Review Open By Duotone - Perth

Magnificent coffee as always! Great choice for someone who can't have regular dairy. Tried two bingsu's (caramel and chocolate), both terrific. I favoured the chocolate due to have a sweet tooth, but partner preferred the caramel. Will keep visiting to try the menu further.

One of my top 10 cafes in my opinion. Coffee is good, friendly staff and their sweets and pastries are always top notch. I love the aesthetics of the cafe and the convenient location.

I only came here for the coffee so I didn’t know their food was so good. The Mushroom and chesse toasty is a must! The tiramisu cheesecake is not too sweet, enough for a sugar boost in the morning. I’ll be coming back to try out more food.

This place is great / amazing. Excellent friendly staff, coffee is great with a good bean rotation and the breakfast menu is very tasty. I've been trying to not go every morning these past few days but can't help myself. Great vegetarian options too.

We've been here a few times and we'll be returning. The food is really good. Shakshuka was so flavourful and not heavy. The chocolate drink had a lovely chocolate flavour. Staff are very friendly.

What a great place! I came here just after they opened on a Saturday morning and was well looked after. It has a great vibe, with greenery and some nice sunny places to sit outside. The coffee is great, and the music was really cool too; awesome mix of older and modern soul. I had the miso-infused scrambled eggs and they were super yum! The staff were friendly.and attentive but not intrusive. Can't ask for anything better! Looking for an excuse to come back...

Excellent, went here for breakfast and thoroughly enjoyed the meals. Highly recommend the chilli crab crossaint - such a unique & delicious dish. Great drinks (we tried the matcha tea). Amazing crossaint selections for dessert (think matcha raspberry, passionfruit, acai berry, almond flavours), or cakes too. Happy with the prices, the mains were between $17 and $25 Funky indoor and outdoor area & friendly staff

A very pretty place, made for instagram. Lovely ambience, lovely decor, great calm and modern place to catch up with someone or read a newspaper, or do some freelance work. Even the lighting makes photos look good. I'd come back for the hash brisket, something different from menu, one of the fancy drinks, the ambience and maybe the matcha. So the menu on the website is slightly different to the menu in the store. More accurate in the website. E.g. It says beef brisket on the menu. On the website, and in real like the dish is actually Korean bulgogi marinade beef brisket. To be honest I couldn't tell the difference with frozen Korean BBQ meats. That's not a bad thing, because that stuff is delicious. Excellent decision for a brunch place with an Asian edge. Big hearty dish. Crispy hash potato, this dish was the fav. 4/5. Passionfruit crossaint thing. Was good, looked better than it tasted. 3/5 I asked if they could show me their matcha because I don't like it with sugar. They didn't want to but said there wasn't sugar. Then I went to the other Duotone a few days after and the girl said they make their own matcha latte mix and it is mixed with coconut sugar. Oh. That's why it tastes sweet. Not too sweet but I would've preferred more matcha less sweet. 3/5 I bought a matcha crossaint the time I went to the west Perth place a few days after. And it was not very good. Stale and not fresh. 2/5

Open by Duotone is a large spacious cafe with plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, located just outside of the Perth CBD.

Visiting for a quick breakfast I couldn’t go past the croissants. After much deliberation I decided to order the matcha raspberry croissant along with the hot caramel macchiato to drink. The croissant was nice and flaky on top with a lovely matcha raspberry filling inside that wasn’t overly sweet. Whilst the macchiato was quite sweet and ideal for a sweet tooth.

I enjoyed my breakfast and appreciated the lovely hospitality at Open by Duotone. I rate it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ out of 5 and recommend checking it out if you’re in the area.

I have not had such delicious breakfast in a long time! The beef brisket was an absolute winner! My cousin had Benedict eggs and she absolutely loved them. We shared an apple and cinnamon croissant and it was just great. I’m so glad I found another gem in my hood, highly recommended!

3.5 rating.
have been to Open twice now for brunch, the visits being approximately 3 months apart.

the first time we had the eggs benny and a matcha croissant, and the second the chilli crab scrambled eggs croissant dish and another matcha croissant.

the eggs benny was really average, and although the eggs were poached as requested and the dish plated up well, the hollandaise was a real let-down in terms of flavour. the chilli crab eggs unfortunately came with fake crab, which was a disappointment, but the eggs were again cooked well.

coffees here always come with fun latte art, and the matcha drinks and croissants are always a winner.

service is also always really lovely.

i’ll be back, but only for the matcha items, which is what duotone are well-known for.

Excellent service and food. A bit overpriced for some dishes in terms of portion eg. The french toast with seasonal fruit, I only got one small slice of brioche when normally in other cafes they will serve you with 2 slices. Was not worth the $20+. However overall ambience and service is great. Will come again.

Arrived at 2:30 and was told that even though kitchen closed at 2pm they would be happy to cook something up for us. That is what I call amazing customer service. Food was delicious as well.
Queen Of Bad Timing
Delicious spot for breakfast - love the eggs benedict and the miso scrambled eggs. Really keen to go back for lunch or dinner soon as there are some amazing sounding dishes.
More Than Nourishment
I have recently come here twice. Nice simple clean decor. The first time was for breakfast. Had the chicken burger, granola, eggplant tempura with soba noodles and acai smoothie. Enjoyed very dish although the granola portion was a little small. Loved their matcha latte.. as good as the original duotone. Because breakfast was so good, we decided to come back for dinner. Surprisingly we were the only ones initially for a Saturday night before another table came in an hour later for coffee and cake. We enjoyed the sharing entree dishes more compared to the mains (duck breast and kingfish). We felt the mains were more on the ordinary side although tasty. Highlights were the fried chicken with rice cakes and kimchi pancakes. Would come back and just order those dishes!

Great setting and friendly excellent service. Came here for dinner. The coffee duck breast was beautiful, kimchi paella was nice but my favorite were the teriyaki salmon steak (awesome flavors) and miso mushrooms!

Love the ambience of this cafe! There were tables both outside and inside but we decided to sit inside cause it was cooler. The staff were very friendly here. Food was good but not outstanding - maybe it’s because I came with high expectations from what I’ve heard about the sister cafe Duotone. The portions were ok but slightly small for the shakshuka. The presentation of the dishes was lovely

Came here on Friday. The place was cute, presentation beautiful and portions decent to the pricing. The staff were nice and friendly though they must be new, or have not received enough direction from management as there were a few rookie mistakes. I asked for an ice tea off the drinks menu when ordering, and was told it didn’t exist. Which I thought was quite strange for it to be on a menu of a relatively new establishment. When I asked for it the staff seemed quite baffled and confused at my request, as if they didn’t know it existed or they hadn’t been informed by management that it would no longer be sold. I thought this was strange. The staff seemed just as confused as I was. I ordered 2 lemon lime bitters instead. These were the bottled cascade type lemon lime bitters that are served with glasses of ice. After waiting a good few minutes we figured they’d forgotten our drinks. It was even more obvious with the staff continuing with other tasks as the restaurant was sort of quiet. As well as at the startled a-ha moment of the staff who hurried to get the ice and glasses after noticing we kept looking over. I work in hospitality so the mistake didn’t really bother me, but the staff played it off as if it was intentional and didn’t apologise for forgetting. My partners food was first to arrive, close to 10 minutes before mine. I found this very strange, as we had only ordered two dishes, and it was clear they were for the both of us. If one dish takes less time to make than the other, why not start making it later so they could come at the same time? I also noticed my meal had been sitting in the window for a few minutes before being served. The kitchen staff belled for the FOH to serve it about 3 times. There were only two FOH staff working so if there were suddenly a few tasks arising at the same time, this was understandable. However, the staff seemed to continue with other tasks in a very relaxed manner as if the chef hadn’t belled almost angrily by the third time. The FOH acknowledged it was waiting in the window, though didn’t hurry/seem fazed. We also didn’t receive much of an apology for the lateness, and again was played off as if it was intentional. It was a difficult feeling as the staff made a few easily avoided mistakes, but were also really nice and friendly. Very confusing. I thought the food was lovely and still a good cafe, but the staff and operations of the business definitely could be improved.

Went there for dinner on a Saturday. Ordered salad, bao, king fish, and wagyu beef. The chicken inside the bao is like chicken nugget and the bun is very soft and fluffy. Portion size of king fish was a little small but tasted really nice. Everything tasted good and service was good and food came out quickly. The cocktail I ordered is called open sesame, was really nice however I couldn’t taste the alcohol.

We went when they first opened, and I feel like it was a little overhyped. The omurice was good, but wasn’t amazing, probably had a little too much veggie. It’s still definitely a good brunch place though. They also had bullet coffee (coffee with organic butter, meant to be healthy for you), but it didn’t taste too good honestly haha. Unique though.

The service was great, we loved the funny lighthearted waiters.

Looking at the new menu now, it seems like I might need to give it a second go :)

What a great place! We have been here a couple of times now. The first time was after dinner one evening. We had their desserts and drinks. Their Matcha tiramisu was amazing! I’m someone that isn’t crazy for matcha, but i will come back for this. The espresso martini is definitely the best I have ever had. It wasn’t syrupy and sweet like most places. You could taste the coffee and it was an amazing blend. Second time we came was for lunch. We hade the Omurice and the chicken karaage burger. Both were delicious. I really liked the demiglaze with mushrooms on the omurice. The chicken in the burger was delicious! Crunch and not overcooked. Very generous servings. They also had Yuzu slushi with bitters. It was very tasty. Love the citrusy flavours that come through. Would love to try the alcoholic version next time. Great service, great place.
Foodie In Paradise
We came here for brunch on a weekday for the first time, then noticed their weekday breakfast menu was quite limited. I really like the matcha latte here. Food taste pretty average. There have a lot of Asian or matcha infused dessert which I would like to come back to try out. Service was friendly.
