult. <br/><br/>We chose the fried potatoes, fried pizza and gnocchi with blue swimmer crab. The pizza was probably too thick for my liking but the fried version is a must-try and interesting concept. Gnocchi was lovely and soft, the blue swimmer crab was probably a bit lost though, perhaps better served in a bowl so it wasn't wasted on the plate. It still tasted delicious. Fried potatoes had a sour cream dip which was just perfection. Pretty good experience overall.

Everything was great. Good food, drinks, and service. I would recommend trying Lalla Rooke, especially their fish dishes. I ordered the barramundi, and would love it again.

Nice enough bottle of Pinot from Oregon, USA (Evasham Wood, 2012). Based on Vivino, marked up from $50 average price to $130 for restaurant price.<br/><br/>Nona's meatballs were quite nice. Pea salad was really good.<br/><br/>But when we came to pay using our credit card, we were told there was a surcharge.<br/><br/>I mean, WTF? Surely the margins are not so tight they can't incorporate the credit card charges in to their prices?<br/><br/>Not going back for this reason alone
