I can sometimes be scared off by food courts, but the one at Pran Central is really clean, has heaps of comfortable seating, and even phone charge stations... it's virtually inviting you to stop for a while. The aromas coming from O-Bun enticed me in, and I was delighted to be able to buy lunch for under $10!

There is quite a good range if bao and buns to choose from, and I went with the Hog and Kimchi. The hog had a generous piece of crispy pork belly doused in the most heavenly sweet and sticky sauce. Lots of crispy veg cut through the richness of the pork, and the buns were so soft and fluffy.

The kimchi included bulogi beef with the aforementioned kimchi, and this one was really spicy. Absolutely delicious with a really good chilli hit. The only downside to this one was that it was a bit more difficult to eat and quite messy, but we were given complementary wet wipes so it wasn't really that much of an issue. Again, it had a perfectly soft bun, and it was extremely tasty.

The staff were so nice, and service took about ten minutes which is understandable when everything is made fresh. I love that it was also served in a biodegradable box, so that gets a thumbs up from me. O-Bun is a great option for lunch on the run, particularly if you love bao and a bit of spice.

Used to go here when I worked in Prahran and it’s still one my favourites go-tos for baos and buns. I’ve always had their bun fries and baos, because their my favourite but this time we had broken rice with fried chicken and tried their dessert buns - everything was super delicious and lived up to the standard I’m used. Bonus, found out their on ubereats so I can get it delivered to me.

There are times in life when you want to sit down, order a bottle of wine and enjoy a good meal with friends. Then there are times when you just want something quick that won’t take up half your day. But with so much fast food out there, that tastes the same what can you really get anymore.

And what do really want – tasty, quick and doesn’t break the bank… welcome to O-Bun, serving up delicious bao treats. Don’t worry we know what you’re thinking – what the hell is bao? To put it simply, it’s a dumpling like bun that you stuff with delicious fillings. You can really put whatever you want inside to make it just the way you like.

Located in Pran Central Shopping Centre don’t be deterred by O-Bun being in a food court. They are giving a fresh take on fast food that is fun and tasty.

So, what is O-Bun serving up, first off, they got bao and a bunch of different flavours featuring fried chicken, tofu and char-siu just to name a few. But it doesn’t stop there, O-Bun serves up a range of sides that will go with your any of your tasty treats.

We decided to sample a few of the house favourites soft-shell crab, kimchi, char-siu, pork belly and fried chicken – you know because we just wanted something small. These bad boys are easy to eat, you can pick it up in one hand and just go to town. They even got #baopalm to see how many you can hold in one hand – the current record is five. Give it a try and see how many can do. Best bit is you can eat them afterwards.

Loving the fried chicken and char-siu baos they were only topped by the soft-shell crab which was crunchy, spicy and soft all at the same time.

On our way out, we stumbled upon the proverbial cherry on top – the sweet bao, deep fried with a scoop of Ben & Jerries ice cream (be warned the ice cream is seasonal so they will always have a different flavour on hand). We were lucky enough to have ours with The Tonight Dough. And a word of advice, grab a few extra napkins because this one can get messy if you don’t eat it quick enough!

No matter the day if you find yourself in the Prahran area its definitely worth taking a walk over to O-Bun. The only problem you’re going to have, is knowing when to stop because bao are like Pringles – once you pop, you can’t stop. They are addictive!

We love our baos, that's why we were so thrilled to try out O-Bun and all the buns they had to offer!

- Ambience -
Located inside Prahran shopping centres food court, super easy to locate and convenient to get to! Laidback Sunday vibes all round :)

- Food -
We had a bit of everything on the menu which was great as we got the chance to get a taste of all their favourite buns! The buns were small in size but filled us up so we ain't complaining.
We had:
- Hen's Bun (fried chicken)
- Kimchi Bun (Bulgogi Beef)
- Char-siu Bun (Roast BBQ pork)
- Hog Bun (Slow cooked pork belly)
- Creeper Bun (Soft shell crab)
- F-O-F Bun (Fish fillet)

Our favourite would definitely be the 'Hog Bun' which was the slow cooked pork belly with cucumber, pickled carrots, daikon crushed peanuts with a finish of hoisin sauce. This one was soooo JUICYYY and delicious! Every bite was heavenly!

Another favourite would be the 'Creeper Bun' which was the soft shell crab... seriously you can never go wrong with soft shell crab! They were so crunchy and filled with the right amount of sauce exactly how we like it!

Overall their cute little buns are very soft and fluffy, filled with a variety of fillings and toppings to satisfy any craving you might have! If you're in the area and down for a munch, you should definitely check this bao spot out for yourselves!

- Service -
The guy that served us was very informative with the buns and gave us a quick background on the story behind the store . He gave us his favourite recommendations and even helped us plate them up for the food pics !! So thank you for having us! Super friendly and welcoming staff!

😱Lizzie’s first impression: Would have never ran into this place had I not known about it before hand - it is situated within Prahan Central on the busy Chapel st. It was surprisingly opened on a Sunday despite most of the stores being closed. I was so impressed by all the different option of baos there were.

🍩Lizzie enjoyed: I tried alot of the buns including the char siu bao, creeper bun which was soft shell crab, F-O-F bao which was a deep fried fish fillet, the Hen's bun (chicken), and also the Kimchi Bun.

All of the flavours were really well thought out and put together. I was very impressed at how fast the service was - the meats were all fresh and hot. My favourite would have been the soft shell crab - it had good siracha mayo flavours and was delicious with the slaw. I also enjoyed the fish fillet as it was fried fresh and tasted delicious. I loved all the sauces and it complemented each of the baos.
The fried chicken was also juicy, tender and fried really well.
The char siu bao had lots of flavour and was very soft. The kimchi bun was a bulgolgi beef and was marinated really well.

🍅Lizzie did not enjoy: Really wished they had a store in the city as I really think the bao ideas are great and delicious - just too bad I'm not in this area often.  This place is also apart of the wider food court - would be good if they had a full store with their exclusive seating.

🥇Lizzie rates overall: a great feed over lunch during lunch hours or on the weekends. I loved trying all of them and you really can't go wrong since they have pretty much have every poultry or vegetable option.

I've actually never walked into Prahran Central ever.. to be honest i didn't even know it was there 🤔 little did i know there was a ripper of a BUN shop right in the middle! 😎 lets just say i won't be walking past prahran central as easy as i used anymore, knowing what's inside waiting 😅 myself and the ever bubbly, ever punny @melbournefoodgoals went down to check out how these guys go! 😉 Boy am i glad we did! 😍
.
☑ 8.5/10! Brilliantly BAO-tiful! 🙌🏽

🔥 HIT - right off the bat we dug straight into the Ben and Jerry's sweet Bun! 🍦 im a big fan! Its actually nothinh like i expected! The bun is deep fried and coated in a thin sugar glaze then filled with none other than B&J goodness! 🤤 it pretty much tastes like a glazed doughnut filled with ice cream 😉 if thats not a winner, i don't know what is! 🤔 second up, was the Hens Bun 🐓 i really enjoyed this! Crunchy fried chicken that was moist on the inside, covered in a chipotle style mayo and served with pickled veggies 🥕 great combo of flavours and textures for a delicious bun! 👌🏽 next up was the char-siu pork! Nice soft pork pieces cooked in a delicious char-siu sauce 🙌🏽 one of the biggest HITS for me was the texture and consistensy of the BUN itself! 😍 soft, fluffy and delicious! 😁
.
💨 MISS - there honestly wasn't a lot to dislike about o-bun! If i had to nit pick, it would come down to the texture of the pork belly. It was a little tough and hard to bite through to enjoy the bun! HOWEVER, please note that this was after photos. The buns cooled down a little and easily could have impacted the texture. Next time im downing it straight away 😉😋
.
💡 TIP - definitely getting around the CREEPER 🦀 and the BUN FRIES 🍟 next time round 😉 give them a go and tell me what you think! 🙌🏽

Nestled in amongst the multitude of restaurants and shops of Pran Central is this bao heaven! With a huge range of seafood, meat and vegan choices, there's an option for everyone!
I saw up close how carefully and perfectly the bao buns are steamed, by the passionate and friendly Ivan. Ivan is more than happy to help recommend which flavours to try while talking you through the menu!
The Kimchi Bun packs a gut-loving punch, if you're looking for spice! The Creeper Bun had a subtle but tasty seafood flavour and was cooked to perfection. The Char Sui & F-O-F Buns were both delicious and well seasoned. But my all time top FAVES were the succulent Hog Bun and the juicy Hen's Bun. The pork in the Hog Bun was absolutely melt in mouth and so flavoursome! The Hen's Bun had a beautifully crispy coating with tender meat inside, complimented perfectly by the pickled carrots.
If you've still got room for more then make SURE to get the sweet option of Ben & Jerry's ice-cream inside a warm crispy fried bao!
