Review The Cutlery Drawer - Perth

Went here for dinner with Dimmi App special. Food was ok but could be improved. Service was great and staff was friendly.

Had the French toast. Canned blueberries and crumbed shortbread cookies just taste like someone walked to Coles and bought a few bunch of stuff and chuck it on a plate. Much prefer fresher ingredients or home made cookies crumbs instead. Sorry guys

Three things are important to me: 1. service (friendly, down-to-earth and polite, and quick), 2. atmosphere and physical space, 3. coffee and food. The service is very good - friendly, polite, pretty quick, and real. I have only gone for coffee and the occasional carrot cake. The coffee is great, but a little pricey - $5.50 for a mug is just unnecessary and greedy. There's something about the cakes, they lack something - moisture maybe, the seem a little dry when I go. Atmosphere, layout, interior design, the sofa in one front window, the name, music all just right for my cafe needs!

As a young MS warrior, MSWA Wilson chose this restaurant for our Christmas lunch, and I couldn't have been happier with the food and service. Delicious Thai chicken salad for entreé, a very generous portion of delicious soft fish perfectly crumbed and crusted, and although my selection of chocolate Belgian waffles had to be replaced, the replacement was a most delicious, crumbly almond cake. They very easily catered to our physiotherapy group as well as a couple extra guests. And the cherry on the cake was the fact the entire three course lunch was only $35. A nice atmosphere, kind staff, and delicious food. As well as the ability to cater to a larger group, including ones that had walking aides.

I ordered egg Benedict and long black . The price is high in comparison with the facility the caffe provides plus after finishing my breakfast I have to wait for long time for my coffee the waitress forgotten about us totally then I have to remind her about it. The coffee tasted sour in total the morning experience with the breakfast and caffe . Not impressed.

The best and only place to get food from this little cluster of shops. We grab coffee, lunch and a snack here when we are at the library nearby. The staff are friendly and attentive. Food selection is small but the quality is good. They also do chai, tea, hot chocolate, and fresh juices.

Great service but the food could do with improvement. My breakfast burger needed more sauce (would have preferred American bbq) and the meat patty wasnt good. Also chips needed some flavour. Nice coffee.

No consideration for the environment. Nothing more irritating in a cafe than ordering “small flat white to have here” and being served a takeaway cup. If I wanted takeaway I would have brought my own keepcup and specified takeaway. I come in and sit down specifically to avoid plastic waste and they just wasted it anyway! (A good 90mins before closing too, unforgivable).
Garcon ...
Ordered two milkshakes and a freshly squeezed juice. This took 15 minutes to be brought to the table. This was at 4pm on a Thursday with five tables occupied. First 8 minutes after placing my order the staff member thought cleaning the floor was the next most important task. When waiting at the counter to order, the staff member did not acknowledge me whilst standing at the coffee machine. To me the staff ‘just work here’. Raul and his team delivered a superior experience.<br/> <br/><br/>15/12/17:  Returned for breakfast; scrambled eggs done nicely and the previously mentioned staff member was there again ... he even asked me if the temperature of my coffee was to my liking.  This care shown was encouraging.  Shame there is no warmth or engagement from him with his customers when ordering at the counter.  I noticed too that the gramophone out by our table was covered in dust and cobwebs.  That's a bit too rustic for my liking.  (If that's what they're happy to have on display to me as the customer, what is the state of things hidden out of my sight)!  This is one of my local cafes.  I just wish they'd lift their game!

Found this place on a driveby and needed my morning brew so decided to stop in. <br/>Only one girl working the counter at peak morning period meant that my takeaway coffees and fresh juices were a long time coming. Sadly time ran out for me so I had to get a refund hence the low rating.<br/>If you're planning on visiting this cafe, make sure you have lots of time to spare. Mornings are busy for everyone... this place could do itself a huge service by employing more staff at rush hour.

This place truly surprises. It looks ordinary from outside but there is a different world within. The al fresco area is wonderful. Just had a 21st celebration there. The host /owner were really wonderful. Can't recommend this highly enough.
Bite Into It
I found that the wait on the food to come out was longer than expected. We waited roughly over half an hour for our breakfast to come out.<br/>Besides the wait, the overall experience was quite pleasant. The eggs florentine seemed small in portion as I usually don't finish it all but this time I cleaned the plate.

Nice hidden little coffee shop with cosy style inside. I had a coffee but was bit milky so didnt like much. I had scramble eggs on toast was ok not impressed.

The Cutlery Drawer has changed management, went for breakfast, the standard of food seems to have dropped. Tip Top fruit bread instead of organic fruit bread. They were extremely short staffed, chef was running around serving food and trying to cook at the same time, I hope they improve and keep up the standard this resutarant has always had as they will loose buisness and struggle to stay open.

We went to The Cutlery Drawer for pre Christmas dinner. We ordered caesar salad, chicken parmagiana, barramundi, linguini etc. Five of us very enjoyed our meal on relax environment. Ordered our desert chocolate brownie & cheesecake love it. I would recommend this place for diners on special occasions or just normal dinner with friends and family.

Not a bad little cafe but could do a lot better. Pros - good coffee and food. Cons - hotter than Hades on a warm day, very slow service for take away coffees, very slow and what would appear overwhelmed/undertrained staff. 3 people in the line before me cancelled their coffee order due to the fact it took so long. They'd do so well if they sorted these couple of things out.

Don't go on a hot day. Aircon doesn't work at all and I'm sweating just sitting and waiting for my food. Food and coffee is pretty decent though.
SteveN
Pleasant decor and staff - most of whom work at the counter. Don't chance this eatery if you want a quick meal. It was a little over half full on a Wednesday night and we waited OVER an HOUR for our meal. Surely it doesn't take that long to prepare a Nacho dish! Two of our group couldn't wait that long and received a refund after 45 mins. There are too many good restaurants about to be wasting that much time. Won't be going again.

We ended up coming to The Cutlery Drawer for a late lunch for the convenient location. Didn’t have the highest of hopes upon seeing the outside of the café, but it turned out to be pretty good. I had the Barramundi which was cooked perfectly and matched well with the wild quinoa and other aspects of the dish. Also had the rustic chips for a starter, just wish it came with more aioli

We had the most beautiful breakfast today! From the moment we set foot inside this cute café conveniently around the corner from Curtin Uni, we were greeted by such friendly, helpful staff. The smashed avocado was just perfect, as was the French toast with caramelised bananas and bacon. Would recommend! The chef was lovely, taking a moment to attend to us himself.<br/>The only drawback was how busy it was, so we had to find a table out in cold on the alfresco. Perhaps we'll call ahead next time.<br/>We'll definitely be back!

Best service we have had in Perth in a long time ! The specials were brilliant, fresh and good quality - couldn't fault them !! The chef came and introduced himself and clearly knew his customers personally, it was great!!

Great food and wonderful place in suburbia. <br/>Can highly recommend Granny Fritters and Tasi Tasty. <br/>Babycino comes with marshmallows and lots of froth.
Dan The Cake Man
Nice and bright Café that has several different seating options including cozy arm chairs. Friendly table service; I ordered the long Mac topped up and the savoury crepes. Coffee came out quickly and was hot and very good flavoured. My crepes also were quick also and were light and filled with a wonderful vegetarian combination of corn, tomato, and quinoa; a perfect way to start the day. The two poached eggs were also cooked to perfection. Overall lovely place and good selection on menu. I must come back and try their dinner menu which looks great.
The Daily Eater
Tucked away in the heart of Manning the menu has a lot to offer. From the usual eggs on toast to something a little different like the breakfast sliders.<br/>As a table we ordered the "Granny fitters", "Tasi Tasty" and "Avo Smash" all which where nice but nothing was outstanding. Granny fritters had a nice flavour and that mango dressing was tasty, the poached egg was nice but slightly under cooked, it could of done with another minute.Tasi Tasty was okay, wasn't overly enjoyable. The salmon tasted like it had come straight out of the packet and a lot of grey was present, which I know is perfectly fine to eat but its just not very nice on the eyes as its the first thing I see. Avo Smash with peas was average, it just tasted like another "Avo Smash" though. <br/>Coffee on the other hand was very good! They use 5 Senses beans which I always enjoy.<br/>We saw the chef and I think he may be the owner come out and great some customers which was nice as not many do.<br/><br/>I will defiantly be back for coffee and maybe dinner as they seem to have an extensive and Impressive Lunch/Dinner menu.
Lesley
Lovely cafe not far from the river in a leafy suburb. There are the usual suspects on the breakfast menu along with a couple of unusual dishes. Service is quick and the food is beautifully prepared. I had the Raw Energy bowl of granola, yogurt, honey, tiny slices of rhubarb and minutely diced sweet apple all delicately enhanced by a couple of pretty nasturtium flowers.
TheSoloAvocado.com
We had an impromptu lunch her yesterday but I've eaten here before too. It's a great spot with lovely staff and really good food. They do all day breakfast without batting an eyelid as well as lunch and dinner with a small menu and a bigger menu. They also have a specials board and sandwiches etc on the 'fridge. We had coffee and a milkshake (could have been colder), an omelette and pancakes. Very nice indeed.
Anna Mansell
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner last night. We both ordered from the specials menu (Lamb Rack & Surf and Turf) 😳 No words can describe how delicious the food was! Amazing flavor, fresh ingredients, cooked perfectly!!! The staff are also amazing. We always leave The Cutlery Drawer with a smile on our faces.
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
Sweet little neighbour cafe in the suburbs serving nice coffee and a decent breakfast spread. The menu is pretty standard but it features a few different dishes. Perhaps we were boring when we visited but we ordered the usual Eggs Benedict with Salmon and the Avocado Smash. Eggs were poached well, a decent portion of salmon was served alongside and the hollandaise sauce was nice. Not wonderful, but nice. The avocado was mashed properly, and was well seasoned. Toast was nice. Everything we tried was nice, but not outstanding or mind blowing. We enjoyed our breakfast but nothing really stood out. Coffee was good - strong enough and different milks are available.
Chris
Shhh! Don't tell anyone about the Cutlery Drawer. Great service. Beautiful food. Well priced. Prices a fraction higher than the published menu but still reasonable Quiet dinner with the wife after off-loading the kids. Very enjoyable. We'll be back. Thanks for a great night.

Had breakfast here this morning. Nice quiet location in the leafy suburb of manning.<br/>The cafe itself is typically trendy and very pleasant.<br/>The scrambled eggs on toast were beautiful and smooth and the bread was very nice. The breakfast burgers, 2 small sliders, were fantastic. The bread was light and fluffy, bacon crispy and eggs very tasty.<br/><br/>My only criticism was the coffee...too milky and not strong enough for my liking. Also, the coffee needed to be hotter...was able to drink it far too quickly.<br/><br/>The lunch menu looked nice and we will definitely head back soon.<br/><br/>

This place is a great find!  The prices are very reasonable and the food was seriously excellent!  Couldn't have been better - all four of us were so impressed.  For meals of this quality we would normally expect to pay much more.  Our serves were very generous and the staff were friendly and helpful.  Parking is plentiful.  It's so nice to find a local restaurant that is of such great quality!
Yum
This is a very noisy restaurant. We could not hear each other. The lamb shank was small but tasty. There were not enough vegetables. The paella was very nice. The brûlée was boring but the tiramisu was good. This is a bit of hit and miss with the food. If you select the right meals it's OK. Just don't expect to have a conversation.
Diane
Each time I have been the food has been sooo good, can not fault it. It really is a hidden gem. I suggest trying it, you won't be disappointed.

Delightful. Went here for a function on Saturday night, the food was absolutely delightful as was the whole dining experience. A fantastic local gem.

Best Rack of Lamb going!. Went to dinner here on a Saturday night, and I must say that it just keeps getting better and better! I ordered the Lamb, which was cooked to absolute perfection, and perfectly seasoned. My partner ordered the sirloin, and that was perhaps one of the best steaks i've tasted. If you haven't already given it a go, I suggest you do!

It is now called The Cutlery Drawer. Same owner chef couple. New decor.

Great Breakfast & coffee. Service was excellent, lovely inside with aircon.

Came on urbanspoon to write my review, couldn't believe my eyes on the last review. <br/>We were at Whirlwynd on the same night for a family meal. I also had the pork, which was absolutely beautiful. Tender and delicious. And the crackly was very, very tasty. (What are they talking about?)<br/>My Auntie had the same and she said 'it was to die for'<br/>My uncle had the beef, 'it was the best ever and very tender'. <br/>My sisters had the pasta, both said it was wonderful. <br/>I'm sorry I do not understand some people!!!!<br/>I will defintely go back and I do hope they don't. I like a better atmosphere without people like them. Thumbs up to Whirlwynd!!

Will never go there again. The food was a disgrace, could have cooked a more appealing and appetizing at home. To start off the entrée of prawns and calamari seemed like something you get from your local supermarket freezer compartment. Our main meal was very disappointing the pork was just ok but the crackling was about 4 weeks old very dry and fatty infact tasted extremely stale. My husband had the fish which didn't seem fresh and the chips were deep fried to extreme very unpleasant. Not a very pleasant dining experience which is real shame as we like to support local businesses.

Great for families. No kids menu but kid friendly breakfast choices on the menu. Chorizo with eggs a big hit with adults along with angel hair pasta.
Deepa
Awesome food. Great night out, great food and service walking distance from home!! I had the vegetarian option which was grilled polenta with grilled mushrooms and grilled tomatoes served with rocket and feta. Delicious. Desserts were ok. Will definitely go back.

Have had many lovely meals here best breakfast in perth. One waitress in particular was lovely a bruntette i think her name was Sandal

Awesome Food and Service. We've been going to Whirlwynd for years. The food is always fantastic and the service first class. We love the breakfasts especially the Hurricane Chorizo and their dinners are always classy. Matt and Nicole always provide a cozy, friendly atmosphere.
Stephanie Jones
Great breakfast. Very tasty breakfast, will be going back for dinner. Price a little steep, but you pay for what you get! Freshly squeezed juice was awesome as well!
Julie
Awesome!!. Best breakfast I've had in Pert for a long time, can't wait to go there for dinner.

I have always enjoyed this place. The hurricane chorizo is an amazing breakfast or the spicy advocado toast with poached eggs. Dinner is amazing. The chef takes pride in his cooking and I would definitely consider it more fine dining than anything else. Beautifully crafted dishes and great service.... And some hot waitresses : ) great coffee too

Perfect choice. Required: casual place for lunch that would cater for family birthday catch up (different generations of family attending), reasonably priced and located somewhere in the middle of northern and southern suburbs. Big tick for Whirlwynd on all accounts!<br/>Picked Whirlwynd due to Urbanspoon reviews and not dissappointed. Does not look like much from the front but inside is lovely with very clean kitchens and bathrooms. The food was very good. We ordered chorizo tasting plate and garlic bread. The tasting plate had plump olives that the cafe had the sense to not ruin by warming them up. No complaints about the mains. The steak in the steak sandwich was tender and the pumpkin and goats cheese spinach salad was delicious. One thing was the bacon in the BLT was slightly oily though but all servings were generous and fries done well. We were dissappointed that there was no angel hair pasta as they had run out.<br/>The staff were very good and service too. As the cafe has floorboards, it can get a little loud inside. When the blender was turned on to make milkshakes, we could not speak to each other due to the noise. Maybe if the blender was moved to the kitchen area, this could be avoided?<br/>Overall, an excellent experience at Whirlwynd and highly recommend if you are looking for a casual, reasonably priced meal but well done food. Oh and BYO too! Perfecto!!

Birthday function. Having had a couple of excellent dining experiences, we were there today for a friend's birthday - with the birthday girl using the venue for about 25 friends. The mains and desserts excellent, the staff were lovely, and it proved to be a great venue for a gathering of friends. Minor grizzles were that with a set menu, there needed to be choice for diners - the last two to order were left with nothing but steak as their 'option'. The shared entree tasting plates were small, and lacking in both quality and presentation. Even then, it is a great suburban dining spot, with parking at the door, BYO, and consistently warm and friendly service.

Yummy!. Been there for a dinner for 2. Good and modern look of the dining room. Food was brilliant, classic but VERY well prepared and cooked with very good quality products. Only problem is the high level noise inside. Will go back soon to try brekky!
Riva Bassi Curtis
Thank you to Matt and Nicole and the fabulous staff at Whirlwynd for helping us to host a fabulous 40th birthday last night! The food was excellent as was the service, we had a great evening and will remember it forever, you guys are awesome, everyone was very impressed, thanks again, Riva and Anthony Curtis

Went there Thursday night and had the best fillet steak I've ever had, cooked perfectly and as trender as anything. I was a bit worried when they didn't bring out a steak knife, but I didn't need it. It melted in your mouth. My brother in law said exactly the same thing. My sisters enjoyed a tasting plate and shared a main of homemade gnocchi and said that it was very nice. 10/10 for me.

Good brekky. Went here a couple weeks ago with gf and have to say the dish i had which was the hurricane chorizo was absolutely delish. the restaurant is cute and quiet. the service was good and the prices the norm. would def go back!

Pleasantly surprised. A casual suburban restaurant with pleasant atmosphere and well prepared food. we ate with friends and all enjoyed our choices. friendly staff and good service
Good Food Addict
Delightful. This "little local" restaurant is a delight. Service, food and setting all top notch. Menu small but totally adequate for all palates. I have been for both lunch and dinner and have always been impressed. I will continue to support any local business with this level of quality!

A truly hidden gem. Wow - who said there was no quality food service in Perth? We took our good friends to the Whirlwynd (on Welwyn Ave) for a Friday dinner and were blown away by the friendly and attentive service from start to finish - could not be faulted. Importantly the food matched the service quality - we started with a shared plate which was more than enough for both of us. My wife had the barramundi - which was the bestest - moist and perfectly grilled. I had the breast of chicken - very sizable and so tender - again cooked to perfection. We finished of with a shared sticky date to complete a perfect meal and evening - a 10 out of 10 experience. The only minor downside - but a practice by most restaurants is charging a corkage fee when in reality the client unscrews the cap! If the waitperson has to decork a bottle - happy with the charge - but otherwise what are you paying for?
Helen
Go there!!. We recently had over 30 guests at party at Whirlwynd. The help I received in planning the evening was second to none and on the night the food and service were excellent. Our guests are still raving about the place and most are planning to return soon. It's a hidden gem that deserves popularity and success. Well done to all at Whirlwynd.
Frenchcutlet
I have been many times & have not been dissapointed. The service is sometimes slow but the chicken liver parfait & the hand made gnocchi more than make up for it. Must try it if you haven't yet. A hidden gem.
Coflov
Went for breakfast. Not cheap but delicious. Ordered large coffee which was very large mug but only one shot so was too weak. Told owner who was unapologetic and a bit rude. Won't go back. If you're gonna charge $4.70 for a coffee do it properly.

High price, decent food. Good food, fresh juice, nice decor.. just rather expensive...

Tracy. Food is great service is fantatic .This cafe is equivelent to any 5 star restarant we have been to over the last 22 years of marrige without the price and the best thing we could dress casual and felft very relaclaced. We would reccomend any 1 who likes fantastic food and great service with out the exsourbant prices

Good food, excellent coffee. A tad expensive but a good spot.

Have been to Whirlwynd several times since discovering this local gem a couple of years back. Have only been for the dinners and have always enjoyed an extremely pleasant experience. The restaurant is run by a young couple who offer a modest but quality menu. The food is always great and is reasonably priced for the size and quality, and not to mention - the friendly and attentive service, and modern and relaxed surroundings. Keep up the good work Whirlwynd.
Pam
Sweet!!. Eight family members went for a celebratory meal last night to Whirlwynd. Service was exceptional, attentive but unobtrusive and we all liked the black, ,white and red decor - refreshingly modern but not overpowering. The food was delicious. Five of our family ordered the steak special which was cooked to perfection and served exactly as each individual had requested. Past experiences in other restaurants had been quite the opposite, so we are all raving about this place, and hope to go back soon.

Lovely local. Been to Whirlwynd many times now and haven't had a bad experience yet! It is only a small place, owned by a young married couple, but the vibe is relaxed and the decor clean and fresh. The staff are genuinely friendly which is a nice change, though not surprising seeing as, like me, a number of locals frequent so they now know many of the customers that come!<br/><br/>Breakfast is delicious and different. The spicy avocado is awesome and the scrambled eggs are cooked to perfection! For dinner... well everything is my favourite, but especially the chicken liver parfait, crab pasta and all 4 mains are absolutely delicious! They usually have a couple of specials on at dinner as well. The lovely blonde (i think the owner) and brunette girls who served us were attentive without being bothersome.<br/><br/>All in all its great to have such a relaxed place to go to for breakfast/lunch/coffee/cake, yet have a wonderful fine-dining experience, without pretensions, for dinner. Everything is homemade as well, which you can tell from the fresh, flavoursome taste! Definitely give it a try!
Bec
A family favorite! For dinner, the crab linguini is to die for. My humble opinion is that they serve the best breakfast in Perth. I alternate between the chorizo/egg and relish with hashbrown, and the avocado & poached egg on toast. I don't drink coffee but they make a pretty good chai latte. We often take the kids as they r very family friendly. Two thumbs up!
Geraldine Quinnell
Very local to us so inclined to be generous with our thoughts........great reception- water and menus brought to table on arrival. We chose to share the chicken liver parfait as an entre- brilliant, prob the best we've had! Mains were a bit of a let down - a l-o-n-g wait after which the barramundi and the pork seemed a bit average. Maybe unfair and willing to try again seeing as it is SO local!!

Margaret. Our first visit to Whirlwynd Cafe Restaurant with 3 friends was a delight. The decor comfortable, the service excellent, the food perfect. The barramundi was delicious, the steaks were cooked to perfection. This restaurant will always be a favourite of ours. It is BYO, you will need to book so give it a try!
ShaunyJ
The best eggs and bacon on toast in Perth! Consistently good coffee and genuinely friendly staff.
Littlerockmelody
Yummy Sunday breakfast. Went for breakfast and had delicious pancakes and a nice twist on a smoothie - lemon sorbet, raspberry and apple juice - which was equally as nice. Friendly prompt service too. Would definitely recommend and will be going back!

Great coffee, exceptional service from the owners. Throughly enjoyed both lunch and breakfast at this small cafe. Well worth a visit!
Elspeth
Fantastic!. I have dined here many times sampling breakfast, lunch, dinner as well as coffee and cake, all being sublime.<br/>Service is friendly and efficient, always with a smile. The food has been of a high standard, each time I leave wanting more! YUM!

Good coffee!! We've enjoyed both breakfasts and dinners at Whirlwynd. The breakfasts are very flavoursome and diverse and are available til 2pm. The dinners are exceptional. I enjoyed one of the nicest meals there that I've honestly had in years; the rack of lamb. The owners are lovely, friendly people and the restaurant has a lovely 'vibe'. 4.5 out of 5 from us both.
Sovereign
Great little place where the owners run the kitchen and the floor. Small and simple but consistent menu. Well worth a look.

I went with the Eggs on toast 9.50) scrambled with mushrooms ($3). This meal came with one thick slice of toast- you could add another piece of toast for an extra $1. One slice was the perfect portion with the generous serving of scrambled eggs. The eggs were pillowy goodness. I did have to add pepper and salt however so maybe a tad under seasoned however I do find I tend to like food on the saltier side when I am running big distances. What I especially loved about this dish was the mushrooms- they weren’t your normal button mushrooms; I think they might have been shiitake mushrooms? They were lovely.
