Review Milkd Maylands - Perth

Serena Downey
I don't know when Milkd Maylands was sold, but it is now an absolute disappointment. I ordered an almond cappuccino and scrambled eggs on toast, with smoked salmon and haloumi. I was the only person in the cafe. My coffee took 5 minutes. The froth was separate from the coffee and tepid at best. The shot under-extracted so coffee had minimal flavour. Food took 20 minutes. There were two staff on at this time, a Vietnamese lady and a young sullen girl. Scrambled eggs were completely dry! No milk or cream added, or salt for that matter. But plenty of chunky cracked pepper?? I had to ask for butter for the toast and some tomato relish as the whole thing was flavourless. When the girl brought over the butter and relish, she informed me that there was butter on the bread already, I just couldn't see it. The fantastic vibe that Milkd Maylands had in spades for so many years, has sadly disappeared. I'd imagine that it's clientele will be doing the same.

nice place for breakfast/brunch, reasonably priced, the service was very nice and friendly although they may have been understaffed on the day. the food was quite good although the bagel we ordered seemed like it may have been microwaved so was quite soggy...

Went between 7:45 to 8:20. Great service, not too crowded, not too over hyped. Theme is relaxed enough to be enjoyable. Coffee was quite good (reg Flat White 1x sugar) - could taste the roast and enjoyed it as it wasn't a bland cup of coffee. The breakfast burger was phenomenal, my wife and I thoroughly liked it. Would reccomend for a brekkie or brunch date. Prices on cups are average; 12 bucks is about what you can expect for a good brekkie.

Went to Milkd today for the first time. Had breakfast & coffee. Was the best brekky I have had & the service was fabulous. The ladies were very nice & friendly. Will definately be my choice of cafes. Keep up the good work...

Very rude Barista. The Barista girl called out a skinny Cappuccino, and I want to confirm is this the one I ordered or it’s for someone else. I asked “is this the one with no chocolate on top?” Then she replied grumpily “please ask question at the front desk”, which I believe she is the one who is in the coffee making process. My friend and I were shocked on this response. There are many ways to handle it and she chose the worst way. I wanted to make sure is that what she had just said, so I replied “so you cannot answer any question?”. She messed up the second chance and answered “yes” very certainly. I believe there would be a more appropriate position for you work so you don’t have to face any customer, like dishwasher, or go back to study for your manner. Good start for a holiday.

What a shame. One the best cafes in Perth ruined in such a short time by indifferent service and bad management. In addition they are now refusing sit-down service within 60 minutes of closure to save staff costs. I think the few minutes saved will come back to haunt their bottom line very adversely. No longer a regular. Have gone elsewhere.

2.5 Stars. Pretty average meal for an almost hour wait. Had the Eggs Benedict and was very nicely plated. Just the wait was awful. Given I was in a large group, but I was one of the first to order and waited far too long. Just mediocre.

I haven't had food here but I've had coffee a few times, it was amazing. Love the decor and the employee's had good customer service!

Awesome little cafe.
Milkd have got it when it comes down to the basics.
Nothing over complicated or plastic. Just good genuine service, great coffee and fantastic pastries.

Great fast service, food tasted fresh and delish.
Had the tomato, Greek feta and Avo added a poached egg on a sourdough toast 👌 hubby had the apple and cinnamon bircher muesli, great serving size and just right.

Just had a late lunch here ‘cause the other spot we wanted to go was only serving coffee although they are open to 4. So we had toasties and a milkshake here. Hard to get that wrong. Friendly service.
J-in-Perth
This place has a relaxed vibe, lovely coffee & friendly staff.
I had the feta, tomato & avo on g/f toast - most delicious. Was too hungry to remember to take a photo 😆

Good coffee, friendly staff, phone orders make it very convenient for breakfast in a hurry. Try their Melt toasted sandwich such a good toastie! Rest of menu is good. Coffee here once a week.

A stop off before work for my small soy cap and the takeaway cups were what I classify as large regular/large so kudos to that, whilst it did not have the double tapped burnt shitty taste, it did taste quite weak. I was going to get something from the glass cabinet for my dinner however upon approach I spotted two large flies buzzing around the food inside, oh my :( big.turn.off. I did notice when I walked in it felt a bit ''grotty'' and needs a bit of a clean, I don't know if this is the feel they are going for - you know that dingy, grungy, old school 70/80's caff or if it was the afternoon (and cleaning will be later). There is another place in Mayland''S'' that I will frequent more often now that I have compared the two.

Local coffee stop. Staff are great well trained coffee is average to good but quite variable. Changing barista every minute it seems doesn't help. They don't get that some people like their coffee the same each time not a variation on a theme. Food is basic but okay.

Terrible service. Had breakfast here on the 25/04/15. Firstly, there is a 10% surcharge on a Saturday for a 'public holiday'??

Secondly, waited for over 45 mins to receive a slice of toast with avocado and tomato. I just find this to be a little ridiculous considering others would receive theirs within 10 mins of sitting down.

Thanks for the less than average experience ;)
Kelliemarie
Disappointing. I went for breakfast and ordered the poached eggs. They came out quite quickly and toast was warm and buttered and eggs looked good at first glance. After cutting into the eggs I discovered that the egg white was still raw and being pregnant returned them to the kitchen asking politely for the whites to be cooked and the yolk runny and apologizing for returning them but explaining raw eggs white can cause listeria in pregnancy. After waiting 15 mins my dish was reserved with cold toast, no butter and the eggs where completely overdone. I didn't eat my meal or ask for a refund. I simply won't return. What happened to good customer service? Instead of returning my dish trying to redeem themselves the kitchen sent me a strong message with their dish of how dare I complain. I am a Maylands resident and they have now lost a good customer. One the plus side the barista was lovely!!
Thedunns
What happened to the cakes?. Milk'd used to have some great cakes, now it seems they are using the same supplier everyone else is using in Perth.

Pricey. Ordered a flat white and a banana smoothie. The banana smoothie was tiny and not chilled. It was served in a small glass. First visit there and I was charged $11.00 for both :O

Staff and place are great though...

SERVICE?!? does it exist in this town? NO!. Ok, all for the laid back vibe in this town but..give me a break. A barista is a professional craftsperson who can run shots & do milk SIMULTANEOUSLY, take away is meant to be about speed..20 mins for 1 coffee & a space at 1/4 capacity. Novel concept hip cafe wannabes of Perth, a little sense of urgency..oh its groundbreaking I know..but maybe more than 1 person could take orders & cash..unfortunately milkd has copped it for ALL the cafes I have visited since moving here ..yes from fu!#@en Melbourne but jeez Louise it ain't hard.

My regular stop for coffee and snacks. Plenty of choice around Maylands but I keep coming back to Milkd. The staff are cheerful, friendly and knowledgeable, the coffee's good, the place is cool without being pretentious. Can't comment on the breakfasts but for coffee and cake, no complaints. (And they have gluten-free options - tick!)
Aymeese
My fave in Maylands. It helps that this place is within walkable distance from my house but the food is good and the place is nice and funky. In comparison to its completion Mrs S - well worth going to as there is never a long wait before you eat. good for smaller groups, max 4 people as the settings are quite small
Suellen
Extremely bad service, ordinary food. Have been wanting to try breakfast at Milkd for quite a while, although sadly it was not what I had hoped for. Coffee wasn't bad but was a long time coming. After waiting half an hour and watching others being served, I enquired about ours. The waitress didn't come back to me so I asked again. She said it was coming next. She only admitted to a mistake when I insisted on an explanation. The meals were brought out 5 minutes apart and were very ordinary. My tomato, feta and avocado looked nothing like the photo above. If you are using tasteless tomatoes, you should at least not use them straight from the fridge. We were given extra coffee on the house, but sadly breakfast had been spoiled by then. Maybe we just picked a bad day?

Wow Amazing! We came for Brunch, coffee is the best ever! Everything on the Milk Plate was so tasty :) highky recommended
THE ILLUSIVE FEMME
When I ordered the Bacon Stack I was expecting bacon, not a pile of rind. No love was put into cooking that breakfast, disappointing because I was looking forward to trying a milkd breakfast.
Cheryl
Came here for lunch and was pleasantly surprised, overall service and food was great including the menu options. Atmosphere and ambience could be improved considering how busy it gets but all in all would definitely return.
Best Steak Sandwich-Perth
The coffee is ok but I think it needs to improve overall with service, presentation and ambience due to fine competition. I used to go all the time but the staff have changed and are not as friendly. Still don't mind the odd coffee though.
David Mitchell
Always loved this place and the food and coffee are still good but the atmosphere has gone way downhill, too many rude and grumpy staff, today the girl making the coffee swore right in front of me as she wiped the scribbles off the service counter, clearly in a foul mood about something. No longer a pleasant experience , sadly
Magpie80
What happened to Milkd?. I use to live in Maylands and every day if would grab a coffee from Milkd and it was so enjoyable. The staff were terrific, the atmosphere was great and the coffee was GOOD.....but I returned on Wednesday and it was so disappointing...the staff were rude, the price for a coffee was ridiculous and the coffee was terrible. Definitely not going back, ever.
Tiffany Tonkin
Coffee was ok and service was totally lacking, felt invisible. Will not return - there's too many other great options nearby
CamSaya
Very poor service - order taken, money exchanged all with zero eye contact - not friendly and worse a watery hot coffee. Milkd won best coffee in Perth a few years back - unfortunately standards have slid and you don't have to go far in this street for a good coffee! I have to agree with Sophia's review.
The Non Existent Diet
Pretty Good!. Everything along my favourite Mayland’s strip is closed on a Monday, so my family and I made a quick lunch pit stop at Milkd. Milkd was crammed with people when we arrived, a waitress whizzing around quickly sweeping up plates on the table and wiping them down. The three of us settled down with the daily newspaper in the corner and checked out their menu.

Milkd has a standard range of breakfast items, and while nothing jumped out at me I was incredibly dehydrated and settled for the Soup of the Day. The bustling waitress informed me that the soup of the day was potato, potato & leek which is my favourite combination for a Winters Day.

The lady at the till was bright and friendly, ducking back between my orders to scribe down our chosen items. Luckily they had PayPass, which increased the efficiency of the ordering system. My sister also specifically wanted a brewed chai (with tea leaves) and the barista was quick to inform me that he could make us a black chai. Finally! A barista who actually knows what I’m talking about! The lady at the till was also happy to give me some soy milk on the side (on the house too, which was lovely of her and incredibly rare in the precinct of Perth).

My sister’s black chai ($4.00) came out in a little red tea pot, with her soy milk and a teacup. She absolutely loved the chai – she thought it was the best one she has had for a while. She also had the Tomato, Greek Fetta & avocado with black pepper & olive oil on toasted sour dough toast ($11.50). Out of the three it was the most visually appealing, two thick wedges of avocado sprinkled with ground pepper, massive slabs of fetta and equally large rounds of fresh tomato sitting atop the toast. Propped against it was another slice of toast and a potato fritter. The fetta had a nice lemony acidity and the dish as a whole would have pleased a vegetarian eater. The potato fritter was like a compacted portion of mashed potato and had an interesting flavour to it that I couldn’t quite pinpoint.

My Soup of the Day ($10) with sourdough toasties was pretty good too. It was a chunky blend of hot potato, bacon and leek that was nicely flavoured. I devoured it pretty quickly. The sour dough toasties were two pieces of lightly toasted and buttered sourdough that complimented the dish well.
My friend had the Bacon and Omelette ($10.90) , which the lady at the register was quick to inform us it was a toasted sandwich with tomato, spinach omelette and caramelised onion with smoky BBQ. He really enjoyed the mango flavoured blob of jam that went alongside it, which gave the whole dish a nice zing.

I quite enjoyed the service at Milkd, and they also do a mean soup (and a very good Chai). All in all, I thought Milkd was a decent place to eat for lunch. They also have some interesting items in their cabinet that I would be keen to try out for next time, and the brownies (counter bound) also looked appetising.

Seven and a Half out of Ten Soup of the Days

Best Mochas. Been here a few times but the most recent visit was roughly a month ago and I believe they have a new barista he was awsome! mochas were seriously the best I have had to date!!!
Jojo
Very let down. Haven't been to Milkd for brekky for a while, used to be great. Ordered the omelette from the menu, only to be told the delivery wasn't in yet. This was at 10am, but more to the point: delivery of what? Surely a cafe would have a supply of eggs? Anyway , ordered the tomato, avo and feta on toast. That's exactly what it was. A tiny piece of toast, with the other ingredients sliced on top. That's it. No dressing. No garnish. Nada.
CRAP. No wonder people queue for Mrs S.
Jan Peter
Ordinary, very!. Ordered a long black... always a good test for a barista and machine.

Very poor, watery with no crema.

Food very average - the sandwiches/wraps in the glass cabinet looked like those plastic display models you used to see.

The items we ordered made me think they probably were! Tasteless, careless and no love.

Waitress - beautiful pearly-white skin with the dragon scale tattooed sleeve on your right arm? How did you ever manage to serve us and clear the plates without uttering one single word... impressive! Needless to say, a smile was completely out of the question.

Verdict?

Tacky, ordinary and don't bother.

It's Turned LAME. This place has always been really cool.. UNTIL THIS MONTH. The baristas and servers were cool, kind people who knew how to treat customers. Now, there's some straight guy, and some straight girl who calls everyone "ladies", It's not fitting with the theme of the place at all.

In addition to this, the coffee is bad (since the change) and stuff comes out burnt. The weird, non-flamboyant and/or cool servers are hapless and unenthusiastic. It's like going from a fabulous venue to somewhere where people are really quite lame/straight/idiotic.

It's a shame, because it was always a cool place, The CD runs out, and nobody even cares to change it... the other day there was no music playing for over an hour. LAME! Unprofessional! Straight! Pity.

Lost a Regular Customer. I have mixed feelings about this one. The coffee is very much hit and miss.
I have ordered some great coffees, but of late, they have had not been good at all. The coffee has that burnt taste which is overbearing. The coffee is then bitter and unenjoyable.
I have also found the staff to be moody, which is not something you want to be around. Paying customers want to see happy staff, instead you see pained looks and the vibe that they do not want to be there.
I used to go to milkd all the time..but the last month or so I have seen a decline in good customer service, coffee and food. Its a shame as they used to be so good.

* No pancakes. * No eggs Be.... * No pancakes.
* No eggs Benedict.
* Do not serve fried eggs.
They ran out of spearmint (flavouring for son's milkshake).
They had no decaf coffee for my husband.
Saltiest eggs on toast I've ever eaten.
Forgot about my husband's coffee till we reminded them.
Bad service, ok food, crap menu.
DOESN'T LIKE IT.
Mummy Picnic
Our favourite coffee & sandwich place on our beloved 8th Avenue strip, and by far, the most warmly welcoming cafe in the area. We love Milkd because it doesn't have that 'you're-not-our-kind' air a couple of the others on 8th/Whatley put on. Thank you, Milkd, for embracing the colourful and varied people of Maylands!
DesertBloom
HIt & Miss. I have good coffe & I have had bad coffee from here. I think it depends on who is on!!! But as usual the coffee is over priced (where in Perth isnt??) & very very hot, is that bad yes for me when I asked for it not to be to hot!!! Havent had a meal here so can not comment on the food as yet!!!
Anchor Man
Could the service be any slower!
Claire
Friendly service, but I couldn't bring myself to pay $5.60 for a chai tea with soy, so cancelled my order. Sorry guys.
Lori
Coffee & cake - good coffee, yummy cake, friendly genuine service, comfy chairs - so all good!
Nicole Chiplin
Love it!. I love the coffee, the staff are friendly, the service is fantastic.. the food is great (I wish they hadnt taken the mushroom & ricotta off their menu tho) I come here at least 3 times a week, love its vibe.
Eamonn Foley
Decent coffee although a little burnt tasting.
Sweetpea_lyns
Good coffee, it's the only cafe open in Maylands on the weekend after 4pm
Paki Puki
The Breakfast is awesome. WOW the milkd plate breakfast is really awesome so flavoursome. Atmos is it's own style of funky, I know heaps of people who like it.

Consistent. If all the other cafes in Maylands have queues coming out their doors, Milkd is not a bad alternative. Bonus points for opening on Public Holidays with a smile.
Food worth the price, good and consistent standard.

Food came out quite quick this time around. Had avoided Milkd for awhile due to a 20min+ wait for breakfast sometime last year.
Smoochems
My regular local. Yummy coffee, friendly service and try the mini salami with that orange chutney yum!

Like another reviewer, I was hoping to visit Mrs S on a Monday morning, only to find it closed. I have previously been to Milkd in north Perth and been impressed, so was happy to have breakfast here. I had tomato, avacado and Greek feta on toast (plus a poached egg) and my partner had the bacon stack, both with iced coffees. The food arrived promptly, and despite being relatively simple, was delicious. In total cost about $43. Good value and a yummy breakfast. The banana bread and muffins look delicious too, am keen to try next time!
Mrs Gidds
Avo Evoo Tomato Mmmmm. The above always satisfies. Whatever the feta cheese is that they're using it's deluxe and I can't get enough of it! The coffee is always lush. A local fave!
CJ
Love this place. Great food, great coffee and friendly service. Thank you.
Michael Epis
Best poached eggs on the strip! Always get the mushrooms with baked fetta dish, with a poached egg on sourdough, at 14.50 is a great vege dish. And coffee goes fast aswell.
TJRabbit
Great quirky cafe in Maylands. We had the toasties and enjoyed the flavours. A bit small for the prices but yummy. The raspberry macaron was fresh and delicious.
Carolyn
Perfectly Poached. I was intending to go to Mrs S in Maylands on Monday morning and was incredibly disappointed to find it closed. I spied Milkd open up the block and decided to take a chance on their poached eggs.

I placed my order and the eggs arrived about 15 minutes later (yes that was far too long given there was only one other table in the café). They looked promising. They were nice and runny and packed full of flavour although slightly cold. And that folks, is where the positives end.

The toast was cold and hard as a rock. I couldn't cut through it so ate the middle of one slice. That was enough for me. The coffee was terrible and the service was almost rude, especially the waitress who delivered my breakfast.

Nope, at the steep cost of $13 (+$4.50 for a long black) I will not return to Milkd in Maylands again.
Annaliese Hutchison
Food was good. $13 for eggs on toast & $4 more for 5 slices of mushrooms was a bit steep for me. Service was friendly. Coffee was average, didn't go back for seconds. Overall we were happy.
CreoleBuff
Expensive. I had stopped going and thought I'd give it another go..... the coffee is average for what you pay. Tea for me on future visits
Sammy
Ok coffee. Food below average. Nice setup and ambience. Very expensive for what the products are like. Okay for a weekend.
Joy Pennifold
JoyP. Fantastic coffee, as at all milkd
The Sneaky Pigeon
Best Milk'd. Yum! This is the best of the Milk'd branches. Theyre all excellent but this one is most consistent. Coffee is grand!
Romy
Very impressed - service was friendly, coffee good, and the most delicious scrambled eggs. Pity I don't live closer by!
David P
Can't fault the food and coffee, however the ordering process seems flawed. On numerous occasions I've seen orders delivered to the wrong table, orders made the wrong way, or orders forgotten completely. They really need to work on this, surely it can't be that difficult with the small number of tables
Pris
Above average. Had brekkie here, dined outside on a sunny saturday morning. Service was great, coffee was okay, food was okay.

I must say if it weren't for the massive (not to mention fantastic quality) breakfast/cafe strips in Maylands and Mt lawley, I would be such a frequent customer here.
Thepinkhouse
I have never had a bad coffee in this place. Always a pleasant experience.
Simmo
Although this place has a cool vibe and the staff are friendly, this place epitomises whats wrong with the Perth cafe scene right now. Overpriced, average food and sloppy and slow service. Eg this morning waited 45 mins for salmon and eg on toast, finally arrived after bringing two wrong orders out and after I cleaned my own table after waiting 15 mins for someone to take the previous diners' plates away. Produce is often not fresh, but I've gotta say the coffee is consistently good.
Andrew Greaves
Is that what you want to pay?. Ok, I had a nice panini. But it was $14.50. Is that really what you want to pay for a panini? A toasted ham and cheese sandwich is $10. Is that really what you want to pay for a toasted sandwich? I call it a monumental rip-off.
Cs
Coffee. Flat white a tad too milky, but the coffee flavour was superb, raspberry macaron flavoursome, but I'm sure that flavour is not real! Wifi great (everyone in there in the arvo had the laptops out).
Slkp
Very good. Coffee here is really good, like the eggs on toast here as well.
Duane
Easily the best coffee in the area, but the food could be better. The Ciabatta is hard, as is the chorizo. Both are prominent features of the menu and unfortunately I feel as if I have lockjaw after a meal. Savory muffins are excellent. I would just like to see more menu variety in future.
Mztiff
Good coffee but not the best scrambled eggs. This was one our favourite spots when my partner was living around the area. Coffee is always good and a good selection of breakfast items - my partner's all time favourite being the avocado, tomato and fetta on turkish bread and my favourite being the Milk'd plate (big breakfast with the inclusion of chorizo-like sausage and fetta).

They used to make good scrambled eggs but now they taste rubbery, watery and just not egg-like, the switch to a different type of smoked salmon is also of lesser quality than before.
Gill
Try the banana bread. Good experience.
Strong pot of tea- tick
Delish banana bread- toasted with butter- big tick
Friendly staff- tick
Hooray- a good experience
FatCat
Crispy!. The tables might be the size of kiddie's play set but it's a minor annoyance....service and coffee are good, they have enough newspapers to go around and they make my toasties the way I like them.....really crispy...this morning's salami, provolone and roasted capsicum was a lip smackingly good combination. The fetta on Mr FatCat's Mild plate could have been creamier but the scrambled eggs were the nicest I've sneaked off his plate in a long time.
Chicken Teriyaki Boy
Good food and coffee. what more is there to say?

Delicious everytime .... Everything we have ever had has been great & reasonably priced - definatley in the top 5 best coffee shops - luv it luv it luv it!!
Food Auditor
Yummmy. Their velvet cupcakes were devine; baked to perfection. The salad was also very nice, and the portion size was good enough for 2 people to share (which means you can fit more cupcakes in ;) ). And of course the coffee is a must! Even if that is the only thing you get, it is all you need to be hooked. Definitely go there and check it out!

Gr8 coffee. We are regulars to this coffeehouse & whilst the coffee is not as nice as the North Perth site it is still really nice (& it's located closer to home)
staff can be moody, and sometimes rather unfriendly however the coffee is fantastic! food is great - I especially like one of their breakfast options - sourdough toast with the italian sausage, bacon, scrambled egg, tomato & houlumi cheese - delish!
JLO
I dream of Milkd poached eggs as I can't make them anywhere close to the perfection of Milkd! Try the bacon stack or the green eggs & ham or even go the whole way with a Milkd plate - you won't regret it! Washed down by what I think is the BEST coffee in Perth and served by friendly busy but attentive staff - it's hard to beat and I'm so glad Maylands is my local x
Bradley Nodari-Stewart
This cafe isn't really on my way to anywhere but I will drive just to get their soy lattes! Best I've had in Perth. The food is scrummy and I recommend the beans with an added side of a poached egg!
AshkimandMe
Our Local. This is our local.... we love the coffee and our favourite breakfast is the feta, avocado and tomato on Sourdough... it is so delicious. The staff are friendly and the food is great. Keep up the great work....
Edward Pencil
Not as nice, well I should say organized as the north Perth cafe but I'd go back, good vibe about the place too
Annabella
Food expensive and overrated. Staff very rudd customer service is appaulling.
JellyBean
Don't bother.. First of all I was pissed off at paying $12.90 for poached eggs on toast. Pft. I specifically asked for them to be soft & they arrived anything but. My coffee was better than I expected. Not very friendly staff, a bit snotty I thought. Definately won't return.
Makka Pakka
Yumm!. Their banana smoothies are absolutely delious and they do a mean breakfast.
Rhys Ryan
The milkd in north Perth seriously makes the best hot chocolates ever u must go down and try one no joke
Kbislooking
Milkd seriously has the best coffee in town, every time!
I go every weekend for the poached eggs on toast. They are so good that i don't order poached eggs anywhere else!
Frenchtoastandindiepop
Have you ever had an experience that you can’t wait to revisit, that you enjoy so much that you go back again and again and again? Well this is how we experienced the Milk’d bacon stack at a time where we were only just discovering the wonders of breakfasting.
May
Nothing too special on the menu so I went with the potato cake and smoked salmon. I found it actually quite good but wished they had more salad on it. With all the other cafes on the same stretch, I doubt I would actually choose to go to Milk'd over Mrs S. or Sherbets even.
