Review The Generous Squire - Perth

Yen
It was a great place to stop by after work for a pint. Fifty lashes beer on tap. Portions were huge, great value for money.
Lauren Dollery
Best place I've been for a burger with the option for an accompanying cheese bath for not only your burger but fries or onion rings too. Nice live music, outdoor vibe area or quieter back restaurant area and even an upstairs function area with more bars
Matt Clarke
Great comfortable pub with a quick lunch - great special nice tasting burger and beer! Great friendly service from the team also

Visited from Melbourne to see my parents and so glad that we dropped in here. Beers and food were amazing! I had a mushroom blue cheese burger, which rates extremely high amongst the best veggie burgers I have ever had! Unreal! Also, the staff were so nice, welcoming and helpful - really was a lovely lunch and experience. Thanks heaps!

Had the burger tower between two and it was more than enough (definitely could have been between 3). Chicken tenders were huge but we were expecting full sized burgers so were a bit disappointed there.
Jarrod Yeates
Went all the way to the city to get the cheeseburger, tenders, and mash and gravy $19 deal that was advertised for that day only to find out that the deal was not on that day because the chef was not in. However, the chef that was there was quite happy to cook a cheeseburger and chips which was basically the same deal for a marked up price.... Then told a 45 minute wait!! Also played 13 dollars for a pint. Absolutely ridiculous price! Plenty of decent places around the same area that are more reasonable in price. Will not be back.

Awesome venue, the bar staff were very catering in letting me and my brother try some beers before ordering. We ordered the no.67 burger with the cheese dipping sauce and was it a experience. Our food was spot on! Very generous sized portions that we couldn't pick any faults with. We did have a small weight for food but as they say, good things take time! Which wasn't a problem for us as we got carried away chatting over a cold beer with a good atmosphere.

As always, great staff, great food, great beer

I came here for lunch mid week. We sat in the restaurant. It was an extremely hot day, so sitting next to the kitchen with the bifold doors open, it was like a furnace - uncomfortable. Service was friendly and prompt. I had the prawn linguine, which was tasty, spicy but gluggy and the garlic bread was literally bit of garlic on toast cut into triangles. Not really impressed with that, especially for $8.

Nice place to enjoy a drink and nibbles. The pink grapefruit punch is AWESOME! I’ll be coming back just for that!! The meat platter is very tasty. Bao buns weren’t the best. The buns were a bit firm, but chicken was very nice
Daniel
Very nice bar/pub food in the Perth CBD. Love the beers from James Squires and the food here is always fantastic. Busy place and you can see why.
Some Like It Hot
Had our Christmas lunch at this place. The food ordered included the steak sandwich, fish and chips, burger, bao buns and calamari. The general consensus was that’s it was good. Portions on the smaller size and you have to order inside at the bar. General pub grub.

Decided to visit The Generous Squire today for a late afternoon feed. The menu is extensive with your usual pub/grub. I ordered the steak sandwich....I wish I didn’t. Tough and chewy! I tried to use a steak knife and it still wasn’t able to cut this piece of meat (porterhouse). I politely went and asked the staff if I could have another one cooked as I literally was unable to eat it. Thankfully the staff were fantastic in this respect and had another one made for me. <br/><br/>Waiting patiently for another steak burger I was hoping it would be completely different to what I had. Unfortunately, it was exactly the same.... <br/><br/>

I have been here a few times and on both occasions the food was excellent and the service reasonably good. A little expensive for a pub meal however this is not your traditional pub. Would recommend
Mrs M
What an amazing place to have lunch.  Really good food not just your standard pub fare.  And like their name they are really generous with the servings.  Grilled chicken burger and fries is good value for $20.00 as are the other lunch dishes.  Definately worth a visit.
Neil
Good for a Friday beer with mates! Bar food is okay and won't blow your socks off but the atmosphere and beer is worth a visit and they have the footy on too!
Fiona
As soon as we walked in we were hit in the face with lovely smells coming from the kitchen. We were the only ones in the restaurant so were seated quickly. Ordered the lamb rack while my husband had the pork belly. Both were cooked perfectly however I found that there was so much fat on the actual lamb that there was hardly any meat. Pork belly was really nice though and both were good portion sizes. Definitely a nice restaurant with good ambience and good service.

This is first tine we’ve been to this pub and absolutely love it. We ordered angus beef scotch fillet and the quality is very good. The main highlight for me however was the quality of service and attention from the staff. I really enjoy being there and love the food and service, top quality, highly recommended.
Eero
I ordered the brisket steak which was just okay. I feel it was lacking flavour generally. It could do with more salt and tastier gravy. The chicken parmi seemed popular with everyone else, massive serving, but I thought it tasted average too.

Came here for a quick light lunch - the Salt n pepper Squid was really tasty. The slider trio were not so nice with big meatballs inside - Edible and nothing wrong with them just not anything to rave about and only 2 got eaten. <br/><br/>Others ordered steak and steak sandwich with fries and they had no complaints - l would go back for the squid it was a decent serving size to share and loads of flavour!

Came here just before peak hour for lunch on a Wednesday. Managed to beat the crowd but service was still slow despite the fact that we were the only table at the restaurant area. When the food finally arrived it was a huge disappointment. We ordered the pork belly and 3 pig pizza and both dishes were a massive let down. Pork belly was overcooked, meat was tough and the crackling was a little chewy. Pizza was underdone and very doughy eventhough the pizza base was thin. Overall a very disappointing experience and pricey for the quality of food received. We came here a year ago for lunch and really enjoyed it so don't know what happened since.
Mischa Joligard
Fantastic brewpub inside of an old building with pub fare and mostly home brews... I would definitely come back here again next time I find myself in Western Australia.
LifestyleByLily
An extremely disappointing experience yesterday!<br/>Our food was thrown together and that was evident from what we received. <br/>We moved into the bar area and I waited as the female bar staff served the two guys beside (who came to the bar after me), she knew I was standing there for quite some time. Luckily another staff member served me eventually. <br/>About an hour later, there were no lemons, limes or ice for drinks and the guy who served me was extremely rude about it. <br/>Needless to say, we left after we finished our drinks and won't be returning!<br/>Terrible service with bad attitude!

My favourite place for amazing gourmet bites & the chilled drinks on a sunny day, not to mention the excellent staff and the great brewed beers.<br/>The Seafood including the king prawns, calamari & lobsters were simply amazing & fresh, couldn't ask for better. The ambience is simply the best for Friday evening sundowners after work, with the rooftop open area on Murray Street which makes it well located.

Been here many times and will come back again. The food is not bad and it's nice to sit along shafto lane, have a few beers and watch people walked by. Reasonable prices, relaxing atmosphere and convenient location.

We went to Generous Squire as we had some avid beer drinkers in our group. It was lunch time so we decided to have a bite here too. I really didn't know what to expect since some places like this can make good money based on beer alone and subpar food. Surprise, surprise! Apart from the well valued prices and large servings, the food was good. Fresh and simple ingredients. I had the lobster roll, chips and shared a calamari. The lobster sliders were fresh brioche buns, delicious sauce, lettuce and the lobster 'cake' itself was ok. The calamari was well seasoned, tasty and perfectly cooked (kudos since it's so easy to over cook). The club steak was ridiculously massive, the hungry men were very happy and it was good! Crazy good value for $23. This place not only has good beer but good food. The Long Island iced teas were great!
SunnySideUp
Great place for a beer on a lazy Sunday arvo. We had meals but unfortunately they were quite average. I had the wild rice and prawn salad which was quite bland. There was more white rice than wild rice... Very deceiving... Prawns were small and nothing special. I will still come back here but probably just for drinks and maybe a bucket of chips.

After work, we went out looking for a burger joint recommended by a colleague called Grill’d, but then we saw The Generous Squire first, one of the many pubs in Shafto Lane, the alley connecting Murray and Hay. We stood there for some minutes, and when no one came to usher us in, we made our way inside to pick our own table. I think there were only 3 servers at the time in the entire 2-storey building. (It has a seating capacity of 300 persons.)
Georgia Palladino
The restaurant section of the generous squire is very small but has allot to offer! The food is great with allot of variety on the menu and it's not too overpriced, the service was very average but nothing too bad. Would definitely come back here for the ribs!
Kev
Was here with work colleagues. Had a steak sandwich and it was really good. Good size, nice fries and excellent service. Last time I was here was over 3 to 4 years ago and the food was terrible (went there 3 times back then to make sure that it wasnt a bad day) It's definitely changed for the better.
LittleAsianGirl
This place has great range of pub type food. They have a seated restaurant area with wait service. Delicious food and great beers. My favourite is the mushroom risotto.
YSL
Portion was generous but the pork belly was extremely greasy and I don't believe the fat/oil was drained properly. I finished one piece because I didn't want to waste $30 but couldn't touch the second piece. I still felt sick after 3 hours.
PerthfectBreakfast
Previously rated 3.5/5 but the past two times I've been in two months have not been impressive. Earlier in the year I had chilli spicy squid, chips and lobster sliders. What came out was fishcake sliders. When the waitress asked if I enjoyed my meal I said I didn't like the sliders and she got defensive and said that the patties are 100% fresh lobsters and the chefs get the tails and make patties out of them. If that was the case, why would you ruin the produce like that?! I guess I was disappointed because I was thinking juicy chunks of poached lobster in a brioche roll with lemon mayo like you get in America.<br/><br/>Tonight I wasn't surprised to see the lobster sliders had been taken off the menu. I don't know why I didn't learn but chose to get the meatball sliders tonight with tomato sauce, smoked mozzarella and pesto. It was sooooo dryyyyy and lukewarm. Even the mozzarella hadn't melted properly. Service was great though and luckily we got 25% off with the a Entertainment Card! <br/><br/><br/>===================<br/>May 22 2016<br/><br/>Always a decent feed at The Generous Squire. I like that you can order from the full menu at the bar or for a proper sit down meal with table service. <br/><br/>Despite being a Saturday night, our meals were served within minutes! We ordered the salt and pepper squid, garlic bread with olives and dips, wedges and duck tacos.<br/><br/>The squid was lightly dusted in flour and tender. The Nam Jim dip had a good kick to it. Garlic bread was delish but I thought it was odd to serve both olives AND tapenade with it. The duck tacos were nice but the tortilla themselves were too dry. <br/><br/>We came as a group of over 20 so it was great to be able to individually order and pay for our meals. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food!

Very unaussie confessions: I'm not a fan of pubs and I'm not a fan of beer. But I couldn't resist the tempting pictures courtesy of Zomato so wanted to have a taste for myself. I feel much more Aussie after this. I love that they have 3 areas to choose from: outside seating, inside seating and further inside dining area which is separate from the rest. <br/><br/>Holy moly the servings are fit for a footy team. The signature James Squire fish and chips (barramundi, little French fries and tartare) were average but the pork ribs were astounding. In 3 words: tender, sticky, meaty. <br/><br/>I don't like beer therefore my tastebuds are untrained to the taste of beer. So why not try the $14 beer paddle? I now love beer. There was one that tasted like cat wee to me but I've never had cat wee so I may be wrong. Loved the dark beer with coffee notes, the 50 lashes and pale ale. James Squire, you have me converted. <br/><br/>Highly recommended with your cohort of meat eaters and beer chuggers. Oh and service was brilliant too!
James Brown
Came with a party of 10, 3 of us ordered the steaks, all medium rare. Of them, all 3 arrived blue, much to my personal disappointment, so much so that I asked for a refund, $35 for a blue steak, no thanks. <br/>Tldr; good drinks, unimpressive food.
Emma
Loved this place!! Wouldn't usually think to walk this far up Murray street, but was definitely worth it! So many beers and ales to choose from including a sort of tapas slate of beers for tasting. As you walk in you can see the small brewery, a fantastic little feature. Music was 90s era, good old bangers! We sat up on the rooftop area to enjoy our drinks. I tried about 7 or 8 different ales and favoured the chancer James squire. Will most definitely be back for a chilled night out with mates! Great ambience and friendly, knowledgable staff. Not sure of food yet, but a nice pub grub menu! Will be back!
Ines
My absolutely new favorite beer place !! The hop oil IPA was just so good. . Left me wanting more.. so indulged in their tasting board oh my god ! Such a good idea, we got some fried with it they weren't home made or the best and they came with no sauce so next time will have a better look at what we can grab while enjoying the beers. The place itself is massive and comfy ! You even get to see a tiny bit of brewery on the side. Staff is friendly and funny (who wouldn't be working there !), it's clean and quick ! Definitely my new go to after work spot !
Ben Goodman
The duck tacos were actually good, and i'm not a fan o duck. Went on a Thursday for lunch, very slow service. The steak sandwich was a joke. For what they charge it could be soooo much better. The chips are like oven bake frozen chips and thats just not special
Stuffyaface
Brilliant service! Food was yum, not your usual pub menu. Appreciated recommendations on food and drink from staff and extra effort to fit us in on a busy day. Recommend for a work lunch.
Boris
Pros:<br/><br/>Nice area/ambiance.<br/>Good service. <br/>Food came out fast.<br/>Got our booking correct.<br/><br/>Cons:<br/><br/>Beers were too expensive.<br/><br/>The burger wasn't really a burger, it was a meatloaf in a bun.  A real burger is made with pure ground beef - no breadcrumbs/onions/carrots/etc mixed into the patty.  The mixed patty was soft and squidgy, textually wrong.<br/><br/>Trying to save money on a burger patty is not good form when you're charging $24 for it.
Emz
Went for a Christmas lunch on Friday as a big group. The delivering of food was a little mixed up as the waitpersons was a little lost as to which table orders what. <br/><br/>Lemon lime bitter was really good. My colleagues commented that it was real lemon like bitters we had and it was really good.<br/><br/>Food wise I think it was very average at least to me. Got a pork sliders but the pulled pork smelled like lamb and tasted funny. I just did not like it.
The Urban Bento
Late Saturday night dinner. Kitchen was still open at 9.30pm. Better than average pub food and large serves. Had the ribs and burger both of which were good. Ribs could have been grilled more. It seemed like the sauce was just poured on. Coleslaw it came with was a little bland. Overall decent pub feed.

I often lament the lack of genuine service in Perth, but this place is an exception. Friendly staff at a busy lunchtime but not distracted from great service. Mushroom risotto was incredible - delicious and a good portion too. But my main rap is for the Manager and staff - somehow the orders did not go to the kitchen - no big deal - mistakes and technology happen. They offered me a free drink and continued their great service. To all the competitors, don't blame a mistake - make up for it. Well done.

Nothing bad, nothing great. Normal serving sizes and standard pricing to suit. Typical pub food with good beer. Go across to Grilld if you want some better burgers.
Hungryhenry
Had lunch on Monday night. Pork belly sliders are worth it every time. Duck tacos are better than last time but need to be warmer. Had chicken and chorizo on bronchitis which I didn't mind but the sauce was a let down. Worth a visit for good pub food.
Izzy Alyce
I had the filet Mignon medium rare and my boyfriend had the fish and chips. Both were quite nice especially compared to most of the pubs we've been to. The Filet Mignon was perhaps a little over done and was hard to cut and a bit hard to chew at times. It would've been nice to have some potatoes on the plate instead of so much onion as well. We both did enjoy our food however
Some Service Please
My husband and I headed to the Generous Squire for a meal last night, and oh my god (not in a good way). We shared a rump steak special, and it was genuinely the worst, most appallingly bad steak we've had. Absolute F-grade meat, our steak was mostly fat and gristle, and we couldn't hack through it with the massive steak knives they served it with, let alone chew it up enough to swallow. <br/><br/>The waiter cleared our plate of half-masticated connective tissue, and inquired how the meal was. We politely told them what we thought, and their response? "This is the special, so we use a cheap cut of meat. If you wanted something of better quality, you should have had the fillet." Ahem, no, you're a restaurant, supposedly aiming to serve its clientele with decent food, and that steak was genuinely disgusting. Don't tell us that because it was a 'special' you have license to serve us dog food. Rump can be good, it you bother to actually serve a rump cut, rather than fry up the butcher's offcuts, plate it up and pretend its actual food.<br/><br/>It's such a shame, cos we've been to the Generous Squire before, and always really enjoyed it... last night, however.... awful.
Sin
Fish of the day was fantastic. Swordfish with a beautifully cooked potato galette and a great sauce. I enjoyed it so much that I didn't even look at the menu the next time I went.
Kirsty7
Wow $7 for a glass of lemonade....that has got to be a record breaker of a price? It was $11 for a pint of beer but at least the beer was craft brewed; the lemonade was postmixed.<br/>We jumped in to The Generous Squire for a quick bite of pub grub and ordered the Angus burgers. The burgers were oooozing juice (fat?). The pattys were too thick and it made for messy uncomfortable eating. While we appreciate the staff can't control the clientele frequenting the joint; the customer running around with his trousers around his ankles cemented our decision not to return.
LittleGirlBigFood
Generous ..... Name could be a tad generous. Because I'm not a huge fan of the generous squire. Old boot pub smell. Uninspired drinks and nibbles. But still a good place to chew the fat with mates.
JZ
Love it! Good food for dinner, and good atmosphere on a Friday/Saturday night if you're chasing a night out for some drinks with friends!
Adam Levak
Excellent. Ordered the Moroccan meatballs AMAZING! Then we had the parpadelle tiger prawn pasta and butter crumbed chicken breast, recommended by staff, AMAZING! Waitress Karen was superb and helpful. Ambience is really good, Highly recommend.
Daz
Beware the great Perth con. Go here if you're happy spending $8 on a postmix lemonade. Used to like it here but now its just blatant profiteering. I hope the mining slump really takes it toll on this place
Jay-c2407
Great atmosphere & awesome food. I came here with a group of 6 for dinner before a show at the Comedy Festival and was extremely impressed. I had the Fish and Chips (Barramundi) and on the rest of the table we had an assortment of different dishes including the Pie and Sausage rolls.<br/><br/>The chips were great with a beautiful crunch and the Tartare sauce was so tangy complementing the crispy battered serves of fish perfectly. However I did not have the best item on the table.<br/><br/>One of my friends had the Pies and Sausage Rolls and they were PERFECT. The chunky steak pieces in the pies melted as soon as they hit your mouth combining with the beautifully mixed gravy and the flaky, crispy crust. We nearly had everyone fighting over them.<br/><br/>Even for those that don't drink beers and don't know what they like there are plenty of options available. The best idea is to order one of the tasting paddles so you can try a small sample of a range of the James Squire range. This was such a great idea for us as we had a few people that decided to order the samples that were served off of that paddle.<br/><br/>Enjoy
FoodBean
Reliable, good beer, good value (for Perth). This is a good place for lunch - we've been several times. Choice of bars. Food is pretty good. This time we shared the Duck & Pork Terrine and Slow Cooked Brisket Sliders. Both very nice but we felt more flavour would be good: excellent presentation but slightly bland and both were very cold like they'd come straight from the fridge. We enjoyed it anyway. The fig jam was really good. Good selection of beers and wines. Service was quick, friendly and helpful. The place had a good vibe, too.
Nikki Alyse
Disappointed. Stopped in Sunday night for a meal & drink. Was extremely busy but was impressed with the speed which our food arrived. Each ordered the Angus burger & chips. On paper it sounded delicious but what we received was anything but. The beef patty was falling apart, the burger had zero sauce & everything was bland and flavourless. The chips had no salt, the only saving grace was the small bowl of tomato sauce which we needed to add taste to our meal. <br/>This is a great place, extremely busy, great atmosphere but the food just didn't cut it.

Sercurity on a power trip. Tonight we decided to come to this pub as we come here all the time and it's normally very good however tonight it was busy and we didn't even make it in the door.My partner had thongs on so fair enough they said sorry no thongs. After taking me shopping all day we thought a head and I had his shoes in my bag so he changed and went back to the door only to be told no sorry mate your to drunk. At this point an time we had had nothing to drink! I feel due to the fact that it was busy and they had told him no sorry no thongs but had changed his shoes they already didn't want to let him in. This sercurity guard seems to be on a power trip and took pleasure in not letting us In . Due to the fact I manage a pub for a living, I found this to be very poor and if one of my guards made me loose a table of 6 I would not be impressed!!!! Might consider else were now for our saturday night drinks . Went down the road they had no issue letting us In and we enjoyed a great 3 course meal and a few weekend drinks
Shaun
Got 3 share plates for lunch. I really liked the vegetable tart, the slow cooked beef brisket was tender within the sliders though needed a bit of a boost in flavour, the onion rings were delicious, and so too, the lamb ribs. Lovely all round meal.
Jane66
Average. We were in early for drinks and dinner. Took ages for a waitress to come and take our order (it was not busy) and there were plenty of staff around. We ordered a selection of share plates as we didn't want a main course. Took quite some time to arrive and to be honest, wasn't worth the wait. The sliders were quite nice, but the claim on the menu that they served hand cut chips was rubbish. They certainly were NOT hand cut, they were frozen chips and they were pretty awful. Tortilla strips served with one of the share plates were over cooked and tasted awful. Getting the bill was a bit of a task too, no-one came near us for ages. Will not be going back and certainly would say there are better places to eat around this area.
Jesika
Generous is an under statement. Meals are enormous! Great atmosphere. Get in early to grab a table as it gets busy very quick.
VKee
Had lunch here. The waitresses are friendly and efficient. Food is at a good standard.
Facebook User
Great. Fast was fast to come out.. and tasty too... very happy! Will defiently go back
Foodie
Great service. We came here recently I'm a group. The service was very polite and informative.<br/><br/>Last time I came here I loved the food so I had high hopes. The lamb ribs did not disappoint they were tasty and the meat was tender and the marinade was scrumptious. Several people on the table tried them and thought the same too. The brisket sliders were a let down though, very dry and lacked flavor. I nibbled one and my partner had the other but didn't finish it either. The chips were cooked to perfection and nice and crispy. <br/><br/>Overall it was good but I would skip the sliders.
Cameroncoops
Doesn't stock full James Squire Range. If you are after the Jack of Spades Porter or the Constable Copper you will be disappointed. <br/>You won't find this out until you are at the bar ordering though as there is no beer list on the menu.<br/>Many of the surrounding bars will have one or both of these available if they are your favorites.<br/><br/>Bar service wasn't great, but the food was tasty if a tad over priced.<br/>This place doesn't stand out from the crowd as far as bars in the CBD.
Nikki
Really yummy!! Becoming a favourite!. This has fast become my workplace's venue for farewells or other functions. We have been 3 times now and not once has anyone been dissapointed with the food. Absolutely delicious, and the service is always friendly and efficient. Will continue to come back here!
Michelle
How fantastic is this place great food great beer fantastic staff and accessible!! It makes such a difference to a wheelchair user to be welcomed into such a great pub.
Chelsea Sanders
One of the members of bar staff was so rude. Worst customer service I've had in ages
Brian.greenslade
Worst customer service in ages.. I was at the Squire with a friend earlier this evening ordered our beers and proceeded upstairs and outside. Yes we opened the door to the upstairs patio to get out, and the misting system was on perfect- or so we thought. After we had a quarter or so of our drinks the 'duty manager' came out and berated us for being there- ask why would we think it was ok to open a door?? you need to come back inside we were told- not asked- told. We responded by saying that we were unaware that the area was closed as there were no signs nor was the stairway roped off, this only earned us a disdainful remark that the door 'was closed for a reason'. Still attempting to be lighthearted about it as we were moving inside I pointed out that I would have to open the door to the toilets as well, perhaps we shall simply say the 'duty manager' did not see the humor. All told one of the most dissatisfying, rudest customer 'service' experiences I have had in a long time.
Becca
Funky pub and gub. Had beers and entrees here a few nights ago, it has a great atmosphere and most of the waitstaff were friendly. They food was great, a lot of care was taken to prepare it for the pallet and eyes. Great place to sit and watch the world go by. Recommend it.
Kathnjeff
Best belly pork ever, excellent service and great beer. Can't go wrong!
FoodGloriousFood
So good. Love this place!<br/><br/>Wicked interior, cool music, friendly and efficient service.<br/><br/>Waitress (Carla/carly?!) answered all my questions regarding the three dishes I couldn't choose between; pork belly, lamb pie, or fillet mignon.<br/><br/>I went with her recommendation, the lamb pie and my mate had the fillet mignon. Both were demolished and she dealt with our tipsy questioning and character very well.<br/><br/>Very happy with food, and service, and as always James Squire's various beers or cider (
Paige
Went for dinner on Wednesday night with family. Requested table for five, they gave us table for four then had to sit outside as no other tables were available.<br/><br/>Hubby and I had fish and chips. Chips were lukewarm, tartare sauce tasted like Mayo and fish was over cooked. All came out on pretentious looking wooden platter that would have been forgivable if food was good.<br/><br/>Won't be going back, very disappointed.
I Exercise To Eat
I've had fond memories of the food here, and was so excited to try it out again. Ordered the steak sandwich and the bread wasnt even toasted! Clearly said on the menu it would be. I also got the donuts for dessert and would've honestly enjoyed Donut King a lot more. The donuts were cold and dry. Partner wasnt overly impressed with his Gnocchi either, so we definitely won't be back to eat. Was a disappointment all round.
Food 2 Run
Great burgers and beers, a drink before the ice hockey game...
Tonka Loves Krystal
Inconsistent.... Went there for lunch today ... The seafood platter starter was amazing. But then the Caesar salad and the wagyu burger as mains were disappointing.... The rocket within the Caesar salad tasted a bit strange in such a salad and the dressing was not the best either. It's a shame. I've had many Caesars in my time & that was one of the worst I've had.
T122
Always a great place to have a few drinks. Friendly staff and the door staff are very polite which makes a huge difference and shows in the general vibe of the pub.
Georgelewinsky
Great place!!!. Great Ambiance, good food enjoyed a lot
Stevendavisonmusic
No Doggie Bags?. Good food but no 'license' to take away left overs, most stupid thing I've ever heard!
John Doyle
More than just pub grub. Generous Squire has consistency good food. The fillet steak is better than what you would find at most (high end) restaurants. And of course, love the cider!
A.sw.tie
Unpleasant. Beer, ciders and wines were all great, although pretty overpriced, even for Perth standards. Food and atmosphere definitely a let down. Staff were friendly but make it clear that they are running a business. Did also see a young girl get thrown out, which is fair enough given their policies, however, she did seem very young and they did not allow her to go back inside just to get her friends so she wouldn't have to be alone. Seemed a bit harsh given that she didn't put up a fuss about getting kicked out, just appeared to be a bit afraid to be out by herself late at night. However, that was not the concern of the security who appeared happy enough to throw her out on her own and accept the business of all her friends. Was pretty unfortunate and perhaps a bit of care could be given to their customers. Definitely would avoid in the future just to feel a bit appreciated by staff when you are spending quite a few hundred dollars on their drinks and food.
Melt It
Great prompt service with a good selection on the menu. The only problem is the smoking which is allowed out in the alfresco area but still affects you if your sitting inside :-(
Foodlover
Generous Indeed. A couple work colleagues and I visited today for a business lunch and we were very impressed.<br/><br/>We went for the tasting plate special which was lovely, a variety of flavours; chorizo, Turkish bread, olives, roasted capsicum and feta, deep fried prawns - and a good sized serving between the four of us as an entrée.<br/><br/>For mains two of us had steaks which were cooked perfectly, another had the vegetarian risotto which was plated nice and tasted fab, I had the lamb shanks which were delicious.<br/><br/>The drinks were fine, some nice wines on the menu.<br/><br/>Will head there again for sure, staff were excellent and the manageress came past to check if everything was ok which was a nice touch, topping up our drinks.
Miss Jane
Great. Met friends in the city and we ended up at Squires, great choice as the service was the best and the food was exceptional. I had beef fillet which was cooked perfectly. My husband had the fish of the day and he was really impressed. Not one of our friends had a complaint we all left happy with the service, food and the atmosphere.
Kurt Sofer
Arrogant staff.. Apparently asking for chicken on a sandwich instead of beef is so difficult it requires a 5 minute conversation and attitude from the wait staff.
Mandy
Great!. Surprisingly good food! Fair prices too. Will be back!
Lucy Griffin
Nice food. Been here a few times, food has always been nice. Great bar too for a few drinks.
Spat412
Mediocre. Attempting to compensate for very average food with huge servings. Unimpressed.

Ticks all the boxes!. We choose The G S for our pre show dinner and the staff were almost invisible but their service and attention to detail was superb. The tasting plates got 10 / 10, My eye fillet was the best I have had in ages, served rare to medium - why is it that most chefs can't serve up a good steak as ordered? The snapper was again top drawer, and overall the six of us rated this one of our most enjoyable dinners for a long time. We look forward to our next visit. Oh, and the beers were good too!

We were afforded a table on a particularly busy night when surrounding restaurants were booked out. The service was great and the food was delicious, we had rosemary and garlic bread followed by calamari. Highly recommend! We will definitely be returning!

Won't be a next time. Waited 40 minutes for a 21 dollar, 4-ingredient, mediocre salad.

Bad service, awful food! Don't waste your time!!!

Great place!. Huge portions of yummy food, great service, great atmosphere all with reasonable pricing for both drinks and food! I am yet to try the rooftop terrace! :)

Don't have too much fun!. Based on several experiences here have found this is not the place to go if you want a good night out with a group of friends. Management seem to think any group over 4 people are there to get drunk and destroy the place. On entry told we wouldn't be served any drinks with a group of 8 girls... Because they thought we were a pub crawl. No negotiations or respect for the fact we were stone cold sober! Drinks are overpriced and staff/management arrogant and disrespectful. have had one too many bad experiences here now. wont go back.

The only 'generous' things about this place are the mark ups and the abundance of grumpy stuff. Would it hurt to smile when you charge your customers a disgustingly pricey $7 for a glass of coke (which is mostly ice)?

Great atmosphere!! Love it always has great food and good staff

Lovely. The prawns, squid very tender. Mussels delicious. Big serve!

Lunchtime service is abysmal. Tuesday lunch in May 2013.

Great Food & Great Beer. My Wife and I shared the Tasting Plate which was excellent. All of the food was fresh and tasty, the Golden Ale Battered Barramundi was the stand out on the plate. As far as the beer went, the Pale Ale was the winner for me.<br/><br/>This place gets crazy busy on a Friday afternoon and carry’s on into the night which can make it quite difficult to get a table, so if you’re planning on eating I would recommend either getting there early or booking ahead.<br/><br/>I recommend this Restaurant and will return, even if it’s just for a pint of delicious ale.

Got potential. I had the Paella. For $32.00 my expectations were high. It was nice, but more of an Italian marinara than Paella. Needed more Cajun flavor and less sauce. Would have been great with cheese and crusty bread. Great beer and location though. Staff were attentive.

Good Spot for Work Lunch. My friend and I both ordered the Eye Fillet and promptly licked our plates clean! It was delicious!! Coming from someone who's not big on steaks, it was perfectly tender (even the well done steak my friend had) and the risotto and sweet chips were a great addition.<br/>Beautiful day to sit outside for a lunch break but was disturbed a few times by a lot of cigarette smoke from people standing very close to the door. <br/>The dish was very expensive to have often but we had a voucher so it worked out great this occasion.
HungryofPerth
Very tasty. We booked a table for Sunday night - wanted to book one for Friday, but we were told they don't take bookings for Friday nights. When we arrived, the place was half full, we were shown to our table and ordered drinks. Service was quick and professional. The food we ordered come out within 20minutes. The portions were quite generous. Chilli beef salad was simply delicious, the dressing was sweet yet spicy and the hokkein noodles gave it a nice crunch. Pan fried barramundi also needs a mention, very tasty with a lot of healty vegetables. We used the Entertainment Book voucher, so it was quite affordable. We will certainly be back for more.
CC
It was ok. Setting quite nice, went for a late lunch on Sunday, the place was quiet, staff friendly enough, food average, I had fish and chips, batter over cooked, chips over cooked, came. with garlic mayo, I would prefer tartare sauce. Big serve.
Tim
Great Service. We started with the beer tasting palate which is a great idea. My wife then picked the 4 Wives and I had the Porter. The special tasting plate was scrumptious and my wife I had the eye fillet for main course which we enjoyed. My daughter had the barramundi in a spicy red curry and didn't enjoy it as the curry overpowered the fish. You lost the delicate fish flavours you get with barramundi. The service was excellent and the staff were very attentive considering how busy the place as.
Sue Lim
Service average. Went there on. Thursday evening ordered a barramundi and they forgot my order.
Liz
Best Barramundi ever!. I ordered the Barramundi. It came with pumpkin fingers, bok choy, corn and had a red curry sauce on the top. It was amazing!!! Hands down, the best Barramundi I've ever had!!!! The crispy skin in the fish was just incredible and every element on the dish was cooked to perfection! I will definitely be coming back here again!!!

Pints. Paella is good , beers are cold. left a happy man

Superb. The girlfriend and I ordered a cacciatore sausage as an entree, with the Pesto chicken and a tasting plate for mains. Entree was basic, but a decent size, and tasted good with the lemon juice. My Pesto chicken was simply amazing. The chicken breast was huge, very tender and the various flavours of the pesto, rocket and fetta salad, with the red & green pepper ratatouille, and the sweet potato mash was unreal. The mrs had a tasting plate which had great little samples of battered baramundi, arancinni balls, beef skewers, salt n pepper squid, and quiche was a great mix. We had a voucher which brought the price down, but would have been happy to pay full price for that feast. Was so full, and when washed down by the best beer in town, my dining experience was complete. Will defininately be back
Monique
Staff was rude, the girls were just flirting with the male customers and not paying attention to the ladies, The atmosphere was amazing if only the staff was a bit friendly then I would go there again.

Why can't I get a pint of soda water?. I ate at the Generous Squire last night. Food was fine, atmosphere was a tad noisy, but nothing out of the ordinary for a pub. However, I can't understand why they are not allowed to serve me a pint of soda water!! They have pint glasses, they have soda water on tap - but the server flat out told me that they couldn't serve me a pint. Instead I have to buy a piddly little glass of soda water, for what is probably twice the cost of a whole bottle of the stuff from the supermarket! I'm currently 8 months pregnant - its not like I'm going to buy a pint of beer or cider if I can't get a pint of a non alcoholic drink. Surely allowances can be made?

Delicious. Visited the generous squire on the weekend, i had the paella which was beautiful, nice and spicy and big big portion A pint of delicious Shafto's reward to wash it down.. Its a winner
Jutty
The food is terrible and uninspired. They haven't even cooked fish and chips properly. I expect better for the premium pricing.
Mitchy Boy
Great food. Went in today for a impromptu work lunch and had the steak sandwhich and a pint of their shaftos reward.........heaven. Would recommend to anyone who works in the city for a meal and a cold crisp pint.
BarnsburyBlake
It's okay. Squires is not bad. The food tends to be a little too salty, but in general it's far from terrible. Durty's next door does better grub, but doesn't have the nice setting that Squires does.
Lucky Bags
Good. Great service for a pub. Staff were friendly, efficient and accommodating. I also like this place because there are no stupid rules. You can split the bill if you pay by card and you can book a table for dinner straight after work.<br/><br/>Food was delicious and great value. One of the best pub's in the CBD.
Ronnie
Good feed. Big serves ,tender steaks ,win win

The Beer!. First thing - Avoid Generous Squire on a Friday. The after work drinks crowd over run the place and it is nearly impossible to get a drink or food. On the bright side, 6 of us fellas went to watch the footy here on a Saturday afternoon and ordered a heap of Pizzas and Tasting Plates. The food was nothing flash but came out fast and was tasty. The venue is just quality spread over 2 levels. The beer selection is one of the best you will find in Perth, especially on tap. Will be back next footy season. Until next time ... 7/10
Taste_orgasms
Decent.... Came here for the dinner the other day and got the tasting platter which was on special. It was good... not great... the arancini balls and egg tart were nice but the calamari and satay were so so.... the fried fish was a bit too oily for my liking.... we were seated upstairs which was nice and quiet.... the outside area downstairs looks nice for a drink... so may be back for a drink again.... not really the food.
Spiro
It's a pub..... Get what you expect from a pub.... Don't get revved up about eating.... Just drink... It's what a pub is for.,.

Delicious rump steak. Huge portions and my steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare. Service was attentive and we were in and out within an hour. Will definitely be back again.

Fast and friendly service. We came here for a 21st birthday for lunch on a Saturday. There was about 20 of us. We all ordered around the same time and before we had even gotten back to our seats the food was already coming out. Everything was fresh and delicious. I especially loved the steak sandwhich. All the staff were lovely too. Loved it here.
Alana
A favourite for Friday work lunches. Servings are a good size and would recommend the tasting plate, steak sandwich or the soup of the day.
Mickey
Skinny Steak. Service was good and friendly but the food was less than average pub fare. At $40 the Cut Of The Day was the skinniest T-Bone I have ever had. The beer is the highlight.
Mev
Talk about ripped off. Ordered house wine and pot of beer, this cost $16.50. <br/>I queried the cost and I was told that the price of alkoomi chardonnay cost $11. I told the guy I only want house white and he said we dont have any. This joker sold.me.the MOST expensive wine. we were going to have dinner here but with staff like that I wouldn't give them one more cent

Beer good.... Beer is awesome..no doubt about it..awesome venue..how ever it might some weird, but there are not foot rest in the tables...there are on the chairs...<br/><br/>food was ummm ok...it has been better...will always go back for the beer...overall i would recommend going there

Sunday afternoon for a pub meal, the fine for an ok T-Bone steak was $45.00, throw in some bread and some drinks and the same for my wife and I left minus $200.00, don't feel I got anything close to $200 in value, at half the price it would have been spot on.
Amanda
Upstairs an excellent spot for a function. Saturday night, and although a bit chiily outside on the balconey, the food was excellent for a large function. Came out in a steady stream, was fresh, hot and extremely tasty. Especially loved the prawns, beef and chicken satay and pies.<br/><br/>Note - midweek is nice. Share the tasting plate, very good value.
Mameshiba
Just the usual.... Sterile, over priced and packed on Friday nights where service is a joke. There are better options around.
Lucibel
Ok food. Went here for dinner after work, once the crowd thinned out.<br/>Got a grilled chicken sandwich, i think it was. Food is ok, but overpriced for what it was.<br/>Probably better off heading next door for dinner...

Will be back!. Awsum will be back

There is nothing great about this bar in terms of food, drink or service but I always seem to have a great time when I come here so they must be doing something right!
I Love Food
Disappointing. I went here a couple of weeks ago with friends for a Saturday night dinner. How disappointing. I had the steak and fries for $40. Firstly, the steak was overcooked, more med well done than med rare, the sauce had no body, was too runny & fairly unpleasant. The chips were probably the best part of the meal, but I could have gone to a local take away and bought some for $5, rather than paying $20. I was very disappointed as I had high hopes for this place. I wouldn't bother eating there again.
Miss Robyn
Overpriced Decent Food. We arrived and it was not too busy but about 15 minutes after it got really busy and it took a long time to get anything. The food was good but way to expensive for the simple fare.
Michael Epis
Very big portions and the food was great. Had the paella and it was choc full of seafood, chicken and chorizo. Good music too, an enjoyable sat night with friends in the outside tables.
Arthur
The bouncers at this place are a joke. I would rather spend my hard earned cash elsewhere. Imagine how much these bouncers are costing this pub in revenue. Haha who cares - they obviously don't. They are so over the top it is ridiculous
Tameryn Mallett
Good for drinks but terrible for food!. After work drinks are Ok at the Squire but the food - NO! I don't know how they can charge so much for disgusting food like that, frozen pizza and squid with no taste yuk, and it wasn't even full. I won't be back for food!
Foodiephotog
Good Fish & Chips. My friend and I both ordered the Chancer Battered Barramundi and it was good value at $22.<br/><br/>There were three long finger-shaped (yea, quite narrow) pieces of barramundi fillets and A LOT of chips on a bed of salad (bean sprouts and some greens). <br/><br/>Overall, it was a good meal - the chips were really good! The portions were also generous and both my friend and I could not finish the chips. Service was good and they have an open-plan kitchen.<br/><br/>We used the Entertainment book voucher (one complimentary main when another of equal or greater value is purchased). Will definitely be back to try more dishes.
Les
Great place. Avoid Fri/sat night. Fri/sat nights usually very busy.<br/><br/>But good food. Good drink and nice people behind the bar.<br/><br/>Thats all i ask for.<br/><br/>Tad expensive drink but good quality.
Jade Koellner
Hot and spicy chicken and chargrilled vege stack mint yoghurt and chilli oil!!! Winner, winner chicken dinner.
Jamie
Overcooked steak. Out of a group of 5, 3 of us ordered the Tucker bag. All of our steaks were over cooked by about two stops.<br/><br/>i.e. I asked for medium rare, received medium well.<br/>A friend asked for medium and got well done.<br/><br/>The rest of the meal was nice though, and it didn't ruin our dinner.<br/><br/>I thought the prices were fair and the portions decent. The service was good and the staff friendly.<br/><br/>The highlight was the beer, I personally would recommend the golden ale!
Kraz
Get the Paella. For a pub......the Paella is pretty special......far better than Clancey's one which claim to be a "fish" pub. My mates always get the steak sandwhich but the hidden gem at this place is the Paella!!! its full of all the goodies and has a great flavour base.<br/><br/>Also they have a great range of beverages...I particularly like the cider
Gary J
Steak n cider. Quenched a very dry throat with a pint of orchard cider followed by a good steak. The value for money for the meal was good as was the service on this visit. Will be back for more food and cider
Todd
Good food but pricey for what it is. Service varies between average to fantastic. Their tasting plate is worth a try.

Wow rude staff!. Came here for a work function on a lovely Friday afternoon. Arrived around 3pm and had a great spot on the roof top bar. After a couple of hours it started to fill up and I went to look for the toilet. I was told by the bouncer that if I went downstairs to go to the toilet I had to queue up to come back up and rejoin the group, what?! Same thing happened to my collegue who ended up queuing to get back up and retrieve her handbag. Have the bouncers no common sense?! There are no toilets upstairs so what do you expect people to do?! After this I chose to put on my thongs for a short while as my feet were hurting from high heels (we were in a standing area). I had seen on the sigh 'no thongs after 7pm' so I thought this would be ok, how wrong was I! A bouncer marched over to tell me that I was wearing thongs and had to leave (it was 6.30). I calmly pulled out my heels and replaced my thongs and decided I had had enough of dealing with bouncers who think they are God. The 2 drinks and the food I had were ok but completely overshadowed by the terrible staff. Won't be back in a hurry.

Average. Where to start...No table service yet quite pricey for very average food. <br/><br/>I had the tasting plate so i'll break it down:<br/>Tart - Soggy cold tasteless<br/>Skewers - cold and over cooked<br/>Fish - fine, best thing on plate but still underwhelming. <br/>Arancini - fine, at least they were hot, not a real stand out though. <br/>Octopus - cold, slimy and soggy I'm waiting to get food poisoning from this one. <br/><br/>We booked 3 weeks in advance for a large group of 18 people yet I still had to sit on a very impractical "child size" table which I couldn't fit my knees under (I'm 168cm female - so go figure). Food came trickling out over a 30 minute period. Yes we had a large group, but the reality is - if your kitchen/seating plans can't accommodate - DON'T BOOK THE GROUP.<br/><br/>My pint of cider was cold - it had better bloody be for $10 from a bar maid who appeared rude to every customer except me for some reason!<br/><br/>Not to be too critical but I was disappointed at trying to eat my average, yet steeply priced food and being distracted by the waitress' cellulite because she was wearing such a skimpy mini skirt. How come the dress standards don't apply to the wait staff??!!<br/><br/>Overall - very disappointing. Won't be back in a hurry.

Great service, despite hiccup. Despite a hiccup (order did not get relayed to the kitchen - computer error), the outstanding service afterwards more than made up for it (as did their unprompted refund and glass of complementary wine!).<br/><br/>I had chicken fettucine (huge serve $20, delicious) and friend had the tasting plate (also very large and filling $20).<br/><br/>Lovely decor, feels 'modern' very light and bright..<br/><br/>What could have been a disastrous encounter actually turned out so well I'm looking forward to going there again.
Shaun Ludgwick
Dinner. Very good food and big serves. Easily the best pub in the city.
Daniel Harvey
Paella Perfection!. Arguably the best Paella in the world. If one doesn't devour this gastronomic treat at least weekly, then one needs to live more. I heard on the grapevine that the Hyde Park hotel was endeavouring to emulate this dish. Personally I avoid being within a 5km radius of that slum, however I was reliably informed the Hyde Park attempt made bile seem edible. The paella at the Squire though - - first class!
Khrystyne S Cordi
Awesome!. Booked a table for 5 ppl on Saturday night at 6pm. Great service, seated quickly and told that the place gets very busy so we should order asap if we want our meals to arrive quickly. Drink orders were taken, boys had the beer and girls had vodka lemon limes. First VLL was with real lime and perfect, second was done using lime cordial and too sweet. What the?<br/><br/>Food was fantastic and decent prices! I got a tasting plate to share with my gf, definitely enough to fill us up. Fish & chips was also spectacular. I'll definitely be back.

Wake me up when it's time to go.. Very average food. My rosemary lamb pizza was very bland and underseasoned. Boring tasteless cheese and an even more boring base. One of my party had the margherita pizza - looked awful - a few sad halved tomato slices, more boring cheese and blah base. He fell asleep half way through his meal.<br/><br/>Other dishes coming to the table involved more gigantic mounds of tiresome pub grub. Yes, servings are enormous but who wants extra humdrum?<br/><br/>Service was a saving grace. Very friendly crew at the Squire. Shame the food falls so flat.
Nesscritic
Generously Priced. I ordered the Seafood Paella - really nice - only minor was a few crushed up mussel shells within the meal but the taste and size made up for it. Friends snapper was huge and another thumbs up. Very well priced (dinner and drinks)...biggest problem was locating a table to eat dinner on. Even mid-week is hard so maybe book the restaurant section if your planning on going there to eat.
Austin's
We enjoyed our experience at the squire, although there is a few areas of cooking that could be Improved. I had a steak with the onion rings and salad. The onion rings were cooked perfectly with a nice crunch. Unfortunately my steak was overcooked throughout half of it. The fettucini was cooked well and had bags of rich flavour, possibly with the bacon overpowering the dish towards the end. Service was prompt. Food 6.5/10 service 7/10 decor 6.5/10

Not enjoyable. Went here for a drink and a small meal on a sunday, the pizza was super oily and not very pleasant! and the staff my god utter rudeness is all i can say!
Marisi
I had the tasting plate....will not order anything else on menu. Tasteless. If going order anything on menu consume many beers before hand.
The Burglars Dog
Beer at its best. Great beer in decent surroundings. Food is your average pub menu and for Perth standards not bad.<br/>After being hauled around the shops on a hot Saturday its a oasis in a pub desert thats worth heading to.
Madeleine
Fantastic beer, average food. Coming from a huge fan of Generous Squire Beer, I find it hard to go so far as to dislike this place. The beer is wonderful, the design of the place is very striking, and the staff are really lovely and friendly. <br/><br/>All I will say is that the restaurant section of the Squire is a little bit out of place, a little bit too formal, and I have to wonder why they would put it there instead of continuing the design of the rest of the place. The food is quite average, (I had the tasting plate and my friend had a mediterranean pasta), and it can also be quite pricey. <br/><br/>I'd suggest steering clear of the restaurant, maybe sticking to the 'pub food' section of the menu, and you'll find a great place to have a few drinks.
Scooter
Good!. Had dinner with 8 guys here on Saturday night and I was impressed. We all ordered steak and they all came out cooked as we requested, they were well rested and seasoned, and the sides were fresh and tasty. The service was excellent and friendly. My eye fillet was $33 and based on the quality of the meal and service I was happy paying this. Note that they don't do drinks table service on the outside tables. This is a little weird. Overall though - loved it and will be going back.

The Stingy Squire. The Generous Squire or Squires as it has come to be known has the distinct advantage of being the only pub that caters for the 'professional' demographic of Perth's CBD. There is the CBD Bar on the cnr of King and Hay but that tends to be frequented by tourists, flight attendants (boys and gay guys take note) and lads on business lunches. The only other competition is Tiger Lils (grimey and full of douchbags in Tapout tshirts) and the Moon and Sixpenece (grimier and full of kiwis in yellow vests and assorted Englishmen). <br/>So Squires is always busy. Fridays especially are hectic but one of the better options for the work crowd IMHO.<br/>To the food: I have eaten here a number of times, mainly because there aren't that many options around the place. The tasting plate which used to be $15 and is now $20 was good value at the former but not so much at the latter.<br/>The steaks are diabolically bad and waaay too pricey. Plus the kitchen staff suffer from that all too common affliction of not comprehending the term 'rare'.<br/>The pizzas are woeful. Far too much topping and the bases are gooey even straight out of the oven.<br/>Verdict: great place for a post work drink. Staff are always friendly and decent beers on tap. Restaurant is sub par and expensive - avoid eating here.
Andrew Kelly
Nice. Newish modern brewery style restaurant. The decor is very warm, cosy and trendy. There are plenty of James Squire beers available on tap. We went for dinner and were impressed by the bistro style meals. The price is on the upper end for bistro meals but are good value for the portion size. It was a great atmosphere in there even for a wednesday night.
Benza
Nice place, good beer. Food was pretty over priced. Wish I'd read the previous post about the steak sandwich because I had the exact same problem. We ordered the Rosemary garlic and cheese pizzas for entree. They turned out to be parsley garlic and cheese, but by the time we could find waitstaff to talk to about it our hungry table had eaten them. When some one did finally come over, she tried to tell me it couldn't be so as they wouldn't have parsley in the kitchen .... What the? On the whole, staff were friendly, the beers good and the place is nice. Recommend it for a couple of quiet drinks, but not a meal.
Mark Question
Nice spot. Great beer, seriously. Squires is probably my favourite of all of the "boutique" beers coming out of Australia, and I really enjoy a pub dedicated to serving it. Tasting paddles are fun, I adore the porter and there's a few other company's beers, wines and spirits. <br/><br/>Food is pretty good. The lack of any vegetarian main meal makes me happy, but whether this was an oversight or a deliberate gesture I don't know. The lamb pizza I had was really nice, the paella my mate had was also a really decent meal.<br/><br/>Service is patchy, with some of the older male barmen and managers excellent, but some younger female staff are a bit on the rude and unhelpful side.<br/><br/>A lot of people moan about the price, but I didn't find it at all unreasonable, and quite frankly, people in Perth need to stop being so bloody tight.

Decent nibbles. Went to a 21st at the upstairs function room. decent pints and the nibbles were better than what most pubs offer. any pub that isnt on the main strip of northbridge is alright by me
TimTam
Tasty Food if a bit crowded. TimTam visited the squire for an after works function. Upstairs was the function room which either overlooks the bar downstairs or Shafto Lane depending on which room is allocated. Even at 4.30 on a Thursday the place was filling up. Food arrived spot on time. It was warm and tasty. The squire has certainly thrown down the gauntlet to its near neighbour Durty Nellys. TimTam will be returning soon.
Spoonmaster
Really good food, excellent service from our Canadian waitress, you could argue it wasn't a true paella but the portion was good and the flavor was good so as long as it was enjoyable it shouldn't be knocked, it was pub food after all! Beer was naturally good!
Chris
Beer Barn. Was looking forward to a lunch at the newish squire. Having dined at the Sydney squire pub I had high expectations of the fit out and food. James Squire seems to have put all its creative energy into their slick marketing and fantastic beer as the interior of Generous Squire is boring, an overload of glass and concrete looking just like The Saint. The service was good and we were greeted and seated very fast on a busy Friday lunch. I ordered the open chicken sandwich and was greeted with stale bread, a tired looking bit of chicken and a sliver of brie. At $22 this dish was way too expensive and I have grave doubts for a kitchen that can't nail something as simple as a sandwich. My colleague ordered the open steak sandwich and experienced similar problems with the bread and stringy meat. Unfortunately Perth gains another by the numbers pub with a restaurant tacked on as an afterthought.
Shem
Nice paela awesome beer. Chris liked the Chilli Muscles.
Cookingchook
Had a steak sandwich there and it was probably the worst ive had anywhere. For $22 it was also a rip off. The steak was so full of tendon it could barely be pulled apart with fingers and the bread was not up to the task of holding it together. The chips were so poorly cooked they were dryer than the 40' day. Luckily the waitpeople and bar tenders were great - I was surprised how good the service was. Otherwise it is just another overpriced pub who needs a decent chef.
Little Slippers
I personally thought that their service was friendly and attentive. It’s worth trying as their portions were just like the name of the restaurant “The Generous Squire”. <br/>
Pubreview.com.au
The steak was cooked really well and wasn't too fatty or chewy. The 'home style' tomato relish was delicious and packed full of flavour. The only thing I could fault them on was the servings were crazy big. I couldn't finish all my chips and still felt so full. Could be worth considering cutting down the serving sizes and bumping the prices down a bit.
May
There were 2 big arborio rice balls which were very nicely done. The rice was nicely cooked through and held together. The flavours were just nice and sort of felt like egg fried rice/risotto. The salt and pepper calamari rings are quite the STARS on the plate. Very lightly battered and you can still actually see the calamari rings.

Likes: large servings, prompt service; Value for money: reasonable, if you share a large meal between two people; Overall: good place to catch up with friends for a work lunch

To be fair, it was nice, but just not to my tastes.

If I lived and worked in Perth, this would be a perfect place to go for Friday Night Drinks.

I can say I will be back for not just their drinks but also their food next time! But I think I’d just stick to their pub grub.
