Review The Royal - Perth

Good service nice food beautiful view thanks. Chicken parmi was juicy and yummy. Oysters so fresh. Calamari was yummy too but wish it was served a bit more.

Visited this place to celebrate my birthday earlier this year. We decided to go to East Perth for a walk but ended up having lunch here and our experience was surprisingly great! Lived in Perth in 2013 and never dined here before. Extremely pleased for this accidental find. Good food, nice surroundings, 5 out of 5!

Great view looking across the water, I had the Barramundi with eggplant and potatos. The fish which was so fresh and perfectly cooked. Fries, garlic pizza was amazing too! Portion was huge and great value for money.

Beautiful location, great service and large pub grub meals. Good spot for a session 🍻

Not for me. Because they don't even have fresh juice nor tea or coffee. Don't like the mocktail. But the Barramundi was 10/10, really good. The dessert were nice but too sweet for me. Parking is not easy and expensive on Wilson. Spend $24 for 4 hours parking. Staff were friendly.

Oh, I so enjoyed my visit to this superb little pub. It was a wild and wet day in Perth, and the sensible person would have stayed in, heating on, and watched the AFL on the TV. I jumped in a rideshare for a quick pint and lunch at The Royal, having read a delightful review calling it a 'Soulless, dystopian pub'. I believe that tells us so much more about the reviewer than the venue. The bar staff were all incredibly friendly. When I got there, the place was packed, so they were engaging but professional and efficient. Once the game started at Perth Stadium, it had cleared right out and I had some very fun, entertaining chats with the hospos as they had more time on their hands. So in the end, I never got to the game. I stayed where, as one bartender observed: "It's warm, it's dry, and the beers are full strength." The food is top notch too. Great place which I'll definitely return to.

It was very quiet at 10pm on a Saturday night. So there were no queues for drinks and good drink services. The tequila was smooth. We had a great night but would have been better with some music

The linguine was over cooked, consisting of a few prawn heads, a few long strands of rubbery calamari and a small piece of white meat that I assume was once some part of a fish. I doubt if there was any chilly or other spice. I had a couple of mouth fulls before calling it quits. What was once a great place with wonderful food is now a shadow of its former self.

Changing the menu to stay fresh is always good, but changing the quality and essence of a place, makes the Royal no longer a winner. We loved going to the Royal, it is our local and we still head back frequently. However, the new menu has been leaving us disappointed. The marinara in the pan (our absolute favourite) has been removed from the menu and replaced with a fettuccini that is less than the standards you would normally expect. Same with our other meals - they were ok; but not the delicious, quality food we have become accustomed to from the Royal. Hopefully, things will improve and I can put this review up to 5 where The Royal used to be.

I like the Royal. Great location, I enjoyed my beer and burger. But waiting 20 minutes at the bar is ridiculous. If you're going to advertise to the pre game crowd, you need to put enough staff on to cope.

Went here yesterday for my mother’s 70th I ordered fish and chips only to come out as 1 little piece of dry fish and a handful of chips in a small basket and be charged $25. Needless to say when leaving we went to my local deli/ lunch bar and ordered fish and chips prawns scallops squid rings all for $25 as well and it fed 3 of us and was better quality. Please don’t reply to me with one of your standard replies like you have done with everyone else on here as I’m not interested just improve your restaurant. Will not be going back there again as it looks like nothing is going to change even after a lot of people are saying the same thing.

We had lunch on Sunday at the Royal to celebrate my sisters birthdays. we all ordered the barramundi with salad. i just want to say how disappointed we all were with the dish the fish was bland and the chard salad looked like it came from a bag you buy at woolies. the dish cost us 36.00 dollars each. sorry to say we wont be returning. we have always had good meals here not sure whats happened but to us we felt like we were ripped off.

Great location, we went Saturday afternoon to early evening, had a few beers, all hipster beers available, which is ok, but a few standard beers would be good. Menu was very disappointing as only really more of a lunch selection, I thought as such a big dinning area, they would have a different menu, but only the one menu as we asked. Seems to be set up for drinks only and expensive ones at that, lot of competition around in Perth, so u need to improve the selection on your food side. Peoples Dogs were annoying in there as well barking and carrying on, we have dogs, but don’t find the need to take them to a pub with us.

Booked my Birthday lunch with friends and family as always enjoyed my experience here have to say was very disappointed this time around with not only the food choice, also the price and lack of presentation. The fish said with a rainbow salad which only considered of green salad along with the mango and that was it and the fish well if you blinked you would miss it and you charged $36 which was very disappointing to say the least. Not normally one to complain but it was for Birthday and felt quite embarrassed for my family n friends that I had recommended this place. Have you changed your chef by any chance? . The dessert of the salted caramel should have come with a litre of water as it was so dry and felt like it was a few days old... Really disappointed to say the very least. I hope you take all this on board and make some changes... Not a happy customer right now

We took my Dad here for his 91st birthday on 2 Jan. We were very disppointed. It took an hour to get our meals even though it wasnt very busy. Dad and my husband had the battered fish and chips. The batter was way to thick fish rubbery and too few chips. The restaurant itself was way too hot. 38 degree day and the doors were left open and no evidence of aircon. Saving grace was the waiter who did his best. Change your chef. My son who works nearby recommeded it and said fish was always good. It wasnt yesterday. High quality means consistency.

We had lunch on 12 May. The Royal is such a lovely setting but this was ruined by a Gordon Ramsay wanna-be yelling from the kitchen, the delay in service and average quality dishes served to us. The waitstaff were clearly doing everything they could to compensate for this. As part of our meal we ordered a seafood platter which was average. Even the pre-potted desserts were disappointing. Our party of 6 who have dined at The Royal multiple times will not be back.

Food was good, service was great, no complaints what so ever. Very impressed for first time visit. Do think the menu was a bit short, but the quality was fantastic!

Highly recommend this venue! We had such a fun day today for Melbourne Cup! Staff are so amazing and friendly and the food was fantastic! Thankyou so much to Kaitlyn for arranging our table

Left this place feeling absolutely ripped! Group of 7, waited an hour for my parmi, by the time it came out everyone had finished there meals. Feedback from the other 6; cold steak sandwich with just lettuce and tomato (not even cheese), cold under cooked burger, expensive drinks, no music, no atmosphere, dark gloomy room to eat in! Oh not to mention the surcharge on a $230 bill! Icing on the cake! WTF!! Avoid this place - had nicer meals at a cheap pub, some say nicer burgers at maccas.

Have not been here for a while however have noticed prices are now at a good level. Enjoyed the ambiance service and food. Would recommend.

Food: average to good; Location: tick; ambiance: tick; staff...they try hard but I sense a lack of support from above.<br/>I have been to "the Royal" on numerous occasions and always leave feeling just a little underwhelmed.  On the most recent visit I vowed never to go back.<br/>A group of 8 of us were attending the U2 concert at Optus Stadium.  The Royal is barely a 15-minute walk, so we pre-booked a table for 2 hours prior to the show.  On arrival, we very politely shown to our table and were cautioned that food would take about 45 minutes to arrive.<br/>Some of us went off to the bar to be greeted by a crowd 4 or 5 deep trying to get the attention of the slow-moving, seemingly oblivious bar staff.  There were no more staff on than you would expect to see on a normal week-day afternoon.  I gave up and returned to the table, to be informed that drinks had been ordered via a waitress.  Yaaay!  We followed this by ordering various share plates and a couple of mains - again cognizant of the 45 minute wait.<br/>As we sat there parched, we followed up on the drinks several times.  "Yes, they're on their way" we were assured several times.  55 minutes after the order - I kid you not - the drinks arrived, followed by the food after just over an hour.  They finally arrived ONLY after one of our group walked back into the restaurant area and said she would not move until she was escorting our drinks out!<br/>In fairness, all the staff were apologetic and the poor bloke who was in charge gave us an extra bottle on the house and adjusted the price of the food.  His diligence was commendable and he did say that 8 or 9 staff had just failed to show up.  Unlucky or a sign of poor morale?<br/>In effect, we had 10 minutes to eat the food and down three bottles of wine.  We missed the support act!<br/>My star rating reflects the efforts this guy made to remedy the situation.  However, this ALWAYS happens at the Royal and the owners evidently don't care as they know people will keep coming back for the views and the vibe.<br/>Not us!

Lovely setting nice and relaxing. Close to ferry terminal and bus. Pleasant menu good range of food. Worth a visit

I tend to try the chicken parma at a pub on my first visit - it’s a solid baseline to compare. The Royal exceeded expectations. Awesome Napoli on the chicken, generous ham, perfect amount of cheese and big schnitzel. Chips were excellent and so too was the simple rocket salad. Would have been 5 stars if the salad was dressed, the chicken was more tender and meal didn’t take so long that my lunch partner had already finished his bangers and mash before mine arrived.

Went for a Mother’s Day LA based brunch enjoyed fried chicken and maple bacon with zucchini fritters, I was really impressed how the fritters were fried perfectly which is a rarity I feel. Other family members also had smoked salmon and poached eggs and steak Benedict which were full of flavour and tasty.

Great beer & food.. service it’s great also knowledgeable. I only stopped in (this time) for the guest tapped beers which are always rare, limited & also of a super high standard! The few times ive eaten here the lamb shoulder & calabrese pizza is my goto foodie picks!

The view, the staff and the venue are amazing but don’t expect quality dining here. I pity the staff having to serve that rubbish with a smile. It’s a pub and it is what it is. Average food at a high price. Have tried it on a number of occasions and the best value and quality is the pizza. The ingredients for the chowder on the bar menu - all processed, and who would even consider a marinara for $45?? Say no more. Great spot for a drink but the food is a no for me. I don’t like leaving negative feedback, but honestly this place doesn’t care about its food. They should just serve chips and pizzas.
Milky Teng
Great view, food was ok but not outstanding. Market fish and mussels were from the special menu and they both lacked tastes. Pork balls and roasted vegetable salad were from the normal menu and they were better. My advice is to think twice before you order anything from the special menu.

Great ambience and view. Good to sit outside if the weather permits. Their seafood menu is quite extensive and some menu are good for sharing. Their antipasto platter was substantial and perfectly done. Their seafood menu is pretty good too and service was attentive although I could see it was a full house when we were there. Quite impressed with the overall experience, will definitely come back.

Waited 30 minutes to be served/seated/acknowledged so we left and got served straight away the place next door. Royal has gone downhill over the years and we won’t be back

My family are frequent restaurant diners and have previously dined at the Royal which is beautifully situated on Claisebrook cove, a perfect spot for an early evening spring dinner. Tonight our party of 4 settled in for some good food and pleasant conversation. We placed out drinks and mains orders with our very pleasant server and before long our meals were delivered. I often enjoy a good, tender steak and ordered the sirloin. <br/><br/>When you're paying $38 for a medium rare sirloin with a bit of mash and a few broccolini stalks, you expect a reasonably tender steak that's easy to cut and chew. When instead you get a thick vein of gristle with a couple of bites of meat, it severely dents the enjoyment. <br/><br/>After attempting to cut through the steak with little success and after no more than 2 small bites, I politely asked our delightful server to take the plate back. <br/><br/>After seeing the returned plate, the chef was reported as saying by another server who approached us combatively that, sirloin always has a vein of fat and that if I'd wanted a cut without, I should have ordered the rump. I'm not a chef, but even I know the difference between marbling (fat) and gristle. Marbling, or a fat vein as he apparently called it, adds flavour and tenderness to well cooked steak; gristle as bad as this, just renders it inedible. The server also said that the chef wouldn't cook another sirloin as he allegedly claimed I'd eaten most of the steak which was clearly untrue. The plate was barely touched and anyone could have seen that. He also apparently refused to discuss the matter, and by then, none of us was in a mood to remain anyway. <br/><br/>My party of 4 left behind our drinks, much of our meals and all the goodwill we had when we arrived half an hour earlier.<br/><br/>Extremely disappointed.

We shared a pizza and salad and a serving of the chilli squid between three of us. The food was great but what really stood out was the service. The waiter certainly knew his wines which certainly added to the meal. The view over Claisebrook inlet was lovely. All in all, it was a great lunch.

Tonight was a real shock as I have lived in East Perth since 2000 and have had High end accommodation that hosts Parliamentarians, consulates and many other business people and tourists, and have not hesitated to tell them all to visit the Royal for a great night of good food and good service. However, we received none of this from the restaurant supervisor or waitresses in the restaurant tonight, maybe this is why the restaurant is so quiet these days. The supervisor was very condescending and totally nasty. However the bar manager was extremely good as has been our experience in the past full of knowledge and very helpful when choosing a really good bottle of wine. $130 but worth every cent. I cannot recommend the restaurant as it strands. and suggest they take a good look at the Raffles for some tips as we also eat there regularly.

A balmy evening in Claisebrook inlet, and always a great spot to linger on such evenings. Easily the best waterside area in Perth. Having had bar snacks and beers many a time at The Royal, it was finally time to try dinner in the restaurant. <br/><br/>So how was the food? Well it ain’t that adventurous. But it doesn’t have to be. My sirloin was a decent piece of good quality beef, and properly cooked medium rare. Tick. The chips were ok. But they were perked up by the jus/gravy which was in a generous pool under the meat. The small accompanying salad was adequate, the flavours being notched up in strength to suit the meat and gravy by the addition of beetroot and decent goats cheese. Tick. The other diners seemed to enjoy their food too. The only criticism that I heard was the comment that cucumber in the burger was a bit soggifying. <br/><br/>So while the standard of the food isn’t in my opinion up to that of the location, it’s perfectly acceptable. So go and enjoy a beer and that waterside tranquility.

Boyfriend and I went a couple of weeks ago, service is great, good wine selection, although had to wait for quite a while even just for the drinks. Food is really great and the view is amazing but it wasn't really busy so was just kinda wondering why
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
Stunning location, switched on and friendly staff plus gorgeous lake views. Went for NYE dinner and we were seated outside as requested. Staff were attentive and polite, although they forgot to bring us the specials menu after we asked for it, oh well. Chorizo starter was nice, bread was a bit burnt though and chorizo was served floating in a pool of oil. Nice sausage though! Mains came out so fast. Pork Belly was lovely - crispy in parts and soft and melt in your mouth in others. Flavour was nice but could have been a bit more flavoursome. E enjoyed her Cajun Chicken Burger - added haloumi was epic. Would def come back for a quick bite.
Zoodle
Very poor food. A group of 9 of us and not one dish on the table was nice. Steak was chewy and a cheap cut of meat. Chili mussels completely tasteless and had no chili. Chicken burger made of pasty bun and had the thinnest slither of chicken and a tiny bit of halloumi. Two glasses of lemon lime bitters both looked different, coffee was weak and tepid. The food quality is seriously compromised though they give you cloth napkins! Service was attentive but the food really lets it all down. Wouldn't recommend going there.

Put in a couple of reviews of the Royal over the last couple of years, and this place is like a Rock! Reliable, Available, and Good service. They serve a range of bar and restaurant food through the day where others close. Along with excellent beers and anything else you’ll want to drink. Where the new Camfield is attracting crowds, this totally beats it for quality and ambience. Check out the Bar snack Bruscetta! Different and delicious. (Pic).

The Royal on the Waterfront has always been a favourite of mine. It is a great place for all occasions, whether it's a casual drink and snack on a lazy summer afternoon or a more formal celebratory dinner in the Restaurant area. There is a wide variety of exceptional beers on tap and in the fridges as well as a variety of cocktails, wines and spirits. I came here for my birthday on Saturday night and I had a great time. The food was delightful - I started with oysters which were lovely and fresh and then had a main of the prosciutto and scallop risotto. I am a very harsh critic of any risotto I have when out, but this risotto exceeded my expectations. It was bursting with flavour, creamy and perfectly cooked. The rest of the table also enjoyed their meals thoroughly. You will notice that though I stated The Royal on the Waterfront is a favourite of mine I have only rated it 3 out of 5. The reason for this, unfortunately is service. Our waitress was cordial enough throughout the meal, though we did have to try to get her attention a few times to order food and more drinks. Not too big a deal. The end of our meal ended on a slightly sour note. My boyfriend and his friend went to pay for the meal, another friend went outside to smoke and I went to the bathroom. When I came back out, my boyfriend and friend had returned to our table to finish their drinks. They had just sat down when our waitress who had served us told us that if we wanted to finish our drinks we would have to either go to the bar or outside as she had to "get the table ready for the next service". This was around 9.30pm, there were about 4 tables still occupied and the rest empty. The waitress was rather abrupt, closer to rude. I felt like we were stray dogs being shooed off someone's lawn for doing something awful. We got up and went outside.  About another five minutes after that, the same waitress came outside to apologise, saying that she didn't realise we hadn't finished our drinks yet, which was ridiculous, as she had said explicitly that we would have to finish our drinks out of the restaurant. My boyfriend politely reminded her of what she said and she quickly reneged, saying she needed the table for tomorrow's service. We found her demeanour unnecessarily rude and it really soured an otherwise lovely evening.

Had their $45 T-bone steak and chips for lunch today. Seriously chewy, the taste and texture represented poor quality. Value for money wise I recommend the Sentinel on St Georges Terrace, far higher quality for the same money.

Came here for dinner. Beautiful view. Lovely service. Lovely food- accommodating to menu changes. Cocktails amazing. Allowed me to drop helium balloons off for my mums birthday! Lovely restaurant and in entertainment book also.

Went for a function so the menu was set. I chose the mushroom tortellini with truffle and burnt butter sauce. <br/><br/>Now I've eaten here a few times and always thought it was good food and a great place for a couple but this dish blew me away. By far one of the best pasta dishes I've had outside of home. So good we ordered bread to soak up the sauce. Rich, flavorsome and addictive!!
Ilovebeansprouts
Food is pleasant and well-prepared, but nothing extraordinary. You certainly pay more for the waterfront view & ambience than the food. It's one of those places we'll consider going at the end of a busy week/day to relax and chill with some drinks and nibbles, but not so much for the main food.
RaMsaY
Location is nice especially on a nice sunny winters day but i wish i could say the same about the food, the angus burger is the first dish patty tasted like cooked from frozen and overcooked not seasoned tasted bland was not what i expected and the price for it when you compare to places like varsity or the aviary, the fish and chips fish was dry and batter was greasy disapointed with the food i wont be back unless something changes.
Danny G
Food was delicious because it is covered in deep pans of melted butter. So a little greasey.<br/><br/>Service is good, nice outlook and reckon it's worth a visit but be ready to pay for the location.
AJ
The main reason I love this place is it's location, right on the water in East Perth. But the food was also a pleasant surprise today. Between us all we had the pork belly, ragu pasta, tasting board and fish & chips. All great! Thanks for a great lunch experience.
Hanah Penrose
Visiting from Melbourne. Stopped in for drinks overlooking the water. Nice seating and great views. I had a really nice rosé. Staff were friendly. Pricey drinks, so I guess you're paying for the view.
Gabrielle Trenbath
food ok, ginger beer lovely and nice view. This is what we found when we visited the Royal recently. It is not to say that the food was bad but the proprietors thought that they didn’t have to try that hard with the food because their water front location would be enough.<br/><br/>Shame really
Food_Glorious_Food
Hadn't been to the Royal in a couple of years so decided to head there mid week for a casual dinner. Buttermilk chicken and crispy squid starters were nice and tasty and got our hopes up. Mains on the other hand were very ordinary and forgettable. Between the 4 of us we tried the Panko crumbed chicken (a glorified schnitzel), the salmon (nothing special at all), roasted cauliflower salad and the risotto. The meals left us a bit deflated and disappointed so we didn't bother with dessert. Service was quite good though, the ambience was ok...and it might sound odd to say this but the interior of the restaurant was so dark we could hardly read the menus. A lot of other places in east perth worth eating at than here for the price.

Attention Boss: Went here today and had a nice meal and drink, however one of our dishes the parmi looked like it had been just reheated with a small amount of chips. The staff were unfriendly and showed no emotion apart from one tall brunette girl who was nice and asked how our meal was! I suggest you get some more staff that actually want to work next Easter if you're still open !Which is such a shame because it's in a great location and the food wasn't terrible .I rate this a 2.5/5 stars!! Purely based on the staff Cheers.

I held my husband's 70th birthday party at The Royal last weekend but I will never hold another function there.   The food was good and the bar staff were very friendly but the security people were absolutely rude, unsmiling and just objectionable.  I spent nearly $3000 at this venue, one would expect that their staff could at least speak politely to my guests.  I wasn't aware until last night of just how rude these people had been until I saw some of my other guests last night and found out exactly what had gone on and how one the younger bouncers, a tall, dark haired man had been so rude to my 73 year old brother-in-law.<br/>I will never go to this place again, and I doubt that any of my 50 guests will either.

Not a great experience at all. Booked for my daughter's 21st celebration dinner ages ago and told them I wanted the evening to be perfect for from it. The entrees took ages to come out and then they forgot my husband's which then took ages to come out. The food was very average but my daughter's dinner which was pork belly was soggy, she sent it back waited ages then it came out again, clearly the same meal heated up twice as soggy and inedible. We then waited and waited for someone to come and ask about bringing out my daughter's cake which eventually got brought out. I complained to the manager about the issues with the dinner items and the slow and slack service and the whole disappointment of the planned special evening. His response was 'are you asking something for free ?' I'm really upset and disappointed that a planned special mea for my daughter's special day l in a restaurant we had visited many times in the past, let us down so badly.
James Smith
This place used to be good, but for a long time now it has gone down hill. Extremely overpriced food for poor quality. Got the chicken parmi, was dry and only just warm. Staff are rude and even security was worse. The bald guy who I think is head security walks around like he's got a chip on his shoulder and extremely rude to everyone, I've seen him threaten and intimidate girls at the venue.<br/><br/>Will not be returning
Troy
Went for lunch today, bitterly disappointing.<br/> 1 of the meals was nice no complaints the rest were small and bland.<br/>Won't be back in a hurry.<br/>Such a shame as it is a nice place to visit. Service staff are great thou

Do not go here if you don't want to be treated like a second class citizen. Four of us went to go to dinner at the Royal, we arrived on the corner of Royal Street the security guards were watching us get out of the uber and wouldnt allow us in as my husband and friend got out of the uber with a almost empty beer which they put in the bin straight away the security guard said they were Street drinking and we can't get in! We had a table booked for 8pm so they let us in. While we were finding our way in another security guard followed us to ask what we were doing? We explained trying to find the entrance, we went to the bar to be approached by another security guard to say we could only have water till 8pm. I could not believe it and I would understand this if we were drunk or causing a scene but we were not it was 7.30 pm and we were looking forward to a nice dinner. I won't go there again nor will the four of us recommend it to any family or friends very poor management!!!<br/><br/>

Located in a very secluded spot in East Perth on the water, The Royal is a fine place for a couple of beers or a light meal in a rather tranquil setting. <br/><br/>Prices of drinks are more or less on par with Perth standards. Prices of the food is a mixed bag, some items I felt were reasonably priced while others I felt were definitely overpriced. If you are after a full dining experience it may be worthwhile to check out one of the other many available options in the vicinity. <br/><br/>Personally I had the Angus Beef burger for $25 which was reasonably good value .The patty was genuine and better than one would expect for a typical pub/bistro style meal . I could not see or taste any hint of it being frozen or containing any fillers. I also enjoyed the generous amount of bacon and the beetroot relish worked together very well. The bun was a slight let down as it was rather dense and doughy and could have done with a little more toasting. <br/><br/>I would be happy to come back keeping in mind the positives and the limitations. Certainly a good spot for a quiet drink and some casual food away from the busy night-spots of Perth.

With the outdoor seating, the lovely view and the huge range of beers on tap this is a great place for a drink. could easily spend several hours here.

We came here for lunch on a Tuesday for our work Christmas lunch. There was only 8 of us and we decided to order food and drinks at the bar so we didn't have to worry about splitting the bill at the end of our meal. I ordered the snapper which was a special for $40. It was average. Two people ordered the chicken salad special and said it was awful. They had to fish around for the chicken bits. But having been here infrequently over the years (usually for work lunches as I used to work up the road), The Royal has never been known for its great food. But it's a lovely place to sit alfresco on a gorgeous summers day and look out at the river and enjoy the sunshine. Which must be what most people think as the place is always busy. Maybe in future I will remember just to go for drinks and enjoy the view. And maybe with a few little nibbles thrown in. But I doubt I will be back anytime soon.

So I'm here on my own for business. It's late afternoon so after a beautiful walk along the river in my favourite place to stay in Perth. I call into the Royal. I'm staying at the Sebel upstairs. Staff are great and the glass of Vasse Felix Chardonnay is nicely chilled<br/>I decide to treat myself to the spaghetti marinara <br/>Please don't waste your $45<br/>Prawns were yummy. Fish pieces were tiny and soggy. Muscles were ok but one tasted funny. I hope I wake up ok in the morning. Way too much spaghetti and the basil pesto overwhelms all taste. I should have known better <br/>On the plus side the early side of chips were yummy for me on Melbourne time at 5 pm

Took my fiancée here for Lunch the other day.<br/>We ordered the share plates of chorizo, feta and Turkish bread, and some wedges.<br/>Chorizo was small individual sausages that were tough to cut into, and then had massive chunks of fat in them which made it chewy and unappetising (which we did not then eat and left it on our plate) The feta was tasty, although only a little of it. Three cubes of 2cm squared in the dish. There was stacks of Turkish bread with it.... I expected better for the price!... And better from The Royal!<br/>The wedges were tasty although overcooked.<br/><br/>Sadly won't be returning in a hurry.

Really gorgeous location, good parking options, spacious restaurant with an upbeat vibe. Seems popular with large groups and staff handle the volume quite efficiently. Love all our meals and cocktails.
PerthfectBreakfast
Hit and Miss.... I work down the road so we have alot of work lunches here. Leisurely lunch, might I add because the service is usually slow. Prices are on the exxy side, you're paying for the location. The food here is decent but not necessarily worth the price tag. <br/><br/>There was one time we came for dinner and we waited 1 hour and 45 minutes for our mains and our booking was an 8pm  booking and we didn't even get our orders taken until 8:30pm and our food came out after 10pm. We did get a round of free drinks though.<br/><br/>It's a nice place to chill and have a few bevvies and just have bar snacks but if I was going to pay that kind of money,  I'd definitely go elsewhere.

Great place to chill on a weekend . Loads of staff, service was very good and wait time was excellent . We shared a tasting plate and really enjoyed it..

I come here often because I love the view, the location and the spaghetti marinara (cream sauce). Unfortunately, the service is never fantastic, and the menu NEVER seems to change. It needs an update so badly. Also, my favourite dish (the marinara), is only available in the cream sauce at lunch time... I don't know why its unavailable at dinner time.

Had the soft-shell crab salad during a team lunch, for the price I paid it wasn't much at all. It was tasty but I was still left hungry. It was a nice day to sit outside so I drank a couple of pints to ease the hunger. Nice place for a drink and a conversation, I wouldn't come here to eat.
Anna Nguyen
This restaurant is good for lunch by the river. Food is okay nothing special. Customer service isn't so great, they require the customers to pay first or give them their bank cards before ordering food which can be considered quite rude and make the customers feel very uncomfortable.

The only good thing about this place is that it is a big venue and the views are great. The food was terrrrribleeeee and too expensive for what it is. The portions are quite big but there's no point serving large portions of tasteless and overcooked food. I went with a small group of friends we each got something different from the steak, pasta, salmon to the tasting plate they were all overcooked and there was barely any seasoning. Do not recommend for anyone.

Such a beautiful location but I can't say I'm a big fan of the food/menu here. It's quite expensive (paying for the location I guess) and I certainly wouldn't pay the lunch prices. Have been three times and although I love the pay at the counter option which is great for split billing/larger groups, the queues can take a while and perhaps more needs to be done to get them moving when they start clogging up. One of the times I went my friend and I brought our dogs, not sure if they are still doggy friendly but hopefully! Even though their outdoor area is enclosed. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back but wouldn't outright refuse if invited!

I dined here last night with 2 girl friends that I haven't had a good catch up with for a long time. The views were amazing! We sat outside and it was a beautiful warm<br/>Night. <br/>The staff were friendly and very helpful. <br/>We shared garlic bread to start. Not bad but was a flat bread style. I much prefer a chunkier garlic bread. <br/>I had the Thai prawn salad as a main. This was quite tasty although a few more prawns wouldn't of gone astray. There was just a tad too much spinach and rocket and not enough of the star of the dish, chilli & garlic prawns. <br/>I didn't have dessert but one of my friends had the Choc brownie and said it was amazing. <br/>All in all a nice night. I wasn't blown away but I wasn't unhappy either.

Great service, nice location and good food. Pricey though for what it is. You can't really fault the restaurant menu or service, it's a notch above the rest. $48 for a piece of fish and some veggies is a bit rich though even by Perth standards.

Beautiful location looking over the Swan River!<br/><br/> The service was of a much higher standard than expected for Perth and considering the very reasonably priced meals I would of not have expected that kind of attentive service.<br/><br/>The wine list is extensive and once again reasonably priced for Perth! Heaps of different beers that the hubby liked......that I had never heard off!!<br/><br/>Big hearty meals as well as light healthy options to pick at for myself <br/><br/>Very Impressive!!!

I took a visiting Melbourne friend here for a mid-week lunch. Although it's hard for Perth to compete with the Melbourne food scene, my friend was impressed with the tranquil, leafy East Perth Cove and we enjoyed sitting outside the Royal Bar for a few hours, sinking a few ales.<br/><br/>The location is really everything in this neck of the woods, and occasionally you can spot a few dolphins frolicking about. On a summer evening or afternoon when it's not too hot, it's a fab spot to sit outside and appreciate the beautiful Perth weather and lifestyle.<br/><br/>I enjoyed my dish of chicken skewers with flatbread, and at $22 I felt this was reasonably priced. My friend also enjoyed his dish of spaghetti marinara. We had a few draught beers and finished off with coffees, which were surprisingly good. I say surprising because my expectation for good coffee in hotels is generally fairly low. <br/><br/>Our waitress was brilliant really; friendly, efficient and seemed to love her job. It always enhances the experience when wait staff are pleasant and helpful.<br/><br/>Overall this was a pleasant experience. The food and beer were fine, the prices reasonable and the venue wonderful.  I don't however find the inside seating very appealing, so I probably wouldn't bother going unless I could get outside seating.

If you come here for a beautiful view and romantic kind atmosphere, there's no room for complaints... Staff were attentive and energized, just the food seemed to be overpriced, my sirloin steak with olives and red wine jus which tasted very salty... Steak itself though was made medium rare, however you could taste full of nerves that kinda chewy... Won't be back for food
Hungry Minion
The venue and view here is incredible. The service was also fantastic. They were super busy so I guess that's why the food took a while to come out. The food on the other hand... A little disappointing. The mussels were the right amount of Chilli but found small pieces of the mussel shell in the saucepan mussels. Was very off-putting. <br/>The soft shell crab was a little soggy for my liking. I prefer a crunchy crab and also lacked dressing. The prawn salad was a winner.

I seem to have started the pre-christmas celebrations very early this year but if the man in the Santa suit at the table next to us was anything to go by, I don't think I 'm alone. There were many large groups celebrating and with such a pretty setting on the waterfront in East Perth, it's not hard to see why the place is popular.<br/><br/>The place is not setting the culinary scene in Perth on fire, but the shared plates on the table hit the spot and despite the crowds the service was consistently good - unobtrusive, prompt and accommodating.<br/><br/>And any pub that sells a beer called Mountain Goat Fancy Pants just has to be good.

Great place for drinks. The atmosphere is friendly yet sophisticated. View of the lake makes it worth it. Food is good, it's worth the price tag. Salmon and risotto were flavourful.

So thankful to have this restaurant in my neighborhood. The menu changes seasonally and keeps things interesting. I love their pasta and the beer battered cod n chips! The seared kangaroo as an entree is very refreshing too.

Last year on Melbourne Cup day I was reduced to driving Lady FWO to and from an event in South Perth and as I reported at the time “on the way home and for several hours afterwards –until she retired for the night – I was entertained by an, at times, garbled account of the day’s activities. Interspersed among the tales, tall and true, I was repeatedly assured “I only had 4 drinks”. Any evidence to the contrary was to be sheeted home to the intoxicating effect of the heady atmosphere.”

Beautiful view and relaxed atmosphere for Saturday lunch. Hubby ordered a steak who rated it average and nothing special. I ordered the prawn asian salad which too was average but provided heaps of kick and flavour from the dressing. Overall a chilled and pleasant lunch.

We had lunch for my birthday at The Royal on a quiet Monday. We had a table of 14 people and requested we be seated on one table as there is sufficient room for the Royal to cater to this. We firstly arrived and waited at the front desk outside for someone to seat us, there were numerous waiters walking around and two waiters pouring water on one table beside us? Surely one waiter can see to us and have us seated at our table? <br/>We then got to our table to see a very decent gap between the tables so really there were a table of 7 and then a table of 8 next to it. I asked to please join the table together so I could sit next to my husband but the waitress informed us that "the chefs don't like the tables pushed all the way together as they cannot cater to a docket having 14 orders on it!?... I have worked in hospitality for 8 years having managed 2 restaurants. I had to laugh at this response as what difference does it make if the tables are together or not? You have to order at the bar anyway so obviously dockets will go through at different times?.. If a kitchen cannot cater to tables that large, why book them?<br/>Last but not least the staff were exceptionally rude!<br/>The waitress out through the order incorrect on the till and my husband came back to the table to see the docket explained she put through the wrong order so he wanted her to know. She started to argue the fact he did in fact order what she put through...! BIG NO NO! Never argue with the customer, even though he's sometimes they can be wrong. In this case my husband was right and she was wrong!<br/>All in all everyone in our party each individually came back to the table complaining of how rude the waiters were! Surely 14 people can't all be wrong.<br/>Food was lovely but service was embarrassing! I think some new management needs to whip it all back into shape!<br/>

This seems like a great venue. The location is lovely on the water and the high wooden tables are really nice. I really enjoyed sitting in the alfresco area. Unfortunately the alfresco area closes at 11pm on a Saturday night. Good service at the bar. We got there when it was already dark but I feel like this would be a brilliant venue on a sunny afternoon.
Hangry Hippo
This is one of my regulars with the girls and they have mastered consistency in all areas..food, drinks and service…The only downside would have to be the funky beer rot smell coming from the bar in the private drinking area..
Michelle
Great food and excellent service! The salmon was lovely and the desserts were massive (maybe better to share)! Attentive waitress. Only bummer can be the parking!

We've always avoided The Royal because of the poor reviews but recent reviews indicated it had changed for the better so we decided to try it. Glad we did. The location is fantastic looking out over the water. The service was very good. Attentive but not intrusive. They've got an extensive drinks list, with a great selection of beers on tap and bottled, and a good wine list. There aren't many places that serve Leeuwin Estate Art Series wines by the glass but they do here. My wife had Soft Shell Crab with Crunchy Noodle Salad, Asian Dressing and French Lime - lovely and crispy, good flavours and texture. I had Grilled Angus Burger with Bacon, Cheddar Cheese, Balsamic Beetroot Relish, Lettuce, Aioli, Sesame Bun and Fries - the fries were a bit dry but the burger was excellent, the beef was succulent and tasty. It's a great place to sit and while away a couple of hours and perfect to meet friends for a quiet drink.

Epic fail. I've eaten here a lot and one of my favourite dishes is the macadamia crusted barramundi on a pumpkin and pea risotto - until today. Think of slop that tasted of cooked white rice in a cream sauce - no stock in sight - with hard cubes of pumpkin and a scatter of frozen peas. If that wasn't bad enough the "crust" on the barramundi was only fried panko crumbs - not a hint of macadamias. It looked awful and tasted so bland. If you want to approximate your meals be a bit more vague in the description - don't just throw something together that has some of the main ingredients because you are busy - where is the pride in the kitchen?? So very disappointed - and no - reducing the bill by the cost of a $10 glass of wine (after my second explanation of why I wasn't happy at the till) for a horrible meal you charged me over $30 for was not a save.  PS I ate the fish - it was bearable and I was hungry - and I left most of the "risotto" - I don't clean my plate then complain!
Comment Mike
Great location. Well trained staff and a kitchen that will rarely let you down Being part of CLG I guess gives them access to quality wines and excellent kitchen produce. Sound like an advert, probably but it's what I think. I've been here probably half a dozen times in the last year. Mainly for lunch and I have always enjoyed it. Father's Day my sone and I took a motor bike ride and finished there for lunch. A simple beer and pizza. We had a slab and could barely make it thru but we managed ... Yum.

i recently dined at the royal on the waterfront and being my first time there <br/>Service 5<br/>Atmosphere 10<br/>Food 7 <br/> I tried a bit of every dish so follows these thoughts <br/><br/>the pasta was nice , little light on the seasoning <br/>the risotto was still hard .,. still good flavour <br/>the steak was cooked perfectly . my guess it was sous vide ?? <br/>chicken cooked beautifully .. sauce was beautiful really nice flavour<br/>sides were nice - served hot<br/> .    <br/><br/>each dish presented  showed love and passion for food.. <br/>i ill be back and i recommend everyone to try this place out it is nice and the food was amazing overall ...

Sorry to say The Royal was really disappointing. Lovely location, average food and unhappy looking staff( I don't think I saw one smile) Such a shame in a prime location.<br/>

Enjoyed the restaurant, food was good. Ordered a few oysters to share, these were nice. Food was good but not standout, your usual Modern Australian style meals. The atmosphere here is very nice especially sitting outside, perfect for a date and being able to walk the waterfront right after.

A decent amount of gluten free options at this place. They even have a gluten free dessert which is not on the menu; standard orange and almond cake which they can provide. Food here has always been pretty standard and good feed but not something too much to shout about.
Russ
The food seemed lovely, the staff do like to ask "How's your meal?" right in the middle of conversations. Dessert was great as well. I would go back. it was quiet and had a great view.

Terrible service. I don't think I have ever been treated so badly ever while eating out ever... Can't be seated at first 5 table cause they were "reserved" but an hour and a half later still no one there, after we ordered we were told there was s 15% surcharge on public holidays, then was asked to hand over credit card so we don't run off... Was charged for a bottle of wine that we never got aswell as 2 glasses which we did. And waited an hour for 2 mains when there was only 4 tables in occupancy total... Never again!!!!
Alicia
This may be a good place if you're just there for a drink. Was there for lunch and booked table in advanced. Specifically asked for a good spot for babies and prams but was given the most sunniest spot. Seriously? Babies and uv rays? When asked for a change the lady said its all booked. Well it wasn't coz I was there for 3 hours to see it. Waitstaff was nice but if only u can grab their attention to take order.

Beaut location and facilities. Not all that impressed by the food though after my first visit to the Royal. I'm wary of forming an opinion based on just one menu item, but felt so ripped off at the time that I am compelled to write a review. I had the wagyu burger which comes in at $26. That's a hefty price for a burger no matter what the location, so I was expecting it to be really. good. And when it arrived, it was just so average!! A tasty burger, sure, but for $26 such a disappointment. And the accompanying chips were also ordinary, like you'd get anywhere. It's no longer boom town guys, you can't charge that for a burger unless it really is worth it. There was nothing about this menu item that justified it's price to me. I'd have been alright paying around $18, but $26 - no way. <br/><br/>The menu looks good and I will probably give it another go, esp. based on what others are saying about the food. This menu item should be reviewed though if you ask me.

Fantastic!!!. Had a wonderful lunch on a Sunday. Food was great and they are dog friendly!!! Were quick to offer the dog some water.<br/>Great service

Huge improvement!. We stopped going to this restaurant a couple of years ago because of the poor service and lack of value-for-money due to over pricing. Went for dinner the other night. How things have changed!!!! The wait staff were knowledgeable about the food, could explain it well and new the origin of the proteins. They were attentive without being intrusive and Nat in particular went to great lenghts to accommodate dietary requirements. The food was OUTSTANDING! Potions were spot on and price appropriate. The dishes were hot and obviously had not dried out siting in a bain marie. Well done to The Royal. We will be back.

Very Good. We went for lunch, very extensive menu, with great choice. Food was excellent and so was the service.

We decided on a glass of rosé – what better drink to have while gazing out over the water on a warm autumn evening? – and picked Rockcliffe Quarram Rocks 2014 rosé from the Great Southern. While sipping we decided a small snack wouldn’t go astray so ordered a serve of flat bread seasoned with rosemary and ancho chilli with Danish feta.

I went to The Royal for my bridal shower and they were so accommodating and helpful with helping organise the event. The food was well priced and everything tasted amazing! I can't wait to go again! Love this place :)

They make no sense. Went to Royal on night of weekend. Went to order food but told to go to another bar area. Went to another bar area and told to go to another bar area. I got confused. Staff raise their voice at me when I no understand them when make food order. They made me feel sad. Food came and was not nice. Under the top of plate was dirty. I told staff but was same lady that raise voice at me and made me feed sad again. She no care about my lunching. <br/><br/>There is no thing royal about the royal. Somewhat expensive for what you get. This is one of our locals that we've been to quite a bit over the years...the pizza is to die for here too btw....but when I was charged $13.50 for a pint of peroni and my friend paid $19 for an entree sized calamari that seriously had like 10 smallish pieces, I thought to myself, you're having a lend of me!....( I've had a bigger portion served up as a Tapas at the new Toledo Lounge in Vic Park for just over half of that price!)...well I guess one is paying for the view here! That's getting a bit rich though fellas.....don't you think!

Great food and great service. Been here the last few nights and have had delightful dinners each time. Tasting plate is a favorite as well as the marinara.

Breakfast with a view. My partner and I came here last Saturday morning for breakfast, while it looks "pricey" we found it to be cheaper than other options in the area. <br/><br/>The best part of it was the range of gluten free foods on their menu. They didn't have a breakfast menu out the front at the time but we decided to go in because we thought they would have the same on their menu inside. <br/><br/>Unfortunately nothing was marked as gluten free (partner is coeliac), however, the waiter was so helpful and nice. He went and checked what was gluten free and came back to tell us that we could have anything on the menu and they would leave out the bread. He then offered extra of another item (i.e. mushrooms or bacon). This doesn't happen very often (pretty much never) so this was a really nice gesture. <br/><br/>Impeccable service and a view to match! Even after we'd finished eating they bought out a new bottle of water for us. It was such a relaxed atmosphere and we felt in no way we had to leave any time soon after eating.

Sunday breaky. Over priced. paid 17 dollars for eggs and avocado and pretty much just got eggs on toast. service good but overall not a great experience.

Went for breakfast, over priced, food portions were very average. Eggs and avocado came with no more then a teaspoon of avocado. Service was great

Fantastic Dining Experience. As a local, I could not be happier with my local Bar/Restaurant! My partner and I have eaten here many nights and have always been extremely happy with our food! The crab salad is my favourite entrée and the Spaghetti Marinara is both our dish of choice! Staff are always very attentive, polite and friendly! Even on busy nights, when admittedly we can wait between 45 mins for food, the staff always inform us on the wait before ordering!<br/>The bar has a great ambience and the bar staff are always ready and willing to tell us about special beers of the month! Love coming for a quiet drink or a girls night out down at the Royal! Great job to everyone there, I am a big fan... keep up the good work!
Meg
We go to The Royal a lot and most times we get a pizza to share. The pizzas there are great! Especially their special of the day - which more often than not is some sort of chorizo, corn, onion specialty. Yesterday though, we had their weirdest most disappointing pizza ever! In fairness to them, it sounded gross on the menu and we still ordered it.. But we were living in hope that they made something amazing of it. Not so much. The pizza had broccolini on it with ham and those gross sliced olives from a jar. I don't know what happened here but I wouldn't order it or recommend it to anyone.
Carl
Nice view while you wait and wait and wait. I've been waiting for over an hour and a half after I ordered. Being busy on a Saturday is no excuse. Hire more staff.

Dinner for 22 - Christmas Party. Myself and 23 others attended on Saturday 20/12/14 this was our venue for our Christmas Dinner. We had the set menu with a choice of 3 Entres, 4 Mains and 2 Desserts. The location was lovely, great atmosphere, we couldn't fault the service our waitress Amanda was attentive and very informative at all times. Our food was served all together which was great as we had 2 tables the food was really excellent. The wine selection was immense. Would definitely go back and recommend to others.

We booked a table for 4 for a pre Christmas lunch. The table provided was very small which made it difficult to navigate the various dishes we ordered. <br/>A couple of us ordered the pork belly starter which was lovely and served with plump scallops which were also really nice. I ordered the rump and mash for a main. The steak was a but more rare than I would like but had tested for so long that there wasn't any moisture in it. The main was also fairly dry and not what I would expect from a quality restaurant. <br/>In summary a great location with average food.
James Stevenson
Great location but won't be back.. The view and location of the Royal is excellent. We went there for a friends birthday but the atmosphere of the venue was ruined by rude, uninterested staff and extremely average food. <br/><br/>Going to the bar, the staff that served us were snippy and seemed really uninterested. Everyone in our group commented on the poor service from one particular staff member. It seemed like serving us a drink was a major inconvenience for her. Don't worry, you won't have to serve us again ;)<br/><br/>The burger I ordered was served promptly, but was dry and uninspired. My friend only ate half of the risotto he ordered. <br/><br/>The customers at The Royal were all well dressed and very easy going, enjoying their Saturday, and the venue is great. It's a shame that a place with such potential is ruined by the bar staff and quality of food.
Esther Walker
Nice spot on the Waterfront but...... Didn't eat here as reviews were't great but had a couple of pre-dinner drinks.... Gin & Tonic was disgusting... Had a sip and thought it was soda water! Plus no lemon. Simply the worst G & T I've ever had. And $12 for a Matsos Ginger Beer... Really? I just paid $60 for a carton of 24.... Do the Math. RIP OFF.
Spanner73
Not impressed!. From a table of 6 people sitting in the restaurant there was nothing on the menu that took my fancy. I asked if i could order the waygu burger from the bar menu. I was told categorically no this was not allowed (even when prepared in the same kitchen) and therefore had to sit at the table and wait the 40 minutes until my friends received and ate their meals before I could leave and get something to eat elsewhere. Very poor service and will not encourage me to return or tell others to go there.
Michael
Went there for dinner tonight with wife and friend. Extremely busy and a long wait for food but fortunately worth the wait. Food was great and generous servings. Service was exceptional and a special thank you to our waitress, Amanda who did an excellent job to make sure that everything went well.

Lovely food, lovely view, lovely waiter. I have some food intolerances and was very grateful when the waiter took time to listen to my needs, and the chefs adjusted their recipe to suit me.<br/>My partner ordered the wagyu burger with bacon and it was exactly as a perfect burger should be- juicy with the perfect balance of salad and sauce.<br/>I had the mushroom and truffle oil risotto (gf) and they made it dairy free for me as well. Despite having no butter or parmesan the risotto was bursting with flavour without being salty, and they definitely didn't skimp on the truffle oil.<br/>The food came out promptly and the waiter was very friendly and cheerful.<br/>We had a wonderful experience and even though it is on the pricier side, the food and the view is all worth it.

No madam that grated beet root is meant to be in your port. Food ok, serves not generous but sufficient, service - what service? You will be impressed with the staff's ability to ignore your frantic gestures for attention.
Cutest_thing17
Terrible Service. Went in with a younger group on a casual Sunday afternoon, first our IDs are checked at the door which is fine, then we get to the bar IDs checked again, then we sit down at a table to get food, IDs checked again... bit of a joke, terrible communication system at this place. Then when we finally get seated and no longer harassed, we are constantly harassed for extra things and we could barely relax and enjoy our meal. Honestly, felt singled out because we were of younger appearance and there was a large age discrimination. They need to relax a little and just let there customers relaxed.
Ksymonds13
Poor service. When trying to order food in a restaurant it shouldn't take speaking to 5 separate people and after that task only achieving the result of finding out where we can and can not sit! Not only that but the barely competent Irish waitress (who on a side note should put as much effort into her job as applying her bright red lipstick and she might succeed in life) who I gave my order to originally and tried to pay her with cash proceeded to come over and ask how we would like to pay and did we need to look at menus. If my friend hadn't wanted to eat here I would've walked out. It took sitting for over 15 mins and flagging someone down to get water, basic restaurant 101. Seeing as this is my local it's a shame I won't be visiting again.

Come for dinner on a Sunday night and was lovely! Service was great, food amazing! I had the salmon and was cooked perfectly! Will be back

Eating Out
Great. Have been here on numerous occasions for Friday lunches and even attended a 21st birthday function. Every time I have visited the food has been great. Went for Friday lunch and ordered the duck salad. It was really, really good. Asked for no onion and no problems catered for my needs. Lots of duck, feta and tomatoes. Would have complained otherwise. Have had different pizzas which are always so good and at the 21st birthday function there was a choice of food and it was also very good, so I am a bit confused by most of the other reviews. Probably one gripe and that would be that the waiter tried and take our wine glasses away a little too soon. We were still finishing our wine and you could actually see there was wine still in our glass.

The Royal is a nice pub - go there for a drink but don't order the food! I've been here many times as its close to the office. The food is always underwhelming and takes ages to arrive. And if you are going to eat here, never ever order the chicken Caesar salad!
Blonde
Love it time and again. I love this pub on the waterfront.<br/>I always take visitors to Perth. It's got a great menu and the barramundi and the fish n chips are both standouts. The Italian coleslaw served with the fish is excellent. It has a great selection of beers as well as a reasonable wine list. When it has gold band snapper it is also cooked perfectly. The view of the water is great and the lovely walk up to the ABC is great too.
Yoda
BAD. Went here with a group. Waitstaff were very rude and unaccommodating. Made it seem like things was such an inconvenience for small things like extra water or to set an extra place setting. When people were running late staff were extremely rudely reminding us the kitchen closed in half an hour.<br/>When food did arrive it was sub-par -- under cooked crunchy rice and carrots. <br/>Would not go here again.

Mrs. I had the "Warm Duck Salad". First off all it was cold and the photo speaks for itself. Barely any Duck, NO Feta, 3 halves rosa tomatoes. I am a small eater and was still hungry afterwards. I am really disappointed!
Heshe93
Lovely view, good food but much to be expected from the front of house. He: Great spot for lunch and it is a plus that the food is good. A main plus beer will set you back about $35-$40. Okay for Perth price.<br/><br/>She: Love coming here for lunch and brunches. The crowd here are always nice ... no loud mouthy ones here. :) Love the great selection of mains and vino. Only thing is the Royal has just changed its menu. Still prefer the older one but then again, food is still good. Only complain here is the service - inconsistent. Almost like good hair days and bad hair days! :p<br/><br/>Rate: 7/10

Waterfront. Nothing much but the waterfront.

Disgusting. No customer service here at all! Expensive and not worth the one hour wait for a piece of banana bread... Mouthy waitress should find a more suitable occupation.

The Royal is such a great venue with decent food, a little on the pricey side for what you get. Is going down hill, service is bad, meal wait times are 1hr plus on a sat lunch, I would hate to think how dinner is! Had to go to the bar to order food and drinks, no table service! Food was good, but not very good value for money!
Huttonashkenny
I wouldn't recommend eating here. Although our food quality was good the service was terrible. Took half an hour for them to bring out a plate of cheese! When I went to ask where it was the bar woman rolled her eyes at me and ignored me... Not a happy customer!
SPOONJUICE
Enbjoyable place but.... I love the Royal. It is close to my work so I like to head there for lunch or after work drinks at least once a week. The pitchers, sangria and carafes are delicious. My only complaint will be one of the waitresses/floor staff working there, as she always seems to have issues about being there and doing her job. My group requested to sit inside much to the dismay of this lady, as she tried to tell us there were no tables available, despite several vacant unreserved ones there. She then FINALLY decided it was ok for us to sit inside, like it was the most difficult decision ever. On another occasion we just wanted small servings of food (entrees and sides) and a pitcher to share. She said that we can't have what we wanted in the restaurant, despite it all being ordered off the restaurant menu... Not impressed, we were made to feel as if we weren't wanted there.

Five Spiced Crispy Squid, Citrus Sweet Chilli. Love the dish. but not worth the wait
Tali
Average for the price. Bar menu: For the price you pay, the food is quite bland and serving size is small. I had the steak sandwich for $24 and it was tasteless, meat overcooked and chips hardly had any salt. I have seen many of my friends have the pork belly with scallops and it never has crispy skin ($22). Once we ordered Oysters Kilpatrick ($54 for a dozen) - they were so drenched in BBQ sauce that you can taste nothing else.<br/><br/>The major problem is inconsistency, I have had a few good meals here on occasion but more often than not they have been completely average. If you are wondering why I still come here, its because I work nearby and it is a lovely venue. It is a real pity that the food doesn't match.
P.mansfield
Great view ordinary food. I ordered a sirloin with garlic mash. My partner had the crispy skin barramundi. The steak had a burnt after taste and the cut was a not up to an asking price of $42. It was served on a cold plate so the overly salted potatoes and steak were not that attractive in about 3 minutes. The chick pea and bean salad may not have originated from a tin but the taste certainly was. The fish was extremely hot (microwaved?) while everything else was varying degrees of tepid. Wine by the glass potentially smallest serving I have seen delivered with a straight face. The service was acceptable but our displeasure was met with a youthful avoidant stare at the floor. Very dissapointed.
Juliesouthon
Would have had a nicer meal at Sizzler!. Nice waitress but extremely slow drinks service...about 40 mins before they served drinks after you ordered. Very noisy place. WAY overpriced for the bland food all 12 of us received. The steaks were on par with a home cooks, not nice big thick steaks like you'd expect from a restaurant... about 1cm thick and tasting ordinary. My Spaghetti Marinara was too much tasteless spaghetti with a few bits of seafood in it and only 2 bits of tiny chilli pieces. The soggy S&P squid with the lady next to me was left barely eaten and the salads were floating in the dressings which should have been on the side. I will never go there again and wouldn't recommend it to others either.

Lovely dinner in beautiful surrounds. Had dinner on a Saturday. Nice surroundings, lovely service and good food. The seafood pasta was fresh and full of flavour. The salmon-wrapped scallop was petite and tasty though not as exciting as the pasta. Highlight for me was the Malteser Log - yum !

Cold food and poor value. I attended a large group function at Royal on the Waterfront. Nice location, courteous staff but overall not worth the prices. Most disappointing was having to get up from the table to find someone to take our order. The entree was delivered quickly but the main dish came very late and was cold. The red snapper (barely lukewarm) had a nice taste but its accompanying potatoes were cold and not fully cooked. At $37 it should at the very least be warm. Were there not enough warming lights in the kitchen to handle large groups? We will choose another venue for our next event...with better service and value.

Sarah Jessica Parker this place is bad bad and more bad. service is pedestrian food is generic. we waited 2 hrs for mains, no apology no explication

Not That Great. Good views of the East Perth lake but the service isn't fantastic on a busy weekend or occasion such as Mother's Day. The food is reasonably priced but was cooked in a hurry so my risotto was grainy not smooth and neither was the mash potato that accompanied the sirloin steak that hubby had. My sangria was terrible, did not taste nice compared to other places that I have had my favourite cocktail. Would only go there once a year.

Appalling Treatment. My partner and I come here often for a few drinks, the food and the atmosphere. However, last Wednesday when we came for dinner, we were treated disgustingly by three of the waitresses. They spoke down to us the entire night and were extremely rude. Even though we spent $180 on our meal (steaks and wine) in the restaurant, the older Indian-looking lady had motioned for us to sit in the bar to eat "burgers and pizzas" which would be "more suitable and a bit more simple for us". Our beverages were never put onto our order and we had to ask three times until a kind man who was not our waiter took our drink order a fourth time and delivered it to us himself. Very poor service from the waitresses. Have never been so insulted.

I have found the best spaghetti marinara pasta in Perth , superb
Courtney Louise Goodwin
Not the best food selection, very small portions and overly priced. Friendly staff which made it a bit better experience

Second visit was better. Caught up with a couple of mates for lunch here on Saturday 12th April and we all enjoyed what we had /- steak, pasta and two burgers. I had the burger and it was excellent, nice fresh bun and a delicious relish, served with a side of well cooked potato chips.<br/><br/>This was our second visit to this venue and an improvement on the first.

Going down hill fast!. I am a regular visitor to the Royal as the view and location are superb and the menu wide ranging. For the past 3 visits I have been really disappointed at the time to serve a meal. The original of these 3 past visits resulted in an hr wait for a meal, the 2 subsequent visits resulted in us being told that the service was "1 and a half hours wait". Totally unacceptable in a city such as Perth. The food is good but not worth waiting nearly 2 hours for it. Won't be back for a very long time.

Spectacular view. Average Food and service. Nice menu - presented well just the quality lacks especially for the price. Worth a visit for a drink at sunset.

We went for dinner last night and it was yummy! Staff were cool, food was tasty!! So happy to see they had Stone & Wood on tap. Marinara pan was to die for, only criticism is that it's too big!! Perhaps I shouldn't have had the scallops to start? <br/><br/>Keep it up folks!!

World Class. The greatest compliment a restaurant can receive is to be recommended to friends and guests and as owners of boutique accommodation we do not hesitate to advise our guests to eat here. The feed back we get from our well travelled Business and tourists visitors is that they rate it up there with any world class venue both for food and the ambience. My husband I congratulate Dave and his caring staff for the service of the fine food and wine which compliments the experience. My only criticism is that the beautiful goat risotto has been removed from the menu.

Forget about it.... Poor service, very average food and over priced. There are so many other good pubs serving good food a lot cheaper... Don't bother!

Great spot. Had dinner at the royal on Friday night. We tried our luck without making a booking and the placed seemed fairly busy but a lovely host found us a table outside for our group of 5. Our waitress was very welcoming and very helpful with suggesting wines and recommending meals on the menu. When ordering we were told there was a 45 minute wait on food. We did not need to wait that long but did not mind either way as we did not book and the restaurant was basically full. All our meals were presented well and came out at the same time. Everyone enjoyed their meals though the marinara pan was a stand out dish. The scenery can not be faulted but would suggest making a booking to get a table outside with that beautiful view. Service was great throughout and food was good. Will definitely be returning.

Wow this place what happened...My dad, brother in law and myself went to this place for a drink and a meal before going to the glory game...service poor staff well average at best.. Sad as I told the boys it was a good pub...We left felt sorry for dad as he was looking forward to it...never again...should have gone to the Brisbane...

Bad bad food and service. This is one of the bad places for both food and service. I went to The Royals last night and there wasn't anyone attending to us even though it was very quiet and there wasn't even a line for a wait. The manager did not look interested and the service was bad overall. The food. What can I say about the food? It was bland and lacked seasoning and I had just ordered a pasta! <br/>The view is just amazing but very very disappointing experience.

Worst breakfast I have ever had in Perth. would not recommend The Royal to anyone. Save your money and eat better food at home, or try one of the better places next door. <br/>Plain and tasteless food. My eggs were on top of spinach which I would taste and feel sand when eating. <br/>never will go here ever again
Rebecca
We stopped in to have some afternoon tea in between a wedding and reception and where told we couldn't sit in the aircon due to not having a meal...I said I wasn't letting my mother in law sit outside in the heat and she wouldn't be too comfortable on the bar stools either and there were plenty of tables and chairs available inside.....and we had an international guest with us.....after getting a table where I demanded one the looks from the staff was unbelievable .....poor at best

Our party of six had breakfast here this morning. <br/>What a disappointment! The location is fabulous. But the food and service are anything but. It took ages standing in line to have our order taken and then our coffees and one breakfast were lukewarm. The food when it arrived was a little lack lustre. <br/>We won't be going back!!

Where do I start?? Not only was I recommended a non spicy pizza and it came out with obvious chilli on it but the manager then had to go through the process of who recommended it, why, what was said & that she would give me another pizza 'on her' funny I had already paid for the original pizza. Let that go...we then go out for a cigarette and get not only verbally attacked but physically attacked while the 'security' were barely 10feet away from us & did nothing. Will not be back.

Haven't had a great meal with great service in a long time. Absolutely delicious and did I mention very good service? Seafood chowder (entree) and Sirloin with chorizo based sauce (main) are an excellent combo.

Dined here today with another couple and it was a huge disappointment.  I haven't been here for a while and have never loved it, I think they tend to coast through with average food and poor service but get away with it because of their location. Today was no different and the service is truly terrible.  Granted, our waitress was ok and initially attentive but the time it took for two burgers, a pizza and serve of squid to come out was approx. 40mins.  When it came time to get the bill, we waited and waited and then finally flagged down the waitress and then we waited some more. <br/><br/>Food - overall average, depending on what you order.  The pizza was nice, thin base, tasty toppings; the squid was ok although I prefer mine crispier.  The burgers, appalling.  The hamburger itself and the salad were fresh but the patty was unpalatable and I had to remove it to eat the remainder of the meal.  It wasn't homemade and had the consistency of a frozen/bought meat, with the look of sausage meat rather than mince meat in the shape of a cardboard circle.  It was only $20 but I'd pay more quality.  <br/><br/>All up for the food and 2 beers, 2 gins and 2 coffees it came to $139.40.  I thought that was reasonable but not for what we ate.  I won't be heading back here any time soon. <br/>__________________________________________________________________________________________<br/><br/>Wouldn't say a Royal visit. Ate here for lunch today with several friends as it's in a central location but I didn't have high hopes after reading the reviews. The Royal turned out to be better than expected but still not great.<br/><br/>Arrived at 11:30am before all the workers arrived and the staff were pleasant and efficient. Ordered drinks and the Turkish bread, chorizo and goats cheese to share. Everything came out quickly and the bread was soft and light and there was a decent amount of chorizo and cheese accompanying it.<br/><br/>Around 12:30pm it got progressively busier so the atmosphere was nice. It is 37 degrees here today and the restaurant was cool and inviting. Lunches consisted of the squid Caesar salad, the wagu burger, the spinach salad and I shared a chicken sandwich with my friend. These came out within a reasonable time.<br/><br/>The chicken sandwich was very bland. The bread was soft and fresh and the chicken breast was tender and moist however the cheese, avocado spread and the limp lettuce leaves didn't add any flavour. It was fine but my friend and I were both happy we had split this meal as it didn't really offer much and it was quite dissatisfying. The general consensus was all the meal were good enough but nothing amazing. The squid in the salad was tender and crisp and the spinach salad was nice as was the beef burger but the chips were overcooked and plain.<br/><br/>I like the interior of the Royal and the location and view are beautiful. I think it is just ok for a meal but if heading out for a drink, that would be my preference and I wouldn't have dinner there. <br/><br/>All up with coffees to end the lunch, the total came to $161. Reasonable.

You know what's great? People who have watched cooking shows like "MKR" and think they know anything about anything. Every time I've visited the royal (or most other restaurants, for that matter), I've managed to remain objectively critical without being a tool. <br/>I'd like to see what a steak sandwich made by a 5 year old would look like. Maybe people should spend less time watching tv and criticising hospitality workers and more time focusing on actual problems. So you noticed your waiter didn't come *immediately* when you wanted him? Your service wasn't great? Maybe you should walk a mile in their shoes (which would take approx 2hrs) before you open your trap or start tapping away on your smart phone. Bottom line; the more miserable you are and unhappy with your company, the more you'll notice any mishaps in service. If you're with people you love and are genuinely happy, nothing else matters. You complain about the service, because that's the only conversation starter you can think of in your boring life. <br/>Anyway! Rant over. Great service, friendly staff. Beatiful setting. Keep it up, Royal.

Found a sliver of plastic in my soft shell crab. Management were slightly apologetic with a small reimburesment.

A Pleasant Surprise. Our family dined here on a Saturday evening and were pleasantly surprised by the attentive and accommodating service. We had made a booking earlier in the day and just before coming had checked the web to see the menu....that's when we saw the most recent (and not favourable) reviews on Urbanspoon. Given that we were due in a half hour we nevertheless decided to give it a go and we are glad that we did. Our two young children have life-threatening multiple food allergies which the waitress (Jackie) and kitchen accommodated so well. My husband and I enjoyed the pasta (the spaghetti marinara pan and the garganelle) and the children loved their burgers and chips (the kitchen altered the ingredients to accommodate their allergies). We couldn't fault the service or the food. Combined with the wonderful view outside, it was a great night out for our family and we wouldn't hesitate to return.

Looooong wait for food. Food is Delicious. A group of us visited the Royal on Saturday night. The service needs to improve. We had to grab a waiter to take our order as there was nobody around when we were clearly ready. We had a 3 course meal and there was a 40-45 minute wait between each order. It isn't good enough in a restaurant with those prices. The food was Delicious I have to say. Excellent in every course for everyone in the group. The service was ok. Our waiter was nice but he just didnt seem to be on the ball with asking if we wanted drinks etc throughout the 3 hours we were there. We had to ask twice for our meals and were informed they were on the way. It's a shame as this place was always a favourite of mine. The scenery is beautiful but it just doesnt make up for the long wait between meals. Going by the other reviews, this is a common occurance.

Thumbs up!. Had a very pleasant lunch yesterday. Agree specials are v. expensive but otherwise v.reasonable. Excellent food. Fantastic service by extremely knowledgeable and pleasant staff. Looking forward to next time!

Food was amazing. Substantial without being too much and extremely tasty (best garlic bread in town!). Good prices for lunch although specials were ridiculously expensive. I can't say much for the service. Not very professional, they all looked like lost puppies. First of all they had our table set wrong so had to add 2 extra seats and settings (not hard to have a table for 6 is it?). Once ordered we waited at least 30 mins just for bread (I'm being kind in saying 30 mins). Then while waiting we had a barman insist we ordered wine not once but twice (I think I would if we ordered wine) when we clearly stated it was the table next to us. If only their service was as good as the food and location this really would be a great place. The service really lets it down.

Disappointed yet again. I went to dinner with friends last night and had a gentleman named Sean serve us. His service and manner towards us all was appalling... Ruined our dining experience completely. I have never come across such rudeness. The table behind us had same waiter and was unhappy also, as we spoke to them in regards to him. Its unfortunate as is a beautiful view and food is good.. Because of the service diners will not return.

Disappointing experience.... I chose The Royal for my wedding celebration as I was told by friends it was a great venue, with a good ambiance. We experienced quite the opposite. They were completely unprofessional - the staff didnt inform me about a new rule regarding outside patrons having to sit whilst drinking at all times (which greatly impacted my function), the security were unprofessional and rude to my guests and in general we received poor service. The view was the only aspect of the venue that was positive as for everything else, incredibly disappointing.
Fablife71
Terrible place - stay away.. The staff are not nice - they are rude. The food overpriced. You have to get someone to take your drink to your table outside, you cannot stand outside with a drink, only sit. What country am I in? I paid $60 for a bottle of average wine.

This is the worst place ever!!!. Do not ever come to this place! I have just got home from being kicked out of The "Royal" for apparently being too inebriated. I had a few glasses of wine but I was completely coherent, not stumbling or bumbling and not doing anything wrong. Here is my story... My friend got married in Bali and invited us to a drinks night here tonight to celebrate. Around two hours in, I sat down with friends and was unexpectedly asked to leave due to my "level of supposed inebriation". I am sorry but I know when someone should be asked to leave an establishment - and tonight was most definitely not the case. In fact every single person I was with (around 20 people) was in absolute disbelief and shock that I was getting kicked out... we asked to talk to management but it was like talking to a robot ... a monkey ... no response other than "security has made their decision". It was hurtful to have to miss out on one of my closest friend's special nights due to a bouncer's misjudgment and lack of ability to communicate and listen. I am a mother of two young children so I do not get that many opportunities to go out with friends. I am extremely disappointed with this place that they could not admit that they were wrong. This type of treatment is simply not acceptable.

Fooled me twice. First visit I got a $24 steak sandwich... would have been disappointed even if I had paid $10. Second visit (I begged to go elsewhere but work had made the booking) I got the mushroom risotto - no taste at all, was pretty much rice in gruel. And service was average - one starter never came, another was served as a main size with the mains and additional drinks were incorrectly on the bill. Don't usually do reviews, but i couldn't help but do a negative one on the royal.. great location, terrible food

Asking for a table at 8.45pm on a Wednesday isn't the ideal time for dinner, however the terrible service that followed was a little unwarranted. We were told to order food by 8.55pm, we were hovered over until this happened. The waitress seemed rather pissed off that we wanted our entree and mains and seperate times, not all at once like she suggested. No mention was given to Jerry the oyster shuckers special, so I ordered only 3... I then changed to 1/2 dozen once I knew he was there. They were great, the highlight of the meal! Our 1st drinks order got lost, I reordered, one of the beers came out in a dirty glass and was subsequently that flat a fork couldn't stir a head. I had to walk the beer up to the drink delivery waiter to exchange as the waitstaff were no where to be found. Our meals were quite nice, scallops and trout pasta... The service in the restaurant was terrible except for the waitress who delivered our meals. We finished well before half the patrons in the restaurant and decided to have a drink on the bar side of the establishment. Paying for the meal the waitress managed to mutter about 3 words the whole time, I really felt we were an inconvenience to her. Fortunately, the barman and the drink delivery waiter were personable, friendly and provided excellent service. Such a shame the waitress in the restaurant ruined the majority of our short evening out. She was definitely having a bad day! We'll be back... I just hope we don't encounter such service or that particular waitress again.

Beautiful spaghetti prawn and rocket dish. Best spaghetti I have had. Service was excellent. Tasting plate entree just delicious. Best mojitos outside of Bali.

Between the 2 of us we enjoyed the starter of chorizo and feta bread with half slab of the satay chicken pizza and a bucket of fries for the main. Would recommend eating in the bar region if you prefer pub-grub type cuisine. Everywhere in Perth is expensive so the price of the bar menu is on par with most other places... The difference is the setting of this place is beautiful looking onto the river.

Easily the worst service I have received in a Perth restaurant. The only way to describe the waitress is rude, argumentative and inattentive. <br/><br/>Meal items ordered were okay, but not amazing. Will definitely not be coming back based on this experience.
Lauren.taylor.86
Loved it!. Came here for dinner last week, food & drinks were fantastic!<br/>We had entrees, mains & cocktails - couldn't fault anything.<br/>Will be back for sure!! :)

Impressive service. Ate at the Royal Saturday lunch time with 14 friends. Fantastic waitress looking after us. Advised us to order as soon as possible to avoid a long wait. Then checked to make sure she had everyone's orders (as we ordered and paid individually). Had the chorizo salad, it was delicious. And the desserts to die for. Really impressed though by the service to table 30. It's not often you get service like that in Perth these days.

When paying $38 for a spaghetti marinara you would expect a pretty good meal..... this was not the case when I recently attended The Royal with a group of friends. The pasta was pre cooked and gluggy, and there was at least a 1/4 cup of olive oil sitting at the bottom of my plate. Seafood must have been running low as there wasn't much to be seen in my meal either.<br/><br/>Waitstaff service was exceptional, though the bar staff was another story. Waited 5 minutes at the bar with 2 other people queing for a drink, watching staff walk by numerous times without acknowledging us. When one of the other people called for service he was told by the bar-man "this isn't my section of the bar".... what a prick!<br/><br/>Much work needed here. Great outdoor area but the inside looks like an old RSL club with outdated carpets and decor<br/><br/>Won't be back in any hurry......
Lindahas78
Not worth the money. I went with a group of 10 people for my birthday dinner, we arrived at 7pm and were served dinner at 9pm. We were all very hungry and meals came out cold. For the cost of the meals the service should have been outstanding, and it was only average. I wont return, and neither will any of the group - Sorry royal you guys need to step it up!

Disappointing. We ate at The Royal last night with a group of 9. Whilst I can say the service was quite good and the entrée were a lovely choice of great seafood and flavours. I was left completely flat after eating a very uninspiring meal of Dhufish. I was expecting for $48 a really nice piece of WA fish, instead I got a over cooked small fillet of fish, with no colour or flavour which looked more stewed than pan fried. The fish was on a smear of sweet potato that was noticeably enhanced by sugar, which made it unpleasantly sweet. On the side was boiled baby potatoes that were half raw. Lastly on the plate was splash of undressed greenery. Everything was tasteless and boring. Very disappointing. My partner ordered the scotch fillet which I must say was just as bland and uninteresting. He said the best thing about his dinner was the mash potato.

Great view, great service. The mushroom risotto was to die for. By far the BEST tasting risotto i've ever eaten however, the rice was undercooked. Service towards the end of the night was slow as the place got busier and we felt quite ignored by the end of the night
Julie
Pleasantly surprised. Been here several times before, good location on the river but always thought the food overpriced & very average. Yes it is still overpriced, as is Perth but tonight had a lovely meal. A good menu, just add crispy belly pork & the choices are complete ! My Granddaughters cheeseburger & chips was so well presented I could have eaten it myself. I had Steak which was more medium than the medium rare which I had asked for but very tasty. Well cooked greens & garlic mash, ( Partisan next door take note ) thoroughly enjoyable. The sticky date with cream & ice cream was heaven, if a few nuts were added it would be perfection
T M
Food ok... service VERY slow (even when not many people there) and VERY expensive for what you get (it's still a pub) charge same price for small-medium size mains as you would find in a michelin star.....
Foodme
Expensive and poor quality. Ordered a crispy squid starter from bar (not restaurant). At $19 was expecting something either very tasty or a decent serving size - if not both. Instead ended up with neither: a miniature portion which tasted like oily rubber. Are you kidding me? I could've whipped up something tastier buying a frozen box of squid from Woolies and doing it myself.
Marie87
We went here for dinner with friends, there was 6 of us. Had booked a table so no waiting.. Food was nice but a bit pricey for what you get but the main problem was the extremely rude staff !!! Out waitress was so rude when talking our orders and explaining the specials was a huge effort for her, made us feel like we were being troublesome . Not a good vibe . Won't be going back which is a shame because the energy is beautiful and the food was enjoyable.

Sunday lunch. Came upon this bar/ restaurant on a lovely Sunday walk along the East Perth riverfront . We shared 3 entrees which were all beautifully cooked ,tasty and well presented . Salt and pepper squid , prawns and pork belly . <br/>Very cold beer and all in all great experience . Despite a very busy day service good .

Disappointing. Could not believe that in this day and age The Royal does not have anything gluten free on their breakfast menu. When I asked what they could do as a gluten free option, the ever helpful waiters reply - 'nothing' . Never again

Keep coming back. Have been here on multiple occasions, for breakfast, lunch and dinner and have always been impressed with the service and quality of the food. Waitstaff are always very attentive and friendly and the view over the water is lovely. Would recommend coming here for a meal any time of the day! The only part I wouldn't recommend is their cakes from the cake fridge - on more than one occasion they tasted old, stale and commercially produced.
Natalie_mccomas
Dinner. We went to the royal for dinner last night and was blown away with the service, as we finished our glass we were asked if we wanted another.<br/><br/>The food was sensational and the staff were amazing <br/><br/>Two thumbs up

Good experience. Myself & my boyfriend booked for Saturday lunch here. We were actually nearly an hour early and they were very friendly & helpful and got us seated straight away. The food was really delicious. We had ordered 1 starter to share but they forgot about it & we only realised this when they brought out the main course. The waitress realised then also and inquired from the kitchen what had happened. We said we would go without the starter at that stage as we had our mains. The waitress was very apologetic and came and told us we could have dessert and/or coffees for free due to their error. We were more than happy with this. Fair enough they made a mistake, but they definitely won us back by giving us dessert & coffees on the house! So we were very happy with the food and the service.

Service was a little bit slow, it took a while before the waiter took our order but when the food came out, we couldn't fault it. We really enjoyed the meals.

Had the lamb ... Nice dish

Quiet midweek lunch with the hubby. The place still had a decent crowd for 1pm on a Wednesday! Spaghetti Marinara for him (all fresh and well cooked) and Salt and pepper squid with ginger and chilli dipping sauce for me. Devine. Small serves, perfect for a light (ish) lunch. Will come again. Ps. Wednesday night is oyster night! That's a draw card for us two seafood lovers.
Simple
Inconsistent service, mediocre food, indoors smelt a bit pukey at Saturday lunchtime - shame though, good view and location.
The Non Existent Diet
Surprisingly brilliant. I’ve been to the Royal at least five different times now, and it’s food has always been pretty standard. For dinner that night we are there for a friend’s birthday and it’s booking of 30 people strong. All of us were pretty impressed with our meals and didn’t take too long for it all to come out (we probably waited about 30 minutes for all our mains to come out at our table of 10). During that time, we were given our entrees which was Garlic Ciabatta bread ($9 a serve). The ciabatta was crusty, buttery and not over the top with the garlic. A great starter.<br/><br/>The menu has an extraordinary number of dishes on their mains list, with a variety of different poultry, seafood and vegetables on offer. I have the Oven Baked Lamb Rump ($38). The lamb is cooked to perfection – just pink on the inside, succulent and sliced in even generous portions. The potatoes and buttered carrots are also fabulously cooked, the carrots and spinach adding a nice amount of colour to the dish. The shiraz jus is amazing and goes well with the meat.<br/><br/>No one can fault Royal’s location – Claisebrook Cove is simply beautiful. I think the Royal caters for many types of customers – those who want to have a drink on a Friday night, or a hearty meal with a large group of friends, as well as those who enjoy breakfast by the waterside. The food was executed to near perfection and the service was nothing to complain about. All in all, a great dining experience.
Customer
Wont be going back. Killing one customer at a time... Clearly The Royal in East Perth do not value customer service. We were either going to die from starvation after waiting well over an hour for food (one friend over two hours, then having to eat alone), or our friend who is anaphylactic and clearly explained what she couldn't have 3 times and they brought out her dinner with a plate full of exactly what she couldn't eat. Then management were extremely rude about it as apparently we didn't actually explain how 'severe' the allergy was.... I don't think we could have explained it any clearer!
Ross From Australia
We waited over an hour for food. One of our table had a severe allergy to nuts and legumes. Explained three times whilst ordering. This clearly wasn't enough, came out with a chick or salad. 15minutes later same contaminated plate with a different salad. Goes back and 39 minutes later she gets a very tough new steak and salad with no chick peas. Manager says meal for her will be free. When we go to pay they only discounted a few drinks. We call the manager over, this time a female and he says, yes well we haven't deducted that meal because you weren't clear enough on how severe your allergy was. !!! Unbelievable, after arguing with her she credited it and all 12 of us left angry. Never going back here.
Louise
Bad service. I love the Royal - the setting is beautiful - however the service is just plain bad. If the staff don't ignore you completely they harass you...for your credit card! My friends and I wanted to order a bottle of wine to share over lunch at our outside table. It seemed like a simple request however we spent the next 15 minutes filling out paperwork and handing over various credit cards to ensure we weren't 'going to run off without paying'.<br/>On another occasion my partner and I ordered food at the bar. We ordered the pasta and squid. A simple order, yet the staff took 30 minutes to enter our order correctly into the til and take our money. Finally, after our order was given to the kitchen, we were told there was a 1.5 hour wait for food! Why were we not told this before we ordered??? Poor service.
Jane Claridge
We had breakfast at The Royal this morning, after the HBF fun run. Despite the large crowds, service was fast and friendly. The food was typical breakfast fare but done very well and despite being told there was a 45 minute wait, coffees and drinks came promptly and the wait was only 30 minutes. We would go back, the setting is great!

Surprising.. Wow. i would have never expected this during my visit to perth. the royal isn't just your local pub in prestigious east perth, its a place suitable for gatherings with great quality food.<br/><br/>staffs were friendly and managed to serve out our meals (despite the large group) without any issues. food was great and so were the drinks. the only thing about the royal is having to order each drink at the bar.

Tuesday Lunch. Just enjoyed a wonderful family gathering at the Waterfront. My husband remarked it was the best eating out experience he has had in the last couple of years. Sat outside and the service was `happy` impeccably timed and informative. Each and everyone of us enjoyed our chosen dishes and will be back to further explore the menu

Disappointing. Went to The Royal today for my sisters birthday lunch. I ordered a pasta dish with the gluten free pasta option and my mum ordered the same with regular pasta. The waitress came out with both pasta dishes and wasn't able to tell us which one was gluten free because the other waitress who took our order didn't write down that one was supposed to be gluten free. After waiting a further 20 minutes for my gluten free pasta, the pasta was undercooked and I couldn't eat more than a quarter of it. <br/><br/>Another issue we had was that they brought out sparkling water instead of still water, and told us that because we had poured a glass of it, it was still going to be charged to our bill - which by the way was $10. Even though they had already opened it by the time they got to our table. I found the waiter who came and saw us about the water was quite rude.<br/><br/>The view and the location are the only things going for the restaurant, I don't recommend it at all. Very disappointing.

Quality of food is not good. Salt and pepper squid tasted of flour. Sweet chilli sauce was diluted. The pasta was very pedestrian. Could have made better myself. Service was slow. We went early for lunch, and our starter of oysters took 40 minutes to arrive. I don't recommend.

Happy Easter!. I ate at the Royal for the first time over the Easter weekend and i was extremely impressed with the service and the food. The staff were very friendly and the food came out with perfect timing. The oysters were sweet and fresh and the pizzas were amazing!

Service was disgusting, waited almost 2 hours. Watched other tables that arrived after us leave before we recieved our meals. Our booked table was mostly in the sun and the chairs were too hot to sit on with half our table sitting on their serviettes, we asked for the mist to be turned on and our request was rejected. Sitting uncomfortable for that long with elderly people and children was not acceptable :(

Lovely View. I have eaten here twice now, the food is a bit on the pricey side but its lovely and the view is great, its a nice way to spend your lunchtime.

Fabulous food and service. We dined here last evening for my sons 30th celebration. A party of twenty or so over two tables. We could not have asked for more prompt or courteous service. Each table had menus as soon as they were seated. The kitchen happily held the orders until the last of the party had arrived. I had the scollops with salmon ....best I have ever had. Portions were of a good size but not over done. Everyones meal was served together and attention was paid to requests re one with nut allergy. They happily supplied cutlery and crockery for the serving of the birthday cake which they refrigerated and then presented on a nice platter with candles lit. Prices were a little up but with the standard of the food, the service and waterfront outlook it was worth every cent. Cocktails were also very nicely done. Well done to all staff, we loved our night at the royal.

Don't Bother. Great location, end of story, food ordinary and overpriced. Service even worse.<br/>A party of 10 of us ordered our meals, an hour later the waiter arrived to say that the entree I had ordered was no longer available and could I order something else. Surely it didn't take an hour to find that out. Once we had finished the entrees it took another 45 minutes for the mains to arrive. Some of the party needed to leave for various reasons, despite several requests for a hurry up, no sense of urgency was demonstrated by the staff.<br/>Lots of better places in the area.

Fun and Faultless service!. In my opinion Perth is not well known for exceptional service. Time and time again, that part of the eating out experience is letting me down and it is very frustrating. What's wrong with greeting customers with a smile and making them feel special?<br/>The five of us had a meal at The Royal on the Waterfront yesterday evening. It was very busy, but from the moment we were shown to our table by our very friendly and joking manager until the moment we left, the service was just unbelievable. Both the managers and the wait staff were constant on the lookout for making our experience exceptional. Our manager (in the photo) saw our camera and said; "What's that camera laying idle on the table? Come on, let's get a group photo going." And he proceeded to boss us around until he was happy with the grouping. Another guy kept an eye on our table regarding the drinks and by asking us at intervals if everything was all right.( Which it was; the food was excellent and worthy of a return visit on its own merit!) The waitress was also very efficient and pleasant.(in photo with manager) We asked for bread and olive oil. It was not on the menu but was promptly delivered. The picture really tells the whole story. We'll definitively go back and are very happy to recommend the restaurant to people who value good service.

What a delight!!. We had visiting rellies from Sydney and we were looking for a relaxed environment with a view, good food and service. We had been to the Royal in East Perth some time ago and remembered it fondly, however reading the reviews on urban spoon we were a bit concerned that things might have changed but it was a bit late to change as we had alrady made arrangements to pick them up in the city. <br/>We needn't have worried the evening was a delight, we had a table outside, the evening was balmy and calm, the waitperson (Caroline) was charming, attentive and knowledgeable, the food was excellent ( the spaghetti marinara was to die for) and the whole evening was such a success that we felt we needed to balance some of the more negative comments on this site.

We really enjoyed our valentine's dinner at the royal last night. The atmosphere was perfect, complimentary champagne and rose on arrival was a really nice touch, the service was friendly and efficient, the food came out within a good time (under 20 min) and was really tasty. The only constructive suggestion to The Royal is that as a vegetarian it would have been nice to have a starter option available and more than one main option (I'm not really a fan of risotto although yours was tasty risotto in general just makes me feel a bit queasy). But other than that thank you for helping to make our evening so beautiful.

This place has a great location, but that's where it stops. The food is average at best and the service is really really bad. Don't pay the higher prices here, go elsewhere and get better value for money.

Where to start? Was ask for a credit card upfront, and I quote, so we don't do a runner! We waited over an hour for our meals and when a waitress finally approached us (chewing gum) blaintedly asked what r ya waitin for. After answering, Everything, she simply shrugged her shoulders and said, well we're closing now anyway.I was shocked at the service (lack of) and approached the manager to retrieve my card and leave! Shannon (the supervisor) was fantastic, defused the situation and encouraged us to stay. Luckerly the food was amazing, full compliments to the chefs. Service and professionalism of the floor staff however, is seriously lacking. Unlikely to return...

LOVE THIS PLACE. Friends said lets meet at the Royal, I agreed but thought OH MY GOD, EAST PERTH.<br/>Got there on a Sunday Afternoon, lovely day, what a SURPRISE this place is.<br/>Families there, single people old and young. Dads and Mums with kids/babies.<br/>Lovely view, nice set up, FRIENDLY STAFF, Great Food.<br/>This is a TRUE Family Pub.<br/>Oh yes I shall be going back.<br/>Changed my mind about East Perth for sure.

Hit and Miss- Great drinks though!. I love coming here for a relaxing drink watching the sunset, and hopefully catch a glimpse of the dolphins playing in the cove! The drinks menu is extensive, although a little expensive. A must-try is the Billabong alcoholic ginger beer which is dangerously easy to drink! Most times i have eaten here the food has looked amazing on the menu, but for some reason when it has come out it's a bit disappointing. The seafood pasta contains a few measly mussels and the burgers have been a bit dry and boring. Having said that, I ate here not long ago and had the chicken and avocado salad which tasted amazing! at $26 for a salad i think you are paying a bit for the view also.

The royal is great. Just had a wonderful anniversary lunch, recieved a free drink once seated, the food, views and staff were great. we have been many times befor and have never had a bad experience, we highly recommend the Royal and we will be back.

Very disappointing. We took friends from Sydney here for dinner last week whilst the setting is gorgeous it all goes downhill from there. We ordered the antipasto platter which was extremely disappointing - the pickled octopus was non-existent and the rest was just average. After waiting well over 1 hour for our mains they finally arrived. I ordered the gnocchi which I promptly sent back after one mouthful. It was overcooked, bland and simply in edible. They did remove from the bill and offer up another choice but I was we'll over eating by then. I had heard this restaurant can be hit and miss - I guess we were just unlucky.
Yogi
Friendly staff, good size meals and nice choice of desserts. We enjoyed everything and will be back again.

Xmas Function was superb. I would highly recommend The Royal for a function. In spite of it being a very busy Friday night our christmas function for 20 was perfect. Great service, excellent 3 course menu with food that exceeded everyone's expectations. A nice work outing, at a good size outdoor table. Must try breakfast.

Very very disappointing. We are cyclists. We wear expensive, appropriate cycling gear when we ride to breakfast on Sundays with our grandsons. We have enjoyed Lamonts, Halo and other fine restaurants which have never minded our arrival in cycling gear. <br/><br/>Last Sunday we thought we'd try the Royal, which has just opened for Sunday morning breakfast during the Summer months. We were told that our clothing meant we were relegated to the bar area, as the "restaurant" was reserved for well dressed patrons. This was an alfresco area - nothing special. <br/><br/>We were astonished that in this day and age a restaurant would be so prejudiced against cyclists that despite having empty tables, it refused us for wearing lycra. <br/><br/>Shame on you The Royal. We won't be patronising you any time soon. <br/><br/>Cyclists beware!

Good for coffee. Stop off here regularly on Sunday avo after riding through East Perth. Always busy for the Sun sesh, but people are still having lunch by late afternoon. It's a big place so there's lots of room to accommodate, with some of the finest looking waitresses in Perth. Coffee is relaxing overlooking the water, definitely recommend!
Sam
My dad and I went for lunch and yes the food was great, and the service was equally as good, we were absolutely disgusted that not only did we have to hand over a credit card to sit outside, we also had to sign a waiver form, so not only did they have a signature, they had the credit card behind the bar too. This was such an embarrassment, why not just pay upfront at the counter, or just take the credit card. It was such an ordeal to have lunch for 2, anyone would think we were having a corporate lunch... Wasn't happy, the royal could manage this better. I have never been asked for anything of the sort on a Monday afternoon.
Frank
NOT IMPRESSED. Saturday I was taken to The Royal on the Waterfront for lunch (there was 8 of us). Firstly they don't take your orders at the table you need to go and pay at the counter as you place your order, just like ordering fast food at hungry jacks. Then even though there are waiters walking around twiddling their thumbs you need to go to the bar to order drinks. This was the punishment for sitting outside.<br/>Secondly it took over an hour to get our food and the standard of the steak sandwich dish and the portion was quite poor for $24.00, that's about $7.00 more than a pub meal and no were near as good. We were advised by the waitress that a 45 minute wait is standard and that they were busy....that's a load of bull go to a real restaurant you will NOT have to wait approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes to get served and if your busy get more staff. The place wasn't even full what would have they done then? (where is Gordon Ramsay when you need him).<br/>Overall a very disappointing experience for my birthday and I can assure you I will be letting everyone know where NOT to go!!!
Nic
Terrible Service!!! We went.... Terrible Service!!!<br/>We went on a sat for lunch and had to track our waiter down to order our first drinks, our food, our second round of drinks, for them to take our entree plates & we waited 45 minutes for 2 salads :(
Jessie Parker
Everyone enjoyed their meals, even if they were overpriced. However; one of the ladies who served us did not so much as crack a smile and made us feel as though we were inconvenience eating there! It left a bitter taste in our mouth, so much so that we'll probably go elsewhere for a 45 dollar steak
CW
Very disappointing. While the food was actually very good, it was over shadowed by the service and attitude!<br/><br/>We booked for lunch, table for 10 inside as we knew it would be a warm & muggy day.<br/><br/>The table was outside, ok we can live with that and didn't make a fuss.<br/><br/>But then we are told that we need to order and pay for our food and drinks inside - separate areas mind you? <br/>None of the drinks at the bar have prices nor does the wine list and asking only appeared to irritate the bar tender? Well excuse me!<br/>Having to go to the bar to order and pay only meant we drank much less than normal because there is no table service and it's a pain. In fact we only had 1 lot of drinks.<br/><br/>The food came out 1hr after we ordered, needless to say not impressed. Finally the overpriced food, Steak sangie $24, small bowl of olives $10 for about 12 olives?<br/>We will not be going back nor recommending it......sorry but no one seemed to care and excuses like we are busy, just don't cut it!
Amy
Breakfast is ok, pizzas are really nice and the potato frites are amazing! Overall though, way over priced - nobody can justify $40 for a pizza!
Kinder_Ivan
Have been here twice now although only for coffee. arrived late on a Sunday afternoon and were met by a lovely Indian looking waitress who told us we were looking at a 45 minute minimum wait for food: we decided on just a quick coffee which was very good. the royal seems very popular, and from the few times we've been here, patrons looked happy with their orders and the staff were very friendly and efficient. Will definitely come and have dinner one night and see if its worth the wait ;p
Annie
Came here twice first time at dinner and it was nice. Second time on sunday for lunch with a couple of mates. Service was absolutely terrible the lady who served was rude and unfriendly. The sirloin was disgusting and the black pepper sauce was a joke. Only good thing was the delicious ice chocolate.
Maggie
Excellence - food & service!!. Wow factor +++ visitors to Perth and were really impressed with this lovely spot. Excellent service, quick with the water to the table, attentive but not in your face. 3 of us shared salt & pepper squid to start and were all wishing we'd ordered it for mains as it melted in our mouths. Seafood marinara was declared best ever, and an amazing Antarctic scallop dish with salmon - to die for. Very good value for money - no room for dessert. Highly recommended - it was a very cool evening but it would be lovely sitting outside for lunch on a nice day.
Sludge
Smashed my expectations. After comments over the years, I was expecting high prices and below average food; but an excellent venue. Instead, we happily found a lovely bar, wonderful food , enjoyed by all (I loved my marinara and the pizza's received rave reviews) and prices that were surprisingly decent.<br/><br/>We ate in the bar section, so hopefully the restaurant is even better.

Take the train and only go for the beer.. My second visit to the Royal, the first was at lunchtime for business. This occasion was a family”do” and as we were a large party I will only review the dishes eaten within conversation distance.<br/>Ignore the website which flatters the place. The Royal is a carpeted concrete basement pub showing signs of ageing décor, albeit with a stunning view of the Claisebrook inlet. Access is by way of a steep, grubby staircase from the street. The restaurant area has tables as close as practical to allow a sideways shuffle between chairs, it is a busy place. <br/>My partner and I navigated to our table without being approached and sat for some fifteen minutes before a very pleasant server arrived and started to pass out menus. Tiny print, several of the more elderly in our party had difficulty in reading it, accompanied by a sheet of larger font specials and a wine list. You have to get your own drinks from the bar or have a complex bill to split at the end (No separate bills here) apparently the bunker doesn't run to modern technology. <br/><br/>Ample time for pre-prandial drinks, I had a delicious pint of hoppy Margaret River India Pale Ale, another diner snaffled a bottle of Tasmanian Pinot Noir and on tasting it was very good. So far we are doing well. Orders were placed, I only ordered a main, advertised as quote “Red Mullet on celeriac and onion puree with scallop potatoes and a spanish onion yoghurt salad”, sounded ltra yum.My partner ordered chowder as an entree. The starters all arrived without undue delay, and tasting the chowder I found it full, rich and tasty with tender prawns in a thick fishy base. No complaints about the entrees voiced from any in the party.<br/> Dishes were cleared just before the mains arrived and the disasters began. My partner's spatchcock tasted as if grilled on an unwashed stevedores toenails after a hard day on the docks. The lady opposite noted that her asparagus had been roasted on the same implement. Credit where due the waiter arrived with alacrity and credited the offending spatchcock immediately. I hope there is a sous chef still cleaning the offending grill as I write. Both medium sirloins looked cooked perfectly but the roast vegetables were not as expected. Opposite me, the spaghetti marinara looked amazing with a half cray in shell perched atop , sadly the actual bulk of the dish was pronounced “ordinary” by the diner.<br/>The 25 year old appetite on legs next to me judged his pasta tasty if unusually flavoured, but an inadequate portion, inexcusable given the prices here. The guest of honour had a wild mushroom risotto, very tasty, rice perfect ,sadly the mushrooms had the fight cooked out of them some time before service and were rubbery. My well written dish arrived, fish slightly overcooked,, on a tasteless smear of something, the scalloped potatoes were buried under the fish and a huge mound of ribbon cut cucumber (my partner insisted it was zucchini; it looked so unappetising I didn't taste it) in thin liquid. The sauce (?) had soaked through and concealed any textural differences between the tasteless smear and the soggy spuds. No onions were evident anywhere. <br/>The bottom end of the table seemed to have got the lucky end with cleared plates and satisfied nods, I wish I'd had what they did. <br/>Desserts were next, huge, bought in, and slapped on the plate, 'nuff said and nothing changed since my first visit. Cold coffee not as ordered finished the evening for us.<br/><br/>On the plus side the front of house staff were, without exception, well trained, eager to please and unobtrusive. The beer was outstanding. The language of the menu makes the food sound first rate; top marks for creative writing there. The view, although lovely does not make up for the shortcomings. <br/>The Royal makes the complaints of Melbournites about the price of indifferent food in Perth credible. And a final whinge..Wilson parking (unmanned) was $13.00 for 4 hours and then had the cheek to surcharge me for using a credit card! . Someone is taking us for mugs in East Perth.
Steve
The WORST place ever would never go there again..
Michael Epis
Overpriced and always a fail, you can't rest on your location forever Royal. Too many chances, no more from me. Fail
What Can I Bake?
Pull up on our boat on a Monday start of our 2 week holidays and what a bunch of unhappy staff!! Very expensive, if they don't want to work at a lovely pub on a Monday with people having a leisurely lunch and on holidays around them then don't work in hospitality, shpuld have fried up sangas on herrison island!! Best thing was filling up our growler for $20 and putting out of their on our boat! No thanks!

Very disappointing. We booked for our anniversary dinner at The Royal. The location was lovely. But apart from the guy who greeted us, the staff were indifferent. Does it really take so much effort to smile?! And the food? $37 for a TINY plate of snapper. The most polite word for that was "bland". It would have been nice if we'd been able to have a decent conversation, but there was a crowd at the other end of the room roaring at some football game - had we just stumbled into a sports bar? The Royal is overpriced and pretentious. <br/><br/>We didn't want to give them our dessert money, so we went for a walk and found a delightful place right next door (The Partisan) which was everything the Royal was not in terms of service, food, value and atmosphere - with the same beautiful location.

Each time the standards just drop. Was a very nice place a few years ago... sadly not as good as it used to be. Had a birthday here with some friends a few years ago and found them being very unorganised... Hopefully they step up!!

Enjoyed Father's Day lunch. Even though busy, the service was friendly and the food was delicious. <br/>The location is an added bonus.

Not pub grub. A great spot and the food is good. Do not expect this to be your pub style eatery.

Disgraceful. I was absolutely disgraced last night I was charged $3.90 for a glass of water with a dash of lime cordial in it! The Royal barman also told me I couldn't get my water in a pint glass. Remind me who is the paying customer??<br/><br/>I have lime cordial in my water all the time and have done so for years and never once have I been charged money in Perth for lime cordial in my water, an absolute disgrace!!! I will be telling everyone about how disgraceful this is for customer satisfaction!

Great place to spend a sunday morning. Great view. Food is very average and coffee is not that good.

Just went for my birthday dinner with family, not a fan of sea food so i went for the scotch fillet which was $41.50. I asked for it to be cooked medium, it came out to me rare, and frankly not even warm let alone hot. Not worth the price at all. The steak itself was probably not even 400g, and for such a high price. <br/>Also the margharita with beer in it was gross, why ruin such a great recipe by adding beer?
Em
Extremey underwhelming. Despite the restaurant being half empty the service was terrible and slow, leaving my partner and I wondering at what point it became OUR pleasure to be served by the wait staff. The entrees were enjoyable, and I would recommend the saffron gnocchi at a drop of a hat, however, the mains (scotch fillet and chicken pasta) were dry, undercooked and luke warm in both instances. It took 15 minutes for our visibly empty plates to be taken from us despite the fact we were sat 10 metres from the kitchen so we were able to see the gaggle of wait staff talking and joking with the maî·tre d'. We were not offered dessert or another drink and after waiting another 5 minutes paid and left. Would highly not recommend.

Good pub grub. We visited on Tuesday for the new music quiz night. Forever on a midweek diet, I tried to pick the healthiest thing on the menu which was the 'warm salad'. It was delicious but pretty small for a $24 salad. My partner had the spaghetti marinara which was ok. We were a table of 8 and everyone else's steak sanga's and fish and chips looked pretty good and the meals came out relatively quickly.

A cold night!, an even colder suprise!. There were 8 of us all looking forward to a night out at the royal, part of our group consisted of 2 chefs, 3 wait staff, 1 host, we all work at a 5 star resort in perth, ne how enuf about us lets talk about the food ect, the food was abit slow coming out it was semi full in the royal so we wernt to fussed about that because we know from experience that when its busy food may take abit longer to go out, but however when the food did arrive some dishes were not what we were expecting, example: Mains, the 3 steak dishes we ordered come out warm at best, 2 were sent back us hoping the next time around they would be hot, not much luck there, on 2 of the fish dishes the potaoes were warmish on 1 and stone cold on the other, i guess somone forgot to tell the boys at the back of house that after you take the food from the fridge its needs to be heated up before serving, but they did kindly say sorry and offered to replace the dishes us again hoping the all the food on the plates would come out hot, success it did, but you could tell that the potatos had been put in a microwave oven, abit dry they was, and the fish from all 3 dishes definatley under seasoned, if seasoned at all, some good points though, entree's were fantastic, scallops, salt n pepper squid, oysters went down a treat, service was friendly aswel, verdict, we wont be going back again after paying $540 we kinda expected more, location is loverly though, and its not like we set out to complain and get a discount, we just expected more i guess.
Col Lewis
Great location, poor, poor food. This place has just about everything going for it - location by the water, outdoor seating sheltered from the wind, lots of passing joggers, cyclists and walkers to look at while you take in the afternoon sun, but if you're there for the food, you may be very disappointed .......and it takes a long time to find that out.<br/><br/>We were told the delay in meals was 45 mins, but what she really meant to say was "you'll be hungry and watch other people being served for an hour and twenty minutes" Seriously, an hour an twenty from ordering to plates on the table.!!! Would you be happy with that?<br/><br/>And the meals? - in a party of four, no-one had a quality meal. My wild Barramundi should have been served with a spoon, not a fork. It was so mushy it was much closer to a soup than a peice of fillet. The pasta dishes were more tomato based sause than pasta....the pasta was drowing in sauce.<br/><br/>Theres a lot of choice in this area and we'll look further than The Royal next time.
Stina
Below par on the restaurant side. Great for drinks but the food is overpriced and average. $50 for a steak should mean an amazing taste but I would compare it to a pub steak for $30.

Lunch Many times. Although I have been to lunch many times, it has usually been during the week and the service has been phenomenal... Then I went on a weekend and there was an hour wait for food. They have a limited variety of choices on the lunch menu but the food that i have been served has been ok... not good not bad, just ok...
Tom Richardson
Great scene by the water and the shared dishes were spot on. The salt and pepper squid sensational.
Boomerangirl
Great location, good beer, mediocre food and overpriced wine. When it gets busy you can't breathe for all the nicotine addicts, and on Sunday arvos in summer you can't hear yorself think for all the loud mouthed wankers it attracts. Vastly overrated IMHO
Thepinkhouse
We were here for a working lunch yesterday. A lovely location and just a pleasant experience. The service was a bit slow but worth the wait. My burger was thick and juicy. My companionshad the salt and pepper squid which looked and tasted great. Cake was delicious but coffees were cold by the time they got to us. I have been going to The Royal for years now and I think it is a lovely place for lunch and just a great place to go. Would love to sit and watch the world go by one weekend.
Almond Bum
View, service and food all excellent for a lazy Sunday lunch.
Mint
Love love love the royal!! We usually sit outside on the bar side..on a nice sunny day you can sit here for hours. I can see that most of the negative comments are related to the restaurant side of the royal I have eaten there twice and yes it was very busy and it took a while to get drinks refreshed and meals bought out but its a busy venue...I have been to the royal every year for my birthday for the last 4 year's and will be back again this year :)
Alida
Location, atmosphere, and service very good. Pity about the food, very average:(((

Best place in East Perth. I have been going to The Royal for several years now and I am baffled at the amount of negative posts. It seems to me that the people who have posted a complaint are simply the kind of people who like to complain!<br/>The Royal is hands down my favourite venue in East Perth.<br/>Working in hospitality myself I can be quite judgemental of a place but The Royal ticks all the boxes for me great staff, fantastic view, great beverage selection (I especially love the Colonial beers) and tasty food.<br/>To those peole that complain about the wait for food on a busy day I say look around you and see just how busy it is. You are not the only person in the place... if you want instant food go to Mcdonalds!<br/><br/>If you haven't been to The Royal do yourself a favour and check it out!
LittleSarah83
Great service at the start but everything else was average.
Beno_perth
Don't bother going..... Being greeted with a terse "there's a 45 minute wait for food" did not bode well for a nice family breakfast on a lovely Sunday morning.<br/>There was one nice staff member, a young brunette, but the rest don't seem to understand hospitality - surly, dismissive, wearing sunglasses inside while serving food!<br/>At least 20 minutes to get a pot of tea - how long does it take to put a teabag and hot water in a pot! Then when the food finally arrived after 60 minutes it was very basic (could do a better full breakfast at home without trying), average and bland. The hollandaise sauce was so obviously prepared well ahead of time and they had run out of the omelette!!!! Does the chef not know how to whisk eggs?<br/>With the wealth of other options available, I would not bother going here - better going next door to Toast or Partisans, but be prepared to brave the Sunday morning crowds.

Had a bad service experience at the Royal this evening. My friend and I both ordered sparkling wines and her glass was only half as full as mine. When she took it back to complain she was told that her glass was wider and the volume was the same. Once we had finished out wines we topped up my glass with water and poured it into hers and the volume was clearly higher than what they poured her. When we took the evidence back to show the bar staff they argued that I, in fact, had received more than I should and we were then ignored by that staff member. Sounds petty but we were also over-charged (an extra 10% on top of the public holiday 15% surcharge) so we were not impressed! The whole situation could have been resolved just by apologizing to my friend and topping up her glass but instead they lost out on an extra $60 we would have spent on a second round but decided to boycott due to the terrible service we received!

Total disappointment. This place was very disappointing. Came here for a friend's birthday and I can safely say The Royal ruined it. We were a group of six people, most of whom ordered fish and chips or steak. We placed our orders which came no less than fifty minutes later. The portions were very small for the price we paid and the food was average. As an apology we got a round of free drinks but they only let us have beer which I don't even drink. They made a mistake with two of the dishes, forgetting the chips in one and the salad in the other.<br/><br/>Over all, we were totally disappointed with the service, portions and pricing. The restaurant itself was too dimly lit as well and we were all squashed together at the table with hardy any room for our elbows to move. By the time we got our food we all wanted to leave but it was too late to organise anything else to do because it took so long.<br/> <br/>In my opinion, the only thing that was enjoyable about this restaurant was the view of the river. I do not recommend this place for a group gathering. I will not be back.

Good.. I saw the rating on here (57% - yikes) and felt compelled to mention my experience from a couple of months ago.<br/><br/>Our group (which consisted of 15 adults plus one baby in a pram) booked for lunch during the week. I was the one with the baby and got there a bit later than everyone else (workmates). When I arrived the others all had a drink and after a couple of minutes for me to check out the menu, our orders were taken.<br/><br/>The food came out fast. It was good. I chose from one of the two vego meals on the menu and was happy with my choice. From memory my pasta was only $19- trust me when I say I've paid a lot more for a bit of vegies and pasta at other places.<br/><br/>Drinks were prompt and they came back to get more drink orders a couple of times over the course of the lunch.<br/><br/>We had brought a cake to the Royal and they brought it out after the meal with all the plates and cutlery. Easy.<br/><br/>Once you have a kid, you look on places in a whole new light. I was the one with the baby in our group. The Royal was fast and efficient, had some carpet for baby to play on, and was just easy. There is a lift you can take the pram on to get to the main area. I would recommend to anyone who is lugging a pram around or any groups in general.<br/><br/>All that and the view was great. And no, I don't own the place haha.

Sad :( used to come here years ago and it looks like the food and service is not the same as it used to be. Had a burger and was disappointed with the mince beef that was tasteless. The waitress was lovely really trying her best but we had to wait too long for our food. Another long wait for our coffee with a very dry sticky date cake. Will not come here to eat again and yes the prices are over the top for what you get..... felt ripped off for what we got.
Morgs
Disgraceful rip off. We went for a family dinner including my parents and my13 year old daughter, it took 15 minutes after being seated to get a menu, more than 2 hours to be served our meals, after having asked the wait staff three times why it was taking so long.. my daughter went to sleep on my lap waiting for her dinner. There was no discount or offer of a free drink to compensate us. Instant mash with the steak, ravioli was inedible and tasted of bleach. Squid was the same prebattered frozen type you get in a basic pub. The lamb pasta tasted very gamey and looked like they had just scraped the meat off a shank and thrown it in the pan, unable to be eaten. Interior was very noisy. Prices were unnecessarily high. We had to leave the table and approach the bar to get our drinks refreshed. Never, never again.

Sucks. With out doubt the most over rated place ever. The food was over cooked. My wife had peppered squid with so much pepper on it you couldn't see it and it was un eat able. my steak was like leather. <br/><br/>Dont expect your food quickly either...1.5 hrs after ordering!!!!<br/><br/>You cant complain about the service...There isnt any<br/><br/>and for all that... they charge like a wounded bull
Mimi
Being told that the Chef is too cranky to cater for our request is not good enough especially after waiting over a hour and a half to ask for our request after being initially told that the kitchen was too busy. What happened to the customer is always right? And since when is it up to the Chefs mood to cater for a smile request? This place is nothing what it used to be before taken over by Colonial, I'm almost afraid to see what The Printhall will be like!!!!!

Great location but ordinary overpriced food. so disappointing. would never go back for the indifferent service and how else can you say except crappy food? good for people watching and thats about it. thumbs down.

Great cocktails, excellent nibbles, good service and perfect location on the waters edge. Would highly recommend!

Not worth your time or money. Bored, standoffish service, bordering on offensive. Food I'd feel sheepish about serving at home, let alone charging steep prices for. If someone had bothered to taste my meal before sending it out, they would have realised that the "home-made sweet chili sauce" tasted of nothing but sugar syrup - I wouldn't have noticed anything amiss if they'd served it on pancakes. Never going back.

A Winner. I stumbled upon the Royal when in East Perth this week and the family sat down for an enjoyable lunch. I have read some of the reviews on Urbanspoon and must say, that the Royal hit all three important aspects for me. 1. The service was good - prompt, efficient and friendly. 2. The food quality was very good, full of flavour and enjoyable and 3. The location was fantastic. Dining outside with the kids on a gorgeous summer day was great.

Great Location. The Title says it all. Have been here at least 30 times over the past 4 years and keep hoping the food and the service will improve but it never does.<br/><br/>Love having a drink here. When I do I always get my own drinks.<br/><br/>However it is becoming more and more just another Pub with the usual assortment of suspects. <br/><br/>They risk alienating the locak residnets if they don't start to enforce some begaviour codes.<br/><br/>They need to watch this as most of us don't come down to hear drunken idiots swearing and carrying on.

Food is pretty average service is worse and they struggle with group bookings. The views and set up is great.

Bad serrvice. Been here often as i live across the road but it's nothing special. setting is great and relaxing and their local "colonial" range of beers are excellent. food however is quite average except for their cape grim burger which is quite tasty. service is embarassing though. the inside of the pub has smelt of vomit for about 3 years as well. dont know what it is and why they have never gotten rid of it!
Ali
Great location - food not so good. I have eaten at 'The Royal' many times but today the food was pretty average and I feel over priced. The fish was under cooked and the chips soggy, the cake was a fraction of the usual size served and the coffee well it was average. Sorry .....but you need to lift your game if this wasn't a one off
Derik
Fantastic food! Freshly cooked Atlantic Cod was simply to die for. Beautiful location and our waiter was polite attentive and nothing like what other people have described them as. Highly recommend
Leon
Bad service, average food. We had a booking for eight at 8:00 on a Saturday night. We didn't receive our meals until 9:45 and we were only offered a free round of beers/wine as an apology. By the time we ate it was too late to continue with the rest of our plans for the evening.<br/>Everyone agreed the food was pretty average for the price, and the portion sizes varied dramatically. $3.80 for a glass of soft drink is a bit silly too. There isn't much ambience for a waterfront restaurant. All the tables are packed in like sardines. The place is very noisey inside.<br/>We asked what some of the unusual items on the menu were and the waitress had to go check. My cod and chips didn't come with chips but my friend's did.<br/>If they can't afford quality ingredients and staff because they're paying too much on their lease they should just throw in the towel and stop ripping off unsuspecting patrons.<br/>None of us would go back.
Shane
The food is over priced there is 2 seperate menus bar and restaurant if you are on the bar side out side you can't order from restaurant menu Which is rubbish as they only have one kitchen the bar menu is too limited The out door area is great if you like smoking as it stinks staff are not great at there job either overall would not waste my time
Nic
Bloody awful service.. The wait staff, if you could call them that are the rudest wait staff in Perth. One walked off in mid sentence, another continued to walk past despite catching his eye and talking to him, several of them were just too busy gossiping to respond to our attempts to catch their attention etc etc - what should have been a lovely romantic meal for two, left us openly embarrassed by the dismissive wait staff. The food was nice, although did receive a burnt coffee and had to ask for sugar, a tad on the expensive side for pub food and the wait staff are bloody awful.

Lovely spot for a very pleasant catch up with friends and a great meal. Service was friendly and attentive, location was gorgeous and food was amazing. Hope to come back again soon.

Such a lovely location. The seating in the restaurant wasn't spectacular but that's my only con. Pros: service was fast, meals were rich and tastey and the drinks list was great. Will go back

The Royal - awesome. Had dinner at the royal last night and was absolutely fantastic. We had the best waitess ever. Going back soon!!!
Bonnie K
Went here around the beginning of September &the service was decent but the wait &quality of the food was ridiculous; waited half an hour for kilpatrick oysters which came out with the bacon burnt; &then waited another 40 minutes for mains&they didn't even get the steak right ! one of my friends had to send her steak back cos she's pregnant &it was too raw, it came back not even well done. I never used to mind the wait here cos I knew the food would be worth it, but the last time I went disappointed me ! won't be back for a while.
BUMBLEBEE
A gorgeous place to sit in the sunshine & look over the estuary... But yesterday's lunch was not fabulous! Firstly, our glass of champagne was flat, then we had to wait over an hour for our orders to arrive (steak burger & chips and a cajun chicken salad - both are usually quick meals) despite asking when it will be coming out 2 times! Eventually it arrived & both were delicious. The wait staff were friendly but most looked like they were wandering around aimlessly. We had to ask for a free glass of wine as no offer of compensation was made - which the manager obliged. I'm sure we'll go back sometime cause the location & food is nice but we'll be sure not to plan on a 'quick meal' or have anything pressing to do afterward.
B
Royally Bad!. There are only two good things about this place. The location and the drinks. Although the location is spoilt by the filthy smokers sitting in the outdoor area and the drinks are very expensive, especially the beer.<br/><br/>Food is massively over priced with hit and miss quality.<br/><br/>Such a shame because it has so much potential.... since it changed hands a few years ago it has continued to go downhill.
Sarah
Liked the specials. Very much enjoyed this resturant. Most of the dishes my family and I ordered were enjoyable, particularly those from the specials list ie. lamb shanks. Foudn the lighting a little too dull though very hard for eyes to adjust
Purveyor Of Fine Foods
Never go back. Where do I begin... There were 9 in our party and as life long catering professionals we eat out as a group regularly. The Royal disappointed in every way. The service (or lack there of) was shocking, it took 3 attempts to get someone's attentions to take a drink order and a further 30 minutes before it arrived. And this was NOT due to lack of staff, there were ample walking around chatting amoungst themselves. The food was only average with 2 plates being returned to the kitchen without so much as an apology or query as to why and can we offer you something else. Needless to say we shared what was remaining on the table with our somewhat hungry friends.<br/>The ONLY positive thing about the day was the weather and the company. We remained sitting outside soaking up the sun still wanting to spend money on coffees & desserts which also took forever. At the end of the day we paid $95/person for a lunch worth a fraction of that.

You know your struggling when..... You've looked at the menu for a good 10mins, gone over it back and front and thought.. There isn't much I like on this menu? This was the case when I dined at the Royal for a casual Thursday lunch. Everything sounded so average on the menu, I settled for a 200g sirloin which was basically because nothing else sounded appealing. And later when our food came out the salad that accompanied my steak and chips was bland, out of a packet and lacking dressing. Everyone else was not overly impressed with their meal from a Caeser salad to squid to Gnocchi. Bottom line is: Go to the Royal for beer, not food.
Seeking Perfection
End of a week of travellubg.... End of a week of traveling, just wanted a good honest meal. Got it here. Great selection if beers on tap. Entree was a crispy Confit duck on salad. Tasty, tasty entree. Spices worked well. Only let down was the sweet chilli sauce which tasted like masterfoods sauce bottle type. For the price......make your own. Main was a duo of lamb, loin and belly.
TimothyThe DedicatedOnanist
Could try harder. Great location with a fantastic range of beers on tap. Dining here can be a real hit and miss affair though. Dishes are of an acceptable standard but they are bordering on overpriced. The wait staff appear to be working tourists so don't have the right attitude. On one occasion, dining with a large group, the waitress, rather than coming around to my side of the table, sort of tossed my main to me from the other side of the table!
Brent Fleeton
Average Breakfast. For starters, which restaurant who opens for breakfast doesn't offer eggs benedict? The poached eggs were undercooked to the point where I couldn't eat anymore, the spinach was extremely salty. The only decent thing was the muffin and the bacon. Overpriced for average food.
Myjoe
Perfect Perth Day. Beautiful weather, great location and hoped it wouldn't end there; and it didn't. Greeted by friendly staff at the door. Friendly barman. Friendly waitress took our order and another delivered our meals. Even the staff collecting glasses/dishes were happy and friendly! The beer battered fish was beautiful and crispy with fresh, hand-made chips and a tasy coleslaw/salad. The mini burgers were tasty too and the shoestring fries a bit different but also delicious. The serving size was perfect; not a huge, bloating meal and not leaving you wanting something extra. Can't wait to go back to try some other items on the menu. <br/>(I've been here many times, eaten here a few, and consistently had this type of service, so well done to management and staff; wish more Perth establishments could follw your lead!)

Cool Start with a Hot Finish. On arriving at 12:14pm last Sunday we found many empty seats but all with reserved signs on them. We spoke to some staff who told us we could go to the bar but after we pushed they took our details in case a table was cancelled. As we ordered drinks in the bar from a not so happy to be employed bartender, only 5 minutes later, a table for our party of 3 1/2 (3 yr old) was found and we were swiftly seated and attended to. The stay lasted 4 hours and was one of the best experiences I have had in Perth at a F&B venue. I have been in international hospitality for 26 years in Canada, Australia and cruise ships and cringe when I go out most times in my home city, not necessarily due to the staff as they can only do what they are told or shown but lack of proper management. Well we experienced both in a very positive experience in server Molly who could not have been more accommodating, friendly and genuine in her service and care for our experience, the same can be said for Manager Chevy who stood out as the person in charge which is lacking in many establishments. The food was great, particularly the Salt and Pepper Squid which was very tender and there was no doubt it included Pepper. I will be back and yes in future I will make a booking, but sometimes the last minute plans are the best days out, leave some seats for us! Thank you Molly, Chevy and the Royal!

A royal experience. I dined along with m\y overseas guests at the royal last saturday evening, we had a large table as there was 12 of us. Our waiter was amazing i think his name was shannon he was super friendly and made our kids feel welcome. Our meals came out nice and quick even though the place was very busy, and everyone really had a wonderfull time. I had the fillet steak cooked, to perfection and my husband enjoyed the marinara pan (amazing). we managed to cart the kids off with grandpa and moved into the bar afterwards for cocktails. what a great night out

Won't be going back ever!. Was hoping to get a table at Toast for a Sunday brekkie, but they were packed, so went to try the Royal. We had a 20 minute wait for coffee, food took about 30 mins. They weren't even that busy!<br/>The brekkie menu was limited and only one menu item really looked any different from your average brekkie cafe. Yes, nice views, but wasn't impressed due to slow service.<br/>While we were eating had a Waitress come along to our table, and without a word plonked a 'Reserved' sign on our table (assume it was for lunch). We were quite annoyed at this poor service.<br/>With so many fabulous places in Perth for breakfast I definitely WON'T be going back to the Royal for anything!
Lyra Olivia
Worst Service Ever. I go to The Royal a lot for their weekly quiz night on a Monday. The venue is always busy, however I've never been impressed with their staff or the service. I've also been with friends for lunch on the weekend and the common theme to my visits is that the waiters like to look at the ground as they walk and like to hide.<br/><br/>A number of times I have had my empty plates left on my table for absolute ages...once I even got up, collected them myself and dumped them on the bar. I was quite riled at that point.<br/><br/>I also can't stand how the staff have no idea about their menu, speicals or specific meals. Things like specifically odering no anchovies and receiving them anyway. Also starting a bar tab which of course has to be credit card and then being asked if it's savings when I pay. Little annoying things which are pretty consistent.
Pris
Curse of the waterfront. Expect cafe type food - nothing outstanding but decent enough (Pricey too!) to accompany your drink with a view of the waterfront. Cakes and coffee - average, mocha and hot chocolate taste like nonsense but I'm a regular here for a pint and wedges. <br/><br/>Dress codes are not too strict as well so it's good for an impromptu outing.
Scotty
So far, so good. I see a lot of negative reviews, but we have been 5 times now and can't complain. Good food, didnt have to wait too long, staff very attentive (even on a very busy Sunday) and of course, a lovely view. So we will be going back. Oh, and fantastic Mojitos!

Won't go back... LOCATION-open & airy with cooling water sprays outside.<br/>SERVICE-I really felt like I had put the waitress out by even asking to book a table earlier in the day, she exuded many negatives, a frown, sarcastic smile & basically rude, not what you expect from someone in customer service..through out the coarse of the night she was not the only person to serve our table, we counted 5 members of staff in the end.<br/>FOOD-well unfortunately for them I'm a chef & have been for a long time..now some would say that makes me more critical(maybe)OR it as I see it, I should get what I pay for, the WHOLE experience that is.<br/>We choose the charcuterie to share $34 very average.<br/>I had the fillet steak $38($8 for extras)I asked for it blue & made a point of saying"please don't over cook it I really do like it blue, thanks" It came finally, medium, so it was sent back, I received another which was tough "arrr this isn't rocket science" I really couldn't be bothered to send it back the second time, so just chewed my heart out to the was near.<br/>My companion equally has a little disaster sitting in front of him in the form of a duck breast(asked for med/rare)it came out well done & so convincingly like it had been pre sliced & vat packed, heated & served(possibly microwave), it tasted like it too, terrible.<br/>So really for us the only plus to this whole visit was the wine.<br/>An expensive visit that left us feeling unsatisfied.<br/>Definitely won't be going back.
Food Groove
Don't bother. This used to be a regular haunt (3-4 years ago), but sadly no more, as it has consistently declined in quality of food and significantly increased in price.<br/><br/>Their steak dishes are now rivalling the prices of some of the best fine dining restaurants in Perth with nothing on their plates justifying even half that price range.<br/><br/>Don't even get me started on how stale their desserts are.<br/>Lemon meringue pie used to be a favourite of mine until I decided to have the last piece sitting in the display cabinet at the Royal. I couldn't even get through half of it, and that's saying something considering I am one of those people who will look at the dessert menu before the mains.<br/><br/>The only plus here is the sensational location, but that is nowhere near enough of a reason to pay another visit.
Littlerockmelody
Need to work on their time management. On a packed Sunday afternoon you may expect delays in your food arriving, but what you don't expect is half of your table to receive their meals after the other half have finished. While the food itself was ok, the poor time management left a bad taste in the mouth with half of the table feeling bad for eating in front of those yet to receive their meals and the other half anxiously awaiting their food.
Jason Horton
Great Outlook. I have been here a few times. It is relaxing and very laid back. The food is delivered all together (which is a plus) when dining as a group. The wine list is worth the read and very comprehensive. I particularly liked the Risotto. The hardest thing was going back to work after work.
Tao88
Nice view shame about everything else.. In a nut shell, I wish I had never been to the Royal.<br/>The food was like week old tastless leftovers and over priced for what it was. The service terrible, either non-existant, or when eventually it did appear, one of the back packers masquerading as service staff, spilt the drink over my legs and the table while reaching across to get to my partner.<br/>Never again, never again, never again !<br/>Try Toast down the way for the same view.
Antony
Very easy, due to having a great view, great location and always get a table. But our recent breakfast was very average. Pancakes expensive and drowned in maple syrup, missing fruit or something to make up the money. Service was good though, Probably just great for a beer after work.

I give up!. I live in the area so I have been to the Royal a couple of dozen times. It is a fantastic location. It does get quite noisy inside so I prefer to eat outside but they allow smoking at one end which inevitably drifts past. It is a pretty hit and miss place food and service wise. They seem to have a large turnover of staff relying heavily on the foreign back packer and student market. Sometime you get a happy, efficient wait person, mostly you get an inattentive, poorly motivated person who doesn't know the menu. The food too is hit and miss. The portions are pretty good, the prices are restaurant prices for pub food and I have had wilting and browning lettuce in my salads more often than I care to remember. It is convenient because they are always open when other places in the area are closed, but I come away disappointed about the food or service too often. And you can't be in a hurry because it can take forever to get served and even longer to actually get your meal. But the last straw for me today was when they refused to allow me to 'doggy bag' half a dozen battered king prawns. At first I was told by the wait person that it was against health regulations. I responded that I have 'doggie bagged' in some of the finest restaurants in Perth so that can't be true. After discussion with the 'supervisor' it transpired that it was a policy which they choose to follow, not a health regulation. I think if 'doggy bags' are good enough for Neil Perry and Gordan Ramsay, or your local Chinese Restaurant, the Royal should be able to do it. After putting up with regular poor service and ordinary, but not inexpensive food, this 'policy' was the last straw for me. But you never know, the day you go might be one of the good ones.
Ken
Poor excuse for a restaurant!. This place should be called the servant! because you may as well serve yourself. Save your money folks and go somewhere else!!!

So So. We went on a Saturday night and had booked a table inside (but as close to the water as possible) for an 8pm sitting. Being humid we wanted the A/C but we also wanted the best view possible. To our dissapointment we were seated 3 tables back from the window (despite a table being vacant in the window, which wasn't made up). Meals were good, but we found the entree sizes to be very large and then couldn't finish our mains. Some of entrees should be tagged to share. Service was ok although at time confusing as 3 different waitstaff served us and they didn't seem to be talking (like water glasses being taken away when we had ordered a bottle of water to finish off). What annoyed us most is that a table of walk-ins were seated in the window about 15mins after we arrived. Clearly booking here does not get you the better location. Maybe try the earlier sitting?
TimTam
Queen TimTam. TimTam always feels very much at home here. Food is always good and the staff are very friendly. Overlooking the Swan river too, there are few better restaurant locations in Perth.

I went 2 the Royal on The Waterfront on the 17rh January 2011 4 my husband's birthday with our 2 children Jacob + Annabelle + I asked my husband 2 bring his friend Greg along 2 join us, he's a local. The service was impeccable, the food was delicious, I was liking my lips after I'd had the oysters kilpatrick, I wanted more, the waitress was helpful + attentive 2 us. She told us there was a half an hour wait on the mains. The drinks were flowing, the ambience was perfect. I loved my main meal was a tassie barramundi with chips + a light + tasty salad with a gorgeous dressing not 2 overpowering. My husband Bruce + I have been here on more than 10 occasions 4 different functions and we've never been disappointed, brung ur friends, bring every1. The best food, best service, best ambience. The best restaurant/bar in East Perth. Totally recommend it.
Happysilver7
Overpriced blandness. Nice location but there is only so much you can charge for being next to the water. Shabby decor, way too loud inside when it's busy. Steak sandwich consisted of a piece of meat between to bits of un-toasted white bread and salad was a pile of yellowing iceberg lettuce ($22). Definitely not worth the money. Probably won't go again.
Craney
Platinum prices for sub standard pub grub. Taking a simple office lunch. A steak sandwich on for $20.00 is not unheard of - but a blade of steak with lettuce, tomato and sauce - in between two slices of commercial bread loaf? I have had better value at Bunnings on a Saturday morning.

Watch the sun. Had lunch here a few weeks ago, asked for and got an outside table. Unfortunately it was the only one of the outside tables that wasn't shaded from the sun. There was a large gap between the shade clothes that gradually exposed our table to the full sun (see photos). It was about a 30 degree day. .We were told that nothing could be done as it was busy, as it was getting very uncomfortable by about 1.30pm I was going to ask for our food to be served take-away so we could take it home. After we kicked up a bit of a fuss they pushed 2 tables together closer to the restaurant but still outside and it was quite pleasant. The food was OK, it met expectations.<br/>There was a really nice waiter from Brazil and a nice at times amusingly abrupt, waitress from Slovakia. Gotta love the multicultural dining experience in Perth.<br/>What's surprising is that there aren't more places open for lunch in the area, given that the Royal is always packed..

Sat night. Visited a couple of weeks ago for a dinner with 6 other friends, the White Rabbit on tap was a welcoming sight itself and very nice too I may add ;o)) Entrees had the charcuterie and tasting plates all to share which were generally good with a couple of hit and miss items on there...main course of plantagenet pork rib, nicely cooked, presentation a bit sloppy but it's a pub so everything did what it said on the tin! Wouldn't rush to go back but would go again if in the area.........the staff dismantling the restaurant around us at 10.30 (setting up for sunday obviously) was a little unwelcoming but the service was attentive and fast all night.....
The Pescatarian
Good spot for a drink. I really like this place for a drink after work. It's relaxed, it's on the water and there are usually a few people wandering around to watch - a boat or two adds to the view. After a few wines, we often end up ordering here just out of convenience, despite feeling like we're playing blackjack at the casino and the casino will inevitably beat us. Last week the fish dishes were great, the steak was mediocre and the waitress was in a bad mood. There's an evil draught inside so on a cold evening BYO rug.

Charming location, good menu and friendly staff, I'll be back.

Food is great, view very nice... A great spot, too popular some nights, I don't like the holding your credit card option if you are dining outside.<br/><br/>Very popular with the tourist set who like to "perch".<br/>I enjoyed the varied modern tasting plate, the wine choices and the beef main, have had wonderful service every time I have had dinner here. It's a great spot, best to book a table.
Gee
Salty and not delicious. After waiting over an hour for our meals I was less then impressed. <br/><br/>I ordered the Chicken & Mushroom Tortiglioni - a few others dining with me had ordered the same meal. Mine was half the size compared to their meals. Meal was extremely salty - tasted like it was a stir through pasta sauce. <br/><br/>Waitress was extremely rude also. <br/><br/>Will not return.
Stu
By all means have a drink but avoid the menu at all costs. I have given up as I was constantly dissatisfied with over priced, poorly prepared, ordinary food
Zkaizen
The place has a great location-on the waterfront. Unfortunately the food was ordinary. The turkey shnitzel was dry and salty, the plum pudding was dry and the chowder was salty. Staff were not a happy bunch, they should smile more.
Spoonmaster
Location location. Great waterside spot, good decent sized outdoor area, a good example of whats needed in the centre of Perth if anything ever gets done with the foreshore....
Peter
Love this place, really nice meals, really sizeable servings, excellent food.
Hgreen
Great atmosphere. The location of this place really contributes to a great dining experience... We've been here a few times and the service has always been good, plus the food nice. Being a pub/restaurant the choice of beers is also excellent.
Flossy Two-shoes
Been there several times and enjoyed each time. The Cajun chicken salad and the spaghetti marinara are both very enjoyable. Great outside area in summer!
Food And Wine Ombudsman
In the not too distant past some restaurateurs in Perth running places with great vistas seemed to think the view was all it took and didn’t put much effort into ensuring the food component lived up to location. Thankfully those who currently run the Royal don’t adopt that attitude and have made concerted efforts to turn out good plates of food and a nice selection of drinks to go with the fabulous surrounds.
Pubreview.com.au
The crowd was mostly an older, more sophisticated type than you would normally find in a typical Perth pub, but not to the extent that it makes you feel uncomfortable, it's definitely not a snobby atmosphere and I think it's what The Royal are aiming for<br/>
Kitstar
The wait staff were very attentive and regularly enquired whether we were enjoying our meals, the atmosphere was great for a Wednesday night and I just love the location. I was pleasantly surprised and would love to try some of the other dishes there sometime.<br/><br/>

All in all it was an enjoyable lunch from a place that I always can expect such a thing. No wow factor, but good honest food that has me coming back a few times each year.

The views are lovely, looking out over the water. Hopefully next time we could take the boat and stop off for a spot of lunch. Either way, we’re going back.

...after dining there I have to say that they are indifferent. There just aren’t enough inspiring dishes for me.
Perth Munchkin
We were in a delightful spot just inside the main bar area. We perched and chatted and flicked through a copy of the Sunday Times that was just near our table and sipped our drinks and before we knew it our food arrived. I loved the look of the pizza. A very generous half plank with ample toppings! Plenty of pieces of spicy chorizo, chunky mushroom, a colorful smattering of spinach and a decorative swirl of bbq sauce. It was a nice contrast, the spice of the chorizo and the sweetness from the sauce. The base was light and crispy and the all together combination was just plain yum. Totally happy with my choice.
Shaun
While a nice selection on the menu and a great venue with excellent views, the meals are quite disappointing for pub food. Comparable places offer more and are far tastier and delivered much quicker. The positives were the selection of cakes and cheesecakes which were very nice.
Perth Girl About Town
Recently all the weekends have been sensationally sunny and on one particular Sunday, my friend K and I wanted to go somewhere for a drink where we could sit in the sun and have a few cocktails. We decided on the Royal in East Perth as it is on the water

An icon of East Perth, the brasserie takes prime position on Claisebrook Cove. Beneath the umbrellas and fairy lights, beautiful people lounge and the buzz resonates over the water.
