This is a cool cafe cum dinner spot at The Spot in Randwick. The menu is a bit of a mixed bag of Aussie classics like grilled sandwiches, salads and burgers, as well as some Middle Eastern favourites like falafel, fattoush, couscous etc. A decent enough selection to keep everyone happy.

We lunched here on Easter Sun and had a lovely time, sitting outside on a warm autumn afternoon. Apart from the noise of passing traffic (although it was quieter than usual) it was mostly pleasant and relaxed. Service from two pretty young Asian ladies, neatly dressed in black uniforms, was courteous, attentive and efficient. The manager too, who we only really interacted with to arrange the booking and to make our payment, was also super nice and friendly.

Six of us lunched. We ordered couple of coffees, three steak sandwiches, one with chips and two with a side salad, a beef burger, Moroccan lamb and a haloumi salad and an extra side of sweet potato chips. Everyone enjoyed their meals. My steak sandwich was neatly constructed with a thin tender and tasty piece of steak and topped with tomatoes, onion relish, pickle, beetroot, cheese, lettuce and a dash of mayonnaise. Despite all of that, it was still quite easy to eat, without all the ingredients squelching out. The fresh salad was a perfect accompaniment. To end, we choose two delicious, tasty cakes: Orange and almond, and a strawberry cheesecake. The perfect way to end the meal.

After our $30 Ent Book discount we paid $128 for a couple of coffees and cold drinks, six main courses and two desserts. I was satisfied with that. Don’t forget to ask the manager for a loyalty card: Each $20 spent gets one stramp, and you’ll get a $20 credit after 10 stamps.

The interior was been tastefully decorated in a retro style with plain wooden furniture, a prominent front counter, and behind it,rows of neatly stacked bottles. A smattering of greenery and low lighting complete the picture, and helped to create that perfect balance between casual and stylish. As mentioned, we sat outside on comfortable wooden, upholstered chairs. Two tables pushed together created plenty of room to fit all the drinks and the dishes.

Toilets are a tad grotty. They’re out a back door, and down a long, dark corridor past the kitchen. There’s a single male and a single female toilet. In the male one, there was no soap in the dispenser and no hand towels, just a rather useless 1970s style dryer, whose sole function seemed to be to make a lot of noise. I didn’t bother saying anything to the manager, but these toilets are in need of an upgrade and a lick of paint, to make them more appetising. It’s a pity to let something as basic as that mar what is otherwise a well presented cafe.

Being a public holiday, we were able to find a parking outside the nearby real estate office on Perouse Rd. Normally though, I don’t even try to find something on this strip and just head straight down to Canberra Street, where I can usually find something.

Overall, we had an enjoyable lunch and everything ran smoothly. We took the precaution of booking ahead although it probably wasn’t necessary but in any event, all my email enquiries were promptly and politely responded to.

Definitely worth a return visit.

Came on a Saturday, most tables filled but still a couple of empty tables. Decor somehow reminds me of pulp fiction x hipster vibe, service was polite and efficient.

Ordered the mushroom & chicken linguine with truffle. This was pretty good, you could kind of taste the truffle. Not as sickening as usual Carbonara. 4/5

Truffle fries: truffle oil used I think, could really smell it for the first minute then died down. Tasted pretty good though! 4/5

Eye fillet steak with truffle potato gratin: can you tell we really love truffle? Haha. Steak cooked medium rare to perfection. Not a fan of the pepper sauce. Gratin was nice, though I didn't taste the truffle at all. 4/5

The wait for the mains was exactly 55m, kinda long for two people, chips came out about 10-15m after waiting. If you're wanting a quick feed, it's probably better to not come on a Saturday around 7:15pm like we did.

All in all food was well priced, and for the price, I don't think I could've done much better!

If it was closer to home I might visit regularly but being over an hour away, I probably wouldn't return unless I was in the area and craving this kind of cuisine, as it wasn't out of this world. Grill platters on menu did look enticing though, might come back to try those!

Nice little cafe. The menu seems healthy enough. The food was taste, they could definitely improve on the presentation and plating of the food. The atmosphere of the place was good, staff were very friendly. Good all rounder cafe. I would recommend.
