Review Koutouki Cafe - Richmond

Purple Sunset
Super affordable family-owned home-cooked Greek food. Dinner menu is not displayed; staff will come to your table and tell you what 80+ year old mom is cooking in the kitchen that night. Favourites are fried calamari (the meatiest calamari we've ever tried!) and meatballs (moist, tasty bastards, those things are). Tip #1: If George is not inundated by orders, he'd take the time to sit down and have a chat with you. Tip #2: weekday nights are quieter, you have a better chance of quicker serving. Sunday lunch only sandwiches and coffee available. Book for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights if you don't mind joining the crowd! WHY I GAVE FIVE STARS: The owners clearly care about what they serve, cook the food themselves (not hired chefs). There's nothing fancy or pretentious about this place, just good ol' traditional Greek food! We receive personalised customer service whenever we visit. These guys tick all the boxes for us!

We had a lovely dinner at Koutouki, a family run business. This a quiant little Greek cafe have been operating for the past 18 years. We had quite a few dishes and they were all yummy, very flavourful and delicious. The host was amazing and the service top notch. Great time and great food.
Bryanna Hoy
Authentic Greek cafe, really loved the feel of this place and customers speaking in Greek is all the better. Really nice service and spanakopita was delicious!
Jellicle Lolol
The food was great traditional Greek food. My favourite was the Saganaki and the calamari.

Had bacon and eggs. I guess you can’t stuff that up. Food was great. I had my kids with me so the chef made the bacon crispy which both my kids loved. Coffee was really good. Cheaper option then across the road and the food came quickly. Will return to try the souvlaki.

This is a small, no-frills cafe. So when I was charged $17.50 for a spanakopita and a coffee, it took me by surprise. The spanakopita was basic but good. The coffee was dreadful. The milk tasted it had vanilla flavouring and not what I expected.

Family type venue with real Greek food, home-made style. Friendly staff and big serve for an affordable price.

Excellent, smartly priced home made Greek lunches and dinners. My go to for a souvlaki on a Friday lunch. The dinner menu is seasonal, fresh. Highlights slow cooked lamb, calamari, mums meatballs, dips, stuffed capsicums, it's all excellent.

Came here for a work dinner at this sweet family run Greek restaurant. It's such a cute little place that has great ambience. The dishes we chose were delicious and generous in portion size. We needed a little help ordering and the staff were just lovely. We chose the lamb - of course, because no one cooks lamb like they do in a Greek restaurant.

Everything is fresh and deliciously tasty. This place gets busy so suggest you book in advance. Well worth waiting to get into this place. Takeaway available. Dietaries catered for.

Wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Pram/stroller accessible. Reasonable parking.
Quince And Cheese
Humble little Greek cafe near Burnley Station. It's a homely place with an old school vibe and decently priced breakfasts or takeaway snacks. I recommend the snanikopita. It's $7.50 and makes a great lunch on the run. Pair with a coffee and you're good to go.

Love this place, the family that run it are always friendly, you get whatever Yiayia is cooking for the day and it's always just good food in a small casual dining setting.

Had dinner there last night and I thought that after the reviews, it would be great food and service.
I admit the service was fantastic and that is what the 3 votes was for, but the food wasn’t, in fact it was very ordinary and also the lack of menu was worrying as you don’t have any idea of $$$$ of the food until you pay.
Amazing food. There was so much food and great value for you money! Service was awesome too. George makes you feel like family. Best Greek food I have ever had!

THIS IS THE MOST UNDERRATED GREEK IN MELBOURNE
do not let the facade fool you. The food is 100% authentic and delicious!!!!!
George and his family are super welcoming and accomodating (we ate here with two coeliacs no problems at all)
The food is fresh and delicious and there is always far tooo much to finish (don’t worry they give you take away containers)
The ambience can be questionable as it is very small but the food and hospitality definitely make up for this!!
Call and book! You will not regret it
Do not come here thinking you will choose off a menu - George will take the best care of you. The meatballs are not to be missed!
A Richmond gem and favourite!

Disappointing spinakopita - not enough crunch or seasoning. Lots of spinach for $9 take away but the guy behind the counter seemed a bit stressed.
Costa
Very basic but delicious souvlaki. Very home-like. Pretty sure I even saw an old yiayia (grandma) in the back making the food which is awesome.

Best souvlaki and spanakopita in Melbourne.
Not a date night venue, and Koutouki is nothing other than a simple local tasty Greek cafe that makes it so right!
My friend turned her nose up at it when I suggested it for lunch, and with one bite of my piece of pita and she was immediately converted..
I will return every time I'm in Melbourne town :-)

Delicious Greek food! Have been a few times for dinner. There's no menu, so they'll just tell you what "Mama" is cooking that night. It's always delicious. The meats are cooked so well and the food is fresh and flavoursome. The calamari is the best I've had anywhere. Perfectly cooked, melts in your mouth. Meatballs are also usually a crowd favourite. The restaurant doesn't look like much, but the food is so good and it's really cheap.
Angie Bone
Lovely small Greek cafe serving amazing souvlaki and homemade Greek pastries at very reasonable price. We ordered the chicken open souvlaki which is so delicious and the salad on the side is just nice. I would go back to try their lamb souvlaki which I'm absolutely confident that I would never get disappointed.

Koutouki recently catered for my husband's 40th birthday party. The service from the guys was impeccable, they genuinely cared about our party and the food they provided was delicious! We had dips, calamari, lamb, meatballs and salad...everything was cooked to perfection and all of our guests commented on how amazing the food was. Very reasonably priced and lots of food! Would definitely recommend Koutouki cafe for catering or eating in.

Great place to eat breakfast, lunch and dinner family business best food ever on burnley street Friday night traditional Greek roast lamb. Best souvlakia in town
Morgueman
An unassuming 'cafe', simply decorated offing simple food. Nothing wrong with that provided the food delivers. As other reviews state there is a very limited menu and a few specials.

A quick lunch I decide to order one of the specials... a chicken Slovaki for $10. While I wait for gyros to be shaved and pita to be heated I check out the pastry offerings which look nice but Im left wondering if they come with chips and salad or just by themselves etc. A little more info would help customers and possibly increase their sales. Anyway onto the food. Alas there's not much to say. It was a run of the mill souvlaki, a little heavy on the onion. Didnt get much taste from the tzatiki and chicken didnt have a lot of flavour. Ive had a lot better elsewhere. Maybe I got a bad day? Other people Ive spoke with recon its great.

What I have more of an issue with was that the guy who was cooking my souv appeared to come straight from outside having a smoke, took my order and started cooking my food. I didnt realise this until the guy went back out to finish his smoke after serving me. Sorry, but food hygiene 101.

I might go back and try their pastry offerings but it wont be until I've tried other places in the area.
Tony
Very very very good Greek food supported by excellent service.

Have been here for lunch and dinner, and it has never disappointed once. There is almost menu, but the tip is to pretty much order the specials of the day, then sit back and be prepared to indulge in some fantastic Greek food.
Jimfrost1991
It must have been a bad night as the waiter must have sworn under his breath about annoying customers at least 3 times. When he did come round and speak he was pleasant and lively, didn't mind dropping the f bomb though. The food was basically ok. Greek salad was good and simple, the calamari fresh and not spongy it basically just a bowl of fried squid. Was hoping the meatballs would blow me away given the reviews and hype the waiter made and the sauce was delicious but the meatballs were more bread than meat and very spongy. Price wise is just ok. A few soft drinks, a glass of red, a piece of fried cheese, simple Greek salad, bowl of squid and meet balls for close to $90 isn't exactly great value.

I eat here a few times a week and the souvlakis are nothing short of superb, fresh delicious ingredients and great service. Simple but genuine decor and the sound of Greek being spoken adds an edge you can't concoct.

Come here for DINNER, not lunch. Cuz that's when all the magic happens. I had the Greek sausage, tomato and onion pitta and it was AMAZING. Sausage was ridiculously savoury and the flavours were so strong. Absolutely wonderful. Preferred it for a savoury fix over the open souvlaki. George treats you like his guests and is truly passionate about serving good food.

Gorgeous food and service. You wouldn't think about having a nice dinner here if you judge by the looks but these people know their food. During the day the place looks like a take away kebab shop. By the evening the lights are on, they pop out the white paper table cloths and bring out the sizzling plates of deliciousness. The space is small, with big tables and warm smiles all around.

As others said there is no menu, which means you don't really know the prices or sizes of the food you are getting if you are unfamiliar with greek food. We paid $23 for a bottle of okay wine, $22 for a heaping plate of calamari and $12 for a side of greek salad. Starters were about $10 a pop. With few other things it came out to about $90 for two, without dessert. It was great but not as cheap as the place suggests. The owner of the place does the serving and he will tell you if you ordered too much which we really appreciated. We had a great experience and we can't wait to go back.

Don't snub this place until you've tried it. It may not look fancy but beneath all that is a gem of a restaurant. There is almost no menu, you're told what the specials of the day are and my advice is just to go for the specials. So we had the dips with home made pita bread, saganki, half slow roasted lamb shoulder and the kebabs (lamb and chicken). Everything was so delicious, it is hard to narrow down my favourite - maybe the lamb shoulder by a hairpin.

This place isn't after Michelin awards or The Age good food award (and they don't need to). Friendly staff, reasonable prices and delicious food is all they do. Thanks for the great meal. Two thumbs up.
Adrian 'El Tubbo' Koukoulas
Simply superb. Experience and food exceeded expectations and we have grown up with authentic Greek food.
Dips, saganaki, meat, baked rissoles with sauce and feta, and greek salad to accompany meal, all devine.
A must.
Rhi Godwin
Koutouki was likeable as soon as we walked in; informal and charming, paper table cloths and no menus, just the kind of place you want on a low key Friday night. Greeted warmly, we were recited the menu - after selecting multiple dishes we were emphatically told that we had massively over ordered, and that two dishes with some bread was plenty, the only difficulty was choosing between dishes. In the end we went for the pita bread and dips then some halloumi cheese followed by a small Greek salad, the roasted lamb and calamari.

I appreciated the waiter/owner telling us we had ordered too much - a rarity in this restaurant day and age and boy, was he right as the portions were HUGE (two containers taken home and this was after scaling back our order!).

The bread and dips were delicious and fresh, the halloumi was salted, crisp and delicious and the mains that followed were perfection; a pile of slow cooked, juicy pulled lamb and then a large plate of crisp, tender calamari. The Greek salad was packed with olives and feta. The best part was that you could tell it was all made fresh and with love.

I was so delighted with our choice to come here - next time, we will try the rissoles and saganaki as they looked divine.

Will be returning, great service and incredible food - generous in its portion size and priced so well that it'll be a regular choice.

Thanks for the amazing service and food, you make everyone feel like family and cook with love. Never had a meal so good and I'm sure I'll be back a million times! Thank you
Annabelle
Best Greek in Melbourne. Great service, take the staff advice about what to eat but everything is good. Love the gyros and also the calamari. Servings are generous and this place is pretty amazing value for money.
Harry Barker
Authentic Greek food cooked by a great Greek family. Calamari was incredible and the Chicken gyros was f@*£%ng great! A must go for all Greek food lovers!
TresHungry
My new favourite Greek restaurant! Every dish we had was delicious. The pita bread arrived warm and were ever so soft and fluffy. The tzatziki and taramasalata dips were on POINT! The calamari was amazingly tender - definitely the best I have ever tasted in my life. To top it off the whole meal only cost us around 20 per head, and we took away a whole heap of lamb because we were already so full we felt like we needed to roll out of our seats. My meal at Koutouki was probably the best experience with Greek cuisine I have ever had. I already want to go back for round 2.
Carracciturner
Authentic, homely, no-frills. Fantastic home cooked fare, served without any fanfare or fancy names- straight from the heart. A wonderful range of Greek dishes, with the rissoles being a consistent highlight. I must confess I am not even a big fan of Greek food but this place always impresses me.
Nicole
This place is amazing. When I go here for dinner I order everything. Literally, everything. The thought of the meatballs makes my mouth water, the dips, the bread, the lamb, saganaki, I can't get enough. The amazing food is complemented by the friendliest service I've ever experienced.

And if you happen to be near by in the morning, they serve the best coffee in Richmond with the freshest spanakopita for a cheeky breakfast.

Everything You Hear About Koutouki is True!. Definitely a fantastic Greek experience. Casual, quite small place with amazing food at ridiculously good prices. Just be guided by the staff's recommendations, you won't be disappointed.

I should keep this secret. Its little, therefore I shouldn't tell you how great it is because I may not get a table when I want one. Anyway, it's the best. Devine food, lovely, friendly, genuine family running the place, it's the bomb. Mamas rissoles are a God given gift. George makes you feel like a dinner guest in his home and Stella is the most amazing cook. My favourite restaurant.

There are plenty of great Greek Restaurants around Melbourne, and Koutouki Cafe in Richmond is definately high up on the list of places to visit. The restaurant is quite nice, with a limited number of tables (about 6 indoors and 3 outdoors). We came here tonight without making a prior booking and were informed that all the indoor tables were already booked, but we could sit outside. Being a chilly evening, this was not ideal but we took the table anyway. We sat for a bit before I went in and requested a menu. I was told that the waiter would come out shortly and let us know what was on the menu. It was a little strange but they did not have a menu. Our waiter told us that the menu items change daily so they were unable to make up a set menu but would recite the options to us. Unfortunately as there were quite a few options on the ‘menu’ tonight, we did not remember all of them and were pretty much ordering on the spot so we didn’t forget any more.

I think we all just found the best Greek restaurant in town! Managed by real born Grecians , Koutouki Cafe has original and definitely authentic taste to every single dish on the table. The premises is owned and maintained by George and his mother. George is wacky and an amiable fellow, but you could tell he is absolutely serious when he gets down into the kitchen. It was a crowded night and as we sat down on our table, w e were confused because there was only breakfast and lunch menu on the board of the restaurant, nothing that explicitly describes dinner. I remembered asking for the menu because there wasn't any. George responded, "I am the menu!". All eyes widened. After making an order and thinking about it, I observed all tables and noticed that most customers that came by were all loyal returning customers. Most of them seem to know what we don't. Flat Bread And Dips Maybe we were just hungry, but maybe it was that good. We had these amazing pita paired with dips. You could even buy the uncooked packs here for personal cooking at home. Just put olive oil in a pan and pan fry it in medium heat, serve it with any dips of your choice. The three dips include Tzatziki, Garlic and one in pink that I can't crack my mind on what it was. I loved the garlic most but regretted having too much of it because its aftertaste lingers in the mouth the whole night, and the next day included. Greek Salad Fresh with cucumbers, red peppers, onions, olives, feta and herbs. Saganaki Love the saltiness that impregnates the layer of Saganaki. This fried cheese we ate with pita bread and dips as well. After all what is cholesterol? Lamb Giros The Lamb Giros were by far one of the best I have had in Melbourne. Koutouki Cafe's lamb souvlaki is now my favourite aside from my other souvlaki dealer from Lamb On Chapel . The lamb taste is a little bit gamey, but tempered down with the caramelization from the grilling. Calamari The calamari cuts were quite thick. Its very lightly battere

Serving good Greek food in seriously generous portions, in a welcoming environment it is one of our favourite places to visit.

Best Greek in Melbourne. This is the best Greek in Melbourne. Amazing food, really friendly service and crazy cheap! This has been added to my list of 'must take' for visitors to Melbourne
Michael
Only had a quick lunch of souvlaki and meatballs but it was great

Amazing Greek food and service! Highly recommended!. Had an amazing experience dining here. The food is authentic and delicious. The service is friendly and fast. We will definitely be back with more friends!

Went here last night and it was awesome! Such a pleaent surprise. So unpretentious, authentic and delicious. The dips were freshly made by grandma only a couple hours earlier, pide so fresh and tasty. The calamari was generous and the meatballs were melt in the mouth. We were completely stuffed by the end if the meal. Super reasonable prices and the owner even treated us to homemade ouzo shots at the end of out meal. Highly recommend!

Super yum & super cheap!. Super yum and super cheap! simple, genuine greek food at a great price served by a friendly family. Wonderful trio of dips with plenty of pita bread- something that most greek restaurants in Melbourne always skimp on! Looking forward to taking friends and family back to enjoy with me!

Best Greek feed. George with the help of his mum and his nephew run one of the best genuine greek eateries in Melbourne. No Menu and no big plates with little food. Just good quality home cooked greek cuisine with great service and a story behind it.

Little Greek Gem. Some of the best tasting Greek food I've had in a long time!
Very friendly staff.
One of our new favourite places to eat in Richmond.
We will see you again soon!

A new favourite. Ride past here on the way home from work and always looks cosy. Finally got to visit and was super impressed. Simple, authentic and extremely flavoursome food. Way better than all the better known greek places around melbourne. Great hospitality from lovely people too. Will be spreading the word!

OMG this place is Awesome!!! the food is so good and the owner is super friendly. I want to bring this place back to Canada with me! You have to try it to know how great it is
Eating Monster
Madly delicious. This is a cafe that I would absolutely recommend to anyone looking for wholesome, authentic greek food at fabulous price. I ate there with my family of 4 for the first time today. We had a trio of dips with pitta, lamb, Greek salad and rissoles. The dips were delicious and homemade pitta so soft, yet chewy. The lamb was so lean and succulent, and the greek salad was generously topped with olives, fetta and sweet tasting peppers. In short, the meal was to die for. To top it off, the service we received was superb. We were warmly welcomed by the family running the cafe and later greeted by the lovely Greek mama who cooked our meals. The night was completed with a pleasant surprise in the form of a shot on the house an extremely reasonable bill. If you are reading this review, I urge you to give this place a go. My family and I are now fans ;)

Great food. We went here for a quick family meal and weren't disappointed. The dips were magnificent, the calamari was fabulous and the meatballs with fetta and tomato sauce very tasty. It would have been good to have some more of their tasty pita bread. Next time we'll ask!
Thezalicious
Love this joint. It's easy to forgive the decor and bright lights once the food arrives! love that they don't have a extensive menu and you are briefed on what they have on the night. The meatballs smothered in sauce and feta are amazing! Can't wait to go back and eat some more
Jolting Joe
Great neighbourhood place. Great little joint, this one.

The dips are great. Gigantes (beans in tomato sauce) are brilliant. Superb quality calamari.

Highlight of the menu are the rissoles. Tasty, savoury, plump spheres in a swampy, gutsy, thick tomato sauce.

All-round very good quality, fairly inexpensive, traditional, flavoursome, carefully prepared Greek food. A bit of a rarity in modern Melbourne, where most restaurateurs seem to be more interested in putting a "twist" on Greek food, monkeying around with traditional dishes and doubling the prices without improving the quality.
Ben Smith
Awesome food, had the lamb souvlaki so many flavours, great little local
Avolove
Best Greek food you will ever find in Melbourne and George is the most awesome guy you will ever meet. Beautiful food, fantastic hospitality, nothing more to say.
Jane Van Ommen
This place is amazing. George is so friendly and his mum in the kitchen....WOW! Her cooking is unbelievable!! Better than what I've had In Greece. Can't go pass the meatballs, there are so light and fluffy, the best I've had
Jeremy
Hands down, some of the best calamari I have ever had. So fresh, tender and flavoursome! The atmosphere was fun and relaxed. Prices were very reasonable (expect to pay $25-30pp for entree and a main). Will be back!
Jess
Great atmosphere and food. I really enjoyed my evening at Koutouki. The food was delicious, and the portions were very generous. They don't have a written menu, which is part of the charm of the place - it feels almost as if you're going to have dinner with a Greek woman at her house and she is cooking whatever she feels like that day. But there were still plenty of things to choose from. Three of us ordered 3 chicken skewers, a lamb gyros plate, a greek salad, and pita bread and we were stuffed! Definitely good quality and value. I will for sure be going back there soon. Authentic Greek food and a wonderful atmosphere.
Frank Foreal
Yes a genuine Koutouki. In Melbourne we are punished by so called authentic Greek restaurants who dish out average meals at over inflated prices. With the exception of the delightful Hellenic Republic there are few interesting Greek restaurants.
Koutouki, as the name suggests, is a simple hole in the wall eatery, there is no pretension, there is no hype, it's simple honest food.
It's a great place
Stella
Amazing amazing amazing! Absolutely amazingly service and even more amazing food! Definitely a 10/10 so cheap and massive plates to share would definitely recommend it to everyone who want a real authentic Greek meal!
Kel
Thank you so much George, Geoff, Vicki and Stella! What a magnificent feast we had for Sunday lunch, a special birthday celebration. The lamb is the best I've had and Stella's rissoles cannot be beaten. The hospitality we were shown was simply brilliant. We felt like honoured guests. These guys deserve every success, my thanks to all of them for the best lunch ever x
Joh N
We had a fantastic meal at kautouki! The owners were so accommodating and friendly, and recommended the best range of food for us to share. It tasted so good! Slightly run down decor, but great atmosphere nonetheless. Greek beer and free Ouzo shots made my night!
RNR
Greek mystery. Enjoyed an excellent meal, couple of comp shots of firewater. Entertaining bunch of mediterraneans. Mama is very cute.

BUT - no prices. Why do Greek restaurants refuse to let customers know what things cost?

We are not the tax department - and we like to know what we're up for, cause we are not related to Onassis. Fair nuf?

Greek restaurants probably caused the GFC.
Pinch
Delicious and excellent value. The service was friendly, the food was amazing; the lamb cutlets we juicy, the calamari just perfect, and the rissoles were superb! I’d highly recommend this place. A feast for five people for $102! Five very satisfied customers can’t wait to come again!! Hard to find this kind of quality, flavour and service for this price anywhere in Melbourne!
Mtpr
Looks can be deceiving. This little cafè has to be one of the best Greek places in Melbourne. Family run, the mum's in the kitchen, son out on the floor and dad gives a hand with the dishes. Warm, friendly and humble would be the perfect way to sum up our experience. "Mama's" rissoles were to die for with olive and chili bread on the side as was the succulent calamari. Garlic's right up my alley, but if you're not a garlic fan, stay away from the tzaziki. Already have plans to return next week.
Dbd
Fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Sensational Greek fare per all other reviews. The house-made rissoles (sp?) are insanely good, be sure to leave room for them & the homemade olive & chilli bread they're served with to mop it all up with. Loved the friendly and warm service the most - wish there were more places like it.
BYO wine only.
Tastytasty
Best Greek experience outside Greece. I am lost for words.... The authentic favors blew me away. From the dips and fluffy warm pita to the flash fried melt in your mouth calamari, lamb souvlaki, and "to die for rissoles" which we highly recommend. All this in a warm family environment in Richmond. Thank you thank you... We'll be back for more.

Went for dinner on Friday recently over priced and disappointing. Fish like rubber could have bounced off wall. Lamb $35!!! And so full of fat or grizzly it was uneaten. Save your money and go somewhere else!!
Hila Bor
Hila. Great hospitality, fantastic skordalia, gigantes and calamari (but EVERYTHING IS GOOD) huge portions and BYO. Casual dining at its best, can't wait to return!

Very tasty lamb souvlaki.

Cosy and friendly. Friendly owner and chef. definitely 1 of the best lamb cutlets I had so far in melbourne. great meatballs and not forgetting the tasty homemade garlic and yogurt dips
Ira Felinski
Interesting place. Very casual and relaxed - first timers so the chef looked after us. Everything that came to our table was really tasty, highlight was the meatballs and calamari. Best part was the bill at the end - cheap prices, so much good food for such a small amount
Valencia
Just brilliant. Koutouki Cafe - homemade, delicious and unpretentious. Unbelievably friendly hosts. Amazing, tasty, filling and warming food. Def try the meatballs and the calamari - and of course the moussaka. Take a bunch of friends and fill up on superb food at Koutouki. Great value for money!!! Love it!

Great value, relaxed casual atmosphere and good old fashioned high quality Greek food.
