Review Tofulicious - Richmond

Was walking by and saw this shop. Spoke to the owner (?) He was so lovely and welcoming!! They have an amazing variety of items made from impressive ingredients (a lot of organic, biodynamic, etc). Will definitely be back!!

Delicious, always changing vegetarian menu, plus tofu. Great variety, you always get half a dozen different flavours, hot and salads. Isn't cheap, but it is very good value

I am very lucky to have this great establishment next to us which serves so many variety of flavours and textures in one go. They operates very sustainably and everything feels homemade and fresh. Staff, very kind, friendly and lovely. A not to be missed Melbourne establishment which supply great honest food!

I finally made it there any I tried a bit of everything, it was all amazing. The tofu is absolutely delicious. Everyone is super friendly too 🙏 😊

No longer a Melbournite, it was such a lovely surprise to see this iconic vegetarian restaurant still open, especially after Covid. The vibe is still the same, the food is soooooo good. There’s nothing like it anywhere. Such yummy, unique flavours.
Sharon Neven
$13 for this tiny box of broccoli. Love their spring rolls but I won’t buy this again. Definitely felt ripped off!
Kiki
Food is great but $17 for a small takeaway box (see the sec pic to see how small is the box) is on the pricy side. Still hungry after this small lunch.
Ramy M
Food was good but, $16 for a small bowl is too expensive. Not worth

I got super excited when I was in there this evening so I ordered all the food. It was all delicious. The cauliflower beetroot balls were a must and did not disappoint. The doughnut... even tough it sounded interesting with the bean center it was so yummy! I'm saving the tofu apple crumble for tomorrow as I'm very full of yummy food!

I can't go to Richmond without going to the Tofu shop. I have been going for nearly 30 years now. It has always been part of my training regime. Wonderful authentic food made with love. Can't recommend it more highly!
Hugo Spiceland
What more can you say but thé best végétarien food in Melb for over 30 years. Make a bee line to it if i'm in Punt or Bridge road.
Kirk McKënzië
The last time I went to the Tofu shop the guy who served my girlfriend and I assumed we were from the country and asked how long we were in Melbourne for. I've lived in Melbourne since 1986. I'm not sure what that was about but I've never been back. The food is okay but there are awesome vegetarian restaurants all over Melbourne that don't assume I'm a hillbilly for no reason.

After my time in Japan I was pretty much over tofu. But the meal, a mix of different tofu and salads was amazing. Loved it so much I bought the cookbook. And David, the brussel sprouts, which I normally detest, we're delicious.
Maria Alma Ocampo
Im not fond of tofu before but after Ive tried their dish, I instantly became a convert :")

This is my best find in Melbourne !
Jenn Bartle
Love your cookbook, great work and yummy food ideas. Thank you.

The soyvlakis are the best!Whenever in Melbourne I make a trip down to bridge rd.

Best food ever..

A shop in Newcastle please!

The most fresh, delicious and convenient food in all of Melbourne, you are bound to leave full from a plate mixed of warm items. The buffet style has you choosing each elements you enjoy. While it is a great value for money ($15 for a small plate, I promise you will be full) it is an absolute go to!!

A quick dinner in a warm and friendly environment. Two of us shared a medium-sized bowl with a selection of food available at the time. The offering included rice, tofu, beetroot, broccoli and potatoes and lots more. We added two tofu slices which topped the meal off nicely. The price was more than reasonable.
Hannah
Went here on a colleague’s recommendation and was thoroughly underwhelmed. Food was nice but most of the dishes were not particularly flavourful, more what I’d expect from a pay-what-you-feel place. The broccoli & tempeh dish was very good. The real shock was in the price... a drink, a small bowl of food (no bigger than a child’s bowl!) and a spring roll cost almost $25! Definitely don’t go here for value...
Kate Dougherty
Delicious vegetarian menu that changes weekly. The concept involves picking your size and then selecting a combo of the range of dishes available that week. I went for the medium bowl ( small is way to small for a meal) and tried the tofu coconut curry, the chickpeas curry, the broccoli with tempers, the Brussel sprouts, the zucchini and peppers, the rapi salad and the tofu hummus. I loved this meal! So tasty. Will definitely be back to try the next menu. Just be aware, if you’re planning on eating in there is very minimal seating.

There’s a reason this place has been able to survive for so long. A great choice of health focused foods and staff that are interested in making it a easy experience.
Pinut Noir
For a tofu fan... this place is a gift from heaven, but with quite a price tag (especially when you basically want everything in the shop, even its cookbook!)
Kirsty Haggerty
This place is great! It’s just vegetables and salads done properly, it’s so flavourful. There tofu is delicious and if you want to buy some, you can! My favourite was the chickpea stew. So tasty.
Ignatia
I like how humble this restaurant is on the busy street of Richmond. With the warm staff, fresh and nutritiously good food, this place reminds me of my parents’ place — home. I had broccoli, fried pumpkin with mung beans, coconut cauliflower, and peanut satay tofu. Also added tofu dip and chilli on top. Yes, they all fit in the small bowl! If you’re visiting with a partner, get the medium or large one for sharing and you can have every type of dishes available on one plate.
Alex
This place is killer and no matter how monstrous your plate looks at the end of the buffet line it will all make sense when you eat . The best vego cafe in Melbourne for sure ! Prosper Tofu Shop ! Internationally !
Bigmelbappetite
Making their own tofu in house you can see why this is only one of the reasons why this place is one of Melbourne’s best vego cafes! This dish served was banged packed with flavour. Incredible 👌
Ai
LOVED THIS PLACE! So many to choose from, I ended up ordering everything. It’s good that you can have so many different flavours. They were all mixed up in my bowl in the end but it was super enjoyable. I found that a lot of vegan places are overrated but each dish I had has its own flawed and matched with every other dish so nicely (they were complimenting each other). Definitely will go back.
Demitra
The noodles were nice and the broccolli and tempeh were really tasty! Although the girl working there ruined the experience. She was rude and obnoxious and when I asked if the yoghurt dip was vegan, because I was told everything was vegan she replied with "it's yoghurt so...no" in a very condescending tone. I thought working at a vegan place you would know there are alternatives to dairy yoghurt which is why I asked. Poor form. Luckily the guy working made up for her feral attitude as he was really happy and helpful. But will not be returning and will be advising my vegan family and friends to also avoid. Not a great time. Couldn't wait to get out of there.
Kairo
My favourite vegetarian spot in Melbourne. Have never left this restaurant feeling disappointed or hungry. Every week the options change and they are always delicious with outstanding ingredients. You have to go here if you're in Melbourne. Try the mapu tofu pie too.
Veganaut
I love this place, great for a wholesome meal. If you like hearty home cooked western food definitely give it a try. I’m amazed by their tofu sauce which tastes almost like hummus but with a tofu and miso taste. So if you love tofu so much that you want to dip it in tofu, give it a try. A cute little shop, with 80% vegan choices.

ONE OF MY FAVES ❤️ <br/>I absolutely love coming here whether it be because I’m near the area or making a specific trip to come visit! As someone who is plantbased I am naturally somewhat biased in my enjoyment of the Tofu Shop (where vegetarian and vegan foods feature), but I genuinely recommend people who are not "into" vegan/ vegetarian foods to come try the Tofu Shop! It has become tradition for my mum (who is not plantbased) to come visit. <br/>The tofu shop works on a "buffet" style premise, where you pick you serving size then choose from their dishes they have for that day (menu is set per fortnightly and you can see this on their Facebook page) - although  it is much nicer than an actual buffet! You can choose from an abundance of healthy and wholesome dishes depending on your mood. <br/><br/>Food: 10/10<br/>***Portion: 6.5-7/10<br/>Service: 8.5/10<br/>Ambience: 7.5/10<br/><br/>AMBIENCE/ SERVICE: The shop is very small (can fit about 10-12 inside the interior?) but generally a lot of people come and just get takeaway and there are some wooden picnic styled tables out the front that accommodate for extra people. During busy periods it can feel a bit pokey, but for me this isn’t a problem and adds to the ambience of the shop, especially in this case where the emphasis  is on the food and not the "aesthetic". I generally visit for early dinner so have not been during a busy period in a while. When the shop isn’t bustling I have Malcom -the owner- will come talk to customers about his ethos and the background of tofu international, he has even let my mum and I sample new products such as the tofu miszuki (vegan feta!) and green tea which is a lovely touch. <br/><br/>FOOD: Whilst some say vegan/vego dishes are an acquired taste, I still would encourage traditional meat eaters to try the tofu shop!! The menu changes fortnightly and they cook a variety of dishes which are labelled accordingly to accommodate for food in tolerances. <br/>I would say the food is typical of an Asian/ Moroccon/ Middle Eastern cuisines, as with most vegetarian/ vegan based eateries. Dahl’s, simmered tofus and curries are complimented by fresh salads and spiced rice’s as bases. My favorite dish is the broccoli and teriyaki tempeh (which appears often). And the tofu dip is amazing 😍! Accordingly, Tofu really is the highlight of the shop, it’s amazing that they make all of their tofu products on site (from tofu dishes to tofu feta and desserts). If you’re not into tofu then there are still a variety of dishes that don’t include soybeans in the ingredients :)) I have bought the cookbook because I love the food here so much. <br/><br/>PORTION: My only somewhat negative feedback is that the portion sizes vary depending on who serves you/ are not consistent between visits. I have sometimes left disappointed with the portion size I have received, especially if I see the person behind me get significantly more (because I love the food so much! #jealous!) <br/>I would personally say the portions are on the smaller size  to be honest- especially if ordering the small plate, which I feel like could be a tad bigger as compared to other standard small sizes. The large size is more true to a standard large portion. <br/><br/>You can choose from a S,M,L size (or pay $1 extra on the M/L to share from memory) and then basically you choose the dishes you would like and they fill the plate/bowl accordingly to the size you chose. <br/><br/>The small is ok for lunch as I personally don’t have a big appetite during the day. It’s about the the size of a rice bowl you get in Asian restaurant that is filled to the brim + a bit more on top. <br/><br/>For dinner my mum and I generally get a medium to share (which is priced as M +$1 for sharing) Personally, I leave somewhat satisfied but could always eat more, so I’m thinking of upgrading to the large to share or even just having the medium to myself. I guess it depends on how hungry you are feeling on the day. <br/><br/>Although the portion size/ inconsistency would normally annoy me, I love the tofu shop so I always forgive them on this :)<br/><br/>EDIT: been back twice since I reviewed this and may happily say that portions have very much improved (ordered large to share omg huge and yummmyyy and also had a small which was decent sized for that less hungry day!)

Thought I was cool n dandy finding this lil sexy tofu spot along the retail carcass that is bridge road. Turns out it’s been here for 40 years. Typical millennial aye. Good food tho.
Don'tMessWithMyFood
I would be a vegetarian if I could eat tofu all day. Unassuming little store along Bridge Road, you'd easily walk past it and not give it another thought. Big Mistake!<br/>Don't expect much from ambience, cutlery, setting or display. That's not what they're selling.<br/>Wholesome, fresh, vegetarian options jam packed in a take away box for $13.50.<br/>What I love: there's always new options and new flavours. Heaps of fresh looking greens on display. <br/>Select chilli, ginger and tofu or yogurt dips at the end.<br/>Yummy, in my tummy :)
Qun Dian Zhang
Friendly staff and great variety of food to choose from. Food was healthy and the dishes change weekly which means theres always something new to taste. Can't wait to go back!
Nathan
I found tofu shop international from an Sbs show that had a segment on it. <br/><br/>The restaurant has a lovely vibe and the staff were super friendly. <br/><br/>I had a plate with all of the vegan options which was delightful, The food was fresh and hit the spot. The bill was a little pricey but i can't fault the food. <br/><br/>Would love to come back. <br/><br/>
Alice
Very upsetting experience !!!! <br/><br/>I brought a takeaway meal and began eating it in the shop, as I have a short break I like to eat abit then take the rest to work.<br/><br/>Was told I could not eat inside the establishment whilst eating there own food in the takeaway container I was served , however I could eat outside ! Felt like a animal.<br/><br/>Not sure the reason why. Is it because the dine in bowl is a few dollars more ? <br/><br/>Extremely rude.
Bella
So good!!!!! Always an interesting and delicious menu, leave feeling fresh and happy every time. They make their own tofu and it's the tastiest out~ perfectly cooked ~ and they make the best tofu slices and soy ice cream !! Very friendly manager/owner (?) and nice service in a cute shop. Can't recommend enough.
Catherine MacLean
I was absolutely ravishing when I arrived and the food certainly looked incredibly enticing. They have common allergies labelled on their weekly menu (no two weeks are apparently the same), but they didn't have refined sugars listed. When I enquired, the chef himself came out to talk me through everything which was great, but it effectively cut out half the options which was disappointing. Being so hungry, I bit the bullet and went with the medium plate despite it being rather expensive at $17.50. I don't know if I was underserved or my appetite was just so large, but I was still extremely unsatisfied afterwards; so much so that I had to buy a "second dinner" about 45 minutes later! What I did have was delicious- loved the flavours- but just didn't get enough for what I paid and not enough variety.
Peter
The bowl in which they served the food was poorly shaped so all the food was just mounded on top of each other and mixed! Service was poor, got hardly good size portions of food and the taste was bland, will not return
Mo
I had a share plate for $27 which if you're in a couple then it works out to less than $15 per person. The neon signage is cute and eye catching, and there's both indoor and outdoor seating. Staff were really informative, offering to help with dietary requirements and naming dishes (but I couldn't remember the names of all the delicious food on the plate unfortunately). Food was really good and very healthy, lots of interesting textures and flavours, well worth the money. Would eat here again.
Moof
I had wanted to go here for a long time and I was not disappointed. Food was great, plenty of choice but get there early. You dont come here for ambience or a romantic date, especially in winter as there are limited seats inside so be prepared to sit outside, perch on a stool or do takeaway. It is not cheap but it is good value when you look at the quality of ingredients. I could eat here everyday as the menu changes constantly.<br/>I will be back.
Purple Anise
Love this place! A humble, family owned business specializing in vegetarian and vegan food. The food is simple but delicious, and the staff are always friendly and courteous. They make their own tofu which can be purchased. <br/><br/>Pros<br/>• friendly, polite staff<br/>• delicious food<br/>• many vegan options <br/>• reasonably priced<br/>• takeaway available <br/><br/>Cons<br/>• decor is somewhat dated
Vee
Best vegan experience ever! The style allows you to have a bit of everything which is nice. My favourite was probably the Lemongrass Tofu and the Brocolli. I also loved the Sweet and Sour Cauliflower which not everyone loved. The zucchini and greens stir fry was nice and fresh. All dishes were cooked and seasoned well. We shared the Large plate ($26) between two people, had 3 scoops of ice cream ($5) and were stuffed. A must try is the Pandan and Coconut ice cream. It's very similar to Gelato Messina's. The Matcha Green Tea was surprisingly too strong in flavour. Would definitely come back very soon. Really want to try the desserts there.

Really tasty no-guilt food, great for take away. I love the vibe and the good food combined. I would love for it to stay that way. I always look forward to what my partner would take home from this shop as they change up the menu every now and then. All tasty.
Simon
Simple, healthy and delicious; brown rice with various side dishes. <br/>Can be an everyday dinner option. Easier than cooking and more nutritious.
Ling
Good selection of tasty, fresh tofu dishes and sides, tad pricey for the servings but would return again. Also recommend the sot icecreams. Friendly, helpful staff :)
Nelly
How do I write this without getting sentimental? Bugger it I just can't. <br/><br/>A massive thank to The Tofu Shop! My mother stayed at Epworth hospital across the road. So we would nip across the road to bring her something nice to eat instead of the dreaded hospital food.<br/><br/>Tofu shop you were our saviour for over 4 months. The staff were just gorgeous and got to know us very well. I even spotted a couple of you at Mum's funeral. There are no words, but thanks again guys for the fresh food, the support and just being who you are!!!
Kat - Oats And Cheesecake
This was a completely random pit-stop of mine while shopping as a tourist but what an interesting find it was! I tried three different varieties of tofu creation and was impressed with all of them (and surprised I managed to save them until I got back to the hotel). Even if you're not vegetarian or vegan, I think you'll be impressed with their creativity - because guilt free doesn't have to mean boring!
Carrie Lee
went here for the first time today and I was impressed. unfortunately didn't have time to dine in but got a variety of dishes in the $12 take away box- so many yummy flavours that went really well together and loved how there are so many dishes with a variety of ingredients to choose from and tried some stuff I've never had (tofu hommus!) had a pineapple tofu cake as well, was okay but a bit bland, but will definitely be back to try more stuff
Gigi
Unpleasant experience and shop owner was rude, gave poor service and very unprofessional, ranting about competitors and made us feel very uncomfortable. Have been regular customers for years and would travel across town to come here, unsure what has happened but menu has become limited and after this experience, we won't be back.
Jenny Talia
Ok first of all, food was ok. Not amazing but edible. <br/>Now the service... the old craggy lady (who I assume was the owner) is quite something. We ordered the "self-serving" plate and  when we requested a spring roll which, according to her, could not fit on the plate....   NOW if you didn't want us to have the spring roll please do not lie to your customers because you are you just being petty, desperate and deceitful.  We would've paid for the spring roll separately had she not being so impolite and contemptuous towards the customers.  Apparently I've heard similar stories from my friends too about the awful service.  I hope it goes out of business very soon.
Mistystan
How did I not know about this place?. Really, really tasty food and lots to choose from. My only mistake was choosing the medium bowl as I was so full I could hardly move. I'll be back!
Poppinso
Tasty. The food here is really good, super tasty and there is heaps to choose from.<br/>The bowls arent always filled up to the top, I expect the whole bowl to be filled if Im going to pay $17.50 for a medium bowl.
Olive Sundays
When I heard there was a place that had tofu in almost every dish I was excited. I love tofu! I’ve heard good stories about the Tofu Shop International for a long time so it was about time we visited. As we walked in we were greeted with a warm welcome from the owner Malcolm who had opened the shop over 30 years ago. When he heard it was our first time at the store he gave us a quick intro on the background of the store and guided us through the menu options. He really made us feel at home.
Vivi S
Past the Treasury and Fitzroy Gardens, and Yarra Park too, is Tofu Shop. A small vegetarian shop with neon signs. You choose the size first, then what seems like as many choices as possible to fit into it. The friendly Japanese lady wanted me to try everything, so I said, yes, yes, yes, to all. Why not? Yum to all. Tofu Shop 78 Bridge Road Richmond, VIC
Hide And Seek
Authentically eco-friendly, the Tofu Shop manufactures its own tofu on site, recycles and composts wherever possible, and shuns meat. But dining here is never earnest or preachy – it’s a high-spirited celebration of green cuisine!<br/>
WTYT
i like tofu, i like vegetarian meals, their desserts also looked very enticing – but i think the price is a bit steep for what you get, so i dont know how often id be returning back here [like vegetarian? try out vegie hut also! review HERE]….but its good, so try it out if u like soy;)
Mochii
Overall, the ‘main’ food tasted yummy but it is on the pricier side for the portions.
Sofia Levin
Every hipster and their fixie opts for a vegetarian diet these days, so I thought I’d share my favourite vegetarian restaurants in Melbourne.
Katherine Chiu
...really popular with all the vegetarians. Here your dietary needs are taken into account and they do everything gluten free and some things nut and dairy free. Everything here is organic. The most popular dish is the soyvlaki but I wasn't in the mood for this. I really wanted to try all the self serve dishes on display. In which I did and I thought wow.
Gastrology
Having been around forever, Tofu Shop International has a very loyal and devoted fan base. The food here is guilt free and delicious and seems to make the idea of vegetarianism not so bad after all.
Sweet And Sour Fork
There was ginger tofu, curry tofu, soft tofu, hard tofu, and of course a good selection of veggies – raw, roasted, blanched, marinated – piled on top of a bed of brown rice mixed with dahl. Bonus points to the fluffy piece of deep-fried tempeh on the side.
SaladGirlMelbourne
Brilliant healthy food. Love the mixed bowl lunch.
Miki Lodewyckx
Very sad to say that Tofu Shop has lost a customer. I used to be a regular and went in today for the first time in a couple of months. The prices have gone up, it seems more to pay for the cost of the new fit out than the food. The serving sizes have gotten smaller, the variety of dishes has reduced and the taste seemed blander. I loved this little establishment for years and years. So sad to see the change.
Jessica Chalinor
Disappointing. I don't know what happened but I won't be returning. <br/><br/>Prices went up, servings went smaller and the food variety is not as good as it used to be.
Quesoquesoqueso
Overpriced and they use fish sauce???. $15 for a tub of broccoli? And the "tofu shop" isn't even vegetarian, look in the fine print there's fish sauce in a fish every now and then. Also the older male owner is super annoying and will talk at your about his half boiled hippie theories for hours <br/><br/>AVOID!
Coburg Dweller
So so so good. I love this place. That aroma that hits you as you walk in is magic. Work nearby and this is by far my fav. lunch spot. Vegetarian comfort food, healthy and delicious.
Megan.m.formanek
Veg out!. Oh my goodness. What a heavenly place to fill up. <br/>I enjoyed the food emensly. Everything was fresh and delicious. So much variety. If you enjoy a sweet try the pandan and coconut soy ice cream! Amazing.
Netty
Had an amazing lunch today. Char grilled asparagus, amazing tofu, tempeh, Dahl and veggies. Flavours that burst in your mouth and the best thing is the food is good for you. Best food in Richmond. Love it.
Pop_cut
The owner is super homophobic, not exactly the atmosphere I expected. I've been in here a couple of times over the past year, the male owner Malcom does love to talk your ear off about whatevers on his mind at the time, at first I thought he was mostly harmless and the food was relatively good. But twice now I have popped in for a snack and heard and seen him ranting at his employees about how gays should keep to themselves and it's completely unnatural for them to be allowed to marry or "parade around like they do" in his words. Not exactly the conversation I expected from such a seasoned self proclaimed "hippie." So not really a food commentary but I certainly won't be returning and risk having to be subjected to this homophobic idiot, if you have any ethics, which I'm sure most tofu-eaters do, I suggest you venture to many of the better priced and better quality vegetarian eateries in inner city Melbourne.
Lottyfarmer1969
Customer service can vary. Absolutely love the food. Tasty, healthy and amazing selections. However, as a regular, depending on the serving staff, can dampen the experience. Sometimes, not met with friendly staff. And at nearly $17 for a main, I don't feel that I should need to ask for a little more on the serving sizes I select. If I ask for broccoli and tempe.. please add the tempe. Again, often depends who is serving you. But I can assure you, I'm aware of the staff you don't want serving you. P.S. and smile whilst you're serving. It's not cheap grub.. Doesn't cost you anything to customer service in a positive way.
Danni
This was my first visit but definitely not my last! The staff were very friendly and helpful, the portion sizes were good and the food was superbly delicious.
Kosta G
Freshest and best vegetarian food I've eaten - even meals I've cooked at home. Fantastic selction of extremely delicious foods. I feel so good after a meal here.
Peter James
Good food, go here pretty frequently
A Wild Fallon Appeared
This place is delicious!! One of the best vegetarian places I've eaten at. It is a family owned business and they even make their own tofu as well so no GMO soy :)
Wallis
If you haven't been here.. Stop what you're doing and do yourself a favour! Could not fault a dish, tofu to die for, incredible flavours.. Have found my new lunchtime bliss. Fill your container/bowl how you please and top it off with mouthwatering dips. Bet you won't be able to stay away! <br/>NB: Only regret is I didn't get the large container..
Iain L Crouch
Yummy and healthy but overpriced
Mail
Great Food but too expensive. The food here is beautiful but super expensive. Takeaway container is too small. I'm still starving after paying $11 for a tiny container which was only half full.
Melbourne Foodie
Terribly arrogant owner
Info
Spot On. Always feel like I'm doing my body a favour when I grab my $11 takeaway container of goodness from Tofu Shop. I'm happy to pay that knowing I'm getting good delicious healthy food.
Kim
Amazing! Dietary stuff is listed clearly via numbers to help with ordering and the taste is beyond good.
Nacho
Healthiest meal I've had in a while, will definetly go back. Slightly pricey yet really tasty. Friendly service, no sign of rude employees mentioned in other reviews.
Roger Kaputnik
Vegetarian Heaven. We had the 25 dollar share plate with your pick of what they have cooked today. All of the dishes were great and it was very filling too. After you feel good, no horrible MSG, salt or oily 'hangover' effect which you often get from other (esp. non vego) places. You also don't get too much 'hipster attitude' which places like the Vego Bar in Fitzroy have which is big turn off for me.<br/><br/>We also bought some of thier own tofu which we will try at home and somehow resisted their yummy desserts. I guess you could say portion size isn't overly generous but I found it enough. <br/><br/>Owner is often wandering round too so if you ever want to chat to him about all things vego he is more than happy to accomodate you - if he gets annoying ask for a free sample of the tofu ice cream or something...
Bobby
People behind the counter are nice, but they don't listen. Prices are very high for the small serving you get. If you are vegan - AVOID! They just have no idea and instil no confidence in what is vegan. As a vegan, I would never eat here again. It was laughable.
Fancy
Went for my first time today - I got a medium bowl of everything for $16. Maybe it's not the cheapest place in the world but sh*t it's worth it for the food. The tempeh! And those little tofu ball things!! And I'm not even a fan of tofu. I'd eat here every day if I could.
MancinMelb
Fantastic little vegetarian cafe on Bridge Rd. wonderful selection of dishes & great value!
ButterM
Once again the Toe-poo Shop raised prices.<br/>Weighing yoghurt & attaching a price label.<br/>The only thing this place has going for them is the fact that there isn't too many shops like this around.<br/>Staff are ALWAYS rude, prices keep rising & portion sizes could feed my cat dinner, comfortably.<br/>Where's Kitchen Nightmares when you need it?
Mayahi
Food is delicious, but that's about it. Portion sizes are tiny and they have recently increased prices from $10 to $11 for a 500ml take away container!! The owner tells staff off in front of customers which I find extremely rude and unprofessional and he talks to customers for longer than he should. They go there to eat not to chat!!
Foodie Fan
NOT VALUE FOR MONEY. LEAVES YOU HUNGRY!. In the last year, prices for a SMALL tub rose from $9.50 to $10. I thought it was overpriced then but continued to go because the food was tasty (and not many other vegetarian options around). But, I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY afterwards! Not enough food; definitely not value for money! Now they have RAISED THEIR PRICES AGAIN to $11 for a small tub!!!! It's tipped me over the edge and I won't be going back and I know many other nurses at the hospital across the road won't either. Just can't afford that for lunch!
King Lobster
I got the $10 take away container, it was quite small I wish they had a larger option, the food was tasty, good flavours. I recommend eating in seems like you get more food. The girl behind the counter was friendly.
Kathee
Tofu Shop. The Tofu shop is always something to look forward to for me. It is a little expensive so I don't go often but when I go I have always had a good experience and I absolutely love the wraps...... I didn't know Vege food could taste so good until I found this place!! :0)
Alexandra Anna
Vegan friendly & delicious. Everything is fresh and changes daily and the tastes are all original and superb. This is quickly becoming my favourite eat in Melbourne.
Rachel
The quality of the food here is excellent. I love the unique flavour combinations in their fresh salads, and the tofu balls are to die for. This is a step up from your average slack-hippie-vego joint.
CamSaya
We really loved this place - great variety of dishes, they do get a bit jumbled up in your serving but that's ok! Each item had a distinct flavor. The staff can mix for you if you aren't sure what to get (recommended!). <br/>Really friendly staff, they even charged out phone, nothing seemed too much trouble. The middle sized share plate seemed great value, we would definitely go back!
Chris
Poor service. I have always found the food to be great however on my last visit the Indian middle aged lady behind the counter was very cold and particularly rude. Also seemed to be bullying the Japanese lady (who is lovely) in front of other customers.<br/><br/>The owner needs to have a serious chat to her because it is not the type of service that customers expect.
Jess Kenobi
I tried this place for the first time tonight I ordered a soyvlaki and it was DEVINE very impressed! I didn't mind paying a bit more for tasty healthy vegetarian food! The staff were nice too

Lately I have been disappointed by the staff's attitude here.<br/>Today I went in for takeaway and was told to wait to be served for 5 minutes while they "changed over the menu". The two staff proceeded to ladle food out of bain maries and put new dishes in while four of us waited for takeaway!<br/><br/>This pkace

Always enjoy the food but I have never seen a staff member smile. Pity. Friendly service would really make this place great.

Great food but overpriced for serving size. Rude owner.

Not good anymore. Used to love going to this place but staff are extremely rude (especially the owner's son) and food is not only overpriced, but very salty. Wouldn't waste another cent at this place given the many options around Richmond.

Good food, rude staff. I'm glad I'm not the only one who has experienced the rude owner there! I work near Bridge Rd so frequent this place often but won't be going back even though I love the food. The owner gave me a 10 minute lecture on being vegan, surprising given this would be a high percentage of their business. Just to note - I didn't make any comments to him to incite this, my friend merely asked if an item was vegan/dairy free. I completely respect their freedom to put up whatever menu items they want (I frequent all kinds of restaurants including omni restaurants) but I would have thought that given their reputation they would be more tolerant of those following a vegan diet. Completely angered by my experience there (also they get orders wrong a lot and often are understaffed) and will not be returning.

Great food..minuscule servings. Absolutely love the food..BUT THE PORTIONS SIZE?! Overpriced for what you get..

I like this place. Food is fresh and the tofu is amazing. I tried every variety, favourites being the agedashi-style fried silken tofu and the star anise infused tofu in a delicious herbal broth. The varieties of vegetables are decent, tempe with broccoli, broiled zucchini, stewed tomato/ragu ensemble...but the tofu is clearly the star. The staff are warm and helpful, and the owner (whilst opinionated), is a hoot! Just don't tell him you're vegan unless you have a spare hour to kill. The soy icecreams are a delight. Good honest food that is tasty and healthy. Yummo! Thumbs up.

Brimming Conscience (empty wallet). This is one of my favorite places to eat. I only get there every so often because it keeps cafe hours on a shopping strip (not the most convenient) but am always happy to catch it when I can. I LOVE tofu so suffice to say an entire shop devoted to it would make me happy. As per some negative reviews, I suspect it is so good because they do salt it silly, the staff can be a bit grim sometimes (do they detect a carnivore in their midst?), and it is expensive on first glance. However, I get the medium bowl for $16 and always have a hard time finishing it. I would suggest you give it a try...

Great everyday vegetarian food. Lovely ambience.

Mixed overall good experence. It is a bit pricy- $11 for small bowl but concept is fantastic that you choose from about 6-8 different vegetarian options with sauces and condiments. Some days here are sublime-- with food inspiring me to almost become vegetarian!, other days it is sort of average. The quality of ingredients is good and i like that they try different dishes, so there is variety etc. im not such a fan of sitting in close proximity of mirror! good gf labelling

Delicious but expensive. I have been going here for a decade. Same surly, know-it-all owner the whole time. But the food is fantastic.<br/>The size of your portion will vary widely depending on who serves you. The price of a medium bowl has almost doubled since I started going here and to be honest, about $15 for a bowl of veggies, is starting to stretch the budget.<br/>The place is very small and gets very busy and you will be shoulder to shoulder with strangers as you chow down your food at a bench. Not the kind of place you can/will want to linger after you finish your food.

Disappointing. I was recommended to this place for lunch by a friend who works up the road. So do I.<br/>Now Bridge Road boasts many great little cafes, pubs and takeaway places, but nothing like the Tofu Shop. I was excited to collect a healthy meal from here.. everything looks delicious but its not as affordable as it looks. They also have no eftpos & the service was horrendous. I was greeted by a young, snobby girl who was rude & stuffed up my order. I put that aside, took the meal back to my work place as there was no space for me to sit down & eat it there. Once I delved into my "healthy meal" I found every single option, including the sesame seeded tofu & potato-like salad & chickpea dahl mixture with some greens totally bland and disappointing. Wont be going back.

The food was nice, but it is not inexpensive. Please add an extra dollar sign to it.

Expensive? Seriously???. My family has been eating here for years, and we think it's fabulous! And good value. I suppose if you only basing it on quantity, then maybe you would be disappointed, but for my money I'll take a whole variety of fresh, wholesome tasty veg. dishes any day. Just work out how much it would cost you to make all those different dishes at home - there's no way you could beat it and meet the freshness and quality.

Not impressed. Sorry, but $10 for a small container of food - that's overrated. Plus, it's not that great. Average at best. The aroma whilst walking by is better than the taste, to be honest. But, they're chocked with the nurses from over the road. That's the only reason the keep existing.

Great place to satisfy a tofu craving. Food was really good. A bit pricey if you get a medium size bowl or a large one. The small size is a good size for a quick lunch. Small was $10. Will definately be going back!

Favourite. The best place to go for a take away vegetarian meal, all their dishes are so tasty and theres always something different to try everytime i go, ive never tried the desserts but they look yum! only bad thing i would say is the service has never been amazing.

A good find. I have eaten at many veggie eateries and this place would rank among one of the better places to eat veggie food. There is a good variety and the food is very enjoyable to eat. My only small quibble is that I think they could cut back on the salt a bit more. I am sure many people like salt in their food. I don't like any at all or very little. This is the only reason why I would not eat there daily. Eating salt is a significant contributor to acquiring high blood pressure which then leads to health problems including stroke and dementia. Still I always look forward to my next meal there.

Crap. I hate tofu shop- the staff are awful, the food is full of salt and completely unhealthy, I honestly have no idea why people go here!

One of my favourite places to eat! Great vegetarian food with lots of variety. Big fan of the tofu dip.

Like a vegan, touched for the very first time. I stumbled upon this tiny place when I was shopping on Bridge rd. Hungry and deprived of vegies, I decided some vegan/ vegetarian cuisine was on the cards. BEST. CHOICE. EVER. The ma po tofu, eggplant curry, soy yoghurt, chickpea salad, lentil daal and cauliflower curry were all sensational and the best thing about it is that you can mix as many dishes as your bowl can fit!

Love,love,-really tasty. This place...were do i start ?<br/>you can feel when yr eating the food, that yr getting nutrition.<br/><br/>my body craves this place.<br/>the food is soooo healthy and fresh.<br/>it should be under heritage listing !.<br/>thkyou tofu shop owners and staff for encouraging healthy diet/ living...

Delicious. The best vegetarian food I have ever had. I eat again and again at this little hot spot.<br/>This restaurant is a must try (even for meat lovers).<br/>The best way to go is to take away a container, with a little bit of everything. I love the tofu dip and chilli on top (there are other toppings to try). <br/>Eating in costs extra.<br/>YUM YUM YUM.

Pure Bliss.. I guess many have walked past this place and not thought much of its subdued presence or been turned off by the tofu name. I like both these traits and have been eating here for six or so years. Im quite surprised ive not given a review here earlier as this is hands down for me the best food in Melbourne. Big statement but I have not ever left here wanting for more and felt better for eating here every-time. <br/>Every dish available is cooked to perfection, the flavours are always right and just as they should be. I often think i should just eat here everyday and be done with. What surprises me is that there are not more places like this?? Am i just not looking, let me know if im wrong.

Ah, tofu.. A great stop if you are missing the food co-op from your uni days. :) Just wish they had more seats and were open more often.

I am not vegetarian but tried this place. Fantastic. Really enjoyed it. Surprisingly tasty given no meat. Will be a regular here.

$16for a medium is a bit expensive for casul dining, the food is not bad, overall it's a nice spot to go when u don't feel like cooking and don't know where to eat

Food's good but too pricey. Finally tried this place after failing the first time (closed on Sundays). Went there for dinner, It was quite pricey at $8 for a small bowl, $16 for a plate, around $24? for a large plate. What I did like was that I could choose as many available options as long as it could fit in the bowl. The food also tasted good. We also tried the Peach Crumble and the Malted Soy ice cream. The peach crumble was too sweet for my liking and we didn't really like the icecream, had an odd aftertaste.<br/>Overall, I did like the main food but wont be returning as portion wise it's too pricey.

NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER!. I have just recently turned vegetarian. <br/>I have been scared to try anything new.<br/>I decided today to get some food for lunch from a place i had driven past a million times on my way to and from work.<br/>Everytime I drove past it i thought it sounded terrible "tofu shop", I imagined a plate full of just plain rubbery tofu.<br/>To my suprise the variety there is awesome. They have so much to chose from and not just plain old tofu!<br/>I got a mix of vegies and rice and yes I did venture out and got some tofu, all of it bursting with flavour. <br/>My lunch was delicous, It was a good feeling eating out as a vegetarian for the first time. <br/>It also helped that the staff there rocked and had such great attitudes.<br/>This experience makes me proud to have become a vegetarian!

The food speaks for its self... What a delight!<br/>You pay for the size plate you want, pick the flavours your after and choose from an assortment of condiments like tofu dip, olives, pickled ginger and chilli to top it all off.<br/><br/>id have to say the Tofu Shop is my most regular, favourite place to eat and after finishing up with a fructose sweetened desert or raspberry/rosewater soy ice-cream it has me skipping out the door guilt free.<br/><br/>they also offer cooking lessons which i am keen but yet to do..

This Bridge Road casual dining spot has been in business for around 25 years, before tofu/vegetarianism became trendy
