Review Spread Eagle Hotel - Richmond

Brian Cain
I don't usually leave posts but we went on recommendation on a Wednesday (steak night). Absolutely fantastic. Great service, beer & food. Hoping to make it a regular event. Thx to the local McKenna brothers for taking the photo.

My favourite pub in Richmond. Great hospitality, a high quality and regionally diverse wine list and excellent food. Love the homely vibe and friendly atmosphere. My group had a wonderful lunch in the dining room and will be back.

Hi Writing to express my appreciation for all the effort that your staff put into my partner’s 50th birthday party. He had a wonderful evening. The room looked lovely and the food & beverages served were well received. Special thanks to the kitchen staff who did a great job co ordinating the logistics of serving all the food. Our Function Co ordinator and barman were also fantastic. Their attention to detail while being very personable made for a seamlessly run event. Please pass on our thanks to your staff. Much Thanks. Liz

I liked the pub and staff but steak night was really average. Tasted/temperature indicated it had been sitting around for a while before being served. Only $28 with chips and sauce but not worth it

Great little pub, food, service and ambience all 5 our of 5, will be back for sure

Great service with friendly smiles all round. We had calamari on Asian salad for dinner which was delicious. Was also offered to taste the wine before deciding on a glass of pinot. That makes all the difference. Thank you staff.

Had a great family dinner, the steak was perfectly cooked. A delay in serving that was remedied with a free round of drinks was the only hiccup that would have got them 5 stars. But ... the service was great and professional.

Wednesday night - Steak night. Great value but it is best to book to ensure a spot.
Marlin Thomson
Gluten Free chocolate cake was sensational. And I'm normally one to ask for extra gluten please. My steak was cooked to perfection. And the gluten free mung beans fitters was so morish. The sevice was impeccable, waiters new exactly what was on offer and even how the food and drinks tasted. Crazy not to try the place.

We had my wifes birthday party at the Spread Eagle last Saturday arvo. I couldn't recommend the venue any higher. Special thanks to Cloe, Tara & management. A great afternoon & will be using this venue again. Brett Houston

Just finished eating and have left very satisfied. The chicken Parma special was tasty and filling. Others had the pan fried chicken and oysters and were pleasantly surprised with the flavour and freshness. Unfortunately the Med/Well done steak was a disappointment as it was very over cooked and dry. However credit to the staff as they handled the feedback very well and offered us a drink on the house. It was a very busy Sunday night dinner sitting but the staff were efficient and attentive. Will definitely be back thank you

Service excellent, attentive and efficient from the moment we arrived for steak night. The steak was beautifully cooked and the array of mustards and horse radish was delicious. I added the mushroom sauce, a mistake and also tasted my husbands pepper corn also a mistake not the greatest sauces a bit too processed for me and wouldn't buy them again. But the steak and the spread eagle I will absolutely return.

Just amazing! Great food, great price and service. We will be back. They even were great to our 2 dohd with us and got them water.

We went to the Spread Eagle Hotel for New Years dinner and a few drinks before heading to the fireworks at midnight. The place gave off a very welcoming and friendly vibe. The food was very tasty and perfectly cooked/presented. A duo played into the New Year. We really enjoyed ourselves.

We love going the the Spreadie. The Staff are very friendly and look after us exceptionally well. The variety of meals are modern and delicious 😋. The wine selections🥂🍷 are great. Good choices of beer🍻 & Cider on tap. The Sunday Trivia is a great way to spend your time with friends, testing your general knowledge. It's Our Local. 😃😃

Like a lot of places that cook a burger, you Must have a decent bread roll. It mustn't fall apart as soon as you start eating it,Other then that we were pleased with the food and the service.

My last visit was over 20 years ago and although it bought back a lot of memories I was pleased to see that it had been updated and had an incredible atmosphere. Function rooms upstairs looked really nice. The meals were scrumptious and drinks at good prices. Staff were friendly and helpful too. Great old Richmond pub.
Annie Lok
Beautiful old period building. Lovely vibes. Very friendly staff. Great food. Two thumbs up!

My wife and I just wanted a good pub meal for lunch. And that is what we got. The meals where done really well, did not take long to come out. Staff are really welcoming and the beer was nice and cold. GREAT WORK.
Stephen Kerdel

The spready is a great pub. This was one of my last meals out before the lastest lockdown.<br/><br/>I ordered corned beef dinner whicg was cooked so well, and the serving very generous. <br/><br/>The gnocci just melted in my mouth. <br/><br/>The craft beers were good and the pinot noir, well it was absolutely delicious. <br/><br/>I'll be back!<br/><br/>Previous review - December 2019<br/><br/>I haven’t been to the spready for a while. The service is excellent, friendly and efficient.<br/><br/>We ordered some potato cakes and some which were crispy and hot. The rice wine vinegar was a treat.<br/><br/>The gin and sofa was good and my passion fruit sour was a serious lip smacker hahaha whoa!! <br/><br/>The crowd is friendly and this place is definitely worth a visit if your in the area.<br/><br/>November 2016<br/><br/>I went here tonight w my friend after walking past this pub a thousand times. Why?? Hahahaha <br/><br/>We've been missing out! <br/><br/>The service here was spot on! The beer and wine perfect and the food amazing, it really felt like fine dining without the pretence or the price tag. <br/><br/>We both tried different steaks, mine was grass fed 400g man size, and it was cooked to perfection. My friend also tried a 300g steak and it was equally as good. <br/><br/>The potato mash was ok, but the salads were fresh and tasty. <br/><br/>We have discovered another amazing foodie place in Richmond yahoooo hahaha<br/><br/>Def worth a visit! :)

3.5<br/>Called into the Spread Eagle for a quick glass of vino ahead of dinner elsewhere. Lovely old pub which has been tastefully restyled. Despite the modern stylings it still smelled a little “old” though like too many spilled pints. Our Pinot was ok but we expected better having selecting a glass at a higher price point. I hear this place still gets rowdy in the evenings later in the week but it was a mild and meak crowd on a Tuesday night.

My friend works in Richmond and we always meet this way to catch up. I looked at what's around and stumbled across Spread Eagle Hotel. I got there early and felt a little out of place in a suit, as most of the other patrons looked like they would jump into MMA ring for fun. It's really an old school pub with no fancy renovations. We both ended getting a steak and given it was a Wednesday night, it was $18-a bargain given how delicious it was. By the time we left the pub was full of young and old, friends and families. It really is a pub that caters for all and has great food and service. Just shows not everything has to be la di da to keep the masses coming. Great place I would definitely go back to.
Codaholic
Quality locals pub popular amongst The Island faithful. Fireplace, Carlton Draught on tap, sport on TV and an acoustic duo on Friday and Saturday nights... what more could you want? A Bob Hawke lookalike local that’s what!!! <br/><br/>The food is both a combination of a good gastro pub menu combined with solid pub grub options. Codalicipus had the burger and reckoned it was fantastic and “good size”. The chips are all time. Taste like they’re thrice cooked, according to this pretentious foodie! <br/><br/>I had the Veal Schnitzel on mash with green beans and cabbage. I got a side of mushroom sauce. Great quality meal, but three bucks for the size of sauce provided was a bit steep and I wasn’t aware of the cost until the bill came hours and many pints later. <br/><br/>Worth a visit.

Our experience started out fine. It was steak night but I preferred the options of the steak on the regular menu - it was $33 instead of the $18 special. After the waiter took my order, he came back and said he put it through as a steak special but ordered the chat potatoes as a $6 side, instead of the potato that came in the special. He said everything else would be the same but it would work out cheaper. I said I had an entertainment voucher for a free meal, he reassured me the potato wouldn’t be charged as an extra. Then he came back and said the potatoes would be extra... I asked for the regular steak off the menu but they said they couldn’t do it because there was a steak special. So I accepted the additional charge for the potatoes. When the bill came, they charged an unexpected additional $3 for mushroom sauce. The waiter failed to mention this, so when I questioned it, the restaurant manager was very rude and said “it states very clearly on the steak special, sauce is additional”... it was hard for me to get a word into explain, she was saying “I’m sorry you didn’t read the menu properly...” I had to interrupt her and ask if I could talk. I then explained the situation & reiterated I had no menu to read as the waiter made the changes after I had ordered the regular steak. She just kept saying it states clearly on the menu, it was like talking to a brick wall. She was so insulting and displayed very poor listening skills & customer service. It’s mushroom sauce, $3, who cares, but it’s the principle and lack of good customer service that was so aweful.

Traditional cosy pub with friendly service and classic pub menu. My friend went for the Parma and I had the fish of the day which was silver dory. The fish came with broccolini, red quinoa, parsnip purée and buerre Blanc sauce. Generous portion size and really tasty. Wine list was also decent and the complementary bread was a nice touch.

Went there for steak night on Wednesday evening. Food and ambiance were good.<br/>Easy location very near to public transport.<br/>Tried medium steak and with some beers.<br/>Overall a great place, nicely priced not too pricey for the food and ambiance provided :)<br/>

Came for a parmi night and had the Meat Lovers Parmagiana - boy was I surprised at how HUGE it was - but I guess being a pub meal this is often the case. The parma was pretty good (chicken could have been a bit more moist) but this was made up by the oozey melted cheese on-top. I was glad that I opted for only salad on the side as the goliath Parma was overwhelming - but suitable for anyone with a serious appetite. <br/><br/>I didn't drink or really stay too long as I was pretty hungover when I came here (to be honest) but I recall the ambience being pretty cool - your average pub atmosphere.
Hello. Imnikki
Packed on a cold and wet Saturday night, the atmosphere was lively and noisy even, as the footy was on. Service was incredibly charming and attentive, and we were quickly settled in and ready to feast.<br/><br/>Started off with the Mac & Cheese Croquettes. Cheesy on the inside and crispy on the outside, it was a good start to the night. <br/><br/>For mains, we had the Parma, Beef Cheek and the Pork Belly. The Parma was just alright; I would have liked the chicken to be a bit more moist. The Beef Cheek, on the other hand, did not have any issue with moistness; it was succulent and full of flavour. The beef cheek sat on top of a bed of black garlic mash, which had lent a lovely earthy flavour to the dish.<br/><br/>Now, the Pork Belly. It was simply amazing. That crackling is the stuff that dreams are made of. May I also add that this piggy had the perfect ratio of crispy crackling, thin layer of fat beneath the crackling and oh so tender meat. The rhubarb, and kohlrabi and kale remoulade did wonders to cut through the richness of the pork. Could have done without the matcha crumb though. It did nothing to add to the flavour or the texture of the meal.<br/><br/>A delicious meal that left us feeling very full and satisfied indeed.

3.5<br/><br/>We visited Spread Eagle Hotel for a late Sunday lunch and trivia. Of course being a pub, you can’t go wrong with a veal schnitzel and mash. The serving was quite generous (although tbh, we may have slightly over ordered on the snacks). The mash was soft and fluffy, full of flavour. I could have eaten a whole bowl. I also really liked the pickled cabbage that came with it, a bit tangy which freshened up the dish. We ordered Mac and cheese which was okay but not as soft and cheesy as I hoped it would be. All in all, solid pub with good food and service and great atmosphere.

Had my first meal here on a recommendation, and was not dissapointed, Italian specials for $20 with glass of wine. Great tasting food, friendly and professional service. Will definitely be back again.
Quince And Cheese
I haven't had drinks here, but I've grabbed an early dinner. The gnocchi was my dish of choice. It's a bit expensive for a pub meal but pretty hearty and decent flavour. It's a tomato potato base topped with lots of cheese (which makes anything better). Staff were pretty nice as well.
Melb_Belly
Really enjoyed my meal here. <br/><br/>Order the lamb shoulder and it was so tender you could shred it with a fork. Flavours were delicious. <br/><br/>The mint gel, sheep's feta and dates worked really well with the lamb.<br/><br/>The pappadelle came with plenty of cheese. <br/><br/>Nice pub with friendly staff and patrons.

We went for an early Sunday evening dinner and the place was very busy, so best to book.<br/>The dining area is it the rear of the reasonably small pub and it was very loud.<br/>There are different good value daily specials, regular main meals and share plates on offer.<br/>Our meals were great. I had the caramalised pork belly bao buns (a generous serve of 3) and the prawn and chicken spring rolls. The spring rolls were full of meaty filling and wrapped in a light pastry. <br/>Both were fabulous and generous in size. These two share plated were sufficient for me for dinner and in fact, I donated some to my companions.<br/>Others enjoyed the spicy parma with salsa and plenty of salad and chips.<br/>Extra points for a good kids menu, our little diner companion had a little steak and chips.<br/>It was good to be able to pay for your own items at the end.

Awesome beer battered fries, friendly staff and amazing pasta. Really nice local pub. Not one of the chains, so pretty great food. Sorry, no pictures. Sunday is Parma day - $16. Really moist and well cooked.
Speccy
This pub is always pretty packed, particularly on a weds for their $18 steak night (note $3 extra for gravy/sauce - a bit cheeky compared to other steak nights around!) Also, coming with chips should be an option. Upstairs is quite warm in summer. We shared the slow-cooked lamb with grain salad & the gnocchi. Surprise to see the gnocchi pink (but lovely soft pillows GF!) Could have had more pea purée & maybe more greens to break it up. Lamb was good. For $33 I expected it to be bigger..Staff a friendly.
Sam
A bit different from your regular pub. Very dining oriented on the inside with tall cushioned chairs around the tables- but the service was much more laid back and reserved. We ordered the steak and everyone was quite happy with it.
Dam Burger
Was pleasantly surprised by the food here. Ordered the kfc chicken for entree and steak for main. Was very happy with food. Place is basically a pub though so very noisy with drinking crowd on Friday evening. Oh and we had the shared meat platter which was great too. Left very full.
Crazy About My Food
Great pub food! You will never be disappointed and yes, I can vouch for that :). Unless, you go when Tigers are touted to win the premiership in which case it would be hard to step in to this fantasist pub to even get a drink.
Cal
Pretty ordinary vibe, nice setup but nothing spectacular, a huge negative with pints on the expensive end, ~ $11. Pretty nice smoko/outdoor area. On the night, televisions displayed some random canoeing event.

Very bad in<br/>1.Customer Service.. Moody staff members.<br/><br/>2.Horrible Menu- NO VEGAN or veggie main course<br/><br/>3. Absence of Staff members.. They stare at you straightaway.. Needs proper training.<br/><br/>Good in<br/><br/>1.Ambience is excellent<br/><br/>2. Few basic side eats but they can amend KETTLE CHIPS products which pairs well with their drinks<br/><br/>3. Peanuts and Cashewnuts would be nice.<br/><br/>Thank you .. Highly not recommended..
Maidstone Yana
Food was delicious. The portion of kid meal ($12) was bigger than the twice cooked pork belly ($30). But I wouldn't regret having the pork belly because it was cooked to perfection, the succulent moist pork with light crispy crackling. <br/><br/>Enjoyable night
Iris
Lovely food with creative sauce and sides, friendly service, great value. We have thoroughly enjoyed it and certainly would love to come back again!
Sam
Poor experience. Wanted the fish of the day, but it came with chorizo patatas bravas. I don't eat meat so asked for chips/ fries instead but was told nothing on the menu can be changed. I ordered the fettuccine with clams instead, which was really just empty shells and a few tiny clams. Not worth $27.

Love this place!<br/><br/>Wednesday steak night is a must, $18 for a nice big porterhouse (always cooked to perfection), with a nice fresh side salad and scalloped potatoes.<br/><br/>Oh and stone and wood on tap helps too...
Local
Tasty food- a step up from your standard pub but with the regulars on the menu too. Friendly staff and a warm atmosphere, especially in the bar with the open fire going in winter.

Awesome place, great staff and excellent food, steak was cooked to perfection and beef burger was outstanding. will be coming back next week! 👌

My first experience here was great. As this was my second experience here, I was expecting the same level of service I had the first but instead received a horrible experience.  All I can say is the waitress/manager of the establishment was rude and condescending. After receiving our steak, we noticed the two steaks that were supposed to be cooked medium rare seemed to be cooked fully through. We kindly asked the waitress if we could have another steak as it was clearly all brown and there was very little pink. After taking our plates back and agreeing to cook us a new one. The waitress comes back again to confirm they will be cooking us a second one and begins to lecture us on how the steak was cooked correctly. As our Canadian accents show we were not from Australia, she begins to lecture us in a very condescending manner on how restaurants do not cook like the rest of the world and “This is how Australia cooks steak.” She then continues on and says because we were not satisfied by the way the steak was cooked, they will DOUBLE CHARGE us for both steaks because she is now caught in the middle between the chefs being angry that they need to fix the problem and us being unsatisfied with our food. She did not inform us this when she took back the steak to remake a new one. Instead, we felt cornered into a situation where we had no other choice but to be double charged for being unsatisfied with the food. Being completely shocked and speechless at the way she was handling he situation, she continued on by talking to us as if we were children and saying “Do you understand what I’m saying? Do you get it? I’m going to double charge you for the steak? Do you understand what I’m saying?” In the end, after debating with this waitress, she agreed not to double charge us. She apologized, however continued to argue and try and prove to us on how the steak was cooked the first time. What was suppose to be a happy send off for a dear friend of mine and to have one lasting memory of Australia for her, turned out to be a nightmare and a very uncomfortable dinner.   <br/><br/>To the waitress that served us, as individuals who have and are in the hospitality industry we understand the pressures that may come. Being in the industry, you must be equipped to handle unsatisfied customers. No one is perfect and you cannot tell me that your chef’s food has never received a complaint or an unsatisfied customer. Our silence when asked “Do you understand what I’m saying” twice in a condescending matter was not ignorance, it was shocked from the lack of respect and kindness we were subject to. This is the worse service I’ve ever experience in a restaurant. An apology is not an apology if you are going to follow up with “But”. If you truly want to apologize, then apologize and stop trying to continue to prove you are right. Hope your future customers will not be subject to the very unpleasant experience we had today.

Great local. Literally 2 min walk from our place.<br/>Food is always good, and they have some great locals night specials also.<br/>The menu is mixed up regularly so you aren't forever choosing off the same list.<br/>We shared the Slow Cooked 24 Brisket platter last night, was a huge serve along with the condiments that came along with it (corn tortillas, avo salsa, salad, Jack Daniels BBQ sauce and beer battered chips) for $42 you can't go wrong! Can't wait to have it again!

We booked a private dining room upstairs for a friday lunch. Meals were overall good. While I loved my gnocchi, it seemed there were a few hits and a few misses around the table. Service was slow & it was literally too long between drinks with nobody checking in on us between food.
Ricco
Here for Mother's Day. Cold wet day outside, warm and inviting inside. Table booked down stairs right in the thick of it. The noise adds to the atmosphere. Good quality pub meals excellent selection. Staff are friendly and attentive. Great place in a very competitive market.
JS
Good pub food. Good vibe. Good open fire. Good people. Good all over. Good transport at the door. Nothing spectacular, just good, good and good.
Denny Patron
Great food, great pub! Lots of tasty little small plates that regularly change, potato cakes are brilliant. Parma’s and steaks spot on. Great staff as well.
Lexie
Their steak nights used to be fantastic but the quality seems to have gone down a bit.<br/>Last time we went the steak was so tough and dry and the sides were pretty average.
Nick The Greek
Good venue to come for a drink before exploring the surrounding dining options. Old style pub , better dining options in the street/s around it.
David Liao
A well know Richmond establishment with open fire place and cosy fit out. My favourite is the porterhouse steak. Perfect on winter afternoon with a pot of mountain goat beer.
Tanner79
Been coming here for years and I'm sorry to say that the 'new menu' (as described by our waitress) is a rip off! I regularly order the veal schnitzel and now it's about half the size it used to be! Not sure if other items have also been chopped in half but needless to say I won't be heading back for dinner ...only a beer!
Bargirl
Was pleasantly surprised on Friday night by how decent the food is. From the music playing and the crappy drinks selection you wouldn't expect much but the food was really nice. The steak I had was cooked just right and we appreciated the mustard bar they have set up. The staff were friendly and efficient.<br/>If they increased their beer selection to include more than 1 porter or stout then I'd be here every week...even the mountain goat surefoot stout would do!
ItsTrueFatKidsLoveFood
Definitely one of the best pub feeds in the area. Food here is consistently good. The parma and steak are really good. Beer selection is ok. Shows the footy which is another plus.

We we're visiting for the long weekend from Adelaide and stumbled across this pub. We had just popped in for a drink on a Sunday evening., a table came free and we decided to stay for dinner.<br/>In our group of 6, 3  including myself had the gnocchi with mushrooms. It was so delicious. One had the chicken parmmy, which was well received. Another had the crumbed pork cutlets which I tried and also loved. I would definitely order that next time and the last person had the chicken ravioli which had the most amazing rose sauce. <br/>I have a sweet tooth but don't normally order desert but I couldn't resist the chocolate fondant pudding with peanut butter ice cream and salted caramel sauce. OMG my dessert of the year so far. <br/>Great little pub on outskirts of CBD. Ended up dancing the night away there too.
Tabbed_browsing
Rude staff, good food though.
Andy
As a local pub it is exactly that, great a few beers with the lads, casual cerb side Parma in summer and more fitting wintry dinner with the olds on a Saturday night with the footy on the TV. Can happily say every time I go am a happy customer. Table service in the dining room can be a bit hit and miss, and on more than a few occasions a little whirlwind like, but I'd put that down to the fact that the place is pumping every night! Looking forward to trying out the new Italian night soon.
Madison
The steak and service tonight made me sign up for urban spoon, by the looks of things it's already received the pat on the back it deserves but absolutely could not recommend more. Definitely be coming back soon!

There was a time when on a Sunday night you could get a very good classic chicken parmigiana for $12 at the Spready in Richmond! These days that great deal that lasted most of my first five years in Melbourne is sadly gone. The Spread Eagle Hotel has been around long before I arrived though and the locals still love it!
Parma Daze
Before long, three parmas were trotted out of the kitchen, which would be fantastic, If we hadn’t ordered eight of them. After a ten minute wait another two parmas arrived, at this point courtesy went out the window and those of us who got the first round tucked in, leaving the three reviewers who had yet to recieve their food very sullen as we ate, after another twenty minute wait their food arrived and we all breathed a sigh of relief.
Xjuzjuzjuzx
I did enjoy my time at the Spready. The staff are down to earth and friendly, the cheap parma was definitely edible, and the atmosphere is perfect for people coming together and chatting over a few beers. I'd like to come back and try their regular $19 chicken parma, which I hear is of a higher quality to the Parma Fest specimens...
Big Eyes For A Big Tummy
The food is great. The steak on steak night is awesome and great value. What made it most enjoyable was that the service here was genuine, friendly and attentive - what a lot of Melbourne casual restaurants are missing.
Troy Danger
Food-wise I would recommend the veal schnitzel. 10/10.
Mezza152
Great night, thanks all.. Went to a Christmas function upstairs on Friday night- and had a great time. Staff were fabulous- very accommodating with allergies and intolerances (options provided still numerous and delicious), drink service prompt and our orders were memorised pretty quickly. Dinner was fantastic- plentiful, tasty and well presented. Pity that dinner wasn't served until approx. 9ish for a function that started at 6:30pm, lots of hungry punters, found out later that this was in part due to the party before finishing 15 mins before ours was due to start...
Augustus Gloop
This is a cool classy pub! The food was lush and the service was great! Two men looked after us and they were entertaining yet helpful. Definitely deserved a love but there is only a like button.. #Urbanspoonfaults

Delicious. Last night I had dinner at the Spready with some friends. We regularly come here for drinks and occasionally have dinner here but this was the first time we had tried the new menu. We were blown away! The lamb shoulder pasta in particular was amazing! Went great with the Stone & Wood Pacific Ale which we all are hooked on in this weather. The service is consistently great; attentive without being annoying. They're always accommodating (we changed our reservation twice!) and it's just an all-round great place. We will certainly be having dinner here more often!!
Sfk11
Amazing!. Upon entry, I was served by a lovely gentleman with glasses named Justin at the bar. then proceeded to the dining room where a tall handsome man named Harrison was our waiter! He had a great knowledge of the whole menu and took out order with patience! <br/>The food was amazing we had the steak and the fish pie! Definitely can't wait to come back to see that spunky waiter !<br/>Atmosphere 10/10<br/>Food 10/10<br/>Drinks list 10/10 <br/>10/10 would come again
Jess_e88
Meh. Porterhouse was overdone and kipfler potato hash thing on the side was barely warm. Wouldn't go again.
Katrina Bowe
I had the veal schnitzel with mash and green beans & husband had the cassoulet of duck and pork belly with chorizo and beans. To be honest we either caught chef on a super busy Saturday or they were still recovering/celebrating the shock Richmond win in the footy, because I'm still not sure what all the fuss is about. Schnitzel was slightly soggy being oil-logged; and husband wondered if he was the only person that night to have ordered the cassoulet (oh wait no, someone behind you has ordered it too honey!)... the meat was a tad overdone. We waited next to no time however and the waiter was friendly and efficient, so perhaps they are making a few tweaks trying to address the gripes about lengthy waiting times (that I browsed here). <br/>Seeings as this is basically our 'local' now, we will be back at some point to give it another go. Maybe we'll stick to the much lauded steak night instead
Netty
Enjoyed a fabulous meal there last night. The eye fillet was cooked to perfection and the side order of chips were crispy and yum! Others enjoyed the lamb shanks and the Parma. Service was tip top. Highly recommend. This pub makes great food and doesn't take itself too seriously.. Great relaxed atmoshere, no fuss.

Great pub food. We decided to try the Spread Eagle on the news that the chef had migrated from the Kingston: "what a falling off was there! " Certainly the magical steaks from the Kingston have transferred to the Spread Eagle and the steak night special makes them probably the best value and quality around. The rest of the menu is excellent. <br/><br/>I've taken to having the hazelnut crumbed pork cutlet with smashed potato, bacon, green beans and braised red cabbage. The cutlet is large thick and tender. We recently dined at Noir, which is a favourite of ours, where I had a pork loin, which was by comparison small and tough and twice the price. The same can be said of the fish dishes which stand up to the standard at Noir particularly well. Last night's parma was adjudged one of the best ever.<br/><br/>The pub is extremely popular, busy and raucous, rather like a bacchanalian revel with young women bearing huge platters of food, wine and beer around the room to be consumed by the revellers.<br/><br/>The service is attentive and quick and the staff are very considerate of the pusher for our grandson, who slept unconcerned through whole meal.<br/><br/>Wednesday night is steak night and at $16 the steaks are fantastic value. We decided to try Thursday night to beat the crowds but Thursday night is pretty popular as well and justifiably so. This is a great pub with great food.

Great parma. One of the best pub parmas in richmond. service is hit and miss though
Kris
Great atmosphere, tasty food. I'm a regular with a group of friends, and we've always enjoyed our meals. Generous portion sizes and a menu that changes with the seasons keeps us returning.<br/><br/>Depending on how busy it is, the service can sometimes be slow, but is always friendly, and they're always happy to accommodate our ever changing group size.
Stephen
This place is the best pub in Richmond! <br/>Was there on a Thursday night and the two fellas Harrison and Justin had the perfect mix of knowing when to look after the table and when to leave us alone! The food is awesome and a great arrange of beers! The only downside was the staff recommendation of Jim Barry Cover Drive, decent wine just not worth the price tag they slapped on it<br/><br/>Overall 8.5/10<br/><br/>Would visit again but would avoid the wine menu
Ed
Food is ok, but.... Very sloooww....<br/>it was a Monday night, we were there at 6:30, early Monday night not busy at all, we sat there for 40 mins waiting for the food, meanwhile no bread for us. all other tables got their bread even while they were still reading their menu. it wouldn't make me to give you a hate, but all the little things count.

Great food, great staff. I came in with my husband and friends on a Tuesday night and we were all extremely delighted with the food. The lamb shoulder and Eye Fillet is a winner! This classic pub has great atmosphere and great staff, if you get the chance ask for a girl called Laura or Lauren (cant quite remember) to be your waitress, she's on the ball!

Lunch today with 4 friends. All meals were great and full of flavor. Nice place and good menu. Wouldn't hesitate for business lunches as well.

Great place for a nice dinner. Went in last night for dinner and it was a great experience. Great service, always ensuring everything is good. Food was quite delicious, had a few platters to share and while portions were slightly smaller than expected, it tasted great and the sides accompanied it well. Nice atmosphere and will definitely come back in the future.

Went with a group of friends after work. Good pub for a beer and nice food

Great steak!. Popped by for lunch recently sitting in the dinning room which feels homely on the very comfortable chairs gazing through the window watching the world go by. Spoiled myself with Eye fillet for lunch, Probably the biggest one I have ever had, that was also a perfect cylinder shape. Included on the plate was roasted truss tomato and asparagus, fresh and crisp onion rings gave the dish that little crunch. Everything was plated simply as the ingredients spoke for them selves. It was Tempting not to ask for mash instead however.<br/><br/>Lunch also seems to include a number of cheaper options for those on the go.<br/>Plan to return.

$14 steak night is great value. My steak was a little under seasoned but it was still good. Cooked to order as well unlike the Kingston that gives you 2 options only.

One of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time! I have fructose intolerance and most establishments refuse to cater to my needs, however Spread Eagle went above and beyond with a pre-arranged list of suitable options and took my needs seriously which left me feeling at ease. Better still, the food was delicious and the staff very attentive and friendly. I will be back and would certainly recommend to anyone with specific dietary requirements! Thank-you to the staff!!!

Revamped menu = awesome.. As a Richmond local I've enjoyed plenty quiet beers inside the Spread Eagle over the years but never really 'loved' the food - until recently.<br/>The menu, now with the revamped menu and new chef has completely turned this place around.<br/>Between 3 of us we shared 4 sharing plates and a side of kipfler potatoes and everything was wonderful. At $12 a sharing plate, the portions are generous and the food is very tasty. We had the terrine, mini chicken pies and calamari salad and it was all very enjoyable.<br/><br/>It really was a delightful surprise, and I'll be back. Also worth noting that The Spread Eagle is one of a very few select hotels with Richmond Lager on tap for a short time only too.

Friendly amusing staff, perfect portioned food. The agnolotti was amazing!!

Great food! The lamb rump with carrot purée, Harissa beans and goats curd was delicious and very well priced. Impressed.

Accolades to new chef. What a treat !!...my 2 recent visits to the Spread Eagle were a joy. Went one week and just had to go back !<br/>New chef and a delicious series of offerings-- don't miss the open mushroom ravioli ...and my medium rare steak was the best for years.<br/> An interesting short list of tempting deserts is there for the sweet tooth still with capacity-- understand the menu changes with the seasons so am looking forward to a tempting spring and summer<br/> Elifabs

Best Veal Schnitzel EVER!!. 2 pieces of Schnitzel, mash and coleslaw<br/><br/>OMG - The most amazing Schnitzel I have ever had in a pub or Restaurant! I cannot wait to try more of the new Speady menu! <br/><br/>"EXCITED"!!!<br/><br/><br/>-----22 Aug, 2013-----<br/><br/>New chef ??. They must have a new chef here as the food is amazing - its taken a few years but they have finally got it!!<br/><br/>no more pre cooked rubber steaks!<br/><br/>no more frozen parmas!
Em
Baaaaaaad steak.. Have eaten parmas here before and they've been exceptional, but the steak I had on Sunday was terrible. I don't know whether it was a bad cut of meat or just terribly overcooked, but it wasn't good, and neither was my boyfriend's. For $25, I expect not to have to chew each piece for five minutes. The garlic sauce was lovely, though.

Richmond pub, nothing more nothing less. Had a lunch off between three Richmond pubs.<br/>Today, the spread eagle, a funny place, the bar man was the beer nazi aka soup nazi but in a nice way, a real salt of the earth.<br/>He had a table of old timers discussing the trivia section of the paper and to my surprise from their conversations, we're retired university academics and technical school teachers.<br/>For lunch it was quiet, seating a little awkward, cold beer, excellent no mucking about. Steak was well priced and for a low priced steak, one got a steak on par loaded with chips etcetc. So an w average steak, but no pretentious here, you get what you pay for, and what I got is what the y advertised and what was perfect for a mid week mid winters quick lunch.<br/>Well done, but don't expect more.

Mediocre service even for a pub. Went for $14 Parma night. Not expecting 5 star service at a pub, but service was still poor. We were seated at the end of a row of tables, and our table was not wiped down for us though it had some drink stains. (Later a large group occupied the tables beside us and had theirs wiped down). <br/><br/>Wife's beverage was filled 3/4 of the way (while mine was filled to the top). <br/><br/>Despite the bar server/waiter repeating my order AND pointing at it in the menu, I still got the wrong Parma (like the reviewer below). Big portions and Parma tasted okay, but fries/mash potatoes were bland and not seasoned.

Good atmosphere. Massive chicken parma, sweet deal for $14! Wouldn't have the chicken fajitas again though...

Parma Fail. The Sunday Parma Fest has always been excellent at the Spready. Proper thick chicken breast parma's. I haven't been for a while, and sadly, they're now using cheap, thin chicken schnitzels instead. Also, they've changed the choice of toppings, which was exciting, until I couldn't find a hint of basil or tomato on my Caprese version. Very disappointing. Avoid until they return to their previous high standard.

One of my favourite pubs in Richmond, used to be my local a few years ago. Service is always friendly and the beer cold. The food is better than average pub fare and it's a great place for a few drinks on Sunday afternoon, particularly if you enjoy pub trivia. I'll be back again soon.

Can't Fault The Place.. Sunday trivia afternoon: A great atmosphere. A selection of chicken parma dishes for $14, but we opted for the chicken fajitas, having been to Mexico and eaten this dish many times I could not tell the difference between Richmond and Isla Cozumel. $24 buys you fajitas for two and a bottle of Corona each. Lost the quiz but loved the cheerful, attentive service. The 'Spready', as they call it, has the atmosphere of a local pub but we were welcomed by regulars and staff alike. This was my first visit to the Spread Eagle, but certainly won't be my last. 9/10

Worst Parma Ever. Maybe i got the chef on a bad night, or the staff were too spaced out and entered the wrong item or maybe because it was a $14 special, but this would have to be on par with worst parma i have ever had. Not sure what the other reviewers classified as good food but it didn't start well when i ordered the Caprese Parma with chips and veg- what came out was an original parma with cold chips and limp salad. No basil, no boconcini. Chicken was stale and tough, had better nuggets from McDonalds. Didn't bother asking for a new one as had to wait 30min for the 1st one and was too hungry to wait another 30. My friend also ordered the Chilli Con Carne Parma and also received an Original with chips and veg.

Friendly local hotel. Always enjoy a beer here in the sun

Spready Sunday sippers :). Love heading to the spready for sunday sippers and never disappointed with the parma - a local that will always stay true to itself

Booked upstairs for large client dinner. Excellent food. Terrible service. Wait staff were unconcerned and were repeatedly asked to service the room.

Loving My New Local "The Spready". Having just moved to Richmond, I had heard great things about the "Spready" from the locals, and it didn't disappoint. Old pub look on the outside - but lovely dining area inside. Great atmosphere and excellent food. The chicken curry was totes delish, as was the fish of the day. The guy behind the bar was friendly, staff attentive, food and drinks well priced - I will be going back again and again and ..........!

The interior is lovely, the wine was delicious but can someone please explain to me why we paid $20 for parmas that weren't even real chicken? For that kind of money I expect more than deep fried processed meat. Others at our table ordered grilled calamari, again deep fried.

Good Pub Grub. Quite possible one of the best pubs in Richmond in my opinion. Decent price to value ratio on the food menu, good range of beers at the bar and decent wine list. I had the steak lunch deal which was decent, my wife and her friend both had pork belly which they really enjoyed. Smallish front bar with a dining room out the back, with the island bar in between - not a poki machine in sight too. Will definitely be visiting again 4.5 out of 5.

Best Parmas ever!. We dinned here last night, made a booking for 4 people via the website. <br/>My husband and i have dined here before but our friends hadn't and they were happy we chose the spread eagle! we all orded the parmas, meat lovers, hawiian, and mexicana's. All meals came out looking fresh and LARGE! the chicken was fantastic and the toppings are awesome! and fresh salad! the staff are also very attentive in drink service, and give service with a smile!<br/>Can't wait to go back!

Beautiful food! Very fresh ingredients and a friendly, fun atmosphere for a Saturday night! Stayed there for a good 4 hours!

Steak and parma review. Ive had both the steak and parma at spread eagle in the last few weeks.<br/>1. i had the parma on a fri night. it was delicious, one of the best ive had. the chicken fillet is very good. very generous portion sizes and servings of chips and salad. above all the chicken fillet was excellent quality, juicy and cooked to perfection. <br/><br/>2. ive also had the wednesday steak ($14 deal on wednesday). the steak was cooked very well and had a delicious smokey/grilled taste. served with chips and salad or mash and veggies. beware that you may need to book before turning up for the wednesday steak deal.

Friday night dinner here, food was very good-Chicken Parma and Sheppherds pie-very fast service-good wine selection by the glass-All in all a pleasant dining experience! Nice pub that does all the classics-We will be back! Recommend!!

Good Food. I was recently at the spready having a beer in the afternoon (not for the first time) with a mate when we decided to stay for dinner. I've had parmas and steaks there but i decided to go for a veal shank and it was amazing. I felt compelled to write this because I reckon there is a lot of people like me who would just stick to steaks and parmas but even just once, go for something off the menu cause there are some crackers on there. My mate had a beef and guinness pie and said it was great.<br/>Good job spready
Anna
Best Parma. Can you beat their Parma? I've tried and I can't! Nice pub, great staff, good food!
Food Lover
Love this pub. One of the few that don't have a dodgy gaming room or dirty TAB. The foods great. They have 2 open fires going on cold days. The staff are friendly and the bar has a great vibe.
Andy
Great Parmas!. If you happen to grace the Spready with your presence on a Sunday, Monday on Tuesday - you will be fortunate enough to have a $12 parma.<br/>These are some of the best in Richmond, and the bar staff are great too!
Melbfoodie
Fantastic value and choice. Went here last Friday afternoon. I had the prawn/chili linguine. 5 or 6 good sized prawns served with fresh chilli .<br/><br/>Good garlic bread for starters. <br/><br/>My dining partners had a huge chicken parma ($14) served with chips and salad (standard fare) and a good sized pizza ($10) with ham, cheese, pineapple, peppers which tasted fresh. I never eat pizza when I go out but I would happily order the pizza from this place next time. <br/><br/>Massive menu with plenty of choice, good selection of beer and cider (CUB, Fat Yak, Bulmers) and wine. <br/><br/>Comfortable dining room with good outlook. <br/><br/>The price was amazing, the quality and servings size of the food above average. Very happy to recommend this place and I'm looking forward to returning (this week I think!)

Some of the best Parmas in Melbourne - and for $12 on a Sunday they are the best value as well. Good pub in general
Old Gregg
Good food good service. Had the parpadelle with beef ragu - pasta was el dente, ragu was rich and full of flavours. Couldn't fault the friendly service, pricing was reasonable. Another great Richmond pub. Try the Kingston as well - stay away from the Prince Alfred.
DL
Bar and wait staff are ridiculously good looking and provide some of the best service this side of the river.

Risotto is divine here. Nice for Friday night drinks!

I heart the Spready! Awesome vibe, great food and the trivia on Sundays is the best

Great $14 steaks on steak night (good quality porterhouse) but be ready to be ushered out hastily if you plan to stay longer than the 'set' meal time allowed. They have two seating times, 6.30pm and 8.00pm. We were reminded about this 3 times before actually getting our meals (plus on the phone when we made a reservation). Great food but uptight and frenzied staff really take the shine off an otherwise comfy pub to eat. It was 7.50pm and we wanted to order one dessert. The waitress said no and couldn't wait to give us our bills to meet her 8pm seating time. By the time she took our card it was 8.05pm by which stage we could have ordered an eaten a piece of cake! All staff were on the same stress out. Won't go back again. Steak however was awesome.

Just moved to the area and have found this pub to be a gem. Service was friendly, food was simple but of a good quality. Perfect for a quick midweek meal and drink.

Thumbs up!. This pub is great for dinner and drinks. The meals are reasonably priced and the food is great. Parma night is an obvious favorite.

Great dinner. Luckily got the only not reserved table and enjoyed drinks and dinner, reasonable pricing, very good service. Fireplace was cosy too. Loved the parma

Great little local pub. I've just recently moved to Richmond but I've been to The Spready around 5 times already. It is such a gorgeous little local pub...great food (great parmas and the antipasto platter is awesome), fun staff and a really welcoming atmosphere. I thought twice about recommending it because I don't want to ruin its local feel, but then again all good things should be shared!!!

TOTAL RIPE OFF SHOCKING SERVICE. This place has been really good before, but it has now changed to cheap, cut portions restaurant. The lamb shanks (please note the pleural in lamb shanks) has been cut in size to one lamb shank so has half the mnu but of course no change in the price! we were regular weekly customers, and when we got presented our half portion meal we queried it with the manager saying a week ago we has been served double that. he told us that the chief was now serving lamb shank from a higher quality area of the shank and that is why he had cut potions. i explained that i could eat this in one mouth full, but still no apology. instead 20 minutes after all the food had turned cold he bought out an extra shank! when asking for a discount on the meal he continued to showed possibly the worse customer service skills i ever seen but refusing to acknowledge any possible fault. pls avoid the spread eagle - it is now overpriced, poorly managed waste of time!
