This is not a restaurant for the faint hearted. Owned by Aussie Thaiophile chef David Thompson, it is a fun place to go – loud, brash and unashamedly like a street style cafe. The food is authentic in looks, flavour and spice – it is HOT, you know, Silom Road hot, so if you can’t take spicy food, then maybe this is not the best choice for you.
*Rating is a 4.5*
Came for dinner for 4 on a Friday night. We were promptly seated by our friendly host and proceeded to order: vege spring rolls (standard), green papaya salad (absolutely delicious), green curry (good), charred noodles (delicious) and Siamese watercress (very tasty, funnily enough this side dish was my favourite thing we ordered). Dessert was a bit less appealing so we skipped this. Overall the dishes were balanced, flavour packed, but it felt like there was a limited selection of options on the menu compared to previous visits (over a year ago admittedly). The restaurant itself is very funky and has a distinctly ‘Melbourne-like’ vibe which I love. Service was excellent. Definitely worth a visit.
Exceptional !!! As always! Service was awesome as well. This place is the best Thai you will ever eat. Flavour explosion.

One of our favourite places – in the basement of the restored State Buildings Long Chim is turning out the best Thai food in Perth, in a great location – you can eat at the bar, in the restaurant proper between the arches, or out in the courtyard, weather permitting – it has something for everyone, so long as you enjoy food in the robust Bangkok street style – spicy, at times hot, but always full of authentic aromatic and zesty Thai flavours.
First time eating at Long Chim. Since I am not from Perth, it took me some time to go d it. You have to look for stairs going down.
The restaurant is dimly lit. Service is good and staff attentive.
I have ordered the Thai seafood laksa. The broth is richer compared to Malaysian laksa. The bowl of laksa came piping hot with vermicelli noodles, seafood balls, prawns and very spicy coconut soup. Compliment the fiery dish with lemongrass drink.
Overall very tasty and spicy. Highly recommended.
Oh wow this place is amazing. We came here for dinner on Friday night. We managed to reserve a table inside for 8pm. The lighting is dim and the restaurant is cosy and romantic. The staff were all lovely and the food was absolutely freaking delicious!! I highly recommend giving this place a visit. The octopus and every other grilled item was a 10/10 and they had no issue with serving the sauces on the side!
Headed to Long Chim on a busy friday without a booking and they were able to squeeze us in with a short wait at the bar. Both alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks were delicious with hints of asian fruits and spices such a kafir like and nutmeg.
Service was impeccable, while we were waiting they would check on us every 5 or 10 mins to make sure we knew we hadn't been forgotten. They were all very knowledgeable on menu items and made suitable recommendations.
Food came out quickly and I couldnt fault any of it. The crunchy prawns, squid and duck fried rice were cooked to perfection. Id probably chose a curry instead of the lemongrass fish next time but it was still tasty.
Loved the ambiance of this place and the great customer service. We ordered green thai curry, pad thai, pineapple pork curry, and chinese broccoli with pork. Most of the food was great (except for the other dish we had that had scrambled eggs that tasted a littler burnt)!! I didnt think it was worth it since the serving was small and the price is mostly expensive.
Was put off by so, so many comments - mostly price wise - about Long Chim, but I’m glad I did.
The service is fantastic, first off. My crustacean allergy was considered and handled with an email of the menu specifically highlighting which items I should avoid, and which I should be aware of. Aside from attention to detail, the service was unobtrusive, friendly and extremely pleasant. This alone stands well above the rest of Perth.
The cocktails we got were very, very nice. Well made, well balanced and just delicious and easy to drink.
We had the fragrant chicken satay, duck fried rice, pork pineapple curry, papaya salad. The food is great. Expensive, yes, but it was well worth it, considering the two stunning desserts we ordered.
The sticky rice with mango is one of the best things I’ve had in a while, the mango is sweet, ripe and tender. The sticky rice is salty, creamy and delightfully chewy and rich. The thai tea ice cream is in a league of its own. Incredibly flavourful, smooth and delicious.
Good God, simple delicious food done incredibly well. Will be back!
Long Chim had the best customer service I’ve had in a long time - the staff were bubbly, friendly and engaging, the atmosphere was great and the food was lovely.
Both times at restaurant have been outstanding. This is my new favourite Asian cuisine in Perth both for work events and date night. Love the set menu options providing a variety of scrumptious dishes and the cocktails were top notch. Friendly, helpful service, decor is impressive and ambiance is spot on.
Went on a busy Saturday night without a booking and was able to be seated outside. We were right under the heaters so wasn’t cold at all. It was a bit hard to get service as the waitresses were always busy. The food was amazing and authentic. We had the grilled octopus, smashed prawn curry and papaya salad. All three dishes were delicious. The non-alcoholic cocktails we ordered were average. I would definitely be returning for the food!
Got the chance to try out Long Chim during a recent trip to Perth. We dined in on a Sunday night and enjoyed two starters and three larger dishes which was perfect for two people. The food itself tasted great and the portions were larger than I expected. The place itself is set in the basement of the treasury building and had a great atmosphere, being quite lively for a Sunday night. Would recommend!
This is quite simply the most beautiful Thai food ive ever eaten. Ive spent a lot of time in thailand and they have faithfully recreated the flavours with top shelf ingredients.
Love this place. Bring your wallet - it aint cheap but theres a reason for that. Its amazing.
Good date night with my husband, the staff are always knowledgeable with the wine selection and food is always delicious. A good dinner recommendation in Perth which is casual yet delicious.
Waitresses are very friendly and efficient! Food are very nice, unlike usual Thai food it is quite creative and tasty! Lucky we went early as it get really busy around 7, very nice white wine! The hotel itself is modern n elegant.... next time will go early to have a drink on the lounge
Special night as a gift.
Caught the Red cat bus from West Perth.
Easy walk from there.
LONG CHIM is situated down stairs in the state buildings might have a cellar , has been well designed lovely long cocktail bar.
We had a lovely meal the fish ball and prawn laska.
It was enormous
Needed the raw papaya salad to chill the mouth.
Had an enjoyable evening
I tasted many dishes here as part of a fantastic degustation menu.
STIR FRIED MUSSELS WITH CHILLI JAM - really appreciated this dish, so yummy.
A dish of STIR FRIED WATERCRESS with garlic and yellow beans.
Crunchy tiny prawns with herbs and chillies, a very good starter!!!
BEEF SKEWERS with turmeric, cumin and coriander - a nice starter.
CHIANG MAI LARP OF CHICKEN which was TOO hot and you even could not ask to make it less spicy.. who knows why..
A delicate COCONUT AND TURMERIC CURRY OF CHICKEN at Long Chim. Very good and delicate flavor. Loved it.
Delicious dinner. Pricey but worth a visit. Enjoyed the vibe and services. The waiter spilled water onto my leg and shoe (accidentally)..was thinking a bad way to start
my dinner but the food were delicious and he offered free cocktail so that made it even better.
We went for a drink after dinner at Wildflower. The courtyard with the umbrellas was a great place for a drink. Menu looked good for a return visit.
The ambience was amazing. Loved the large selection of cocktail and wine list. The service staffs were very helpful and accommodating. The food was too sweet for my taste but well balanced on the spices. Its not terrible food, just not made to my taste. My friends enjoyed the food. Would definitely recommend others to give it a go for the ambience.
Food that i had: beetle leaf, fish cake, chicken satay, red chicken curry, 3 flavour fried fish, jack omelette, yang pa salad, mango sticky rice and coconut cake
Fresh & very tasty Thai! Restaurant & ambiance and service was also top notch. There is also a nice bar to drink at within the same establishment. I would return.
Was really looking forward to this visit and still walked away stunned. The set menu was recommended by the very helpful and friendly staff and is an excellent way to try a variety of offerings. Each dish was perfectly prepared and presented from the plain old chicken skewers to the coffee ice cream dessert. Lovely staff, atmosphere and food. Wether you like Thai food or not you should try this place
Been wanting to try out this place for ages and finally made it here on a weekend night. The restaurant was super busy. Food were delicious and flavorsome. Serving potion slightly small and more pricey compare to other Thai restaurant. Lovely atmosphere and very friendly staffs and service.
Went there as a surprise birthday dinner. Food was great however they forgot our green curry had to ask for it and couldn’t even provide rice with it since they didn’t take it out to us in time the rice had already been eaten. So we had the curry by itself.
Organised a surprise dessert with a candle. They served our plates on the table first which made it really obvious for the birthday guy that there was a cake or something coming. Kind of pissed me off a bit since they knew. And destroyed the little surprise that it was.
Food flavour on the other hand was really spicy and definitely something different. Location is amazingly beautiful. A must try.
If your idea of Thai food is the typical bits of chicken floating in pale green coconut cream from the standard fair Australian Thai kitchen, then read no further - this restaurant is not for you. I am a keen follower of David Thompson's recipes and reproduce a good number of dishes from his books. Last night I finally got the opportunity to find out what the restaurant could teach me about how it should be done. I went pre-prepared with a selection of 12 dishes (enough for 7-8 adults). Wow - it certainly was good! A revelation on what Thai food should be.
We started with cocktails and I can recommend the Tropical thunder (had to have two).
The grilled chicken is crispy skinned, moist and delicious, a superb choice for those not too keen on chilli. My 10 year old daughter is hooked and it's a recipe I'm keen to emulate at home. The Crispy prawns are exactly that and full of flavour but be prepared to eat the school prawns whole, the heads and shells are where the flavour really is, a point lost on many people I know. The sour orange fish curry, the Snapper Tom Yum, chinese brocolli & pork, Roast pork and roast duck were absolute stand-outs. The food makes your taste buds sing with fresh lime, mint, coriander, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, fish sauce, palm sugar and of course chilli.
The most important thing I think about this restaurant is that if the staff tell you a dish is hot, they mean just that. I like chilli and cook with it a lot but some of these dishes are not for the faint hearted - just as I've had them served to me by Thai friends. You may even need to take a turn outside to cool a sweated brow but let me assure you, if you like authentic Thai food, this place is unmissable,
The only thing I wouldn't order again were the beef skewers which were a touch bland and could have been more tender. The baked prawns in glass noodles can be a trap when sharing with a large table - there are only three prawns.
At Long Chim if you find the fire too hot - you're in the wrong kitchen! Can't wait to go back!
My son and I opted for the $45 per head lunchtime set menu. This saved time poring over the a la carte menu and also allowed us to sample dishes we might not have tried otherwise. I confess to being a longtime fan of David Thompson's TV persona which showcases his vast knowledge of Thai culture and cuisine.
I believe that to truly appreciate Mr Thompson's genius, it probably helps (but is not essential) to have some experience of eating Thai food in Thailand. Eating Thai food in Australia is not usually an authentic experience in the same way that eating Indian or Mexican in Australia amounts to eating an interpretation of the real deal. Eating versions of a cuisine can certainly be enjoyable.....very enjoyable in fact, but this is testament to the chef's skill, invention and knowledge of the target market, not authenticity.
As a Thai restaurant, Long Chim is 'true to label' because of the esteemed owner's affinity for and deep knowledge of Thai street food. Yes, many of the dishes are liberally laced with radioactive chillis due to Long Chim's apparent philosophy that authenticity trumps mass appeal. If you want a Western representation of Thai cuisine, a folly that falls short of assaulting your tastebuds, not to mention your central nervous system, there are plenty of pseudo-Thai alternatives. However, if you have experienced sitting on infant-sized plastic chairs in one of Bangkok's insalubrious dark alleys, eating unrecognisable, yet obscenely flavoursome morsels, Long Chim actually provides an inexpensive and flight-free solution to rekindling such wonderful food memories.
Crunchy prawns, beef skewers, glass noodle salad, pork & pineapple curry and stir fried cabbage provided everything Thai food has the potential to offer. Texture (especially crunch!), charcoal notes, acerbic citrus, sweet, salty and, of course, fiery! If this combination is perfectly balanced, the end result is 'flavour on steroids'. It was!
This gastronomic treat was completed by the Thai coffee ice cream dessert. Strong yet sweet coffee flavour offset by the textural accompaniment of peanuts, sweetcorn kernels and shaved coconut.
Yes, we enjoyed our meal immensely but I believe that appreciation is enhanced if you have had experience of eating real Thai food in Thailand. David Thompson wants his patrons to savour a real and ultimately more rewarding Thai dining experience.
Mission accomplished I say!
Absolutely amazing Thai food. Pricey but worth every cent for the amazing food, service and decor. I have never tasted Thai food as good as this in Australia. They are not shy on the spice which is how it should be, nothing is toned down for the Australian palate unlike many other Thai restaurants. The Chiang Mai chicken larb packs a real spicy punch, but the flavour is outstanding. Every dish is modern but authentic, a top class experience.

Food was very tasty indeed. Ordered prawn and fish curry laksa. Hardly any prawns, merely pieces of it. But very delicious! Dessert was reduced coconut cream with palm sugar and grated coconut. This was the highlight of the outing. Absolutely amazing!
For Thai cuisine the menu is exceptionally pricey! The service was lacking but the ambiance and deco was spot on.
6 out of 10
Nice Thai food and good ambience. Was buzzing on a Friday night. It is in the new como the treasury building in the basement. Try the prawns and coconut drink
The ambience/decor/look of the place is 10/10. It's definitely a place you'd go if you wanted to impress someone. The food is also fabulous. My partner and I are used to asking for extra chilli at most restaurants, but all the dishes we ordered had a good amount of heat (but if you prefer your food milder, the staff will warn you, and I'm sure they would be happy to accommodate). We got this little condiments tray with dried chilli, chilli oil, fish sauce and sugar, so you could balance out your dish however you prefer it. Yes it is a little on the pricy side, the portions are pretty small, but we left happy.
I love Thai food. And this defenitly my favorite Thai place in Perth. Although their food is a bit pricey, but it worth the price. Service was great and staffs were friendly.
Had lunch with hubby and loved it. We had the $68 set menu and it was a delightful way to taste various dishes. The Crispy Prawn starter is a lovely dish. The Northern Pork Curry was my favourite main dish. Liked the atmosphere and the Wait staff are very professional.
Would definitely go again.
After hearing about how great there laksa was...decided to visit this place and give it a go...very nice and modern venu...good vibe...nice staff...had the chilli Prawns and pork skewers as entré...very tasty! Prom skewers quite small for the price...orders pad Thai and the laksa for main...pad Thai nice...nothing amazing...on the other hand the laksa to me was a let down...it looked like a very heavy red curry...very pasty...didn't enjoy the flavours at all...barely ate it unfortunately...would return to try other dishes but will definitely not get the laksa
Much better than expected, great flavours and decent portions for the set menu, good and quick service, great that spiciness and heat are turned up high as opposed to many places. The staff do warn punters how hot some dishes are, yet the homebrewing bore sitting next to us still had a winge about it.
Overall, reccommend
Very good Thai restaurant. Although the servings are small and a bit pricey, everything we have tried was delicious. Definitely order the crispy roast pork, roast duck, soft shell crab. Their whole fish with 3 sauces is a little bit on the dry side. Their Thai milk tea is spot on. Pity they don't have coconut rice! Will visit again!
What a funky little spot. I'd heard of Long Chim by watching David on Masterchef and knew I had to give his restaurant a go. I love Thai food and this did not disappoint. I started with the crunchy prawns that had a good kick to them and moved onto the classic Pad Thai! Delicious!!! I also had the Tamarind soda and holy moly.... next time I'll be requesting that in a 10 litre bucket 😋
Excellent food and service. The pork rice cracker dish was a stand out. Amazing Asian inspired cocktails. Good, if not a little overbearing service....but the staff handled dietary requests well. It won't be a cheap night out - but worth it! Was nice to get some spicy Asian food for a change!!
I'll be upfront and honest with the dishes. We tried the Maa Long Chim which to my dismay was just above average. Unfortunately out of all dishes, the Chiang Mai Larp of Chicken was not enjoyable at all. It was the spiciest dish on the menu and I was already getting worried of how spicy could the other dishes be. It was inedible and way too spicy for my liking (if you like to sweat and tear up, by all means). The rest of the dinner was well done and maintained a homely feeling. The menu ended with a very pleasing coconut cake which I wished I had more space for. Overall, I'm quite solid on a 3.5 but i would definitely come back again to try out the other a la carte menu items.
Amazing staff and the food is hot hot hot! Was such a nice surprise to get a spicy larb that's actually hot! The flavours take me straight back to Thailand. Great atmosphere
I've decided to give this place a try after stumbling upon it venturing into the building. First impression, the ambience of the place gave the feeling that you're traipsing into a high-end side-street hawker avenue. Loved the feel as the decor seem to give promise of an authentic food.
My partner and I decided to walk-in and got a table very quickly on a Saturday night. We had both agreed to try the Maa Long Chim (come sample and taste) 3 course meal.
As soon as we ordered, we were given an early warning that one of the dishes has quite a fiery taste. Let me tell you we did not anticipate how spicy it got when it hit our palate. That was the Chiang Mai Larp of Chicken. I was able to savour the chicken briefly before being flooded by the spiciness, even the cabbage wrap could not douse the fire. Needless to say, I wasn't a big fan of that meal. The Crunchy Prawn and Grilled Pork on skewers definitely hit all the right spots with the flavours.
The mains came and the table was graced by a bowl of rice, Thai Green Curry of Chicken, Stirfried Siamese Watercress, Minced Prawn and Pork Soup, and Deep Fried Fish with 3 flavour sauce. The winner in this course were the Watercress and the P&P soup. They were just bursting with flavours! However, I found the green curry lacking in taste and the fried fish did not do justice with the sauce. Saowanee in North Perth wins hands down.
Lastly, we had the Coconut cake with coconut shavings. It was a nice end to a crescendo of flavour.
We had a great time with some non-alcoholic drinks and the spicy dish certainly burnt itself to our palate memory!
This was my fourth time at Long Chim and the food did not disappoint. Absolutely divine and our waiter, who had only been there for 3 weeks was outstanding. His knowledge of the menu and ingredients was impressive. We had a family group with children for dinner and the waitstaff were welcoming and accommodating. Will be back again... and again... cannot recommend highly enough even for the most discerning of Asian customers - even my 80 yo Asian mother gave it the tick of approval!
Pretty good most of the time, the restaurant manager is a bit of a pretentious arse. The food is good though, mild for Thai food, but tasty and worth the price.
Heard great things and we were eager to try. The venue, ambience and service were great, a table of 4 we ordered the deep fried squid, which was tasty although not as spicy as I had hoped, stir fried Chinese broccoli absolutely delicious with chunks of hidden pork belly, prawn and fish dumpling laksa, a generous serve with great taste, red curry of roast duck - just OK, green curry of chicken nice flavour and the fried rice of crab meat enjoyable (fav dish) - we really wanted the mussaman but they were sold out. This was followed by banana roti - sticky and sweet and a coffee type ice cream a little strong (they were also sold out of mango sticky rice). With a bottle of wine, couple of beers and a cocktail or 2 it was about $100 each.. I liked it - but not sure if I'd book again I found Galangal in Mt Hawthorn just that much better in flavour
I visited here for a birthday lunch and decided to eat at the bar. It is a very beautiful location and interesting design for a restaurant. I believe the food lacked some flavours and didn't hit key aspects; sweet, sour, salty and spicy. Understanding it is located in an upmarket part of Perth the prices are going to be high, but this is quite steep. Service was very friendly and kind. Being half Thai and knowing you are able to pay $3-5 max for a street pad thai hitting the tastebuds. I will stick to the lower price range of thai food such visiting Thailicious in northbridge. I still recommend coming for a drink.
An amazing dinner with great company. Incredible and tasty food with wonderful cocktails to boot. Beautiful and fresh surrounds with all of the best service we will be back here soon.
The most amazing Thai food I've ever eaten!
Long chim, didn't disappoint! The food was FULL of flavour, spice and texture. Genuine Thai food, which I couldn't be happier about. We had a great waiter who knew everything there was to know about the whole menu, and was great with recommendations.
Service was always available, my glasses of water and wine were never empty, and the waiter was never too far away if you have a question. My only negative was the price, but the quality of food and service definitely discounted that. I highly recommend this restaurant for all types of occasions. Will definitely be back 👏🏼👏🏼
Turned up without having made a booking and still managed to get a table without a wait.
The food was amazing and the staff were very friendly and informative about each dish.
Lovely staff, awesome atmosphere, nicely tucked away. Food was quite tasty, but small servings. Pricing a little on the pricey side but venue is impressive. When they say hot, they mean hot - great for the spice lovers. Will be back again soon for sure!
On arrival the place doesn’t look overly large, but then there is another very large dining area adjacent. Dinning on a Wed night I was surprised how busy it was; not a single spare table. That made me expect some wonderful things. We went shared style and ordered the crunchy prawns and fish cakes for starters, and for the mains, grilled lamb ribs, roast duck red curry, deep fired whole fish, green papaya salad, and rice. Our waiter was friendly and attentive and suggested the papaya salad, which having read the reviews on here, we asked to be dialed down in chilies, which they did. Our starters were both excellent, and not at all as spicy as we thought they might be. Fish cakes got a “big thumbs up” and comments “the best fish cake I’ve ever had!” They were excellent with nice chunks of fish. Our mains came out all at once. We felt there were definitely two stars for the night, but my absolute favourite was the lamb. It was so delicately soft and so full of flavour, it was truly a special dish. The pickles gave the dish nice acidity. The next star, was the roast duck red curry. It was wonderful and again, we were surprised that the spiciness wasn’t as high as we’d thought it might be. The fish was good, but felt it was slightly overcooked. The salad was nice and fresh and gave some good crunchy texture to the dishes. We had a nice crispy white wine that complimented the dishes nicely. Overall, the foods were well balanced in flavour and all our plates went back the kitchen completely empty, and all 3 of us were completely full. Spiciness factor was enjoyable, but certainly not overwhelming like some reviews suggest. It is probably all relative to what you can handle. Pricewise we paid $94 for two drinks each, so given it is not your cheap and cheerful Thai, it is reasonable. The ambience, food and wine and wonderful service makes this place a winner! Definitely be back.
This place is simply amazing.
Exceptional service, decor, food and drinks.
A bit on the pricey side but well worth it
"I asked for something with ginger and I got something with gin" - not a bad mistake to kick off the night. Great atmosphere here was the winner, with runners up being the cocktails and the food. Everything was delicious although a bit limited on the veg options.
Nestled in the basement of the State Buildings, David Thompson’s Thai street food joint comes with a serious reputation. While it might not be the prices normally associated with this style of food, it ensures that it still delivers with quality produce and flavour.
Nice and great people watching. The food was not that hot and great drinks!
Damn duck was yummo but should chop out $5.
Great veg and dessert to die for.
The food was great, the cocktails divine, it wasn't too noisy considering the concrete floor so we could actually hold a conversation.
However, I found it to be a little over priced, and the service was not attentive. We would have had dessert, but after getting a desert menu, and then waiting almost 20 mins without having our order taken, we decided to go elsewhere for a nightcap.
Full marks on ambience. Music, murals, lighting, colour, all used to great effect. Lots of heat in the food. Maybe a tad much in the fish curry but the duck fried rice and glass noodles with squid were well balanced in flavour and texture. A lovely cool subterranean retreat from the summer sun.
This place definitely lived up to the hype. We had the char noodles and roast duck and fried rice. Packed full of flavour! Dessert was coconut cake and the sticky rice! So delicious. Our waiter was super friendly and helpful. Decor is cute and love the outdoor area as well as the cellar style restaurant. Some people have been put off by the cost of meals but I would say, it is 100% worth it. Cant wait to go back!
If atmosphere is what you're after, then this place doesn't disappoint! Long Chim boasts a very cool layout, but that doesn't mean that taste is sacrificed. I found the food to be exploding with flavour and quite generous serving sizes. On the pricier side for Asian eats, but I would definitely return. The staff were also very friendly!
I had no idea this place existing, hidden under the treasury building. I was taken there for the "feed me" option for my 30th birthday.
We were given a variety of dishes, all were on the spicy side. We were asked how we liked our heat and I said mild to medium and they said that everything was pretty hot - so not sure why they asked...?
Everything was quite tasty but there was no standout dish of the night that I would be desperate to go back for.
My friend rang ahead and explained it was my 30th and asked for something special to be done with my dessert or embarrass me in some way but it didn't happen, which was a bit disappointing as they said they would do something. It really didn't matter but just a bit of a downer for him when he thought it would be something extra to add to my bday.
Very cool venue, you feel like you're in Melbourne when inside. A great addition to the Perth food scene.
TGIF! We ended our first work week by splurging on good food. We were brought to this upscale Thai resto called Long Chim by our colleague Eelai, who’s practically a local in Perth given her extensive knowledge of the resto and bar scene downtown. Here, we cleaned out our per diem but it was well worth it!
The food has a wonderful taste, quality ingredients and well presented. Had to sit at the bar but that is ok as it has a good atmosphere. Servings were generous and the staff were great. Not a fan of spicy or hot food - you can select around that and still enjoy things. Only issue is the price - for me anyway.
I actually really enjoyed the food at Long Chim. I thought everything tasted really authentic and the flavour level was consistently a 10 all night. The negatives for me had nothing to do with the food - if i was going to score them on food alone they would get a 5/5. We booked on a Saturday night and got the first sitting. We were told that we only had two hours, as a lot of restaurants around Perth are doing these days. We ordered our mains promptly and in my opinion did not eat slow or delay the meal at all. When it came time to dessert, which we definitely wanted, the servers were reluctant to take our order, as we may "go over our 2 hours allocated". I don't think we need to be "punished" when the servers took a long time to take our order etc. We got our dessert but we shouldn't have had to make such a fuss about it. The other negative is that it is quite expensive. There are definitely other thai restaurants around town offering authentic and tasty food for half the price.
Cool lively place. Was packed at dinnertime on a weeknight but service was still good and the food comes out quickly. You get seated pretty close to randoms. Food is expensive and portions are small but packed full of flavour. The chiang mai larp was so delicious. I'd go back just for that. Try the chilli cocktail :)
Had an absolutely lovely time here, had a excellent waiter names Natalie she was so sweet and accomodating and new the cocktail menu back to front. Thanks Natalie!
Dear Long Chim, thank you for the delicious food and fun-filled Friday night atmosphere, made me think I'd taken a detour to Surry Hills or Brunswick for the night... Lots of ticks for: crunchy prawns (fresh, herby and of course crunchy), green curry of chicken (not your usual sweet sickly sauce, but rich coconutty and savoury - though I could've done with an extra lime leaf or thai basil leaf or two, my friends didn't think so), mai larp of chicken (very hot, so be warned), papaya salad fresh but not great and deep fried fish (with rich sticky sauce - yum). Cocktails were pretty darn good too. And the service was super friendly too. There were three of us and all were in agreeance: YUM! We'll be back.
Walking home from a wine tasting event towards the Perth train station, we looked at each other and said simultaneously – “I’m starving”! Hence a quick detour into the State buildings and down the stairs to Long Chim. We chose two dishes – the steamed curry of barramundi and the mashed prawn curry.
I had a mixed experience with Long Chim - I had lunch on a Saturday (mussaman curry) which was incredible, but then I returned next week for a work lunch which was very disappointing. We had a table of 9 booked for 1pm, got there at 12:55pm and ordered. My order (pad thai) came at 1:50pm, long after everyone else, and it tasted charred as if it had been left cooking way too long. My tip - order the curries, stay away from the left side of the menu!
Ive been wanting to come here for a very long time however its always been fully booked! I finally got my chance to go for my pre birthday celebration and it was definitely worth the wait. I dont eat beef but my friend said the beef skewers were cooked to perfection! We shared the crunchy prawns which were whole with some deep fried basil leaves, be warned this is spicy, down with the watermelon and gin highball and youll be fine 😉
For our mains we shared the green chicken curry with eggplant and the fried rice with roast duck. Ive honestly never had a better cooked duck in my life! I would purely come back here just for this! The green curry was delicious but I was so full I focused mainly on the fried rice.
It was an awesome experience one that Ill keep coming back for.
Awesome place and atmosphere. Pretty average service, all staff with the exception of 1 were void of any warmth at all. Chicken larb was super hot, which is cool, because it's what I expected but was also a bit on the bland side. Fish cakes were good. Pork and prawn noodles weren't fantastic and the prawns tasted like they were frozen. Green curry was decent, you can tell that most - if not all the food is made from scratch... You can hear the mortar and pestles banging away in the background. I swear even booking a month ahead they managed to give us the worst table in the place. Staff weren't too keen to clear plates, finally at the very end of the meal one staff member asked if we wanted anything else and took our plates and went to get the receipt but never came back. We walked to the front of the restaurant to pay at the till and the manager was actually excellent, he was the first person to ask if the meals were OK and I told him we'd been looking forward to coming for a while but felt a bit let down by the experience. He took a substantial amount off the bill, which he certainly didn't have to do and was very apologetic. Definitely redeems things a touch.
We read some of the reviews after we'd already booked for dinner here and considered cancelling but so very glad we didn't!
This isn't the kind of place you go to if you're wanting a cheap meal but if you love and appreciate good food, you must go here!
We had the Chive Patties and Pork Sausage for entree, and the Crab Rice and Prawn Laksa for mains. All were delicious but the Laksa was INCREDIBLE!
$156 for two entrees, 2 mains and a bottle of wine when the food was fabulous, the service impeccable and the ambience just perfect is money well spent in my eyes.
Will definitely be back!
Lets start with the positives; friendly professional service and great ambience/decor.
Good selection wines and drinks.
Now the not so positive
The food was good but not great; doesnt compare to the likes of Jinda Thai in Melbourne and the prices were very high for the quantity and type of food. Food was tasty although in some case over chillied and yes they say it is hot and I have lived in Indo China region and love my chilli but it was used in a way such that it overshod all the other beautiful flavours in the dish.
I would not rush back.
Great place to dine. Attentive service, brilliant food. We had a selection of small plates including the Chicken Larb. So very hot, but still tasty. Highly Recommended.
We have been waiting a long time to get into Long Chim, so 4 of us went along on Saturday night. Overall it was ok, but not worth the $$. The food was nice, but nothing really stood out as being outstanding (blame the hype for that) The deep Fried fish was really nice, as were the fish cakes. But apart from those two everything else was fairly standard.
The service is what really let the place down. Tardy with taking orders, bringing out "main" dishes when the entire table is still covered with dirty bowls from the "entree" - simply pushing the new meals on the table making us sit and hold the empty plates, no attention to how drinks were going on the table.
Would we go back? Maybe, but there are other places serving just as good (if not better) for less
Long chim, short story. This is my kinda food if you don't like a Chili hit, go to Chinese.. This street Thai style nosh burns you good,
it is a tad pricey.
Went for a quick Friday lunch in the outdoors section. A good selection of curries to choose from. Had the pork curry which was full of flavour, no heat though but they have a big pot of chilli you can add. Prices are less than the sit down restaurant and the atmosphere is really relaxed. A great spot for lunch in the city.
Surprised at the number of negative reviews. For me the food and atmosphere would be 4.5/5 - it's only the high prices that knock it down a peg. We had a great dinner at the weekend: yes it was nearly $400 for four of us but the food was great, we had more than we could eat and that included wine (I couldn't order the set menu because I'm veggo but my friends did and it is great value). It's not somewhere I could afford to eat every weekend but I'll be back every now and again for sure.
I do like the atmosphere there. Staff here are friendly and considerate. I strongly recommend the stired water grass and prawn curry. But the Thai ice tea is so sweet for me.
The service was outstanding and the interior was really funky, which creates a very cool atmosphere. Unfortunately the food is overpriced and average. However the dessert was amazing, we ordered the banana roti and coconut cake which were very delicious. The whole experience was still good overall.
This restaurant has amazing decor and vibe. It's pretty cool. We were warned about the spice of food and tried to choose mild dishes but unfortunately still needed to ask for a glass of milk! Food is authentic and shouldn't be criticised but unfortunately it's just too hot for my taste buds.
Had the chicken larb which had amazing flavour but the chilli is ridiculous. Then had the prawn curry. $45 for three prawns, not acceptable, sorry. It was a beautiful dish though. Service and venue very nice but won't return because simply poor value for money.
First time coming here. Have been trying to get into this place for a long time. Weekends are always busy. Even tonight it was busy. Just as well I had made a reservation. Staff are friendly and our food and drinks came quite promptly. I ordered the virgin mary. One if the best I had in a while, loved the extra kick of the spice.
Between the three of us, we ordered a vegetable curry, stir fried chinese broccoli with crispy pork (which in other asian term is roast pork) in oyster sauce, grilled pork skewers, and charred noodles with chicken and squid. Grilled pork was very tasty, the stir fried vegetable was quite ordinary, the vegetable curry was delicious and had a nice spice to it, the char grilled noodles smelled delicious on arrival to our table, although quite tasty could do with less salt.
Didn't have the stomach to have dessert as we were stuffed. Would definitely come and try other dishes and the dessert.
Authentic Thai food but the price is steep and serving could be bigger given the price. Cool interior with a nice ambience
The food was good, but the price wasn't great. You can get equally great food at a much cheaper price. Saying that, the wait staff were fantastic! Really helpful, and the food came out quickly. We weren't left waiting for anything.
Great night with totally authentic food! Really enjoyed all the meals with the darl and the drinks too. I loved how they didn't hold back on the chilli as that's what I'd expect in such a restaurant but generally disappointed in Perth when they temper the heat and recipe for our palate!! Deeelishous Dad
Feb 2016 - Fantastic flavours, funky decor and vibe and good service.
Every dish we tried had bags of flavour and they don't hold back on the heat. If you take a group of people, the share menu is incredible value for this quality in the CBD.
Oh and they make good cocktails apparently!
The food here rocks with flavour and plain enjoyment in a great setting oozing a warm ambience. Sure, it is not cheap, but still, our entire experience was outstanding. The beef curry was tougher than expected but was happily taken back and replaced with duck curry. Saw a good number of people each eating their own food. Man, this place is for sharing! Too many lovely dishes! Had Green Papaya Salad and Noodle dish too. Staff attentive and knows the menu. Not cheap but classy indeed in all the offerings. ....
We had high expectations - I had heard mixed reviews (good & bad) but still wanted to try long chim for myself. It was fabulous! We had an amazing and friendly waiter (wish I got his name) - he had only been with long chim for a month but knew the menu well and was great on advising the group of us girls on what to order. In fact we left in his hands to order our mains. The food spicy / fresh / colorful and tasty. Some of the dishes were little hot (chilli) but it wasn't bearable. The cocktail list is also great. We finished our entree and mains with a banana based dessert- didn't look like much but when you tasted it - OMG - delicious! I have a sweet tooth and that dessert just finished off our meal nicely. The interior of Restuarant is very cool too, doesn't feel like regular perth restaurant that's for sure. Good work long chim! Look forward to next time to try some other dishes!!!
Had a great night at Long Chim- there were some dishes not quite to my taste (massaman beef) but there were also many standouts including the Tom Yum with snapper, chicken larp, thai sausages and crunchy prawns which made it all worthwhile. Would definitely visit again. Delicious cocktails too!
If you love Thai food and a restaurant with an awesome vibe you need to try Long Chim. Ultra cool street art theme, great service and the food and drink holds nothing back. This may be the most delicious Thai food in Perth. We had the spicy pork with rice crackers and crunchy prawns for starters - spicy flavour and texture bombs! For mains we shared duck red curry and massaman beef with rice and both were amazing - full of flavours, not too sweet and meats cooked perfectly and tender. Cocktails are also a must try - especially the ones with a thai twist - also the bomb. Super fun dinner. We'll be back!
Had dinner at Long Chim tonight with my daughters and family and we were delighted with both food and service. Awesome venue, food fresh and authentic, service was terrific and meals came out so fast. Pad Thai was amazing so was the Banana Roti for dessert. And the paradise found cocktail was refreshing and tasty. Although we took our daughters (9 & 7) and they loved the fried rice, I would say this is a venue for date night if you have kids, not that the kids weren't welcome I would just say that when busy I feel it's more an adult dining vibe. Definitely will be back
Does what it says, great casual street food, nice and spicy, make sure you are chilli fit, service always excellent - have been there 10 time so far
Loved everything we ate here. The larp and som tam are properly, authentically spicy. The massuman deeply rich and glossy. The sour orange fish curry wonderfully both bright and weighty - like a hug from your gregarious plus-sized aunt.
We even got adventurous enough to order both of the Thai white wines, and though I think better value is to be found elsewhere on the list, they were fine. Much better than I would have predicted.
Love the fit-out and the general ambiance.
Just don't love the 90 minutes booking thing - I'm sure not an unusual complaint. In fact, I don't even really mind the concept in itself, and you sure can't say you aren't warned; it was stated clearly at every stage of the booking process, again when I was called the day of the booking to confirm and again when we arrived - not just that we had a 90 minute booking but that there was indeed a booking for our very table at the precise end of those 90 minutes. My dissatisfaction is that after all that drumming into us, we were left alone for 15 minutes, unable to so much as catch the eye of any staff. With the clock ticking we had to make a rather grand gesture to get someone's attention. From then on, service was mostly great. But then after 90 minutes....nothing, there was no later booking. We were never asked to leave or make way for new arrivals, which was nice of course, but it would have been even nicer if we'd been told earlier and could have lingered a little and felt a little less rushed. I get that they're allowing for possible walk-ins or whatever, but by this stage there were quite a few free tables. I think they could have easily told us, say at our half-way mark, that we wouldn't need to give up our table bang on the chime of 90 minutes.
So I guess I'd like to see them finesse the table turnover system a little but I hope they keep cooking such delicious, uncompromised, bold food.
UPDATE: Have been back a few times and enjoyed each visit, including lunch recently. However, it did stick in my craw somewhat that, while spending $150+ on food and wine *just for myself*, I got charged $10 for sparkling water and $6 for a double espresso. That's unseemly chiseling for every last dollar in my view, and subtracts a fair bit of good will I otherwise have for this place.
Was a bit hesitant to come here after reading and hearing bad reviews so not sure whether my expectations were set low but I thought it was nice! The food is very spicy with chillies floating in every dish but once you get used to the initial spice hit then everything is tasty. It caused my nose to run at one point and that never happens when I eat hot food! Hello napkin. Had the red prawn curry - beware it comes with shell, which was delicious. Only 4 prawns per serve but kind of expected that at a fancier place like this. Glass noodles with pork and prawn, Tom yum soup with snapper and the complimentary fish cakes were all tasty. Complimentary rice was a nice touch and essential to soak up the spice. Banana roti was amazing. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff though they could have been a little more attentive to take orders, fill water etc. faster and nice food for a special occasion. On the expensive side but that was expected at a place like this however next time I feel like Thai on a regular night I'll be going back to my old favs. Good to try here at least once (if u can handle the heat!)
Excellent authentic flavours!! In terms of spice it's definitely to the level that you'd expect of traditional Thai. Would highly recommend the banana roti, lamb ribs and pork skewers. Price is a little over the top but the taste of the food makes you forget. Even though our booking noted that we could only stay for 1.5hrs we ended up staying a little longer with no issues - booking on a Tuesday @8pm
Long Chim is superstar Thai chef David Thompson’s latest restaurant and has got people all over Australia talking. For foodies, David Thompson need no introduction but for those who aren’t aware, Sydney born Thompson is known for what is perhaps the best English language Thai cookbook in the world and for his fine dining Thai restaurant Nahm in Bangkok, where Thompson resides
Food : December - We had the opening month 'degustation'. Food was perfect, well balanced, great variety.
Cocktails : for a place that raved about their amazing cocktails and as somewhat of a cocktail aficionado -I thought they were not worth it at all. Pricey and unexciting (despite sounding so epic).
Service : could not be faulted.
Value : well the food was $100 a head and the drinks were approximately $150 a head - I thought it was a little steep.
Just been to Ling Chim after reading a significant amount of negative reviews and a lot of hype here is my verdict - without a booking we arrived at 5pm Saturday greeted and seated without drama - 555 cocktail amazing - cured sausage and larp chicken green papaya salad and chicken green curry was AMAZING - music ambience and venue top class - moaners go to Hans Cafe thankyou very much- David Thompson even strolled through in chef outfit acknowledging his customers - maybe he even created our amazing food - thanks.
I. Love. This. Place. I love this place. From the friendly staff to the cool outdoor courtyard, this place is a breath of fresh air. I felt I was in Melbourne. The decor is super cool and the food so authentic. You can taste every spice and lime leaf you would expect to. We had chicken larb in cabbage leaves, fish cakes, pad thai and massaman curry. Generous serves and extremely delicious. This place does not dissapoint.
Wow! My mouth is still dancing with the flavours it has just had the pleasure of experiencing.
The atmosphere is cool, hip date I say swanky.... The food is quick to your table and is more than enough.
Excellent value for money will definitely be back
The curries had a wonderful composition, and obviously made from scratch, but I think the chef went a bit overboard with the chillies, making the meal extremely difficult to enjoy. Besides this, the overall flavouring and balance was great.
Sitting here in the restaurant after had three courses with lots of food for 2 people. In fact, this is my second time but for my friend it is her first time and she was so excited before coming here after all the ravings from people around her. We ordered 2 entrees, 3 main and 1 dessert plus 2 fantastic cocktails. Every single dish was amazing especially the red curry of roast duck and grilled lamb ribs. They are truly the best red duck curry and grilled lamb for me. Two of the secrets behind many dishes here are that they squeeze coconut themselves every morning and make their own curry pates.
Service is impeccable, very friendly, attentive and serve us with big smile. I will definitely recommend my friends to come and I will make sure they don't mind taking me with them again and again!!
This is simply stunning food. I've eaten David Thompson's food before - in Bangkok and Singapore - and the food here in Perth is every bit as good. Superb curries, excellent service and really lovely cocktails. And I love the blow-your-head off larb!
Fantastic service and the food was amazing. Really authentic Thai food that was worth every cent. Not one for deserts but had the palm sugar & coconut, was to die for. Will be back!
The Life Of A Designer
+4.5
Located at the basement of the grandeur State Building in the Cathedral Square precinct, Long Chim Perth takes us from an elegant Victorian style building to a bustling Bangkok street. The concept of the design is to bring back the Bangkok streetscape to town, with core elements of graffiti, steels dividers and rustic accessories added to it. From there, it imports all furniture, accessories and even the glassware straight from Thailand.
The long awaited Long Chim - at last! If anyone knows what authentic Thai food is, it's David Thompson. And this really delivered. We were welcomed by very friendly and helpful staff. Even though seating is at long tables, we had plenty of privacy. We ordered three entrées and three mains to share between four of us. Unfortunately the entrées and mains all came out together, which would have caused a lot of congestion on the table, so we sent the mains back. They argued that this is how they do it, just bringing everything out when it's ready. This is the style in Asia but we preferred to savour our entrées first. It didn't spoil our enjoyment of the food. It was superb. Easily the best Thai food I've had in a Perth restaurant, or anywhere else come to that, with the possible exception of Chiang Mai. Entrées: Crunchy Prawn Cakes, Cured Pork Sausage and Chiang Mai Larp of Chicken; Mains: Massaman Curry of Beef, Red Curry of Roast Duck and Deep Fried (whole) Fish with Three Flavoured Sauce. All Brilliant, though some of our little group found the larp too hot (chili-wise). I finished off with a Thai Coffee Ice Cream, which was delicious. This is an expensive restaurant but it delivers very high quality food in pleasant surroundings with great ambiance. We will be back.
As you walk into the building, you know for sure that you won't be disappointed. A lot of effort has been made with the decor, crockery and general look and feel of the place.
The food was great, but next time we would have less dishes. The crunchy prawn salad was sensational. My husband went crazy for the cocktails and he isn't normally a cocktail guy.
The service was fantastic, didn't put a foot wrong. Price was pretty up there for 'casual' dining.
Great flavours in a dining room filled with great scents of chillies and spices. Definitely not a place for date night, we were showed to our table that was wedged between two tables of four so asked for a diff table with some privacy, eventually got seated in front of the kitchen which was better as we could hear the mortar and pestle pounding out the chills and spices.
Recently went to this busy Restaurant on a Saturday night.
THE GOOD
Easy online booking, friendly attentive staff throughout. The flavours were generally very good, without the need to drown it in coconut milk/cream. Portion sizes OK across the menu, with plenty of rice for all the dishes,
THE BAD
The Orange Curry Fish & Red Curry Roast Duck were swimming in sauce with very little fish or duck pieces. Pity, as the flavours were fine. Good thing we had plenty of rice to mop up!
This place is in its early days and there is need for improvement, so we will give another go soon.
BACK AGAIN
This time for a Sunday lunch. Online booking 3 days prior. The ambiance, and the friendly and attentive service, was very good. There was a different menu selection from last time, but with many of the "old favourites" still available. Because of our previous experience, we opted for mostly dishes without a curry sauce. The Dtom Yam of Snapper was very good, & very spicy as expected. The Pad Thai sadly had been burnt, something that shouldn't happen in a Thai staple restaurant dish. Other dishes were OK, but not "to die for". Desserts are certainly worth a try. I'll give it awhile before trying again
Had a great night at Long Chims. Fresh and authentic food!
Will be back for sure, especially when they expand the menu in February!!
The chilli hit was what we wanted, perfectly balanced with the other flavours
Michelin Starred David Thomson – whose Bangkok restaurant Nahm has featured in the world’s top 50 list – marked his long awaited return to Australia with the opening of street food inspired Long Chim in Perth in December 2015. Perth? Yes, perhaps he is trying to help them get over the death of the mining boom, though plans for a Sydney arm are apparently underway (hopefully this is what he was working on that night, as he was frequently checking his laptop in between walking around the restaurant and the kitchen).
Really wonderful! Fantastic service and delicious food. Between two big eaters we had 2 starters and 2 shared mains and we were full.
Will come back to try more dishes soon.
Long Chim is yet another great addition to the Perth dining scene.
Not only is this fabulous new restaurant and its gorgeous courtyard a great funky space in the basement of the new treasury building precinct but the food is devine.
We had some fresh cocktails and ate the duck fried rice and the duck curry, both delicious and bursting with flavour.
This place is a fusion of Chinese, Malaysian and Thai food all rolled into one restaurant.
Will be back to sample other items soon.
Everything I had was nice but it still averaged to about a 7/10 and can be quite pricey. The sausages very nice and the durian ice cream worth eating . I liked the green and red curries but they were both only okay. I do prefer the red duck curry at Nu Nahm and Southern Star (Langlely Park). Those last two are very creamy and rich with lychees and a different style to Long Chim. The green curry could be better. The papaya salad was a little watery but nice. Seemed a little western friendly to me. Banana Roti was good too.
By all means give it a try but it looks like I need to go to Thailand sometime for the real deal. Or possibly Long Chim in Singapore.
We came here for dinner one Sunday evening and the food was amazing! We had an hour and 45 minute slot but it was plenty of time to enjoy the food. The food came out quickly and the staff were friendly and efficient, never leaving your water glass empty. All the flavours were spot on, my only criticism would be the lack of meat in the curry dishes
One of the best special fried rice I've ever had (with crab meat) and the banana roti dessert was simply amazing
Cannot wait to come back again!
Thai for Sunday lunch. Papaya salad and fish cake to start. The salad was fresh and the fish cakes had a good hit of spice. For main we had green curry which was tasty but not much protein for the money. We also had duck fried rice which again was tasty but lacked value for money with a few pieces of duck. Desert were good but works out at $3 per bite. While I would eat again i think the price point would put me off a regular visits instead going to Low Key Chow house.
We had dinner in the bar area on a Friday night. The ambience is cool, it's not loud so you can actually have a normal conversation, the courtyard is pretty funky to look at and the best part, you don't have a seating time limit (otherwise you get 1.5hours if you were to go at 6pm in the restaurant which can feel pretty rushed so i was not keen).
The service was mostly good, sometimes with the crowds it was hard to wave down a waitress but that's understandable while they get used to working with the set up.
The food was pretty tasty definitely but for those prices, it's not worth it. $30 a dish gets you a few pieces of fish in the sour orange fish curry and a few pieces of duck and lots of rice in the fried rice with duck. The baked prawns and glass noodles was more reasonable. The banana roti was great though.
Highly recommended. Great food, with a bit of kick. The tastes and smells in this place are amazing. If you like Thai food, make sure you get here.
We cheekily rang on a Thursday to see if we could score a table for the Saturday night (as I was told you had to book months in advance) and of course they were booked out except for a 9.30pm table which is a bit late for us. I had also sent them an email and the response was the same but offered the advice if we came in between 5-7 we should be able to get a table in the bar or the courtyard. So my hubby and I arrived around 6pm and scored a table in the courtyard. Simple setting but it was refreshing to be outside eating for a change and the walls keep it safe from the winds on St Georges Terrace. We ordered everything to share:Entrée- prawn minced in lettuce cups (not the official name!) and fish cakes. Both were delicious with a lot of bite and seeing I am only good with mild I requested a side plate of cucumber so I could keep eating it. Side sauce for the fish cakes would have benefited the dish.Main - duck red curry, lamb rib special and pad thai. We asked the waitress for recommendations and she explained the special to us and their unique pad thai so we went with that and weren't disappointed. The meat on the ribs melted in your mouth off the bone and the pad thai was very tasty. We enjoyed the duck but too many bones for my liking. And it doesn't compare to the duck red curry at Ginger Boy in Melbourne. For the mains we were given a selection of sauces to choose from if we so desired. We ate most of it but left some of the pad thai as a good size helping. Cocktails were well made and yummy. Hubby nominated Long Chim the best Thai restaurant in Perth. I wouldn't disagree.
It is early days at Long Chim Perth, with the shorter opening menu about to expand to match the size of the Long Chim in Singapore. Even still, Long Chim already impressed us, and has jumped to the front of the pack as the best Thai restaurant in Perth. For those expecting Nahm in Perth, Long Chim is decidedly more casual than Nahm or many of the more high end Thai restaurants in town, but the kitchen is commendably putting out food to the same exacting standard we experienced at Thompson's flagship restaurant in Bangkok (albeit at a less fine dining level). It is that authenticity and perfectionism that made the Red Curry, Deep Fried Fish with Three Flavoured Sauce and Banana Roti benchmark-setting dishes. The smaller serves might put some people off, but I see this as an opportunity to try more dishes as a result, with the prices being very competitive and affordable. With excellent, friendly service to sweeten the deal, we were all thoroughly impressed and are already making plans to make a return visit. Nahm is still the best Thai meal Alissa and I have had the pleasure of eating, but we are incredibly lucky to have Long Chim in our home town as the next best thing. I cannot recommend this restaurant more highly.
Hot, our, sweet and seasoned to the hilt, Long Chim’s food is Thai food at its most arresting, balanced and elegant best. In short, get any of the starters (the larb or the beef skewers are top notch), you can't go wrong. At least one curry and if you're hungry, a noodle dish. But don't, whatever you do, miss the desserts. The banana roti, the palm sugar pudding or for those who love funk, the durian ice cream are superb.
Loved it! Beautiful flavours, well removed from the typical western influenced Thai. Great setting, great food, great service and delicious cocktails. Also a shout out to Chris our waiter who was superb. Thanks for a great night LC.
Tuesday 22nd December
I was so excited to eat here maybe too excited which is why it didn't gets 5. The ambience and decor is great.
We had red duck curry, pad Thai (delicious but very saucy), spicy pork and the fish cakes. The watermelon mocktail and a 555 cocktail!
The fantastic - the food was all great my favourite was the spicy pork entree it was such a good blend of flavours but it was hot!!!! The fish cakes were just average everything else was perfection. The open kitchen is cool and the drinks list is interesting with some cool cocktails.
The ok - the service needs honing we had to wave people down for water and the bill . I think that's just a new team thing as they all seemed to be trying. There is also an awful lot of ice in the drinks.
I can't wait to go again and try more dishes. It's a fantastic new place for Perth. So what if the menu isn't on their website go in and experience the food like you did before smartphones took over the world!!
Hot and sour is a set of contrasting flavours that speak to elegant balance requiring excellent execution. Hot and cold refers to contradicting aspects that provide both the highs and lows in the same breath. A perfectionist would shake at the thought of opening a big ticket restaurant, in a new big ticket hotel, in a city that can break even the most successful magnate. In this case the magnate is of the culinary variety. David Thompson is surely the most well-known Australian chef that has made Thai his own. He has a long history, and has been overseas for a long time, but I am interested in the present.
I've been 3 times now. Had most of the starters and about 1/2 of the mains. The food is spectacularly good. I've read some of the other less than positive reviews and I'm sorry but I just don't think they get this quality of Thai food. The green papaya salad was rustic (by the traditional Thai hand method not a mandolin and was very earthy and fresh. The dried King fish was magnificent crisp moist and full of flavour. Pad Thai full of tamarind flavour, an incredible massaman curry.
The only thing that didn't turn my crank was the pork sausage which was interesting but not great. The chicken larp fabulous but conversation stopping hot.
I could go on but you get the idea. I fail to understand any of the negative comments but admit long standing Thompson admiration as I've eaten at his Darley St and Sailors Thai in Sydney and Nahm in London. Long Chim serves up wonderfully put together earthy and zingy Thai with a real Thai street soul.
I'm happy if the detractors don't come back and leave more bookings free for me.
We went to Long Chim to have a cocktail at the bar and ended up having three. All were very delicious and the bartender was very friendly. We will be returning to try the food, as we were told great things
Was very excited to dine here as we love Thai food. I had the phad Thai and my partner has the roast duck. Both dishes were delicious, my phad Thai was the most flavoursome dish I've had in my life, it was amazing! We then shared a banana Roti which was delicious! Very happy with the food, will be back one day!
Real Thai. Smoking hot. Watch you don't fill up on cabbage leaves. I've eaten at Nahm in Bangkok a couple of times and this is a welcome addition much closer to home. The prawn/betel leaf parcels were favourites.
A superb meal, much anticipated, complete and memorable. The room, in three parts is subterranean edgy and cute. A open courtyard with a luminous mural of 'farting' child in a fur onesie, a anteroom of sorts, and then to the left a larger cavern, the back of which is lined with produce and crockery. Head turning and very much in tune.
A single page menu, seven starters and and two dozen or so larger plates. We tried all of the starters - each wonderful - punchy and bold, some with crunch, all more than worthy. If I had to pick a pair it would be the crunchy prawn cakes ($18, picture 2) and the stumpy cured pork sausage ($20, picture 6), closely followed by the dried prawns wrapped in betel leaf ($15 - a partially finished dish shown in picture 4).
The larger plates too are enticing and thirst inducing. We had a pair of smoky noodles (charred - picture 8, and the rice noodles with beef), a sticky deep fried fish (picture 7) and an excellent green chicken curry (terrific depth of flavours, picture 10). The minced pork and prawn soup was pleasingly mild and soothing to the tongue ($26, picture #9).
The deserts are a sweet counterpoint. The banana roti ($13, a definite share dish, the last food picture) is recommended and lovers of durian should try the rich and stinky ice cream.
The wine list is well considered - heavy with aromatic whites - riesling, and pinot noir. They even have a Thai chenin blanc. . .
Fanstastic! I'm a big fan of David Thompson, and he doesn't disappoint here. To those who complain about the prices - what do you expect at a CBD restaurant with full bar service, spanking new fitout and food to match?!
We had the chiang mai larp (hot! but delicious, and no hotter than a plate full of kung pow chicken at Szechwan Zen restaurant), crispy prawn cakes, sour orange fish curry and beef salad. 1 Banana roti for dessert, and a few cocktails and watermelon juice. All just stunning. The dishes aren't big, but we had eaten ample between the 2 of us. We're back for office xmas lunch next week, woohoo!
We were excited to try this new addition to State Buildings, just opened on 1st of December. Going inside, they have few sections: outside, bar (middle) and inside. Each got colourful murals (wall arts) & graffitis painted, very creative.
What we had:
~ Papaya Salad: Refreshing but missing something (???)
~ Spicy Larb of Chicken: This dish had some serious chilli kick! I cant stand it, but some people might struggle to eat it.
~ Pad Thai: Our favourite dish of the night. Not sure what noodle they used but it's different compared to those Pad Thais we've had so far. It's chewy and sauced well, very yummy.
- Sour Orange Curry with Fish: Thought we tried something different than just usual red or green curry. It's a unique curry dish and fish cooked to perfection. You can taste and smell the orange but not too overpowering.
~ Thai Basil Seeds (Mocktail): This drink was a big let down. You cant really taste anything else but sourness from lime.
~ Durian & Thai Coffee Ice Cream: Both ice creams were really good and got strong flavour. We think that they used good quality durian to make. I prefer the Thai Coffee but others liked Durian better.
Long Chim might sell street food you can buy cheaply in Thailand, but their price surely wasn't cheap. Be prepared to pay between $40-$50 per head. Last but not least, I would like to commend the floor staffs because they were all so friendly and gave us exceptional service. I wish you all the best Long Chim Perth.
