Review Marumo - Perth

Service was impeccable. I'm afraid I don't know enough words to describe the food adequately. Best to try them yourself. It's 3 hours for each seating.. so make sure you choose good company before booking your spot.

So enjoyable when you get lucky with a booking. The duck and beef dishes were delicious and sushi/sashimi were fresh, warm and tasty as always. The dessert was delicate and delectable with just the natural ingredient and flavour shining through.

Had a very enjoyable dinner there, a good degustation menu with a good selection of seafood and meat, very fresh sashimi, and very tender beef and duck, love the mushroom sauce with the duck, definitely great quality food and delicious 😋. However, check the booking and cancellation policy and make sure you confirm and confirm your booking if you get one, not easy to get a booking.

The best meal ~$80 will get you in Perth. Provided you can get a table… Service is incredible too!

Enjoyed all the food. Straight forward good dish overall. With the price and whats been presented I'm fully satisfied and understand the hype around the booking etc. Worth to try if you haven't. Will definitely come back for more if i get lucky with the booking

A dining experience worth waiting for. After waiting almost 3 years to successfully book a spot for dinner, my wife & I can vouch for the wonderful degustation experience that Chef Moe and his team do at Marumo. From the moment we stepped in, to the time we exit 3 hrs later, we were made to feel welcome. The service was not rushed so allocate at least 2.5-3hrs for the dining. The menu is seasonal and Chef Moe’s winter menu was a winner for us at $80 pp. The restaurant is very intimate and only offer around 20 pp capacity & they were very accommodating to our request to bring our newborn along in a pram so that we can breastfeed our baby between course. The restaurant is BYO, and you will definitely enjoy the 3 hrs dining experience as time does fly when you are with the one you love. All the courses were tastefully curated and delicious, and the only complaint my wife had was that she would have loved more serving of their sashimi and seared Wagyu beef. :) We will be counting down to the next booking opening for their Spring menu. Tips 1: booking is very difficult as the other reviews have already indicated. You just have to keep trying and refreshing your browser when the booking opens on the dot. Tips 2: as it’s only a single seating of up to 3 hrs a night, try to book the earliest 7pm before the other diners arrived at their later booking times if you like to enjoy a bit of quiet time initially.

Fresh tasty food, great value for money and friendly staff. Always look forward to our reservation here, my favourite is the sashimi course. It is Byo too!

Enjoyed an amazing dinner where with 3 friends. I have been trying to get seats in here for ages and my good friend finally managed to get one. Fremantle Octopus and Cucumber. The Octopus was tender and very delicious. Toothfish & Zucchini. My friend loves Patagonian Toothfish, I found it creamy and tender with a sweet flavour. Very nice! The dish needs some thought as eating it with chopsticks was quite difficult, maybe some smaller portions? Smoked Duck and Melon Delicious and it all vanished so fast. Sashimi, OMG we were warned about the freshly ground wasabi but it still just blew me away. They all were fresh and enjoyable. Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi. Four pieces? Jusg wasn’t enough. Ha ha Margaret River Yearling Beef, tender cut of beef performed. It was tender and tasted great. Dessert was “Green Tea, Blueberry and Citrus” Green Tea parfait with a blueberry sauce. Yum.

Faultless. Well worth the wait to get a seat here. There were no bad dishes and one of the most pleasant dining experiences you’ll have. Thanks

Actual rating: 4.5/5<br/>Overjoyed to receive an email noting that there had been a cancellation and I was IN! I had screwed up the booking app (being a first-time user) and had to resort to waitlisting for every possible date. But my efforts had paid off and here was a chance, at last, to sample the legendary Marumo by Moe Oo...<br/><br/>I cannot fault the cooking and attention to detail. Courses were well-timed, each individual dish made sense by itself and within the omakase progression. Starting with the appetizer of ameabi & buri we moved to a sublime dish of duck, mushroom and miso egg yolk which was a silky, thick flavour bomb. <br/><br/>Next came a beautifully textured tofu dish with rice puff balls, an excellent plate of superb quality sashimi, innovative sushi (once again, playing mostly with the textures to enhance the experience), and an exquisitely tender beef dish that paid homage to the original steak & onion but was much, much tastier. The only slightly disappointing dish was the dessert of shio koji, popcorn and chestnut which looked beautiful but tasted mostly like sweet breakfast cereal. I think something slightly more thoughtful could have been used to round out what was otherwise a perfect succession of dishes. <br/><br/>Definitely will come back. For $70 it is certainly great value and I can confirm that the hype is (mostly) justified - one of the top meals in Perth - provided you can be bothered to fight for a table!!
Mrs Foodie
Fantastic service. Staff had excellent attention to detail from working out if I was drinking wine to putting the wine we brought on ice. <br/><br/>Menu was placed on the table and each meal was described to each person when served. Again attention to detail to each plate and cutlery was provided for different courses. Hidden Gem of Perth. Omg <br/><br/>Thank you for making my birthday very memorable. And we will be back for more.

This restaurant is tops. Lovely, unobtrusive service, beautifully prepared food, and really really reasonably priced. Fortunate to have eaten there twice now and look forward to returning.

Marumo is one of Perth’s best degustation restaurants, and its price tag of $70 per person makes eating there even more of a coveted experience. Securing a booking there has become a monumentally difficult task, as bookings are only released every few months and tend to be booked out within the first minute or so of being released.

After years of waiting to get a table here finally got to experience Marumo. It was worth the wait loved all the 7 courses. Can’t wait to be back here.

This place is amazing. Byo and food is of such a high quality I felt like I was a judge on Masterchef. I’m not a massive desert person but the desert which was beetroot focused was just amazing one if not the best desert I have ever had. I highly and I mean highly suggest this place for an amazing experience. Need to book well in advance.

Outstanding meal. Everything was so well balanced, with dishes which shone with the simplicity which brought out the best of the natural ingredients. The highlights were the duck, which melted in the mouth, the Tasmanian salmon belly sashimi which was delightfully fatty, the soba which I would have gladly eaten a whole bowl full of, and the sushi in which the variety of tastes were balanced in every mouthful.... And it's not fair to have a highlight if everything was a highlight. The entire evening was a culinary delight. Very greatful to have managed to secure a booking ( second attempt!) And hope to attend again in the future.

Absolutely fabulous food never had such an amazing experience with food like this place..... my number one Japanese place so far.....the only down side is that I couldn’t give them 10 Star ..... oh here it is ***** 5 more....<br/>

First time at Marumo and everything was absolutely delicious.. the 7 courses along with the sneaky squid salad appetiser and sorbet palet cleanser. Each course was just mouth watering and I do not have one complaint. Walked out completely satisfied and cannot wait to go there again. Amazing food, amazing service and great value. New favourite Perth restaurant without a doubt!

Top class food and taste. Absolutely beautifully craved food and presentations. The chef’s art in food is superbly well thought and cook.<br/><br/>Well worth for the wait for booking. Thank you for hosting my family!!!

Amazing food and ambience - definitely worth a try! The highlights of the meal were the beef tenderloin (it was as tender as tofu) and the salmon belly sushi.

Beautiful, delicious fine-dining quality food in a cosy venue. My partner have been here twice now and out of 22 combined dishes we haven't been able to fault a single thing. Exceptional food, fantastic service and a great experience all round. Vicki Harris

Always top class food that changes regularly. Getting much harder to get into as it gains popularity.<br/><br/>If you like Japanese it's a must go and especially for the price and BYO convenience.

One of the best restaurants I have ever had the pleasure to dine in. The highlights for me were the Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi, the Miso, Yuzu & Grapefruit ice cream dessert and the crispy Burdock, Zucchini & Corn. Fabulous food. Attentive service. Cosy premises, max 30. One of the tables were tipsy and very noisy. Four Omakase menus a year. Bookings are open seasonally (quarterly). When bookings open online, you have about 15 minutes before every table for every night is booked up for the season. Some people have better luck with a mobile (than a PC). We had the Winter menu which was:- Squid pre-appetizer- Smoked New Zealand Mussel- Shark Bay Honey Bug soup- Burdock, Zucchini & Corn- Sashimi - Scallop, Hamachi & Salmon- Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi- Yuzu & Orange sorbet- Duck, Carrot & Quinoa- Miso, Yuzu & Grapefruit ice cream. So sheok!

We have travelled to Japan for holidays several times and lived in Asia previously, but this restaurant far surpasses many that we have tried. Top quality fresh ingredients creatively assembled and plated made a fantastic dining experience.. already looking forward to the next time I have the opportunity to secure a booking here!

Absolutely amazing! Enjoyed all 7 courses especially the salmon belly sushi (delicious!!). A great dining experience, will definitely be back if I'm fortunate to get a booking!
Ilovebeansprouts
Absolutely love it and cannot wait to go back again. Been here a while ago and tried the Omakase Menu. Food is prepared with the freshest ingredients and with lots of care. It's obvious through the way food is presented on the plate and in good sequence. We were even served with a refreshing sorbet as a palate cleanser before the pork fillet came out. Well-balanced flavours in every dish. Our menu of the night:<br/><br/>~Yellow Fin Pacific Tuna & Yamaimo<br/>~Margaret River Beef Tataki<br/>~Soft Shell Crab & Enoki<br/>~Chef's Selection of Sashimi<br/>~Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi<br/>~Linley Valley Pork Fillet<br/>~Miso Caramel Parfait, Pear & Popcorn<br/><br/>Nice ambience, top-notch food and great value for money. Cannot fault it at all.

This is so worthwhile, if you are able to get a booking, great stuff you're in luck. Bookings open in 3 months slots and fully booked out in 20 minutes, it hot stuff right now. Its a set seasonal menu and consists of around 7 dishes for $65. True value for money and afterwards you definitely feel 'oh wow I had all of that for only that much". <br/>The beef with corn trufle, Sashimi and sushi were truly devine . It genuinely makes it one of the best Japanese restaurants in Perth.<br/>Its a 3 hour setting, so bring your wine and make sure you have good company.
Asian Fusion
So good! Do yourself a favour, check Marumo's website for the next booking opening date and set a reminder to book a table, its worth it. Perfect amount of food, subtle service, and amazing value! $65 for 7 courses and it's BYO? Unheard of!
Little Aussie Epicurean
Not to be missed!!! You have to be determined to get a spot with limited nights and single seating, with reservations opening in 3 month blocks at a time. I've been twice for two different seasonal menus and haven't been disappointed by any dish. In fact the chef has completely changed how I feel about some ingredients. Such as the cold edamame soup. So creamy, so naturally sweet. The sushi roll was perfectly balanced and given that you are encourage to eat each generous piece in a single bite, a little fun too.
Kate
Absolutely incredible, every course was full of flavour, a great combination of different textures and downright delicious. The service is impeccable, the staff are attentive, informative and friendly. I can't pick a favourite dish as they were all so delicious. Definitely recommend going here, if you can get a table!

Came here on a Saturday night a couple of weeks ago. The most creatively presented Japanese food in Perth. Located in a simple, unassuming venue in Nedlands, Marumo is one of Perth's best kept secrets (and good luck trying to get a booking - it's more of who you know). The seven to eight courses take a marathon 3 hours to get through but your palate will be excited at every course.

Really amazing Japanese food. Highlights on the night we dined here were the Noritake Chicken, salmon belly sushi and the chilled edemame lobster and tobiko soup. Highly recommended. Only gripes are it's very small. Small enough to hear everyone else's conversations. I hope Stuart overcomes his self consciousness in the bedroom love. The duck course on the night wasn't great. Tough, lukewarm and not a trace of Japanese flavour. The omakase menu means that the process takes a fair amount of time. Get a table if you can.

Marumo is a tiny, intimate little restaurant discreetly tucked away in a professional centre amongst the dentists and lawyers offices. <br/>It has a stellar reputation and usually books out for months within a day of opening bookings each season. However, their reputation is well-earned and it is more than worth the wait. With an exclusively omakase, or "chef's choice", set menu, Marumo creates an amazing 7- course modern japanese meal - the summer menu included a sashimi course with fresh grated wasabi, braised duck wrapped in crispy fried bean curd and a line of 3 incredible little sushi rolls containing deep-fried prawn and topped with 'blowtorched' tuna slices.<br/>The standout for us was a mind-blowing chilled edamame soup. It was thick and creamy and contained beatifully steamed chopped lobster meat and a sprinkling of tobiko. The flavours supported each other beautifully and I can honestly say I've never had anything like it.<br/><br/>Whilst the restaurant will do what they can to accommodate dietary requirements, they're understandably restricted due to their menu style. If you're not a lover of seafood Marumo may not be your thing, as most courses contained it.<br/>The ambience was lovely and intimate, the waitstaff friendly, helpful and genuinely happy to be there.<br/><br/>At the insanely low price of $65/person, this was one of the best dining experiences I've had anywhere in Australia. I'm excited for when bookings for next season open and I will be ready to pounce on one!

DE. LI. CIOUS.<br/><br/>Food was amazeballs (definitely could have eaten more) and the service was really efficient.<br/><br/>With only a 28 seating capacity and constantly being booked out at least 3 months in advance, you know they're doing something right.<br/><br/>Was lucky enough to try out the Omakase Menu (their spring menu) and I must say, the only criticism of the food I had was that there wasn't enough of it. There was no one dish that was a let down and all of them were delicious on their own.<br/><br/>Would definitely recommend (if you manage to get a booking)!<br/><br/>Onakase Menu |<br/>• river prawn karaage<br/>• panko egg and enoki mushroom<br/>• northwest barramundi and sweet miso<br/>• sashimi<br/>• Tasmanian salmon belly sushi<br/>• beef tenderloin with carrot and corn purée<br/>• genmaicha and strawberry

If you manage to secure a booking at this tiny, non-assuming Japanese restaurant (a challenge in itself), be prepared for a wonderful culinary experience. Upon arrival we were politely greeted and were allowed to choose our preferred table. The restaurant itself is very casual and holds no more than 30 diners. The menu is set - 7 courses, (not including a complimentary appetiser and sorbet), but be warned - there is no drinks menu, so other than the included water and green tea, it's strictly BYO. Courses came out at a steady pace over the space of 3 hours, with highlights being the miso barramundi, the tempura prawn and torched salmon belly sushi (divine) and the melt in your mouth sashimi. Does Marumo re-invent the wheel with their degustation dishes? Not quite, but the dishes were most importantly fresh, full of flavour, well presented and had your taste buds doing a happy dance. At $65 a head, I couldn't quite comprehend how or why their pricing was so low considering that most degustations in Perth are close to double this, but no complaints here! The only thing lacking from the night was a bit of atmosphere and ambience, but if I can manage to secure another booking I will definitely be back here soon.

What a complete nonsense - the booking process that is! The wife, along with all her work colleagues have been trying to secure a booking for, well at least months, if not a year. Finally we get a shot, not because we were successful but because friends were....twice, for consecutive nights.<br/><br/>Nice little restaurant for about 25 or so guests, unfortunately we were seated near the door, thankfully it only opened a few times as the draft was bloody freezing.<br/><br/>The service was good, no, I lie, it was great, very attentive. The meal, well my mate reckons it was some of the best food he's ever put in his mouth. I didn't think it was that great but definitely a beautifully prepared, presented and flavoursome meal that is hard to fault. I was a little (read - a lot) worried that there wouldn't be enough & we'd have to stop for a burger on the way home but despite the portion sizes overall it was enough to satisfy.<br/><br/>Will we be back? Probably, but due to the booking process it might not be until 2018 (if we're lucky).

My lady and I first went to Marumo when they were working out of the little cafe/deli shop in Leeming. It had then, and still retains, the infamous cult following that they have so earned. Foods spot on and the ambiance at the new digs retains.
PerthfectBreakfast
We waited for this day for two months after we booked. My body was ready to devour all 7 courses. Marumo is a little 25 seater restaurant offering a 7 course omakase for $65 incl green tea. Service was polite, attentive and my water and tea glasses were always kept topped up. Everyone is pretty much served each course at the same time and the dining room goes from a buzz of laughter and chatter to dead silence when the food arrives cuz we're all busy stuffing our gobs. Haha <br/><br/>Each course was a delight but for me, the stand out was the dessert course. White chocolate and geinmatcha mousse with apple jelly, finely diced apple and green tea and roasted rice garnish. I scanned the restaurant to see if anyone didn't eat theirs cuz I swear to god, it was soooo good I would've finished off a stranger's dessert haha. I wanted seconds. And thirds. It was a light and refreshing end to a seven course meal.<br/><br/>My other favourites were the eggplant and cuttlefish. That bit of tempura eggplant with sweet sticky icky miso glaze was so moorish. Wanted a whole bowl of it. The aburi salmon belly roll with tempura prawn and tobiko was definitely some of the best sushi I've had. <br/><br/>All the dishes were beautifully presented and it was a memorable meal. Hanging out for the next release date so I can book in again!

The best dinning experience of my life. After dinner you leave and talk about nothing else all night. Chef Moe is the master. When a restaurant holds 30 seats and is booked out for 6 months in advance you think why not get a bigger place. Then you eat at Marumo and understand. Presentation of the food is as amazing as it tastes.
Gretchen
The inside of the sushi was fried salmon. The salmon skin was crunchy which added to the texture. 7 courses plus 2 (a squid and sherbet). The duck was tasty.
The Chefs Wife
We are a couple of giddy kippers as we arrive at Marumo. I’ve been looking forward to my meal at this buzzed about Japanese for months. I’m curious to find out if the hype surrounding Marumo stems from the difficulty of securing a booking or the quality of the food.
B-Mama
Perfect plating and really delicious food. Service was impeccable -- our cups were never dry! Most of the food was done perfectly but the genmaicha dessert for me, was what really shone. So creative and so beautifully executed. There's a long waitlist to get in so plan ahead.
Perth Foodaholic
Marumo is a small intimate Japanese restaurant in Perth that is the ‘talk of the town’. It is constantly booked out 3 months in advance via online reservations and if you’re lucky enough to get a booking you will understand why. Everyone that I know that has been here, has loved it. I have not heard a single bad thing about it which is an amazing achievement in itself. The restaurant can sit a maximum of 30 people and they only have one seating per night. The focus of this place is not getting as many people in and out of the door as possible. It really is about enjoying high quality food, and simple food executed to perfection. The chef offers a 7 course Omakase menu for only $60 per person (absolutely bargain!). It is also BYO.
Richard
Fantastic food! So fresh, unique, great flavour combinations with interesting ingredients, nice presentation and excellent service. Will definitely come again
IMasticate
Marumo has something of a cult following in Perth. This Japanese restaurant books out 3 months in advance via online reservations and a long waiting list. If luck favours you, then you will join a handful of other delighted customers for a 7 course omakase (chef’s choice) set menu dinner for $60...<br/><br/>Likes: super fresh sashimi, salmon belly sushi, chicken with egg tofu, BYO<br/><br/>Value for money: still a bargain in my book!
No_self_control
Sensational! Japanese food at its best in Perth. Very high quality food at an unbelievable price ($60 for 7 courses), each of the courses were amazing and I would happily eat again. My faves of the night were the edamame soup with lobster, beef mushroom & chestnut soup and the salmon belly & prawn sushi. Yum. And with byo what more could you want??
Hungryhenry
Lovely dinner. 7 courses over three hours. First came the chilled edamame soup with lobster which I could eat over and over. The snapper followed and melted in your mouth. The duck panko was a little dry to my liking. Sashimi and sushi fresh. The beef again melted and the sauce was made it better. The desert was green tea mousse with white chocolate, although not completely set the flavour made up for it. I will here again.
Aaron Chew
This place really is incredible value for money! A 7-course omakase menu that includes lots of sashimi and some lobster that leaves you very full. Very honest food from Chef Moe and his team.
Take Me To Foodie Heaven
Two months before – frantic clicking and refreshing of the booking form at 10am on the booking release day. Two months later, we are finally at Marumo!. Marumo is a popular fine dining institution among Perth locals with a specialty in omakase style Japanese cuisine, priced at $60 per person (including green tea). It’s fully booked every night and you definitely have to book ahead to secure a table. Marumo has always been on my wishlist and I’m so happy that we managed to score a booking at Marumo.
FoodieKitten
Well executed foods with great taste, texture and plating. Most importantly at a very reasonable price of $60pp. Indeed a satisfying 7-course omakase! Definitely will try to return as often if only we can get us a spot. Well done to Chef Moe and wife together with their friendly staffs. Keep up the good work!
Klmyay
Delicious and filling, while everyone else had the set menu they did a special vegetarian version for me and it was divine. Great service too! I can see why this place books out quickly.
More Than Nourishment
This was our third trip to Marumo but the first to the new location at Nedlands since they moved from Leeming. The atmosphere and quality of the food has definitely improved which is a big call for the food as it was pretty damn good before at the old store. Every dish was beautifully presented and delish! They were also able to cater for my dislike of sashimi and gave me pork gyozas instead. My favorite dish was the dessert, strawberry mousse with a green tea filling and white chocolate crumble. It wouldn't be something I would usually order but because it came with the set menu, I had no choice. I was surprised how good it was as I normally don't like mousse. The only downside is that it came out slightly slow so you should expect to be there for the entire 3 hours (7-10pm) and it is really noisy as the restaurant is small and packed. Will definitely try to come back.. If we manage to get a booking!
SameSameButDifferent
The hype was all true!!!<br/><br/>It is an amazing experience. So glad I had the opportunity to eat there! :) the food was so delicate and so divine! And fantastic value for money!<br/><br/>Photos are heavily edited to brighten them up cos the lighting was low for atmosphere.
Cherikstony
Best Japanese fusion restaurant in town! Though it took us three months, but we finally managed to grab a table for five a few weeks before study break, which is absolutely delightful. <br/><br/>Our menu today consisted of the following:<br/>Albacore tuna, avocado and mentaiko<br/>beef tenderloin with ponzu<br/>Duck and corn<br/>Chef's selection of sashimi (hamasaki kingfish, Tasmanian salmon and Hokkaiddo Scallops)<br/>Tasmanian salmon belly sushi<br/>miso Barramundi and parsnip<br/>strawberry, yuzu and green tea.<br/><br/>Of all the dishes, the sushi was the best! I am not kidding, they have the best sushi in Perth. The salmon belly was slightly seared, and the sushi roll was filled with freshly cooked tiger prawn tempura. The prawn tempura's coating was still crunchy when you bite into it! The mayo on top was also slightly seared, giving it an extra smoky flavour; it was just divine!<br/><br/>But honestly though, everything was gorgeous, the flavours all well balanced and ingredients so fresh. You can certainly taste that the chef has put a lot of effort into these dishes.
Christina Tan
Standard of food always maintained since they started humbly out of the fish n chips shop in Leeming. Portions now smaller and prices have increased since their move to Nedlands but still excellent Japanese 7 course omakase dinner, the best value in Perth
Vivifoodiediva
Updated 7 Nov 2015<br/><br/>It's still the best value 7 course omakase dinner in Perth!<br/><br/>Just had another yummy meal made with love by Chef Moe. Throw in a lovely bottle of Tattinger bubbly and it was match made in heaven. <br/><br/>The amuse bouche was thinly sliced pickled squid. <br/><br/>Starter was a deconstructed chawan mushi - lobster as the base, egg custard and topped with ikura (salmon roe) and a sprinkle of nori (dried seaweed). <br/><br/>Next up was pan fried cod served on a bed of gobo (burdock root) and seri (wild vegetable) braised in dashi, soy and mirin. The sauce was too delicious so we slurped it up (very unladylike but it had to be done!)<br/><br/>The duck dish was superb. Thin slivers of perfectly cooked duck draped over an inari pocket that is stuffed with chopped duck and potato mash (I think) and a shredded cabbage salad.<br/><br/>Chef's selection of sashimi was firm and fresh salmon, kingfish and scallops.<br/><br/>The salmon belly sushi was wolfed down too quickly... I know I should have savoured every mouthful but it was far too scrumptious!<br/><br/>Palate cleanser was orange peel sorbet which was welcomed after a few fishy rounds lol.<br/><br/>Next dish of beef and pumpkin was anything but plain! The beef was juicy and meltingly tender and combined with the pumpkin and sauce was a taste sensation!<br/><br/>Dessert was black sesame and blueberries. Layers of jelly, black sesame panna cotta and a shortbread crumble. Couldn't work out where the blueberries were.<br/><br/>A thoroughly enjoyable evening filled with good conversation and cheerful dispositions!<br/><br/>-------------------------------------<br/>Our group was lucky enough to book the entire restaurant to celebrate a relative's significant birthday back in July 2014.<br/><br/>It was a memorable evening filled with good cheer fuelled by BYO bubbly/wines and exquisite modern Japanese cuisine.<br/><br/>The menu was plainly written and belied the freshness, simplicity and richness of each dish that was served! <br/><br/>Tuna, apple and yuzu dressing<br/>Tofu, radish and sesame sauce<br/>Salmon miso with enoki<br/>Chef's selection of sashimi<br/>Salmon belly sushi<br/>Harvey beef cheek <br/>Vanilla bean ice cream and matcha<br/><br/>I highly recommend dining at Marumo and joining the "bingo" online reservations system lol. Getting in is like winning 3rd division lotto :-).<br/><br/>The good news is the restaurant is only fully booked the next 2 months (it has been longer in the past). Online bookings for November 2015 opens this Monday. Keep your fingers crossed for me, I'm hoping to get lucky with a table for 4.

Having waited what seemed an eternity to get into the exalted Marumo’s door, my pals JS, Frau K, The Prof and I were like excited schoolgirls waiting to visit their teen crush. Securing a table at Marumo is a mission in itself, and it took me a good six months of frantic internet keyboarding to secure a table. It was worth waiting for. The tiny restaurant features an Omakase menu that evolves monthly, according to produce availability.
Minali Gamage
Given the long waiting list to get a table here I was lucky enough to have a friend gift me hers. Really enjoyed each dish and BYO made it a long and chatty dinner.
Edward
There's full disclosure on the Marumo web site, the Omakase takes time, often three hours, and it is extremely generous, $60 for seven delicate, simple but beautifully conceived courses, not to mention an amuse and a pre desert palate cleanser. . . Still I found the pace exceedingly slow, even as a slow eater, equipped with several bottles of wine (it's also BYO, the glasses are a little too narrow). <br/><br/>It's a minor quibble and not surprising - there's one chef and three wait staff and a small room full to the brim (25-30 depending on seating configuration) with expectant customers. . . What's three hours, when you've waited two months to get a table.
Mel
It is unbelievably difficult to get a booking at the highly coveted Marumo.. but I can assure you it is worth the wait! The seven-course Omakase (Chef’s Selection) menu is devine; the dishes are Japanese-influenced with a traditional yet modern twist. For only $55 per person, you definitely get good value for money! The standout dishes for me were definitely the Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi and Beef Ternderloin & Corn Croquette.
Hungry Caterpillar
I've been here twice, both to celebrate birthdays. Both experiences have been lovely and I will definitely go here again (in fact, will be booking for September!).<br/><br/>Atmosphere: clean, spacious and unpretentious. Has a few nice touches such as the hanging lights. Loved the double walled glasses to keep the free green tea nice and hot!<br/><br/>Service: could not be faulted. Each waiter was attentive, with tea and water being constantly refilled over the 3 hour dinner. It was also nice that they explained what each dish was as it came out. BYO was $2.50 per person, which was not unreasonable.<br/><br/>Food: words cannot describe exactly how fresh, how creative, how tasty and how well presented each dish was. You can tell that the chef enjoys what he is doing and has high standards. I've never been to a place that serves sashimi in plates that have been pre-frozen with a layer of ice on the bottom. It's these kinds of things that make a person truly appreciate the effort and feel good about dining in a restaurant.<br/><br/>Overall: a must try, as the omakase is only $55/p. Portions very reasonably sized but super big eaters may still be hungry at the end. Beware that the dinner will take 3 hours, but with the right company you will enjoy every minute.

For our anniversary (about 1.5 yrs ago), we went to Marumo before they moved from a tiny kitchen in Leeming, seating maybe 15 people per night total (it was a six month waiting period on getting a table). Oh my! It is so worth the wait. Every single thing was divine. Hosts were gracious and it made me long to go back to Japan for another trip. Superb. Love this place.
Outagain
Amazing!. Completely worth the wait to get a table. Service was always present but not in your face and the food to die for! Everyone should dine here at least once!
Hannah Budge
Such great value. We dined at Marumo a few months ago after a long while trying to book a table online. Loved it! Delicious flavours, amazing value for money, and worth the wait.

LOVED IT ! But..... One of the best jap restaurants I've been to, everything was great except the noise level was really loud, I think it's partly cause the place is quiet small so everyone is cramped up

Exquisite. My friend took months to get a booking and invited me along. <br/><br/>I was a bit unsure when I found out we could order but eat what is served but everything was just exquisite. There is nothing at all to complain about the quality of food.<br/><br/>Be warned that it is like a teaser. All the servings are small but so delicious that you want more but that is it. You get what you are served but wanting more of it.<br/><br/>The only downside is that the wait between the dishes can take a while. But that is only because he is the only chef and he really ensure that each dish carefully prepared. Totally worth the wait.<br/><br/>Definitely going back!!!

10 out of 10. This has to be some kind of misprint, but a $55 omakase?! this restaurant is what Nobu's chef omakase SHOULD be.<br/>I would happily pay at least $150.<br/>Each course was interesting, favoursome and well thought out.<br/>Unpretentious and unassuming. If the place wasn't next to impossible to get into I would eat here every month!<br/>My only issue was that the duck was slightly overcooked, but that is probably personal preference.

Marumo MAGIC. Marumo, simply excels in every plate that comes towards you. Service, magnificent, a hard ask to find these days. Small very intimate restaurant, his formula is all about YOU and the FOOD, take your own wine and enjoy his journey into training your palette the Japanese way. May be hard to book but you will be rewarded with some of the freshest food you will ever have. Local best fresh produce dictates his menu. Wait however long to get onto his booking system, it is well worth the wait. The sushi is a tango in your mouth....9/10 coconuts

WORTH THE WAIT. Booked 2mo in advance by their online system. Went last night and the place did not disappoint.<br/><br/>Marumo offers an omakase menu designed by the chef and the same is served to all diners, with the menu changing according to availability of produce... 7 courses, each tapas size, building up to the richest course at the end followed by dessert - a culinary fusion feast!<br/><br/>Among the delights of last night's menu was the freshest sashimi I've ever tasted (whiting, scallops and salmon), the yummiest Tassie salmon belly sushi, a delicious orange sorbet palate cleanser, soy-braised duck with pumpkin, and the most wonderful yuzu + peach icecream to finish. Complimentary green tea was a highlight, with our glasses being topped up all night.<br/><br/>Exceptional food, top notch service (equivalent to the old style silver service), knowledgeable and friendly waiters, and a lovely chat with chef Moe and his wife afterwards. Marumo is THE BEST Japanese I've had in many years. The booking system can make it tricky to get a table but persevere because this place is simply fantastic and has to be experienced to be believed.

Best value for money japanese degustation ever. Moe and Marie have a great restaurant that I would highly recommend to anyone.

Best Japanese and dine in experience. <br/>Loved every dish and my partner didn't eat seafood and they accommodated perfectly . Would go again and recommend highly.

Three months later. It has been a long wait but after trying it, I will now be requesting to be placed on the wait list on a regular basis. The tiny restaurant is kept so because of the high quality control placed by the chef, who prepares every single one of the 7 course omakase dishes by himself. I cannot find fault in either size or taste of dishes and look forward to trying something different each month ( if i get in that is). Love this place and as much as sharing this will make bookings even harder, good news needs to be shared.

One of the best meals I've had in Australia. It's no fluke when a chef prepares a meal where every element on the plate in all 7 courses from the main element, to the sauces, to the little sides and all the frilly bits are all prepared perfectly, with all ingredients treated with respect and cooked ideally. Top class dining, which is a rarity in Perth. Absolutely worth the wait and difficulty in booking
Eating Out Perth
The Best!. When I discovered that Marumo was closing its fish and chip doors and relocating to Nedlands the first question I asked was, “how much will they charge now” The seemingly unbelievable answer was that the price increase has been only marginal, it’s still BYO and corkage remains at $2.50 per head. What a relief.<br/><br/>So what’s changed? Capacity has increased slightly, decor has drastically improved and the patrons appeared a little hipper then I remember on previous visits.<br/><br/>What’s remained the same? The incredible, fresh, elegant and amazing value for money night of culinary entertainment and fine food. The intimate and attentive service from the owner, chef and staff. Free parking! One more thing, you’ll still have to reserve a table two months in advance, which I did on the first of the month, when bookings open. <br/><br/>This is the best on offer and worth the wait every time.

The best Japanese I have ever had. Where do I begin? The beef tataki was ridiculously tender, the salmon belly sushi was heaven, and I would eat only the black sesame and baileys parfait for the rest of my life, if such a thing were possible. Everything we had was better than the last. Definitely worth waiting two months for.
Eve
Good food. Stand out dishes were the yellowtail hamachi sashimi (never seen or heard about this fish before) and the braised duck (full of flavour and falling off the bone). I felt the beef tataki was served a little too warm but the sauce had good flavours. Had to wait one and a half months for a booking on a saturday for two. $55 for omasake you cant go wrong.
Leon Tip
It was great food, lovely texture and flavours.

Relocated, but worth the wait!. Having moved from Leeming to Nedlands, this new revision of Marumo has been open around 6-7 weeks so far. After a brief discussion with the wife/husband team that run this Japanese (dego style) restaurant they divulged that the old place sat 16 people max whereas the newly relocated restaurant seats around 26 maxing out at 28.<br/><br/>The layout allows for several couples, a couple of table of 4 people and 1 larger table accommodating up to 8 people (10 maximum). The pricing has also gone up from $40 per person to $55 per person to accommodate the higher rent I am assuming.<br/><br/>Having never been successful in obtaining a booking to dine at their old premises in Leeming, I cannot comment on comparisons from new place to old but will say both me and Susan left unable to pick a fault with any of the dishes offered. Just a note - they are unlicensed, but you can BYO at 2.50 corkage per person which is reasonable.<br/><br/>The normal fare here is a degustation style 7 course offering with extra starter and palate cleanser before the last 2 courses. The dining experience takes about 3 hours so be prepared to settle in. The decor inside is trendy and the owners/chef/waiters are both friendly and professional.<br/><br/>The menu changes every month with new offerings but the Sashimi and Sushi are permanent fixtures on the menu for the foreseeable future. They are also happy to cater to allergies.<br/><br/>We were started off with a Squid Salad which was refreshing and light. A great starter as there was good flavour within this offering to get the taste buds going in anticipation of the first course. This was offered up next as the Beef Tataki. The Beef was very fresh and appetizing.<br/><br/>The second course was Lobster, Inari and Scallop. Presentation was professional and the dish once again didn't fail to impress in flavour. Pork Gyoza was the 3rd course and was cooked to perfection.<br/><br/>The 4th course was the Chef's Selection of Sashimi including salmon, tuna and hamashi. Once again all the fish on offer was very fresh. We both took note of the clever use of a large block of ice under the fish (with a leaf inbetween) to keep the fish chilled.<br/><br/>Chef's signature Salmon Belly Sushi was the 5th course and this was one of our favourites out of a crowd of high performers. It is really hard to pick them, as everything is so good. At this point the palate cleanser was brought out - a naval orange sorbet. We could actually taste the orange in this.<br/><br/>The 6th course and also the biggest portion of the night was the soy-braised duck (leg). Don't think this was playing second fiddle to all the seafood on offer though. The flavours and presentation with this course were spot on once again and even though we were starting to run out of steam, didn't find it difficult to consume.<br/><br/>The 7th and final course (desert!) was a black sesame and bailey parfait which once again, was faultless. Being more of a savoury person, I have to say this desert was spot on.<br/><br/>Service was friendly, efficient and tactful. Food and presentation was spot on also. Atmosphere and comfort were big ticks also. As there is a larger table of people present usually, the noise can get up to average levels so not a place for an intimate dinner, but we still had a very enjoyable night nevertheless.<br/><br/>I really recommend this place. Check it out if you manage to strike the lotto and get a booking as it is already booked out until the end of July at this point. This is the only thing that will prevent you from dining here. I recommend trying your luck on the first day of each month when they release the bookings for that month. If your after the bigger table of more than 6 people book for 6 and call the number to add more people.

Marumo is a small Japanese degustation restaurant that is well worth a visit. For only 55 per person, he's the only chef and over the 3 hrs offers a wonderful array of food. I am a vegan and also gluten intolerant and I loved the food he prepared. Each dish was flavoursome, fresh and carefully prepared. Service is attentative and definitely worth booking in and visiting!

Marumo has opened! Glad to have this great fine dining degastation in the nedlands neighbourhood. Moe and Marie have worked hard on the renovations and looks great, food is fabulous as always!

I'm writing this for those who are a bit confused. Marumo opened in suburban Leeming in 2011. According to the management, they were planning to relocate to a bit more central location and they took over the place in Nedlands formally known as La Cascade in late 2013. They have been doing renovation since and now it's about to re-open soon.
Sarah
I'm confused about these reviews...Until up until about 1 month ago this site was a French restaurant, La Cascade, that had been on that site for nearly thirty years. As another reviewer has pointed out, the restaurant wasn't open as of 17 March 2014. How can this restaurant have over 500 votes, with reviews from as far back as 2012?
Miss Piggy
Marumo is not open yet. As at March 17 Marumo is still not open in Nedlands. The reviews are a bit confusing I thought. He is hoping that it might be April but he will post on their website when they know when they are ready.

Wednesday Club GourmandsBest Perth Japanese Fine Dining VALUE. Chef Moe Oo's fine dining omakase menu is to DIE FOR and Best Value in Perth with BYO Wines! My standout favourite on repeat visits is the Aburi maki (torched Salmon belly sushi roll with Red Emperor tempura). Our Wedneday Club Gourmands are ecstatic Marumo's has made the move to NEDLANDS from Leeming, after our long Hikes for Moe's exquisite food: <br/>Menu/Food 5 Star Excellence; Friendly & Informative Service 5 Star Excellence;<br/>Ambience: Could only be vastly better after the small cafe in Leeming.

Perfection!. Fantastic! Amazing! Food not only looked beautiful but tasted beautiful! Service completed the experience, as it was as good as the food. We waited six months to get in! Definitely worth waiting. Cannot believe the cost as the quality of the food is the best! Thank you, thank you, loved it.

Wow!. Been here twice so far, i'd be a regular if only it werent so hard to get a booking, fantastic food, only matched by some of the better restaurants in japan itself! friendly service, and great price, lovely experience all in all, thank you! please become easier to book at!!!

Incredible and intimate. After six months of waiting, this was definitely worth it. What an incredible dining experience! Amazing food and impeccable service. Hats off to the chef and his team :)<br/><br/>Oh, and they're moving to Nedlands next year, so hopefully they will be able to accomodate more bookings.

A great dining experience, second time visit, it was really worth the wait! Moe is always so friendly and same as Marie and the other wait staff. My favorite meals for the night was the chawamushi ( it was SILKY smooth no exaggeration haven't had such smooth chawamushi before) and the salmon sushi. Going back there next month can't wait!

My husband & I went to Marumo for my birthday dinner last week. We had not really eaten Japanese before but was told how great the food was. The food was amazing & exceeded my expectations! The service was first class and I told the owners it was the best meal I have ever eaten & I meant it. I hope to eat st Marumo again if I am lucky enough to get a booking which is not easy. Thank you Marumo for a wonderful night.

Magnificent Marumo. Have been a couple of times now, must book well in advance, but it's worth the wait! Great value for money, and top quality ingredients and cooking. Service is fantastic and the ambience of the intimate dine is nice. Love coming back to this place.

The seven-course Japanese omakase dinner at this intimate restaurant was an amazing exploration of textures and tastes. From traditional favourites (like sashimi) to the inspired green tea creme brulee, each dish showcased a different culinary technique and a meticulous attention to detail. The tempura pumpkin with curry salt and shichimi mayo is a case in point. The crispy tempura contrasting with the soft, sweet pumpkin encased within was perfection in itself but the pinch of curry salt sprinkled on each piece added yet another dimension to each bite. The ubiquitous pumpkin made another appearance as a garnish for the sashimi dish, but it was transformed into tiny strips of almost-nutty crunchiness. The dinner began with the delicate flavours of crab miso soup followed by the steamed Mount Barker chicken, partnered with fresh shitake mushrooms in a delicate, ginger infused consomme. The dinner's savoury finale of grilled salmon was the polar opposite of the opening act , with tantalising, strong flavours - the salmon beautifully pink and flavoursome. <br/>We also loved the little surprises along the way- like the palate-cleansing citrus sorbet! The service was excellent too. The dinner was worth the six month waiting list.

Loves it!. I came the other day with my friends. I thought the food were fantastic. 7 course dinner for $39. Could it possibly be any cheaper?<br/><br/>Friendly service, high quality food. Definitely worth the wait!<br/><br/>It would be much better though if the restaurant was bigger :) Overall, I'd give it a 9/10. I would definitely come back again!<br/><br/>Thanks Chef Moe!

$39 7-Course Omakase. Simple, cosy interior.<br/><br/>Service was great, and food was too.<br/><br/>Was enjoying the night until I met the uh, "Lightly-torched salmon sushi with Tiger Prawn and CrunchyBitsTM", which promptly blew my face off and sent me somewhere nice.<br/><br/>I came back to deliver a message, but had a terrible conundrum.<br/><br/>I could tell everyone how seriously good this restaurant is, or I could keep my big mouth shut and keep it all to myself.<br/><br/>I think I'll do the latter.<br/><br/>Wait-

Dont miss it. Fresh, tasty sashimi and sushi. Sorbet to entice the palate. the Japanese food was indeed excellent. Service was great...the helpmate was gentle and polite. U could even observe the chef giving off his best in the kitchen. No wonder, the quality of food was worth much more than its price. Luckily, that night, we didnt miss such a wonderful dinner before we went back to Penang.

Love it love it love it. Despite it's humble premises, the 7 course omakase menu there gives any fine dining establishment a run for it's money . Close your eyes and ignore the fact that you are seated on hard plastic chairs on a basic table and just concentrate on the flavours of the dishes. The service was also great, tea topped up and a fresh bottle of water brought out without having to ask for it. My favourite dish was the Hokkaido scallop on egg tofu with edamame purĂŠe while my children througly enjoyed the soy braised beef with croquette. All the dishes wowed! Even the palate cleanser of the orange sorbet. My children have a little more stamina than most kids so those who are planning to bring your children along, be aware that the whole experience lasts almost 3 hours, ending at nearly 9.45pm. We started at 7 pm. Thank you to Chef Moe as he has made this a memorable occassion for the family. Looking forward to coming back again. The menu changes monthly with sashimi and sushi being the regular items on the menu.
Ize Greater Than Tummy
Booked in November to come on Feb 17th and the experience did not disappoint! The food was deliciously amazing!!! My favourite was the lightly torched salmon belly sushi and the miso caramel ice-cream. The service was really attentive and have already booked to go again with friends - the wait list has grown exponentially! Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to try fresh and tasty Japanese that isn't the same as what you get everywhere else.

The best. Love this place... reason its so hard to get a table is that its amazing. Love the fact that they have one of the longest waiting lists in Perth yet still provide the best vale. Keep up the good work

Happy Valentines. This place was a dream, most of the food I had trouble pronouncing and it was wonderful to be guided by wonderful staff. <br/>The taste sensation is an experience. Such a hidden little treasure and a change from our usual staple diet.<br/>A wonderful experience and well worth the attention of people who love food experience.

This place is a hidden gem. I almost don't want to tell people about it because it's only going to get busier (which means the waiting list to dine here is going to get longer). This place has it all - excellent food, it uses superb quality produce, fantastic pricing and all with the best service around. Can't wait to come back!
Stephen
Fantastic service. Great food. What more can you ask for. Came here on a Friday night. Loved the lightly torched Tasmanian salmon belly sushi. Will be back again as soon as we can get a booking!
Mab
Amazing food & value. Been eagerly awaiting dining here, having read about its popularity. It's all about the food. Tiny place, a modified fish & chip shop in an ordinary shopping centre. Forget that: just try the amazing food: course after course of equisitely prepared Japanese dishes, all for just $39. There's simply nothing like this anywhere. That's why you have to book months ahead. Do it, before it disappears like a mirage.
Eve Fuller
Absolutely awesome Japanese food the sashimi and sushi were to die for - wish they had it takeaway as the next available booking is too far away !!! Great hospitality and service it was a great night out
Pris
Nice!. For those who like atmosphere and ambience, then maybe it's a few points down. $39 for 7 courses in the middle of nowhere pre-booked in advance, I say, it was really good in terms of value and quality. <br/><br/>Don't expect exquisite display and some fancy modern twist on Japanese food. Don't also expect a quick and fast meal or for them to adjust to your timing too much (one guy in kitchen and one front of house). <br/><br/>Just enjoy typical japanese food you like , cooked very well and served hot/fresh in slow but consistent pace. <br/><br/>service was very good too. They contact you beforehand to ask about dietary requirements. Would return !

Must try!. I've never written a review before! But marumo certainly deserves one! The restaurant is hidden away and a little far to travel to from where I live and I had to book 2 months in advance but honestly it was worth the trip and the wait! The dinner had 7 courses including dessert but we also got strawberry sorbet and miso soup in between the 6th and the 7th course! My mother does not like sashimi and surprisingly they noticed that she didn't eat her plate of sashimi and quickly whipped up kingfish tempura with sauce which was amazing! <br/>The sushi was extraordinary with the perfect amount of spiciness!<br/>Food and service was amazing and all at such a great price! Will definitely be back!

Came here with high expectations after the extremely positive reviews. At first glance you would not expect to have a degustation at this unassuming joint, however within minutes of being seated it was apparent that the food and service was deserving of such high praise. At $39 you can't expect the intricate dishes of usual degustations, but you can expect the food to be prepared with great care, and impeccable service from the attentive waitress and chef. Best for couples, not large groups, and dress warm if you are dining in the colder months. edit: sashimi here is mindblowing

Quality Japanese Food. Had a really nice dinner with friends tonight. Really love their 7 courses set menu. We actually got more than 7 dishes as they will have something for you before and during the meal that is not part of the set menu. You can tell by the food quality that the chef really cares about his food and put in afford and heart to cook it. The restaurant is tiny which can only seat about 12-15ppl per night. Which is why they are always fully booked I guess....we actually had to book 1 month earlier to get a table for four on a weeknight....longer waiting list for weekends.....we ended up book for our next visit at the end of our meal, which is 2 months ahead (for weeknights too.....their next available weekend booking is in December!!) But the wait is worth it as the food is fabulous! Highly recommended!

Yumm. Compliments to the chef, this place is the bomb, excellent sushi.

What a gem hidden away in the wilds of suburbia. Worth the GPS adventure to find it. Dress warmly in winter though. $35 for a 7 course degustation and $1.50 corkage for BYO. Incredible bang for your buck. Punching way above its apparent weight. Menu changes monthly. Bookings essential. Highly recommended!

Love the food, love the music and love my bosses :)

Fantastic Omakase!. We had a wonderful dining experience at Marumo.<br/>Fantastic service and the 7 course degustation was beautifully presented and was delightful. The green tea creme brulee and sushi were the stand outs for us.<br/>$35 seems way to cheap as the quality is fantastic.<br/><br/>Will definitely be coming again!

Not happy. Disappointed. The restauraunt is by reservation only and they would not serve us when we walked in. They only offered us take away. We had the take away fish and chips and salt and pepper squid. Small serving size for a fish and chips and was very average. Also it was not particularly cheap. I give it 1/5 :(
Felicity Newman
Beautiful food. Have only visited on one occasion and the entire evening was delightful. Good service and exquisite food. The price isn't reasonable - it's cheap, too cheap for the quality of produce. The degustation menu makes it accessible - which Japanese dining sometimes is not.<br/>I've eaten soft shell crab a number of times and never enjoyed it. Marumo's soft shell crab was, for me, the highlight of this meal.<br/>Just go.<br/>Felicity

Awesome food with a reasonable price made and serve a lovely and friendly couple. Definitely recommended!! Will be back there for another degu soon...

Best omakase in Perth. It's not saying too much that it's the best omakase in Perth since I don't know of that many places which specialise in this style Japanese food. But certainly Chef Moe and his wife knows how to make wonderful food to die for. It has been a long time since the husband I have been excited about Japanese food in Perth. <br/><br/>As an opener to the seven course degustation menu, the tempura enoki mushrooms were light, fragrant and simply more-ish. The second course of gyu tataki (seared beef sliced thinly in a vinegared sauce) was equally light but had more punch because of the sauce. King prawn in a sushi roll, topped with salmon belly proves just how good fresh sushi can be. Sashimi of kingfish, Hokkaido scallops (deliciously sweet!), salmon and octopus made up the four course. Course five was kani kara-age where the batter was crunchy and flavoured delicately, and matched with chilli flaked mayo and matcha salt. The sixth course was a mini salmon-don with miso soup - an interesting finisher to the savoury courses for the night but really, felt just right. Dessert was Japanese glutinous rice balls filled with azumi beans (and topped with it) swimming in Bailey cream. Very decadent yet not too heavy.<br/><br/>Located in a small shopping centre in the middle of the suburbs, it's quite likely no one would think that such a gem would exist here. But it does and it's excellent value. It's a small place which doubles as a fish and chippery between 5-7.30pm (we must go and try as well). After 7.30, it transforms into a highly intimate dining experience. Don't expect fine dining, but it's relaxed and intimate, and most certainly unique.<br/><br/>I wish them all the best and I've already booked my next dinner there!

Nice food. Yummy food but serve is a bit too smaller share amongst us. 1 piece of sashimi each??

Amazing!. Signed up for Urbanspoon specifically to review Marumo Japanese Kitchen! Cannot express how much I enjoyed my meal and can't wait to dine there again. Excellent service and exceptional food - I loved every course that I can't really pick a favourite because everything was so delicious in their own way! We also tried the fish and chips which were yummy too. Highly, highly recommended!

Best value jap kaseiki cuisine. I've been to marumo at once a month. Each time, the kaseiki menu and culinary experience associated with it was different. I'm always struck by the simplicity n fishiness of the food. The sauces prepared with each dish do not overwhelm the dishes and you can taste the fresh produce itself. My favorites - best agedashi tofu, seared tuna, beef tataki in town. They also serve the freshest sashimi and soft-shell crab sushi rolls.
Frances Lyn-Tay
Great food! Highly recommended. Thoroughly enjoyed every little bit of the Japanese degustation. Walked away very full and very satisfied :)

Fish & Chips by day but awesome Jap food by night.. Signage outside says "Battered & a'Salted Fish & Chips ". I think they're in the midst of putting another signage up for Marumo Japanese Kitchen.<br/><br/>Have yet to try their fish and chips but I heard that the batter is like the jap tempura batter so it's light and crispy.<br/><br/>Ive been there twice for the Jap dinner and will definitely be back especially with their opening special at $35 for a 7 course meal! Due to the size of the place and being a fish and chips joint by day, the dinners can only start at 7:30pm (by BOOKINGS only). They can only take dinner bookings of 6 to 12 people max. Top quality food and to be honest I think it's an insult to the chef that they're charging only $35! The quality of the food is much better than any other Jap place in Perth by far. Everything was fresh, beautifully presented and service was great!<br/><br/>Brought friends who had dietery requirements which I mentioned when I booked it in and they catered for it with no questions asked. They catered for my 4 yr old niece as well when I went there with my family.<br/><br/>We were asked if we wanted japanese tea or water to start off with. Then the first course came not long after and we had 2 hours of great food with great company.<br/><br/>It felt as though it was your personal chef cooking for your private dinner guests, as you could see him behind the counter working his magic.<br/><br/>See the photos for the dishes I had!<br/><br/>I would much rather be back here (even if their opening special price increases) than any other Jap restaurant in Perth. It's a small casual restaurant (think Fish and Chip joint but with some decorations around) but the best Jap food I've tasted - almost comparable to Japan!

Best kept secret in Perth for Fish and chip as well as Japaneae Food. The japanese food is creative and yummy!
AZJ
Top Notch!. This humble fish & chips is a masquerade for a home-style Japanese kitchen, offering some popular Japanese menu items as well as their regular F&C. We tried their regular battered fish & was impressed wih the light & crunchy, tempura style coating. Chips were good too!<br/><br/>But their pièce de rÊsistance is their degustation set meal offered for dinner by bookings only. Partly because this small cosy place can only sit 12 (?) & partly because the chef can concentrate on serving dinner customers after the F&C crowd has subsided....<br/><br/>Having tried their 7 course degustation twice so far - we can say it's definitely value for money, fresh & very delicious! Portion size & timing of dishes were great! And presentation was simple elegance.<br/><br/>Some of the dishes we really liked were:<br/>- Japanese style spinach salad - who would have thought spinach was THIS GOOD?!<br/>- Soft shell crab - crunchy & moorish<br/>- Hokkaido scallops - part of the sashimi platter - it was to die for!<br/>- Japanese style beef & potato stew - taste much much better in real life!<br/>- Twice cooked pork belly - enough said!<br/>- Matcha brulee - Green tea brulee - Japanese fusion at its best!<br/><br/><br/>The set menu is seasonal & changes frequently, but you can do special requests ahead of time, & Chef Moe will try to accommodate you! We wanted Wagyu Beef as part of the menu, & for extra $10/pp we had a very yummy dish consisting of Asparagus wrapped in Black Angus Beef & Wagyu Beef. Really really good!<br/><br/>Chef Moe used to work in Hayashi & has great experience in churning out good Japanese food, & now with his own establishment, he can serve top notch Japanese food with his own personal touches & flair. We predict that Marumo Japanese Kitchen may well have to move to a bigger premise in the very near future!<br/><br/>Highly, highly recommended! For $35/head, where can you get this in Perth? Be warned, they book out quite fast now as word of mouth is spreading..... & oh, be sure to allocate at least 2 hours for the degustation dinner. BYO too.

Don’t let its humble exterior and austere interior fool you though. What Marumo may not have in ambience, it more than makes up for in value for money and taste. By the spadeful!...I love the understated elegance of the sign at the front door! The interior and the food are similarly presented – basic but classically stylish.
Donovan De Souza
With 5 of the 6 of us having dined at Marumo before, we were in a unique position to see Chef Moe's progression from his days in Leeming, and we were all in agreement that this visit to Marumo was a definitely step up from the already impressive meal we had almost 2 years ago. The Beef Tenderloin, Sashimi, Tasmanian Salmon Belly Sushi and the Soy Braised Duck were all superb, and if the other courses were not quite as impressive, they were enjoyable nonetheless.

Initially underwhelmed by the exterior then pleasantly overwhelmed by the quality of dinner that night,Marumo more than deserves all the praise it receives from all the happy and full diners that have emerged from this humble little dining venture that is capable of amazing things.
Queen Of Bad Timing
We visited Marumo after trying to get a booking for well over a year. The intimate dinner was only $55 per person and was an absolutely delicious omakase menu.

Taste Test - Food.Life
The food at Marumo was fantastic! So why didn't I give them 5/5 you ask? It was because the sous-vide black Angus was just warm (probably because it was cooked using the sous-vide method but I wasn't a fan) and eventhough all the dishes tasted fantastic, the flavours were nothing new. Yes, yes, I always have something to complain about.<br/><br/> <br/>Each dish was carefully assembled, beautifully presented and everyone's dish was the same in terms of portion size and presentation which demonstrates Chef Moe's attention to detail. I was a bit worried at the beginning that I won't be full as the first few dishes were quite small but the dishes increased in size as the night progressed and we were all full by the end of dinner.

It is literally an old fish and chip that is tucked away in a local shopping complex. This tiny 16-seater does not have a glamorous fit out. The beauty is in the food. Chef Moe Oo rules supreme with a monthly Omakase (Chef’s selection) seven-course degustation menu using local and Japanese seasonal produce. Now people complain about the prices in Perth. Well someone forgot to tell Marumo that you are meant to overcharge not undercharge patrons. For $39 you get such good value for amazing food. This month’s menu included: - Tempura of oyster, caviar & shichimi Mayo - Poached Mt Barker chicken ginger & nori Oil - Hokkaido scallop, egg tofu & edamame Puree - Chef’s selection of assorted sashimi - Lightly torched Tasmanian salmon belly sushi, tiger prawn & tobiko. - Soy braised Margaret River beef, croquette & pan jus - Green Tea mascarpone ice cream The tem

I tried to go to Marumo last year when I first heard about it. A hidden gem tucked away in what had previously been a Leeming fish and chip shop, that was serving up amazing Japanese food. Now last year in May I had secured a booking for late November. Yep that’s how long their wait list was, but I was so excited to at least have a date in the calendar when I would be going. Then as fate would have it I ended up having a work conference in Sydney the week of my booking and I couldn’t go. Woe was me! Thankfully my sister and her friend went along and had a wonderful time and shared similar praise to others on the food front. Now I knew that a move for Marumo was on the cards over the end of the year from Leeming to Nedlands. Slightly closer to home for me and it looked like it would house a few more seats. But the challenge still remained. I needed to get a booking first! So I watched and waited, regularly checking on their website until finally I managed to secure a June booking!! Oh t
Why Yes I Do Eat Constantly
Omakase comes from the Japanese word makasu (任す), which means "entrust". In this form of dining, instead of choosing your own dishes from an à la carte menu, the chef prepares a series of dishes for you at his discretion. Although the whole point of Omakase is to allow the chef to choose what he think is best for you, it's not impolite to put in a request to omit or favour certain ingredients. Typical characteristics of Omakase are a good selection of the freshest fish, seasonal ingredients and immaculate presentation, all of which were present at Marumo.

...for 7 courses of hands down delicious Japanese food (mostly traditional and not too adventurous or creative with the flavours and ingredients) it only will set your wallets back $39 per head. That’s a fraction of what you would pay at some other establishments. I say that’s awesome, and I think I speak for everyone.
