Review Cafe Rasa Sayang - Perth

Esther Hew
Food was pretty nice & authentic. Roti was a bit chewy & Teh Tarik was too sweet to my liking. The cafe is a bit grubby & high chairs needs to be replaced as there were broken ones there.

Food is alright. Enjoyed the rice with fish and curry very much, the first time. Place could be cleaner. Cups for drinking water need change. A more friendly service would be nice though. Doesn't have the "want to go back" factor

More photos were added. Chef Bala told he started this restaurant 12 years ago. He was a chef from Subang Jaya of Malaysia. The curry goat was fresh and tasty. I liked the Teh Tarik (hot bubble milk tea) here. With the noise and the TV sports games on, this place made me felt like as if I was sitting in a Mamak restaurant in South East Asia. (2021-08) Instead of a real banana leaf, Rasa Sayang uses a big banana leaf plastic plate to serve. It does not have a traditional potable three or four curry serving containers for you to pour on the rice. The curry lamb and curry fish are nice. The Parata is crispy and not so fluffy. You can choose mild or spicy curry as you wish. (2021-03)

Best dhosa especially the onion and egg, ask for a few drops of ghee, and ask the expert dhosa maker aka Phav to make it crispy.

This is a small cafe (Kedai) selling Malaysian food. It is very authentic and the aroma is so very reminiscence of food shops of Malaysia. The only complaint I have and always had is this new server there kept pushing you to decide what you wanted to eat from the glass servery. She was very pushy. A customer has to see the curries etc to decide and not select something because of the pushyness from the server. Example, if a small serve of Biryani or plain rice was requested, by the time your plate was filled you ended up with a large meal instead of a small one. So be forewarned. The Biryani was Malaysian style minus the meat. One had to choose what curry you wanted with it. Unlike the Indian Biryani where rice and meat was cooked together. There were many other Indian snacks, like vadai and Malaysian Meehoon as well. I like the food very much. Price wise it depends on small or big serve. But I don't think it will cost more than $15. I was treated to lunch here so can only guess from past experience. I am not sure if the vadai was only sold on weekends as part of breakfast. Pays to check. Overall, an enjoyable meal. There are some outside seating as well.

This is the best place on Earth to eat this kind of authentic food in our wonderful Perth weather!! I mean eating in South East Asia, you are sweating bullets as penance while enjoying curry rice, roti or mixed altogether. Right here the flavors bring you right back to the source but more importantly the produce we have in Australia is the highest standards. The guys cook with so much soul and the spices are humming along. Truly amazing food and you cannot go wrong with the food selection, because everything is great! The price is also super reasonable. If you want a real true experience, this is the spot. I highly recommend everything, notably the goat curry, this was epic!

pretty good feed at a decent price during lunchtime on the weekdays - briyani (or plain rice) with whatever dishes they have on that day. taste is pretty good, but quantity could do with a bit more. staff here are pretty friendly too.

This restaurant is an Institution for Malaysians and lovers of good south indian fair. I have been going to this restaurant for 10 years now and have nevet hadthe quality drop. The portion aizes are generous and the family that runs it treats us like one of their own.

We have been traveling around all capital city. This is the First Malaysian food we ate in Australia which was excellent and taste authentic. Met the friendly chef who is from Malaysia. Most of all we couldn't bilife the cost was quite cheap. Will do very well if were to opened other place in city. Genuine Malaysian Food
Elise.
The food here is good, honest, humble food. The quality has remained the same throughout the life of the business. The owners are welcoming and very helpful. The review saying worst customer service is BS!

Worst customer service I have ever experienced in Perth. When asked for ingredients they have added in food to make sure it is gluten free, the chef comes up with rude answer not to disturb him and has an excuse that he has already explained in my previous visit(month ago) . Inspite of the fact being regular customer he should have taken care to explain with more patience. This shows his arrogance towards regular customer and I doubt they make all those food inside that small kitchen because the chef can't really answer what ingredients they have added even in my previous visit. All the best to everyone who wants to get cheap and nasty food.

Have been eating in this place occasionally for 8+ years. In my recent visit, taste of food was average & not as good as it was 8 years back. In-spite of the price increase, the servings had been reduced tremendously (especially if the lady is serving).
Nancy Ng
Very little serving of meat in the $10 lunch deal with one scoop of rice on a big plate. The lady owner expecially, puts just a few pieces of meat. Will not visit again.

Food was tasteless and nowhere close to the yummy Indian food found in Malaysia. Roti canai ($5) not crispy nor fluffy. Dhal curry was bland. Thosai ($7.50) was sad too - tasteless, not crispy. Coconut chutney was ok, curry not aromatic nor tasty. Nasi Lemak was horrible! We asked for spicy chicken which pushed the price up to $12. The chicken was completely dry, there was no sambal on the side. Instead Rasa Sayang served a weird tomato-sauce like concoction. Rice was devoid of pandan aroma and no taste of coconut milk. Thoroughly disappointing meal.

The worst restaurant ever. Taste is really bad, place is very dirty. The girl in the cashier always on the phone and she even forgot one dish. Never go back. Don't even bother

3.8 rating

Sup kambing $10 was yummy, apparently it runs out really quick.
$1.50 vadai is ok because it was rather small and cold. It did satisfy my cravings.
$16.50 large banana leaf plate of rice with curries including lamb shank - was a large portion though the shank was very tough. Curries and flavours were good.
$15.50 paper tosai and extra serve of goat curry (not in the pictures) was superb. Super spicy goat curry was soft and falling off the bones.

Will I return ? Yes! But maybe for takeaway because ventilation isn't great and I smelt like fish curry for the rest of the day!

$17.50 for 2 meat 1 veg...extremely small portions given and meat was nothing but bones. An absolute rip off ! Will never return, such a huge disappointment. Specially considering the look of the place, wonder how they justify the prices.

Loved the briyani and goat curry here. We also had the chicken varuval which was very tasty. The roti canai was also very tasty, extremely well made and with brilliant flavours. As a fan of roti canai it gladens me whenever I find a place that does it well, even though it's a fairly simple dish it's extremely easy to get it wrong.
We were recommended this place by a friend and I would recommend it to anyone as well.

Very authentic Malaysian mamak foods. Lots of spices and when they mean spicy, it is spicy. Worth the price you paid.
Jelly Belly
Love this indian cuisine place. Really yummy and authentic. The wait staff was friendly and efficient and really chatty. Big portion and reasonably priced. But be warned, spicy means spicy so opt for something milder if you can't take the heat!
LittleAsianGirl
Oh my god! Absolutely delicious the food here. We had the biryani rice with some chicken curry. Lamb murtabak, and egg roti. There was spice and kick to the curries, and it tasted so homey and really authentic. The kopi tarik also was tasty! Definitely coming back for more!

used to love this place for quick fix. very disappointed tat i took away mutton curry and got home realising tat they have given us chicken curry.

Heard about this place through friends. Went on a Saturday for lunch and the food was absolute disaster. The service was bad too. The tables were dirty and no proper management.

Not going again.
Dsh
A very disappointing meal for two. Cost was $35 for curry dishes composed of mostly bones. Tasty but poor value. Roti was good -- perhaps too much to eat. I now understand why no prices are quoted and they tell you the cost after eating -- most would be wise enough to walk away. This also explains why their custom has dropped off. Sad to see!

When I am craving spicy food, I think of this restaurant. Been coming here since a couple years ago. Food here was good and provided me the punch of spicy-ness that I rarely get from other Indian places.

As I moved further away, my visits became quite sparse. Came back again and had quite a bit of a shock. The prices had increased and the quality of food + taste isn't as great as before. In terms of cleanliness, the plastic cups were quite oily and tables were sticky. Was left disappointed.
Nathan Coppola
Absolutely amazing food! I was thoroughly impressed! What I liked the most was the attention to detail when it came to spices and individual flavours. The flavours were very rich and varied but well balanced too. Just wish there was a bit of sambal to enhance the heat, but the lime chutney was really good too!

Firstly, let me add that I eat halal and given this place has certification I trust that the food is indeed halal. I don't think the owners are but they don't serve alcohol which is a plus.

Food is tasty, that is if you like spicy food. The curry portions are disappointingly small. I would prefer they served larger proportions. Still worth a try if you like your curries and Malaysian food. The staff are friendly.

The general décor is ordinary so could do with an uplift in standards and cleanliness.

Overall not a bad choice for a reasonably priced meal in the area.

Good curries not as hot as id like them though !! The Dahl was beautiful with a good depth unlike the food court ones!! Lamb curry nice but nothing amazing. I tried the chicken varuval has a very weird flavour sort of like smokey bacon, very dry and tough. I will return just for the Dahl!!
Amanda Perera
Having tried a variety of dishes from their extensive menu, I can safely say that it is a hit and miss with this restaurant. Some dishes are consistently average whereas the others are good. The Chicken Varuval by far is their best dish. Other good dishes to try are their dosas (all varieties are good), idlli, vadai, fried fish and lamb curry. The one to stay away from is their roti prata. The plain prata is good with some sort of curry but the ones with a filling are completely bland. One thing I have to mention is that their prices are extremely expensive and a complete rip off. Nevertheless, do give their dosas a try as you can't find better ones anywhere else in Perth.

All this for around $14!! So good. Ordered my favorite mutton curry, assortment of Chinese veggies, chicken, egg & tofu and Britain rice. They also come with the crispy cracker at the side (pappadum?) which is pretty good as well. Hands down my fav place in Perth for South Indian food. They have really good prata as well (but depends on the chef actually)
Gary
Home style Malaysian curry. Average curry if you like home style food but don't expect good service. It takes more muscle to frown than to smile.
Why can't the owner get someone who can smile . Definitely will be good for his business.

Food. Best rice and 2 meat combination..just like eating in malaysia...amazing curries...worth a try..

Great!. Great food!!

Very good food

Worst service. Dirty restaurant. Amazing food. I've never seen any restaurant staff as bad as this. They were soooooooo slow everybody was waiting for their prata and drinks. It took half an hour for the drinks to be served. The tables were sticky. They were lucky the food was amazing. Best Teh Tarik and fish curry in Perth. I love the food but the service is terrible

THE BEST EVERRR!! GUARANTEED!!! CHEAP & TASTY!!!. I am a huge fan of South Indian food, and let me tell you, this place is by far, hands down, d most amazing "tummylicious" Malaysian Indian Food you will ever, EVER get in PERTH! From my first visit since i usually have regular cravings for their food at least once a week. Feels like i've been DRUGGED but who cares i'm lovin it right?!
Try Out the Chicken Varuval-My Personal Fav (its spicy) , spicy goats curry, fried fish! Have not really tried d others...
Rice, 1 selection of Meat dish, 2 Vege's and Papadam = AUD 10.00 - Fills ur tummy to the brim! What a bargain!
The coffee(AUD 3.50) was amazing on the first few visits HOWEVER the taste was inconsistent thereafter.
As long as i reside i Perth, i'll definitely make this spot my first choice for Malaysian Indian Food.
Petpet
Most authentic Malaysian Indian you can find in Perth. Beautiful teh tarik.

Love the food but service is always a disappointment. Makes me lose appetite whenever the girls serve customers with such sour faces and with a "not bothered" attitude. Only go for the food but expect some ice cold service.

Good Food Bad Service. This restaurant sells great authentic indian food which
I absolutely love,, My only problem is the food server -the young slim girl who serves the food whenever I'm there gives me the smallest amount of everything,, She is so so stingy and does not serve well. She gives out very little food and a lot of bad energy!!! I think the shop owner needs to move her out of this position n into the kitchen. Have someone who serves with a big heart n a big smile......please:-) I know all my friends agree with me because they've all said the same thing!! I will definitely be there more if she's not serving!!
ACTan
The best teh Tarik!!! Keep coming back for more!

Rip off!. I was a regular customer until last week when I ordered one meat and rice meal and the lady offered me some curry sauce and accidentally gave me one small squid, then proceeded to charge me an extra $4.50 for a 'two meat and rice' meal. I am not happy and will not be there again.

Tosai, chicken varuval & teh tarik....fantastico.

Nice food

Bad Food. I went here after reading all the reviews and was dissapointed. The lamb was tough and the curry didn't have much flavour. I won't be going back here again. 2/10

Yummy!. Honest to goodness Malaysian Indian food...

This is by far the best curry that I have had in perth...simply amazing and delicious..the staff are very friendly with great customer service..no doubt about this place but I will rate it 10/10...credits to the chef ....what an amazing effort...congratulations :)

I had his expectations for this place as I have heard great reviews. Unfortunately the service was terrible and slow. It took 20 minutes to serve the the train and another 20 minutes after that to receive my roti. The food tasted OK buy have been left feeling unfortunately ill. Also a 30 minute wait for a take away murtabak is just ridiculous. Will not be going back ever!

It's been more than 3 years since I've been to this spot as both my wife and I thought the previous business had closed and thus did not know that Bala had taken over the lease and now runs Rasa Sayang Cafe serving real value Malaysian Indian food.

We went for lunch today around noon and as soon as I walked in, I could smell the curries and briyani - a very good sign. The nice young lady explained to us how the menu worked and my wife ordered the Masala Thosai while I had to get my Chicken Briyani fix after all the nostalgic spice scents that had wafted through the cafe when I first walked in.

My Chicken Briyani order was the 'Choice of 1 meat and vegetables' for $10, comes with a large papadum and was served on a plate shaped like a banana leaf. That was more than enough for a big eater like me but hungry people may go for the 2 or even 3 meats option. The main aspect of Briyani is the rice and this was soft and fluffy but full of great flavour. Thumb up! I had picked the 'hottest' chicken and it was fabulous! Real spice here that marinated the chicken and was cooked to perfection. If I'm honest, I'd prefer more fleshy cuts with less bone but this was exactly the same as when I was in KL.

My wife's Masala Thosai arrived in a few minutes and was a good size - well protruding off both sides of her plate. This was filled with a delicious combination of peas, carrots, corn, potatoes, curry leaves and spices! With two curries for dipping that came with the plate, she thought it was more than enough and reported the Thosai was
very nice. We learnt later that we could have taken from any of the curries laid out on the right side of the counter!

We are going back tomorrow night to try their Soup Kambing, Teh Tarik and Teh Halia. Oh and on the weekend, we're going to try their Roti Canai, Nasi Lemak and Vadai!

Simply awesome. I'm from Malaysia, and I can say hands down this is the best place I've been so far in Perth that offers good authentic KL indian style Tucker. It's a no frills, good honest and flavoursom meal at a reasonable price.ummm reminds me of home... Rasa sayang eh rasa sayang sayang eh..:)

Went on thurs evening, no large crowd so we got our food pretty quickly. Had plain and onion&egg roti, they were good! Teh Tarik was authentic too, like those u get in Msia. Quite an extensive menu! Would go back

Yummy home cooked food. This little gem of a place is where I frequent when I am craving home cooked Malaysian Indian food. Tastes good, portions are huge and it's pretty cheap too.

Best Biryani. Do yourself a favour and go to Spencer Village and next to the bakery is the best curry house in WA.
Ask for a biryani and pick a curry or two from the range in the bain marie, add some veggies and top it off with some pickles and a papadum. Curry lovers will experience an epiphany.
The problem is now you will just want to keep on coming back.
Expect the unexpected but don't expect a vindaloo....

Best Malaysian Indian Food. It is known that a home cook meal is always the best meal a person could have and after eating at Rasa Sayang Cafe, you would feel that way because it is the Best place you can go for the Best Authentic Malaysian Indian Food in Perth. It is a unique and satisfying experience anyone could have after a superb meal. Compliment to the Chef for the Best Indian Malaysian Food!!!!!

Good food but..... The chef, Bala is a good cook and there are no complaints about his food. Its authentic Msian Indian cooking. The portions however are really sad, esp when you do a takeaway. The female staff esp do not apportion the food well, the food isnt cheap and so you'd expect proper portions. The chef when serving does a much better job. Love the food but hate he portions !

-----20 Mar, 2012-----

Great M'sian Indian food. It is definetly one of the best I've had in Perth. Authentic Malaysian Indian cooking. Bala the cook is a friendly chap and great customer service.

For the best Southern Indian food in Perth, this is the place!!!. You just have to look at the crowds that come in. They're Asians, they're white Australians. For too long when it comes to Indian food, people think of the Northern Indian/British fare - chicken tikka, butter chicken etc.

This is South Indian food here and it's South Indian food with BALLS! That is, it's not watered down or Australianized. It's the real thing that puts hairs on your chest and lead in your pencil :-).

I'd recommend the murtabak, the chicken paratal and the chicken varuval. In fact anything either ala carte or bain marie is delicious. And the best part is that it's not over priced at all. Bit of a drive to Thornlie perhaps but I know people who drive to here from Fremantle!

And lastly, no, this is an unbiased opinion, I'm not related to anyone in the cafe at all.
The Halal Food Project
Regardless, what we had was satisfying (LARGE portion of rice and dishes) and tasty. There is a table full of complimentary condiments including mango chutney, fried yoghurt chillies, and papadums.

I am glad that I have tried another place in my goal to try every stall at Spencer village but I probably won’t be back to Cafe Rasa Sayang, It’s not that there was anything particularly bad about it but its more the fact that personally for me there isn’t anything that will have me thinking about this meal in the days/weeks/years to come.
