The absolute best Thai restaurant in Melbourne. I die for the twice cooked pork belly and the soft shell crab. Penny and Michelle are the best.
Highly recommend The Piano Restaurant and Bar. Every dish we ordered was excellent. Will definitely be going back.
Nice service excellent food I recommend to everyone to visit this Thai restaurant
Beautiful food and great service. Gorgeous restaurant. Try the massman lamb!
Deep fried snapper incredible! Took us back to fabulous thai in Sydney in the 90s, flavors were fresh and packed a punch! We'll be back.
My favourite Thai place in Melbourne! Excellent food and service, Penny and Tom and the team are fantastic! :)
It was a fabulous experience. Excellent service and food. I'll be sure to return!
Super delicious food, amazing servie and awesome atmosphere! Will definitely be coming back :3
Good service and yummy food. Love it
Amazing!! Food and service are fabulous!!
Very tasty and fresh food. Highly recommend.lamb was super tasty. Good and quick service.affordable price.

Was a nice restaurant, came here on a weekday.
It was very quiet after work, staff were nice. We ordered a few mains, and the dishes were reasonably priced.
There was piano on the corner, and no performances the night we went.
My dad and I stopped in for an early dinner between a vfl game and an afl game and it was great! We arrived about 5:30 and they were still setting up but it got busy quick! The staff dealt with it really well though, very attentive and orders were taken quickly and meals didn’t take long! The food was very tasty and we really enjoyed each dish, available on the entertainment book too!

For any family dinner, Piano Thai is always our first preference. Been there a few times and every time came back with full satisfaction. The food is so fresh and the quality is at the top of the town. I don't miss my Thai food anymore after we discover this Restaurant. Friendly, caring staffs and Owner was also on the floor to look after every guest. Very friendly and exceptional environment. The biggest advantage they have 50+ Free Car Parking at the rear of the restaurant. So never had Parking issue even though the Restaurant is just next to the Melbourne Cricket Ground. We will come back every time we want to have Thai Food.
What a delight! the staff could not have been lovelier. the food was delicious and well priced. warm, comfy atmosphere. would definitely recommend to small or larger groups. look forward to popping in for a meal again real soon
The name Piano was not related to the Thai food but they have the best Thai food in Melbourne. The food was fresh and tasty and the service was Excellent. The Deep fried Snapper was incredible! Took us back to fabulous Thai in Sydney in the 90s, My family had steamed Barramundi and Lamb shank they different in texture and flavor. I will say the best lamb shank in Melbourne. We'll be back surely.
Came here as a result of eatclub and we're so glad we did.
The venue has a couple tables out front and a good sized indoor area with you guessed it a piano. Service was friendly and very polite.
We ordered the curry puffs, signature duck confit and whole fried snapper.
Everything was great, could not fault any of the dishes. The curry puffs were crisp, light and flavoursome. The signature duck confit was fall of the bone soft with crispy skin. Flavours were bold and delicious. The fried snapper was also delicious. Nice crispy batter and soft well cooked meat inside. The sauce it came in was also delicious. With two strong flavoured dish one did not over power the other, really well done.
Nice selection of food, good service, seating area is nice (both inside and outside). One of the dishes we ordered 'Crispy fried whole snapper' it was lovely. And of course you can play The Piano too.
This is my second time at The Piano and it is beautifully presented traditional Thai food. Initially I wanted to check it out as the chefs are ex-Longrain but the prices weren't quite Longrain levels. I've come back again because the food is exceptional.
We were in a group of four tonight and all of us were impressed. The food wasn’t too spicy which is my preference but I’m sure they could take it up a notch if you requested. Green curry was the crowd favourite today so I would definitely recommend
Original review
We caught up in a group of 5 tonight at Piano on account of it being in the entertainment book. We absolutely loved the food, the roti is beautiful and flaky and the massamum curry creamy and rich. Prawn pad Thai was my favourite dish but the vegetarian curry puffs were a strong contender. Hot tip come during happy hour for cheap and delicious cocktails
Stumbled into this little gem after the footy on a cold rainy Sunday night. The place was empty but we decided to try it anyway. We were immediately seated and watered. We ordered a mild chicken green curry for my partner, the red duck curry for me plus some roti, rice and curry puffs to start. At $75 the bill was on the steeper side for Thai but the food was beautiful. My duck had some significant heat as requested. My partner said his curry was a bit too spicy despite the mild order but that was my only fault with this restaurant. Will be back.
The food is so so so good here. The best Thai restaurant I have been to in Melbourne. My only suggestion would be to increase the size of the meals but that could be because I can’t get enough:)
We were disappointed by an Italian restaurant then walked in this one. And thank god we had this one! The food was great. We had the soft shell crab, lamb and duck leg with Roti and coconut rice. I love the duck leg! It tastes like stir fried by Chinese wok with the special Asian food flavour! We were the only customer. The waiter was nice and polite.
My partner and I had dinner here tonight. The service was excellent and very attentive.
We started w roti bread which was great, and
some soft shelled crab. Both 5/5.
I ordered a signature dish of massaman lamb shank which was good but not great. A single lamb shank w lots of potatoes and a whole onion for almost $25?? Nooooo! The sauce was watery unfortunately but it tasted ok.
The vegetarian Pad Thai was good but once again it wasn’t amazing.
Overall the meal had its ups n downs, and for $76 w 2 beers wow! Mmnnn hahaha
Two Sheds
The restaurant was a hidden gem in richmond. With very friendly staff the service and the food are both outstanding. The curry pumpkin was delicious very creamy and goes well with rice. Only downside was the green beans, they were in every dish and it is a bit too much, wish they could use a bit variety in term side greens
Delicious meal, excellent service and BYO! Couldn't ask for anything more. We had the red curry prawns and pork belly and they were both very good and really generous portions. Lots of gluten free options as well
We arrived at The Piano restaurant at happy hour o'clock and ordered several rounds of cocktails before mains. This place was absolutely empty when we arrived which did give me some level of concern. Yes a piano in a Thai restaurant. How very strangey. Curiosities aside the menu was modern Thai and there were plenty of interesting sounding items to choose from. Kelisi liked her traditional pad Thai prawns which came out fresh and zippy. I ordered the mussaman curry lamb which was smooth and devine. Roti was evil, so evil in fact we had to order more. The curry puffs and green chicken curry were also highlights. I'd never considered The Piano when I was actually living in Richmond and had walked past this great place a number of times and assumed classic Italian styling. So glad that Good Food Good Mood recommended we try.
As a modern Thai restaurant, The Piano offers a taste of Thai cuisine with an undeniably Western twist. While we universally would’ve preferred the dishes to be spicier and flavours more intense, what we did sample tonight was delicious nonetheless, with the highlight being that signature Confit Duck.
Came here for casual dinner one evening. Nice quiet ambience and friendly staff. The massaman curry and Pad Thai was very flavoursome. Nice local spot
Needed some hearty comfort Thai food on a very wet and cold weeknight, and The Piano delivered.
The waitress was the nicest and most helpful person you would want for in a restaurant, she was very attentive and constantly topped up water which was the best.
Food was incredibly good, the squid for starters were a delight. I got the red curry with salmon for mains with some roti - oh my god I want to have the flavours in that dish in my mouth forever.
Came in with little expectations, came out with the best experience.
Tasty food, a tad expensive.
We were here on a Wednesday evening, we thought this place would be very packed as reflected per the high Zomato score so we booked a table in advance. Surprisingly, we were the only couple there when we arrived. During our dinner, another couple or two came.
For starters, we got the soft shell crab (3.5/5 points) which were good. The sauce was sweet, tangy, and thick enough. The crab was crunchy and not oily. We however wish there was a bit more meat on the plate. There was also a slight burnt taste in the coating batter.
For mains we started with the red curry crsipy duck which was superb (4/5). The duck skin was crispy (as stated) and light while the meat was tendered and well marinated. The curry soup was light, sweet, and packed with coconut flavour. There were a few lychee pieces which were sweet and lovely as well. The crispy duck is the place's signature dish and we do get why it is.
We also ordered the twice-cooked crispy pork with stir-fried Chinese brocolli was tasty as well (3.5/5). The roast pork skin was crunchy and not too salty while the meat was tender. The veggies were fresh and coated and a slightly sweet sauce.
The coconut rice was excellent (4/5) - firm, moist, and balanced (not too sweet like some other Thai places).
The menu was quite limited and the price is a bit exxy compared to other places on the street. If they lower the price we may pump the score to 4/5. The ambience was a big too quiet as well.
Dozens of people asking me to try this Thai restaurant in Richmond who known by their head chef is from famous Longrain Thai restaurant.
Dishes was well presented but the portion was extremely small. However food quality was good and fresh, especially their pad Thai was amazing. The only dish that was less impress was their entree calamari which was lack of flavour.
The service was fantastic too! Worth for coming back.
The food is to die for. The ambience is perfect. The staff are lovely. It's a little pricey, hence the 4.5 instead of 5/5. This is where we go for a 'really nice' night out ... you should too!
Must visit Richmond restaurant. Food is super tasty and service great. Highlights were the Piano Duck (signature) and Massaman Lamb Shank. 👍👍👍
Best Thai restaurant ever!
Interesting menu with a rang of delicious meals to choose from. Welcome staff and warm atmosphere. I don't understand some bad reviews about this place. Food and service are perfect. Highly recommended +++
Been here a few times.
They are always so friendly! I asked for Cashew Chicken which wasn't on the menu but the lovely staff made it for me.
Highly recommend this place. My friends and I love it!
This little place is totally missed under the radar! It is one of the best Thai restaurants in Melbourne, the staff are so sweet, the food is very fresh and the ambiance is just so cozy and pleasant, if these arnt enough its also BYO!
Its one of the few places I have been to that you so comfortable to stay as long as you want, joke, laugh drink play the piano , sing along etc .
Must try!
We ordered the recommended dishes: entre we had Thai buffalo wing and tom yum soup; mains we had pad Thai, duck confit, chicken green curry and a lamb shank curry. The Tom yum soup, duck confit and lamb shank curry were really nice. Flavours and presentations were good. Meat was really tender. The other dishes were quite average.
The customer service and the atmosphere were good too.
I came here with a large group of 20 people for a birthday celebration, the food was great but not reasonable for the price charged. Service was great.
The Piano was lively and busy when we visited on a warm spring evening. The open doors and windows on to the street built a connection to the street. We'd booked one of the few remaining tables and were soon perusing the menu which was packed with Thai favourites. The modern fit out eschewed south east Asian influences, with plenty of wood and concrete and a bar at the back.
Intimate dining experience with modern decor. Excellent customer service with a modern thai experience. Rump steak stir fry was tender and cooked to perfection. Pad Thai prawns very nice. Green curry chicken was tasty and Steamed barramundi the best I've ever had. Highly recommended and highlight of the night were the cocktails.
Very delicious! We ordered the steamed barramundi, it was so tasty! The service is friendly and thoughtful, and the atmosphere is very romantic and quite! Indulge yourself in it!
The Piano restaurant serves up all the usual Thai dishes with a couple of their own specialties. The service is attentive and food is delicious. Would recommend if in the area. Tomyum Soup Prawn $12.50 traditional spicy soup, tomatoes, mushroom flavoured, chilli and lime juice. Deliciously spicy and full of the signature tom yum flavour. Loved the mushrooms and the juicy prawns. 8.5/10
Yesterday I ordered a delivery, we had prawn pad Thai and curry, was delicious! And the really good size of food too, looking forward to having another meal in the restaurant! :)
The "Mussaman Curry of Slow cooked Lamb Shank" was really awesome, and the piano there has amazing sounds. I played my original pieces and it was a blast. Btw the dude in the picture is a high school student who played "river flows in you" by Yiruma when I took the shot.
Visited Piano a couple of weeks a go! Absolutely delicious, we ordered the curry puffs, cashew chicken, the duck and the lamb curry! All delicious, they have a vege menu and also have happy hour! Great service, great atmosphere. Can't wait to be back, definitely recommend 10/10
Great food & also very well catered for gluten free, including banana fritter & soft shell crab!
Crab was amazing!
Only thing negative is that in ordering the GF with the Asian male waiter, he got confused and didn't realise we ordered gluten free & non-gluten free, so on 2 occasions we missed out on something.
Hubby wasn't happy when he didn't get his Banana fritter, especially after watching our daughter eat her GF one! Food was great though and lovely atmosphere. Recommend.
Tonight's dinner was absolutely delicious. This is definitely 100% authentic Thai food with good portion sizes. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive, we were well looked after. We had the crispy pork belly, the green chicken curry and fried tofu. We finished it off with the Bangkok Special which was just devine. I think we have found our new local favourite! Highly recommended! Perfect for a rainy casual Melbourne winter night!
Decided to try this place last night-first impression was that it was fancy and had a romantic atmosphere to it, with the dim light and candles. The Thai food was quite nice, and beautifully cook. The customer service was also very good, with friendly staff and short waiting time. Only downfall was that the toilet was kind of small and the heater was broken since it was cold yesterday-but that's a small fault. Overall, a pretty good experience- would definitely recommend to Thai food fans :)
Must try cocktails.... Very good....
Ambience very good.... Service very good and courteous....
Overall food was very good....! Will visit again....
Wow. Contemporary style Thai food! St first I thought the fancy wines and cocktails weren't appropriate with Thai food but after having dinner there I understand. The food is absolutely delicious, a lot of subtile flavours. We shared two dishes, the signature duck confit and the duck red curry, both were great. I find that the pineapple and lychee with the coconut based curry is a great idea, definitely adds a lot to the dish. Thumbs up for the food!
Yum! All the reviews that you read are true - this is one of the best Thai restaurant in town. We felt like something fresh and spicy authentic Thai taste with a neatly modern presentation and that's what we got! There was a short wait for a table (a good sign - fresh, buzzing and busy!) and we were pointed to a table for three. We ordered the red duck curry - lighter than many I've had, not too creamy with coconut milk, great balance with fresh red chilli. We had the steamed fish - light and tasty, the mushrooms really took up the ginger flavour.. And some more fresh chilli! The star of the show was the crispy pork belly with Chinese broccoli - crispy, and tender delicious! We were stuffed full so couldn't try anything sweet. Though byo is available. Food - sensational; service - fast and particularly friendly.. If I lived in Melbourne , I'd come back often!!!
Absolutely love this place! We've been here over a dozen times and the food and service are consistently excellent! Great contemporary Thai bold flavours. The Thai buffalo wings have just the right amount of sauce and crispiness. Green papaya salad has the perfect balance between spice and tang. Tom yum soup is delicious. Our favourite is definitely the deep fried whole snapper! We would come dine here just for that and have ordered it on multiple occasions. Their coconut rice is one of the best in town, and it's not even listed on the menu! What's even more amazing is that everything can be done gluten-free! BYO for a modest corkage. Highly recommended!
The service is super friendly and efficient. The food is also very nice, with their signature duck dish being the stand out. The crispy pork belly and the lamb shank massaman curry were also very nice.
First time having Thai food, was very nice good selection of options, staff were friendly and service was very good, in a nice location up at the beginning of Bridge Road
I can say this is the best Thai cuisine in Melbourne. The Piano is a new standard Thai restaurant. My friend and I really enjoyed signature dish Crispy duck. Highly recommended!

Really nice Thai food! The service was nice and quick and the food was overall pretty good. The portion sizes were a little small and some of the food was a bit too spivey for me. Don't get me wrong though the place has a good vibe and is worth a visit!!

Thai food seems to have earned a special place in the hearts of Melbournians of late. Since 2013, The Piano has been serving contemporary Thai cuisine with a touch of finesse, brought to us by ex-Longrain chefs Tommy and Arte. Taking its place near the entrance is the eponymous German vintage piano, left behind by previous tenants, The Qualia Lounge. Not just a random fancy, the piano also pays homage to the site adjacent to the restaurant, which was operated as a piano maker in the 1800s.
Delicious food great mocktails super quick service so we could get back to the cricket, only a 10 min walk from MCG. Perfectly suited to today. Betel leaf larb Gai soft shell crab tamarind sauce. 48 and 75 tram go straight past too. $63
We always love the food here, which combines really nice Thai food with some modern Australian flavours, of consistently high quality. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that the wait can sometimes be a bit longer than I'd like. The pork belly and the crispy duck are particular favourites.
Lovely little Thai restaurant at the Punt Rd end of Bridge rd. The food is delicious, excellent fresh Thai flavours and service with a smile. We ordered the soft shell crab, barramundi salad and a curry - we even went back for a second serving of the crab..that's how good it was!! I'll definitely be going back.
We have been here a few times now and really enjoy the food, so why the 3.5? I am getting softer as I age and finding spicy peppers to be less palatable. And I used to love them ... go figure. I specifically asked for mild pad Thai with no peppers and holy atomic nuclear warfare. So my reason for a lower score could literally be another's reason to raise their points. Dishes are well portioned and there seems to always be room for a walk-in meal. Their flavors are very good and and service is spot on attentive!!
Great food, great service, great price. They could stand to put up the prices, but shhh that's a secret between you and me.
We ordered the beef and it was especially good. Everything else was good too :)
This place was a great find , the food was delicious we tried the veg spring rolls ,chicken larb salad, yellow lamb shank curry , pad thai and crispy duck curry. All the food was great , the duck was the table favorite. I could definitely see myself returning .The service was impeccable too for the prices well beyond what other places of a similar price range would offer .
The bill only came up to 114 for 3 people including a bottle of wine.
The BEST Thai restaurant we've found in Melbourne!!! My husband and I enjoy dinner here each week after dancing at Loco Mojo across the road. The food is consistently fresh, fast and superb. We've been delighted with everything we've tried on the menu, which changes seasonally. Really exciting and original dishes here - tonight the sour orange crispy barramundi curry, and slow cooked beef ribs with spicy soy ginger, baby corn and mushrooms were standouts. Fabulous desserts, great wine menu and always warm, welcoming and attentive service. An undiscovered gem, and only a short tram ride from the CBD. Highly recommended!
Excellent thai food. Randomly stumbled upon this restaurant on a quiet weekday night. Pleasantly surprised. Service was good and the food was delicious. The prices are also very reasonable given the portion sizes and the quality. Highly recommend the egg nest.
Amazing Night. Went here for my 27th with a group of 14. We ordered for ourselves rather than go the set menu and the food was amazing. The egg net was my favourite dish of the night and because we had so many people I did get to try a lot of things from their menu. Cork-age is $8 per bottle.
Very fresh and flavorful Thai food. A modern Australian atmosphere. I felt that the food was traditional Thai. They do offer entrees such as oysters. The pad Thai was very fresh and not oily. I have not had decent pad Thai in Melbourne but it was very good here. They have a regular bar menu and the Mojitos were great. You should give it a try.
One of the best Thai's in Melbourne. Fabulous and tasty food, excellent service and pleasant decor - oh and reasonable prices - Can't ask for more than that !
Cosy environment, I like the piano in the Restaurant, it gives it a rusty look. Good was fresh. Oysters were amazing! Fish was delicious! Service was alright. Overall it was good experience.
Try the crispy duck and pork belly!. Been here a few times and enjoyed it every time. Their food is delicious and well portioned, their crispy duck is not to be missed, their pork belly is one of the best and their dessert selection is divine. Their service is also very polite and attentive. If only I lived closer I would eat here all the time!
Great food and lovely service. Dinner for two. The cocktail were fabulous which I didn't expect from a Thai restaurant. The food was presented in a way that made your mouth water just by looking at it. The taste was even better. We ordered oystes but they ran out because it so popular, the owner went out of his way to buy some more. It was very fresh. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for something innovative to eat. Full stars.
It wasn't too crowded for a Friday night. The food tastes fine. Very attentive nice waiter and waitress. I hope the owner of the eatery is reading this, you need to really check out what a pane cotta is! What you got there is just agar agar with coconut ice cream. Love the yummy ice cream.
Incredible friendly service, amazing food- so fresh, tasty and full of flavour! Some of the best Thai I have had. Highly recommend.
Unpretentious but one of the very best Thai's around. Delightful staff too.
Very nice contemporary Thai food in a modern setting. Very friendly staff too. Prices are moderate as well. We enjoyed it here and will certainly return.
There's been some great Thai restaurants in Melbourne for some time, but not what Khun Tom is knocking out. This is such a magic menu and the charming Khun Penny looking after the front, leaves you no choice but to sit back in seriously indulge
Undoubtedly some of the best food I have ever eaten, complimented by perfect and friendly service.
Amazing flavours. Great variety of wine. Terrific thai food. Favourite in Richmond.
Loving service. Such a great place to have dinner. The service was the best I've had so far, staff are eager to serve. Food was presented and prepared with such care
Always excellent great flavours, service and value
Best Thai in Richmond by far. Penny is just a delightful host and great staff around her. Best value sings beer in Melbourne. Stir fried Thai basil with tender quality beef with snakebean is amazing. Try asking for it extra hot!!! Keep up the great work penny.
Superb. Wonderful food, quality beverages including a great selection of wines. Very professional staff and great service, an all round superb dining experience. I would definitely recommend it and looking forward to returning very soon.
Beyond great!. The food is prepared with a lot of care, and the flavours are great! it's not going to take too long for this place to get busier.
Thumbs up. Went there this evening on the back of the other diner reviews. Totally concur. This restaurant is excellent. Delicious food and good value. Beef stir fry was mouth watering. Service was attentive, but wish the water jug was left on table, rather than constant refilling by table staff.
Yum!!. Love this restaurant! Different to your average Thai place! Fresh and tasty. I like the pork, duck and the rice noodle with beef. Order takeaway is quick too, you won't be disappointed :)
Value. This is the best value for money restaurant in Melbourne.
This is now my favourite restaurant.
The thai is fresh and light not heavy like so many Thai restaurants.
Wow!
Beautiful!. The best Thai in Melbourne and at a great price! I would eat here every night if I could. Highly recommend the curry puffs, crispy duck and massaman. Thank you Penny for your amazing food!
I love Krua Thai so it was hard to choose the unknown new restaurant across the road.
But, Piano beat not only Krua Thai but every other Thai restaurant in Melbourne by a streak. So delicious and such great value for money.! Can't wait to be back!!
Simply the best thai in Melbourne! After reading the reviews the decision to come to Piano was our best dining decision of the year. Sensational food and service as everyone else has said. Tell your friends and family this is a must try!
Brilliant!. This place will always be Qualia Lounge to me, even though it's been sold and turned into a thai restaurant. But it now has a new place in my heart as one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever eaten from!
I went with a friend and we had the papaya salad, signature crispy duck, and the pork belly. They were all incredible! I can't wait to go back, and plan to make this my top choice any time I'm organising a meal with friends. It was just brilliant.
All I can say is just- 'wow'. Amazing food at the piano- if I had to choose a final meal, this would be high up on my list. As a new restaurant, as this place gains more popularity, I hope the quality of food and service stays as high a calibre as we experienced.
As everyone else has said, this place is seriously good! Thai infusion, so very modern Thai flavours. Staff were very attentive and accommodating. So nice to finally have a decent, modern Thai restaurant on Bridge Road. We had the Crispy Duck which was divine and the Mussaman Lamb Shank curry which was so flavoursome. Will be back very soon!
Delicious food! We had the Chicken Larb Salad to start followed by the Crispy Duck and Crispy Pork Belly. The flavours were amazing! We were also very impressed with the service. Lovely place - will definitely be back!
Absolutely delicious! Great to have a modern Thai restaurant at this end of Bridge Rd! Staff were fabulous, food is superb, a must visit! Pork Belly, Piano Ribs, Crispy Duck are absolute favourites and all the entrees were perfect! Very much enjoyed and will be regulars
Loved coming to the Piano for an amazing Thai dinner courtesy of this family run restaurant which only opened last week. We were warmly greeted by the waitress who was so friendly. The atmosphere was great and lively. The food was absolutely delicious and can't recommend it enough, we had the chicken satay to start which was perfectly cooked. For mains we had the signature Piano crispy duck which was so beautifully cooked and slid off the bone in a yummy spicey soy sauce with Thai basil and beans, had to fight over it with my husband who also had the Thai green chicken curry which was equally as good! Portion sizes were great and excellent value as it was an opening promotion, my only regret is being so full that we didn't get to try the banana fritters! We'll save that for next time!
... Mussaman Curry with Lamb Shank ($20.5). It was a hearty medley of buttery potatoes and lamb that fell off the bone with the gentlest tug from the fork, drowned in a creamy coconut and peanut sauce.
