Went for a drive to the Port on Sunday unexpectedly and arrived around 2.30, hungry for lunch. The Commercial was the first pub we walked past so called in and asked if they were still serving. Very enthusiastic staff welcomed us in. Ordered an entree S&P Calamari and the a chicken Burger. Food promptly arrived and I have to say for an averaged size eater the entree size calamari as a main was more than sufficient, beautifully presented and tasted every bit as good as it looked. I would say the burger was definitely in the top two burgers I have ever had and extremely reasonably priced! Would not hesitate in recommending the food, based on taste, presentation, quality and price and most enjoyable sitting outside on a sunny winters day enjoying the view over the markets and wharves!! 5⭐️!!!

WOW best pub meal in the Port. Great music and service.
Great hearty meals that were excellent value for money. The Pie Special reminded me of the pies 20yrs ago, fantastic pastry and a mouthwatering filling. The Chicken schnitzel with jäger sauce is the best I have had in ages.
We will definitely be back again.

Time  to update everyone on this  pub....note the negative reviews are mostly from 2015. They put me off at first, but i did attend a quiz night there recently (May 2017)and couldn't really fault them.
2 brothers now own this pub (since 2016) and have created a great little pub. The bistro area serves lovely meals and has friendly staff. Upstairs is a function room which is pretty well self contained (toilets and bar), and leads out to an all weather balcony. The First Commercial is really worth a visit if you are looking for good pub food, a place to relax and have a drink or two.

Great food in lounge bar - but avoid the front bar or eating outside at night. As a friend was staying in Port Adelaide, we decided we would give this place a go first.
The lunch we were served was quickly prepared, a large fresh salad along with our mains, in my case a generous and better tasting schnitter than I am used to and my friend's seafood basket was delightful.
We came back for lunch next day and I did a steak that was perfectly cooked, whilst my friend stuck with the seafood (sorry). Again, the salads with the meals were top class, the service was friendly, and it was a relaxing, comfortable seating in the lounge with a great view of the Port.
After having a few too many frothies that day, we couldn't be bothered moving so had dinner too!
This time I had the Mixed Grill which was awesome and tasty and my friend had...a chicken parmi which he loved. The prices are good so food and drink wise - very good value.
Now to what we didn't like. At one stage the barman disappeared so I tried to find him. I stumbled into the front bar which resembled something from a Mad Max movie. Everyone looked at me as if I was a Martian. The next day my mate went into the front bar and was propped by a prostitute and was called a "poof" by one of the locals for no apparent reason (my mate was dressed in jeans and a monocolour t-shirt so can't work that one out). Later that day there was a fight in the front bar which spilled onto the street (we didn't see it, just heard it). Later on we were accosted by two of the locals as we sat outside eating dinner. Both had been kicked out for being drunk so one of them decided to challenge me to a fight for no reason. I ignored him but he was determined. I went inside and the waitress tried to calm him down. His mate urinated on the hotel whilst cursing. The manager came and threatened to call the police if they didn't piss off. They didn't, the curser eventually throwing up near my mate. At no time did the manager apologise or offer us any assistance - she swore as much as the patrons! The poor waitress was great, apologised and suggested we'd be safer indoors. By this stage the two clowns had jumped in a car (I can't believe they could drive) and went. The police were never called to my knowledge.
So, there you have it. If you like great value pub food with real Aussie atmosphere, this is the place for you!
DISCLAIMER: I work in the hospitality industry for a hotel that could be seen as a competitor to this one for patronage.

Was not sure where to go tonight and had checked out some hotels nearby and this place didn't look to busy so thought I would give it a try. This place had really good service by Hannah. We started with natural and Kilpatrick oysters followed by scallops Florentine (sorry forgot the photos of these dishes) We followed up with roast lamb and a 300gram porterhouse. The meals here are huge and not expensive. I will definitely be going there again and have no hesitation in recommending it

The steak sandwiches were great with huge serves. The service is very friendly. There are lots of outdoor tables available, which are great to sit at in the nice weather. My only criticism is the fact that the staff weren't wearing masks at all, which for a place that serves food and drink so customers can't wear masks, is not good.
