Review Amarin Thai Restaurant - Perth

Dee H
I don’t know if this was an off night or something but out takeout was terrible. I ordered a $19 beef salad and the steak was chewy and there was barely any salad! We also ordered a chicken and prawn pad thai and it was BLAND, almost no sauce to it…no flavour whatsoever. The massaman was tasty albeit the meat cut was strange and flat rather than chunky. Would not order again from here.

Got a green curry takeaway. Not a very generous serving, however there was lots of chicken. Problem was there was too much chicken in comparison to the amount of sauce. The chicken was also a little bit dry but it did the job. The sauce itself was quite tasty and one of the best things about the meal, however it was really runny - almost the same consistency as water. If they could thicken up the sauce and have the correct ratio of chicken then I would’ve scored higher.

Went to this restaurant with my family. We ordered: Fried Rice (14.5) Tom Yum Chicken (9.5) Massaman Beef (18) Chicken Satay (9.5) Everything tasted pretty good. The restaurant has a quiet environment, is large and spacious. Prices very good. Wine was good and cheap. Only 5 for a glass of decent red

Ordered Green curry, penang curry, Yum Nua, Larb Kai and steamed rice for 3 people . Loving the flavours. I personally think the spicy level is comfortable but could be a little higher (for context, I find Macdonalds Mcspicy burger spicy)

Not recommended, very poor quality...spring rolls and massamam curry were average, the pad thai was basically soggy noodles with some sweet chilli sauce...all up it was very disappointing and certainly not worth the price.

The staff, especially the lady at reception is rude and unprofessional, doesn’t even know how to attend calls and take complete booking information. The food however was alright surprisingly. I would highly recommend a customer service training programme for all the staff.

The lady who appeared to be the boss was very abrupt, almost rude. Maybe a holiday might help. Pity because the food was delicious.

Very professional. Sat on the balcony and watched the world go by. Meal was very nice.

It’s fast and not much waiting. Love the couch and 70s decor. The wait staff are super responsive. The curries are sweetish so if you don’t have a sweet taste it’s not a happy meal for you. The food is home style Australian Thai food. So kinda like mum or how Auntie Thai does it at home. Good place for a chat.

Ordered a tom yum and bamboo shoots for dinner! Quite nice but the tom yum is too sweet for me. Bamboo shoot was beautifully cooked. Staff were very friendly and helpful too. Overall good

Delicious Thai and MSG free! Great spot to enjoy the Subi Xmas markets tonight. Love when you get a balcony seat! Friendly, helpful staff and quick food.

We ordered a few dishes. All too sweet and taste all the same including the tom yum soup which supposed to be spicy and sour. Overall ambience and service are alright.

Have been to this place a handful of times - very long wait times - last time waited for an hour and a half for the main course, average service and average food and they forgot one of our meals. Will not be returning!

Worst experience in my entire life. Went there with my girlfriend for our anniversary dinner. Booked a table at 730. First the entree is served. After we finished the entree, the first waiter came and ask us if we are ready for our main and we said yes. After a 10 mins wait, another waiter came and ask if we are ready for our main, what?? Next, the mains are served, the food was ok, and suddenly my girlfriend shouted and stood there pointing to her rice. There is a small cockroach walking on her plate. I was so disgusted and the waiter just walked here and pointed the cockroach came from top. And thats it. That's all he does, blaming the cockroach dropped from the celling and doesn't do anything about it. We requested a plate change but couldn't stand to eat in this filthy environment and left. But!! We paid full price for all the food we haven't had a bite and they didn't apologize or gave us any discount of anything. Very dissapointed and felt disgusted for this environment. Will never ever come back aND will not recommend.

Disappointing. Exceptionally disappointing takeaway - old prawns in the tom yum, that I could barely cut or chew, even the noodles looked like they had been sitting in the broth for days. Chicken penang curry was average. Won't be going back.

Stodgy food. We ate at this restaurant last night and it would have to be the least excitingThai food we have eaten in Perth for a long time. The fried rice was stodgy, the pad thai tasted like it had been re-heated and the plate was half filled with bamboo shoots. To top it all off my son and I both have gurgley tummies this morning and when i rang the restaurant just to let them know all I was told that they only serve good quality food. No real apology, in fact there was a complete lack of interest and the woman could not get me off the phone quick enough. Never again.

I have been going here for many years. the food has always been hit and miss. sometimes good other times not so good. Yesterday it hit its all time low, hence the review. The food came out barely warm. The Pad Thai was a stodge, as though it had been pre-made and re-heated. We discovered that the 'Vegetarian food' is made with chicken stock, so is not vegetarian at all. I could go on but wont. The are plenty of good Thai restaurants around Subiaco and this is not one of them. Sorry...

First class Thai.Massamum beef was tender and succulent with no traces of any fat.Sauce was well balanced and flavoursome. The Chicken stirfry was loaded up with heaps of tasty vegetables combining magnificently with the Jasmine rice. Will return.

Can't understand the positive reviews. My first and hopefully only dining experience at Amarin Thai was a complete disappointment. It started with the chicken satay sticks - grey bits of fatty meat covered by a thick orange sauce with chunks of peanuts. The rubbery meat and what tasted like store-bought jar satay sauce was the beginning of the most disappointing Thai meal I've experienced in Perth. I was with a large group so got to sample many dishes, from curry puffs, spring rolls, Massamun curry, panang curry, chicken cashew nut stir-fry, and a prawn stir-fry. The meat in the curry dishes was overcooked and the sauce flavour lacked a real thai kick. The stir-fry sauces seemed more Chinese (thick pink sweet and sour style sauce) rather than traditional Thai flavours of soy, fish sauce, lemongrass, basil etc. I usually don't complain about restaurants but felt I had to alert people to the food in this establishment. Do yourself a favour and go down Rokeby Rd for far better tasting Thai for similar prices.

Fresh and fabulous. Had dinner here on Saturday. The food was fresh and delicious. We will be returning!

Good food but poor wait staff. The wait staff that served our group of 15 people were not only lacking in competence but were also rude. Writing down food orders proved difficult and when incorrect food was given they tried to charge us for it!

Too bad that the staff ruined what otherwise was a good night with delicious food.

An old standard. We have been coming to Amarin Thai since my daughter was 16 and she turns 40 this year. This is no Nahm Thai but the food is consistently good and the service somehow passes for acceptable. Wine on list is never available but there is a great bottle shop underneath and the location is perfect with lots of parking and a great Rokeby Road vibe. A great middle of the road option when you just want to relax and be comfortable. Perhaps a new fit out could take Amarin Thai to another level but you know what they say, 'if it's not broke, don't fix it'.

Amarin is a staple. So I have been going to this place for pretty much a decade now. Haven't been back in a while so going back there feels like visiting an old principal.

Still good. Must go for the Amarin prawn and the Panang beef. Seriously good dishes.

Service is old school but We like that sort of thing. Tuna on cracker starter is also a winner. Ta

Disappointing Takeaway. Beef in our massaman curry was overcooked and the basil chicken stir fry was watery and flavourless. Red chicken curry was the only worthwhile dish.

Good food, Good ambience. I go out to converse with friends. I am over 65 and like 20% of people of that age am going deaf. I wear hearing aids. Most restaurants have loud 'background music' that renders me totally deaf. The young wait staff are reluctant to turn it down or off. They seem uninterested in the well being of their customers.

Not so the Amarin Thai. No music, carpets and quiet. Don't even need hearing aids. No corkage, rapid service and yummy curries and other Thai delicacies. Moderate price.

My restaurant of choice and highly recommended for those who like Thai food and being able to hear their companions.

Max Kamien

Perfect as usual. Fancy a great take away in Subiaco ? Amarin is always one of my favourite ! Keep up the good work !

Good for groups.... This was my first time to amarin Thai, though it appears this place has been around longer than my 30yrs.
Located upstairs on the corner of bagot rd and rockeby, there is ample parking surrounding it.
The decor inside was very dated, though outside was very quaint,

So I dined here with 6 friends, primarily because of their banquet. We had banquet no3, at $36pp it was very reasonable. We got to interchange things on their menu and got to ask for more hot or mild dishes (thought I'm not entirely sure if everyone at the table was happy with their version of mild) which was a GREAT option!!!

2 entrees, a soup and 5 mains with rice, was substantial, we had their coconut ice cream but it was terrible.

Look if you want a cheap night out for a group of ppl, I would definitely recommend this place, though for intimate dining don't bother.

Time to pick up their game?. We read the reviews and were really hopeful that the negative reviews might be wrong. Sadly that was not the case. The service was non attentive and slow with no awareness of good customer service. Some of the dishes were cold and the tofu was like rubber. We left as quickly as possible after the main course.

This is by far my favourite restaurant in Perth - great food, really well priced and have been regularly in the last 6 months and its consistently good - service is also fantastic! We love it! Our favourites are the curry puffs and the Green Thai curry oh and a cheeky cocktail or two!

Had an entree and two mains. Amazing tasty Thai food. Timing was good between entree and mains. Very friendly young waitress and waiter. Meals probably on the small size for servings.

I don't normally do this but that was the worst Thai I have ever eaten. I ordered the Jungle Curry. It tastes like boiled chicken and boiled veggies in a bowl of hot water. Where is the flavour guys?
Could not get out of there quick enough. Yuk.

Worst Thai ever. Picked up a take-away one evening after reading very promising reviews. Ordered pork with pepper and garlic, fish fillets with ginger and chilli and fried rice. Pork was incredibly dry with odd flavour. Fish fillets were fried, soggy and rubbery, unsure what type of fish?? Stir fried vegetables were in a sauce with so much garlic and ginger it was overpowering to the point of unpleasant. Menu claimed hot, however very mild dish in my opinion. Fried rice.....simply appalling! The whole meal had a very unpleasant flavour and was very, very greasy...unlike many of the very beautiful, fresh thai meals you can get elsewhere in Perth. Am a huge Thai fan and regularly dine out around Perth. This food was truly the worst I have ever eaten. It all endend up in the bin, I was very tempted to take it back to the restaurant to demand a refund! Avoid take away from this restaurant!

Yummy. Delicious food. Warm setting. BYO- always a bonus!

Came here once before was good..
Came here second time foods deteriorated and so has the portion sizes.
More sauce than prawns..more sauce than noodles and really annoyed that we were not allowed to sit indoors when it was empty.

Not authentic thai and not coming back.

Not Hard To Smile.... My girlfriend & I are frequent diners at the restaurant & enjoy the food immensely, but we have both had enough of the rude attitude displayed by the wait staff. In particular the owner’s daughter, who's expression & demeanour clearly demonstrates she doesn't want to be there. Because of her, we are no longer going there & are recommending all our friends bypass this venue also. Shape up or ship out girlie, coz you're not the only Thai Restaurant in town!

Yummo!. Came here on a quiet week night (although noticed a lot of takeway orders!) and the food was really good. Had the curry puffs and the chicken in pandan leaf for entree and then the tamarind prawns and the choo chee duck curry and steamed rice for mains. The curry puffs and tamarind prawns are a must try but the entire meal was enjoyable.
We didn't end up getting desert because we were both stuffed by the time we finished our meals. Bill came to around $75 from memory which I thought was great value for quality food.

Will definately be back to try other items on the menu!
Dani
Absolutely fantastic Thai for a very reasonable price which is surprising for Subiaco. True that the service isn't particularly attentive nor quick but I'm willing to put up with that for great food and value for money. Decor is outdated but who cares, it's authentic Thai!
Richard
Greet tasting food lots of flavor and freshness but staff forget you and and don't come back to check on you if you need more water or drinks you feel forgotten by the staff but the food is very good
Eloise
Beautiful food and fantastic value for money. BYO which is fab too, especially since the cleanskin wine shop is right downstairs. A must try: chicken in pandang leaf for entree and the green chicken curry for main. A must try.

Love it!! Best prawn red curry ever! Reasonable prices, attentive and friendly service.

Miang Tuna very good

Everything here is almost perfect except the fish dishes. we have hoped it would change but they never do

No expectations - but it was below them. Tasty food, reasonable prices, casual if a little tired decor, laid back atmosphere - what more do I want? Well, the food was fine but not a great surprise - I've had better Thai in Perth. I was fine with it all...until they kept taking my plates away as I was still eating. Not once but twice, and it wasn't busy. Dish washer in a rush? And then half a glass of wine ($50 bottle of Cloudy Bay) disappeared. Sorry guys, that's just weird service, and I'm looking for reasons to come back.

Well priced. Look this place serves up a good authentic thai food, nothing fancy and the prices are reasonable. What they need to do is jazz it up a bit inside, paint the walls, change the table cloths, put some nice soft music on to give the place some ambience.
JJbede
Quick and tasty. Although this thai place has less to choose from than the reg places, the food is always consistent and quickly served. It's always my 'go-to' dinner if I don't know what I want
Uncle Jesse
Good. Been coming here for about 15 years and have no real complaints. Some times can be better than others but generally ok. Try the slow cooked yellow chicken curry or the slow cooked beef maasamam curry.

This restaurant serves Australian Thai food that is exactly the same that you'd get in many other Australian Thai restaurants. Is there a shop somewhere selling premade sauces for these restaurants? The food here is pleasant but predictable. The banquet is reasonably good value but if there are any outstanding dishes in the restaurant you won't find them here. If you're looking for Aussie versions of classic Thai dishes, visit this restaurant. If you want something more authentic and adventurous, go somewhere else.

Food was average and there are places that do bettrt, larger serves. The service was very slow even for a Saturday night and they managed to get the number of guests wrong and had to add tables to our group. Ambience was a win though.
Nando
Smallest serving for a Thai restuarant I've ever seen... While probably the most expensive pricing for a Thai restuarant I've ever seen.. Service was good though but the other factors over shadow the service...
Ian G
Overall good value but the entrees outshine the mains. The seafood salad Is almost a meal in itself and the tuna salad outstanding. Green chicken curry a little uninspiring.
Grumpy Diner
Garry. The service was slow, the food mostly cold when served as a truly. Definetly the chefs night off. I have eaten better from the street vendors in Soi 27, Sukhumvit Road.

Love it! Good quality, authentic and good prices. I can't tell you much about the menu because I had the pad Thai once and lee going back for it!

One of the best thai resturants in Perth. Great value for money.

I enjoyed my meal at Amarin Thai, this is a real hidden gem in the heart of subiaco. While the omelette was a slight miss the other dishes were really tasty and I recommend that everyone should try out Amarin Thai at least once!
Edward
It feels the same as before, though the crowds have disappeared. The menus are tatty and on the wine list they are still trying to sell Wolf Blass White label chardonnay from 2008 for $86. It's BYO, $2.50 per person, though the glasses are small and not well suited to serious sniffing and swirling. The food too seems tired, lacking in energy and spark.
