Review Ohnamiya Japanese Myaree - Perth

Annie L
Cheap and delicious Japanese place. It's almost as if its a staple for those who love Japanese food and live near the area. Had their salmon don and takoyaki. They were satisfyingly delicious. We were there once to celebrate a friend's birthday and they charge $2 per person corkage fee for cake. Which is understandable but pricey as there were 8 of us and I was paying šŸ˜„

Food was served promptly and hot! Portion was good and taste was delicious. The curry fish katsu was crispy on the outside and soft when you bit through. Curry was flavourful and resembled what we had in Japan. The Bento is very value for money and we left happy and fulfilled!

Nice tasty food. Good for families. I allllways get the teriyaki fish bowl. Yum! The restaurant is always busy, theres no table service so be sure to order at the til.
Jordan Lee
This thinly sliced pathetic amount of salmon on rice and onion cost $11.50. standards have definitely dropped drastically from the last time we were there. We used to visit every week. Never again.

I understand that the price of groceries and essentials have increased lately but the amount of sesame chicken I received in my karagge DELUXE box was ridiculous. 3 pieces thinly sliced and 2 shredded pieces. The standards and quality and amount has definitely deteriorated since a few years back. Used to be one of my go to for Japanese but not anymore. Very disappointed.

The food is okay, it's yummy, cooked perfectly and the portion is good. Great comfort food.

This place has been so consistent with their food. Have been going to their original place in applecross more then 20 years ago and it still tastes the same. If you want good value, tasty japanese without the frills then you need to come here. Their assortment of bento šŸ± boxes and bento types surely is amazing. Plus oh so tasty!! Ah Maz ing!!! Bang for your buck!!

Delicious Japanese food at reasonable prices šŸ‘šŸ‘

Went for dinner and was surprised by the decor and no table service. Food was cheap compared to our usual and hubby was a fan of his sushi and takoyaki. Daughter and I had the teriyaki chicken and while she enjoy it I found the sauce very watery and lacking flavour. Portions were small but I guess you get what you pay for. Service was what I expected,

Went on a Sat night, place was mostly packed. We ordered the toro salmon sashimi, tuna avocado roll, teriyaki chicken and teriyaki beef bento boxes. Sushi and sashimi were fresh and the meats were deliciously soft and juicy. Service was great and we didn't have to wait long. Solid recommendation, although food may be pricey for some.

Ordered a main course Teriyaki Chicken , dish arrived , very small size serve of chicken and some lettuce, waited patiently for my rice which never came, enquired but was told rice would be another $2.50 extra on top of the $11.50 Iā€™ve already paid... never been to a Japanese place where rice isnā€™t served with a main course... very cheeky.
Left hungry and feeling ripped off..had to go somewhere else .
Very disappointing experience and will never ever return, back to my fav Jap place Oceans in Freo
Karina
I like that we can customise different set, ranging from rice bowl to bento. The main dish itself is average. I still go here often though coz it's convenientl, easy ordering

We enjoyed the food. Itā€™s nice and reasonably priced. Free green tea available. I had the katsu chicken and itā€™s pretty good. We also ordered egg, prawn, tobiko, California and chicken roll - all are not bad.
Highuci Shota
Went there on Wednesday Lunch.

When I first walked in I could smell something is not right... As I sat I quickly realized our table is smelly.... probably because they are using smelly cloth to wipe the tables....
Ordered veg tempura udon, Delux chicken bento, eel roll and salmon avocado rolls. The service was shocking. When the waitress brought over the Veg tempura udon, her long finger nail was dipped in the soup.... and when she brought over Chicken delux bento I can see there is some food scraps on her nails! Level of the hygiene in restaurant is really not up to the standard.... Even I wanted to complain manager isn't around.... or is she the one?!Ā

Sauce is very salty, sushi rice was VERY over cooked and mushy. Didn't taste the vinegar at all.

Not coming back. I'd rather go to Sunday's everyday across the street. Much better quality overall.
Eunice
Been here quite a number of time, very affordable and tasty bentos. A whole lot of variety to choose from the menu! My favourites were Karaage chicken bento box (with plenty of yummy seasoning), assorted sashimi, and their eel roll. Why not finish off with nice mochi balls and green tea panna cotta? You just gotta give it a go! :)

Ordered the toro salmon sashimi and it was the most horrible sashimi portion Iā€™ve ever seen. In fact, I wouldnā€™t call it salmon sashimi as the cuts were more like portions of sliced ham. Itā€™s one thing to be value-for-money, but another to totally butcher a dish that would definitely make any Japanese food lover go into rage mode. Will never return.

Taste is ok but portion is absolutely horrible. Portions for a child. Ordered the aburi Toro salmon nigiri for $8.90 . THREE pieces of sushi arrived with just about the thinnest slice of salmon on any piece of sushi I have ever seen. I consider this an absurd ripoff. Heed my advice and have you meal elsewhere, the meal here not only leaves you hungry, you feel cheated as well. Never again.

Food is ok , pretty ordinary Japanese restaurant. Iā€™m disappointed with the salmon bowl i ordered.. hardly find any salmon. Teriyaki beef is ok.. nothing special.
Foodie In Paradise
First time coming to this branch in Myaree, food was very average. The branch in Ardross seems to have better food even though the menu is the same.
Hulo S
Good without being great. The portion size is medium and slightly more pricier than Sundays Myaree however the presentation is exquisite and definitely a more elaborate dining experience. I got the Katsu Chicken which was hot and crispy which was similar to what I have tried in Japan. Atmosphere was dull and gloomy and could do with more lighting and possibly some complimenting music.
Fan Fan Fantastic
Lunch bar atmosphere, food were average food. The unagi don was expensive, $20 something only can get couple pieces chewy and hard unagi. The key point was the staff was not friendly and helpful. Won't come back.
Erin Eats
This is great value for a quick Japanese meal. You feel guilty lingering for long here when it is so busy, and the staff do their best to manage the waiting time and service. We ordered the sushi bento set. The teriyaki salmon and beef were okay, but the accompanying sushi was fresh and delicious. It has a cosy and casual feel.
BREAKFASTforever
Ohnamiya Myaree is as consistent as the Applecross outlet - good food, friendly service, and very reasonable price. It's nice to visit the Myaree outlet as they have a lot more room to move than Applecross (and as a bonus it's right next to Yee Seng so you can your pick up Asian groceries while you're there too!)
Sesel
Nice Japanese food. Good value and generous servings. Lots of choices with their boxes. Plenty of variety and a good feed, even if you don't have Japanese often.
LittleAsianGirl
The food here is not bad. Great for small and larger groups. The teriyaki salmon rice box is quite tasty! They put some seasoning on the rice which was yummy. The fish katsu was also not bad. We also ordered the miso soup (note they come in a small and large size which is a bonus for me because I love miso soup!). Price is quite reasonable considering the serving size. Would come back and try their sushi. They have an extensive menu.
Monmon
We tried the one in Applecross and expect the one in Myaree has the same quality and taste but a little bit disappointed because it is different. We asked the lady in Applecross they says it's the same owner. When we got in, the place did not smell pleasant and the food taste was below our expectation. We liked the one in Applecross better.

Maybe that day was not our lucky day. We will come back next time and give it another shot.

I like the CONCEPT of choosing the different size of your meal depending on what you feel like eating. In Ohnamiya, every meal comes in different option: whether you just want the main, with rice only, or in a sushi box, deluxe box and so on. It allows flexibility as different people may have different hungry level.
I like Ohnamiya ā€“ itā€™s simple, homey, and reasonably price Japanese cuisine. Their taste is not too bad either, although one or two times you may encounter a rather salty meal (mind the consistency) - which you can just ask them to replace. My favorite would be the Karaage Chicken and Teriyaki Fish (usually I ordered the Rice Box at $9.80 and $11 respectively). Portion is average.

Edit: Tried the Karaage Chicken Chilli Don ā€“ it is officially my favorite now. Soft chicken packed in variety of flavour!

Located in Hulme Court allows plenty of carparking with Utopia just next door if you feel like bubble tea. If not, do try their Panna Cotta ā€“ itā€™s small but only for $6. It is quite worth it.
Lunarcry
Good place to turn to for decent affordable Japanese. I had the chicken karaage deluxe box set which came along with some sushi, salad, tofu, egg and chicken. Generous servings for the price we paid.
Pete Himself
Fresh and tasty Japanese food. I like both their set menu and sushi. Never a complaint and they often have new dishes on their menu. The food reminds me of take aways in Tokyo. The seasoning on the rice is really good and the staff are always friendly. Free green tea is also a bonus. The Applecross store is just as good.
Evonne
Same prices and similar cooking style to Ohnamiya Applex, which means pretty good. I think they really fall down with interior design. Decor isn't as nice and the last time I went, it was a bit smelly - in a non-food way... I think they could really benefit from renovating their interior. Counter was recently moved, probably to improve staff flow, but I think a counter should remain at the front.. People walking through tables to the back of the shop to pick up take away really brings the whole atmosphere down. A small lectern at the front where people can wait to be served or seated would probably suffice to improve the atmosphere in the remainder of the restuarant.

This place never fails to impress me. Only if it was close to where I live, I would come here every day! My favorite is Teriyaki Salmon Chili don, so many pieces of Salmon for $10.80, such a good value! You can even ask for seasoning on the rice without additional charge.
Foodlover And Critic
Always here for a weekly feed, however I ordered my favourite teriyaki salmon chilli don, which is great. But Friday the salmon was very dry, very disappointed.
I called up the store and they apologised, and told me I should ask for the manager next time, however instead they should've just told me they would replace that with a new one next time. Not impressed with that customer service..
In applecross I complained once and they gave me a replacement straight away for next time.
I would come back and hopefully they would have considered the message that comes across.

Love my local jap place. Great value for money and location to fit many diners. Nice family atmosphere and delicious food. I always go the fish Katsu rice box. There is also free green tea for dine in. Very quick service and lovely servers to greet you.

Was south of the river yesterday and decided to pick up some dinner enroute home. It's been awhile since I was last at Hulme court and as I wasn't in the mood for Chinese food, went with Japanese instead.

A quick browse of the takeaway menu convinced me to place an order. Average price per dish is $13 for cooked bento sets, $5 for sushi rolls, and $15.50 for salmon/tuna don. Sashimi starts from around $20.

The deluxe box with agedashi tofu had nice flavours and generous serves. The salmon/tuna Don was a tad on the just unfrozen side but still passed the grade. Loved the karaage and mixed sushi rice bento. The tamago roll had mayo and cucumber in it, which is a variation from the norm.

Good value for a mid week takeaway or dine in meal.
The Perth Brunch Blonde
My go-to for good affordable home-style Japanese food. Have been a loyal patron of Ohnamiya ( both Myaree and Nedlands branches ) since I discovered it in my Uni days. Their rice boxes are substantial and the assorted sashimi ( large for only $21! ) is a real treat. I especially love their green tea panna cotta. It always has the perfect, wobbly texture and is sweet and creamy. Love Ohnamiya!
Annie Erdtsieck
Delicious food! Quickly served with a smile.

make sure Ā to have the pannacotta - creamy with that 'wobble'. Could Ā have had another.

Highly recommended
EnjoyinGodsBlessing
I've been going to ohnamiya since uni... Glad they opened another branch here with more seating and space.. All time favourite is the karaage J bento box with the chirashi rice :) green panacotta is also a must
FoodieQueen
I like this place for fast japanese food. Cheap and hasn't disappointed yet. Love the efficient service! Love the bento box choices and always with seasoned rice. Green tea pannacotta was really smooth as well.
Family Of 5
Restaurant dirty. Table sticky. Food portions really small the large sizes purchased were not large. Miso tasteless and seaweed tasted bad and was like rubber. Ā Purchased Rice portions so small. Ā Salmon Nigeri not on the menu and they didn't know what I was asking for. Ā The salad nice but the pickles not edible. Ā The other chicken dishes we did get were tasty. Ā sorry I went as it wasn't a good experience.
Inexology
We always experienced a good service from the staff at Ohnamiya Myaree. It was always very easy to find a spot to dine in compared to the Applecross outlet. Food has been quite consistent. My favourite order was beef yakiniku with mixed sushi rice, especially since the rice itself consists of eggs, avocado and chicken. Ā

The range of price is suitable with the amount of food they served. Ā It is a good place to have a group dinner and family meal, especially with unlimited flow of hot green tea.Ā The take-away service was really good as well especially since the longest I waited for my takeaway food was about 15 minutes.

Love all the japanese menu in here..! Love the karage set, salmon don especially their Green Tea Panna cotta ! So moist and yummy ;)!

Tips:
If u come during dinner, i suggest u come early at 5.30 or 6pm.

What has happened to this place? I remember coming here 2-3 times a week about a year ago. I've recently had 3 consecutive bad experiences with the food here, the dishes which I always order just do not look and taste the same, leading me to believe there may be a new chef?

I will return in a few months to see if things revert back by some miracle. Such a shame.
Funkymunky
Okay.. The free green tea was a nice surprise, however the choice of sushi in the bento box was a little meh. Would have to try the sashimi and raw sushi choices before I can decide whether I like the place.

Teriyaki Salmon Rice Box. Teriyaki Salmon in a Rice Box!

Open hours error. Why show open on good friday when close ? you need to do better if you want to be listed on urbanspoon or maybe urbanspoon need to work with listing to reflect open hours.
Sara
Best Green Tea Pannacotta. The food is very tasty, it is home to the best green tea pannacotta in Perth! I could eat 5 of these myself, if not for the price.
Teriyaki beef, chicken katsu curry, Chilli fish don, terimayo chicken is delish.
Although portions could be bigger, usually they give alot of rice and really little meat.. so my husband hates coming here!
Domenic Chiellini
The portion sizes are too small, compared to other decent Japanese restaurants in the area. Food tasted good however over seasoned with salt. Wouldn't rush back
Yongy
Reasonably priced. I tried this place last week. It is not a flashy looking place. Simple tables and chairs. The food was good for the price you pay. Service was good too considering it was busy. If not for the limited parking in that area, I might go more often.
Ms J
Good Jap Restaurant. Portion isn't big but considered budget for Japanese food. Had Karaage and tasted quite good, probably a little bit too salty?
Free flow of tea, which is good. Service was fast and friendly.

Clean your carpet!. We decided to try this place today because the Urbanspoon ratings of the different Ohnamiya stores are pretty good.

As soon as we walked in for lunch we were greated by a very strong, musky smell that can best be described as dirty carpet. The restaurant was also empty except for one table, but I put that down to the restaurant just opening...

We sat down for about 5 min until we couldn't stand the smell anymore. The restaurant also just looked unclean in general. Then we walked straight out and went to the Japanese restaurant (which was full) across the road, which smelt normal (like food) and the prices were lower.

Unfortunately I can't give a person review on the food. However, I can speak on behalf of my parents who have previously dined here and warned me not to visit this place because the food wasn't nice. I should have listened to them...

Mmmmmiso!. Best miso soup I've ever had!
Kai
Very nice food, clean restaurant, friendly price and reasonable prices. Nothing more to ask for.
Ewong
A humble easy going restuarant which is family friendly. Service was great and pretty efficient. Food is pretty good and flavoursome. Tonight had the chicken karaage deluxe box, teriyaki salmon deluxe box and the large assorted sashimi. However, the Stella dish of the night and a MUST HAVE is their green tea pannacotta! Strange that we have to order and pay first however overall pretty good and would definitely return in the very near future!!
Diner
Nice. Good food at a decent price, can't complain
Clay
Disappointing. After a 40 minute wait for my take away the food was less than fresh.

Paid cash, was not given a receipt, instead was asked for my name. Sat and waited. Name was never called. Finally went and enquired what was happening. Miso soup cups were half filled. Sashimi did not taste fresh. I had expected better. Shame really
Skcapp
Sushi is horrible and not fresh, never again!
Stephanie Lee
You get what you pay for. Ticket price is low but so is the quantity of meat. Quality of food is reasonable but not value for money. In overall, atmosphere and food is just reasonable. Nothing extraordinary.

Great food, great pricing , authentic. I been going to ohnamiya applecross for a long time. been a regular customer there for the last 9 years.
only down side for ohnamiya applecross is they only have very small seating tables inside. so most of the time you have to wait for a table. sometimes a very long time too.
recently they opened a branch in myaree. first i was afraid that the food quality wont be as good as the applecross branch. but they have proven me wrong many times. Food quality is always consistent.

most of the time i order salmon teriyaki bento box. salmon is always fresh, comes with chicken salad which is the best.
i ordered tuna sashimi once too, as tuna sashimi is a rare to find item. most of the time you can only find salmon sashimi. Tuna sashimi came fresh and crunchy.

will be back to try other items in the menu
Jojostar
Great concept of ordering method but the food was just okay. A little overpriced though. Ordered tori udon for $9.80 and when the food came, it was less than 5 pieces of meat in there. Nothing else. Very disappointing .but overall, staff were friendly
Jess
Best value Japanese around. Finally made it to the Myaree store, and am so glad I did! There are several Japanese options in the Myaree/Melville area, and this is the best. Super fresh sushi, crispy katsu, wonderful teriyaki, and free tea! Will definitely be coming back!
Palmyra_girl
Love this place!. Loved the applecross restaurant and I was so happy to see they opened up closer to me. The menu seems the same, and the food was excellent when we visited for Saturday lunch. A dependable, tasty, cheap Japanese option. Will be a top takeaway choice for me for sure!
StuartP
Good food, horrible music. The food food here is very good, but loud intrusive pop music from a blaring radio spoil the ambience, even for casual dining. Shame really as it replaced a lovely friendly Chinese place that I used to go to at least 3 or 4x a month.

Fine for takeaways but a bit unpleasant to sit through the noise.
Quokka
Nice food & atmosphere. It's a pity they don't open for lunch.
Annika Godwin
Great Japanese. Food is comparable to the Applecross restaurant. The atmosphere is a more casual family dining experience, which isn't a bad thing. It's probably not the place to get dressed up for a night out. But definitely still serving yummy, affordable Japanese. Have had a dine-in meal and a takeaway. Tried the katsu curry, kastu rice box and a dessert, all very well presented and satisfying dinner options.
Angela
The food is exactly the same as the Applecross one, i.e. fantastic. The service was excellent as always. I recognised one of the waitresses from the Applecross one working behind the counter. No idea what the other reviewers are talking about. Delicious, well priced Japanese food.
Tim Ng
Unfriendly staff and salty sauce. Fish teriyaki is ok but salty sauce, beef teriyaki is overcooked an very salty.
One japanese staff is unfriendly and bossy, which is unusual for japanese culture.

Food is so so, atmosphere is not welcoming, would i come back? Umm maybe if i am really starving and no other choice.
Twittey888
Just OK. Went to this place a few times for dining in and having take aways after work. I ordered fish teriyaki bento box and teriyaki fish chilli don. The food is on the salty side compared to the well seasoned one from Ohnamiya Applecross. The waitress is very unfriendly and not welcoming. Certainly didn't live up to my expectations.
Donovan De Souza
The quality of Ohnamiya's food was decent enough but its mains were closer to the cheaper, Taka's end of the market - only the entree really stood out for me as being a cut above. With Taka's the price is so cheap that its well within its price point and while Ohnamiya are on the cheaper end of the market, knowing that we have Kai so much closer to us and with better food at very reasonable prices I just can't picture us going to back to Ohnamiya in the near future.
Eat Scout
We picked a range of dishes to share amongst the four of us. The karaage, agadashi tofu and large sashimi plate were all tasty and great value. Most dishes are available with a salad, as a donburi (rice bowl) or as part a bento box. The restaurant has packed in the tables and most of them were full on the Friday night we visited. Ohnamiya is counter-service, BYO and you grab your own glasses from the fridge. Service is friendly and very efficient. 38 Hulme Court, Myaree

Affordable, humble and delicious across the menu - that was evident by the growing line down the centre of Ohnamiya's flagship restaurant in Applecross during dinner service. Before they expanded into their larger, group friendly venue in Myaree, it was very difficult to comfortably seat parties of more than 4 people. Now, I like how I can go to either outlet, order any of my favourite dishes and know that I'm going to be really satisfied with the food. I'm a die hard fan of theirĀ Green Tea Pannacotta ($5.00)Ā - after so many years, I'm still baffled by how something so good can only be $5?!
