Review Tsukiji - Prahran

Simon Natal
Top place for sashimi/sushi. Many options and fresh. We ordered unadon (generous portion) and sashimi. The sashimi shelves have many selections (see photos). However these are a bit pricey (especially compared to seafood stalls at Prahran Market nearby). Free extra wasabi, but $1 for ginger.

I have visited this market/restaurant more than once and I am always amazed and satisfied! It is also such a unique experience! You choose your favourite fish in the desired weight, cashier will ring you up at the counter. They will slice your sashimi in the back and bring it out to you. It is always so beautiful. Bento boxes are so good and well priced! Try the Gyudon, it is amazing. Tempura udon is simple and tasty. Tuna toro was amazing!

If you don’t think this is best sushi in town you are a #*€>~|z. Honestly this place is amazing. You pick the sushi yourself they put it together and it’s awesome. Its non pretentious, good and I feel bad giving it such a glowing review as it may let the word out on my local but google has won so might as well turn into it. Highly highly recommended

Tried one of biggest sashimi plate to see how good with various ones. I don't recommend. It wasn't fresh or didn't have good sashimi texture. Also, hygiene of toilet was so bad. I lost my appetite after coming back from toilet as I saw too much things there. Sashimi plate was $130. I could've gone other nice restaurants around there with same amount.

I LOVE the concept of this place. Buy your own pack of fish and they will cut and serve it to you. They offer menu items too. Tried their curry rice and tempura udon and it was yummy
Charlotte Zhou
Had udon in store and sashimi takeaway. Udon was nice and warm, sashimi was well cut decorated and packed. They would put ice in the bag to keep sashimi fresh. Scollop was so sweet and fresh

3.5 stars. We were looking forward to coming here so much but a bit let down. My partner and I from Japan guess that this shop is probably Korean owned/not Japanese. The flavor is not authentic and a big reason for that is the rice for the sushi was very gluggy/gluey with no flavour. (sushi rice usually has a light vinegar taste that compliments the fish-we had nothing). Rice should absolutely not be underestimated when it comes to sushi and it was very poor quality. You wouldn’t eat a soggy sandwich would you? That’s why this place is not Japanese. The tempura also had a bit of a strange texture and was not proper. We like that there was a little supermarket style fish shop and the shop was nicely decorated with photos of Japan. The menu looked wonderful and variety of food was fantastic- just a pretty looking menu though. Does not reflect the food itself well. Ordinary Melbourne nisemono food. We won’t be back.

This is one restaurant I am excited to leave a 5 star review for - it's definitely one of my favourite Japanese experiences in Melbourne. Great food, melt in your mouth sashimi, a good range of sake and great service! Whether you dine in or take away and eat at home during the lockdown, I totally recommend it and can't wait to go back again.

Ordered their Sushi Bento Box, the sushi rice was soggy and no flavor, sashimi was not fresh, chicken karaage was not karaage (it was frozen nuggets). Disappointed.

It used to be really good when it was owned by the old Japanese lovely couple and i went here for years every month. However with the new management, the sashimi is not fresh at all and I witnessed they were prepacked the night before with today’s sticker. The quality is going downhill after I’ve been here a several times under new management. They now charge $130 per kg for like a normal piece of tuna (A) or $105 for kingfish and it wasn’t that expensive under old management. If it’s fresh and no bones in inside (there’s a few times they keep having constant fish bones), it may still worth the price. I’d rather go somewhere else for the price they are charging now. It’s truly disappointing and heartbreaking to see that the old lovely couple has made a lot of effort in the past to maintain the quality

Got takeaway from Tsukiji to eat in a nearby park - love that you can select the size of sashimi you want and they will slice it up all for you (that goodness because we forgot our knife) ready to go with a bag of ice to keep it cool.

Service was SUPER friendly, wait was a little long due to coming in right on lunch time.

Food was good, the nigiri was decent but definitely go for the unagi - definitely the best one.

Been here twice, I like the vibe of the place as it's really chill. The staffs were nice though it does take a while for them to cut the fishes.

The seafood that I've had were all pretty fresh, my favorites being the salmon and salmon belly, and the boiled octopus. Wasabi and soy sauce are complimentary. Rice though was disappointing as they were mushy on both visits, not the short grain chewy sushi rice.

My friend thought the cuts weren't as good as the previous owners' but since I never tried I couldn't really compare.

Overall though being the only place I know specialising in sashimi at an affordable price, it's a great place to go when craving for sashimi.

( follow for more!🌸)

xx,joelle.

Interesting concept of being able to pick out your own sashimi with the prices displayed. Fish was very good quality and very fresh

Sashimi selection of your choice!

This small cosy Japanese restaurant is run by an old Japanese couple, which provides you with both fresh and quality sashimi at a reasonable price. The range of seafood available is satisfactory, customer service met up to expectations, and you can choose the amount of different sashimi you want.
However, during peak hours, the service may be a bit slow as this restaurant is run by only 2 people, so please be patient!

⭐️ 5/5 (for a very affordable sashimi fix)
💸 AUD 44

Follow my Instagram for food reviews in Melbourne, Bangkok, Houston, Japan, etc!!
@keenchubbyeats

Awesome small restaurant with fresh sashimi you can choose your own cuts from the fridge. Each is individually priced which is handy. It's true as per other reviews, service is slow but for the price you're paying (cheap!!) it's worth the wait.
Kingfish is my favourite, but I seem to always also get the Hapuka and scallops. Highly recommended

Haven’t visited for at least a year now. Went for the first time on a Saturday recently. The sashimi choices are still as good and fresh. There are more seats now as the grocery section is gone and the food is served faster than before as well. Couldn’t see the original owners so I wonder if changed hands. The hot food menu has a lot more choices too compared to before or maybe it was because it was Saturday.

Overall the Kamameshi meal (one not full bowl of rice with miso soup and seaweed salad) we had was small but really delicious and authentic. The sashimi is just as good as I remembered it so it was a good meal.

Highly recommended place if you are after some good grade own choice sashimi!
Angela Fan
Beautiful small store with fresh sashimi that you can pick from a fridge. Very reasonably priced for the quality. The hot food was not great but it does not take away from how amazing the sashimi was. Highly recommend the scallops!
Christina Xu
My favourite place for SASHIMI. Absolutely fresh and the price is very reasonable. Make sure you arrive early (I mean just wait outside before they open) to get the sashimi you want.
Maddie Southall
Absolutely amazing little restaurant just off the bustle of chapel. Food is incredible, staff are lovely and the ambience feels authentic and homely.
Think I have just found my new local fave!
If you come here you have to try the pork belly, it’s amazing! Will definitely be returning!
Thomas Norton
Delicious pork belly and sashimi, seems to be run by an old Japanese couple, place has a lovely family run feel.

New favourite in Prahran, will definitely return!
Stella.wangyt
Food here is fabulous but you just need to be extra patient cuz it’s super busy and only two ppl running around. Really worth a try and you will definitely come back for fresh sashimi!
Sammy
Used to be my go to sashimi joint. Unfortunately the quality has gone down hill. Sashimi somewhat isn’t as good and fresh as it used to be. Service is painfully slow also.
Rodney English
Very disappointed with our fish today ,yes it was nice and fresh but the way it sliced was dreadful we have been good customers for the past 15 years or more and this is the last time he just does not care and has a bad attitude towards the customer thank you for the good food over the years sorry it has to end this way.
Niki Li
The sashimi are so fresh and yummy! We came very early, so it had plenty fishes we can choose! And we are surprise that this whole plate is under $100! It was my first time to getting full only by having sashimi!Highly recommended!
Annii
Have been wanting to come here for literally years and finally found the time to go during their (limited!) opening hours, and it was definitely worth the wait. Fresh sashimi at a decent price, great gyoza and okonomiyaki that brings me back to Japan!

The only super mild downside is the service time - the restaurant is run by an elderly couple, who do everything from the register to waiting tables to the actual cooking!

We were lucky enough to snag the last table, but try and come early as some diners waited a good twenty-thirty minutes before getting a coveted seat.
Kathy Chen
I am so happy i found this place! probably the best discovery ever. The sashimi was extremely fresh and cheap. The fish was cut beautifully and bite-sized. i will defiantly come back for my future sushi cravings.

After some mad cravings for sashimi and a few nights of searching a place that had both decent prices and a good selection of white flesh fish, we decided to give Tsukiji a try.

I read some reviews saying the place can get quite busy and your selection of fish may be limited be you go too late in the day so we made sure we got there early.

Note that we went on Monday for lunch as the store has limited opening hours, for example they are open for lunch but closed for dinner on Mondays.

We arrived a little passed 12pm which is when they open. When we arrived, there was one lady already there who seemed like a regular customer and the owners were friendly with her but unfortunately we did not receive the same greeting (no greeting to be exact). We felt a little uncomfortable being there as it was very quite and the owners didnt acknowledge us when we entered and when we were looking at they produce (felt like we werent meant to be in there tbh..)

On the plus side, they have a great selection of fish that are cut to sizes so that most fish do not exceed the $8 mark (average of $5 per pack). This was great as we could pick a varitey of fish to try. It was means that you can work within your own budgets and decide what you want for what you want to spend. They also have tubs of seaweed salad, takowasabi and octopus salad to go with your sashimi and some hot and cold menu items to choose from as well.

The owners are out the back most of the time unless someone has called for their service or bring out food so do not hesitate to use the bell if you need help.

We took our fish to the counter and ordered a udon to go with it. We asked for eat in and so the lady took the fish out the back to get sliced up.

I was so impressed with the slicing of the fish and each fish was sliced to a particular thickness to enjoy the fullness of the flavour. All the fish was so fresh and tasty. My partner's favourite was the king fish that was cut thick and although we often get king fish when eating out at sushi trains, this king fish tasted so much better thanks to the thicker slicing.
I personally loved the snapper due to its texture. I actually like that it has more bite to the flesh.
We also got a takowasabi which was also quite good.

The udon was very basic in flavour and came with one tempura prawn. This was okay because it was what we had anticipated when we ordered it and we got it was more of a palate cleaner.

Although the service was a little cold, we felt that the quality of the fish made up for this. Also as the owner's were more advanced in their years, it was more understandable (at least they were nice and friendly to eachother).
We will definately be back whether it be to eat in again or get some to take away for a platter to share with dinner guests.
Sarah
Great sashimi and food. Try the Udon! But be warned, space is small, and wait is longer than normal during eating peak hours. If you want to eat here, expect that. Expect that u have to wait for a table, expect that u have to queue, run a risk of having food when u haven't got a table if you want to queue before u get a table. Don't throw a tantrum and get angry! (yea someone did when I was there yesterday and swore and scolded the old lady, like hello? It's expected)
Beverly
Love the selection of fresh sashimi and authentic home cooked Japanese comfort food. Really cute and friendly Japanese couple who runs the place makes you feel welcomed. Always my go to place.
Lunarcry
Very fresh sashimi. You get to pick your choices of sashimi, take them to the counter and the sushi chef slices them for you. Goes well with just rice and miso soup.
Marina Ung
Unfortunately it doesn’t tell us the updated opening hours so we drove an hour here from home to find out that it was closed on the only day we had off.. disappointed but will give them another chance.
Helen
So fresh!!! Best quality sashimi in town...we also ordered udon, takoyaki, gyoza and Yaki meshi, all tasted good and the prices are very reasonable! Will come back often and recommend to friends!!

My favourite place to get my sashimi and unagi fix. Cheap and fresh seafood served by a very lovely couple. Service can get a bit slow after several customers have entered the shop (understandable given that it is only the two of them) so my partner and I would always make sure to be there once or even before the shop opens.
Ignatia
Fresh sashimi, period. Will not settle for sashimi with less quality than the ones here. So how do you order here is to grab the sashimi you want from the fridge, then bring them to the cashier. Pay there and have a seat. They’ll cut your chosen fish into proper sashimi and bring them to your table. Wasabi is already provided, you don’t need to buy the one at the counter as it’s only for takeaway sashimi — or if you really like wasabi that you need more 😜 Oh, and I think there were only two people who ran the restaurant; one at the front and one behind the kitchen. The owner herself serves customers in the cashier and brings the food to the table. I waited for quite some time, but I understand. When I have eaten though, it’s heavenly 😋

This one deserves a solid 5/5.
Food (sashimi):
- King fish: naturally had a stronger flavour than salmon but was so fresh that the flavour was a lot milder than usual.
- Salmon: rich, fatty, creamy, melt-in-your-mouth salmon. Again, it tasted a lot fresher and the fishiness was pretty much zero.
- Octopus: I was wowed by this one. The texture was crunchy without being rubbery. This ultimately changed my perception of octopus because I've always thought that they're very chewy and unpleasant but this was so good.
- Surf clam: naturally sweet, not fishy at all. This one was not as rich as the 2 fish so it's refreshing to have in your sashimi plate.

Price: I think it's rather cheap for the quality food that you get especially when there're so many cut you can choose from so you can easily get your money worth.

Service: some reviews have complained about the old couple running this place but my experience with them was good. They were nice and friendly. A little slow at the counter but I didn't have a problem with that.

Ambience: the shop is a lot smaller than I thought and doesn't have a lot of seats but we managed to get a table so it was ok. The deco is a little old but all the photos and paintings on the wall made it very homely and cosy.

I had such high hopes for Tsukiji. I walked in, and no one greeted me, the place was packed. After 10 minutes, I went to the counter, waited another 5 until the man looked at me but didn't say anything. I asked him for a table for 3, and he looked at me going 'Not my problem, one here, one here, one here' (pointing at the random seats, one of which was on a table of 4, seating a family of 3). How can I share a meal with my friends when we're not seated together. I expected some answer like 'Wait for next table' or take down my name.

Don't go when it's packed if you want to avoid horrible service. I walked right out cause I wasn't going to pay for being treated like that and also although packed, people sitting down were waiting for food, since it's only himself and his wife (85+ years old) that were working.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

A beautiful cosy Japanese restaurant run by an elderly couple. BEST SASHIMI in melbourne!!! Really fresh with a lot of varieties to choose from, with the option of getting your sashimi sliced and having in store or takeaway. Definitely recommend arriving early as the place gets really busy. Due to being run by an elderly couple, service can be quite slow, however, totally worth the wait!

Extremely good value with the quality that you’re getting. My partner and I had salmon, tuna, hapuka, broad bill, octopus, king fish, king dory, gurnard. They also have a selection of hot foods.
After some exceptionally fresh sashimi I had recently at another establishment, my hankering for more brought me to Tsukiji.

There are some hot food offerings on the menu and a small selection of Japanese groceries that can be purchased, but I was on a sashimi mission.

Straight away, I made a beeline for the fridge section where a variety of fresh seafood is displayed, and in no time I made my selection of: Hapuka, Atlantic Salmon, Octopus, Sea Urchin and Prepared Cod Roe.

Upon paying at the counter, an option of dine in or takeaway was given, where I chose the latter and happily paid the extra 50c to have my fish and octopus sliced.

Once I had the chance to settle down and tuck into my takeaway, I was immediately impressed with the quality and freshness of my sashimi. It was absolutely gorgeous! Add to that, the contrasting natural sweetness of the sea urchin against the saltiness of the cod roe made it all the more enjoyable. Coupled with a hot cup of miso soup, I was on the verge of a food coma!

Service here was rather slow though, and even more so, as more customers started arriving. After all, it is run by an elderly Japanese couple who minds both the front of house and back themselves.

Having said that, I didn’t really mind the wait as the food made it all worthwhile. Mission accomplished.
HildaLuv2Eat
Would recommend to come earlier for a wider selection of sashimi, I was there for Sat dinner around 7pm but there were not much fresh fish remaining in the fridge already. But I really like the ideal of customer getting to choose their own choices and quality of fishes and seafood! Operated by the Japanese old couple, it is a petite cozy place which also serve homely dishes like cooked miso mackerel and okonomiyako, plus the price overall is much cheaper than other Japanese restaurant. will be there again soon cos I wanna try their scallop and toro so badly...
Jonathan Lim
Absolutely amazing cuts of fish at reasonable prices. Customer service could be a little better. Came in at 1115 on a Saturday and was told they would only be able to slice my cuts at 12 as they were busy setting up. It’s not a big deal but was pretty annoyed as the lady before me had hers cut just previously.
Linda
Small little grocery / Japanese restaurant specialising in sashimi and small snacks. Always has the freshest sashimi - you buy the slices of fish and they cut it up for you.
One of the best sashimi in town minus all the theatrics!
Alan Tse
Hands down best sashimi in Melbourne... if you manage to get there when it’s open. Have been a few times. They have a fridge full of fish, you choose your fish and they slice it for you on the spot, there could be a wait if you’re slow and the owners (husband and wife) do all the serving and cutting. I arrived at noon, chose quickly and was the first to the counter. At 12:05 there must have been 15 people behind me.... most people take away, but you could eat in. Reading some of the other reviews there’s no point eating anything other than sashimi and If I was coming here I wouldn’t either. It’s extremely good value with a few options that I haven’t seen at other places... off the top of my head that you could get - tuna a and b, salmon, trout, kingfish, Hapuka, gurnard, scallops, surf clam, oysters, sea urchin roe... if you get there early enough you could even get the off cuts for cooking or whatever! Immaculately presented (though not as much packaging as Hinoki).

They also have a small range of Japanese groceries if you needed something to go with the fish when you get home... nowhere near as much as the nearby Tokyo Mart but handy to complete the meal.

Food:5/5
service:you need to wait the lady finish her hand job then service fro you. She is nice to everyone who just be serviced, but wouldn’t care the other things. I cannot say is a best service, but i can understand this. If you wish some one will service you at table, don’t be silly in this place.
environment: too old but perfect fit for the old couple owner.

I must say this restaurant have the best Sashimi and price is like fish market. All the seafood is fresh and tasty. It is perfect to have one hot rice and miso soup with the Sashimi plate. And that enough, the old couple only want simple service and provide simple food. that’s it. I would like to give 5 stars. for they professional on the fish(Sashimi).
Chubzzy
I really like this place for its sashimi since it’s fresh, but I really cannot stand the service. You got to wait for so long at the counter just to get some service! The old couple working there are friendly, but aren’t apologetic about the wait. I literally had to wait 20mins at the counter, no service at all. The old lady manningthe counter helps her husband out inside, but she should also look at the queue! Perhaps hiring one more person to help out could make things better??
Then it’s another 20mins wait to get my very few pieces of fish sliced into sashimi. Asked how long the wait was when I paid the old guy (yep the old man is manning the counter this time) he said maybe 20mins and he said “i try. Look at this!” *points to the long queue behind me*
Like that isn’t my fault??? 😕
As much as i like this place i just cannot come back too often because of the long wait. And it looks like they are not game to change their strategy because this is not the first time they make people wait. Really annoying.
Shuun
Been here many times over the past 3 years. It's been a place where I've brought my friends for lunch too.
Fresh, delicious, wide selection range, and cost effective.
Although the old lady could be rude at times, we ought to be understanding that it isn't running a restaurant with limited staff and with age catching up to her. After all, the food and price are most important. To me, that matters most.
Cindett3058
Delicious delicious!! Yum and fresh sashimi although service can be a bit slow there’s only a loving elderly couple working there. Providing authentic, traditional Japanese food with care! The sashimi is super fresh and cheap! Don’t come here with super big groups because the place is very small, it also has a small grocery in the middle of restaurant. I love the concept of “chose your own fish” and “we will cut it for you” as it is super convenient and helps to control over ordering.

xx bts xx
Foodie
Delicious and fresh fish, losing points on service as it was pretty much self service. Would be good if they instructed you. You pretty much go to the fridge where all the freshly cut seafood is, bring it to the counter and they will prepare and serve to you. Was yelled at several times for wanting more wasabi and chopsticks, as they had given us 2 for 4 people. We also tried the food on the menu, udon was nice but the salmon fried rice and pork belly was a definite let down.
MeganEatsEverything
Fresh sashimi, reasonable prices, what more could I ask for? The shop is quite the unique one I'd say, it's somewhat small but they may good use of their space and it did not feel tiny or crowded at all even when it gets packed during lunch hours. Their Atlantic salmon is better than the ocean trout at times and their white fish depends on what they sell on certain days (correct me if I'm wrong). The only drawback is the slow service but what can I complain about when there's only an old couple working together to make us happy right?
Sabby
Slightly unimpressed by the service to say the least; they didn't offer sushi, which was falsely advertised on their online menu, and told us to go eat somewhere else. Contrastingly, the layout and interior is very small and subsided, with adoring and comfortable seats as well as an array of decorative Japanese photographs on the walls which create a lovely, soft atmosphere. The una-don was very tasty, quite expensive for a standard meal and the smaller portion size, at $21. The curry rice was very underproportioned, and the sushi restaurant does sashimi, over their cooked food, best.
FoodieGuru_770
Came here on the recommendation of a friend. It was really an authentic take on sushi and sashimi. We picked out our fish from the fridge and it was cut to perfection and the fish melted in our mouth. A must try to people who likes sashimi.
@_@
We picked six kinds of sashimi, all of them are nice. Very value for money. Udon is average nothing special. Won’t recommend the salmon fried rice tho.

Simplistic, serenity with older style self-service and interior ...

You have to love the plain "Pine" Japanese style interior, semi simplistic Scandinavian ... vintage ... 😆 it comes with a small Japanese grocery section in the middle, just in case you runout of some Soy sauce or Mirin. Lots of postcard photos all over the shop walls, capturing that Tokyo, Tsukiji Market and Japan atmosphere.

Then you can select your own Sashimi fish from the open fridge, be it Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna or whatever they have, quite an array of selections. Pick, pay, they'll sliced and served them for you ...

I went for the easy Prawn (singular) Tempura Udon, clear broth, a bit of chillies and it was awesome at $10.00 ... 9/10.
There are a few other classic Japanese fares on the simple and humble menu ...

Service can be slow, then again it's not a restaurant, enjoy the simplicity, slower pace older style Japanese service and food ... quaint, neat and tidy place. JT-19/04/2018.

I enjoy having fresh sashimi here. Prompt service. The restaurant is quite small but you can just takeaway. It’s very much like a marketplace. Recommend for sashimi fans!
Ryan Jinn Huei
Love this place! The old Japanese couple managing this place is friendly. Food takes awhile to come but no feet! Only negative is the scallops, the food here is fresh and tastes great!
Angel
I don’t know how to describe the place. It is not exactly a japanese cafe nor a grocery store because they are not selling enough merchandise! But like many small japanese eatery they do their best in what they offer in their small range menu. I don’t think they have many staff and the cashier is constantly busy helping at the kitchen as well so expect a long wait at the cashier to order your food. It’s worth it though.
As for the sashimi, you pick what you want from the “grocery fridge section” and let the cashier you want to eat them at the cafe and they will cut them up for you. The rice dishes are delightful as well.
Tip: there is only 3 tables of 4 and about 8 bar seatings so come early on weekend to get a seat. Also, don’t expect the food to come quickly.

Kind of hurts my heart to write this review, I love this place so much. Everything to the interior, food and the couple who owns the place. Recently seafood prices have gone up even places like hinoki and other sushi/sashimi place has increased their prices..as well as for tsukiji. Nothing out of the norm but Tsukiji was and is my hidden gem for high quality reasonable priced sashimi. PLUS is that you get choose your own fish from the fridge and they’ll cut it up for you.

My plate was $58: extremely high quality sashimi, the tuna quality being rated from I believe A-B the best being the tuna belly (toro). They have a wide variety of sashimi that other Japanese restaurant would not offer.

- surf clam
- ark shell
-octopus
- snapper
- halibut
- salmon
- grade A tuna

Udon $10: Very simple udon do not expect a “wow” factor because this place specialises in sashimi not hot food. Udon is good but not the best.

Service can be a bit slow but totally worth it.
Last time we came here this size of plate would cost around 45-50 dollars. Oh well still my favourite hidden gem place.

I have so much love for this cozy small eatery run by a Japanese old couple... so much so that... I visit this place pretty regularly whenever the sashimi craving hits heheh. This place was introduced by a true foodie friend of mine, so... yeap.

With the concept of pay-and-eat-only-what-you-take (from the fridge), you don't have to worry about over-ordering and over-eating! Also, the freshness of the sashimi and other dishes from the fridge is guaranteed through this.

They have Grade A and Grade B Toro for you to choose; salmon sashimi and trout sashimi; scallops; prawns; and sometimes oysters (depending on its availability).

The best part of it all is that the food there, even sashimi is reasonably priced! What a steal for A+ sashimi heh?!

In addition, Tsukiji's unagi don is superb too, with the unagi being well-marinated, juicy and tender while the gravy is flavourful. I would totally recommend this too!

Tips: Do check out their opening hours as they are a bit different from normal restaurants' & do go early so that you can grab the best pack of sashimi or whatsoever there!

I like the idea of choosing my own sashimi on the counter and eating it there on the spot. Had the tuna and sashimi belly and was amazing !!

We went to Tsukiji with high expectations. Unfortunately, everything about the place was dated. We ordered some salmon and king fish from the display fridge to have there and ordered the unadon as well. The fish was fresh but the fish wasn't cut nicely. Also, the unadon lacked sauce and the unagi's texture was soft which made it a little unpleasant to eat. Service was non existent and slow.
Ling
Been coming here since I was little for our sashimi fix, and it hasn't changed much except they now do hot food too. Still the same fitout and same Japanese couple who run the place. I love being able to pick and choose what I want, always fresh and reasonably priced. A wonderful little corner of delicious nostalgia.
LovesFood
Came for lunch. It feels like a Japanese grocery cafe where the refrigerator section you select from a very good selection of fresh seafood and there is a drink area you can pick sake or beer. The wait was expected like other reviews mentioned. When the sashimi came it looked beautifully presented. Enjoyed my meal with a cold beer. Heaven. Recommended and love to come back again.
Mrs Bunny
Expect long wait for a table and another long wait after ordering at this little Japanese restaurant - we waited for 45min for food. One hour parking is not enough. This restaurant runs by an old Japanese couple and provides fresh sashimi that you can pick your own at the open fridge. A very different experience than other Japanese restaurants. The sashimi is fresh. The sauce on the scallops carpacio is very yum. Takoyaki balls are not the best I’ve had but good for $6 only. I would come here again when I need my sashimi fix, only when I’m not in a rush.
Tasteforyourbuds
Brings back memories of Japan. Owned by two lovely old Japanese couple. Delicious quality sashimi and Japanese rice. Can’t ask for more. (Accept I wish the price was a little lower 😁) still worth multiple visits!!

Sashimi is beautiful and fresh, but everything else is a bit too plain and overpriced to be in a restaurant. The owners always seem to be too busy with many customers, so the service is a bit slow. But still good sashimi in a family style Japanese restaurant.

I have been here many times over the past 3 years, this is my go-to sashimi place whenever I crave for sashimi. I have taken my sashimifanatics to this place and they all agreed that the sashimi at this place is really fresh and well prepared.

Things to know before you go:
This shop is run by a Japanese couple. It is a relatively small store but has a much wider range of sashimi selection for a reasonable price if you compare to high-end Japanese restaurants.

Downside,
If you are in a large group ( for more than 5), there aren’t any huge round tables to accomodate large groups.

The wait can be quite long, as there are only two people working. It is worth the wait if you are not in a rush. If not, you can select a few from the fridge and ask the owner to cut it for you and take it home.

Don’t expect a lot of service, it is very casual but the experience is all very authentic. what you have to do is to , go to the fridge and pick the type of fish/ seafood you want ( usually come in one fillet) , it will have a price on it. Take it to the counter, they will then prepare it and bring it out for you. There are cooked food but I usually just go for sashimi.
Tsukiji is a tiny little Japanese eatery filled with the beige woods and a little grocery section. Love the feel of this place; intimate and cosy. Staff are friendly. What's great about this store is the concept; you can select different seafood which you can choose from the grocery section, and ask them to slice for you. Probably not the best place to come by in a large group.

Came here when I had cravings for okonomiyaki and takoyaki. To start off with, I ordered a cup of green tea which only cost $1 (other places would charge $2.50-$3). The owners running the place is a Japanese elderly couple who are really nice and kind people. There were generous amount of tako pieces in the takoyaki balls and sauce on okonomiyaki. The owners reminded me of the warm hospitality that you experience in Japan. Definitely recommend this place if you feel like having home cook Japanese food in a nice and friendly atmosphere.

Very impressed and satisfied! Being a retired chef and having spent quite a lot of time in Japan, I can certainly recommend this restaurant: the sashimi and sushi are very fresh and well cut (prepared on the spot with your choice of fish and shells), the carpaccio selection is several levels above the standard. I can not find a better and fairly priced Japanese restaurant in Melbourne. It is fully licensed and BYO as well. I have visited it several times and will keep doing so.
Sigrana
Definitely THE BEST SUSHI AND SASHIMI IN MELBOURNE. Excellent, very fresh, properly served and certainly above every other Japanese restaurant. The carpaccio is superbe. Well priced and BYO a bonus. It is very busy, so it is better to book.

This restaurant brings me back to Japan. We loved the concept of this eatery: simply choose the type of seafood from the fridge, line up and pay and the owners (a sweet old Japanese couple) slice the seafood for you and is served to you at the table. The sashimi was fresh and was reasonably priced for fish from Japan. There are books in the centre of the restaurant which you can purchase or pick up and read!

Here we have Takoyaki, Carpaccio (raw fish drizzled with special homemade sauce - delish), Udon noodles with vegetable prawn fritter, our selection of sashimi from the fridge) and cooked mackerel. We definitely recommend the sashimi here and the carpaccio - everything else was a hit and miss.

If you're a sashimi lover, I would highly recommend this place. It's a small hidden gem owned by a Japanese couple. We ordered the salmon and octopus sashimi which was of excellent quality, succulent and tested very fresh. However, the salmon fried rice was quite a disappointment. It was a bit mushy and the flavour was OK, nothing special.

Salmon and octopus sashimi - 9/10
Fried rice - 5/10
Service - 6/10 ( a bit slow )
Overall- 7/10

Great way to enjoy some sashimi. Love the grocery style restaurant where you can eat in or take home. Personally not a big fan of raw food but was pleased to see the high quality if seafood on offer.
Jaydaysss
Have been here several times. Great value for money and really good selection of seafood. The staff are always warm and friendly. Can't wait to come here again soon.
Food Hunter
Best Sashimi in the area. All ingredients were fairly fresh and various fish choices (strongly recommend all sorts of white fish). Cannot miss miso based mackerel!!! Have been there couple of times and still got a lot of unexplored dishes.

Enjoyable food experience in general. Never mind waiting for good food. 😄

Absolutely adore tsukiji! I'm a type of person who loves sashimi or seafood in general that's why tsukiji is the restaurant for me. Not only can you select your own seafood from the refrigerator but they slice it up for you and the sashimi is extraordinarily freshhh. It's super cheap as well, one of the best and inexpensive sashimi places around Melbourne. Forget about going to fancy/expensive restaurants to experience "sashimi" tsukiji provides with the highest quality products and it's at a reasonable price! Definitely recommend this place but the only flaw is that you have to wait a while since there is only a old couple working there..our sashimi plate took around 20 mins since we arrived early but people have waited longer then that since they arrive way after the restaurant has opened.

Price: $50 for the plate
Around 75 dollars for three with wine

The sashimi at Tsukiji was super fresh - loved the concept of picking what you wanted to eat from the little store and bringing it to the cashier to get it prepped and sliced 😍 The only downside of this place was the super long waiting time; from the 30minute wait at the line to pay and for the food to get to the table - so don't come here hungry & you'll leave feeling happy and full 👌🏼
Oodreiilittlepotato
Around $20pp for 2 rice, 1 miso, 5 different sashimi(s), 1 can drink, 1 buta-something, and 1 squid salad.
Sooooo full! The sashimi(s) are so fresh and deli😍.

1 out of 5 because we have to wait almost an hour until the sashimi are served + the queue. Tired of waiting... quite understand that there are only 2 people serve, cut, cook and cashier. but yeah the sashimi is worth it. We are so full👌🏻🔥

Taukuji is a tiny shop that sells sashimi as well as some Japanese groceries. You pick your favourite sashimi, take them to the register and if you choose to eat in there they'll cut up and plate them up nicely for you. Sashimi were oh wow so fresh! I like the idea of how it works, however as the shop seemed only to be run by a Japanese elderly couple waiting time was quite long.. However here really is worth a try.

Dad and I went here today to try out this place. There is a refrigerator aisle where you just select your sashimi or raw shell fish and go to the counter, then tell them you want "eat here". They will slice and prepare your raw seafood. We also got hot dishes such as udon and the okonomiyaki. Both were really good, but i still recommend the sashimi here.

Price for the sashimi that we chose
Medium sized salmon: $10.35
The ark shell: $6.25 (for a lot)
Tuna toro/ tuna belly: 13.65 (for about 5 slices)
The tuna toro was the highlight of the experience, the reason being it tasted so buttery and delicious. One kilo of tuna toro would be around $210

Overall: good restaurant, good vibe and great for students. But the food does come quiet slow because there are only a elderly couple working there, no waiters or waitresses.
Kimberley Wenya Loo
Amazing sashimi and very lovely Japanese couple who cook and prepare all the dishes 😊
Like how you can pick your fish portion and then they'll slice it up for you. Bonus points for a decent portion of wasabi too!

Fresh fresh & fresh ...recommend !
Must go for sashimi lover ...
Don wait ...quickly try it !!
Fresh & cheaper ...$50.50 for my platter & beer!
They available rice and others hot food ..
Nice & friendly couple Japanese old man boss..
Comfortable & quite place..so relaxing ~
I go to this place on the regular. Simply go in, choose seafood desired from fridge, take it to the counter and they will prepare it for you. Great value for money and always so fresh, best sashimi I have had in Melbourne to date and I do believe it is a hidden gem within Windsor/Prahran. If you're in the area please give this place a go.
Veronica Lin
Came here for lunch at 1:20. There were a lot of people waiting. Had to wait for 40min to order and another 20min for the food to be served. Guess we came at a bad timing. This small restaurant is run by an old Japanese couple. No waiters/ waitresses in the restaurant so everything was very slow, but the food was worth waiting for. The price was higher than that of a fish market, but lower than that of restaurants ordering by dishes. It was a cost efficient sashimi meal. We just happened to have ordered a bit too much sashimi for the two of us to finish.
Sammie
If you're a sashimi fan like me, this place is highly recommended for a visit. Definitely my first point of place for a great sashimi fix. Sashimi always consistently fresh. But do expect the serving times to be significantly long as I believe they have limited staff slicing the sashimi at the back of the store. Small store located a fairly busy street, if you don't keep an eye out for it you can easily just walk past it. Do expect parking to be limited as if you're lucky you'll find a few spots on the side streets.
Laurence Song
For me, this is the best sashimi I had in Melbourne. Fresh, tender. The sauce of Una-don is beautiful and I felt the eel is not frozen and heated in the microwave. Will definitely come back to try other sashimi.
Amanda Tan
Would have been a 5/5 if they actually served sushi on the day itself. If you wanna have their sushi you would need to order in a day advance which is a bit annoying :/

On the bright side, the sashimi is really fresh and melts in your mouth! Will definitely come back for the salmon sashimi!
Rodney Ho
Best sashimi in Melbourne! It is opened by Japanese people. You firstly choose any type of fish you want from the fridge and they will cut it for you. The fishes were so fresh and the environment was quiet enough for having a relax meal! Spent around $50 for the sashimi and the portion was simply too big for 2 persons to finish them off haha!
Wandering Ella
With its unassuming interiors, Tsukiji is one of those underrated places to grab sashimi. Definitely on the freshest sashimi I've had in Melbourne! They have a small 'freezer' section in the store where you can literally pick the cuts of fish (conveniently priced) for them to cut for you. You could take the cuts from home and my friend asked whether he could keep the sashimi in the fridge for three days HAHA. One of the owners just said WHAT loudly and insisted that they should only be kept for a day. I was laughing as I watched this conversation!

Their sashimi was excellent but the udon I had was just not worth the price. It was just way too watery. Other than that, I will definitely come back for more sashimi!

Tiny restaurant, not even sure what rating to give.

Ambience-wise, it feels like a mini tsukiji in Japan, smells fishy and no frilla, but traditional Japanese, run by 2 Japanese owners to boot! 2.5/5

Service - was a little slow, the man seemed more friendly than the lady, but I'm not too fussed about the service 3/5

Food- here is where it gets weird, the uni (sea urchin egg) was pretty well done, quite delicious and a pretty high standard, good value for money 4/5

Salmon - not as good as expected, nice texture but overall so-so only, possible that i didn't choose a great piece or it was the average cutting. Still acceptable nonetheless, but could be way better. 3/5

Tuna - bought the Tuna A. Very average, barely tasty, not worth the money in my opinion 2.5/5

Will I be back? Yes, because good uni for a reasonable price is pretty rare in Melbourne, and I'm looking forward to try the akagai (ark shell) and other raw foods they have there!

And it was very odd but one of my dishes had a strong fishy smell that I usually don't detect when I eat sushi. Maybe it was the way they cleaned the fish or something. Oh well, if it was the sea urchin, the smell is worth it!

Super Soba
My fifth time here and it still as delicious as the first time. Probably better to go during lunch time as they have a wider selection of sashimi. The cooked dishes were also really good. Had the gyoza and mackerel, both delicious
Georgia Elliot
The flavor always reminds me of my time in Japan. Very fresh sashimi prepared by an old Japanese couple. Just do not go when you are in a hurry as the service could be a bit slow some time as they take their time to make the meals (not sure if they run this little shop to kill some time;)
Xin Zhao
A very cool concept. Modelled in the spirit of the Tsukiji Tokyo fish market. Pick your own raw ingredients from the shelf and the chef will slice it up! Really amazing fresh salmon, scallop, shellfish sashimi. but stay away from very limited hot food.
Ali Parker
So bad it's funny. Their vegetable yakisoba was out of an instant noodle packet with a few soggy (wombok) leaves on top and way too much mayonnaise; that was it! Their miso soup (also out of a packet) was over-diluted to fill the bowl and consequently tasted like just hot water. You have to order sushi the day before!! Add to that, a very un-Japanese-like, blunt and discourteous service and I think a rating of 1.0 is very generous; I would like to have given it zero.
Mia Alibianche
My husband and I frequent this restaurant quite often for sashimi. Tsukiji is difficult to beat. The seafood and shell fish are always the best and very nicely served. BYOW is certainly a bonus, but if you try their Japanese Kikusui sake you will love it. Their prices are very reasonable and the choice of foods is wide.
Jesskaar
A cool concept store, where you choose your pre-portioned sashimi from the fridge, pay for it and they slice it up for you to eat in the store. It ends up being much cheaper than your standard restaurant sashimi prices, but just as fresh. They also do hot food, such as Japanese curry and your standard fried items such as Takoyaki and gyoza, but I didn't find that any of them were particularly worth their money.

The service was unfriendly and unhelpful, especially since we were very confused as to how to order when we first arrived in the restaurant. A warmer service would have made the whole experience a little more pleasant.
Avolette
Had a super quick lunch here....in and out in under 30 minutes. At least their services is quick! Didn't get to try the sashimi but I had some miso soup which was good. The salmon fried rice and the gyoza were nice but not amazing. Okonomiyaki wasn't great in my opinion so I probably wouldn't order that again. I liked the photos on the wall and being able to see various Japanese products in the store.
Doran
This authentic Japanese shop carries a small array of Japanese groceries (for things like seaweed, miso, mayonnaise, soba noodles, etc), and fresh cuts of sashimi and salads in the refrigerated area. You can buy the fish and if you choose to eat it right away, they will bring it to the back and plate it beautifully for you. You can also order tea and rice to accompany the sashimi, they provide utensils and soy sauce at the tables. It's a lovely little restaurant and a relaxing place to enjoy some plain and simple yet delicious sashimi. Be sure to check their trading hours as they are not open every day.
Ivy Yu Ti
Very homely interior, loved all the photos on the wall reminds me of the amazing trip I had in Japan. Very fresh sashimi which you can pick from the fridge and you can either take it home or have the owners slice it up for you.
Suburb Review
Fresh sashimi in Melbourne, which is quite rare here.
🐟 You first have to walk to their fridge, where you choose from a range of different types such as scallops, tuna belly, sea urchin, abalone, salmon etc
🐡 Then you take it to the counter and they will cut it up for you. You can order rice, miso soup and other japanese hot food from the menu. Be seated and they then bring it out for you. The presentation and slicing of the sashimi is perfect.
🐠 Sashimi is not cheap so don't be suprised with the total amount. Ours came down to $80 for two. The portion in the tray may look small but when its sliced its plenty, we didnt end up finishing
🐙Run by an elderly legit Japanese couple. They work really hard from prepping and serving so be patient when waiting for your order and lining up.

Close to the newly open middleton cafe on high st prahran. Do recommend 👍👌🖒

Tsukiji is a little Japanese restaurant run by a Japanese couple. Their service is slow but the seafood is super fresh and the variety is amazing!!!

They have sushi and cooked food but come here for the sashimi. You grab a basket and pick all the seafood that you can eat from the fridge. You then pay at the counter and they will slice the seafood and serve it on a plate.

It's my fav sashimi place and their variety is up there with one of the best. Their scallops, squid, shime saba and toro are a must!
JZY
(English Reviews Below)
Great in freshness and price. Feed yourself with loads of sashimi and won't cost your fortune. Even though a bit slow in service, I would just drink some sake and wait for a while then feed myself with more protein.
Amanda
Sashimi here is really good! Salmon belly is definitely a must. Had okonomiyaki and curry rice as well. Both were nice. This place is definitely worth heading out of the city for.
Kris Parry
I have just reacquainted myself with this gem. Being based in the CBD it's not often any more I get to eat lunch here anymore which is a let down to say the least. Unassuming in its appearance the Sashimi here is wonderful. Being able to choose the seafood of your liking and the cuts you prefer is unlike any other sushi and sashimi Resturant I have been too in Melbourne.

If you are in the mood for basic but authentic and delightful food in an unpretentious setting then I recommend Tsukiji!

If you love sashimi I would recommend that this place is a must go for you. Not only is what you get delicious it is also very cheap in comparison to other places available. You can choose which cuts you want and they will cut it for you.

They also do have ala carte menu items but for me the sashimi is what would keep me coming back. They also offer catering for all types of sushi and rolls.

When you name your restaurant the same name as the best fish market in Tokyo, you get high expectation. My friend took us here and said the sashimi was amazing.

At first glance the odd style of the restaurant is informal and casual. It functions as a sort of Japanese book store with a slight feel of being a 7/11 at the same time.

DO NOT LET THAT DETER YOU AT ALL. I suspect that this is a very authentic Japanese place not phased by grandeur and decor, but simplicity. The owner is the chef.

The open fridges on the side like you see at the supermarket is so you can choose what cut of fish or seafood you want and gives you the active control of being able to control how little or how much you want. You can see things like Salmon, tuna, Kingfish, Octopus and Scallops.

You go in pick what you want. I picked the salmon and tuna fillets. You buy them at the counter like you would at a 7/11 buying chocolate haha. Then the chef takes it away and cuts it into sashimi fresh for you.

Or you can even buy the seafood and take it home instead of going to the supermarket or fishmonger. I suspect some loyal Prahran locals do so, take it home and cook with it.

Sit down at one of the small tables with you friends, order some miso or appetizers and all the preparation should be done in 10-15 minutes.

Probably the best and most unique sashimi experience I've had in Melbourne. Very quiet, low traffic, only 3-4 tables perfect for an intimate date or quiet relaxed catch up with friends.
Mell
Love this place. Pick your seafood and they prepare it for you. Also choose from a small range of hot dishes on their menu. Good is fresh and delish. Byo or cheap Japanese beers avail. Friendly older couple provide a great service. We go here once a fortnight! Highly recommend the pork belly!
MelbfoodCritic
Basically it's a Japanese grocery also selling fresh raw fish. You buy & they cut it for you. Fresh sashimi & interior looks clean. More like no frill casual dinning for sashimi. Prices somewhat reasonable if u a raw fish fan. Staff friendly. Overall rating 3.8*
Chubbychompers
The best place for sashimi in Melbourne! I have been to this place numerous times, and while it can be very pricey, the quality is excellently maintained. The downside is that the service is very slow with only 2 staff; needed to wait for about 20 minutes before the sashimi was served to the table. Personally I think they also need more space to accomodate the lunch hour crowd.
Bryden Leung
A great place for sashimi. The old couple who run this place were polite and efficient (taking their age into account). I had a sashimi plater and the price was fairly reasonable. Food arrived a little bit slow but in high standard.
MF
This is a little Japanese restaurant/grocery runs by a lovely old couple located at Prahran. They have really fresh sashimi and a small selection of Japanese sake and beer at very reasonable prices. The place is already very old but it is still very well maintained. Service is actually very efficient to me since there are only 2 people running the place. A great place for people truly love sashimi and Japanese sake. Especially the part when you get to choose your favorite fish packs and having them cut into slices on the spot. This is a great experience that you won't get in any other places.
Melbourne Culinary
A while back while I was having breakfast in Windsor, a friend of mine showed me Tsukiji. A small cross between a Japanese grocery and sushi shop run by a Japanese couple, Tsukiji boasts some of the best and freshest sashimi in Melbourne and as a lover of sashimi I was incredibly excited when I had the chance to try it out.
Jody “Fro5tBit3” T
When we need a sashimi fix, this is where we go. We walk in, pick what portion size and fish we want, add into the mix as well will be some miso soup and some gohan and maybe a seaweed salad and we're set for the next 1/2 hour.

Authentic and original as how it should be. Waiting is nothing compared to the quality of food that we get. The older couple than runs the show might be a tad bit slow but worth the wait.
Albert
Came here for dinner with my partner. There are various selection of fresh sashimi. Carpaccio is a must try! The sauce was so delicious we had to order another one. Pork belly was really good as well as the takoyaki. If you feel like some snacks there's rack full of japanese snacls and rice seasoning to take home.
They're currently close from May 9- May 29, but can't wait to go back!!
Traceynn
A cute little shop with a grocery stand in the middle and a fridge of portioned seafood. A vast number of options in fish and they tasted extremely fresh. You make your selection of seafood, bring it to the counter and ask for dine in. We also had rice and miso soup on the side to eat with our selection. The cute couple would bring it to the kitchen and slice it up and serve it up for you on a plate. Be patient as it seems like theyre the only ones serving and preparing/cooking. Whoever is a sashimi/raw seafood fan, take them here.
Jodie Poh
Reasonably priced sashimi (extremely fresh too) and excellent side dishes, run by a Japanese couple. The braised pork belly is a must! There are all sorts of seafood for dine in and take aways. If you love sashimi, definitely give this place a try.
Boyfriend gives it 6/5 ( and he's Asian so you know it's legit)
Cameron
Went for lunch in this cosy little restaurant/Japanese grocery store. The sashimi fridge contained a large variety of fish; of which we took the salmon, tuna, scallops, kingfish, and sea urchin. The knife work that was presented in the form of sashimi on our plate was exquisite. The fish were fresh and delicious, and service was not as slow as I had imagined it to be. Would definitely visit again!
Snoopy
Fresh sashimi, this is the place to go. Choose your own fish with the price tag on, fish always fresh, reasonable price and slice nicely to serve. I like the fact can choose your own fish so you know what you're getting.

Love the $5 salad in the container, i think serve with octopus and fish roe, very nice flavour and texture.

Sea urchin always fresh, very sweet with its taste.

The dumpling may not be good looking as is, but they taste good, thin skin and flavoursome fillings.

The udon serve with clear soup and prawn tempura, hope they serve the tempura separately rather than soaking in, the soup base is very light and clear taste with seaweed.

Tried their salmon/eel fried rice in the past, very good too.

Allow waiting time, the owners work on their own pace, however totally worth waiting.
Mrs Lavender
The best sashimi place in Melbourne in my hear . Price is acceptable too . There were few seat only , if you really want their sashimi , better get there early if you don't want to wait for half an hour or more . Always packed, good quality good and nice owner .
Bruno Brown
One of the best sashimi I've had in Melbourne, also reasonably priced! Located away from Chapel street mainstream joints, I'd recommend getting there in smaller groups as seats are limited!
Herbie Hancock
brilliant! You can pick your sashimi from the fridge and have them slice it up for you in the back kitchen to take away. Extremely good value and always fresh!
Amy Millar
One of my favourites for sashimi!! Really cute cafe / food store, run by a Japanese couple who do the serving and the cooking so when it's busy you can wait a little while for your food to come out because it's just the two of them. You select the sashimi portions out of the open fridge and they'll cut it up and serve it for you
World In A Bite
I love this place! If you're after fresh sashimi, come here! So many to choose from... They even have Saba fish! ... You pick your sashimi and go to the counter to pay & get your sashimi cut up .. It's run by old Japanese couple , so the service isn't very good. Yes, expect to wait! But the male owner is very friendly with good sense of humour! Only $5 corkage fee!
Pyro
Went with the Mrs on the Thursday night, not very busy, got a seat straight away
We ordered the Buta-kaku (Japanese Braised Pork belly), Okonomiyaki (Vegetable Japanese Pancake), Sashimi Set (Sashimi+Miso+Rice) Squid Salad and Salmon from the fridge
The Pork Belly was flavoursome, vegetable pancake was ok, squid salad, very fresh and had a nice tang. Now the sashimi which consisted of salmon, tuna and kingfish, most people were right, very fresh and tasted delicious. The only downside of the place was the price, portion sizes were very small for what you pay for each dish
KH
Come as early as possible for seating and freshest sashimi. The variety is what makes this best sashimi in Melbourne. Broadbill, hapuka, snapper, garfish, king dory, salmon to name a few.
Huey Le
Slowest service that I've experienced. I walked to the counter realising that there is no menu to check. After 10mins, the old lady came out and tell me that the menu is "conveniently" placed at the back of the front entrance which guarantee new customers to miss that out. I ordered sashimi set and the food is quite ok. I come back on next day and it was extremely busy, there are really long queue in front of the counter and no one there to serve customers. I waited like 30mins and decided to go somewhereelse. If u have plenty of time on hand and don't mind about their slow service, lack of common senses in menu placement, then this restaurant is for you
Helli
FRESH! Loved it! I may have over ordered but managed to eat it all. The sashimi is great. Ordered also a prawn tempura udon Noodle soup, that was a bit disappointing seeing as though there was only one small prawn and lots of batter around the prawn. Will I be returning? Absolutely!!!
MyFoodBelly
For all you sashimi lovers out there, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret – there’s a little grocery-slash-restaurant in Prahran that serves high quality sashimi at a very reasonable price. Named for the famous fish market in Tokyo, this family-run Japanese joint has been my go-to whenever I crave a little bit of raw seafood.

The concept is simple – choose the packaged cuts of fish, scallop, octopus (or anything else) from the fridge, pay for it at the counter
Mabel Lee
Wanted to have dinner here on Monday but apparently it was closed so I decided to come back today (for lunch!) ordered their fried rice with salmon, una don and sashimi! The Unagi is really really good, worth the $21! And not to forget, their sashimi's really really fresh and chewy! Would definitely love to go back and visit again!
Kwanzai
Amazing sashimi. Super fresh and beautifully presented! Surprisingly well priced. Service can be slow as only the older Japanese couple who own it work there but they are very respectful. Just know that if you go, give yourself plenty of time because the prep takes ages but well worth the wait!
Eeyore
The service here is what I called Japan relax! So if you are in a hurry, don't bother coming here because you end up being more stress waiting for them to serve you! The food...well....it's on the expensive side! The sashimi is great, not that there's a lot there in the fridge to choose if you arrive late, but fresh! The hot food are quite average and way overpriced. I wouldn't be rushing back to this place and lining up for it!
Kimmy_desu
Quite a relaxing ambience, and we came here after anticipating for quite a while. We were planning to go all out tonight and pick whatever we want. When we got there it was 7:30pm and not much was left in the fridge, but we still picked some good packs and eagerly awaited for our platter. Hubby also ordered a una (eel) don and miso soup. We were disappointed with the una don because they only used the normal frozen packaged eel which can be easily obtained at Asian grocery stores, and it costs $21 for that. That is really overpriced for what you get. The miso soup was from instant packaged ones too but we didn't mind that too much because it was only $2 a bowl. The sashimi platter came out not long after we got the hot food and we were indeed satisfied with the quality although the fish was not that fresh anymore since it was already evening, were also a bit let down with no pickled ginger included... You essentially pay for the knife skills, nice environment and some varieties you can't find at normal Japanese restaurants such as Mentaiko (cod roe marinated in red chilli pepper). We were pleased to see that available. No point getting the hot food here imo, unless you really need some cooked food to serve as a base for your stomach to consume all that raw seafood (many people can't eat raw seafood or just cold food in general on an empty stomach). Sake can be a bit pricey but beers are reasonably priced. But who drinks beer with sashimi? For us it's hard to enjoy a delicious sashimi meal without sake.

This restaurant was recommended by friends. The sashimi is quite fresh and has lots of variety 🍣 However, it's a bit pricy. The plate costs $48. And we have waited for more than half an hour for the Sashimi.

I love the concept of a family oriented business as this usually indicate that each and every staff are fully dedicated in bringing their best towards prospering the business. This is not a common feat these days as most family members would have their own aims/objectives which may not even cross paths with anyone else in the family.

if you love eating sashimi, you should come here.. it is so cheap but great food. the restaurant is runing by a pair of japanese old couple…so I don’t mind about the serving time slow. the main point is the sashimi is so nice!!!
Adriannalovesfood
Overrated! We went to Tsukiji for lunch today (Saturday) It is a small restaurant owned by a Japanese couple. The wait was so long and we were expecting some good authentic Japanese food. However, the food was really disappointing and definitely not worth the wait. The udon tasted like noodles soaked in vegetable water and the prawn was still frozen! The fried rice was tasteless and wet! First and last time here!

In concept this place is awesome. However it seems they just don't stock enough sashimi to last the day, as come lunch time there's not a whole variety left to choose from. I had been warned about this and came quite early for lunch but was still a little disappointed at what was left. Overall the sashimi was good and there were some interesting choices, but I wanted to be wowed with more variety from a place specialising in selling seafood. During the busier hours, unsurprisingly the staff are a bit slow to attend the cashier while also preparing sashimi for those dining, and a queue quickly forms the length of the store. However they are lovely and the option for preparing sashimi for you is really appreciated. A lovely little place if you get there really early.

Have been here several times. Such a fantastic place for sashimi craving. Strongly recommend for sashimi lovers. Many kinds of fresh sashimi in the fridge to choose from. Although the service may be a little bit slow.
One more thing, remember to come earlier otherwise you will only get a much smaller variety left in the fridge for selection.

Tsukiji is such a good place to have sushi and sashimi! It's very similar to the real Tsukiji fish market in Tokyo, only different in size and location! Never regret going this place when your stomache asks for sashimi:D
TheBearReview
Great little place, part grocer part Japanese cafeteria. Excellent quality and very good selection of sashimi designed to be enjoyed at home. You can also pick your own and ask them to slice it up for you to enjoy in the shop. There is a small lunch menu, pretty good value but the serving is small. In a way it is great because you can supplement it with what you pick from the shelve - although it then becomes a $20+ lunch.

Love love love this place. Especially the plump scallops. Super fresh and sweet. Even though service was slow but the seafood totally made up for it!

Hidden gem for sashimi grade fish and some good sake. Never ate here, but have bought fresh fish to take home. Great quality (at a price) and good choice of fish species (Broad Bill is delicious; Ocean Trout; King Dory etc). The owner also brings in some pretty good sake you can't get elsewhere in Melbourne. Dassai 23 isn't your everyday sake; plus the lesser Dassai 37 and Dassai 50 for more affordable drinking.

Used to be our favourite place for sashimi. The good quality has dropped by a little. Hope they will keep it up!

Tsukiji in Prahran functions more like a seafood deli. Patrons can pick items off the fridge and request the staff to slice them up for takeaway or more consumption in the premises. Service can be a bit slow especially during peak hours as it is run by an elderly couple. It seemed popular with people coming in on a Saturday evening just to have sashimi.

I can’t remember what I had that day. All I know we had a lot of fresh sashimi – mostly salmon. But what stood out for me was for the melt-in-the-mouth scallops which tasted sweet and fresh, as though they were just out of the dish.

We don’t have a Tsukiji fish market in Melbourne, but we do have a very mini alternative with the same name. If you are a sushi or sashimi lover then Tsukiji in Prahran is a must visit. It’s more like a Japanese mini mart or deli, and when you walk in your food is waiting for you…but it’s waiting for you in the “shopping aisle”. What we’ve named the “shopping aisle” is where you select fresh, premium cuts of fish like ocean trout, tuna, prawn cutlets, sea urchin, scallops and then take them to the main counter to be sashimi’ed free of charge. A fish feast of this proportion and quality would normally cost you about $40-$60 a person at a good Japanese restaurant, but at Tsukiji the outlay for a Sashimi platter like this will cost you around $45 to share between two ($22.50 each). This is real value and begins making you question what you would normally pay for a good Sushi/Sashimi lunch. The great thing about Tsukiji is being able to eat in (although seating is limi

I found the fishes to be delicious but the freshness...

This little shop is in Prahran just a few blocks away from Chapel st. It isn't a real big Japanese fish market but it is close to it. They do fresh fish and they have lots of that in their grocery store. They also do limited amounts of sushi and its whatever is there. It is for the health freaks and those that love traditional but affordable Japanese. They don't do ramen but they do udon, okomiyaki, gyoza, takoyaki. And no they don't do Agedashi tofu. You can also buy tradition Japanese greengrocers and fresh fish from there. salmon seaweed salad and tobiko Other fish I loved the service. The Japanese woman was lovely to her customers. And yes they EFTPOS but its for purchases over $15 as there are huge bank fees that have to be paid and they wanted to save money on those Primarily I was here for the udon which I read good reviews about it from Fatboo and others online. That and the sushi. I wanted udon on this particular cold day in Melbourne. The udon was nice- it was smooth and sl

Went there after reading all the rave reviews but was a little disappointed with what we had today.

Tsukiji is first and foremost a Japanese produce store selling fresh seafood, with their lunches operating as a sideline enterprise. On the days where they do lunches, you can find the menu pasted on a wall at the back of the shop.

Authentic, quaint little place with amazing fresh seafood. There is little I can write about this place that others have not already written... I went nuts at the fridge, so much choice! So fresh! and very reasonably priced. Seriously, do the sashimi. It's amazing, and only the freshest fish of the day is available, so it does change on a day to day basis... on the day we arrived, we had the tuna toro, ocean trout, kingfish, surf clam, ark shell clam, scallops and salmon, from the fresh section, and smoked mussels, squid salad, broccoli salad, braised pork belly, and takoyaki as well as serves of rice.

Give the hot food a miss, the braised pork belly and the takoyaki were only so-so, the rice was disappointingly overcooked... but OH. MY. GOODNESS. The SASHIMI WAS AMAZING!

Yes it is a tiny little place, and yes service can be slow at times, but they are super friendly, and what do you expect when you serve such quality food at such tiny prices! Take my word for it, I live on the other side of town but it's well worth the trip there.

It's so amazing that it's now fast becoming a regular spot for us to go after work for a lazy dinner. For around $25/ per person, it's an amazing spread of the finest quality seafood you'd find in Melbourne.

Finally a genuine Japanese place. The owners are Japanese which already gives a good showing. The sashimi was beautifully presented and fresh. The cute supermarket also provides a different experience. I'm half Japanese and I must say this has been the best experience for sashimi so far here in Melbourne. Keep it up. Gambare!

Perfect place to have a sashimi feast. You can select your own sashimi and ask them to cut for you for dine in or take away, the quality of fish is superb and they also have donburi and bento set to eat with, just amazing, cheap and tasty sashimi!
Di Tong
Select from range of fresh seafood and create you own sushi plater (sliced for you on the spot). Food is fresh and nicely presented with an affordable price! Definitely recommend this place, cheap and fresh!

The sashimi here is great really fresh, but be prepared to wait & wait & wait & wait! Especially on the weekends I waited 20mins in the line to pay for my order another 20mins after to get it. I don't understand why can't they hire an extra person to help out especially the weekends. If you have a lot if time of hand then go ahead but be prepared to wait up to an hour for your food.

I have tried this place so many times now. Initially, after reading so many good reviews I knew that I must try this place and I was not disappointed. The sashimi set was delicious. Fresh sashimi, the salmon melts in your mouth! They have consistent with all the times I had been here and I will definitely come back here for more sashimi. Just a heads up, this place is run by 2 elderly Japanese couple and sometimes service can take a little bit longer. I must add the wait is worth it!
Bigeater
Been to this place for many years, very fresh sashimi and can be freshly sliced for you on the spot, but just a bit of waiting time if it's packed. But definitely worth waiting!
Sun Khalil
Reaaaally good sashimi, best ever! I was eating so full and take away some! Definetally come back again!

Superbly fresh sashimi in a small family-run joint. I've discovered Tsukiji this year and I can't sing enough of its praises. This is a sashimi-specialty joint and it doesn't disappoint with the freshness of its produce. My recommendation would be the kingfish carpaccio, followed by the mixed sushi. They also do a decent tasty homestyle gyoza, just don't go expecting anything too refined or delicate. As other reviewers have noted, sometimes you might have to wait a bit at peak hour. After all, it is a family place run by a friendly older couple having to deal with long queues beyond their control. Aside from that, it's a real hidden gem of a place.

Love this lil Jap stall! Visited this place 2 days in a row!

Love the fresh and quality sashimi which you can select your own from the shelves.

Their lunch menu is also good! Unadon, gyoza and miso soup were all yummy and taste very authentic like what I've eaten in Japan.

Lovely stall owners!

Pls note that there are no lunch menus on Wednesdays! Best to reach before 2pm :)
EW
A lovely place. Love the friendliness of the staff and we really enjoyed their fresh sashimi! Been there three times and will be back again !

Casual, great sashimi. Tsukiji is one of those places quite rare in Melbourne which are small, sincere and high quality. It's also great value, especially when it come to the sashimi. However, as usual for places like this, there are some limitation. There is not much seating available, and it is open only for lunch from noon until after 2pm.

For sashimi, you select your fish from an open refrigerated shelf which displays a clear plastic wrapped portions of fish. The prices are on the packages. You then take this to the counter, and it is expertly slices, attractively arranged and brought to your table. If you love sashimi, this is perhaps the best experience in Melbourne, as it is very reasonably priced as well.

Other dishes are also very good, with a "home made" feel to them. This applies especially to the Udon noodle soup and the Gyoza dumplings.

To make matters better, the stereo plays modern era jazz music -- a real rarity in Melbourne!
Kell
Wonderful place. I love that customers are able to choose blocks of A-grade fish from the grocery section and have them cut up for you into a sashimi platter to eat in! There's a wide selection to choose from but I enjoyed tuna sashimi the most. The sashimi is incredibly fresh and reasonably priced, but be careful because it's so easy to go overboard and order too much!

I would recommend this to all sashimi-lovers and would definitely come back to try their made-to-order sushi.

I have been going to Tsukiji for years however I will never go there again.
They are getting very busy and only a few seats are available there so I've decided to get take away. After waiting for 15 mins in the line and 20 mins for my takeaway sashimi set, I got into my car and found that there wasn't any sauce soy in the pack.
I went back in, asked the lady for some soy sauce cos I was planning to eat in my car. I was only expecting to pay for some little "soy sauce fish" but she asked me to buy a bottle of soy sauce.
I wasn't able to response then she asked her husband to come out (who is also the only chef of the cafe). It was very embarrassing when the whole bunch of people in the line waiting were looking at me.
The husband got the whole story from his wife and he grabbed 3 "soy sauce fishes" and threw them onto my hands as if I was begging for money! I felt very humiliated.
Yes I still like their food but I won't be waiting for 35 mins to get my food and be humiliated by them anymore!

Hidden gem. Best sashimi fix in Melb. Nuff said!

Best Japanese Deli in Melbourne. Freshest and best Sushi ever. They sell Japanese groceries too. Simple simple simple.

Fresh sashimi in town!. This is the hidden sashimi spot in Melbourne. Sashimi set $14 is really great.
Other places would be charing more but $14 is super good deal for sure. Moreover all sashimi are so fresh. I am Japanese and I think I know what is great sashimi. It is off chapel street and this place is so easy to pass through without finding but it is really worth going.
Molly
Hidden sashimi gem. The sashimi lunch set is great value, with fabulous quality sashimi and nice sides. There are only a few eat-in seats, but I've never seen it full, which always surprises me. They also have a tiny supermarket section where you can buy Japanese groceries and seafood to take home. The only complaint I have is that they are only open for lunch :(

Best sushi in Melbourne!!!. This place is amazing for genuine authentic sushi. I have lived in Japan for 3 years and love my Jap food. This place also stocks Japanese ingredients like soy, wasabi, ginger, miso, tofu etc.

Owner is Japanese and has been making sushi for years...

They also sell small slabs of raw fish like Tuna, Salmon, Kingfish where the owner cuts them up for you to make your own sashimi platter to take home.

Must try :))
Courtney
Great find!. This little Japanese shop and cafe has a fresh sashimi set, with a mix of sashimi, rice, miso soup, and seaweed salad for $12. Great find, but only open for lunch.

But I made up for lost time, you bet I did. In the space of just 18 days, I managed to visit Tsukiji not once, not twice, but three times.

Tsukiji is a small, neat japanese cafe in Prahran that offers a very limited menu however it sells small slabs of fresh sashimi ready to be cut to order. We came here as we were craving Sashimi and thus selected a few plastic wrapped trays of Atlantic Salmon, Tuna, Kingfish and Scallop. With side dishes of Takoyaki and Gyoza, it came to a total of $45. They also sell japanese groceries that you can browse while waiting for your food to be prepared. A large platter of Sashimi arrived and it was more Sashimi than we expected and completely sated our Sashimi cravings. The Takoyaki and Gyoza were decent but nothing too great. Sashimi Platter - Tuna, Scallop, Kingfish & Salmon Takoyaki & Gyoza A good place to visit when I feel like Sashimi so I will be back however I've had enough to last me for a few weeks at least. Food: 7.5/10 Service: 7/10 Value: 8/10 Will I return? Yes, only for the fresh sashimi though. Tsukiji 237 High St Prahran VIC 3181 (03) 9510 2318 Posted by Catherine. x at
