Review Hunky Dory - Richmond

Food hit the spot, service at lunch time on Monday 18 July was excellent - the waitress recommended we get small chips rather than medium and she was right.

This place is really good. You can have seafood or whatever you want, but this time I avoided seafood and had a burger, chips and a sugar free coke. The service was great, the staff were great, I've eaten here before and I'll eat here again.

Enjoyed our grilled seafood, chips and salad. Fresh grilled barramundi was so good. We had friendly and helpful service.

Good service. Food came out quick. Cooked well, but fish portions were a bit small.

Really impressed by how good the fish and chips were here. Great value, large serving and really tasty. The battered fish didn't taste too oily, chips had the right amount of salt and crunch to it and calamari rings had the perfect amount of batter. Looking forward to coming back to try the other items on the menu.

I've never had a bad experience with Hunky Dory, and Richmond was no disappointment either. Great food and value for money. Excellent customer service. Would recommend

This is the best fish and chip shop in Richmond!! Huge servings, super fresh fish and tasty salads. Always busy, as they are really good. Food isn’t greasy, have never been disappointed. Good amount of dining tables inside, which are usually full. Nice place also for outdoor casual street dining. Highly recommended.🐟

THREE times I have gone to Hunky Dory Richmond in the evening (twice prior to Covid19), and been told that they are closed & no longer taking orders. I checked the hours posted on their website before bothering the last time, but same thing. I get that there's a disclaimer that their hours may differ or change, but come on, if you always close early, adjust your times so people don't waste theirs.<br/><br/>I then tried to order for delivery (through Menulog) at another date and time. Despite living less than 1km away from the Richmond store, I was only able to order from the South Yarra store (this wasn't even close to their supposed closing time, so nothing to do with that). This resulted in the higher than claimed delivery fee, which is on top of the already elevated prices on their take away menu. (I've never seen that - take-away is normally cheaper than dine-in. Higher prices make sense when factoring in delivery, but not when there's a delivery fee added on to that afterwards as well. That's double dipping people!) For an item that is $15 on their take-away menu, the resulting price was around $23!!!!! That's a mark up of over 46%, and a complete rip off.<br/><br/>So basically, their fish & chips might be nice, but they're always closing early & don't seem to give a $*!@ if that's inconvenient, and if you want to avoid the frustration of going there & finding that they won't serve you cos the staff want to go home, you'll be robbed blind.

Went in for takeaway two lunch deals. Asked for one with chips and another with rice but both came with chips. Disappointed. Cashier initially overcharged us $34 then $31. After that the right price but she did not apologise or recheck our order. Fish was good and packed well but service was not welcoming at all.

Hunky Dory is the perfect place for a large and reasonably priced fish and chip meal. The fish and chips were beautifully crispy and perfectly cooked and the salad was really fresh. Serving sizes are huge and the ambience was really lovely. Highly recommend!

Went here before seeing Joan Jett at the Corner Hotel. This is one of the best fish and chip shops I've been to. Me and my friend got "The Bay" and the Fish, Chips, Potato Cake and Calamari Rings were crisp to perfection, The service was also fast and efficient. Thank you, I will definitely come back.

I’m not a big fan of fish and chips but this place has got me on my toes! The atmosphere was great, the food was great, the service was great and everything was just great overall. Would definitely come here again!

This was my first time to the Richmond store, and it had been a while since the last hunky Dory meal. I ordered the fried flake pack which was a little under whelming. The fish was a little dry and the Greek salad a little average. On the positive side it was a large portion and the staff were friendly.

I am never let down when I visit Hunky Dory. <br/>There are so many great options on the menu and the food is fresh and filling. <br/>I recently tried the Grilled Seafood & Salad and loved it. This meal includes grilled fish (of your choosing), calamari and prawns with a salad of your choice (I went for the Greek salad). I thought this was great as you get three types of seafood with a lovely salad. <br/>The sweet potato wedges are awesome - crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. <br/>I would highly recommend visiting Hunky Dory.

Got a pack with a ....work friend....we all know how that will end after we finish working there. Anyway....food was good. We had takeaway but I went to pick it up. Good service, made fresh, restaurant had a nice atmosphere and doesnt have that 'Cheap Takeaway Look'.<br/><br/>Oh and Chips were crispy and hot. Potato cake was a good size. Nice Tartare sauce and a fresh lemon.<br/><br/>Will return to to eat in and try one of their burgers

This is more of a sit down restaurant that your typical fish and chippery. It’s a pleasant place to eat a meal too. Standard fish and chip type food, but also a lot of fresh salad options. Prices are a little higher than a typical take out joint.

Hunky Dory elevates the typical fish ‘n’ chips shop. We ate here before the State of Origin game at the ‘G’. The place was buzzing with diners. Given you order from the counter, service of food was pretty quick and staff were friendly and attentive to diners. The calamari was tender and the fish (The Hunky Dory) was fresh. Overall we had a nice feed before the game. 😎👍🏼

Disclaimer: I got my food delivered from here, having had late night fish and chip cravings so I can’t tell you much about the interior, atmosphere of the restaurant, the service and all that jazz. <br/><br/>I however had the wonderful opportunity of tasting their food. I wasn’t expecting much, I was just looking for some good grease but what I got exceeded my expectations. <br/><br/>I ordered the fish and chip pack for 2, the panko fish burger and the grilled fish wrap. I thoroughly enjoyed all dishes. <br/><br/>With all the dishes you get a really good amount of food: the fish and chip pack is more than sufficient for two people, one grilled fish wrap will be a sufficient meal and the burger was so big and I didn’t even end up finishing all dishes between three people. <br/><br/>All dishes are delicious. I cannot fault the flavour and texture of any:<br/><br/>-The fish and chip pack very well seasoned and so perfectly crispy. The fish was so fresh and there was a perfect balance between the batter coating and the fish. It wasn’t like your typical type of fish. It was meaty, wholesome, flaky yet still succulent. <br/><br/>-The burger had a massive piece of fish. Usually I would complain about not getting enough meaty substance in my burger, but there was a generous portion of meat in this one. All the components so well balanced and made to perfection. <br/><br/>-The fish wrap was my favourite thing I ordered. I have one perfect word for it: YUM exclamation mark. Again, good balance of ingredients which were all made to perfection. Yum yum yum the coleslaw was to die for. I wish I had a whole tub of it I could just eat. The coleslaw had some herb that just drew out all the flavours so wonderfully. I would get to the bottom of most wraps and have to eat a lot of breading with tiny amounts of other ingredients but with this wrap, there was still copious amounts of fish, slaw and all that good good. <br/> <br/>The price is alright, it’s not a hefty amount that you’re forking out but it is more than you’d expect to pay for fish and chips. It really is a lot easier to go to your local fish and chiperie that isn’t as gourmet and pay a lot less. In my opinion, it was worth the extra bucks though. I’m very happy I came across this place and will definitely come back with friends. This place has truly blessed my tastebuds.

Post gym ritual we picked up some fish each takeaway as well as a serve of salad and calamari to share. Fresh, tasty and healthy makes it an absolute winner in my book even though it is on the expensive side for fish and chips. Yesterday’s salmon piece was huge which was a plus after training

A decent place to have fish and chips. Though on the last occassion I tried their grilled fish burger and chips instead. The fish were reasonably good but the rest of the burger was just okay. The chips were chunky and short-ish, served in decent amount. They were good though not great. All and all, I think I'll stick to their fish and chips next time.

Came across this place, the food was fresh and delicious. The fish and chips tasted some what healthy and it was even better because we got to eat it under the sun 👌

Wandered around Richmond with two friends before the ariana grande concert and we decided on this place. I ordered the grilled fish of the day pack and thought the food was quite delicious and filling. My friends were also quite happy with their purchase, except one of my friends had to wait a while for her potato cake due to some miscommunications about her order. Also, it was a bit dissappointing there was no family pack for us to all share. However, still a good experience aside from the minor hiccup.

I had the most amazing experience here! Pleasantly welcomed by Dina, the store manager, who made my family's night out one to remember. The staff here are wonderful and attentive, Dina was great making sure we got a table and made sure everything was wonderful! Even gave us her favourite sauce on the house and we loved it! Lamb skewers great if you enjoy a fatty gristly lamb skewer. I found it tough and chewy and dry. <br/><br/>The chips seem to be the last of the barrel, being very small in size and requiring fork to eat without making a mess.<br/><br/>One of my partners calamari rings still had the membrane on it and tasted funny, so he left that one. <br/><br/>In my 10 years of eating at hunky-dory, this was by far the worst experience I’ve ever had. Quality food was lacking significantly compared to Port Melbourne<br/><br/>Honestly, regretted my decision to eat here before the football.

Love, love, LOVE Hunky Dory! I usually eat here once a week. My go to is the grilled calamari with kale/broccoli/spinach salad and sweet potato wedges. Great feed to share!

Best place for fish and chips. My all time favorites are HD grilled burger, Calamari Fish and Chips. Very healthy and delicious sea food. This place has good outdoor seating. Enjoying food under the sun is fun and refreshing.

May favourite place for fish and chips. I love the grilled seafood here with some garden salad, delicious and nutritious. The price is also very reasonable.

Came here with a friend and we ordered the pack for two. There was two fried dim sim, two calamari rings, two fish, chips and two potato cakes. The fried calamari were really fresh as well as the fish. Definitely worth the price for the amount of food you get.

Food was yum! Had the grilled seafood and fries. The grilled calamari was a tad bit over cooked but the flavours of everything was spot on. Fries were crispy. Food took a while to get to my table.

Stock standard as the other Hunky's around -good place for fish + salad + chips/rice that are good value. The calamari are always on my list of things to eat as are the fish options that come with a variety of sauces.

Very happy with the quality of food - always tasty and reasonably warm. Disappointed that it doesn't do UberEats anymore - it was our weekly tradition!!

A decent feed, healthy, fresh and relatively affordable. A regular lunch time spot and dinner hang out. Personal favourite is the grilled Salmon pack with brown rice and greek salad. Simple and for around 20 bux.

My first time at Hunky Dory and the whole experience was just rather ordinary I'm afraid. They were playing quite loud and irritating top 40 music (okay, that could be the drawcard for some people but it grated on me) and the chairs and tables constantly squeal against the polished concrete floors. When it came to the food, the chips were cooked well - were quite crisp - but were strangely lacking in flavour so that even adding quite a bit more salt left them a bit bland. The fish in my wrap was cooked just enough and the slaw was great with lots of dill, but I think they need to offer a fried fish wrap version to give it more oomph. My husband got battered flake and commented that the batter was weirdly soft, not at all crisp like you'd expect from something that's so clearly deep fried. The only saving grace was that the staff are quite friendly so I can't fault that side of things, but I won't be rushing back for the food or the ambience.

Hunky Dory is by far my favourite fish and chip shop in Melbourne. The food is always so fresh and unlike most fish and chip shops; Hunky Dory is a nice pleasant place to dine in. The stores are well decorated and styled and always clean. Staff are friendly too. Have never had a bad experience.

We've always love the grilled fish from hunky dory, but we've never been to the Richmond branch until today. Nice day to be seated outside lunching alfresco style. Ordered the Italian grilled fish with chips and salad. Salad was fresh and fish was grilled till nice and soft. Fish was a tad saltier than the other branches, but still yummy. Service was good too. Would recommend.

Was going back and forth on getting a burg or just getting some fish and chips. I guess my first burger of the year just had to wait.<br/><br/>On order: a coupled up and salt & pepper calamari with the broccoli, kale, and spinach salad.<br/><br/>The chips were average. I've had better chips before but that's just how chip shops are. The seafood however was excellent. The calamari was succulent & soft and the fish was well battered. The dim sims were ok, same could be said with the salad.<br/><br/>In a way it was a bit of a hit or miss with some of the menu items, I might come back just to re-rate and try some of their other menu items but I have had a better fish-n-chip experience.

Usually frequent the Highett store, but have been to several other hunky dory restaurants.. so have gotten pretty used to what can be expected from the meals, but today my food was a little more oily and the batter was doughier than usual. But the service is friendly, and food arrives pretty quick.

I went here today with a friend. I ordered the grilled fish and a sweet potato cake and my friend had the grilled fish with the quinoa salad. My fish tasted nice but the batter was hard to cut through. My sweet potato cake was ok but it was very oily. My friend liked her fish, she thought the quinoa salad was ok and she took some quinoa salad home because it was a huge serve.

Great option for a chilled, no fuss yet delicious dinner. Relaxed environment where the meals are beyond filling and incredibly tasty. I ordered the char grilled Calamari with the kale, spinach and broccoli salad. I also added the sweet chilli sauce at the last minute. The calamari was a huge serving and was perfectly cooked-not rubbery in the slightest. I also loved the fresh and healthy salad and the sweet chilli sauce complimented the calamari brilliantly. One of the best food chain options around by far! So yum!

(Sunday 4/9/2016) <br/><br/>Place was alright. Service was less than average. Food is not bad. Price is relatively cheap for its relatively big portion. Their grilled fish meals outshines the deep fried. I prefer my fish to be grilled for its juicier taste. Overall, it was an ok experience.

Hunk Dory is a great example of a modern fish and chippery. There are a few Hunky Dory branches around these days but the Swan Street store is our local. It originated with one store in 2004 but the owner Greg Robotis’ family have been catching and cooking fish for generations, way back to Greece in 1924.

Service was quick and the food was massive and delicious. $22 for a glass of wine and dinner. I asked for Greek salad and they gave me garden. When I flagged it with the staff they quickly gave me a huge additional plate of Greek salad for free.

Amazing calamari with chips and salad. Huge servings as well so make sure you go in with an empty stomach. Great little spot to duck in for some fish and chips.

Had the couples pack, 2 flake, 2 calamari, 2 dim sims, 2 potato cake and sauce with a mountain of chips. $25. My recommendation get the grilled fish, seasoned nicely. A typical fish and chips. Nice staff!

My Hunky Dory experience didn't start well in this near empty fish n chip shop. After standing at the counter for 3-4 minutes without being acknowledged, I was ready to turn and leave. One guy on the phone and the 'pretty' one checking out his face and muscles in the reflection. Ordered the grilled fish of the day with kale salad and chips. It was pretty damn good! Pity about the staff.

My favourite fish and chip used to be fish market on bridge rd. Buy after having hunky dory I am now in love with their fried flake. The batter is perfect not too thick out oily.

Great for quick and dirty meals. If you pay extra for a better cut/type of fish, ask for it without the seasonings. Unfortunately the seasonings are so rich, they block the taste of the fish.

We got takeaway here. Fish and chips were good. Food was ready by the time we drove there which only a 5 minute drive. Will be back if we ever have a craving for fish and chips again.

One of the best fish and chips places in Melbourne. Taste-wise, this is the second best FnC place we've ever tried (the best one is in Williamstown). On our visit we tried most items on the menu except the burger and dimsim, and all were great. Chips were crunchy and light. The seafood was fresh and not oily at all with prawns and calamari being our favorite. Service was great as staffs were very attentive. The shop was big and clean as well.

Tastes as good as any other hunky dory although the portion sizes here a considerably smaller then the other hunky dory places I've been too. Specifically the salt and pepper calamari

Excellent customer service and value for money fresh fish and chips. Battered fish was ok, but the grilled seafood skewer and fried calamari was tasty. The waiter was very helpful and friendly and they allowed me to swap potato cake to dim sum or chips to salad. Very flexible menu, and i love the cozy ambience too.

Came here on recommendation from a colleague... IMHO this is a glorified chippery.. it's ok only in my book. The chips and the batter used for fish weren't crisp. It was instead heavy thick layered and floppy? no doubt the ingredients used was if quality. That you can taste but I think the batter or the way they have gone about in differentiating themselves doesn't work for me. It's pretty good value though! The Bay: chips, 2 large calamari rings, over battered n soft flake and Potatoe cake with tartare sauce for $11.50. Anyway each to their own.. for me the Oakleigh Fish n Chippery still holds #1 spot for me in the Fush n Chups stake. Happy eating all!!!

Absolutely love this place and it's food! Been here many many times before and always come back every few weeks or so to satisfy my fish and chips cravings. Their meals always taste great, service is good, and prices are on point with what you are receiving. This place is very popular, so expect a little delay in peak periods, but I have found that even so, I still get my food in a reasonable time at a high quality.

Customer service very very good - they make you feel welcome. Fish was well cooked with generous helpings of tartare sauce and thousand island sauce. A bit too noisy outside though with music blasting out.

First trip to the Hunky Dory Richmond store. Love everything about the HD team and Richmond is no exception. Delicious, crispy potato cakes, sweet potato fries, fish, salads, the whole shebang. Get there soon and try the amazingness. <br/><br/>The burger is definitely on my 'to try' list after the recommendation from I Eat Melbourne.

Dry and very over cooked. Over priced fish and chips for what you get and tomato sauce being extra was a joke. Sorry, did not enjoy The Bay meal. Might try something different if I am ever there again.

Always very consist having been here 20+ times! Highly recommend. Food is always really good! Really tasty grilled flake, lamb skewers very tasty and great calamari! Burgers are a bit hit and miss, they used to be good but have changed a bit (and they don't even have any bacon you can add as an extra) so I'd give them a miss. If you fee like a burger go elsewhere, but for everything else perfect!

It’s 33 degrees, the cricket is on and everyone has decided it’s fish and chip Sunday. Hunky Dory is packed. There’s a wait for a table and the phone is ringing off the hook for takeaway orders. We arrive before the rush and manage to nab a table outside after ordering and paying at the counter. The fish of the day is dory and salads include slaw, a Greek salad and a broccoli and miso number.

2 out of the 3 times we have eaten here in recent months, they have (1) forgotten our meal all together and (2) got the salads wrong in a take away order.<br/><br/>LOVE the food. Friendly staff, they just needs a little help processing orders!

Avoid this place if you order a hamburger.. Unlike other Hunky Dory outlets the meat is totally ruined by overcooking and squashing down excessively with a spatula. The end result was a dry, tasteless, tough filling. The patty portion was also very small for a $12 burger.

Been here many times. Probably the best casual fish and chips in Richmond (besides Richmond Oyster but thats not what I class as casual). Service is always quick and friendly and orders come out pretty quick too, even when at capacity. <br/>Food is always fresh and cooked well.

Great quick lunch time stop. Staff efficent and always fresh food. Between Hunky Dory and Fonda Mexican up the road I have my lunches covered!!

Hunky Dory is a boutique chain of fish and chip shops that are consistently packed with a broad clientele. The Richmond branch is still relatively new, but is certainly well established. On previous occasions we’ve taken away. Though given the comfortable dining space, both inside and out, there has always been a temptation to enjoy a meal here to get that added freshness that you miss out on with takeaway.

Very friendly staff, with your tradition fish and chip store menu, but with a modernised and very open feel within the restaurant. Traditional fish and chip packs very tasty and fresh, if not a little too battered. But the grilled fish a healthier alternative. And not too expensive for a lunch meal ($8-$20)

The grilled fish pack is delicious! I enjoy it so much I can't seem to get myself to try anything else. Hunky's Richmond is always so consistent with their meals as well, I always like to get the brown rice with my pack and I just love that it doesn't have that powdery taste to it like so many brown rices do and the Greek salad is great! Can't stand it when a restaurant doesn't put the right herbs or ingredients in. I believe their food is well priced for what you get and the staff are also very friendly. I like that it isn't your typical fish and chip take away. When I've been I will always sit in and eat, usually just an eat and run but the restaurant itself has a nice vibe to it. Looking forward to my next meal there!

Take away chips - how long?. I waited 20mins ( docket is time stamped) then cancelled my takeaway chip order. <br/>When they said it would be 10 mins... I thought ... really? For chips. But even that was over promise.<br/>Sort it out guys - u should be better. Went across the road & it took 4 mins

Have been here twice now. Had the grilled fish with rice and salad. The fish was really good but the rice and salad were disappointing.

Good consistency as expected from hunky dory. Big fan of the char grilled calamari and the grilled flake. Never been a huge fan of their chips so happy to have it with rice which sounds silly. Service always average

Welcome Hunkys to Richmond!. I'm a local and I've been to Hunkys three times since it opened about a month ago. Massive thumbs up! Whoever is the brains trust behind single handedly transforming traditionally unhealthy fish and chips into a healthy meal needs to be commended. I always get the grilled dory with brown rice and the quinoa salad and it's nothing short of A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. I've always found the staff super friendly and I think the design of this shop is so much cooler than the other Hunkys shops. It's got my vote!

Fish and chips in Richmond just got awesome.. For anyone that loves fish and chips but could do without the inevitable post binge stomach cramp/ guilty conscience you've got to check this place out. I've been addicted to the grilled fish with African sauce, brown rice (chips when I'm feeling naughty) and salad. It is spot on. Great to eat in, or phone through an order and take it away. The staff there remember my name and are amazing to deal with! Enjoy!!!!

Love Hunkys. Hands down the best fish in Melbourne!! We love that they have healthy alternatives and delish potato cakes when we are feeling a bit naughty. I wish there were more shops around Melbourne .

Super excited that hunky dory came to richmond but it was soggy and horrible. Staff were friendly though. Will be sticking to the port melbourne store.

If you love your fish fresh and tasty you've got the right spot

The good: the fish fillet. The bad: everything else. The fish fillet (I had African) was tender and moist. A nice change when getting grilled fish and receiving many rubbery fillets at your typical fish and chip joint. <br/><br/>However, the chip serving in my meal pack was completely abysmal, similar story for the person I was with's. If we hadn't already gotten home before we saw it, I would have complained without a doubt. It was honestly pathetic. Furthermore, my greek salad was 99% iceberg lettuce with literally 1 lonely olive in the whole container and only scerics of feta (no actual discernible pieces of it). My friend's spinach salad had a similar issue although not quite as bad as mine. It also seemed strange to me that there were 2 decent size fish fillets yet such a pathetic amount of chips. The ratio of fish to chips just makes no sense at all. I would recommend to just get one of these packs between two people and then order extra chips separately. If they are just as stingey with separately ordered chips though then I probably won't bother a third time just because I find it pretty insulting to cheap out when it's probably the product with the highest margin in the whole place, why be so cheap with it?

Yeah... Nah. Have been waiting for this place to open for ages. As a local it was a bit of a novelty to see Hunky Dory open in a prominent spot on Swan. Staff were lovely, venue was cool, but the food was rubbish. We got takeaway fish, calamari, prawn cutlets and chips and it all tasted like the same cardboard rubber. The batter was foul, the calamari was as tough as my old chuck taylors and the fish tasted like soapy water. Maybe a bad night? I certainly hope so. Local fish shop up near Dynamic Tattoo is cheaper and yummier. <br/><br/>Disclaimer - potato cakes were pretty decent

I was in after the Boxing Day test. Despite it being pretty busy (word has obviously got around how good it is here) the staff were really great and friendly. I had the chargrilled calamari which was phenomenal-really big serves. Was great to have a beer with it as well. Will definitely be back

Best fish and chips I've had in ages!!! Had the grilled Mexican fish with quinoa salad which was delicious.

Fresh, delicious seafood - generous serving sizes too! Great to have some fresh salads to accompany the fish too - definitely a new and improved fish and chips experience. Lovely staff, great vibe!

The Asian Cup Tournament is on in Melbourne and there is a lot of excitement in the air. RMIT Newintstudents were invited to enjoy the game by Study Melbourne but they paid for their own meal in Hunky Dory. All the matches in Melbourne are held at AAMI park which is a stone's throw away from Richmond station. A lot of people came to watch the match and it was $15 per match. All the matches went for an hour and a half. It was Korea and Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia won by 3 goals. There are two halves of the match with a 30 minute interval. I would have got food inside the stadium if it wasn't so expensive and the portions were tiny. Also there was a huge line of people all waiting at the one kiosk for food. But up the road is a place called Hunky Dory which is bigger than the one in South Melbourne (five minute tram ride). Here they have the old school fish burger with chips for $12.90. Nowadays places charge about $15 for a burger and a very small amount of chips. You order and pay and they will give you a number This place makes everything fresh so you have to wait for your order. Or like I did watch them make it up. I really enjoyed seeing the production line here and enjoyed looking at the big plates of food for eat in diners. My fish in the burger was very fresh, but the bun was a bit sweet and for $12.90 there were a lot of chips for one person. I couldn't finish it all and I enjoyed the taste of chicken salt which is better than the average salt. Rating: 16/20- healthy, healthy burger for a good price.
