Review Hongkies - Perth

Have been waiting 45 minutes now for my take away and just saw another table complain about their meals coming out all in 10-15 minute intervals. Definitely need more staff on in the kitchen for a Saturday night if you want to give great service. Really hoping the food is worth the wait. Edit: Nope.. food is terrible. Mushy noodles and flavourless sauces. Watery veg which couldn’t have been fresh. Went straight in the bin I’m all for supporting smaller businesses but you have to up your game!

Been a regular for years, good service & food is always delicious. Always been my daughter’s go to Tea Cafe for Pork Chop Rice with Lisbon Sauce. Give it a try if you are into Cantonese Hong Kong style cuisine. Will not disappoint!

We decided this is the last time we visit this place. We ordered $13.8 Peking Ribs with rice, $14.8 baked rice in creamy sauce with chicken fillet. When the server put the Peking ribs on the table I couldn’t believe what I see. Few pieces of pork meat and rice?! That’s it Nothing else?? I don’t have high expectation for this place and I’ve been there for quite a few times already but the recent experience were too underwhelming made me spend all this time to post a common. the take away last time and the food we had today it’s very very disappointing. As a female, the portion size is not even enough for me...the portion of the take away is even smaller...and the taste of 梅菜扣肉飯...just avoid it! Disgust. The pineapple fry rice were average. Sorry I forgot to take the pictures for you guys reference. I really wish this restaurant can do better and thrive as a Hong konger. but for now we’d stay away from it

Their food were less than average and the service was bad. The prawn dumplings skin was very thick and the bread for pork chop roll was very hard. Also, they don’t have any sign regarding payment surcharge but they did surcharge us!!!

This restaurant offers a very extensive menu of Hong Kong tea cafe comfort foods including stir fries, sizzling dishes, noodles, rice dishes, snacks - from individual portions to sharing plates it has plenty to choose from. The food is good if not pretty standard. If you're craving Hong Kong tea cafe style treats that'll satisfy your appetite, this place fits the bill. However, the Hong Kong style drinks we had were pretty average, with average tasting tea and lack of good tea and coffee flavour in the cold Yuen Yeung. The venue has quite a lot of internal seating including table and booth style seating, and with Hong Kong memorabilia throughout, this makes for an inviting experience.

The interior is funky and the murals on the wall pay a homage to hong kong. The male tiolet felt slighty dodgy, like them dodgy alleyways in hong kong away from the neon signs. Customer service didn't really come with a smile but it was expedient and welcoming nethertheless. We tried the fried squid. It was tasty, fresh and lightly chilly, albeit somewhat salty. The main was braised beef and chicken both of which were generously portioned and more importantly was delicious when supplemented with white rice. For dessert we tried fried bun with red beans and ice cream. It was good if you have a sweet tooth, unfortunately a bit too sweet for me. Overall worthy place to visit and try it out.

First time tonight and I loved all the flavours in the food. Great service and love the booths

Very good HK milk tea about 80% HK standard, the bo lo bao not bad, the wan tan mee noodles is too fat not HK standard. Overall is good at Perth. The CCD with nonstop Cantonese medley.

Lured in for lunch by the cheap prices advertised in the window. Three of us shared a fried noodles, honey chicken and sweet and sour pork all tiny portions. The chicken and pork were mostly deep fried batter with a tiny amount of meat inside. Noodles were tasty but small portion. No drinks but still came to $60 for the 3 dishes, this isn't fine dining so shouldn't be paying high prices. Practically have to walk through the kitchen to get to the toilet, neither were particularly clean and there was cigarette smoke wafting through from the tables at the back I presume? Not going back again :0(

Came all the way from home to redeem this offer but was told that this is not available.
Only available at dinner time. I do understand you have t&c for offers but this is not stated anyway in the email nor any t&c.
It’s such a waste of time and the worse part is their dinner menu and lunch menu are the same, just that they claimed that there were busier during lunch time. By the way, we went at 2pm. Only a few tables at that time. I just don’t understand why they would like to lose customers in that way and disappoint customer in something that that would just honour it easily.
On the other hand, be careful with their pricing. The pricing on this shop is strange, I ordered something at $7.9 and was charge $8.9. Upon questioning, they pull up another menu with exact the same thing but different price. So confusing and misleading? But all in all their food is ok. Anyway. If you are craving for HK food, the one newly open in Victoria park gives better customer service.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
Northbridge has no shortage of Asian food options. They’re everywhere, so if you’re not sure what you want it’s easy to just take a wander and look for yourself. We did that and ended up at Hongkies as Mlady wanted some dump load part of our dinner. Hongkies is a casual quirky place with a nice relaxed feel to it. You feel comfortable the minute you walk in the door. We scored a booth and ordered some drinks to get the show on the road.

I went along, on a wet and miserable day, to one of my favourite Chinese nosheries in Northbridge – Hongkies, which specialises in Chinese food with a Hong Kong twist, with influences of Britain and Portugal, especially, shining though. But on this occasion, under the suggestion of owner Flora, we decided to try a fairly new entrant to the menu – a mini Yum Cha of seafood – and delightful it turned out to be, and excellent value to boot.

Simple Hong Kong eatery food. Stir fried noodles, baked rices and drinks. Really like the beef hofun and lemon tea. No fuss place but good food and good service

Everything you would expect from a HK style tea cafe. It’s where you would go for a quick bite and it doesn’t disappoint. Love their baked rice, very creamy and tasty.
Food Mania
We always go there to eat baked creamy pork or chicken with fried rice. Environment is very Hongkies style. Service is alright. Staff is friendly. I like those dishes.

Perfect for all your dim sum favourites, without all the hustle and bustle, or queuing.
Friendly and attentive staff, without being pushy. The food was high quality, and delicious. The portion sizes were good, meaning that even though the dishes are more expensive than the regular dim sum places, you don’t end up needing as many serves to fill you (and no overeating).

Nice ambience but food was just alright. We had the chicken corn soup, squid tentacles, spring rolls, veg in oyster sauce, pork dumplings in chilli oil, shanghai dumplings, beef noodles, pork with preserved vegetables, chicken bao and fried red bean bun with ice cream for dessert. None of the dishes stood out but the food wasn't bad. We managed to finish most of it just cause we ordered too much 😅
Melburnianlaura
The staff was lovely and friendly, food was about what you'd expect for dumplings etc. It was really quiet (expected on a Tuesday night). They didn't have a lot of things that were on the menu which was kind of annoying. Probably wouldn't go again.

Hongkies replaced Joy Cafe a few years back and the food hasn't been able to measure up.

Steamed chicken 🐥 was a massive let down. All the pieces were dry and not marinated enough. The wishy washy ginger and onion soy dressing didn't help either, mediocre at best.

Szechuan chilli chicken wings 🍗 were average, they seemed to have been fried and tossed in a sticky sauce. The wings weren't bad, they just weren't spicy enough.

Spicy wonton 🌶 was more like salty wonton. Dumplings were silky smooth, sauce was great with a good amount of heat but also really salty.

Thanks to dimmi we managed to get 50% off, probably wouldn't be too happy if we had to pay full price.

PS: I really miss the cheerful uncle and aunty that ran Joy Cafe, especially their gingery Steamed Chicken & epic Crazy Chilli Chicken 😕. Ah well.

We have been here a couple of times. Food is always good, however portion is getting smaller?! I think the portion should be a bit bigger with the price we are paying, especially the beef brisket noodles. Service is always good.

Portions here are large, like the baked rice I ordered which had quite a bit of rice and a huge pork chop. It was creamy, cheesy and tasty but the pork chop was somewhat dry. The seaweed cuttlefish ball noodle soup looked really homemade and tasted average, will not recommend getting that noodle dish

Tried the baked rice and teppan pork/chicken chop here. The baked rice was everything you'd expect: creamy, hot and flavourful. I was a bit let down by the pork chop, I felt the sauce could have been better and lacked both umami and spice.

Service is efficient and friendly. I would like to try the dim sum and bao if I make another visit.

Went there for dinner with a large group. The food was nice enough, had some crispy chicken. Some of my friends were a little disappointed with their meals. Nothing spectacular but not disappointing. Seating could be improved

I did not find the food or décor particularly Chinese. Perhaps modified to fulfill westerners' taste, hence other reviewers seemingly liked the food. However, totally unimpressed with the food quality (the toughest squid, glutinous cornflower laden noodles, and clawing deep fried prawns. This place would die a culinary death in Hong Kong.

We came here at around 8pm after a fringe show. There was 5 of us and we ordered quite a lot of food. We ordered dim sums, bao, dumplings and Singapore noodles and it came to $16 each! So cheap and the food was really good. Will definitely come here again :)

Service was great. Ordered the lunch set as well as the famous Hong Kong style Coca-Cola chicken wing. The lunch set was most valuable in the whole menu. The rest of the food pricing was rather high.

Nice food and reasonable price. Helpful staff. A place I love to chill with my kids. This place cured my homesickness of Hong Kong where I grew up. Recommend their iced milk tea and sizzling steak.

This is quite a good Hong Kong style restaurant. Most of their baked dish are quite good - pork chop based rice with creamy sauce would be perfect if the pork can be slight thicker slice to improve the texture. Hong Kong-style milk tea can be improved if tea taste stronger. Beef Fried Ho Fun is perfect and won our hearts!

A pretty good Hong Kong style restaurant. We don’t have this food style a lot here in perth but I think they’re quite good. First time trying here, the place is quite cosy and the staffs are friendly too. We tried the chilli dumplings to start with and it was flavourful. The Peking spare ribs and sizzling Japanese tofu and chicken were also tasty and comes in a good portion. We had a winner with their baked dish at this visit - it is the pork chop baked rice with creamy sauce that wins us over. Since they have quite a large selection of menu, we might come back and try other baked dishes next time.

Came here for dessert and enjoyed every bit of it! The food is very HongKong though the pineapple bun I (think it’s called) fell flat for me. Other than that the food and drinks taste very authentic and would love to dine here again and try this place for dinner

Came here for dinner, Saturday night. Best meal I've had out in a long time! Squid tentacles and peanut butter French toast are a must when dining here also the sizzling steak!! Will defiantly be back for sure.

We went in at around 4pm on a Saturday, when every where else closed. This place is vibe n comfortable, friendly service even though it was quite busy at the time. We had a ice tea and it was so refreshing, according to the waitress this ice tea was freshly brewed every 2-3 hours. The club sandwich was amazing, with thick omelette, very tender pork chop n cheese, great taste! Will definitely go back to try the lunch or dinner.

A very authentic Hong Kong style setup, ordered their baked cheese rice with chicken and it came out in a very large portion. The chicken chop served was very huge and nice but the rice wasn't really covered with a lot of cheese on top.

We also ordered the spicy dumpling, tasted okay. Ginger Coke was quite a let down as we couldn't really taste the ginger inside the Coke. Overall I would say it's not bad and this is a place which I will come back again for Hong Kong foods.

Great restaurant! Nice decor at the restaurant! We went around 730pm on a Sunday night and the place was not too busy.

I ordered the Portuguese baked cheesy rice with pork (chicken is the other option) and did not disappoint! Very rich and delicious! Just think of a mild curry and add cheese to it! Washed it down with a lemon tea!

Good value and will come again! Great little eatery!

This place is new, taking over the previous place that provided the same cuisine.

The renovations make this place more interesting and inviting to the younger crowds. The menu appeals to the hong kong people who want a taste of familiarity.

The baked rice dishes are my favourite with the cheesy toppings. The hk milk tea is authentic and worth trying.

If you've been to Hong Kong before and know what a typical tea cafe is, this place is worth a visit.
