Review The Karalee On Preston - Perth

Glen Gillespie
Friends have spoken about the Karalee for months. Very impressed staff were lovely, orders were taken quickly. I've been told that the Karalee had the best steak sandwich, and yez they did, steak was tender, bread was light and easy to eat, the relish was to die for. Chilly muscles had the right amount of chilly. Garlic prawns were good, can't go wrong with them Over all, lovely meals, And best steak sandwich

Cale provides absolutely grand service - a great conversationalist & is fantastic at his job. Very professional, the meals are generous in size too. Feels wonderful to get some outstanding service in these times. Would recommend.
Mister Mould (Mister Mould)
Great atmosphere. The staff were very friendly. The food was fantastic. My wife had the garlic prawns with basmati rice and I had bangers and mash. Both were very good.
Briony Drummond
Good food, quick service, big portion sizes. Their steak sandwich is also worth mentioning, definitely one of the best ones around.

Holy moly, what an amazing place to eat at! The food was probably the tastiest food I've had in Perth, and for an amazing price! Had the Lamb Shanks, Garlic Prawns and the Pork Belly. Cannot recommend this place enough, can't wait to go back!

Friendly bar staff is always a great start. We shared a steak sandwich and it’s as good as they say. The chips are good too. I’m just sorry we didn’t get a photo, too hungry to wait. I like that you can walk in and grab a table, order drinks and food when you are ready and it’s all reasonably priced
Josephine Allison
Great place! Lunched with friends at Karalee on Preston yesterday. Service excellent, wait staff so attentive and even asked if our meal (huge!) was satisfactory. Had to return when I lost an earring (suspect it was outside when I removed mask) and again girls were so helpful. Will visit again. Josephine

The decor of this pub is one to maximize profit. The food quality is absolutely shocking - my steak looked and tasted like an elephants tongue. And if you think friendly staff and service might save the day? Eh well, you're in for a shock in that area too.

Why does everything have chili in and on it??? I ordered the pumpkin coconut soup and it was so hot with chili couldn’t eat it and the wine was ewwww and the platter was covered in chili to much chili aghhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Good location though and the marshmallow cakes Delish

Thought the pub looked great and on reading about award winning steak sambo..I couldn't resist..service was perfect and the view was just as good..I did order the steak sandwich..went to the bathroom and when I came out it was sitting there waiting for me..I thought wow..that was quick..but then it wasn't good from there..the chips were all stuck together and not good at all..and the steak sandwich was just over powered by the bbq sauce dripping all over it..I could have been having liver cos all I tasted was bbq sauce..so a little let down on that one..

A-grade steak sanga to say the least, the pork crackling on the side was the cherry on the top the wife and I will be back, friendly service/good atmosphere/good beer on tap check it out !! Peace & love too all

The famous steak sandwich lived up to its reputation and the beer was cold and delicious. The special St Patrick’s Day event was great too. A top night!

Great staff and great food and great atmosphere. Congratulations on the 2017 best Steak Sanga win, I had it yesterday and it was amazing! love the touch with crackle on the side, delish!!! :D

Nice meal nice beer. Service was excellent. what more could you ask for. Love the view from the dining room. It overlooks where Burnett bakery was in the 50,s. Excellent theatre over the road which I had not been to for about 40 years...oh the memories of youth.

Overall food was great salt and pepper squid was a little blan but the amazing desserts and excellent service made up for it only negative is it was quite warm and stuffy inside but we will definatly be back!!

First meal since arriving in Perth. Great start. Friendly staff and great food.

We enjoy going to the Karalee for a meal. It is in walking distance for us which is great m. Staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is great. Hubby lives being able to see some AFL while we eat and chat. Shame the big screen has disappeared. AFL needs to be on the majority if the screens. We will be back again this Saturday for a family dinner which we are looking forward to. A great place to visit.

First time visit from out of town and the food was absolutely delicious, extremely fast service and the customer service if the staff was amazing very well looked after by your staff have been raving about our visit since!

Food Order:
Mushroom Risotto
Wedges

Drinks: lemon, lime bitters

Total bill: $40

Final verdict:
A great pub/hotel situated in Como suited for families. Friendly atmosphere and good vibes in there. But I was disappointed with the portion size of my food(Risotto) since I paid so much for it. Other than that, a pleasant experience in this pub but will think twice before I spend my money on food due to portion sizes.

Been wanting to try the Karalee for ages. We had a table by the window with a great view of the sunset. The antipasto share plate for entree was delicious. The steak sandwiches for mains were worth the visit. Beer was well priced and service quick and effecient
Ricky Emilius
The first bite of their steak sandwich made me smile. It was delicious, steak char-grilled perfectly cooked medium rare just the way I like it. The combination of rocket, tomatoes , pepper jack cheese, and their own aioli recipe just wow. Was well worth the price too. Had the antipasto for two as well and we absolutely loved it. Sweet spicy pork was cooked so well they melted in our mouth, sourdough bread had really nice mouth watering char grilled aroma, grilled marinated prawn skewer and calamari really goes well with the chorizo and the sauce. We definitely ordered the best foods of this pub. Staffs were quick to serve and friendly too! Will come back to have the steak sandwich again for sure.

This place were very busy on the weekend. I came here for my friend birthday dinner. The foods are nice, the staffs are friendly. The food was served pretty fast. Overall it’s good experience for me.
Michael Naughton
Had a great dinner here last week, the atmosphere and vibe of the pub made it even better. Look forward to coming back and trying the tasting plate.
Jazzy Jones
I came here and had the steak with pepper sauce which came with chips and salad 🥗

I must say that the steak was cooked quite well and all that was left on my plate was the days which seems a little too much!

Besides that the chips were okay but could be a little crispier but besides that it was all good food!

The place was crowded when I went and a very loud vibe!
Lisa Waine
Best steak sandwich ever. Great service and nice atmosphere too. Gets nice and busy in the restaurant. Meals were served quickly and more importantly they were hot when they arrived at the table.

Not the sort of place you would pick unless you are a local or recommended by a local.
Big open dining area, busy and vibrant.
Menu does not do justice to the quality of the food on offer.
Definitely over delivers.
Went for dinner tonight with friends and their 2 year old. We were all super impressed when they gave us a little activity pack for the toddler. It kept her pretty amused. I had the calamari and it was cooked perfectly. My partner had the chicken parmi which he enjoyed.
The service was quick and friendly. We will be back. The night was topped off with a beautiful sunset.
Catherine Harris
Great pub experience. Food was delicious - we had the steak sandwich, pork belly, risotto and calamari on our table and everyone loved all the dishes but it was the service that was the real standout. The staff were considerate, attentive and appropriate. I don't think I have experienced such great service in years and I eat out a lot. Price was good too.
Jakub Gomeze
Will not return, called before hand to make sure the ufc will be on, was told it will if it's on foxtel, came in watching it then 10 mins later was told there is kids here we have to turn it over, left immediately and went to the Como hotel
Cassie
I ordered the fish of the day which was a grilled barramundi with potato gratin and a salad. The fished was cooked well with the flesh flaking apart easily and the skin was crispy. Salad was nice too. Partner had the steak sandwich which in their menu they claim to have won an award for. It was a nice sandwich but not remarkable.
Sophie
Menu has a lot of variety, food is always fresh and delicious and the staff are always friendly and happy. This is definitely our 'local' and such a handy place to have down the road for a quick easy meal. Consistently good!
Mitchell Harford
Legit microwave meals from the iga next door! What a rip off and absolute joke. Staff got drinks wrong then dinner wrong although took them about two minutes to cook it up in their microwave
Andrew
Used to be a firm favourite however seems things have slipped somewhat. Sunday afternoon, only 2 tables in the dining area seated and the bar area not even at 50% capacity. Sat down in the bar area to a dirty table & chairs scattered everywhere. No staff at anytime offered to clean up around us. When the food was delivered, the burger was below average, just a mucky mess tbh & the Bruschetta was standard. Once again, nobody checking in to see how our meal was & then our plates left half empty for about 20 minutes & not being cleared because the staff were busy...doing nothing as the venue was empty compared to its busy times. All good & well to offer compensation when I complain, but it shouldn't have got to that stage. Whatever happened to customer service or is it a venues god given right to expect me to hand over my cash for shoddy service. Disappointed to say the least Karalee. Doubt I'll be back.
Dan The Cake Man
This place always seems to be busy and especially on a Friday. I have been here now a few times for drinks and dinner. More recently was just for a quick drinks. Staff always helpful and can’t get past the fantastic view of the River. Prices for drinks seem reasonable.
Michael Thompson
While visiting jersey jacks I saw the sign 'best steak sandwich' across the road on a building. Looking for a nice lunch on this sunny day so shot down for a look. Fantastic location! The view varies from glimpses of the city to to full river. The open bifold windows made it a delight on a warm day (31deg). Steak sandwich $25 and it was large! It had great flavour and would be more than enough for any hungry human. The portion size of chips was just enough too. Will be back but will squeeze in a dessert next time
Laureli16
No great. I wouldn't eat here again. Food very average at best and so over priced! Not a very ambient venue either, no music or even TV volume. I wouldn't rush back. Service was good but they don't check on your table or ask how things were. To be honest... I wouldn't either..😊
Pia
Great local pub!
You get good pub food and good service here. I had the lamb shank and it was delicious! Would recommend for a casual night out with friends or family. Much better food and value for money than any other pub in the area.
Fat Freddy
I love this pub. The beer is good, the wait staff are efficient, the food is good and especially the steak sandwich, which deserves its reputation. The views of the river and the sunset just make me really happy, thirsty and hungry, which is a dangerous combination for old fats here. The only little issue I have is with one guy in particular who has indian accent on the phone and can be rather rude at times. It might be that they get a bit stressed at times but won't stop me from going there.
Laura Bailey
Busy but great food. Antipasto good size for two. Easy Friday night or weekend cosy meal. All meals I've had here have been good and good value - not cheap but portion are big
Lila
Comfortable place, staff were lovely and even gave us a comfortable table so I could feed my baby with a little privacy. The steak sandwich really is as delicious as they say!

2015:

1. Steak Sandwich. 4/5. Good.

Thanks

Love this place being my 'local'. The food is always good and the service is friendly and attentive. You can always get a good steak here, & yummy comfort food. And let's not forget the perfect view of a sunset over the river.

Went with a large group on a busy Friday and our orders were handled really well. Great selection of dishes and specials, very generous sizes. Great service and easy going atmosphere.
LittleGirlBigFood
The old karalee pub! I remember my ex used to try out the role of bar fly here. It seems like a nice enough suburban haunt that served a good scotch fillet..
Ben Chaffey
Great friendly place with a decent menu. The steak sandwich is the best I've ever had, plus the other dishes are fresh, tasty and ample.
The best thing is the service, each time I've been here you feel like a valued customer and never have to wait around long. The manager seems like the loveliest guy and always has a smile on his face.

Rolled into the Karalee on what seemed to be a busy Tuesday night. My mates and one acquaintance (you know who you are) sat down for our usual midweek feed which has somewhat become a tradition. The atmosphere in the bar seemed as lively as the current Australia vs West Indies test series however it was good to see local legend Anthony Morabito being among the diners. The menu said best steak sandwich in WA so that was the go for most people.

The steak sandwich was okay, cooked well however nothing really made it standout and the chips were a little over done for my likely. Not the best steak sandwich in WA in my opinion.

Overall a pleasant dining experience for a Tuesday night but nothing really makes me want to go back as it just seemed pretty standard.

I love this hidden treasure…Great locals bar and better option to the windsor…food is on point and views are great..You need to try their steak sandwich

Great place to catchup for afterwork drinks and am a really big fan of their steak sandwiches!

Lovely staff and service and have had no baf experiences over many visits.

Love the food and goes very well with view and service, well done, keep up a good work...tried new winter menu with family, lamb shank and southern style butter milk fried chicken salad😋

Bit disappointed in the steak sandwich, quite bland, other than that was alright experience food took a while to arrive but was busy at time, would come to try something else next time
Lady Marmalade
Toilets with the best views ever is all I will remember about this overpriced place. After walking past all the locals who are holding the bar up, you have to order at the bar. None of their salads are made in house, green salads come out bags. They use about to expire or expired stock from the IGA next door, they should be careful who is shopping there and what we hear. Had I known this beforehand I would not have eaten there. Staff look happy but bored. Food pretty average but as I said, it all comes pre-made.
Sierra
Pretty standard sports bar vibe. Food is decent, but not terribly original or unusual. service is ok but not terribly attentive. The view is pretty good though.

I met here as part of a group of 6 people. We got a crappy table in the corner and the rest of the restaurant was empty so it was confusing. Sure enough though - the place was absolutely packed by the time we left so they were obviously all reserved. This place was okay. The service was veeeery average. We were seated at our table for a good 15 minutes before anyone bought us water. Also, it was dead quiet when we got there so I don't see why they couldn't have taken our orders... but you have to order at the bar. Some of the meals were so big that you could easily have gone halves with someone. The steak sandwich won some 'best steak sandwich of 2014' award. It did look pretty impressive and my Nanna seemed to enjoy it (and she took the other half home in a take away container provided by the restaurant). We all ordered at the same time but our meals came out sporadically. Most people were halfway through theirs by the time mine arrived. This always annoys me... Anyway, I got the calamari and it was nice and tender. The chips were fresh and hot. The coleslaw was not very nice at all. The sauce was really runny and it was kind of bland. There was a bit of greenery under a lemon wedge but there should have been twice as much given that the rest of the meal was deep fried! The serving of fish and chips was huge (enough for two). The portion sizes are generous and the food is pleasant enough. The view from the other tables was nice. Parking is easy to get as it is part of a shopping centre (kind of). I would go back here if I was closeby or there was an event or something but I wouldn't go out of my way to come back. It's nothing special - just your typical pub meal.
Brian
Amazing steak sandwich see why it won the best of 2014. Also they have regular specials on pints and to top it off great service and nice atmosphere.
Linda
We stopped in for the first time for lunch on a Sunday and I ordered the Lamb & Rosemary Burger and my partner ordered the Steak Sandwich. Both meals were served on a wooden board with the crispy beer battered chips in wire baskets. The Burger was really yummy and you could taste the rosemary throughout. Along with the cooked onion the burger also had beetroot, melted swiss cheese and delicious mint taztiki. The steak sandwich is massive and the small bit of steak I tried was nice and tender. Really nice setting with the huge windows and views. Also large screens for the sports fans. We will be back.

King Prawns Garluc Sauce. My daughter and I had the Garlic King Prawns with rice as it was gluten-free. It was horrible it tasted like prawns dumped in white sauce and the rice was swimming in the sauce as well. Very bland wont be ordering that again :(

Athomas. Booked for 20 people on Mothers Day. Was a bit worried that service would be slow . The night was fantastic. Lovely food, great service, can not complain about anything. The manager was very attentive and organised, hence the night went off without a hitch. Highly recommend. The good was excellent. Will keep going back.

Catch 22?. Reading all the reviews on here, and in comparison to our own experience I think its safe to say the food can be a bit of a hit and miss (especially the steak sandwiches). Having said that though, food portions are huge! So if you're a student on a budget, there is plenty to share on a plate :)

Lovely steak sandwiches, amazing service.. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed our steak sandwiches. Really great coffee. The ginger beer is alcoholic just a warning for pregnant and breastfeeding mummas. Over all we had a great time and enjoyed the food and service, so much so that we are planning to return with our families. :)

Could not ask for a better place. Went to Karalee on Preston for the second time on Sunday night as my friend and I had to try their 2014 Steak Sandwich of the Year again before the new winner was announced in May.
We made the mistake of also having the Antipasto for Two as entree...or did we? The Antipasti was awesome! Pork belly, chorizo, tiger prawns, squid, toast and some sort of delicious spread. By the time we had gobbled the entire plate between the two of us we had to wait a while and make room for our steak sandwiches.
When the steak sandwiches came out they were just as good as I remembered them the first time. Chips done to crispy perfection, turkish bread nicely toasted with cheese and bacon oozing out of the side as well as a beautifully cooked piece of steak - not overdone, with a glimmer of red down the middle. The only minor complaint I have was that there is not enough tomato sauce served with the chips - had to steal my compatriot's share.
It was a struggle to finish it all, but we did.
Overall, service is fantastic, each time we finished our glasses or plates there was a waiter/waitress there taking them away or asking if we would like a refill.
A+

Very Nice. I went there today for my 39th Birthday and we had a good time.Service was good and all staff had a smile on there face,They have big Screens with Sport on them.Drinks and meals were not bad priced and the Parma was delicious.

Nice steak sandwhich and good service. We went to Karalee for lunch on the weekend and were made welcome by the friendly staff (+1 for child friendly staff). I tried the famed steak sandwich, which did not disappoint. (sidenote: can burger places stop placing a skewer through burgers to hold them together - when you grab on, the sauce always seems to ooze through the hole from the skewer. My partner had the fish of the day which was well fried. The chips are very crispy and a hit all round - a bit too much salt though.

We felt that the sides of salad and vegetables were poor quality, compared to the rest. Some of the broccoli florets and beans were yellow. The veges were probably prepared much earlier (or day before) as they just looked dry and unappetizing. The salad leaves were fresh. We didn't raise this to the staff at the time.

The prices are comparable to establishments of similar quality and surroundings (not cheap to eat out these days), but the serving sizes are quite large. We noticed that the kids meals are quite enormous and reasonably priced at $12. The amount of chips in the kids meal is looked close to double that of the adult meal serve. Both deliciously unhealthy and attractive for the child seagulls.

We'd go back, for the friendly service and try some other dishes.
Perth Girl
Over priced for a pub meal. I think the price should drop and they should provide a standard serving size, I suggest share a meal between two. They are huge! Too much waste!

Always good. I've been going to the Karalee every so often for the past 3 or so years and it never disappoints. After another lovely lunch on the weekend I thought I should write a review. A group of 8 of us went, all ordering differently and everyone was raving about their meals. The staff were friendly and attentive and more than happy to shift tables around to fit us in. The chef came out to ask if our meals were ok - not ok - they were delicious. The steak sandwich is amazing!!!

LUNCH AT KARALEE ON PRESTON. Excellent food and service with great views of the river. We ordered Pork Belly which was beautifully cooked and presented and 'man-sized'. The wait staff were great, very attentive. Definately making a return visit!!

Highly recommended!!

Good! Wonderful lunch!

They must have pulled out all the stops to win best steak sandwich this year... The steak was tender but it's hard not to be when sliced so thinly. The tomato was raw not marinated as stated in the awards description, the rocket was replaced with cheap mesculin salad and when looking for the flavour of porcini mushroom in the home-made BBQ sauce all I could find was an overwhelming taste of sweetness. Disappointing

A real Tavern ... The Karalee is a winner... there is a real buzz whenever you go there. Its a cross between a sports bar and a lounge bar and a great atmosphere. Bar service is the best in the area and whatever they are doing there, both the Windsor and Como pubs both need to take note. Its clean, staff are friendly and prices are normal unlike others. A great place to go and feel comfortable... only downside there is no outside area for non smokers buts ok.. its a great place.
Fuller
Disappointed. Went there for a late lunch today, first time. The girl taking the order should have told us that the meal we ordered came with chips as it is not mentioned anywhere on the menu ( we order a plate of chips $9.00 to go with our steak sandwich) which was wasted. We had the award winning steak sandwich and found it to be oily as it looks like they deep fried the Turkish bread. The oil just dripped out all over our plates. Was really disappointed.

Fest on Prest on. Fond memories of the Karalee from back in the day. I would see my school teachers congregate here for their Friday swim thru and the bottle o would serve us local kids every time, that was @1980.

Anyhow fast forward 3o years, had a charming lunch with 5 others. Meals came out together, tick for that. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered . Portions were good, salads fresh and presentation great.. Friendly efficient staff with an "hands on" manager got the job done. A bit pricey but when it is good and the place is so spotlessly clean you dont mind so much. Busy place, not surprised, thanks.
THE FORK
Excellent service, the young girls are polite and very willing to assist. Food is good, no complaints. Only grumble, the decor is dated and the pub takes little advantage of the views.
Food 2 Run
Loved it, saw on TV voted the best steak sandwich.., came down and wow for sure simply the best... Footy, beer and the best steak sandwich in town... Loved it...

Great Anzac Day lunch. Many times I return home from eating out and feel that Perth eateries are over priced, service is poor and the food is just OK. Not so at the Karalle for lunch on Friday, the staff and the meals were excellent and the menu prices very reasonable.Well done to all at the Karalle.
Jamie Bendall
Favorite Pub Meals. We go there all the time for family dinners and sometimes on a Friday night and who wouldn't with $10 cocktails and they are pretty dame tasty. The menu is always good and would recommend going there for a meal. Keep up the good work
Kem's Food Adventures
Great to have a good local. Consistently good food. Great during footy season with multiple big screens.
Steve Jones
Excellent meal top quality will be going back grear pork belly and rib eye thankyou
Tessabean
Faultless. Had lunch there. Staff were friendly, efficient and professional. Food was served in a timely fashion and was delicious. We had scotch fillet with green peppercorn sauce which was cooked to perfection, also mushroom risotto with truffle oil - again, perfection. Just the right amount of truffle oil. Far exceeded my expectations for a pub lunch.

Improved. After moving to the area six months ago and having less than satisfactory experiences at other local pubs we tried the karalee. We were relatively happy with the food and it was generally pretty easy to get a table. But, what a difference the last three months have made, in a good way! Yes, you have to go to the bar to order, this doesn't bother me in the slightest, but aside from that there now seems to be two floor staff who keep water filled in the glasses, take drink orders at your table and bring them over, clear plates away and generally make you feel at home. The food is comparable in price to all Perth pubs and the quality is good pub food, although the pork belly and steaks are amazing in taste and quality. I like a salad when I go out and I don't like the salad choices there, thats more due to personal taste though. Also they do not have fresh lime for vodka, lime and sodas but this is me being picky. This place has really lifted its game in the last few months and we now come here at least once a fortnight, unfortunately we need to book nowadays si word is getting out. Oh and definitely save room for the chocolate fondue!
Kitty
Hit and Miss. Lovely staff, very pleasant, efficient and happy. But the food always misses out on something. Last week the Seafood Linguine had no walnut pesto or mussels. This week no garlic bread with the tomato and boccocini salad. I had the sweet lip fish and chips with winter slaw. The chef's idea of 'winter slaw' is a pile of lettuce and dressing.

Totally disappointed at this interpretation of 'winter slaw' and very, very tired of lettuce leaves - tasteless and uninspiring. How difficult is it to make a lovely coleslaw or a variation which would just add to the meal. The chef needs to up the standard.
Cheryl Fletcher
Very friendly staff, couldn't do enough for you. Lovely food, very well presented, great view and atmosphere.
Jessie
I have to say I'm not a fan. Poor experience all round. The staff seemed stressed and therefore weren't very friendly (poor things). I ordered the special, what seemed like it was going to be an amazing Surf and Turf. I saw one come out and was stoked.... Unfortunately, the lobster was so overcooked it dissolved into chalk in my mouth. The steak was also over cooked but not as badly, still very tough. The salad on the side was the highlight of the meal. The person I went with did not enjoy their meal either. I felt like a massive inconvenience when I ordered a cocktail. I spent well over $100.
Chloe Goodall
Lovely location, lovely staff, it's a shame the food was so average an bland. We had over cooked steak and lobster and quite an average pub parmigiana.
Joe
Daily Specials. The daily specials at the Karalee are now great. . I've had the American ribs and the Moreton bay bugs recently and they were excellent. I have heard they have a new Chef who has been there a few months and is obviously making a difference here. Worth a visit I reckon.
Alfred
Reasonable Meal. The food and service are not outstanding but nothing to complain.
The restaurant is located in a elevated point so the window view from one side (facing west) is quite open. Unfortunately we were not sitting on that side. Also the blind might close to block the sun in the afternoon or evening.
Can imagine it might be a crowded place during weekend due to its pub and location.
Vicki
Good pub grub!. Always had good food here pretty reasonable price and is really nice when all the windows are open!!
The Deferential Iconoclast
Generally satisfying pub grub. "Little Dessert Spoon" and I have been going to the Karalee for years now. It's a friendly, unpretentious pub/restaurant that generally serves up tasty and generous meals. Whilst their track record is pretty good overall, it must be said that a disappointing meal occasionally slips out of the kitchen.

The meals I've had include the pork belly (generous portion, with a tasty crispy skin), the steak sandwich (good and filling) and the rib-eye steak (ordered medium rare, but unfortunately served medium-well). The salt and pepper squid was served as delicious lightly battered squid pieces one night, then as bog-standard squid rings on the next visit (not sure what was going on there). The chips (good, classic, beer-battered chunky fries) are always a delight though.

The desserts are generally excellent - a big piece of Karalee lemon meringue pie is one of Como's simple pleasures. Just pick out what looks good from the cake display.

You won't find culinary perfection at the Karalee, but you'll (generally) find good, satisfying pub grub that'll leave you with a full stomach and a smile on your face. Just be prepared for the occasional average night.
Simon
WHAT A GREAT VENUE - BEST IN COMO !!!. Found the place to have great views, very affordable drink prices & the meals were better than any other pub we have been to. The place is more than a pub, it feels like a warm local with a restuarant feel.
11/10 the Karalee - definately will be back.
Amanda DiMasi
Really very ordinary. I had the special for lunch, grilled lamb chops with chips, salad & a red wine jus. The jus was awful, you could tell the cook (and I use that word lightly) had just thrown some red into the bottom of the lamb pan and reduced it far to much. It was burnt and had a tar like consistancy. The salad was a couple of rocket leaves a green bean and one olive. The lamb was overdone. Chips were oily. The others at our table also had less than exciting reviews. Food is very very ordinary as is the wine list. This place needs someone to bring it into modern eating times.

DISGRACEFUL. When we got there for a dinner on a Friday night. most people would be going out for something to eat or do. the only people where locals outside chain smoking packets. no table service have to got to the counter to order in a restaurant/pub.....appalling. decided to get the bruchetta as the starter... it was rocket and capsicum..... maybe the chef was from a really different country or something. got the steak for the mains and asked for it medium it came out well done and burnt to the crisp and you know when you burn sausages by accident and can taste that burnt taste that was this steak. the mushroom sauce was pretty much just mushrooms with no sauce.

this place could actually have some potential if they changed the attitude of staff and chefs. i would give it a 1/10 for the nice summer breeze coming through with the windows open. the rest was disgraceful

Ordinary food at an over ordinary price. Go to the Chinese place down the road.

Unpretentiously pleasant. Karalee on Preston, or as it might be more honestly called, the Karalee Tavern, is a good, solid venue for a good, solid pub restaurant meal. I made excellent progress through the Scotch Fillet, an honest cut of meat cooked exactly as requested, although not greatly aided by a fairly innocuous mushroom sauce, accompanied by quite acceptable chips (no, they are not fries, because Perth is not located in the USA, no matter how many battleships are parked at Garden Island), and a smart little salad (if you're the unfortunate kind of person who enjoys such things). My Beloved had the same except for the sirloin with green peppercorn sauce. And most of my salad. Our glasses of Coonawarra house red were adequate but I wouldn't die in a ditch to have them again. One plus, a pleasant view through the upper floor windows across the Swan River, very enjoyable when accompanied by a rare beautiful Perth sunset. Another plus, the charming art deco Cygnet cinema is just across the road. A third plus, good service and attentive staff. One minus, the plates were cold, a basic shortcoming that is distressingly all-too familiar even in better venues. A blowtorch could be applied to the rear parts of all chefs committing this Restaurant 101 faux pa, in my not particularly humble opinion. Therefore, before we finished, our steaks were also cold. Overall though, thoroughly acceptable for what it is. We've been before and we'll come again -- probably before watching a movie as we did on this occasion.

Really solid Australian pub food (steak, chicken, fish). Tasty and not overdone as a lot of pubs seem to do (the masterchef effect).

What sets the Karalee apart is its attentive friendly staff. Great for the kids too.

5 stars. Really welcoming atmosphere. Staff were able to recommend a good wine based on our tastes and the steaks were cooked perfectly. Overall a fantastic view of the river, good food and very helpful service.

It's great that the 'peanut gallery' (smokers and drinkers out the front) have been moved to their own little purpose built room out the side, but that used to be our favourite spot to sit before they remodelled it! You could sit outside in the sun with stunning views of the river. Now we have to be content with sitting inside.
No pleasing some people, I guess!

We used to come to the karalee but after today's meal we will not be dining here anymore, our steak that we ordered as a rare came out well done, dry and chewy I don't usually like spending 10 minutes to chew one bite of steak. All up it was a terrible meal and we will not be coming here anymore

Previous I had the sirloin steak with pepper sauce on the old menu which blew me away every time. I arrived this afternoon with 10 others who had not dined here since the menu was changed. We feel that there must be new chefs to compliment the new menu. I had the new sirloin with sauce and prawns.the Steak was over cooked but just within range to my liking, unfortunately the salad was pathetic and more than 7 chips would have been a delight. The sauce wasn't any better either and it barely dripped down the side of my steak. Overall 6/10 for my dish. Around the table I found that others steaks were dryer and more overcooked than mine and the fish was small and dry and rice overcooked. I don't think we shall dine here again. Good day sir.

The karalee offers a lovely evening out for people wanting a basic pub meal. It's food is delicious and the chef came out and asked us how it was (a great hospitality touch.) we were a little disappointed when we asked the waitress to get the manager, as we had a small problem, and we were told that he was downstairs smoking. However overall the evening was enjoyable. All the bar staff were a delight, making lovely cocktails and overall were very friendly.

-----12 Aug, 2012-----

The food has dropped considerably, in both quality and quantity, since we were last here. A group of friends and I often
Frequent here, for both the Steak and the friendly atmosphere but we were dissapointed by both on our latest return. The staff ranged from friendly to surly, which I guess is to be expected, but perhaps surliness isn't required after the group complained several times about there meals. The steaks, which used to be large, covered in sauce, and cooked to perfection were all over cooked (there were six on our table). One member of our group had the wrong sauce on her steak and was obvious that they just scraped it off and put on a new one as she could still taste it...it was lucky she didn't return it because of an allergy or something more serious, instead of just a preference. This place used to be really nice, but it has really changed, in this groups opinion, for the worst. Please bring back the old food servings, and we will look forward to coming back.

Expensive and overpriced... They have to remember they are serving food in a pub not a high end restaurant!!!

Very generous entree, and delicious mushroom soup. Friendly and helpful staff - what more could you want!

Cool lunch. A nice venue on a hot day - lovely view and air conditioned. Not bad wine list, but food was just ok. Pretty dated menu - balsamic glaze was not even good in the 90's.Quality of fish could have been better.

-----17 Jul, 2012-----

Relaxing. A pleasant place for lunch on a sunny winter's day - good views and full of light. Food was fine - rissotto good, although quite rich. Good selection of wine and service was efficient. Nice place for a leisurely lunch.

Had lunch here with 6 people, generally the waitstaff were polite and attentive. The floor manager however was rude and almost aggressive when we sent back a meal as it was the wrong one. He immediately stormed over and argued with us that that was what we ordered and needed to give him more money for what we actually wanted. Definitely put a dampener on the lunch. Overall couldn't complain about the food, pity all these refurbished pubs think they can charge restaurant prices though while serving pub food.

Service is crap!. Waitress is sucidal, blonde barmaid HIGHLY insulted me and food took an hour to come out and was very average!! good for drinks but way over priced for standard of food.

Eating Out Perth
I Eat Perth. Not much to be said about this place. Yet another renovated pub. Along with fresh paint and LED screens comes the over-priced-super-average menu of meat, frozen seafood and pasta.

Ten years ago you could at least enjoy one of the best traditional pub salad bars in the city. All that's left now is the view.

Theatre Package. Karalee offer a very well priced movie and meal deal in conjunction with the Cygnet theatre across the road.

My wife and I arrived about 5.00pm this evening for a quick meal before a 5.30 movie but that turned out to be too early for food. The manager kindly accepted our reservation for a post-movie meal instead, including noting our choice of food.

We returned at 7.30 and found our reserved table. I advised the order desk that we were there and they asked us to take a seat at our table and wait for our meal. An hour later we were finally served. During the wait none of the staff said anything, asked how we were, explained any delay. Nothing. Just a slightly sheepish grin when the food finally arrived.

I wanted to ask the manager's opinion on why we should choose to dine there again but my wife suggested I don't say anything because they most likely don't care. They seem to have enough business without bothering with us coming back.

My advice is don't go there during a busy period. They seem unable to cope. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area.

Good food, once it arrived. I've been to the Karalee several times for drinks and it's a nice environment with decent prices.
A few of us went there the other night for drinks which lead into dinner. It was a Friday night and quite busy so we were happy to have a couple of rounds while waiting for food. After about 45 mins though we wandered over to see how much longer the meals were going to be, and it seems that somehow our food had disappeared into the ether.
The food manager asked if we could wait at the table while they took a look - the main manager was over a couple of minutes later and he apologised for what had happened and comp'd us a round of drinks which made it ok (seeing as we weren't in any rush). He also had our entrees out in the next couple of minutes, and the mains cooking straight away.
So a bit disappointing that the first order disappeared, however they handled it well once it was brought to their attention and the meals were good when they arrived.

Good meal. We also had the bangers and mash and the pork belly. No complaints other than peas would have complemented the bangers. Big meals. Friendly service.

Not again I am sure the kitchen hands that prepared our meals did the best they can, but the place is in need of a chef!! Rib eye that was not much thicker than minute steak, chewy like gravy beef. My wife had salt and pepper squid which the squid was nice, yet it was cold when she got it, bonus of nice hot chips but. Friends had chicken Parma which was very large but size did not mean quality. Garlic prawns were ok but lacking in garlic. I will go to watch the entertainer and drink the drinks again but if I am hungry when I'm there I will go to the subway over the road.

We'll be back. We dropped in for a quick meal before going to the movies at the Cygnet! The service was fast and friendly. The Karalee is a lovely space with windows that actually open and a variety of seating options including a tiny outside dining area.

I ordered pork belly with red cabbage and my husband had bangers & mash. My pork belly piece was huge - half the size would have been ample and came with a whole apple on top - a few slices artfully arranged would have been slightly more sophisticated! However the meat was beautiful - a nice thick piece (which I find difficult to buy at my usual meat outlets) and the cabbage was delicious - sweet but tangy.

My hubby declared that the bangers were some of the best he'd ever had - high praise. His mash was delicious!

For dessert we had coffee and a piece of cake to share. I hadn't told the girl who took the dessert order that it was to share but, obviously due to previous dessert incidents, it came out with 2 sets of cutlery.

We were really happy with the service, and the quality of the food. If they could just get the smokers to go & do their stuff somewhere else it would be perfect!

Really good service. The guy paul running the place is a real nice guy, knows his stuff and gave us excellent customer service. Food a tad pricey but i like the homely feel.

Woah I'm shocked by the percentage of voters who like this place. Firstly I'm a local of Como and I cringe everytime at the red-faced, chain smoking locals who clog up the walkway at Preston street shops. Secondly, based on the poorly prepared steaks my partner and I had, we won't be returning.

Great view and the service was lovely.me and my vegetarian partner went for a mid week meal and I was not impressed when all she could order for a main was a caesar salad with no bacon. My sauteed pork was tough and I don't think we will be back.

The kasundi had none of the spiciness I would expect in this Indian relish and the chickpeas had that flavourless powderiness I can only expect came from a can. The calamari was ever so slightly overcooked and chewy. Not a good start.
