Review Brook Garden Restaurant - Perth

Alicia Brennan
We decided to try By the Brook after hearing several people say the food was fantastic, & wanting a new local eatery for our rare dinners out. Sadly, we were underwhelmed. The cheesy garlic bread- which I was excited to find was made with Turkish bread- was almost completely lacking in garlic, or indeed much flavour outside of the bland cheese. My husband's beer was warm. Then, after an almost 40 minute wait (when the place wasn't even a quarter full yet), we finally received our meals. I was not impressed to find the very nice cut of steak was lukewarm, at best. As were the 4 garlic prawns in their very small amount of sauce. Lovely steak, but cold by the third mouthful. I chose not to request a replacement steak as I didn't want to wait another 40 minutes. The restaurant itself was stifling inside, & I was seated on very uneven paving bricks. I'm afraid we will be going elsewhere in future.

My Friend and I went to By The Brook Restaurant for lunch last week, was pretty chilli outside ... the fire was going inside, beautiful atmosphere.. Lots of customers but didn't make you feel crowded out... Food and Service was fantastic. .extremely enjoyable... definitely recommend... So much so that...Sunday.. my better half took me to Breakfast there... Wow! Beautifully warm inside and the meals were substantial, enjoyable and yet again the Service was faultless. Nice walk outside over the bridge and the creek was flowing with ducks swimming...just lovely.. This is such a hidden treasure....and it pays to book ahead Complements to the Chef and Wait Staff

Had a great meal at the Brook Restaurant. Lovely wait staff and a wonderful chef. A interesting menu with some unusual dishes. One unusual dish was the New York meatballs with dates, sun dried tomato and onion. WOW, I ate quite a few bites of my husbands meatballs and were they fantastic!!! Suzanne

We were looking forward to By the Brook as it looked lovely from the website...fine dining etc Unfortunately we arrived...it was freezing! (Maybe put the fire on a little earlier?) we waited a while for our drinks (didn't seem very busy?) The people on the next table were already complaining about their's...our coffee was poor...the meals very standard and just warm...cracked cups with stains!...toilets quite grubby...it's a shame as the location is lovely...could be so much nicer...we go out for breakfast every Sunday and have enjoyed it for a long while but today was such a disappointment...the owners need to change or be changed...embarrassing...

Best restaurant in the hills! Sophisticated meals that are not seen anywhere else in Perth. Also has some funky twists on some well known classics.

We went there for my cousins 90th birthday service and food was excellent. For something different I would not hesitate in suggesting this lovely country restaurant. Thank you to the staff.

A bit on the pricy side, but good food. Took a long time to get served as there were a big unreserved turnout for lunch.

FKC. We live locally and haven't been to By The Brook since under new management. Great service, great food, we'll be going back soon.

Balmy night at the brook. Last night we had a wonderful night out at the brook. As the evening was so pleasant we opted to be seated outside in the tree lined garden. We were immediately offered insect spray to protect from the mozzies which are inevitable anywhere at this time of year. Having settled with a drink we ordered our meal from a menu which caters for all tastes and appetites. Shared entree of snapper bites and pâté with warm bread were absolutely delicious and just the right amount . Moroccan lamb and pork belly mains arrived in generous proportions. The pork belly was received with rapturous delight from my friend who suggested it was the best he had ever eaten " melt in the mouth" moment. All in all after a couple of drinks a wonderful meal , excellent service and a very reasonable bill at the end there is no doubt The Brook outranks as the best in the hills.
Dianne
Sawyers valley

Really good!. We were at loss for somewhere to go for dinner (1st world problem I know). By the Brook came to mind amongst other places nearby we'd not visited in a while. What a great meal! We didn't know what to expect having not been there since new owners took over. My partner had reef & beef or the Brook version thereof. Loved every bit of it, the steak was cooked medium as per request & the prawns were to die for. I am a fairly health conscious person (honestly) but the chips were sooo good I snivelled as many as I could from my partners plate. My veggie filo parcel & salad was just lovely. Ate the whole damn thing & could almost have licked the plate. I can only hope that the rich Camembert sauce was low fat... Oh well.
We'll have to go back, I need to try the garlic prawns & the bangers & mash. (Hallelujah they do a veggie version with gravy!!)
& the service was fabulous too!

Can't reach you. It would be nice to visit, if anyone was around or the place had email contact

Great Local Restaurant. After the recent fires in the Parkerville/Stoneville area, we thought we would do our bit to support the local businesses. We'd been to The Brook earlier last year and really enjoyed. Once again we weren't disappointed. The service, food and ambiance was thoroughly enjoyable. I highly recommend this little restaurant.

In reply to Baxter, perhaps that was the first shift for that waitress and if so, do what if she didn't know the brand of cider. What if the bigger establishments can get there product cheaper than the small businesses. Wouldn't they have to charge more?? Instead of being so critical, maybe ( and especially now in the wake of the fires and the community spirit, which you so obviously lack) you could try to help small business by being cognisant of the fact they are also trying to support families, etc.

Great atmosphere/staff. My wife and I were in early on a Saturday night. We had the log fire to ourselves. Staff knew the menu ingredients inside out (I have food allergies). Olives for entrée were fresh/locally made. You could tell they weren't bulk bought. We ordered the rabbit rogue, which was slightly over-cooked but still edible. The home-made gluten free cheesecake desserts were FANTASTIC. Highly recommend this Brook Garden.

Went here for Mothers Day lunch very disappointed nothing for young children meat was dry overlooked no gravy! Not even bread rolls or soup (supposed to be buffet?!) even the coffee was help yourself to the Moccona jar! Won't be back here :(

Over rated and horrible. The food was over rated and not worth the $. As we walked in we noticed a smokey kitchen, greasy filters on the extractor fans. The staff displayed fake hospitality. Food : for starters we ordered marinated olives and some kind of bean and roasted almond dip -it was tasteless! for mains we ordered sirloin beef as it was the only descent sounding item on the menu. Very dry and poorly presented and 6 undercooked soggy chips. . We chose to hurry up and eat as we would be going elsewhere for dessert. Not going back.

My husband and I had breakfast here on Sunday! The coffees were amazing, and our breakfast of smoked salmon scrambled eggs with spinach and truffle oil was really really yummy! We will definitely be back here, service was prompt. Love it

Great new fine dining chef if you have not been for a while it is worth a trip back. Lovely cosy atmosphere with pot belly fire and delicious rustic food, genourous portions. Welcoming and helpful staff and management. We go a couple of times a month now!

Must have changed chefs.... I don't kow what has happened, but this place used to be great. Still quirky and quaint, but the food quality has fallen through the floor. Even dessert. Before, it was worth going there just for dessert. Don't bother.
Happy Diner
Faulty Towers lives...... Owner was abrupt, music was in poor taste and loud and not what you would expect for while fine dining. Starters was good, mains i had steak and the sauce was as poor gravy with some pepper corns thrown in. Three of my guests had the risotto which they thought was made from rice pudding with fruit added with off the shelf supermarket pressed duck. One of my guests has the Curry which was like in their words a casserole with lots of carrot and curry power added, just like her mum used to try and make. The afters was a dry and nearly inedible sticky date pudding, dry and tasted stale with aerosol cream... $300+ for 6 people . Good wine list and not overly expensive.
Disliked: Food, Service, Atmosphere, Value

Very nice. Have been here several times, food and service has always been excellent although the desserts dont seem to be quite as good as they used to be (Sticky Date Pudding....) Nice cozy cottage-style dining, although we did get caught out once not booking and having to sit outside in the cold!

Very pleasant experience. Friendly staff, prompt service. Entree and main sizes were much larger than expected. The garlic prawns were nice but
I've had much better elsewhere. The eye fillet steak was cooked medium as asked, very flavoursome and the mushroom sauce was beautiful, and on the side as asked. The child serve of chicken and chips came as 3 large real chicken breasts crumbed and a small salad. It was big enough for an adult to eat. The ambience was nice with the open fire, it was quiet and the seating was comfortable. Would defininately recommend it to someone wanting a 30 min plus drive to the hills area and eating while out and about

Craving lemon meringue tart ever since. Went here for dinner with a large group, mainly kids. It was a beautiful spot to dine and the alfresco area is really nice. All i can remember of the food was the delicious lemon meringue tart - it was perfect!

Great atmosphere. The Brook is a great place to dine and the atmosphere is friendly. The restaurant is quaint and the food is delicious. I went there in Jan this year and highly recommend the food. A point to note for diners is there is no air conditioning. They only have 2 x pedestal fans that barely help. It is a very warm/hot restaurant. My parents went there for lunch on a sunday in Feb and it was 36 degrees. They could not breathe and it was even hotter outside. Give this restaurant a miss when the weather is very hot - otherwise the food/atmosphere and service are fantastic and would highly recommend.

Great Food. Great food. Had breakfast and was impressed with serving size and quality.
It was completely packed so I would recommend booking to be sure you get a seat. Lovely location too.

Likes it. Went here in February for a Friday night dinner with three friends. We had decided not to have an entree and ordered our main courses at 7.30. By 8.45 we enquired if they had forgotten about us, and to ask for some bread or something as we were starving! Were told our food was almost ready. Luckily, it was well worth waiting for. We had mains of fish, chicken and a honey chicken and all dishes were excellent. We ordered a different dessert each to share and all except the cheesecake were exceptional. The texture of the 'cheesecake' was all wrong - I think it was a whipped evaporated milk filling. Looked fantastic but very disappointing. Would definitely go here again. But would like to offer some advice to the owners - an explanation of why our meal was late and a complimentary bread/nibble plate would have been nice.

Picturesque Setting & Great Food. This restaurant and their Chef know all about wonderfully fresh food and how to price it well. It's decor is modern but still welcoming and stylish. The lunches are a great price and strongly recommend the pasta's. Their steaks have been reviewed by the local food critic as something very special. Congratulations to the new owners as they made a major improvement. My favourite restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, or all three.
