Review The Dog Hotel - Randwick

Lorenzo
It's a good and big pub. Dog friendly. Good cold spilled Guinness and many other beers from all over Australia and over sea. Food is OK. Ceasar salad was on average but the lamb pie was good. I think it's one of the best pub around together with coach and horses. I don't know if the DOG does happy hour cheaper beer, though.

Has got a lot better recently. Don't know if it is the new management or if it is down to a new chef but the Sunday Roast is great. Very tasty and decent portion sizes. All the staff are also very friendly and helpful. Had a small birthday gathering here recently and they were really helpful regarding storing and bringing out the cake for us etc. Recommend.

Ever since Merivale took over the food has improved ten fold and the staff are super chill and friendly. New management hasn’t messed with the place at all and it’s basically the same as before but with the best happy hour, awesome beer on tap and as previously mentioned the yummiest food. Still kid friendly and staff are welcoming on arrival with good tunes playing throughout. Well done guys.

A really nice ambience reminiscent of an old British pub. Good food and a nice selection of beer. A good place to bring children too.

My expectations were a little low before we went but actually the dog bistro is quite nice with an open kitchen and nice seats and open fires! The courtyard is also well done. Food is tasty, but the portions are just way too big the nachos were massive! I didn't even get through half (and that was without the beef) which seems a waste, perhaps do different portion sizes you can choose from. Also one major turn off was the TVS showing sport, absolutely no one in the restaurant was watching and lowers the tone I feel. Of course they should be on in the pub part, but why the restaurant? As it's all families and couples.

Great place to catch up with friends. Dog friendly pub. Dogs allowed in the beer garden. Today tried the Sunday roast - generous serving of beef (have choice of chicken too). Served with gravy big size potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, broccoli and gigantic Yorkshire pudding. Service was a bit slow (think people suffering post covid) and may be attitude was a bit off still a great place to go. Also serves your usual fare burgers, fish n chips, chicken parmie. Good selection of cocktails too. Will go again as things can only get better now that everything is opening up.

We really wanted a bottle of wine after the bottle shop had closed so we went in and bought a $55 bottle of wine and tried to sneak it out, the bouncer caught us and made us take it back, the manager REFUNDED us!!! What a legend! Although we didn’t get wine from the DOG we got wine elsewhere for 1/3 of the price. Five stars for the leniency! Legends! Highly recommend stealing wine from here. They are very amenable to thieves. Especially middle aged women thieves.

Came for the Sunday roast and UFC with my puppy. Was greeted by a super lovely member of staff. Unfortunately, I did not get her name, but she was very attentive and brought our pup some water straight away and said hello. The roast was DELICIOUS - highly recommend! Came very fast and was a generous serving. Beer list was a bit of a disappointment. Would have liked a bit more variety, but still enough to keep most people happy. We ended up having to move tables mid way through the UFC event because reservations are for a max of 2 hours. I get it, but it meant we had to move around a lot to try and watch the event with the dog. It might be worth considering reservations around specific event running times. Staff and management were very good at maintaining RSA and safety standards. Will absolutely be returning very soon. A wonderful venue overall.

I just had a great staff night at this place to farewell a much loved colleague and the staff there were so awesome and perfect that i didn't even care how bad my burger was, i mean, don't get me wrong, I wanted it to be bad, it was a Cheeseburger. But these guys have nailed it, i mean like it's as if it's someone's job to sit on the burger before it leaves the kitchen. That's awesome! At one point, i was so drunk on jugs of the 79 different varieties of local craft beer, I dropped my Cheeseburger and it just bounced off the floor straight back into my hand and I just took a bite like nothing happened. That's awesome!

The food is alright. Service here however was appalling. Trying to order a tea for someone pregnant and had to wait at 20 minutes for someone to come to the bar to pour some hot water into a pot and provide a couple of tea bags. Had to approach the bar staff twice before someone would operate the machine. This place seems more interested in serving alcohol and bar food.
James Brandwood
The food is good and beer is good. Unfortunately they seem to have some uninterested staff now, no professionalism or character. Getting ignored in the Bottle Shop tonight by 2 staff who couldn't be bothered to even say 'Hi I'll be with you in a minute'. Had just had dinner there too but had to go to Chambers Cellars for my beer instead. Poor.

Went for lunch, had the special $12.50 steak chips and salad. Slow cooked for six hrs,, melt in ur mouth beautiful... Love what they have done to the place Looks great...
Kelly Noonan
Great pub but don't order the pizza, it was practically raw! The regular bistro food is much better.

Food has been outstanding since new management, however noting the serving size and value has been decreasing. Two for One Tuesday logic is twisted. Ordered two $22 meals and then two $17 meals. Got charged $44, instead of $39 - where normally you would get the same or lesser value for each meal. When I asked the staff, they said sorry but nothing they can do. I suggested next time should I come back and order each deal separately to get the best deal for my group? Answer was yes. Just blows me away with this economics concept. Really love this pub and want it to exceed. Have already seen great changes and owners obviously listen to customers. But jeebus.

Went for dinner last night and it was amazing. It has a great beer garden and inside, particularly upstairs is really nice. Highly recommend going there for a meal or even just a few drinks.

Completely shit place staff on phones or talking to each other before you get served over priced food and drink never go back again

Unfortunately the wonderful Hanger Steak was ruined by a horrible overpowering spice rub that destroyed any flavour of the beautifully cooked meat - it's totally unnecessary and I ended up cutting it off. Chips weren't all that flash and I'm sure they can easily improve on these. My wife's salmon wasn't exactly a decent serve considering the sticker price of $28. My nephews jalapeño burger was excellent. Would be keen to try a few other menu items before rubbing them off the list. Great selection of craft beers on tap.

I asked the girls on the bar downstairs what sours were on tap, they pointed me first to a pilsner, then a cider, and then finally to an XPA . Luckily the guy upstairs saved it by offering me a farm house ale or Brett IPA, but was still a tad disappointing!

LOL Despite it’s name and it coming up in google as dog friendly in the search, this is actually not a dog friendly venue... staff were actually baffled and confused that we wanted to bring our dog.. into ‘THE DOG’ - hilarious.
Evonne Santarita
Can't fault it. We visit The Duke of Gloster every month and we love the service and atmosphere of this place. The food is delicious and generous. Staff are friendly.
Terry Farrelly
Held my 40th there. Great food, great service and a great atmosphere. Plenty of room and a lovely venue with a balcony to grab some fresh air.
Francesca Papaioannou
Love the trivia every Wednesday.. staff are always friendly and food is never more than a 10 minute wait on a busy night.
Emma Fraser
I don't usually write reviews but have to say that this place has Fantastic wood fired pizzas - just delicious! And only $12.50 on Saturdays.
Jess Barber
Really nice cozy pub, ticked all the boxes like open fire, kid friendly, stuffed animals on the walls, serves nice Sunday roasts until late and really good sized portions...BUT was very over priced for the beers/drinks, nearly fainted when asked for $28 for a pint, a schooner & kids drink! They should mention their drink specials or make them more visible...Also, the kids meals are $15!!! Usually don't pay over $10. But all in all was pretty good!

The DOG hotel is a place anyone should visit if they’re keen on a good pub feed (family friendly!)

Good selection of typical pub food - ranging from fish and chips, to burgers, to parmi’s. Prices are good and there’s a lot of seating available, whether you want a feed or a drink.

Serving sizes are great (couldn’t finish my fish and chips as it was so big) for their prices and lots of parking available in the back streets behind the pub.

Definitely recommend!

Food recommendation: chicken parmigiana🍗

These days a dinner out is always a treat. When you have a two-year old in tow that treat always seems like not a treat at all. So on one rare night, we had a treat (or something like that!) at the Dog Bistro in Randwick.. The venue that we came from on was just a short distance to the Dog Hotel, so we decided to walk. As the hotel is located along the main road going to Bondi Junction parking slots are limited.
Zimok1957
Wow love it the food is so fresh the service is fast have a look at the menu for the specials for the day book a table
Simply the best friendly for kids

Ok I have a love hate relationship with this place... I love it as my local where we go for the specials (especially steak night!) but every time I venture off and try something else on their menu, it’s disappointing. Last time ordered the creamy seafood marinara pasta and left the entire plate, it was inedible, and I’m no fussy eater. Would recommend just sticking to your classic pub
meals here and you won’t be disappointed.

Have always been to the DOG for a drink but never a meal so thought it would be a good idea to try one of the permanent daily special of Rotisserie for $12.50. Tried the 1/2 roast chicken with roast vegetables and the pork belly twice cooked with minted pea risotto. Great deal for $12.50 though there could have been more cracklings on the pork belly and the risotto was a bit cold in comparison to the pork. Would go back to try the Friday 2 for 1 steak night. Great beer garden area for a casual dinner and/or casual drink.
The RnB Diary
After being here at opening launch, I came back with a friend who lived nearby for Sunday Roast. The chicken was succulent and tender. From my earlier visit, I knew the roasting process took place right in the open plan kitchen where customers could witness how the meat was slowly cooked when the moisture and flavours were all well preserved. The fat from roasting then dripped through the grill to the tray underneath where the potatoes were laid out. What a great idea! The potatoes were delightful as well, crispy outside and warm and soft in the middle. Apparently this pub is run by the same folks as Dove & Olive, I can see the resemblance in the interior decoration and some part of the menu such as the $12.50 daily special. It was a good pub with decent beers and food, much needed in this part of Sydney.

Went there last night and the food was mediocre at best. The place is grossly understaffed so it takes ages to get a drink or order food. When the food finally arrives it does not justify the price
After checking several cutlery stations and asking 3 staff members for a fork we were forced to eat a variety of meals with knives and spoons!
TrufflePig
caught an eye of the craft beer selection and bar menu and were happy with the offerings so stayed downstairs. All the of the pub favourites were shouting out to us, all with a bit of an advanced offering: Lasagne Spring Rolls; A porterhouse with its own sides, unavailable for the usual pepper/dianne/salad/chips fitout; Wagyu Nachos with 'torched cheese'. Everything seemed pretty promising and prices were rather attractive, not to mention a relatively lively late Sunday night crowd.

Sadly, whilst still good, everything just fell that little bit short. Wagyu Nachos ($16) lacked any crispy jalapeno, avocado, chilli and tomato jam, and the crispy onions, leaving the flavours still meaty, yet just a little bit too heavy and bland. I wouldn't even call the cheese 'torched' in any sense. The batter in the Southern Fried Chicken Wings ($12) was far too thick, and in turn not crispy, moreso chewy and sticky and really needed salt. The "Dog's own chilli sauce" was fiery, yet seemed to be the same habanero sauce from bottles available at the condiment area. We loved the flavours in the 'Jalapeno Pepper Jack Burger' ($17) but the chips were really just average and unsalted and ratio of milk bun to filling was disappointing.

Service was relatively friendly, and our food arrived pretty quickly. As I mentioned, there are quiet a few craft beer options and they have some decent wines on offer by the glass, not exceeding $10. The food isn't totally bad but it's sold in a promising fashion and the end product doesn't accurately reflect expectations. Maybe upstairs is a where the focus remains.

Thoroughly recommend the food since the update of the restaurant. Our group of 6 had one of the banquets. There was a lot of variety in the dishes with a French inspired twist.
I Ate My Way Through
For the Surry Hills pub folks out there, you’ll be familiar with the names Dove & Olive (winner of Time Out’s Pub of the Year 2015) and Keg & Brew (highly commended for Time Out Pub Revival Award 2015 and nominated for Best Beer List 2016). Both of these pubs went through amazing transformations from shabby pasts into Sydney craft beer and pub grub hotspots. What you may not know, is that the guys at Good Beer Company are behind the success of these two Surry Hills institutions and now they’ve brought the winning formula to Randwick, launching their third pub revival project – Duke’s Bistro.
Does My Bomb Look Big In This
New Orleans was the inspiration behind the Duke’s Bistro refit of the upper level of The Dog Hotel in Randwick. The Dog forms one point of the Good Beer Company’s holy pub trinity that includes the Keg & Brew, and the Dove and Olive in Surry Hills.Your French Colonial experience starts as soon as you ascend the pub’s chandelier-lit stairwell through a lush green mural painted by local artists Jo & Jo.The staircase opens out into a large open-plan, sunny yellow dining room, where a long communal table stretches the length of a well-equipped kitchen.Like most foodies, my eye is instantly drawn to the gleaming pair of shiny, new rotisseries. They form one axis of Executive Chef Dwayne Baber’s sharing menu that combines French inspired dishes with slow cooked American meats. As New Orleans is the place where French meets Americana in unholy matrimony, the ideas behind this menu combination aren’t untested. Though instead of delivering the French-American-Creole blend you might be expecting, Duke’s is turning out a straight Colonial blend. The moist, flavourful Duck Rillettes ($15) with pickled cauliflower, cherry mustard and crisp bread is a good place to begin. You'll also find a clever Bone Marrow Brûlé ($14), which tempers the indulgently rich split marrow bones with burnt sugar tops, pan-fried oyster mushrooms and micro-herbs. It’s so decadent you might...

Love this place. Great to come in with a few friends and enjoy the spoils of the amazing selection of craft beer on offer (if you're into your Carltons and VBs, don't fear, they are still there). Food is great, with a better menu than just the usual "pub grub". Southern fried mushroom burger, AMAZING!

Naturally because of the name of this venue, I thought I would ring to find out whether it was actually dog friendly. I was advised it was indeed but at the courtyard. A week later I brought my dog with me and checked to confirm again in person, but was grumpily advised even the courtyard was not dog friendly. The craft beer on offer looked amazing, but I couldn't sample them because of this, and sadly won't be back.

This used to be one of the best local pubs in Sydney with a great atmosphere and old school charm, now it feels like I've walked into a very try hard, cluttered, tacky, poor imitation of an American style pub. The food is mediocre at best and the beer selection although vast is over priced and often the staff can't give you a description of what you are buying e.g flavours/ comparisons. It's just really unorganised and I can't say I will be back anytime soon.

This pub was previously the "Duke of Glouchester" and had a great 2 for 1 specials night basically every night, cook your own steaks included and an amazing vegetables and salad bar you served yourself. It has undergone a renovation and turned into a hipster craft beer / American location that removed the 2 for 1's (until they realised no one came and now it's on offer once a week, just not so good).

Negatives aside, the new meals are DELICIOUS. I had the "fancy" steak atop cauliflower purée and fried artichokes. It was well cooked and very tasty. There's also burgers, salads and risotto. Pricier than before but yes tastier too.

There's an array of craft beers, you can watch the footy or chill in the beer garden.

As a local who used to go to the regularly things have changed and not for the better. I have given the new pub a go thrice now and it's just not the same. Bring back the old menu the share plates, the lamb etc.Keep it simple people! Seems like your trying to fancy it up
And isn't working. It used to be hard to get a table here on a week night but now it's the reverse! Won't be my 'go to' any more sadly.
Lizzy Haire
Overpriced, lack of variety, poor value.
$9 for a bland schooner of cider, $9 for a schooner of craft beer.
Hardly anything to choose from on the menu - no pizza. Unable to swap brioche for Turkish bread for steak sandwich & unable to have it toasted ?? Really ???
Why is that so difficult ?? Can only have Turkish bread if having chicken burger ???
Won't be back 👎🏻

Great renovation, nicer food and great craft beers on tap! Thank you.
Downside: lack of service!!! Dirty tables, plates not cleared for hours. Staff busy chatting. Only come around clear glasses 1 an hour. Beer kegs ran out, no bar staff could fix kegsto sell more beer.
attentikn to detail matters. Bc this could be a gem for the randwick locals!! Previous visits were goid.

Finally some decent beer! Really happy with the fabulous new range of craft beers at The Dog. The renovations are lovely and the new menu is delicious. I'm now proud to say it's my local.
Blahblahblah
Poor food poor service. Went for dinner. Had to scrape the veg off the bottom of the serving dish. Asked for fresh veg, told we had to finish the leftovers from lunch first.
2 for 1 deal tho, so u get what u pay for I guess.
Marlene1704
Hideous Food. Had 5 small plates; Pork Belly, Duck, Garlic Prawns, Chicken Wings and Salt and Pepper Squid. Pork Belly: tough, marinade too thick and tasteless. Duck Pancakes: dry and tasteless. Garlic Prawns: ordinary and under cooked. Chicken Wings: untecognisable in taste, as chicken and same marinade as pork and way too thick. Salt & Pepper Squid: hideously and unbelievably salty. Just felt like whole Saxa salt 500g had been poured over. Color was grey and incredibly tough. UNBELIEVABLE that this pub is busy and people eating. They all must be terrible cooks. We go out to eat so seldom my and I know why.
Samurbanspoon
Poor service, alright-ish food. A bit of confusion over the food, received wrong meal. Wouldn't normally make anything of it, but it was 2 for 1 night and apparently a salad doesn't count as a meal, so we had to pay for two! Anyway, requested the right dish, the chef was nice enough about it, but the girl behind the counter was rude to him when he asked her to update the order on the till and rude to me. Thought it to be a simple mistake until picking up the new meal (oops I mean salad), when it came very clear she was thick as *$#=@ as she made a new query to the chef. Please interview your staff in future!
Dons1977
Terrible Parma! Small dry deep fried poor excuse for meal. My wife had a mysterious plastic object in her mash and only received passing indifference from staff when she bought it to their attention.

It's annoying when the chef or owner writes a fake review quoting the website enmasse

AWESOME. Great night out last Saturday with good coverage of sporting events downstairs and live music afterwards. We headed upstairs for a feed and was pleasantly surprised by the new reno - really upmarket! The menu offers something for all tastes we had the Salmon and the Scotch Fillet of which both were fantastic and reasonably priced. Cold beer and a good selection of wines made for memorable night. Found out every Thursday & Friday is 2 for 1 cook your own steaks, getting a group together for this Friday. Good work on teaching an OLD DOG new tricks.

Old Dog has new tricks. Howl to the moon pub lovers, The D.O.G. is your new local haunt. The revamped Duke Of Gloucester Hotel his back with a fancy new black and white sign out the front, an upscale interior to match and some delicious pub grub on the menu.
Whilst downstairs is the same old stomping ground for regulars, trading on its bread and butter in the form of TAB and projector screen sports viewing, upstairs is a whole new ball game. And just wait until we start talking beer gardens.
The renovated upper level bistro and lounge bar is modern at its best including a black and white marble bar, exposed timber beams and granite pillars. It’s got that Melbourney, Londoney feel that people from each locale tend to reminisce over. The balcony is perfect for sunny arvos and inside the fireplace spells cosy red wine afternoons in winter.
The DOG’s pub grub is some of the best around. Chefs Chris (formerly from Otto's) has created a menu of epic variety including Moroccan and Asian influences, and the open kitchen means you can see them doing their thing.
Dining features include glass display cabinets with prime cuts of meat plus an all you can eat salad and veggie bar. There’s a cook your own grill for the blokes who like to put a steak on the barbie, control their own char, and have a beer while the ladies natter the evening away over a vino or two.
The taster plates are a winner, you can get a combo of eight for $50 and take your pick from duck pancakes, zuchini fritters, garlic prawns, chicken wings, salt and pepper squid, chorizo, potato bravas and crispy pork belly.
Seafood-wise there is oysters and mussels, seafood linguine and salmon. Lightness-wise there are wok and stir fry dishes. The Beef and Guinness Pie with mash is a best-seller, there are steaks cooked to perfection by the chefs and delightfully creamy risotto. Desserts and a kids menu are all there too. This is definitely a family friendly DOG with a new lift for prams coming soon – what a cheeky afternoon catch up spot for mums.
Check out www.thedoghotel.com.au where there’s a deal for everyone. From the $15 burger and beers club for students, $8 CYO (cook your own) rump for tradies and ladies, your second main free on Tuesdays, $12 schnitty with a choice of 8 toppings. Wednesday is trivia night, live music is Saturdays, and there are also a few pool tables around the joint.
Oh, and about that beer garden: a huge reconstruction is about to culminate in a pretty sweet drinking locale. Two garages have been taken out for the privilege. Spread the word, there’s a new DOG in town, and it will have you wagging your pub loving tail. Woof woof!

This bistro is part of The Duke of Gloucester. Great deal with their 2 for 1 deals. Best value around. We just had two great roasted lamb shanks with creamy mash potato. It was incredible value for money and tasted great.
Kevin Ng
Huge improvement on both the deco and food value and Taste since the renovation.
Craig
Nothing like it used to be. Absolutely no atmosphere. I paid $29 for a poorly cooked, luke warm steak. I wanted chips and had to pay more for those. If you have fond memories of the DoG then stay far away. Really disappointing and run down.
Jdog
DELICIOUS!. Dukes bistro has changed hands again sinc the last post. Two for one meals lunch and dinner 7 days, best value in town! You would probably expect cheap , nasty meat but it is beautiful1 $25- for me and my mate 2x 400g newyork with free salad/veg bar. Unbeatable.
