Review Mela Indian Sweets And Eats - Perth

Puneet Sehgal
Obvious choice of restaurant for Indian food located in north bridge. Fine dining experience with lots of options, starters, main course. Parking can be a challenge therefore go before it gets busy or allow 10 min extra to find a good parking spot.

It was not an indian restaurant but more of a sweet store. Because, my food had all the sweetness of the world. Yes, whatever I tried it was sweet. I order paneer makhani, it was super sweet, I could taste sugar in it. Then, in Chilli Cheese I couldn't find a single piece of cheese in it. It was paneer only, why don't they name it paneer chilli? And again, it was sweet, full of sweet chilli sauce. I couldn't think about ordering anything after it and take risk. I had better taste elsewhere.

It was sooooo good. We enjoyed every single dish at this place!

Have ordered delivery from here twice and it is now a favourite. I love their Lamb Korma, it's divine. So flavourful and creamy. I want to try their tandoori chicken next! When I dine in person, I would really like to try out their sweets too, the photos look interesting.
Sanjit Roy
One of the best tandoori chicken in Perth. Your naan basket is too good and kadhai paneer is next level. Thank you for serving such nice food.

The best butter chicken I’ve had in Perth and the second best I’ve had in Australia. Sauce was thick like it should be and full of flavour. Delicious chicken. Paid 19,99 for a set (full sized curry + rice + naan) via Deliveroo, that’s a bargain, awesome value for money. One con - the chef did not really follow the special instructions I requested, I still really enjoyed it so it’s not that much of a big deal.

bought 3 different kinds of half a kilo barfi . Absolute rubbish All have the same taste , sticky to the mouth, Was expecting a typical barfi taste but it is just a combination of Condensed milk & dry milk powder,

Always and consistently make delicious meals. Flamed grilled kebabs are the best. They are always there if you require anything and understand everything, They are willing to jump the extra mile for you forever. Fiery flamy super hot meat. Always!!! Thank you!!! 🤣

Had non veg thali , 2 veg and 2 non veg with a roti and rice, raitha and desert was there as well. But 23 $ is too much for that. Also was charged$3 for a extra roti, which normally is free everywhere in thali. Food was great but too pricey.
SM
Was given chicken friend rice with tandoori chicken pieces and there was a lot of sauce/gravy added making the dish like a mixture of rice soaked with gravy. When showed to the management they kinda argued that that’s the way the dish is served and argued that the customer was wrong. Also ordered a dahi puri and that was also not good with just 2 tables in the restaurant would except better service and dishes to be cooked properly.
Food Glorious Food
Last meal in Perth, got to love ubereats <br/>Good lamb vindaloo and chickpea salad. Prices are on the steep side compared to back in Brisbane. But to be fair, there was more chunks of meat compared to takeaways back home. <br/><br/>By the way, mela sells ladoo on their dessert menu.

I was impressed, on my last visit to Mela about 6 months or so ago, on the quality of the food and the revamped dining room and I was again on this latest lunch expedition. It sits up towards the top end of William Street opposite the Perth Mosque and with a menu covering a range of Northern and Southern Indian dishes has something for all who enjoy Indian cuisine.

Nothing great. There are better Indian restaurants in the city. We got our food served in 3 mins - and I knew immediately it's not going to be fresh. Everything seemed just microwaved. Although it had decent decor, Indian family vibe, good staff, but food wise needs to improve a lot. Not visiting again, would spend somewhere else.

My local Indian joint. Love the food here and I always go for the butter chicken and tandoori chicken. Like the other stuff too. Didn’t try the dessert tho but I’m not a sweets person.
Mai
On the upper side of William St. And corner of Robinson Av. Delicious Indian food. Love the naan and vindaloo here. Mango lassi is always nice as well. Don't know why it's quiet place but you are all missing out. Might be just the times I go.

6 of dined in, all pretty much the Thalis for dinner. Good portions and was pretty tasty, though the spice level could’ve been kicked up a few notches. Thali prices are slightly higher than expected, but still worth a try. Desserts and sweet treats on the display are gorgeous. Kheer came as part of the thali and it was fabulous. Would visit again. Service was lovely, we were a noisy bunch and they were really accommodating.

I ordered food from Mela Indian on Diwali the 7th of November through OzFoodHunter.<br/><br/>I ordered around $70 of food for collection which was prepared for the pick up time as expected. The issue arose when we got home and checked our order, where 4 items in total were missing.<br/><br/>I called the restaurant back to speak about the issue, where they hung up the phone mid-conversation. I found this highly rude, so decided to contact OzFoodHunter instead. Who spent 15 minutes contacting the restaurant, where then the restaurant claimed we were lying about the missing items.<br/><br/>The kitchen receipt did not match the online order receipt. The discrepancy is the exact number of items missing.<br/><br/>The restaurant owner contacted us after I left a low starred review on google, requesting we take it down for a refund. It has been nearly 2 weeks now with no refund from this situation.<br/><br/>All in all, I am not impressed with the customer service from this venue, and I recommend people to steer clear from OzFoodHunter ( as a online delivery provider) and Mela for their poor customer service.
Real Foodie
Been here last Saturday. Ordered mixed chat and veg Manchurian. Mixed chat serving was less, with not enough topping and chutney. Manchurian serving was enough but veg balls had only flour in it, no veges. Service was good. Will try other dishes next time.

i went there late in the afternoon, they were getting close to closing before opening again later for the evening service. My partner she wanted a none veg tali and i want seafood tali. The chef agreed to make them, i was happy with my dish and so was karen. It was delicious, the staff were really good. We enjoyed it and the price was very fair.

Been here a couple of times before the food was good which made come here again, but this time I tried 3 different Dosa’s which were equally bland and had no taste.. the sambhar was sweet which is very unlikely South Indian sambhar the chutney has no salt or spices. The masala inside the dosa was bland too. I expected more as I was accompanied with someone visiting the restaurant for the first time and I had bragged a lot this place but I was left disappointed myself. We did leave a review to the girl serving us but got no feedback In return. Waste of appetite and money.

Love this place! Some of my faves are the masala dosa, vegetarian thali, weekend chaat, chicken 65, biriyani, masala tea, samosas and sweets. Highly recommended!

Mela can be describe as a decent Indian restaurant with adequate portion size for the price and location of the business. The non veg thali is good value and the dosai are excellent <br/>The management need to focus on the training of staffs such as sequence of service

Best Shahi Paneer I’ve ever had. ❤️ now Mela is my new favourite Indian restaurant although I’ve only ever ordered via UberEATS. I’ll definitely have to go in and visit it one day

This place really lived up to my Indian cuisine expectations. First time I've ever had Indian food out and was extremely tasty...would highly recommend this place to anyone and everyone!

Legit, traditional Indian food. A little pricey but the servings are good sizes. Simple service and incredibly tasty food! The goat biryani was 10/10!

Today Thursday 11 th May 2017 , we had lunch at Mela. Apart from My husband & myself there were only two other people  dining . We ordered Lamb Vindaloo ,Shabnam curry with cashews peas & mushrooms , rice paratha & raita . The service was good & the curries very tasty. However the lamb was very tough & dry & almost inedible .The paratha was good . We had some Indian sweets afterwards . About ten minutes after leaving the restaurant , I began to experience severe stomach cramps & felt as if I had food poisoning . It got worse & i had to have a strong coffee before going home .I would not recommend eating here as it is below standard . Go there at your peril .  Very disappointed .

The most ever disgusting Hyderabadi Biryani!<br/>If you don't know how to cook a Hyderabadi Biryani why do you have it in the menu. Pathetic food!<br/>Avoid by all means

Used to be our family favorite ...<br/>We have been coming here for 9 years now and used to love this place. We used to visit Mela almost 2-3 times a week. The food was tasty and reasonable. We used to wait for the weekend menu – which was tasty, authentic and reasonably priced. But the restaurant and the food has just gone downhill since early 2015, now nothing taste original, quality and quantity has gone down, prices have gone up, service has become terrible. Really disappointed with our last few visits since 2015, what a shame that the restaurant which used to our family favorite since 2007-2008, has just turned into a substandard place.

Kutha experience.<br/><br/>Mela has painstakingly recreated an Indian restaurant in the Sikh Punjab, down to its tacky fit out (i love the roller door that separates the restaurant a homage to industrial chic), obligatory funky looking grime build up under the counters, and a menu which encapsulates Glaswegian Chicken Tikka Marsala, and a strange assortment of Vindahloo's (NB its only made with Pork) that has been concocted by the kitchen, and as a service to all the meat is halal (Kutha). Nevertheless the food is good, and for the price is one of the better Mohammedan Indian restaurants in Perth. Its that dialectic dualism that I appreciate, a series of dishes which are just not Indian, but yet the ignorant and unwashed of Perth demand them, and as every business knows serve the customers what they want. Secondly i love the sweets, fattening yes, delicious yes.

We were in Perth for business and a colleague took us here for dinner. Great Indian food. The thali is definitely the way to go because you get a bit of everything. They allow BYO which was also handy.

Not worth spending money as quality and quantity is not good . Our local Indian restaurant is much less expensive and quality is better .we bought take away the other day.. plain naan was so thick and hard Moreover lots of water in lamb curry ( less meat) ...much Expensive what they serve

I visited here on Christmas day as they advertised online they would be open for trade. I arrived at 8:20pm to a door that was locked. A male staff member was on the phone standing at the till looked directly at us. He did not walk over once when he was finished to let us know why or if the restaurant had decided to close the kitchen. We could see other staff members taking orders for customers inside still at this time. I will not be back here again as I was left disappointed. If this is how you will acknowledge your customers I can take my money to another business. Thank you.

Dear friends, <br/>PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PLACE FOR ANY PARTIES, AND DO NOT FLATTEN THE SUGAR COATED WORDS OF SHELLY GREYWAL. ORGANIZING A PARTY IN THIS RESTAURANT IS AS GOOD AS YOU ARE PAYING TOO MUCH MONEY AND INSULTING THE GUEST BY NOT FEEDING THEM PROPERLY AND MAKING THEM TO PAY UNWANTED CAR PARKING CHARGE FOR THE WORST TREATMENT.<br/>This is how the hotel management utilized the situation of party and made good profit out of the party, this was a clear game well organized by Shelly, as she didn’t come on that day after analyzing all these we came to the below conclusion of how we have been cheated while we were busy with guest<br/>1)They didn’t purposefully keep the starters in Buffet as they know that if they keep it in buffet every now and then they have to fill-in, if they serve it in table, guests and hosts cannot track of who had or who didn’t have<br/>2)Nobody keep track of how many plates of starters they served for guests, they were supplying some starters in front of hosts to make us feel that all guests have been treated well.<br/>3)Since it is a party people will come in different timings and hosts cannot track of whether they had starter or not as they will be busy in treating guests and greeting them<br/>4)They purposefully didn’t serve the expensive starters like chilly paneer and mutton kababs, hardly they served 4 to 5 plates for 65 people. Most of our guests didn’t get these and few didn’t even know that these were the starters.<br/>5)They played this cheap game for serving main course as well by not filling in the buffet tray on time, they know that if the tray is empty most of the guests will just take only whatever is available and will not wait for them to fillin.<br/>6)Told them to serve the desserts and it served very late. I had to tell the guests wait wait, they will be serving soon.<br/>As a host while organizing a party in such a reputed restaurant and paying this much amount of money per head we though we can have spent quality time with guests without bothering about the serving of food as hotel staff will be taking care everything. But it turned out to be the worst party we organized ever by making inconvenience to the guests for parking and not feeding them enough food because of the hotel owner’s cheap nasty game on profit.<br/>We paid for 65 people per head 32 $ , but they hardly served 30 people food for 65 people making our guests starved. While paying the money me and my husband were very happy as we thought we organized the best party ever and all our guest were treated like VIPs. But after we came home, few of our close friends told us what happened behind the scene while we were busy in greeting and talking with the guests. Then I called each and every guests and enquirer what they had and what they didn’t, only 4 guests out of this 65 guests got enough food and all starters, rest all got hardly 2 to three starters, one or two pieces and with less quantity of main course. <br/>So dear friends, I took 1 hour to write such a big feedback on what happened to us, so that if anybody wants to organize a party like this PLEASE DO NOT CHOOSE THIS PLACE FOR ANY PARTIES, AND DO NOT FLATTEN THE SUGAR COATED WORDS OF SHELLY GREYWALL. ORGANIZING A PART IN THIS RESTAURANT IS AS GOOD AS YOU ARE PAYING TOO MUCH MONEY AND INSULTING THE GUEST BY NOT FEEDING THEM PROPERLY AND MAKING THEM TO PAY UNWANTED CAR PARKING CHARGE FOR THE WORST TREATMENT.<br/>You will get many good restaurants for the same money with proper treatment and parking will be free. Though many of our friends warned us for this we didn’t bother and was flatten by the owner’s sugar coated words. The taste of the food was great, everybody liked it. But they didn’t get enough food to enjoy the taste which is the worst part.

I have been a regular at Mela for many years. Unfortunately, in last few months their food and service has taken a dive. I am not sure if their cook or ownership has changed. My last visit yesterday was very disappointing and I would not recommend this place to anyone. Goodbye MELA !!

I went to this place on 29/10/2016 with 3 people. It was slightly crowded and we waited for 15 minutes to get a table. Then a waitress came and asked us to take seat in a table. After a while a guy came and took our order<br/>P.S he didn't take our order in any docket. <br/><br/>We waited for more than 45 minutes and we still had no idea of what's going on. So we inquired with one of the waitress, she assured that she will follow up on our orders. But she never got back to us. After a while we went back and checked with the people at the counters and we came to know that the guy who took our order never placed our orders and the kitchen team never received any orders. <br/><br/>We waited for more than a hour and realised that the order was never placed. Moreover, we were greatly disappointed the way handled the issue. The lady at the register bluffed as if they took the order. <br/><br/>We would never ever come back and also I'll never recommend anyone. <br/><br/>P.S I can't give 0, so I give 1.
Shiv Sundaram
Very very disappointed with the service. A short guy with beard took our order. He took our order without a pen and paper nor a phone. We were curious immediately and asked him to repeat the order to check if he really took our order, he repeated it fine, then we waited for more than an hour today for dinner and checked with the person who took our order twice during our wait and then after an hour and ten minutes when we went to check what was happening, we found out the person who took the order never even placed our order at the counter. The way they dealt the issue was very very disappointing. Never coming down here again. There are many good Indian food place around, I would recommend visiting other Indian places than this place. I cannot give 0, hence giving 1.

Fairly good ambience and service. My sister and I had the Briyani, Chicken Chettinad and the saag paneer. The briyani was excellent and will definitely come back for that. The Saag Paneer was average, could have used a little more salt. The disappointment came with the undercooked Chicken Chettinad and believe me, there can be nothing worse than undercooked chicken. I did point this out to the cashier at the front and his response was " Next time, I will remember you and remember this advice". Now that, is extremely disappointing especially if you're a paying customer wanting a decent dining experience. Mela definitely needs to work on its customer service abilities or should I say the lack thereof.  I would go back for the Briyani but I will be extremely weary of any of the chicken dishes.

Ahaa! The Thali is so yum! And Jalebis are a MUST TRY!! 😍<br/>Tried both for dinner and lunch! Simply delicious 😋 <br/>P.S: would like hearing new songs 🙈

Not at all impressed. Almond burfi and chumcham were not at all fresh. Only flavour was sugar, just sugar. Will not go back ever in future. Shame !

I wouldn't say I've had a lot of Indian food, but this hit the spot for me flavour wise. The Dam Aloo was my favourite! The potato was fluffy and the sauce was beautiful. The Chicken Tikka Masala had generous amounts of chicken in it and rich in flavour. The let down for me was that in general the serving sizes aren't that big for the prices, especially the rice, which is something you think would be the most generous. All in all, a tasty meal with friendly service.

Our local Indian restaurant!! Try thaali, chola bhatura, goat biryani, samosa - they have too many good dishes to name. Nice casual atmosphere.

Like I said on previous occasions I always crave curries in Perth. Maybe because they do good ones or maybe because I love Indian food & culture in general. Anyway Mela is another little gem serving authentic Indian street food which is what I love. Indian hot in all it's glory!! A vegetarian thali made in heaven loved it<br/> oh & loved that Indian pink wall art outside the shop, felt like I was back in Delhi
Wasin Thammaraksa (วศิน / U Kumara)
Definitely a 5 Star for the Indian sweets they have to offer here. If you are lucky to come on the days in which they make fresh "Ghevar", do not miss this particular speciality sweet from Rajasthan (India). Crispy deep fried crunchy light batter shaped like round honeycomb in pure ghee annointed with syrup and crowned with fair good amount of almost toffee like consistency of evaporated cream and slivers of almonds and pistachio, this is definitely a sweet treat to any Indian sweets addict! Their Bengali Sweets like Kheer Mohan, an oval shaped freshly candied riccotta balls in Indian pandanus flower water stuffed with rich condensed cream and dried nuts, definitely a spot on in this restaurant. <br/><br/>The meals themselves are pretty standard on the scale to my liking, as an Indian Food purist. Flavours have been adjusted to the Australian taste for sure, and lacking of the quite robust original Indian flavour in general, even more worse in their approach in delivering good authentic South Indian delicacy. Sadly, this was not the case over 5 years ago.
Steve
I was told 15-20 minutes for takeaway. Arrived at 15.<br/>Food was cold. Chicken 65 was mostly bone. Afghani chicken was undercooked and had to be microwaved to finish it off and make it safe. Mela used to be good!
SteveH
The food's fine...the decor's kinda...you know...faux banana and super-saturated pink...they'll cheekily over-charge and willingly refund when challenged so check your bill. Think of it as sport...

Mela is my favourite Indian food in Perth! The food is authentic and consistently excellent. Service is very friendly and efficient. Thumbs up 👍

Service was good. Staff were very attentive. The restaurant was not overly busy. Surroundings were good. We ordered 2 Thali meals - one veg and one non veg. The wait was a bit longer than expected, but not excessive. The food was average - and I would not really rate it. I was very disappointed as we have been there after a year or so. I have had better Indian food at other Perth restaurants. There were 2 kids riding their scooters between wait staff serving which looked a bit dangerous. I don't think we will bother going back there again.
Nikki
My husband and myself visited Mela for dinner last week and my husband became ill with food poisoning following the meal. We ordered one masala dosa and one lamb seekh kabab kathi roll and he has been suffering from stomach ache and vomiting ever since.<br/>We even wrote to them detailing out the entire issue but haven't even heard back yet, leave alone any apologies. It's sad to see such low standards from such a popular Indian restaurant.
Hungrigirl
I was so excited to see that this place served masala dosa. I was in India for a couple of months a few years ago and no joke I would eat masala dosa 3-4 times a week - I was addicted! For those who don't know, masala dosa is a large rolled up pancake made of lentil and rice flour which makes it gluten free, filled with a blend of potatos and spices. The pancake is thin and crispy so it's not heavy. It is served with 3 different sauces and sambals. Mela did an amazing job of serving an authentic and delicious masala dosa and I will definitely be back. The waitstaff are so welcoming and lovely as well so it feels homey. Will be back!

Visited this place for the second time after having a good meal a few months ago. This time around we tried the mango lassi (yoghurt based drink) goat biryani (absolutely spot on, the meat was succulent) and the vegetarian thaali - a collection of chickpea curry, sambhar, daal makhni, potato and cauliflower veggie, rice kheer/pudding along with naan and rice - it was decent nothing spectacular (honestly coming from India, I'm a bit more critical of thaalis)
Kamini Naran
Really good food and service!! We had dosa and paneer Kharai with a garlic naan! Food was tasty and they sella variety of sweet meats (mithai) as well

I went to this restaurant for lunch with my mum in the weekend. We were greeted by the staff and immediately got directed to a table.<br/><br/>I wanted to try thali so I looked up a lot of restaurants where I would get it. This restaurant had the most decent reviews out of all the ones I checked, so I really wanted to venture out and try it with my mum. I can tell you I wasn't disappointed at all with this place.<br/>As you all figured by now, I ordered the Veg thali and also a mix assortment of Naan breads(pics attached). The Veg thali tasted fantastic. If I recall correctly, it came with 3 curries(dhal makani, chickpea curry and sambhar) and 1 bhaji (stir fried cauliflower with potatoes), 1 desert (rice pudding or kheer) and yoghurt dip. It came with rice and Naan. I'm a sucker for Naans so I ordered extra Naan with the basket of mixed Naans.<br/><br/>Everything tasted delicious, I was very pleased with it. From the big plate of thali I received, my personal favorite was the chickpea masala and it tasted so much better with a slice of jalapeño on top of it. It was a real nice touch to the curry and tasted excellent. Another favorite of mine was the kheer. Not too sweet, it was the right amount of sweetness to sooth my palette. Dhal Makani and stir fried cauliflower with potatoes tasted equally good as well and I didn't feel full while consuming it slowly. But as said earlier, the chickpea curry and kheer were the two standouts for me from my thali plate.<br/><br/>Overall, the flavors in all the curries were well balanced and tasted fantastic. The only qualm I have with this place is the cost of the thali. I paid $17.50 for it which I think is a bit expensive. I know many places which sell cheaper than that. So if the price was at a reasonable rate for the thali, it would be great.<br/><br/>Lastly, the hospitality of the staff were top notch for this place. During our lunch, the waitresses kept checking on us whether everything is okay and also the owner personally checked on us to ask whether we need anything and if the food tasted ok. So well done to the staff for their hospitality skills. Also I loved the punjabi music playing in the background it gave a great ambience to this place. I enjoyed eating my lunch shaking my shoulder a couple of times while listening to the music.<br/><br/>Finally since this place is in Northbridge, parking is not available. So you gotta park your car somewhere close by and walk it from there. That's what I did. Other than that a nice little restaurant me and my mum experienced. We'll certainly be back again to try something different next time.<br/><br/>

Came for lunch.. service was fantastic! I ordered the non veg thali - wasn't too bad however still could've been better.. The dosa is classic.. recommend to eat their south indian food..
Vishal Chandnani
A very interesting service. I ordered a South Indian dish called vada sambhar. Vada is a deep fried dish which ideally needs to be cooked just before serving. When I asked is it fresh, they said yes it was cooked in the morning (10 hours back). I asked 2 or 3 times and continued to say yes it is fresh and cooked in the morning. This is so disappointing as they are fooling customers who come here in anticipation of authentic cuisine. The attitude of the staff is that they don't care as they have regular customers. This is going to be my last visit here. <br/><br/>Hope you guys (team at Mela) can learn something about Indian cuisine and hospitality.

Been here once years ago and had an average experience, so decided to give it another try. It was quite empty, although it was a Friday night. The ambience is bollywood inspired and interesting. The sweet and mango lassis were okay. The masala dosa and samosa were fresh and delicious. The vegetarian platter starter was without fault but has extremely small quantities, quite a waste of money. The shahi paneer and vegetarian thali were authentic too. We got a few sweets packed, the yellow boondi laddoos are the best I reckon. Some of the sweets though had a strong taste of ghee which I don't like, even the chamcham. Don't go if you're in a hurry, but I'm prepared to wait for genuine food. Severe food coma after!
DiningoutPerth
One of my favorite places to go in northbridge for Indian. The thali is a yummy mix to try a bit of everything. And it's byo so another positive.

Mela is one of those slightly crappy looking, grossly kitschy restaurants that is bound to give you sore eyes considering it is splattered with cheap bright pink bollywood prints; however it is also one of those kinda great Indian restaurants that you don't come across very often in Perth. <br/>Coming from India myself, and being a massive fan of South Indian food, I always gravitate towards Mela. I even kind of like the bright colors!<br/>The food they offer is pretty typical of an India restaurant, they stick to safer dishes and don't do anything that out of the ordinary, which is a bit of a bummer because I'm dying for an Indian restaurant to open that doesn't serve stock standards like Butter Chicken and Lamb Rogan Josh. <br/>Anyway, back to the point, their Masala Dosa is fab, crisp crisp crisp like you get back in India, the stuffing is fully of curry leaves and lentilsm the chutneys are perfect. My only complaint is the Sambar, which always smells great but NEVER packs that tart tamarind punch that Sambar is so well know for. Bit of a bummer, but it's the closest I've found to an authentic Dosa so I'll overlook this fault. <br/>The lamb cutlets are actually some of the best I have eaten. Even my mum, a born and raised Desi, begs to go to Mela when she is in town just so she can have the cutlets. Try them, seriously... SERIOUSLY! <br/>For all the great things at Mela, like the chaat on weekends, pretty rad thali and so forth, the biggest let down by far are the actual Indian sweets. Please do not think that true Indian sweets are anything like the god awful ones you find at Mela. The consistency is off, the flavour is drowned by the overpowering sweetness... everything about all of them is just off! Growing up in Delhi, and being a true Bengali at heart, I love Indian sweet, and it's a bloody shame that Mela hasn't made an effort to serve something more authentic. <br/>So here is my tip... pop into Mela and grab a Dosa or a Aloo Tikki, then go to a proper Indian grocer and buy some important kaju barfi and ladoo (which will be a hell of a lot better and cheaper than what you'll find at mela), and then go home and in true Indian fashion, have a nap :-)

Horrible wash room. Terrible table services. <br/><br/>I am sure they can do better. Will not come back.<br/><br/>Not a clean place at all. Food was average <br/>

I have to share a very forgetful experience at Mela one afternoon, a few weeks back. My craving for Paneer had gotten the better of me so, I swooped into Mela to try out some Paneer delicacies. First of all, the seat that we had taken had cockroach under the table. Believe it or not, on asking the waitress to kindly drive it away from the table, she said "don't worry, cockroaches are harmless". Well, ofcourse jokingly, but I would like that sense of humour when the health inspector checks in :) Secondly, the chaat items were being prepared without gloves. I know that this is an Indian restaurant, but we aren't in India now. Most importantly the food. The Paneer, which I said I had been craving for, was the limelight of the afternoon. It looked like it was straight out of a 'ready to eat foods' packet, just heated and brought to the table. The Paneer was so rubbery that I could play cricket with it (exaggerated ofcourse, but you get my point). The dish was watery with absolutely no flavour in it. We ate it anyways as the kitchen had just shut and we coudn't order anymore; again, this wasn't notified to us earlier. The Dal Makhani that we ordered was decent, hence the 1/5 rating, but the whole experience just left us dejected. Although we were offered a sweet dish on complaining about the paneer, we had no guts to try anything more here. This was my second time. Never coming back again.

I get the thali every time, it's so tasty and filling and a great price. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the desserts are really yummy!

Indian food just like it is in India. Everything we ordered was delicious - masala dosa (crisp and tasty), chola bhatura (just like it is in Delhi), vindaloo (hot and spicy). Service isn't the fastest, other than that, it is my favourite Indian restaurant in Perth
Alejandra Nucette
I haven't been to India, but my partner has and he loves Mela. According to him, the food here is the closest to the real thing. If you ask me, I keep going back because the food is great, it's hearty, spicy, flavoursome, everything that good Indian food should be.
Kavi
I love Mela for their masala dosas and weekend specials. I find their dosa to be very authentic as compared to other restaurants. Weekend specials are great which includes my Fav chhole bhature, Mixed chaat with heaps of other choices. If you like chicken chatinad then you wont be disappointed at all. Overall I find their food very delicious and authentic. All of the dishes have distinct flavours cooked very carefully avoiding colors and other unhealthy tricks. Good chef doesn't need colours and lot of spices to create a beautiful dish which is good in taste and for health. If you are one of those then definitely Mela Is for you.

Had an absolutely terrible experience at this restaurant. Will never come again. Horrible place. <br/>Rating very logo to two fat Indus s up the road <br/>Will never come again

Safe bet. The service can be hit & miss at times, especially when busy, but the food at Mela is consistently good. I have been there several times over the years and always left happy with the meals. The variety of dishes available is also very good.

Bad experience. Service wasn't great, and people were not friendly. They were not happy to even talk to us! felt really let down by this place. Food wasn't great either! I would not recommend this place to anyone. Staff should learn to be more courteous and welcoming.

Geomon. Meat plate combination with Biriyani had no meat in Biriyani, just plain rice pulao. Told waiter, who did not respond. Told the person when paying bill. She just apologised. Not good enough. Not going there again.

This was the first time in my life that I ate a biryani...with no meat! And was told by the waitress that that's how Hyderabadi Biryani is made. Sure, I've eaten many a Vegetarian Biryani in my life. But there wasn't a vegetable in sight to save this dish either. The Mela platter was a complete let down. An apparent biryani with no meat, a butter chicken with one piece of chicken, and a lamb seekh kebab harder that lost all taste thanks to it's chewy texture. The only saving grace was the roti and yoghurt raita. Is that all my $$s paid for? Seriously Mela, you need to lift your game with this dish...especially if you're going to put your name to it. Otherwise, the service was average and the food came out pretty quickly.

Best Indian food I've ever eaten!!!. We had some lamb, chicken & prawn dishes with rice and naan bread (I didn't order the dishes so not sure of exact name). This was the best Indian food I have ever had.<br/>My superviser picked it up and we are it at work for dinner, everyone loved it :)
Amy
New favourite indian in perth (and that's saying something)! Reasonably priced, lovely food and the curries are packed with meat/veg, not just a bowl of sauce like some places. Give it a try.

Mela’s Vegetable Biryani is one of the best value meals on William Street, for $8.50 you get a vegetable soup, raita and a serving of vegetable biryani, which is spiced rice and vegetables cooked separately, then combined in layers.

Quite dissapointed on the foods. Excitedly checked out Mela on a weeknight with my girlfriend. I remembered it was pretty good from my past visits which were more than a year ago. This is the only place which serves Thali options for dinner. Both of us oredered the Vegetarian Thali ($16.50), unfortunately the taste did not meet my expectation. The Thali comes with 4 different vege curries + raita to go with our rice, naan and pappadum as well as a serve of dessert. They were presented nicely but all the curries were quite bland in taste. They were lake of spices and didn't achieve a good balance in flavour overall. Hopefully the foods quality will be improved as we do not wish to loose a Thali go to eatery at night.
Katie
Staff argue with you!. Been here a few time, food isn't bad - we mainly go to share a Thali as is cheap for 2 people at $20 (if you're not a huge eater!) Haven't been for a while, went last night with some friends we all ordered thali and 6 garlic naans (forgetting that the Thalis come with bread) once we realised we cancelled our bread order - the waiter said no!! We said really the waitress should have mentioned that they come with bread when we ordered so much naan! He just argued with us and basically said that it is our own fault as we should have known. Rude - it's not like the bread had already been delivered to the table! Don't know if I am being too fussy but the place seemed a bit grubby - really dirty menus.

Anywhere that has saag paneer this delicious AND delivers free to my house is a winner. Thanks for years of tasty deliveries

Highly Recommended. Mela is one of the restaurents in Perth which i visit often. One of the main reasons is its vibrant atmosphere; It is not extravagant but is definitely one favorite spot to have a good indian meal in a modern and buzzy environment during anytime of the day. I highly recommend the Dosa varieties which are always fresh and crispy and also really tastey. I should also mention here about their naan breads and their chat comestibles as they are always a delight to consume and reasonably priced. However there are nothing special about their curry varieties except they cater for gluten free consumers. If you are visiting this restaurent please do ask for the daily specials to the stewardess as they always do help you out with a friendly smile.

Thali heaven. Very good thali. I've been going here once a week and they always prepare different dishes. Also the roti and other breads are enticingly fresh and crisp, not smothered with oil.

Good food but takeaway outlet ambience at restaurant prices. Good food, never had a meal there that we didn't like.<br/>However, on Thursday we dined in a half-renovated restaurant on bare concrete floor. We questioned the waitress and she said that due to the last public holiday (3 days earlier), they hadn't finished their renovations in time. Well, maybe they should have stayed closed for a couple of days and finish, because dining on a building site definitely wasn't enjoyable. This restaurant is also no longer a bargain, for the prices they charge now, the serves are too small. Will come back but also look for an alternative.

Vegetarian lunch meal. Worst food ever had.. Not fresh at all.

Not good butter chicken. We've heard quite nice things about Mela restaurant before and because we just love Indian food we finally went there..ordered butter chicken and it was very disappointing.. there was missing flavor, thickness..chicken tasted like a leftover.. :(

Best dosa since India. Regularly hit this place up for their masala and paneer dosa's - would highly recommend.
Nishtah Jayekurun
Very disappointed with the jalebi. I ordered chicken tikka masala which was great but the butter chicken seemed to be some kind of left over and water added to it. The cheese naan were good but and the end we took done jalebi which tasted so bad that I could eat them. I am a cook and they don't change their oil oftenly. Not going back.

Not returning. My partner and I dined here last weekend. The place had two distinctly different dining area. The main area is more café and casual and there is as separate area next to the sweets/dessert counter is a little more “Restaurant” like with nicer flooring and lighting. Of course, the main thing is the food. This is where this place falls short. I had the Masala Dosa (large indian pancake stuffed with curried potato and spices). It was served with a watery vegetable soup and two chutneys (coconut and tomato?). It was ok, and filling too. But a tad pricey for $15.50. My partner had the Thali and decided to go with the non-vegetarian one. It came in a silver tray containing a small bowl of white rice (ok), 1 naan (ok), 1 papadum (terribly stale which is a disgrace), dhal (ok), butter chicken (ok), some meat curry (terrible, taste like shoe leather as it was tough and both the meat and gravy was tasteless), a spicy mushroom/veg curry (not great), yoghurt and dessert. Totally not worth $19.50 as it seems like someone’s leftovers and not much effort has been put into it. My partner said it was probably the worst indian food he has had in his life! On that basis, we would not be returning.

Food was very yummy and service fantastic . Would DEFINATELY go again

Worst Indian Restaurant. Tried dinner, with Chef's special dishes - it was so awful. tried it another time for their special Chaat dishes, and it happened to be another horrendous experience for us. this restaurant is not at all recommended if you are looking for an authentic Indian taste
Nasser
If you want to wait a hour or two for your order then this restaurant will be brilliant<br/><br/>Nothing really good about the food except for maybe the dosas and tandoori chicken<br/><br/>Biggest down side is the wait for food and service<br/>Also need a makeover for the whole place - toilets cutlery furniture and not too mention the staff
Mayank.manku
Poor service. Went to the restaurant on 22nd March 2014 at 12:55 pm for lunch. I placed order for samosa chat with cashier and was told to sit on table # 15. Restaurant wasn't busy. Waited for 15 minutes and when the order still wasn't served asked the service staff for my order. In the mean while another service staff came and asked if I was all waiting for my order. 5 minutes later order came. Food was Ok. Service wasn't.

Great Food + Price. This Indian eatery was good enough for me to come back a few times before I decided to join Urbanspoon and write up a review. The waiting and service would be my only little bad picks about this restaurant. The food was amazing the Doosa and non-veg Thali hit all the right spots. The food was cooked with the right amount of spices. The pictures and prints are based on a classic Bollywood film which adds to the experience :) Thoroughly recommend this place for someone who loves the savoury spices and sweets.

Been on the lookout for genuine Indian food and mela is the real deal.
Dino's Dinner
Can't go wrong with the Thali. I have been going here for years. Great place! Meals are consistant, service is pretty good.<br/>Excellent place for traditional authentic indian food.

Good food but ridiculous and useless customer service . Arrogant waiters but we can't say anything as we are civilised than those arrogant waiters

Never going back. Went to Mela last night and ordered a Dosa. The Chutney that comes with it was a normal teaspoon size serving. When we ordered more, they said it will cost $3 more for another teaspoon size serving. For any person in the world, let alone an Indian, this is a rip off. The dosa was nothing spectacular and mains were also very very average. I would pay more and go to the CBD Indian restaurant. The waiter had the audacity of saying that pay more or no extra chutney. Egoistic service, I would say. Whole and whole, never going back.
Foodforsoul
We have come to this restaurant many times in the past for their well priced thalis. Not sure if we want to come back though after today's experience. Been more than an hour and we are still waiting for our mains. The only excuse they have is that the chef is new! Well honestly that's none of our business. Get your act together. At least offer some complimentary condiments if you expect people to wait patiently for that amount of time!
WinerDiner
Fantastic!. The best Indian I've had in a long time. Very reasonably priced. High quality food. Exceptional service. Recommending to everyone I know!

I wrote a glowing review about this restaurant a year ago. However, after visiting this evening my opinion has changed. The prawn Malabar - a dish I've eaten many dozens of times - was this evening not the same recipe. The tandoori salmon was beautiful. We also ordered a butter chicken which did not arrive - I attempted to call the manager to our table, & although she clearly saw we wanted to talk, she chose to ignore us.

Over priced sweets for Diwali! A usual one kg box $20 today $35. Your competitors Maya Masala charging $17.50 per kg for all sweets! Rip off!Won't be purchasing from here again!!! Ripping off people
Tahlia
I really wanted to like this place. The staff were fantastic and the sweets were great but I ordered the non-vegetarian thali and it just wasn't up to standard. There was very little flavour and I wasn't impressed.
Gerry
Standout Dosas. Best east of Kerala! Always pleasant service and fabbo food.
LisaM
Ordered take away....50 mins later we are still waiting....we have watched 4 couples who arrived and ordered after us get their food.....still waiting....
Jen Martins
The food was good but the service was appalling and this occurred on multiple occasions. As a result, we no longer support this business.
ComerAlgo
Love their thalis - great value! Also a great place to have larger gatherings as they have two separate areas apart from the main dining area.
Sum Sai
Good food , pathetic service. Been there few times , and the only reason we go there is that they do some Indian sweets and snacks which no other Indian restaurant does like saag n maki roti , but every time service has been absolute disappointing , once we ordered 3 dishes 2 were on the table in around 15 minutes 3rd one came 30 minutes later when we were thinking of leaving after waiting for so long , but no complaints about food and there laddoo's are best even better than India .
PerthieGeorgie
Very good - this is my second time and I don't normally like Indian but this is an exemption.

Home. The moment I walked through the door I felt like I was back home in India. Finding a good authentic Indian resturant in Perth really has been difficult until I stumbled across Mila one Friday night. The food and service was top class and our waiter really reminded me of my youngest brother back home in Calcutta. This really made my night and made me feel so welcome.<br/><br/>One of Perth's best!
Le Cat & Kate
Tasty!. Great authentic food, reasonable prices and the staff are quite friendly. <br/>Saag paneer is a favourite and the non-veg Thali. <br/><br/>Fridays and Saturdays get quite busy, you will be waiting a bit longer on these nights.
HeyKitty
Only ok, have eaten here a couple of times.

After a recommendation from a friend I thought I would pick up some Indian sweets from Mela. I was really quite unimpressed by the rudeness of the young guy serving us - he seemed to have an attitude about everything my mum or I had to say. The website and this waiter came up with different prices and there seemed to be clauses - "you can buy this by the kilo, but not this or that"... Or was all a bit confusing.<br/>And to top it off the sweets weren't that good, will stick to Maya Masala in future
StarQ
I've been a couple of times for dinner here & have always enjoyed it. Food is delicious every time. Butter chicken is delicious and the lamb korma is a close second. Not a fancy place & service a bit hit & miss but not enough for me to care!
Tren
Good if it's not busy!. I've been to Mela perhaps 10 times, the food is consistently good but the service is a bit hit and miss. Once I've had to walk out because we still hadn't received our food an hour after ordering. Most of the time it's fairly quick and best of all it's super delicious. I recommend that you get a few different curries, dosas and naans. Cheese naan doesn't seem very authentic to me but it's damn good. 2 thumbs up if you get your food in a reasonable time!
Plate Licker
Went last Friday for dinner been told how good it was here so went with high expectations luckily I wasn't disappointed, food was very flavoursome good curries and entrées, service was a bit lacklustre but it was a busy nite enjoyed the experience .

My food came after 2 hours

We had to wait for 30mins for our food to arrive and I my order for masala tea was not served at all!!! And I was there for a hour and there was no sight of the tea at all despite me reminding the staff about it! Disappointed!
Sophie Green
Serve Chaat all day every day, please?!?!. They do it in India, come on guys! Please?!
David Edwards
Authentic Indian Cuisine. We've been going to Mela for about five years now and while we have tried many other Indian restaurants around town I still keep coming back to Mela. The food is always top quality and authentic, the sweets are great. Decor might not be the best but the atmosphere is always great. Thoroughly recommend Mela Sweets

Update!. Reviewed march 2013 , nothing has changed.<br/>Visiting 2-3weeks , food consistent every time.<br/>Don't change a thing please!<br/><br/><br/>-----05 May, 2013-----<br/><br/>Yum again. Another taste bud sensation. An Indian wedding in function room, so it was chaos in main area.Ordered mains at counter as staff were under big pressure ,meals arrived super fast .Turning tables over quickly as rugby crowd arrived, definite need to book on game nights.Indian food cravings satisfied for 1-2 weeks!<br/><br/><br/>-----17 Mar, 2013-----<br/><br/>Alan. Been going approx. twice a month for 4 years. Always looking for other Indian as good , so far these folk are way ahead of the pack. Sure sometimes you have to attract waiters attn. remembering this isn't pretending to be fine dining (we usually spend under $50 a couple) We share the same 3 dishes being Uttapum (a sensational spicy veggie pancake) Paneer shaslik (tandoor cooked cheese on sizzling platter ) and tandoor salmon entree size (3 good chunks) Taste buds are always singing by nights end , I hope Mela is around for a long time!!!!!

Worst service ever....... We have been regular customers of Mela over many years, as we believe the indian food we get is tasty and well priced, but last night, I was in disbelief at the lack of service we received!!!<br/><br/>Yes, I agree that Valentines Day is probably not a great night to go out for a quick meal, but the service and wait time for a meal at Mela was beyond a joke! We arrived at 7.30pm, then waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order. We had no eye contact from any of the wait staff (all run off their feet), and had to resort to waving a hand to get our order taken, which I hate doing, and shouldn't have to do, just to order our food. We would still be there now if I hadn't done that, and there were lots of other disgruntled people in the room last night!<br/><br/>20 minutes later, we were served our drinks, and cold vegetarian samosas which was disappointing, as they are usually served warm. We then waited another 35 minutes before our mains were served. The thalis were great, as usual, but waiting that long and receiving such poor service just spoilt the night. We were not there for a romantic dinner, but for a quick weeknight meal. Normally the service is OK, and we are in and out in less than 1 hour, for the same food ordered, but next time I want indian food, I'll be trying Maya Masala down the road!

Favourite. We eat here a lot.<br/>Best tandoori chicken,Dosas are always good.<br/>Cheap and friendly service.<br/>Never had a bad meal.

Authentic indian food. Been going to Mela for years, the food is always great and the prices are fairly reasonable. Unfortunately the service isn't top class but the food makes up for the service.
Admonius
Great food, place is questionnable and terrible wait staff. I have been to this restaurant several times with my now ex-girlfriend and my family. Each time we have gone, the food has been fantastic and highly enjoyable. Each time I get a Chicken Dosa or another curry that is available and have yet to be disappointed. The starters are plentiful enough to be eaten alone. <br/>At times, I have felt that place hasn't really been cleaned properly. That feeling kept permeating throughout each visit. I still am not entirely convinced to be honest.<br/>Each time I have visited, my ex girlfriend and I had to nearly grab someone to take our order. There would be 2 waiters only on a busy night which is perplexing. If you don't grab someone then you are most likely not to get served. The waiters would see us sitting with our menu's closed waiting to be served but they took no notice. <br/>The food is worth it and I cannot stress this enough. If the food wasn't worth it, there isn't a chance in hell I would put up with the service.
Kate P
Have been here several times as a friend lives locally. Its great for a tasty and reasonably priced meal. It's also byo. Its usually chaotically busy on a Saturday night but service always good. If you're in the area and looking for Indian I'd happily recommend this place.
Rebekah Ramesh
We had Brriyani.... Yummy and it's not that expensive!!! Just love the variety of sweets available! Felt like home... We decided not to miss it when we come to Perth :) highly recommended
Goodgirl
Yummy!. The best butter chicken and naan bread! I really enjoy the food at Mela and it isn't too expensive either. The serves are quite generous and the food is very filling. I absolutely love the beef samosa and the little chutney they serve it with. Best Indian in Perth I think.
Rofl Harris
Very good. They need to update the pricing guide at the top because you probably won't eat here for under $15. <br/><br/>That said, you will probably feel that you've got value for money whatever the final bill as the food is very good.<br/><br/>Service is hit and miss but always in a kind of charming way. You rarely get rude here.<br/><br/>I often regret trying new Indian places as they rawly measure up to this place.
Eating Out Perth
The Reasonable Indian. How a majority of Indian restuarants get away with the the ridiculous prices they charge here in Perth is far beyond me. Mela may not be budget but it does offer reasonable value for money. <br/>Sure it's not gourmet, trendy or cutting edge but it never gives the impression that it is attempting to offer anything other then simple, authentic Indian standards. <br/>Thali's are huge and the deserts are worth the trip alone.
Amy Thomas
Probably my favourite restaurant. Beautiful food, wonderful service. Nice feel to it too. I really like the addition of the sweet counter and I feel like I get a taste of the culture, not just the food.
Singh Maninder
Lost the crown. I am been a regular diner here but now the story is different ....very cheap and tasty food but its never same like i had chapli kabab 2 to 3 times and taste was different to my surprise every time ......as been running it from long time service staff is experienced but the thing food qualty is deteriorating with time ....not going anymore there for dinner as got something better but for breakfast on weekend they will find me there from time to time
Honey Bee
Not So Good. I didn't like the food, it was really bland and the staff are very rude and make you wait a long time before taking your order. I would not recommend anyone to go there you will be really disappointed
Missdelish
The bright decor and brilliant display of sweets draws you in, the food makes it hard to leave. Huge portions of sensational spicy food for not a lot of money. Two of us could not finish a shared samosa and veg thali, a spinach/saag with corn bread (a Friday special) and paratha, and a mango lassi each. And all for well under $50. <br/><br/>Each dish was impressively flavoured, but the standouts for me were the samosa with excellent flaky pastry and a delicious potato, peas and cumin filling; the lentils and raita in the thali; and the mango lassi. These favourites can often be ruined by less skilled cooks but they were each exquisitely prepared.<br/><br/>Pleasant and helpful staff abounded albeit one waitress was a bit shy. Bustling on a Friday night, it only took a few minutes to be given a table without a booking - offered a couch & menu by the friendly waiter at the door, we had time to decide what to order from all the tempting choices.
Shreejay Dass
Very bland food. Well below average and although the food is reasonably priced, I'd rather pay a bit extra for quality Indian fare. Chicken had gristle and very watered down curries.
Peanut
Best indian food!. Since moving to Melbourne 4 years ago I've yet to find an indian restaurant that compares to the Brick Lane restaurants in London. Mela Indian is the best indian I've ever eaten. The wait staff were extremely nice. I asked what the creamy lassi drinks were like and they brought over a small cup to taste, which I thought was really nice. The place was pretty packed out and the food was just to die for. I ordered the chicken korma and garlic naan and mango chutney. The chicken was really tender and tasted like good quality chicken. I rarely order chicken korma as in most usual indian restaurants the chicken can taste a bit tough and cheap but I'll defintiely be back here whilst I'm visitting perth
Floodn01
Bland!. I got the takeaway non-vegetarian thali. The food was bland and boring... absolutely no spice kick. I am never going back here!
Roxanne Jowett-Hall
Butter chicken was discusting !!!! The service was good but the food was meh... Average!!! don't order the desert they all taste the same.... Like raw sugar!!!

Great Food. I've been coming here regularly and never been disappointment.

Terrible Terrible service. We have been to Mela often, this Sunday lunch we waited over one and a half hours for our food. The children were crying with hunger. When the food finally arrived (after telling the waiters multiple times), it was very average. To complete our unpleasant experience, there were extra items on our bill which we never ordered or received, however they refused to correct it! Stay away!

Surprise Birthday Dinner. Service was great! The night went smoothly and food was delicious! I had a few people who arrived late when we were already onto our mains as we had a banquet, but they were happy to cater for the late comers and they had their entrees on arrival. =) Food was delicious and all our guests enjoyed their meals, the room was beautiful as we had a serperate area for our large group. We will all definetly be back, so many dishes we didn't get to try.<br/>Thank MELA
Brad
Awesome food. Just eaten at this eatery great food and service staff were friendly quick food was fresh and yummy not to hot

Great. Dining at Mela last night was a sensory experience. Top notch food with extensive menu choices is coupled with fine atmosphere and superb service.<br/>Price point was a bit high, but quality and portion size made it still an excellent value.

Great food. Service could be better on week nights. Will go back as i always love this place.

A solid favorite.. I can't get enough of this place. I always have the Dahl Madras and it never fails. The staff are friendly and the food comes out fast. I've never had a bad meal or bad service here and I go very often. Highly recommend!
Lynne Ratnayeke
We have been coming to this restaurant every week for 5 or 6 years and have never been disappointed. The food is always fresh, hot & authentic - and exceptional value. The menu is not extensive but has plenty of vegetarian options. The service is more than efficient - within minutes of being seated there is water on the table & a drinks order taken. The staff are friendly & sensitive to customer needs - which is particularly important for us because our 18 yo son has been confined to a wheelchair for several years. Never has the restaurant made us feel that we are too much trouble to accomodate! We eat out a lot & this is definitely one of our favourites!
Bec White
I have been there a number of times now and the food is always great, however unfortunately the service is often slow
Mistahews
We've been coming here regularly and its always been consistent. Not every Indian restaurant seems to have Thosa, but Mela does. And its a great table filler.
Lauren Comito
Massive servings, so make sure you're hungry when you go! Food good, we had the dosa- wonderful chutneys came with it. I'll be returning
Marinus Snetler
Great food. Well done - finally a place with good food and good service in Perth
Sato
Bad, disorganized service. This restaurant is very popular for their sweets which are usually taken away but do plan your days of dining here wisely cause they are pretty disorganized with their service. My husnad and I walked in on a Friday night and we were provided a table immediately. Our main side order came before the entree and then waited an 1hr and a 1/2 for anything else to come. It was already 9pm! We paid for the chicken tikka we recieved and walked out. The restuarant manager actually stopped us by rudely saying your meals are ready, you sure you want to leave and asked a staff the check but the staff came out looking blankly at her. She started whispering to another staff but did to adress anything to us who were waiting at the counter like morons. We were very disappointed.

Tasty. After many disappointing meals, I was about to give up on Indian restaurants in Perth, but Mela has restored my faith. Delicious curries, good service and decent prices. Good stuff.

Got take away from mela this time the food was great as always butter chicken was full of flavor and the naan was perfect to eat with it every pleased.

I liked so much in 2007 I hate it in 2011. This is one restaurant thats going down hill - if they keep their Service (wow ! so crap) Food (charge $2 more please dont serve shopping centre food)<br/><br/>I have seen it going downhill from 2007 to 2011<br/><br/>Sorry Mela (2007-08) R.I.P

I was on a desperate mission to find some food that I felt like that delivered to my work. I was feeling a bit unwell so I decided to go for a relatively mild order compared to usual, or so I thought. I ordered a garlic naan, saffron rice and a butter chicken. Garlic naan had a slightly charred taste to it, I got a briyan rice instead of the saffron and almost thought it was all over, however I finally got into the butter chicken and it was sensational, very very nice flavours to it and it seemed as though they used a traditional amount of chilli in the recipe because it was relatively spicy. A couple of little bits of grissle in the chicken but nothing to phase me too much, what I ordered could've easily fed 2-3 people depending on how hungry they are, not the best Indian I've tried but far from the worst. Certainly be returning for more, maybe when I'm a little more well I'll get myself the vindaloo to get the old kicker going.

Food was nice, service was terrible we were all still eating our meals and got asked if we were done yet. Very rude and place was messy.

Awesome service, great recommendations, fantastic food.

As authentic as it gets in Perth! love it. Prices are also reasonable.
Ahh
Disappointed. Ordered the meat Thali, only 4 small peices of meat and a watery dhal. The mango Lassi was lovely though. Ohh and very sticky floors with old dirty napkins folded under tables to keep steady ( not a good look at all) Dont think ill be going back there again.

Can this place get any dirtier?. I'm serious!! As much as I love the food and it is good food, the restaurant is disgustingingly dirty. Its like they've never heard of a mop and domestos. And the sad part is that it has consistently gotten dirtier over the years that we've been visiting and sadly off late, it has put me off from ever going back.
Lom
Absolutely Hopeless. The first time we went to Mela was a couple of years ago. At that time, the service was terrible. So, we decided to give this place another try....BIG MISTAKE!<br/><br/>They were not very busy but our meals arrived late, cold and at separate intervales so that the three of us actually ate our food at different times. To add insult to injury, our entrees arrived after the main course. The food is middle of the road and nothing stands out....overall, avoid this place as the service will leave you more frustrated than when you came in! The management are completely ignorant it seems.
Ronnie
Spice is nice...but service is nowhere. After catching a flick i was talked into going here by friend,it was a thurs night so a little busy.started with an entree.asked for a platter.took for ever then got a vege platter...my friend just ate it straight away.when i asked the waitress what it was she said vegetarian.i told her i asked for meat she said i checked you asked for vegetarian.she must know seeing as another waiter took the order and i hate vegi..ordered a coke 3times..then ordered bread...2..got 1...at least the mains where very good....listen food was nice but service was nowhere...what do you do
Rp
Worst Indian restuarant in Perth! tasteless biryani, soggy naans ,under cooked curry and not worth the money!!
Jassinta Doe
Pretty reasonable Indian. Mela is the definition of cheap and cheerful. The decor is not exactly to my taste with the Bollywood lighting pendants and the cushions in the threadbare booths are way overdue for replacements but the service is reasonable and the food is definitely good. Generally on a first visit to a new Indian restaurant we will stick to our preferred dishes so we can compare apples with apples; we ordered a chicken korma and paneer makhani both of which came out quickly, the sauces were a nice consistency and the serving sizes were generous in terms of a Perth Indian restaurant (particularly the size of the chicken pieces in the korma). The kashmiri naan was very good (stuffed with nuts, cherry, coconut and sultanas) but the cheese naan was slightly odd as it was stuffed with cheddar cheese rather than the normal paneer? Food is super cheap though -- two curries, double serving of rice, two naans and soft drinks set us back $55; bargain! The selection of sweets in the cabinet looked fabulous, next time I'm past here will definitely have to give the sweets a go.

Takeaway HELL. Do not order takeaway from this place! <br/>We ordered a takeaway and were informed that it would take an hour. Two and a half hours and ten phone calls later, by which time the manager had apparently already gone home, we still had no food. In fact, it never showed up. <br/>The most disgusting part was that they kept reassuring us that the food was five minutes away, so we could not order anything else. <br/>They also told us that the manager would call us the next day to apologise. That never happened either. <br/>If you are dieting and you want to pretend that you're getting Indian food. Call this place.

Salty. Walked in quite late at night (for Perth's standards) that alone impressed me, ordered some very watery masala chai's with a friend and two very salty thalis. I wouldnt say the place was unclean but it was not immaculately kept. Food was almost suspiciously prompt but thats hardly a disadvantage. Decent selection but found it to be overpoweringly salty. Wouldnt return any time soon.

Four of us dined here last night for the first time. We enjoyed samosas to start with and a thali each for main. Fabulous way to dine here. You get a range of dishes to enjoy and it's served with a good amount of rice, bread and a great dessert. Prices are fabulous - including a couple of drinks we paid around $25 a head. I agree that service could be more efficient with taking your order but with the casual and relaxed atmosphere there and the great prices and quality of food this is a minor detail really. Place was full and they seemed to do alot of takeaways so the staff are certainly not standing around doing nothing! We had a great night and will definately return and recommend.

What a pity ... Has definately gone down and become a bit more expensive. Please Mela sit down with your management team and rework the model. Mela used to be one of my fav places - also to take visitors to Perth. Please take head and don't just be another " canteen" you were a bit special - no longer. Very disappointed!

Great food, great staff, good times!. This is my favourite eatery, come here with friends regularly and are never disappointed. Cheap cheerful and always a good laugh is had. A great place to catch up and enjoy a meal.

Great Value Indian Restaurant. As a vegetarian, I've visited a considerable number of Perth's Indian Restaurants, generally because it is a culture that really gets the concept of what vegetarianism means and is reflected in the cuisine. However this ranks as one of the best for me. The menu encompasses a wide variety of Southern Indian specialty dishes, as well the the more familar northern Moghul cuisine that most westerners have come to know and enjoy. The two styles are quite different. The vegetarian, meat and seafood Thali's here are really good value for money at between $18.00 and $22.00, and I defy anyone but the greediest of patrons to actually get through the mammoth portions. The Dosa's are also really yummy. The menu is extensive, the staff friendly and the service really fast and efficient even on Fri and Sat nights when the place can be heaving with diners. For those familiar with Indian sweets or who have visited India, the sweet bar at the front counter is a must. A variety of sweets can be brought by weight or individually, and I never leave this place without taking home a box or two of mixed Jaleebi's, Gulab Jumans and various milk/curd based sweets. Imagine Indian style fudge and your getting the general idea. The Mela is unpretentious, great bang for the buck and is a good restaurant to visit if your dining party comprises carnivores and vegetarians in the mix.

I have been on a mission to find the best Indian restaurant in Perth for some time now. But I've often found the local, low key, cheap and cheerful ones more enjoyable than these Bollywood style ones. Service was average, and cold. Dishes seemed over priced for their standard and were generally disappointing. Lamb in the lamb vindaloo was tough and dodgy. Goat curry was uninspiring. Goan fish curry seemed to be lacking flavour. Baked ricotta saag was probably the highlight. Shame because Mela came highly recommended by an Indian colleague of mine who had said that it is the only (or one of the only?) Indian restaurants in Perth that has one dish a day on offer that has been prepared for the day- in the traditional manner.

The most delicious Dahl. Order it every single time we visit. Could do with a good clean and new non gungy menu's but it's bot bad enough to stop us going! It's good Indian food with realistic pricing!!
Gourmandius
Good homestyle indian food. Not chef quality but reasonably authentic. The sweets are largely missable except for the jalebis. God awful service. Quality of food and prices don't compensate for the poor service.
Jan
Not the best Indian. Felt a bit grubby, furniture ratty and menus need replacing.<br/>Food fast and reasonable. Told by Indian taxi driver that there are better Indian restaurants in Perth. We were from Vic in Perth for a visit.

Worth the wait (and weight). Very yummy food, cheap beers, but slow slow service. Had onion bhaji (the best in town) and masala dosa washed down by Kingfisher beer last Saturday and staggered over to watch the rugby at Perth Oval. You need to allow an hour to get your food, but when it arrives, it's to die for. Now that there's no competition from the nearby Sparrow (it's closed), Mela is definitely the place to eat in the Perth Oval precinct.

Staff were rude so I didn't stay, plenty more Indians around with friendly, polite staff so take your pick!

Patience is a Virtue. The food at this place is fantastic for the price. Especially the Dosas and the Thalis. Service can be patchy but when your paying $16.50 for a huge meal why let it bother you?<br/><br/>BYO wine adds to the plusses here.

Consistently good. Happy to always come here. Food is consistently good, well priced and I never get sick from it (unlike other Northbridge Indian eateries).
Water Babe
Favourite. Been going for years and it always tastes the same. awesome

Sat night dinner. This relatively cheap and packed indian food restaurant looks funky and authentic. The meals were nice however the sizes were a bit small for the mains! Service was a bit too overbearing with the waiters constantly asking you how your meal is. An average experience but probably would return.

Service? What service?. Worst service I have ever experienced. After giving the restaurant a couple of chances to redeem themselves, there was no improvement (in fact the service got worse), and I will never go back there.

Worth a visit. Good food
Cafe Addict
Average Indian, slow service. Ordered the non-vegetarian thali for lunch ($16.50). All of the dishes were very mild in flavour and were just warm (temperature wise). Roti bread was burnt on one side and the meat (especially the chicken) was grisly. The raita and 2 veggie dishes were ok. Both veggie dishes (green beans and dhal) tasted slightly different to what I've had before (but in a good way). Dessert was ok, sweet but very plain. <br/><br/>Staff were friendly and they were quick to bring a bottle of water to the table, but after that the service was really slow. There was a long wait to take my order then another long wait for the food, and it wasn't that busy.<br/><br/>Overall I thought the price was reasonable. The food tastes alright and the portion is good, it's just the quality's not that great. It's a bit unfortunate it's showing as the most popular Indian place in Perth at the time of writing this. Popular maybe, but it's not Perth's best example of Indian cuisine. <br/><br/>I'd consider returning for drinks and dessert - the cocktails with an Indian twist sounded interesting. They also have a large selection of Indian sweets, many which I've never seen before, and most cost between $2.00 - $2.50 (or you can buy in bulk by kilogram).

I had take away/delivery via menulog and hate say it was pretty poor.

Friendly service, great food. A casual, easy, yummy night out.

Absolutely awuful. What does it take to find a half way decent Indian restaurant in Perth? This was without doubt one of the worst Indian meals I have had in recent years. The Kebabs didn't qualify as Kebabs (I'm Indian and know the difference) - totally insipid and made of poor quality meet. The chicken tikka masala and chicken korma again insipid with awful cuts of fatty meat Barely cooked. Totally inedible Have lived all over the world and this is probably one of the worst Indian restaurants I've eaten in. Should not even be open as restaurant if this is indicative of the rest of their menu. 0/5.

Tahlis. Fabulous tahlis great curries excellent dahl good for take away the service is sometimes a little zlow

After being to Mela several times and thoroughly enjoying the food, but generally being let down by the slow and inattentive service. We kept visiting to see if Mela could complete the package, good service good food..... Unfortunately it got worse, the wait was ten minutes for our orders to be taken in a near empty restaurant, then after we ordered more people started arriving, and they were getting served, the same as our order, before us. After waiting patiently with no apology or explanation for 40 minutes our food arrived. It was tasty, but I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth after the people behind the counted refused a discount, then had the nerve to tell me that I should have informed then earlier or the slow service, we told our waitress twice, then I was told that the computer wasn't sending orders through to the kitchen..... Um? Alarm bells? Why are the doors open if the kitchen can't get orders?! Anyway moral of the story is, if you must get northbridge Indian, get it takeaway, and ring ahead.... I've run out of patience with their service.

Good value. Have been here a few times for a cheap meal and have not been disappointed. The food is great. I especially like the chicken tikka masala and the goat curry is exceptional due to the delicious sauce. The service is hit or miss but the restaurant is great value. Why spend $40 a meal at Chutney Mary's when you can enjoy food that is as good for half the price.

Very nice Indian... I really like Mela's food. I love their Onion Bhaji's which I think are the best in Perth. The other curries and the Masala Dosa are also delicious. Fantastically priced too. Only gripe would be the noise levels, it echo's pretty bad in the restaurant so you have to shout to talk, and it also feels very cramped in. The service isn't the best either, but their food is worth the lack of service. I think they need regular staff their to improve the service, instead of using backpackers/travellers etc.. Great food though :)

Fabulous tasty food, friendlly attentive staff, casual atmos with bollywood touches. 5 tickles from me

It was a Saturday night when I went to this restaurant with my friends. It was packed and we did not make any reservation. We waited for about 20 mins but the food was well worth the wait. It is a very authentic Indian cuisine restaurant that serves wide ranges of south and north Indian food (dosa, pratha, thali, biryani, puri and all sorts of traditional Indian cakes and sweets). I would definitely recommend this to my Indian friends who miss curries...<br/>
Nekomancy
My other favourite dish - saag paneer or saag gosht! The creamy spinach curry just offsets any fo the meat dishes really well. They also do a homestyle vegetable or chicken tomato curry.

Another thing about the Byriani is its price. At $12.50 and a choice of either lamb or chicken, its definitely a steal.
Jojo
Mela is a Indian restaurant that I've always walk passed but never thought of going in. Probably because I'm not a person who knows a lot about Indian food. The only thing that I know is Roti Prata with curry. hahaha.. a bit ashamed when I say this becaus
Edward
Other than the samosa, the desserts were the relative highlight of the meal, the range is excellent and each piece is a modest two dollars, which of course means there is little incentive to stop at just one or two. . .

P&A had been raving about this place for ages and I was keen to try it out. It's in William st and directly opposite the Mosque. What a great place, very kitch Bollywood inside. I'd heard stories about the service being average but ours was fine. We all o
