Review Saowanee's Place - Perth

J R
New decor but the food and service are the same. I have been coming here for years and it is still the best Thai food in Perth. The staff here are always friendly and attentive. Highly recommended!
Samantha Taylor
My family has been eating here for years! We don’t live close - it’s a 45 minute drive - but we always eat here to celebrate every wedding anniversary and family member birthday. The food is well worth the drive! So we were so sad when they closed for renovations last year! But the good news is they’re open again! And the new decor is awesome! So bright and welcoming. And the food and prices are just as fantastic as they always were! The staff are genuine and friendly - they always remember us. Honestly, if you love authentic Thai food you HAVE to check this place out!

Had the most amazing Thai food in Perth. Only wish we had bigger stomachs - great food, wonderful portions , beautiful service. The ambience is clean and refreshing , and so inviting.
Kunal Khambhayta
Food was good. Also, the staff here was too friendly. They reserved a table for us for the time we requested. Ample of parking space available so that isn’t an issue either. Staff understands your special requests and gets the food prepared as you request.
Jasmine Faye
As a thai, i feel that the food isn't as authentic as what i had in thailand. Vermicelli salad and tomyam soup was good but the coconut milk taste is a little too strong. Overall, good experience here.

Went there for dinner with my wife and my parents. The dishes ordered were Papaya Salad, Stir Fried Chicken and Red Beef Curry All of it tasted good

Our favourite Thai restaurant in Perth. Came here for the first time 7 years ago and fell in love with their Pad Thai. I think it is the best I have ever had and I have come back for it many many times, it is just consistently great. My partner and I have also tried all their curries through out the years and they are all amazing. The food is definitely best when dining in but take away has been very good, too. The staff is super friendly and helpful with dietary requirements. I am already looking forward to our next visit. I can just highly recommend going there in general.

Enjoyed a delicious dinner at Saowanee's Place Thai Restaurant. The green curry chicken and soft shell crab were stand outs.

It The most delicious Thai food EVER.....!

Not a good experience. Have tries so many Thai food place in Perth or other cities in Australia, this is the place serves smallest size of dishes and EVEN half of it is raw carrot - they call it “decoration”. I’m confused - am I paying for the food or decoration in this restaurant?!
Rachel Xie
So disappointed, flavour is just average, but price is much more over priced comparing with the size of dishes. Also half of the dishes is decorations. If you are ordering meat, be prepare only 1/3 is meat, the rest are carrots and few other vegetables. Will NEVER come again
JuYeethejoey
Beautiful decor and attentive staffs. We had tomyum soup, chilli and basil chicken, red duck curry, pawpaw salad, green curry chic and mango sticky rice. Be sure to try their soft shell crab too!

Having lived in Thailand for over 10 years, we enjoy good Thai food. We booked Saowanee's Place for my husband's 50th. Beau arranged a superb banquet which the guests raved. Some highlights were the Green Curry, Thai Basil Beef and Cashew Nut Chicken. The staff and management were friendly, efficient and professional.
Aidan
Having being recommended Saowanee's by friends, we decided to try this restaurant for dinner. We ordered a mixture of dishes including the red and green curries and pad thai. All dishes were full of flavour and great tasting. The best part is that we did not have to wait very long to receive our food.

Staff are welcoming and prices are reasonable.

We have wanted to try this Thai restaurant for awhile now, and we weren't disappointed when we did.
Chosen dishes were authentic, fresh and tasty and sizing was good. We thoroughly enjoyed the Belly Pork Kylan Salad which is one of the restaurant's signature dishes.
Next Stop: Bangkok!

We have eaten here several times because the food is great. However, the service has been average each time. This time it was appalling. Nothing was offered to our table and we constantly had to try and get someone's attention to even order food ( for which we had to get someone's attention after 50min of waiting to get someone). In addition, there was an obnoxious patron who was screaming/yelling in the restaurant, which was disturbing other patrons meals but staff did nothing about this. We were sadly disappointed by our dinner last night as we have told our family it was a great place; we still had a good night because of the company rather than location.
Samantha
This place used to be amazing. We got takeaway. The starters were Hollywood, absolutely delicious spring rolls and satay chicken. The mains were such a let down. The currys were average, pretty bland but also too sweet. This used to be the best Thai in perth but now there are better places to go.
Michael
Awesome food. Reasonable prices. Attentive staff. Big selection of food on their menu. One of my faves for Thai right now. Try the crispy pork belly on fried kailan. Absolutely gorgeous!

This little Thai restaurant is just the sort of place that you can imagine sitting down in a cosy dining area served with good quality meal. I would recommend booking in advance to avoid being caught without a table for a big group.

The meals come with good portion size, served with white rice. Six dishes were just nice for a 6 pax table. The Tamarind Fish had a nice tang from the sauce. The Massaman curry with beef has a very nutty taste and not too spicy. There wasn't a drop of curry left when we were finished with our rice. The Seafood Tom Yam was has that sourness that just hit the right spot. The beef salad has that kind of nice wholesome presentation and taste. A dinner at a Thai restaurant is not complete without a Pad Thai dish, and the vegetarian Pad Thai dish that we ordered was able to give us that satisfaction with its sweet-ish taste. Last but not least, we had our green curry with chicken and bamboo shoots. I personally find it slightly too spicy for me, but that didn't stop me from drenching my rice with it and enjoying it.

I could never fault this place and it's such a nice place to enjoy a hearty meal. This restaurant has also recently won the 2016 Thai Select Certification awarded by the Royal Thai government upon their recent visit, more reason to give this restaurant a try!
I keep forgetting to review this place because the food has always left me speechless and satisfied.

Food service is very fast and doesn't compromise on flavour, colour and size. The foods are flavoursome with all the necessary spices, coconut milk, meats, vegetables and garnishes to ensure the presentation meets authentic Thai cuisine.

I have to agree that this is the best Thai restaurant in Perth!
Anna Courtney
Our local Thai restaurant and we are never disappointed. Always a beautiful meal, great service and a fantastic wine list. Also good for take away.
Jess Grady
This is 100% the best Thai in Perth, if not Aus! Each time we are not let down, food is of a really high standard and soooo good. Definite faves are panang curry & chicken pad see ew. Staff are super friendly and wait time for take away is only ever around 20 mins. Closed Tuesdays.
Believeinyourself
Every dish we tried was tasty, from soups, stir fried, curries and salads. It's not gourmet and the ambience isn't flashy but it's solid flavoursome authentic Thai flavours and service with a smile. A lot of options for vegans and vegetarians too.
Princess Zelda
Awesome Thai food but comes with a price. Ive been here so many times and some of my favorite dishes are the Tom Yum and Larb gai. Prices are off putting to me , although I enjoyed dining here over the years I am not convinced that they are the best in Thai food and value for money.
PerthfectBreakfast
Service was quick and efficient on a busy Friday night. Started with prawn crackers and spring rolls which were not bad.

Mains we ordered:
Beef massaman curry
Chicken panang curry
Pork green curry
Roast duck red curry
Larb gai
Chicken pad Thai
Crispy pork belly salad with fried kailan
Steam rice

All the curries were amazing, the beef massaman was particularly outstanding. The beef was melt-in-yo-mouth tender and the sauce was rich and full of flavour. The other 3 curries tasted pretty similar but they were all really nice.

Pad Thai was my least fave dish and I wouldn't order their version again. Definitely not the best version I've had.

Of the two salads we ordered the crispy pork belly salad was the better. We were most surprised/delighted to find the veggies were actually battered and deep fried. BEST SALAD EVEEERRRRRRRR! Haha. A tad more dressing wouldve been good though. Larb gai was OK..
More marinated chicken mince than salad but the dressing was well balances and refreshing.

Would most definitely visit again!

The food is amazing! Rich flavours, authentic dishes and generous servings. Lovely, friendly and prompt service. My favourite Thai restaurant in Perth! Worth the accolades.

Not the best and not that bad, just average Thai food. If you have a craving with Thai food can have a try here. Taste fusion......Thai and OZ mixture flavour. Service and prices OK.
Perth Foodaholic
This place is a little gem and is one of my favourite Thai places to go. The owners are lovely and the food here is consistent, delicious and oh so amazing. The dishes are packed full of flavour and they are quite generous with their servings. Rice is unlimited which is great (I have a pet peeve for places that charge a ridiculous amount for a small bowl of rice when it is so cheap to buy/make). They have some real stand out dishes which other Thai places can’t seem to compete with. This is the place to go to get my Thai fix!
Allis Simpson
Our favourite restaurant in Perth for years. Went again last night. Food was great. Duck red curry. Massaman curry. Green curry. Pad Thai and spring rolls. Fish cakes and prawn crackers for entree. Bill was $351 a bit more expensive than used to be. OK until I noticed they had charged us $18 for rice. WTF I feel they are price gouging. Seriously feel ripped off just for that. Will try other Thai restaurants now. See ya Saowanee it's been a pleasure but it's over.

This is NOT the best Thai in Perth as it states on the sign out the front...in fact I'd say it is the worst I have had in the 10 months that I have lived in this city. Never again.@
FoodBean
Good food, good service. The couple we went with knew the owners so that may have helped on the service side - couldn't fault it. The waitress was from Chiang Mai, one of our favourite food places in the world. We shared Pad Prik, Gang Panang, Chilli and Basil Stir Fry (Beef), Deep Fried Whole Fish in Tamarind Sauce and Paw Paw Salad. All lovely. The Deep Fried Fish was my favourite. We had some of their Balachaung (shredded dried shrimp with chilli and stuff), which was so good we bought a couple of jars to go.
Imadina
Dined in to try since it claims to be the "best thai restaurant in perth". Had massaman beef, pineapple prawn fried rice and roti. Massaman beef so bland and bitter, potato was hard and tasted like newly boiled. The manager/owner overcharged me for another dish which we didn't order. When I told him about the massaman beef being not so good, he just gave me an arrogant look and said he will check on it. The serving portions was stingy for the steep price. Have tried a lot of Thai restos around but this was definitely the worst...not "the best" as they claimed.
Urban Farmer
Great Thai Food. Went there last night before a gig at the Rosemount. Good service, fast. Generous serves for Thai. I had tom yum soup for entree and Pad Thai for main. My friend had chicken satay for entree and thai omlette and stirfry for main. Authentic flavours. Licenced. good explanatory menu if you are not familiar with thai Cuisine.

Saowanee's was one of my favourite places until tonight when I was turned away as a 'single'. My friends and I have often eaten here (together) but we will be looking for other places who understand that even single people like good food. What a shame for this place to not appreciate this

The review below is completely ridiculous and wrong. Half of it doesnt even make sense and isnt spelt correctly. I eat at Saowanees on a weekly basis and it never lets me down. It was awarded best thai restaurant in Perth for a reason.

Love it

-----21 Apr, 2015-----

Amazing. The review below is completely ridiculous and wrong.. Appalling. Having dined here a few times over the past years, we were disgusted with our meal there last night. From the moment our we sat our experience was hideous, starting with the intense urine smell in the corner table. There is hardly Thai about the food we ate - all the entrees are deep-fried and Chinese-style, apart from the fish cakes and possible chicken sate sticks. The dipping sauce was nothing but white vinegar and sugar - no Thai flavours in a cuisine that prides itself on it's sauces. For mains we had a green chicken curry which was nothing other than a bowl of coconut milk, some green curry paste and some chicken. Missing in action were fish sauce, thai basil and lime leaves. Also a mussaman beef which was similarly missing stuff, like potatoes, star anise and cinnamon flavours in a bowl of coconut milk. this curre is supposed to be an almost dry curry. We also had pork belly and gai lan, the latter of which had been deep fried in batter - disgusting!! Although our tamarind fish had a nice sauce, sadly there were only little bits of fish and lots of batter.
All in all, the only positive thing was the steamed rice. A meal which lacked all of the zing and flavours that we love about Thai food. We certainly won't be going back and will discourage all our friends from the risk of eating there.

Non wonder it's won so many awards.... Brilliant authentic Thai like I've not tasted before in Perth with an amazing range of dishes. Must do for all you Thai lovers out there :-)
Just_aideen
Always top class!. We have been going to saowanees for over two years and after another amazing meal tonight I thought it was time to give them a good review!
The staff are quiet and there to do their job, not to be chatty! However they are always polite and the service is prompt.
We don't go there for the staff or the de or or the ambience...we got there for the food! It is the closest thing to authentic Thai food we have found since arriving in Perth. We have tried many others but none have ever compared to saowanees!
The panama curry is outstanding, the spring rolls and wontons on the starter menu are delicious and the stir fries are always so fresh and perfectly cooked.
Well down to Robert and his wife for consistently providing excellent food!
Food Of Perth
I don't know about "best Thai in Perth". Saowanees Place has won numerous awards. With so many awards, I wanted to check out what all the fuss was about!

We arrived at the restaurant at 5pm, we didn't make a reservation as I felt it would be fine during the week. The lady serving us seemed annoyed by this and I felt as though it was a hassle for her to check the reservation book?? Anyway, we got a table and given menu's.

We shared an entree of spring rolls and they were definitely the best we have ever eaten!
Served hot and fresh with real sweet chili sauce - not the bottled type you buy from Woolworths.

The Pad Thai with chicken was not greasy/oily like most I have tried. It is packed with flavour and is generous in size.

The Green Curry was hot and spicy, unfortunately not the best we have had (according to my husband, it comes third on the list) but was still a tasty authentic Thai curry.

I would come back for the Pad Thai and Spring rolls but take away only. The unfriendly and rude service from the first waitress we had put me off.

Saowanee's Place - superb food. Went to Saowanee's Place for dinner last night with friends. The company was excellent, the wine flowed freely and the food was just superb- soft shell crabs, prawn kailan, mango salad, massaman curry, red duck curry and the fish were the best we've had in Perth. Will be going there again next week for a birthday.
Solidice
So good, best thai in Perth.. You need to try everything on the menu at least once. So many flavours, can't stop going back. Have only tried take-away but have been very impressed.
Mimmi
Rubbish! Old, run down and worst of all is the food. I can make better thai at home using packet mixes! Pad thai reaked of good ol tomatoe sauce. Tofu was dry and over cooked. All food doesn't come at once. Stir fry was dry too!
Moodycow
Not authentic Thai. Restaurant dated and rather cramped, the service was very good, prices reasonable but the food was a disappointment. Had Thai fish cakes they were completely tasteless, Pad Thai can only be described as sticky wet gloop and then had Ginger and Chilli fish stirfry. But was not what I expected,it was battered deep fried pieces of fish on a bed of completely raw vegetables. I expect a stirfry to have been cooked in a wok. Won't be going back here again.

A very satisfying dinner on a night when our stomachs were rumbling with hunger. Fish cakes, tom yum saowanees and pla rad prik
Wendy
You'll love it. Best thai food ever, fantastic menu and prices are very reasonable.
can't say enough good things about Saowanee's. We go every chance we can.
Very friendly staff also

Best Thai Green Curry!. My favourite place for Friday lunch, great lunch specials and quick service
Natbutler
Our night out. We went to this thai restaurant excited thinking this to be a taste sensation, well what a disappiontment. We ordered entree first then soup then main, we got our main first.we got them to bring our food out in order and of course my main was cold and to top it off the rice we ordered did not arrive the reason was they have new staff on?the food was very ordinary like any westernised thai restaurant. When we paid the bill the owner ask us if we would vote for their restaurant to be the best in perth, what a joke, rod and Nat.
FoodFairy
Just has dinner on the veranda it was the perfect way to end a Sunday afternoon. Highly recommend this place!
Alya Stojceski
Loved the food delicious like always BUT the staff service is terrible waitress are very rude and unfriendly and unpolite
RuthN
Had the deep fried fish curry, delicious!
Benjamin Johnson
Service was poor and the last dish came out really late, so everyone had finished eating except me, there was no communication to let us know and we had to keep waving down the waitresses. Food was decent but there are better Thai restaurants in Perth to save your money on that are efficient (and food much better ! )
Tatiana Santos
Best Thai so far. I've been trying a lot of Thai restaurants in Perth and this one is my favorite so far. I couldn't find any green curry better than the one is served here .Other dishes that are also good are drunken noodles and paw paw salad. I am a regular customer and I can say the service, sometimes, is very poor. However, I always come back for the food.
Eatwithhendri
Mix between good and bad. The phuket hokkien noodle was superb, padthai was not bad but i could find better ones elsewhere, the biggest downfall was the panang curry. it's watery and lack of flavor. i would rate 7 out of 10.
Little Food Adventures
Very Good. Decent service and price isn't too bad
Nice atmosphere and food comes out quite fast
Amazing Red Curry and tom yum soup is good too
Definitely coming back !
Da Puppie
.. =(. Was not too impress unfortunately.
The fish cake was nice but that was it. I can only comment on what I order;
The Green Apple salad was very salty; the veg Pad Thai was very average and the sauce from the Red Curry Duck .. for the price of what was paid - was ordinary.
I had high hopes but for the food was not worth the crazy price paid..

PERTH ASIAN FOOD & CULTURE GROUP. Unfortunately I did not have a great experiance from this restaurant, including the other 8 guest's, it started upon entry with not so welcoming introductions for my seeing eye dog.

The booking had been made 2 weeks earlier for 6 to 10 people, and as i did not confirm the booking i guess the table was made for 6.
As a host for these events, it is very hard to be definate for numbers, as most rsvp, but sometimes there are mishaps or extra's tag of for their experiane's.

On arrival, i was told there were only enough seats for 6, although 2 sat empty in the takeaway area. So as 4 people turned up together to join our group, and they all could be seated, they decided to leave. We were told the restaurant was fully booked, and it did seem that way very busy. I was told about 12 staff in the kitchen. And takeways were very busy too.

The price was ok, for the amount of food ordered, And the staff were very helpfull, For me personally I am thinking maybe i did not enjoy this restaurant because of the welcome, and the turned away guest's,
I won't return or sell this to anyone as a good place, plenty of other nice thai place's in perth - but that's just me... event host of
PERTH ASIAN FOOD AND CULTURE GROUP
www.meetup.com/asianfoodinperth

P's I have been told that this is a working dog friendly place now, but not for Arnold and myself.
Elise
Delicious thai. My partner and I have been here two or three times and I always order the chicken wonton soup because its delicious!

Food: 4/5 (great dish options - I love the chicken wonton soup and my partner likes the different meat dishes)
Price: 4/5 (decent prices for Perth + BYOB)
Service: 3/5 (encountered some very friendly staff as well as a one very unfriendly and unhelpful waitress)
Atmosphere: 4/5 (very nice atmosphere, relaxed)
ACLovesEats
Authentic Thai food. Do yourself a favour, great food and service at a reasonable price. Will not disappoint!
Rini
Love this place!. Great service, great food and lovely staff. Went with a big group of friends and had a wonderful time. Will definitely be going back!

Soft shell crab addiction!!. I must say, this place is a winner!!! :)
Jojifrey
Hmm. Seriously... they got an award for this restaurant?

Their menus taste nothing like an authentic thai food, EXCEPT the paw paw salad... that is the only menu I like.

Anyways, they are overpriced, not spicy enough, and took so long to serve.
Perth Foody
Average. Have I gone to the same place everyone was raving about? Found the food average and the staff grumpy. When we arrived they were going to seat us right near the entry door to the restaurant, and on a freezing cold night we encountered a problem when we asked if we could not sit near the door and be subjected to gusts of cold air. That put us off to a bad start with the staff who were then grumpy and abrupt at each encounter to follow. We ordered the crumbed fish balls for entree that came out chewy and rubbery (did not taste like fish at all). Then ginger chicken and dry curry were bland and not tasty. Won't be going there again
Rachel
Great food nice & fresh and fabulous service, can't wait to come back
Eloise Rosenstein
Genuinely the best Thai in Perth. The sign out the front doesn't lie. I've been going here for years and I can't get enough. Highly recommend the macadamia nut stir fry! Also their wine list has a great selection of WA wines, at unbelievable prices compared to most other restaurants. It's BYO but there is honestly no need :D
Tim Margieson
Awesome food terrible service. I've spent quite a bit of time in Thailand and the reason I go back is the place puts Perth to shame when it come to service. Clearly the owners should take their staff back there so they can see how it's done.
Lauren Jane
Fantastic!!!! Saowanees Place is fantastic!! The garlic pepper squid is yummmmmy as is the rest of their lovely food!
Lisa Fini
Not the same. Went back after having a fabulous time a few months ago. Had the banquet again, but quality and portions were not the same. Wont be going again.

-----14 Feb, 2012-----

Excellent. Group of 12 last night had banquet #2. Food was fresh and tasty and plentiful. Massaman curry and prawn salad were stand out dishes. Great for a large group.
Catherine Livingston
Delicious food, atrocious service! Waited about 30 mins before a waitress came to us, had to find our own table to sit on and open our own wine. She was rude and very unfriendly, however the saving grace was the food. Really delicious and couldn't stop til we had finished it all. The massaman curry is excellent, as well as the seafood Ree curry.
Heather
Love this place!. All that needs to be said here is that this has to be the best thai food in Perth. I am never disapointed. I can recommend the Tom Yum Saowanees style with coconut milk. Amazing! Cute little restaurant which is always busy too.
Rossella Rossi
We always got a great service and food Is always excellent is taste. Try tamarind prawns, massaman curry and red duck curry.
Brett Baile
Not the most authentic I've had but not too bad food was nice however it's byo wine only not beer. The larb chicken salad was good, however my Tom yum soup had no lemongrass which I found odd none the less had the right flavors worth a try!!
Holly Doll
Oh my goodness. I have never had a Tom yum goong with so many prawns :) there must have been about 10 of them. I did get the large serving. So I knew I would have more than most serving. But this was impressive. And the soup. Delish!!!! I will be coming back for sure!!!
Ronnie
Terriic thai. Had heard mixed reviews so went to find out for myself.sat outside as it was a nice evening.the staff were nice.food arrived quickly, vegies where fresh, red curry was good.a nice place in all....8/10

If this is the best Thai I'd hate to try the worst. Completely disappointing and not worth the effort. I feel cheated and ripped off. You know the place is bad when you spend most of the night talking about where you'd rather be eating instead.

Absolutely terrible service. A couple of times we weren't sure if what we asked for was understood, or maybe they didn't hear us?

Dinner started off promising as we were sat down and given water and prawn crackers. Usually a sign of a good restaurant. It was all down hill from there. It took about half an hour to get spring rolls to the table. Then, when ordering mains, 2 of us at the table were listened to, and then the waitress grabbed all the menus and completely ignored the 3rd person at our table. We had to call her back to get his order in.
With everything that was placed on the table, we got grunting and grumpy looks for free. What a bonus.
The food was average. Definitely not the best Thai in Perth. No mix and balance of flavours like most Thai food. We got a ginger stir fry which was pretty much just that. Ginger and stirfry. I think there was some pork in it somewhere. The same happened with our chilli chicken salad. All we could tast was Chilli. We also got a red curry, which was the best dish of all, but far from anything to rave about. No spice, no flavour like red curry should have. And the beef was chewy and tough. The dishes were on small plates, whiched looked quite pretty, but half the plate is taken up by swirly carrot strands and cabbage and lettuce. Sure, this is good if the food is not to share, but considering on the menu it states that Thai food is traditionally a shared meal, there should be more than enough to go around.
Then, as we were leaving, the greatest disappointment came for the night. $120 for 3 people. That's $40 each! Such a rip off considering that the dishes are quite small, and the service is leaves everything to be desired... and I could have gone someone suburban and got more tastier food, with friendly and efficient service for maybe $20 at most per person.

Complete surprise when we all thought that it would come to a max of $70 - $80. Can't say enough how this was totally not worth how much it cost, and how terribly overpriced their dishes are.
Redwine
Good food but terrible service. I have been to this Thai restaurant a few times, and really do recommend the, satay sticks, Yellow curry, Massaman curry and the Saowanee's style Tom Yum.

The service however is absolutely terrible, I asked the waitress for a drink then changed my mind and asked if they had hot tea, and she just stared at me blankly and I repeated my request she ignored me and asked for the next persons order. I ended up getting tea, but I had no idea what I was going to get!

They have ALWAYS added extra things onto our bill as well, which is hard to decipher because it's written in Thai. Make sure you manually add it up before going to pay.

I have resorted to only getting take away food as I just can't stand the horrible service.
MRH
Disappointing. Based on these reviews we decided to try this restaurant only to be very disappointed with the quality of the food and possibly the worst pad Thai I have ever tried. There are better options in Perth.
Rebekah Prosser
Was absolutely delightful, reasonably priced, great service! We will definitely be back. Great menu - red curry was close to the best I've ever eaten. A great meal.
Mr Fussy
I had the temerity once to go here by myself and was completely ignored. I mean, completely ignored to the point that they showed people behind me to a table. I was so taken aback I was dumbstruck.
Kelly Belly
Is this place going downhill?. Had take away from Saowanee's this week, and have to question - what the hell is going on in their kitchen?

Thai beef salad was not spicy. Basil chicken was flavourless. Not up to their usual standard.

-----30 Jan, 2011-----

Thai-riffic. In a category that these days is know more for bad Thai restaurant names (Thai Me Kangaroo Down Sport was a winner) than authentic Thai food, this place pulls the pants down of pretty much every Thai eatery in Perth.

No skimping on the chilli for soft Western palates, combined with a wonderful balance of the classic hot, sour, sweet and salty Thai flavours. This is a regular take-out place for me, and for good reason.

Papaya salad, larb gai and massaman are stand outs.

For once I agree with the boasttful sign out front. This IS the best Thai in Perth.
Viennah
Appalling service. The food was average and the service was so poor, we had to first put our hands up (like primary school students) just so we could order drinks. We weren't asked what we wanted to order, only half of the table got to order before the waitress just walked off! This rudeness by the staff was to continue through the entire evening.
We then waited around thirty minutes to order our meals, but as no one would serve us - we had to put our hands up again.
When that didn't work we CALLED THE RESTAURANT and requested some service.
They then had the nerve to tell my boyfriend off for having his own cider and advised that it would cost $4.50 corkage. - If they hadn't have walked off on him he could have ordered, and if they hadn't of taken 40 minutes to take our meal order he wouldn't have had to open a drink we brought in case it was BYO.

Eventually, entrees were brought out. At one stage, they even took my plate whilst I was still eating off it!

After a while we received our mains - the food was mediocore, we then faced the wait and soreness from our arms (as we had to raise them again) for our dessert. Our dessert was a fruit platter that consisted of clearly tinned fruit.

We also had to clear our own table....

On the plus side, they did let us split the bill.

Anyone who is raving about this place has clearly never left Perth - they seem to be used to the average food that could be made at home and the non existent service.
Trust Me
If you can't go to Thai Corner - Come here!. When I miss my mums Thai cooking I come here. It's casual, authentic, value for money, good service and byo.

I love the pineapple fried rice, creamy tom yum and omelettes.

It's popular amongst people I know and I always recommend it!

Need to go back again. I haven't been to Saowanee's Place for a couple of years now. But I found their curries to be very tasty. The only curry I would recommend to stay away from is the duck red curry, not because it's bad... but their other menu selections are much better.

Happy belly!. First of all, Saowanee's Place is awesome because it opens on Monday night! Searching for food in Perth on a Monday night can be a disappointing and fruitless struggle... so thankyou Saowanee for just being open!

We ordered spring rolls for entree, prawn pad thai, basil something-or-another fish, a vegetable and tofu red curry and steam rice. Between four people this was more than enough, and came out to a reasonable $23 pp.

As a recent convert to the joys of capsaicin I was glad that the chef/s were generous with their use of chilli in the basil/fish dish. All of the dishes had a real punch to them and I'd hazard a guess that they are more authentic than most thai food you'd find in this city.

If you put a bowl of Saowanee's Pad Thai in a ring with Hans Cafe Noodles, Saowanee's Pad Thai would kick Hans Noodles' ass. Actually, Hans Noodles would be so nervous of the sight of Saowanee's Pad Thai it would cower limply in the corner, weeping, and refuse to even get in the ring.

The Best Thai. We have eaten many times at this excellent restaurant and the food is always perfect.
The food is authentic and beautifully prepared.
The service is always friendly.
It's very reasonably priced.
We're looking forward to our next visit.

Awesome food. I've been there many times and it's one of the best Thai restaurants in Perth. Certainly recommend it and will go there again.

Very average. Catered more for local Australians. Pad thai was a sweet tomato sauce, massaman tho tender tasted like beef stew, tom yum was pretty good. Wouldn't come back. There must be better out there!!

Curries are lovely. Tonight about 30 Thai people turned up for a party, so this place must be good.

Excellent Massaman curry. Meat was very generous large chunks, which was meltingly tender. Pad Thai very tasty. Service good. Would recommend

Always. The food is always excellent. Hard to go past for Thai quality. Excellent green paw paw salad and the best green chicken curry.

Saowanee's. Saowanee - in in my opinion - is absolutely the best Thai food in Perth.

Have been here with friends and my partner 10 or 12 times over the past six years and the food has always been excellent, the service has been first class and the staff are genuinely friendly. Highly recommended!

Great food ... try it out. Very nice tom yum seafood in a rich creamy sauce. Also had the yellow curry with tofu and vegetables. The basil, chilli, garlic beef was also good.

Great banquets, good service. Good location but small venue. Always busy so best to book to be safe.

Saowanee has perfected the recipe for addiction, because my taste buds temporarily developed a sudden surging tolerance for playing with fire with this particular meal. Saowanee's Tom Yum Soup (Small) - $9.90 If your stomach isn't very agreeable with certain foods, Thai cuisine might just pose a small problem. So many of their flavours focus on the spicy, salty, sweet and sour components that bring out the best kind of dish you could put in your mouth, but not the best kind of swirly whirly concoction to put into your stomach. As such, I needed to weigh up my options.

Overall Saowanee’s Place has some standout dishes. I definitely recommend the paw paw salad and duck curry. I would avoid the fried rice, I just can’t the amount you pay for it. I’ve never been to Thailand but my friends Fran and Kirsty rave about it. I found the food addictive and am craving my next paw paw salad. I guess it’s back to the drawing board and attempting that delicious sauce again, hopefully this time I can get it right.

THE FOOD JOURNEY
