Review The Honeycake - Perth

Benedict Uy
The honeycakes are almost like a mille fuille with all the layers but instead of the crunchy puff pastry, you have a sweet honeycake. They have options of original and pandan flavours and I went and got one of each on my way to the train station. The shop is located inside Market Hall. The cakes are sweet and tasty and I quite liked them. I thought the pandan one would have been nicer with a bigger pandan kick. I only got slices of each but you are able to get larger cakes as well. Quite an interesting and tasty snack.

(02/08/20) Review of my original review! 10 months ago I posted a review of my honey cake experience and gave it 3 stars-- I was pretty disappointed. But when honey cake is made right, it is delicious. I decided to try my luck again. The honey cake was perfect, not dry, not stodgy, the creamy layer was generous. The flavour was more honey without the sickly sweet sugary taste. I regret not buying an extra cake to bring home! The service was fine. The honey cake I bought is not the same as the honey cake from years ago. The cake was dry and overly sweet (my partner would described it as "stodgy"-- what happened to the light creamy honey layers? The service was fine but I felt that the server either didn't want to be there, or didn't want to serve me. She made me feel uncomfortable when I made my purchase.

Really bad experience!!!! They have a campaign on wechat with MostWA. The top three winner gets a free honey cake (the small size is only worth $29 tho). After a week of winning the prize, no one contacted me and when I go to this Yagan Square store, the girl refused to give me the cake saying she doesn’t know about the campaign, the boss is not picking up the phone, she’s not with the marketing team and the marketing manager is on Ester holiday etc. if you don’t want to giveaway free prize only worth $29. Stop posting ads. It took me 40 mins to go there , totally waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Didn't feel anything when I tried the honey cake for the first time in Fremantle. But recently got one of those premium sizes for my family in this store, and it tasted heavenly good. Good service and beautiful container & bag tho :)

I love the cake! $32 for the largest one (not very big though) but worth the money! Everyone should taste the Honey cake and ice cream!

Cake is so delicious but the storeperson makes you feel so unwelcome. They made eye contact with me but proceeded to use their phone for another minute before serving me. Disappointing experience.

This is the second time I bought the honeycake. Been hearing a lot of hype regarding the pandan flavor honey cake and was excited to try it out. We went to the city store but there were sold out already but fortunately manage to get them from the Yagan square.
The original flavor taste a bit average so didn't get it this time. We bought the cacao flavor and the pandan flavor. I like the cacao one, nice texture as the original one. However, I was a bit disappointed with the pandan flavor honey cake. The coconut flavor was far too strong and completely overpowering the lovely pandan taste that I'm after. Price was quite steep as it is around $6 for a small piece of cake. There are a bit too sweet for my liking but overall still a nice treat.

Yummmmmm if you haven't had honey cake before do yourself a favour and get here asap! So soft and sweet and good 😍😍
Even freezes!
Cute little store and friendly service.

Pandan honey cake is very nice. Always sold out. Maybe they should make more so it has enough supply for customer to buy. I have been to a few times and not able to get that at Yagan Square.

This cake, unique to Perth, consists of layers of what tastes like gingerbread sponge and caramel buttercream topped with finely crushed walnuts. And of course, the honey taste is definitely there. It’s nice but a tad sweet and doesn’t come cheap.

The cakes truly taste different to other bakeries around Perth and the honey does give it a unique flavour. I love all things honey so I am a fan. Perhaps a bit pricey in my opinion

These cakes are bloody good! I'm not really a big honey eater or even a cake eater but boy these are executed well. A modernised take on the more biscuitty eastern European dessert that a few countries claim as their own, these guys have made a softer version with their top notch caramel honey. Service is always polite and helpful and the taste is excellent - they now have a great range of biscuits, cheesecakes and even a chocolate version. The prices are a touch high for the quantity/serving size but the quality is great!

My boyfriend's birthday was a few days ago and it could only mean 1 thing: we ate a lot to celebrate. His birthday "cake" was none other than 4 different types of honeycake 🍯🎂! Talk about being spoilt. The Honeycake is WA's first cakery that specialises in Czech layered honeycake. All layers are hand-made from scratch from real and local ingredients!

The delicious traditional cake is a unique combination of altering honey-flavoured layers with smooth and creamy caramel, topped with fresh ground walnuts and honey crumbs 🍯. The cacao version is less sweet with the addition of *drum rolls* cacao powder, perfect for chocolate lovers (and ze birthday boi surprisingly loves this the most) 🍫! Honeymelt is the lighter version of the traditional cake with layers of soft biscuits and fluffy caramel cream. The walnuts on top are honey-roasted which pretty much guarantee scrumptiousness in each bite 🍪. Last but not least the honey cheesecake is my absolute favourite because you get them divine honeycake pieces covered in tangy lemon cream throughout 🍰. Best of both worlds!

If you're looking for something more special than an ordinary cake, honeycakes will be sure to impress! Apparently they can last up to 10 days in the fridge but seriously pfft, who in the right mind takes 10 days to eat cakes?!?

I always enjoy a slice of their original honey cake. They also have a cocoa one but nothing beats the original. Friendly staff at their CBD store! I've also had their pash pop which is also nice. Their cheesecake & puffs are my standouts- I only wished they weren't limited time!!

Always serving delicious honey cakes! Family from overseas are requesting this whenever I go back to visit! Friendly staff! I also love the cacao honey cake!

Having had honeycake from freo markets previously, I decided to try their vanilla gelato pop which was ok, however I would have preferred room temp cake+ gelato on the side if I'm going to be completely honest- cold cake isn't my jam. Sampled the new cacao honey cake, good but took a slice of the original to go, delicious as always.

4.6 rating

Definitely yummy slice of heaven.
Very hard to replicate. A must have when in Perth - it is even better than the traditional honey cakes.

Certainly a good gift too as it lasts for up to a week.

Was asked by friends interstate to buy a slab of honeycake and bring it back for them. Surprised I hadn't come across this place before! I special ordered the cake for pickup on Tuesday, and went past on Monday and it was there already! Very friendly staff, and the honeycake... Oh where do I begin! I'm not usually one to really like honey heavy things, but the cake was absolutely delicious!

Best cake in Perth! I can eat it for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert. It's so good that they finally have a presence in the city so I won't have to make a trip to Freo whenever I have cravings for it.
They have a winter special now! Honey Cheesecake! It's as amazing as Honeycake. Service is great in the city too. Very friendly.

This honey cake is absolutely stunning. Super fresh, beautifully flavoured and layered .... It's hard to beat as an accompaniment to black coffee.
Then there's the location, in the basement of the restored and renovated Treasury building. ... Heaven.

I finally got to try the honeycake in the new store downstairs in the State Building; have never tried it in Fremantle. I do love this space, and has now become one of my favourite destinations to cure my sugar cravings. The lady behind the counter was friendly and informed me that it was all made locally in Fremantle. It was amazing flavour so I decide to go with two slices, for later, although you can have it there as there are tables inside and outside to have with a coffee from the café next door.

I really did enjoy the take-away slice. Nice caramel flavours and I to me it was reminiscent of a caramel slice but with a more earthy feel. You could taste the honey, and while it is sweet, it wasn’t overly so. I could image in summer this would pair well with vanilla ice-cream. Delicious and definitely will be back.
