Review St James - Richmond

Joe Kenny
Really nice food and huge portions! I had the cauliflower fritters and it was delicious. Such a good vegetarian option and they had a few others that I was considering too. Coffee was bomb, service was prompt and friendly, and I think it was pretty good value too. We sat inside but there’s outdoor seating too. It’s law has busy when we walk past and now we know why!

Thoroughly impressed with this place . Coffee was absolutely on point and the food was delicious too. We had the smoked pork Benedict and I loved it . Priced reasonable well also. Service was very friendly & efficient. I can definitely recommend this place .

Such a cute cafe! Richmond vibes, friendly staff and the food was super yummy and really fresh. Coffee was also great - which is so important for a great brunch place - should definitely give them a go - I know I will be back! Thanks team, Laura x

Great place for breakfast and lunch. Delicious coffee and the staff are super friendly. They’re also open late on Fridays and Saturdays now for dinner and cocktails.

Hands down the best coffee and service in Richmond! The team at St J are always super friendly and make you feel like the cafe is an extension of your own home. Must try dishes are the chilli scrambled eggs (someone bottle and sell that chilli jam ASAP!) and the banana pancakes if you’re craving something sweet. The outdoor tables are perfect for people watching along a bustling Bridge Rd, whilst enjoying a cheeky breakfast mimosa. Thank you Jag, Angela, Yuri and Arpan.. Bridge Rd wouldn’t be the same without you guys 💕

We've been to St James in the past and always been impressed however there seems to have been a serious drop in standard. My partner and I had brunch there yesterday with our toddler and while the coffee was good, the berry smoothie had a strange artificial taste to it. We ordered the cinnamon french toast as well as scrambled eggs with potato rosti and bacon. The french toast simply wasn't french toast, but FRUIT bread cooked in butter and cinnamon sugar. There were three pieces of bread stacked on top of each other however the middle piece was raw, they weren't soaked in an egg mixture and fried off like you would expect of "french toast". The cream was whipped cream from an aerosol can which was horrible and in my opinion does not have a place on a $20+ breakfast in a Melbourne cafe. The scrambled egg and bacon was fine and while the rosti had good flavour, it was far too oily. The vibe has also changed, it used to have a warm, friendly local cafe vibe as now it has a colder, cafeteria-like vibe. We won't be going back.

Really great place to eat. Very welcoming and friendly. Extremely helpful with food ordering considering we came in with 3 different food requirements...gluten free, vegetarian and vegan. Got to eat a Parma which I haven't had in such a long time being unable to eat gluten and it was delicious. Really enjoyed and would highly recommend people try this place. Will definitely visit again

We had a delicious breakfast. The staff were wonderful and were able to cater for my strict gf diet and ensure everything was safe for me to eat with my Coeliac disease. I would highly recommend. We didn't have to wait long at all for our meals. But I am quite happy to wait when I know they are taking care with the meal prep in the kitchen whilst catering for everyone's needs. When you have special dietary requirements you really appreciate the efforts the wait staff and kitchen staff make.

Such a disappointment. Went for dinner. The menu looks really good. I ordered the lamb shanks and my partner ordered the surf and turf. Soggy tasteless food that made you just push the plate away. Even the side of fries was soggy and most unenjoyable. No offer of desert or coffee as well. With so many great restaurants and cafes along Bridge Road now you can't survive if you are dishing up such poor quality food and service. The restaurant was only half full but was very noisy. Which is the result of the poor design. Won't be back.

Healthy quality food at a reasonable price and the service was great! I definitely recommend this place to anyone. The coffee was great. The manager and the owner made the experience memorable.

Went to try the dinner at St James as I am a huge fan of the breakfast and it did not disappointment! Amazing food, great service and such a lovely experience all together! The coffee and salted caramel tart are worth a try highly recommend!

Very unfriendly staff! Not a smile on anyone's faces to start with. Also, the lady serving my friend and I didn't understand English very well (we were patient but it got to a frustrating point for us both). I ordered the pulled pork meal asking for extra pork (turned out I got less pork then my friend that ordered the same meal). Fairly disappointed with the flavours and found it quite over priced! Desserts were also overpriced starting around $9 each. Look... I'm totally all up for healthy and paying a little extra for quality...but not for this place. Won't be returning

I would love to giving a glowing review of this showed so much promise besides the friendly staff. Our food took over 40 mins to arrive whilst my partners food was good. I had ordered the pancakes which where hard to find on the plate amongst the melted ice cream and the mountain of berries which looked like a dogs breakfast. Very disappointed now I am hungry and looking for something to eat .

I came here for Sunday brunch and was very much looking forward to beautiful food and delicious coffee as the place had so much promise. It seems adding items to your order here is just too much though - our waitress was incredibly rude who rolled her eyes at us a number of times. The food took forever to come out and my friends order was wrong. When the waitress was told this, we were met with more eye rolls and then very obviously started to complain about us to the kitchen staff. When we went up to pay, I mentioned the poor service to the manager who shrugged it off and didn't even apologise. For a new place with so much potential, the food is average, it is overpriced and with TERRIBLE service. I would give this give this 0 stars but there wasn't an option.

Coffee was great. Service great when ordering coffee...bit slow to order the food. Had to gesture to wait staff. The meal was ok, although the poached egg was hard boiled....not runny. I had the pulled pork , would have been better with bread and some seasoning. I should have stuck with the smashed avo, bacon and eggs.

They served salmon as sea bass and made me to pay that. The dish was supposed to have saffron potatoes, pumpkin purée avocado mousse. All of the components were missing. They brought the components of dish by the end of dining. Then they made me to pay for wrong dish. They said they can give only 30% discount. Terrible!

I was very much looking forward to a nice Sunday brunch and a catch up with some gal pals, unfortunately our dining experience was ruined due to picking St James as the place to go. The food was overpriced for what it was, and the staff (one waitress in particular) were extremely rude and disengaging. There were a couple of extra things we wanted to add to our meals and we were made to feel like a burden, along with a lot of sighing and eye rolling. I think it's safe to say we won't be returning and would definitely not recommend this place to anyone. When telling the manger afterwards he didn't really seem to care and didn't even apologise, not acceptable!

I don’t recommend this restaurant at all. Tough chorizo. Leather steak. Had to ask for butter for bread. Eggs not cooked as requested. When you complain all they say is have a nice day...

Ordered the Schnitzel with coleslaw and chips. Arrived with something like a garden salad. I asked about the slaw and was told that the menu was changing. Wasn’t offered any other options. Ate the chips and 1/2 of the schnitzel which needed the dressing off the slaw. Manager was aware of issues but when I went to pay he asked how everything was like there were no issues. I explained about the dish and he really offered no explanation. He then tried to charge the full amount and when I said no he offered a 10% discount. I then explained that I would only pay 1/2 of that dish to which agreed with s snide remark that I am always right. There were other issues (ingredient substitutions) with my wife’s meal. Will never return.

If you're a Paleo lover like me or even if your not, I highly recommend St. James Richmond . The food is absolutely amazing, the service is above & beyond and the design of the restaurant is stunning with a modern / industrial aesthetic. The overall vibe of the restaurant is relaxing and super friendly! I also loved the fact that I could have anything I wanted on the menu and not just have one or two options like other restaurants being Gluten and Dairy intolerant! They definitely cater for everyone's needs! I look forward to visiting again and again!! Instagram:- dream_interiorz_au samantha_lea_sherry the_paleo_squad

The best paleo pancakes I’ve ever eaten! Light, fluffy, delicious!

Been going there for the last 8 months now, my fiancé started the paleo diet and that's the place to go, good menu and good coffee.

Staff lovely, attentive, efficient, personable. Unfortunately part of the fish was blackish/blood coloured and had a very unpleasant metallic taste. I lost confidence in the dish and returned it half way through, explaining my concerns. I was charged full price and two hours later I have diarrhoea. I have spoken to the manager who had been kind and professional. Actually looked like a really interesting dish but 3 stars seems reasonable. Minus one for not immediately comping a returned dish and minus one because I have a plane to catch and I'm not excited about doing that sick. Retains 3 stars for handling the phone call well. Kitchen, if you're reading this, lift your game. Something failed.

I am obsessed with St James, a paleo inspired cafe with the best coffee in Richmond! I always opt for one of their breakfast salads with salmon. I love the paleo bread and how fresh the food tastes. There is so much flavour in each dish and variety on the menu.

I also love the banana pancakes and waffles (special) which are gluten and dairy free!

It is an amazing cafe to visit!

What you should order: shakshuka and coffee!
•
Review: This cafe is so value for money - if you have @entertainmentau voucher, you score a 25% off. I would also come back even without the discount, which speaks volumes about this place!

Plenty of customers kept streaming in this beautiful and busy cafe, and we were fortunate to immediately get a table. Location is probably a factor - this cafe is located along Bridge Road which is home to plenty of gyms! Some memorable moments from our brunch here!
1. ☕️ I am always a fan of places that roast their own coffee beans, and St James is one of them. Usually good brunch comes at the expense of average coffee, but that does not apply here. Was v happy with my flat white!
2. 🍳 the shakshuka egg was legit for many reasons. Main factor - I wasn’t charged extra to add chorizo because this version comes with lamb meatballs. The shakshuka itself was amazing - wish they gave more bread to soak up the delicious sauce. My partner told me this was one of the better shakshukas he’s had in a while and I must agree
3. 🦀 I went with one of their specials - a soft shell crab croissant Benedict. Couldn’t fault the freshness of the soft shell crab, and the portions were generous too. Thought the green hollandaise sauce was a bit more watery but otherwise I enjoyed the dish!

Summary - good brunch option, great vibes and efficient service!
*
Taste: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ambience: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Presentation: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Price: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

HIGHLY IMPRESSED with St James!!! first reason to be so impressed, is the variety of gluten free options on the menu! secondly, the service is amazing, fast and friendly!

my friend and i tried some yummy dishes! i had the middle eastern cauliflower fritters and we both tried the berry and pistachio hotcake! the fritters were so crunchy and flavoursome, i really enjoyed them to start with! then i moved onto the hotcake and wow!!!! it was the most AMAZING gluten free pistachio and berry hotcake EVER! i never get to order and indulge on anything like this when i eat out...but thanks to St James, i was able to enjoy this fluffy goodie and i didn’t feel guilty

thanks for a lovely experience , i’ll be back for some more delicious meals!!

Came here today for lunch. We had the coffee , fresh leaves chai , wagu burger and the fried chicken taco . Coffee was fantastic! Food was delicious. I especially love the waffle fries that comes with the burger. Taco tasted freshly made and I love the fried chicken.

Immediate attention by the St James folk and calm understanding when I absent-mindedly tipped a full coffee cup over the table, the floor and of course myself. No trouble or angst on their part in cleaning up, and a fresh coffee “on the house”. Most appreciated by this (somewhat embarrassed) customer.

St James is a lovely cafe located on the busy Bridge Road in Richmond. The venue is spacious and chic, with a peaceful ambience. It was a nice day so we opted to sit outside. The staff were very friendly and helpful, and made us feel welcome.

There is quite a variety of choices on the menu, but what really stood out to me was how their dishes were accommodating to many different dietary requirements - gluten free, lactose free, vegan, and in particular, paleo. I don’t really see many cafes that offer paleo options on the menu so it was really nice to see this here!

For drinks, my friend had an almond latte while I had in-house ice tea. It was very refreshing, light, and the perfect accompaniment to my brunch.

I decided to go for the Blue Swimmer Crab Omelette, and I’m so glad I did! The omelette was actually baked, so it had a different texture to your regular omelette. There was plenty of shaved parmesan on top, yet it did not taste heavy. In fact, it was a very light dish, which I really enjoyed.

The Pancakes were amazing! The banana pancakes were so moist, and full of banana flavour, and the banana ice cream was very refreshing. It was not overly sweet, and you can definitely taste the freshness. Even after having most of this dish, I did not feel sickly or too full at all. Not only was is delicious, but also very pretty too!

Overall, we had a wonderful experience at St James. The food is very light so you won’t feel too full afterwards either. However, if you’re a big eater that also means you need to order more.

Thanks for having us!

Taking advantage of the beautiful sunny Thursday this week, I attended St. James in Richmond. A large cafe with a industrial interior, filled in with exposed brick walls and stylish furniture. It’s large window front allowed the natural light to really liven up the entire space.

From the minute I walked in, the staff were extremely accommodating and lovely to chat to. I started the brunch off with an almond milk latte, which was lovely and creamy. The coffee was smooth and rich. While my brunch partner went for the refreshing iced tea beverage.

Looking through the menu, there was a large variety of choice. I also noticed that most of the dishes can be adapted to be Paleo, Gluten free or any other dietary need, if they weren’t already. I think this is a unique and poignant selling point for this cafe. It made it extremely easy to eat any dish on their delicious menu.

My brunch partner and I decided to go for three dishes. I, personally, went for the Terracotta Eggs, which were baked in Napoli sauce, chorizo, garden vegetables and organic goats feta. I got this with Gluten free toast on the side instead of the sourdough. It was one of the best egg dishes I have ever tasted. The vegetables were extremely fresh, packed with flavour and not too heavy on the stomach. These were balanced out perfectly with the cheese and chorizo. I also loved the fresh parsley and dill that was placed on top, as it really elevated the freshness of the dish.

My partner decided on the Blue swimmer crab omelette. This came with asian herbs, caramelised onion, aged parmesan and a stunning house made chilli jam. She could not stop taking about how good it was. It was a refreshing change from the usual omelette and was presented with perfect execution.

Together we shared the Pancakes. I am still stunned that these were paleo and gluten free. They tasted too good. The banana pancakes were served with coconut yogurt, banana ice - cream, compote berries, roasted almonds, fresh strawberries and a organic maple syrup. They had the perfect balance of sweet and fresh elements. The freshness of the strawberries complemented the sweet berry compote to create a dish full of flavour notes and depth. I would highly recommend these. They are not your average pancakes, I promise.

Overall, I was presented with amazing customer service from all staff and had a wonderful experience in this beautifully decorated cafe on the busy bridge road in Richmond. Do check it out if you have the chance. I for sure, will be returning soon.

really beautiful place and atmosphere, the presentation of food was very nice but the food is SO bland. me and my friends ordered oreo pancakes and Benedict's.

A great healthy paleo cafe can be found on Bridge Road in Richmond! I was wowed by the amazing service received from the moment I walked through the front door. We ordered the eggplant chips, pulled pork benedict and blue swimmer crab omelette.

The eggplant chips were super crunchy as described on their menu and went lovely with the aioli dip provided. The omelette was bursting with blue swimmer crab which took us by surprise as we know some places can be quite stingy with seafood in dishes. Only downside of this dish was it’s presentation. Didn’t resemble anything we had seen ok their instagram accounts. Lastly we tried the pulled pork benedict, the hollandaise was smooth and silky and not overpowering, the free range poached egg on top was absolutely devine especially accompanied with the sweet potato.

I’ve been looking for a paleo cafe for a while and this one meets all of my expectations.
Great healthy food without trying to be to on “trend” or ridiculous
The food is VERY good. Staff are always lovely too

The best almond milk (and honey) coffee I’ve been able to find in Melbourne

I don’t normally care enough to review places but this place is GOOD!! 10/10

(Not all the food is paleo. You just have the choice of paleo if you want it)

Calling all #paleo brunch lovers! If you haven't found an amazing, paleo cafe, then this cafe is the one for you!

Loved the interior decor & the space felt like it wasn't cramped which I really liked. Sitting outside on a sunny day is perfect for enjoying a coffee, people watching or brunching!

LOVED the coffee!! I'm calling it, this is the best flat white with soy milk I've EVER had! The blend of beans comes from all over the world! The coffee wasn't bitter, good amount of froth (well there shouldn't be much at all but you'd be surprised as to what people consider a flat white...) and the drink coffee was creamy.
The house made raspberry iced tea was sweet & refreshing on a warm Autumn day.

The food was all paleo & delicious.
The benedict not only had juicy pulled pork, but included some of my favourites (sweet potato, avocado & broccolini). It was topped with a perfectly poached egg & creamy hollandaise sauce.
The salmon was soft with crispy skin & on top of so many greens including asparagus & kale which made my tummy happy.
The omelette was very unique, filled with blue swimmer crab & a strong chilli kick to it.
The paleo pancakes topped of the meal perfectly, which were nice and soft. It was covered in sweet banana 'nice-cream', berries & maple syrup. The perfect paleo pancakes.

Super friendly & served with a smile. More than happy to help from menu recommendations to being in blogger videos.

Really enjoyed our visit to St James, I'm not usually one to go for the healthy route, but the food here is so good! Definitely coming back for some brioche French toast with the poached pear. Staff are also super lovely and enjoyed the vibes & atmosphere.

How good is eating out?!

Oh wait, wait! Let’s rephrase that - how good is eating out in a place that uses whole unprocessed foods and has an ethos based on all those big mouthful health words such as pesticide, grass-fed, free-range and wild-caught?

Well, probably all those words don’t mean much to you. Or maybe you’ve seen them at the supermarket of your health food store and just think that they are a scheme for companies to get more money. An advertising fluff. Or is it?

I don’t agree with practices that induce suffering on animals and I am a huge defender of pressuring food companies to adopt higher animal welfare standards. EVERYONE, can choose food more wisely and support foods that has been grown/farmed in an ethical manner using methods that nourish the animals and the environment.

And St James Richmond has created a paleo based menu based on ethically good food. In one word: paleomenal 👏

Here’s what we had:

- Acai Power Bowl: very interesting bowl! In regards to the taste it was outstanding 👏 I love when acai is mixed with berries as it creates such a delightful fresh tasting blend and it has an effect similar to little crunchy pieces, which obviously increases the thickness of the smoothie. The colour of the blend is also a very vibrant pink which can easily be confused with a pitaya bowl but the taste is surely more sweet! In regards to the toppings, it is beautifully presented and the mix of berries with the kiwi works really well. The granola is way more than approved too - just the right amount of sweetness and crunchiness - and I like that it doesn’t overpowered the taste of the smoothie blend, with for me is definitely the highlight of the bowl. I wish it was slightly bigger but I have to say that the portion is good.

- Pancakes with Banana Icecream: I have a few things to say about this meal. There are two types of pancakes - some that are thick and fluffy and others that are mushy, flat and seem a bit undercooked. Both of them can be quite delicious regarding the flavour but when it comes to the consistency and overall experience or the meal, usually there’s nothing better than diving into a light, fluffy stack of pancakes. On this case even though the pancakes had a great banana flavor without being too sweet or not enough sweetness to it (it was definitely a good natural sweet taste!) they had a bit of chew to them and they weren’t as enjoyable as o would have expected. Over-mixing the batter is definitely what happens here creating the flat looking pancakes so I would suggest that next time, mixing it less time will help the pancakes to be lighter and much more enjoyable. I would also like to have the option of pouring the organic maple syrup instead of it being already mixed in the dish - not only would it give the costumer the opportunity to actually enjoy the true flavour of the pancakes, but also create that epic pouring shot for the foodies! The compote berries and roasted almonds mix really well here, and even though I’m not a huge fan of most coconut yogurts, the spread combination turned out to be delightful and extremely well achieved in terms of consistency and taste.

- Crunchy Eggplant Chips: this meal was shared by the other people that went with me and even though it looked quite appealing to me to try, due to the meal nothing being dairy free, I wasn’t able to try it. However the meal didn’t live up to the expectations and we even reported that to the owner, Jack, that the slices of the eggplant were too thick and quite hard to chew. As a friendly and constructive criticism, having thinner slices and creating a batter that doesn’t include cheese could be something to considered to improve this dish.

- Heirloom Tomato Stacks with Basil Oil: disposed with a good layout, the slices of cheese, looked rather thick and creamy, alternating with some tomato slices and dressed in a healthy basil oil. Again, I didn’t try this meal because of the dairy but it actually looked quite pleasant and it was thoroughly enjoyed by the other people. The sourdough toast was nicely presented too and it seemed a good dish overall.

- Blue-Eye with Spanish Crumbs: again, due to allergens in the meal I didn’t have the change to try this meal but from the feedback received it was well achieved. The crumbed fish was crunchy and flavourful and it was nicely accompanied by a big favourite of thick fries and tartar sauce.

- Confit Duck with Lentil & Orange Salad: I didn’t eat this meal but it was nicely presented and from the feedback I got, the meat was flavourful and the lentils paired really well as a healthy and unusual side to the meal. I liked to see the special touch with the orange slices that I believe that deliver a subtle hook of bitterness that highlights the flavour of the duck, but even though it looks like a balanced meal, it didn’t seem to be a very big portion.

- Sunrise Smoothie: when it comes to aesthetics, it definitely wins! The pink colour along with a slice of grapefruit on top makes it very tempting to try (plus grapefruit base smoothies are rare to find!) and the overall feedback was that this was quite a good choice. The fact that it has banana and raspberries definitely adds sweetness and freshness to the grapefruit and I would definitely ask for this type of alternative smoothie in a cafe!

- Berry Bliss Smoothie: beautifully presented and with fresh blueberries. I asked for no chia seeds and no almonds and wish there were other options to add to the smoothie as the thickness could be massively improved here with other alternatives such as frozen bananas or frozen berries, similarly to the Sunrise smoothie.

- Made in House: quite an interesting drink. It is as refreshing as a lemonade would be and you definitely get that ‘light and freshness’ feeling from the drink. The lemon grass ginger along with the cranberry and raspberry iced tea creates that slightly bitter touch with the right amount of sweetness. I would consider adding some coconut flakes to this drink to make it even more enjoyable and aesthetic but overall it’s definitely an interesting experience!

- Almond Latte: executed by the owner itself, it was divine 👏 delicious taste, perfect amount of foam and good latte art. I was very happy with this drink and I think that obviously coffees say a lot about how skilled and how much potential the venue has.

Service is fast, even on a busy day like it was, and that’s something this venue should be proud of! The staff is friendly and ready to accommodate your requests promptly, kindly accepting some alterations to the menu due to food intolerances and allergies.

We had a good time at this venue and left some kind suggestions to the owner Jack about certain things to improve some of the dishes and some modifications that could be considered (such as having more dairy free/vegan options).

There were a couple meals we didn’t try but were also interested in, such as the iconic St. James Bircher and the Pan Fried Wild Salmon, and Jack also mentioned that they making some changes to the winter menu - I would definitely be interested in visiting again and trying those items from the current one and also see what new dishes they come up with! A pumpkin spice oatmeal or even a fig and taro oatmeal would certainly be something I would be curious to see how this venue would create because I’m sure it would fit really well on their health based menu and ethos 😊

Underwhelmed.

It just could have been better. I came in and was seated, I was waiting for a friend. I was asked if I would like coffee, I said no I would wait. My friend arrived, we decided what we wanted for food and drink. It took us 30 minutes to be noticed to have our order taken. I tried to get someone’s attention on multiple occasions. I don’t like to go up to waiters as we should be their priority and not forgotten about. The waiters were friendly none the less.

Once out order was taken we waited 40/45 minutes for our food. By this point I was pretty hungry.

I ordered the grilled salmon with a poached egg. The salmon was well cooked, there were a good amount of greens but the quinoa just lacked in flavour. It was bland and boring. In fact I felt the whole dish could have done with a pick me up. It did look good though.

My friend ordered the panzella salad which wasn’t really a salad and could have definitely done with a bit more green. Well actually a lot more as it had none. Not saying a salad needs green but a lot of the time they need to have more veggies, complex carbs and protein rather than what that was.

I honestly wouldn’t go back 6.5/10

Great modern and well-lit dining space; comfortable and inviting. Decent selection of dishes on their menu and fair prices. Attentive service, great coffee and food. Would visit again readily.

The venue is open, modern and clean with friendly and welcoming staff.

We had the vegetable fritters which had a little crunch on the sides off the fritters but once that goes all you get is mush with. Flavours are there but the mouth texture of this reminiscent of baby food. The potato rosti had a nice contrast with the crunch of the rosti the saltiness of the bacon and the creamyness of the eggs however needed more hollindase sauce to bring it together.

The coffee here is inoffensive with no noticeable notes which can be seen as good for people who have just started coffee but pretty mediocre for regular drinkers.

All in all a pretty OK fall back venue if you can't decide on where to go or just want to do a quick catch up.

Ambience and service is really good. I really liked the Chilli crab omelet but the avocado dish was below average.. It didn't have any flavor to it. Loved their coffees. But their hot chocolate was like Milo drink..

We expected a good breakfast but was very disappointed instead. The Fettucine Marinara was overcooked spaghetti with pieces of seafood...did not look appetizing at all. Lets put it this way....we are not going back to St James.

Great staff, delicious meals (smashed avo and breaky bowl). The star here is definitely the coffee, included in Specialty Coffee Melbourne for a reason
This place is worthy of its rating if a bit underrated imo. Expect those Malvern prices though!

Excellent venue with fresh big meals that are excellent value for money. You won't go hungry in this place. I had the quinoa salad with roasted beetroot, broccolini and chicken. It was amazing. So filling and fresh. And huge! The calamari looked amazing and the eggplant starter was so tasty. Burgers and really good too and served with sweet potato fries for something different. Service is is great and if you're in for lunch it's efficient service but you don't feel rushed. Great for large groups, couples, or on your own for a quick bite. Open for breaky too.

St. James located on busy Bridge Road in Richmond is a modern cafe serving restaurant quality food in stylish interior. St James features a full brunch menu along with hearty dishes from pasta, to burger and risottos, the array of dishes is tremendous.

From the numerous cafes located on Bridge Road, St. James stood out due to its large glass windows lighting up the cafe creating a vibrant inviting atmosphere perfect for a late Sunday lunch. It was moderately busy with a steady flow of customers, mostly families dining in at this very family friendly cafe. We where greeted by overly friendly waitresses who seated us in the corner right next to the window facing Bridge road, ideal for people watching. The large menus where placed in front of us and we ordered drinks promptly being the usual long black along with an iced mocha with sadly no ice-cream as they didn’t have any :( The lengthily menu fitting all dietary requirements to a tee with a palo inspired theme, deciding what to order was challenging.

Our drinks arrived and the coffee was decent. The long black was thick and bitter but lacked texture. The iced mocha was excellent though even without the ice-cream. Perfect ratio of chocolate to coffee flavour with the most divine indulgence of thick chocolate syrup coating the glass. After clenching our thirst we where finally ready to order opting for the famous St. James bircher and the naughty beef burger with chips.

As we waited for our meals we observed the dishes that where being quipped out around us all looking elegant and well plated respecting the proudly sourced fresh produce. When our dishes arrived we where left speechless. The bircher looked to gorgeous to touch and the beef burger was oozing its meaty goodness all over the board. The beef burger featuring grass fed beef pattie with lettuce, tomato, beetroot, bacon, egg and mayonnaise accompanied with chips and added chilli jam was a classic dish knocked out of the park. The chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The beef patty lacked seasoning but was cooked to moist perfection. The egg and bacon provided substance and the refreshing beetroot sealed the deal for an utterly perfectly crafted burger. The addition of the chilli jam complimented the beef and made for a great dipping sauce for the chips.

The famous St. James bircher muesli made up of berries, coconut organic yogurt, chia, flaxseeds, organic raw nuts, poached pear was a burst of vibrant texture and flavour. The perfectly poached pear was central to the dish soaked in aromatic spices. The base of the dish being the bircher was littered with chewy creamy oats, dried fruit, strands of coconut and seeds. The addition of the light fluffy coconut yoghurt ensured it wasn’t to sweet and the berries provided a pop of acidic flavour. The nuts where plentiful adding a crunchy aspect to the outstanding dish.

St. James is an excellent cafe run by amazingly friendly staff, serving high quality food in a family friendly comfortable environment. The coffee could be improved but the accommodating staff and hospitable service certainly ensures customers leave with a full belly after a pleasant dining experience.

Having a large family and needing a place that takes large bookings last minute without needing a set menu is hard to find, not to mention that caters to all the fussy eaters, kids and isn’t expensive. Emailed this place Saturday evening for a Sunday midday booking and someone.. I believe the owner called within 30 minutes to help me out, booked a table for 18. On the day we were 20 which was easily managed as we got an extra table of 4 for the kids. If you take a look at the menu you will see your not short of choice, the guys in our group only want burgers whereas the ladies want brunch so this was the perfect place. The service was efficient, food came out around the same time for the whole table and we didn’t wait long for drinks. You won’t be disappointed

2.5
This should be getting a better rating however two failures on the one visit really disappointed.
Unclean cutlery should not be allowed to happen and mediocre staff attitudes have no place.
Coffees are good.

It's a busy cafe with a large menu. The MOFO hot chocolate does not contain refined sugars, so it's not too sweet, which was nice. I also enjoyed the chilli jam that came with the omelette.

Well, as a pancake aficionado, I can say confidently that the banana pancakes here are some of the best in Melbourne. Juicy juicy freshly cooked pancakes, real organic maple syrup, home made berry coulis with crumbled crushed nuts, a novel scoop of ice cream granita made entirely from frozen banana and a scoop of coconut yoghurt. Unfortunately I ate them before I had a chance to take a photo. Divine!

This is a nice cafe on Bridge Road, w friendly service from the staff. This cafe has a lot of seating inside and outside in a courtyard. Great for summer.

I ordered a piccolo latte which was alright, it had a good crema and the flavour was ok. I didn’t eat here as I was just after a coffee but the food on display looked good.

Overall it’s a handy location.

I have walked past this place so many times but only finally got to try it out today; and I am so glad that I did.

On first inspection, the tables and water glasses are clean with the menus neatly placed. The floors and bench tops are also clutter-free and very clean as well. The staff greeted my and two friends warmly and gave us just the right amount of time to peruse the menu and order food.

I ordered the St. James Bircher which came with coconut yoghurt and a poached pear on top. The bircher had an assortment of berries, nuts and seeds - plus big chunks of macadamias which is always a bonus for me. It is extremely filling but so delicious. There is a strong cinnamon flavour throughout the dish, but the addition of the cold and creamy coconut yoghurt really breaks both the flavour and textures up. There were also pomegranate tendrils sprinkled all over which were greatly welcomed.

Another friend ordered the acai bowl and practically inhaled it. I too tried it and thought that it was very icy but had a strong raspberry flavour. However, it is refreshing but would probably be better with some coconut yoghurt.

And the third friend ordered the pancakes. She couldn't finish them as they were very sweet and filling, but she thoroughly enjoyed the meal nevertheless. The coulis is the factor that makes it quite sweet, and the pancakes themselves were cooked well and work nicely with the yoghurt. It is a very decadent dish I think.

I truly love this place - from the interiors and staff, to the food itself. I definitely wouldn't hesitate in returning, and will recommend to anyone!

I’ve only been here once but from my experience, I liked it - A good place to catch up with friends or chill. I found the service wonderful and the atmosphere lovely. The staff were attentive as well. The food tasted fresh and healthy. The drinks were delicious too.

I’ve only been here for coffee but their chai latte was delicious. Really well balanced and not too strong. Great atmosphere and staff were lovely and attentive.

Came here for lunch. Standard Melbourne brunch menu with some pasta pizza burger items added for lunch. I had the steak sandwich but beef was really tough, flavour didn’t stand out either. Friend had the potato hash which looked nice. Coffee was ok. Yeah, nothing really stood out, food, service or decor.

Had the GO PRIMAL (add some feta) which was very good. Everything on the plate was delicious, The chill jam is spot on! Excellent OJ as well (even with a weird straw)
Very nice fit out, service efficient and friendly. Definitely worth a visit.

Very good food and great service. Awesome spot in Richmond. Jack went above and beyond for us and we would certainly recommend this place to everyone.
Tried this cafe for the first time this morning and was extremely disappointed. We went for breaky but after looking at the menu there wasn’t much that took our fancy - fair enough not their fault. I ordered a coffee which took a long time to come out considering the place had more staff than customers. I couldn’t drink the coffee when it finally arrived... very weak and tasted awful. The staff were very slovenly like, no energy like they couldn’t even be bothered talking to us. When paying at the counter for our coffee and “freshly squeezed” orange juice it came to a $1.20 more than it should have been, we weren’t told or made aware at all of any surcharge so I questioned it and the guy lifted up a menu and pointed to where it says the surcharge in the smallest font ever... a little reminder that you guys are charging a surcharge would have been nice before I tapped.
Would not recommend this place to anyone, worst ambiance, brain dead staff and a rip off.
Steph
Great food, your typical brunch menu. But felt the price was not worth the amount of food served. Our average cost for a dish and a coffee per person ended up being $30 but didn’t feel overly full afterwards.
Quality of food was really great though, just not sure if it’s worth the trip in a suburb that’s filled with cafes.
It is nice however, to sit outside and dine :) definitely the heart of Richmond to relax there with a coffee.
Chefosaurus
On a beautiful autumn day this is the place to grab some brunch. Good cappuccino with a decent quality cocoa topping. After an error with my order that was quickly fixed - bacon, poached eggs & avo were all great. Good vibe, good prices and easy access with regards to parking.
James
Over priced and bland. Had the “peri peri chicken burger” on the specials which was a very bland thin piece of chicken that came with cold and soggy chips. Inexplicably refuses to split bills!
ET
Had one SERIOUSLY good steak here a few weeks back. Friend had smashed avo and was chuffed with that too.

Great cafe. Friendly staff. A gem on busy Bridge Rd.

Had dinner here tonight. Starts with an $8 happy hour cocktail mojito which was ok. Followed by lamb salad which was awesome and a few glasses of the Grampians Shiraz which was surprisingly good! Service was attentive and easy! Food came out very quickly. I’ll be back for sure.
Hello. Imnikki
Firstly I cannot thank the lovely waitress enough for informing me, as soon as we sat down, that we have 2 minutes left before happy hours end. $8 Aperol Spritz and $5 eggplant chips for the win!

The paleo-focused menu has something for everyone, and me, being on a spur of the moment health kick, ordered the quinoa salad while my partner had the linguine marinara. Beautiful and vibrant flavours from both dishes, and we must commend the seafood that were cooked to perfection. The linguine was a bit under-cooked, but nothing overly serious to warrant a complain. Same goes for the latte; the foam was a bit flat, but the brew was decent enough to save the day.

Went to St James for brunch on a very balmy and scorching Sunday afternoon. I ordered the baked eggs and my partner ordered the chicken Parma.

The coffees arrived quick! As much as the Chai Latte was powdered, I enjoyed it since it was creamy and frothy. The latte was good too.

The baked eggs were well cooked and contained carrots, chorizo, goats cheese with a side of sour dough- out of many baked egg dishes I’ve had for brunch, this is one of the most balanced! Almost all cafes that do baked eggs use Napoli sauce and it can very overpowering (and salty) but St James balanced it well. I highly commend this dish :)

Service wise was good! Staff were attentive and easygoing. To top it off, we used the entertainment voucher for a discount, it was all hassle free 👌🏻 Would recommend!

I went in yesterday with a friend yesterday. My friends ordered the pulled pork benedict and I ordered the vegie omlette.
Both meals looked amazing!
My omelette was very nice and after our meals we both had a coffee which tasted great.
The service was professional and prompt. I will definitely be returning and I highly recommend St James to my friends.

AS RAW AS IT GETS!

I purchased a Gaytime “raw cake” after a Christmas dinner on Dec 1. The next morning, I took a bite off the corner and horror unfolded: The entire cake was covered in mould. It was absolutely disgusting. Had the chocolate not broken off, I would’ve consumed the entire mould colony and no doubt this would’ve made me sick!

Grossed out and unsure of what to do, I contacted their management regarding the issue; only to be offered a replacement dessert plus a free coffee - an offer that I, unfortunately, was unable to accept. They even suggested that it might be their supplier. Perhaps so, perhaps just sheer ignorance of basic food safety - it’s really not my place to comment. Regardless of who’s at fault, that much mould certainly didn’t grow overnight.

Unsatisfied with the response, I asked for a refund. 4 weeks later, here I am still waiting for a reply. I don’t normally write bad reviews - let alone horror ones like these - but after my traumatic experience, I felt compelled. Be warned of how “raw" their raw cakes are.

$11 is a hefty enough price to pay, but for a mould crust? I’ll let you decide.

Coffee, food and service is always consistently good every time! Always a good start to the day having breakfast here, however the dinner is also fantastic!! Great job guys :)
Overpriced. Small servings. Bland food. Took over 30 minutes for food and coffee. Don't split bills. Over charged my credit card. Only positive was the friendly staff.

St James is the place to go for lovers of clean eating and paleo inspired food! The freshness of all the dishes left you wanting more. The team at St James are passionate about creating delicious and healthy food. Can’t wait to go back!

Liked their coffee and tasty brunch. Was seated outside and service attention could have been improved. Nice atmosphere in a good location on Bridge Road.

We went here today, the staff was really lovely and friendly.

The coffee was great and juice was very fresh just perfect for a hot day in Melbourne.

We had three dishes and all of them were generally pretty good. We love the pan fried wild salmon - SOOOO YUMM!

However, the french toast could’ve been a bit better. Perhaps it lacks the sweetness from the maple syrup. The steak in the Go Primal dish is a little bit dry for my liking.

Overall, we still had an enjoyable time here.

In the heart of Richmond, amongst the various eateries on Bridge Rd, sits a café with a bit of a twist. The menu at St James is completely paleo-inspired, and consists of all of the Melbourne favourites we’ve come to know and love (smashed avo, pancakes and pulled pork benedict, etc), with the point of difference being the use of unprocessed, pesticide-free, free-range and wild-caught ingredients designed to emphasise the ‘healing power of food’.

We were warmly welcomed by our host, Sebastian, when we arrived and we couldn’t wait to check out the menu!

For the drinks, we decided to try out a couple of the smoothies rather than our usual juices, and we weren’t disappointed.
The ‘Cheeky Choc’ consisted of 100% raw cacao, banana, coconut milk and choc protein, and the ‘Berry Bliss’ had blueberries, almond milk, maple syrup, chia seeds and almonds. Yuuuuuum! Both smoothies were creamy and decadent, and offered two completely contrasting flavours. The cheeky choc was more on the bitter side due to the use of raw cacao, whereas the berry bliss had that delicious fruity sweetness without sending us into a sugar overload. Both were delicious and catered to different tastes.

We decided to be a bit more experimental on our visit to St James and chose a couple of dishes we would usually bypass in favour of more common menu items. One of those dishes was the veggie omelette with oven-baked roasted balsamic zucchini, capsicum, red onion and asparagus served on avocado puree with roasted tomatoes, crisp kale and crumbled feta. The omelette itself was light and fluffy, and the roast vegetables were so delicious and full of flavour! The addition of avocado puree with the fetta and roasted tomatoes created a creamy texture which was juxtaposed by the crispy kale chips. Overall, we were so glad we decided to try the omelette out- it was healthy, fresh, flavoursome and more-ish!

The next dish we tried was the aesthetically stunning Acai Power Bowl, with coconut protein Acai berry sorbet, almond milk, mixed berries, banana, kiwi, toasted coconut flakes and crunchy granola. The acai sorbet itself was a good consistency- not too runny and not frozen solid. The bowl could have been a bit sweeter (clearly one of us is a huge sweet-tooth), but the addition of the overflowing and vibrant fresh fruits created a nice balance of flavours. The granola had the perfect level of crunch and overall, it was a lovely dish.

The final dish we tried at St James was one that we’ve always wanted to try but have just never made the time for. The terracotta eggs, which were baked in a Napoli sauce with chorizo, garden vegetables and organic goats feta alongside some paleo bread, is one of the best dishes we’ve ever had (and we’ve had a few in our time). It was just perfect! Hearty, healthy, full of flavour and absolutely incredible, the eggs were baked to perfection. The mixture of chorizo and vegetables with the rich Napoli sauce and creamy fetta added a great level of spice and texture to the eggs. A special mention needs to go out to the coconut-based paleo bread, which was thick, crispy and the perfect spoon to scoop up our eggs with. We were unbelievably sad when the plate was cleared, but it just means that we’ll be back for more!

St James is a lovely and welcoming café with a passion for creating delicious and healthy dining experiences for their customers. Each dish is meticulously crafted to display the best that Melbourne has to offer in regards to unprocessed wholefoods and fresh produce and meats. Sebastian and his team have worked hard over the year St James has been open to create something truly unique and to ensure that they cater to all different tastes and dietary requirements.

Overall, the food was delicious, the service was excellent and we can’t wait to go back and try more on the menu!

I always get my coconut cappuccino at st James, is the best in Bridge road! Yesterday I decided to take my family there for dinner and I was amazed by the variety of gluten free options. I have ordered a porterhouse steak, under suggestion of the waitress and it was the best steak I had! Perfect cook and taste. The rest of my family ordered gluten free seafood linguine and pizza. Everyone fully enjoyed it. The locations is modern and comfortable, good relaxing spot for dinner. I will definitely go back to try the rest of the menu!
( high recommended the raw dessert as after dinner treat, yummy)
Lovely place, really good coffee and great atmosphere.
Been going there for over 8 months now. My wife was in a paleo diet for a few months and St. James is the place to go for healthy food.
Sweets options are so good is hard to choose

Plenty of seats in this popular, light cafe. I was very well looked after by staff and the food was served quickly. The menu is very varied with all dietary requirements (refined sugar, gluten, nuts, dairy) considered. I was excited by the 16 hour pulled pork hollandaise, a paleo option, and it was very tasty, but I was left unsatisfied. I didn't really feel I got value for money, but maybe it was just the dish I chose. Would consider returning, and would consider building my own breakfast instead.
Dina Kerr
Speedy service. Excellent coffee and a very diverse menu to go with it, freah ingredients despite beung slightly overpriced, kid friendly. well worth a visit.
Sam W Baines
Absolutely terrible. Horrendous service, wrong coffee orders, undercooked/raw baked eggs. Not even two slices of bacon being served as a side. Will never be back.
Mimi B
Possibly the worst service in melbourne. Wrong coffee, forgot the replacement, completely raw eggs, came out to ask if "I was sure I wanted to cancel my raw eggs" - no apology. Never going back. Also horrible coffee for the rest of the table...
Nikki
Too be 100% honest wish I could do a 0 and then I think that would be too kind for customer service I received from who I believe to be the owner which makes it even worse , he should know what he did when he refused to recognise my toddler as a person and allowing no space for her even with a half empty establishment ... thanks but no thanks will never dine in this venue EVER!! My friend is so appalled who is a regular and has no kids she will never return either! Think parents out there should know what this place is about!!

Was here yesterday for Father's Day. Fantastic service excellent food all family was happy.
Thank you very much for the amazing experience.
Coffee as well was made how have to be done .

Good environment and food however the service and staff seems a bit lacklustre. Probably the best brunch option on Bridge road. Conveniently located across the street from richmond market so it's a great choice Saturday morning. Coffee is decent. Highly recommend the terracotta eggs 👍👌
Kathy23
Super expensive and tiny portions !
The menu is comprehensive, service is average.
The extra change for GF bread is $3 and its supermarket bread !
Lisa Austin
Good quality of food. However for the price paid, the quantity of meat served (on several occasions) were soo little that we were still hungry. Ordered eggs with bacon today and served 2 tiny pieces of bacon. A more generous serving will be great
Heidi
Had a lovely lunch with a girlfriend on Saturday at St James cafe, an amazing find in the entertainment book! I had the smashed avo on paleo toast with bacon and a poached egg. I really enjoyed the paleo toast in particular, it was really tasty and crispy too! My friend had the salmon and it looked so pretty!
Good Food, Good Mood
Not to be mistaken with the Saint James in Malvern. Ordered the baked eggs which was super healthy and had cauliflower which added texture. Fresh juice is always a bonus.

An English themed cafe with the Melbourne Twist

As Always i started this meal with a flat white, and it was a good one strong and a good quality bean used, it was then time for food and am Avo dish with poached eggs well its really a no brainier ! This was full of flavor served on a wonderful bread and the addition of Bacon was so worth it. Eggs super runny just how i like them.

Matt opted for the Beno, full of pork and a hollandaise sauce to top it. I only tasted this dish but it was flavorsome from that mouthful. We also shared the Fish finger sandwich! taking me back to my childhood + some gourmet and its the product that was delivered, warm fresh and tasty great bread for the outsides, light and fluffy.
Super Fresh melting fish what more could you ask for?

I need to add a note here, they have a hidden court yard at the back super cute and great on a warm day! we were the only ones out here so if you go in i would highly recommend asking for a table out there.

I Dined here a while back now with Foodsformatt, One of the Contributors of the Eats by donutsam Blog, on an invitation which was a great experience and so much fun

Restaurant Type : Brunch Cafe

I have been to st jamed few times as I live close to it..
I find the coffe always really good as well as the service..
Waitresses very attentive and smiling..:)

The Place is very nice! interiors and exterior as well, modern and cozy..prices are okay also!
To try!!

My friend told me about the fish finger butty and I wasn't disappointed. Fresh fluffy white bread, creamy Mayo and crispy home made fish fingers. I had to try the black pudding and it was excellent - salty and rich! Nice work St James.

Not sure what all the fuss is about overpriced and Luke warm drinks?
My wife and I have been coming to St James Richmond at least once a fortnight since opening and in each occasion it's been good! Staff are very friendly and the food is great! Not to mention the coiffee is good too. (There own blend) Today we both shared one of our favourites the pull pork benedict and the spanner crab omelette. Well done guys see you soon again.
Ethan
Got our orders wrong. Drinks were mediocre and lukewarm. Refused to allow a split bill. Don't go here, waste of your time and money. NOT RECOMMENDED.
Poodlelove
Had a savoury french toast on special as one of the waitress recommended. But it didn't workout well with my taste. It was weird flavour.. Couldn't even finish half of it! And it is overpriced for what you get.

As someone that lives quite close, I really wanted to love this new cafe - so convenient and the menu sounded great. On my first visit the service of the floor staff was great - friendly and polite. They were apologetic when I found the dried orange in my cereal was mouldy. They gave me my coffee for free. The attitude of the owner/manager left a lot to be desired. Barely an acknowledgement other than to thrust it in my hand as I left. Giving benefit of the doubt I returned a few weeks later with a friend. The food and floor staff were great - but again the owner/manager was just rude - berating the staff in front of customers and we were given a hard time after waiting twenty minutes when we changed our coffees to take away because we 'messed up the system'.
EmLou86
Went to St James for Saturday brunch. I had the special, smoked salmon eggs Benedict on a potato rosti. The rosti was so dense and tough it was like eating a rock. The other meal, pulled pork Benedict, was bland and served on a bed of vegetables which lacked any sort of dressing. It was unfortunate as we wanted to try somewhere new but we won't be going back.
Paleoqueen245
My friend and I came into St James on Sunday, after seeing a few things on social media I thought I'd give it a try.

Albeit it was busy - it was a Sunday and it was hot out, but unfortunately for all of the patrons as well as the staff - it was hotter inside than out. Customers fanning themselves, staff running around sweating, and god knows how the kitchen would have felt.

We asked to move outside a few times, but it seemed that was everybody's idea, finally we got moved outside after we finished our meals. The food was nice, but not for the price. $20 for two slices of toast, some avocado and ONE egg. My friend ordered the fruit salad and for $16 there was no more than 10 bites of fruit.

The sign on the window that read 'air conditioned' was very inaccurate and perhaps should be removed.

I was very underwhelmed (and over heated) with my experience at St James.
Kim Truong
Situated conveniently on Bridge Road close to my new residence I decided to venture here for lunch today.

We popped in around 1.30 for a late lunch and I was a bit surprised it was fairly quiet. Ordered an iced latte which could've been a wee bit stronger but I didn't dislike it. I had the terracotta eggs with paleo bread in which this was quite a hearty meal in itself.

This is definitely on the slightly more pricier side of cafes Ive frequented and wouldn't be upset if I gave this a miss next time. Not to say it wasn't good but it wasn't memorable.

@twogoodtoresist
St James is a beautiful cafe- from exterior to service, food to coffee- they really have it all! Inspired by paleo eating, St James caters to all dietary options and have plenty of organic ingredients too! The owner is lovely and accomodating beyond words. Both dishes we had (the avo smash with smoked salmon and the pan fried salmon) were delicious. Huge portions, flavoursome and tasty! They also grind their own coffee and it's delicious! We really can't fault this place and the dessert cabinet (catered by conscious cravings) is a must try!
Abi
Food was good but a couple of things weren't 100%
Cappuccino had no chocolate on & was almost cold.
Toast come out with no butter on so I had to ask for some.
My dessert I got from the counter still had the plastic around it which I had to ask her to remove.
Other then that everything else was good.
Debbie Thomson
Terrible! Ordered the St James Way (smashed Avo with poached egg). Frozen not fresh avo used (can tell - it was mush) less than a gram of feta and it was $20. Rubbish! Never eat here!
SmokinAussie
Very polite and helpful service. I left a bigger than normal tip for that alone. The coffee was very good. Family I was with having been an ex delicatessen owner was very particular about that. Big tick for the coffee.

I was let down by the Terracotta eggs. A really tiny dish for the money. 2 baked eggs in a seriously acidic and sloppy tomato base with maybe a chunk of chorizo sausage or two. A thin dry sour dough slice of toast on the side. Butter? Nope. None on the plate and none offered. A flawed dish. No balance. No thought.

The Salmon on the bed of kale and broccolini fared a lot better in taste, but balance again was out, this time in volume. The modest but nicely cooked salmon looked like it was falling off the side of a mountain such was the size of the salad serving. The dressing was ok.. A little bland and actually benefited with a bit of acid from, guess what? The sauce from the Terracotta eggs.

Overall a bit hit and miss and as such, a bit pricey. Back to the test kitchen I feel for this menu. I'm unlikely to go back as in Melbourne, you can get great coffee almost anywhere and I don't really want to eat here. Sorry. So much choice in Melbourne.

I visited St James on Grand Final Day with a friend. After the staff umming and ahhing over whether they had a table available, we were eventually seated and told we had to leave at a certain time as they had a booking (which I fully understand!) The wait staff were quite brusque and took ages to take our order, then it took a long time for us to be served - they had forgotten the bacon on my order so I had to request that again. The food was good, and I understand that they were busy and possibly stressed due to Grand Final Day, but overall I don't think it was worth it.
Honest Food Lover
Servings a bit small for me (somehow the food description is bigger than the meal), noisy new space with a big TV on the wall (?). Not my kind of place, but would suit those who like a new, shiny, consistent kind of cafe. And the staff were very professional and attentive.
Neil McKay
Such a disappointment. Went for dinner. The menu looks really good. I ordered the lamb shanks and my partner ordered the surf and turf. Soggy tasteless food that made you just push the plate away. Even the side of fries was soggy and most unenjoyable. No offer of desert or coffee as well. With so many great restaurants and cafes along Bridge Road now you can't survive if you are dishing up such poor quality food and service. The restaurant was only half full but was very noisy. Which is the result of the poor design. Won't be back.
Tayla Colbeck
I have been here about five times now. When it's busy, food isn't half as tasty/presentable same with the coffee but if you can get there during the week when it's less busy the coffee is pretty damn good and I'm very picky with my coffee! They roast it themselves. The bacon is superb, came out crispy when I asked for it to be and it's great that there are a lot of gf options. Now the staff, you are greeted by one at the door then another shows you to a table. When it's not busy they are just kind of standing around not being very attentive or observant of the customers walking in or out. But I guess that's what you get with teenagers unfortunately. The owner is extremely friendly and attentive which was great to see, even asked how my meal was when I couldn't finish it all. There's another girl there that I assume is the manager because I see her there all he time and she is also really friendly when you do get to talk to her. Would be nice to see her be able to interact with customers more other than the others. I would probably give a 5 rating if they had more experienced staff.
Nick
Came here few times, be honest, staff are friendly but coffee just normal (just average not good not bad),food is OK,there are many coffee shop on bridge road, not recommend you must come to try,but if you hanging out this area, you can walk in to try.
Jenny
The service was great and friendly. However, the kids pancake was burnt, the homemade ice cream on top was more like shaved ice. The French toast has only one slice of bread and it was swimming in the sauce. The crab omelette has so much water in it and tasted so rubbery. But the coffee and orange juice was nice.
KITCHFIT
This little cafe is great. Beautifully displayed food, great menu and friendly staff.
Came here with a friend for breakfast and quite enjoyed the food. The coffee was pretty good too.
Eggs were cooked perfectly but tomatoes were a bit oily for my liking.
Overall a great place to stop for brunch. I appreciate the effort to detail this place strives for.

Excellent seating and ambiance for St James. Ordered the St James Way, a poached egg on avo and toast. I thought the ratio was off in that they served 2 slices of toast, heaps of avo but only 1 poached egg which was disappointing. The brekky itself was nicely presented but nothing to rave about. Coffee was ace!!
Muse
went for brunch. we had the pulled pork and the salmon. the pulled pork was really nice and so was the salmon. the salmon fillet though was tiny which was disappointing and the amount of vegies excessive to the point that the salmon looked lost when it should be the star. an easy fix though. the coffee was very nice and good service.

I'm a local and I've gone to St James a handful of times now. The good news is: really nice fit out, nice coffee, nice person at the door. And that's where it stops. Take away coffee - lids not put on properly so it spilled on me. Waitresses ignore you, takes too long to order food. Menu options are great, food is passable, however not worth going back for. Acoustics need a big improvement, can hardly hear people at your table speak.

The staff were friendly and reasonably attentive but to food let them down. Limited menu and not anything to go wow about.... my choice was ok - very fresh ingredients, but not the right combo to get the flavours to go wow!

Coffee was great and very friendly to dogs.

With the good intention of supporting a local business, I went to St.James twice. It was Groove Train before St.James took over. St.James is a completely new and different business to Groove Train and they are not related in anyway.
My first time was on a weekday. I had to interview some people so I thought of St.James as a good spot for that as I've never been there and it will be a good opportunity to experience their customer service and food. I was welcome by a friendly girl at the door but was shown to the table inside by a different waitress. St.James is a pretty big venue with lots of tables indoors and outdoors. They weren't busy the day I went. I did not want to eat anything as I was interviewing different people so I decided to order drinks. The waitress came up to me and asked to take the order. I ordered the drinks and then the waitress in a very rude tone asked me "Aren't you going to order any food?" I replied no just the drinks. Then she abruptly pulled our menus from the tables and just walked away looking annoyed. I did not have time to comprehend this behaviour so I let it go as I was too busy with the interviews. There's no rule in any cafe that customers must eat. Customers can come just to have a drink. One need not order food.
I decided to go to St.James again on a second occasion. The second time was also to interview few people. I arrived at 2.55pm on a weekday. There were fewer customers than the first time. Many empty tables. Clearly, the staff weren't that busy. I walked in no one was at the door so I walked up to the table and there was a waitress clearing a table who noticed me and asked what I would like as I was sitting but she was still clearing the table. I said just some drinks. My first interviewee arrived at 3.00pm and the second interviewee came at 4.00pm. At 4.15pm an extremely rude girl (different waitress) with a bad attitude comes up to me and says "we are about to close the coffee station do you want to order anything?". For 1 hour and 15 minutes, no one came to our table even with a menu. No one asked to take the order. The waitress who i spoke to as i was sitting never came back. I was shocked by this poor service. They were not busy at all. Obviously, I was too busy interviewing people to notice this but if I just went there to eat they would still make me wait that long and just come to say they are closing the coffee station as if i was the one not ordering. The waitress who came up to my table had such a negative unhappy look on her face who thought she was too important to be working at St.James. It was ridiculous and shocking.
Anyway, the hot chocolate and coffee we ordered were awful. The worst I've had. I took two sips and left it. I do not recommend St.James to anyone as their service is appalling with rude staff and the drinks were of poor quality and standard. I will definitely not go back. I will make sure everyone I know won't go there either. St.James management you need new waitresses who are pleasant, friendly and enthusiastic.

Loved the fit out, and decor. The staff were nice enough, but the coffee was underwhelming. But the chai is good. I tried the pancakes, twice, and found them to be very bland. The pancakes were brown, and texture similar to soggy bread, and were very bitter in taste. They were drowning in frozen fruit syrup, and sour yoghurt!?!

Stumbled on this place on Saturday Night with my wife. We ordered the Pork Belly and the Steak. Steak was only average however the Pork Belly was top drawer and was recommended by the very friendly waitress. My wife was attracted to the menu initially because of the fresh and healthy looking options. We ordered deserts to take away and they were very very tasty! I had a very nice chat with the owner Sebastian as I was paying and his enthusiasm for the new restaurant was lovely to hear. I would certainly recommend as an overall experience and look forward to coming back for breakfast sometime soon.

I had the Wild Salmon with broccoli and asparagus and avocado with the poached egg !!! Wow !!! Such pure clean flavours , absolutely love the food here!.

An amazing industrial warehouse decor, gorgeous warm hearted staff and a cracker menu which is Paleo, healthy and filled with organic produce. Prices are reasonable considering the high quality of the produce. What more could you ask for?

Decided to have lunch here today because the place looks so great. I struggled with the lunch menu to find something to my liking because it is very limiting for a VG. I ordered the avocado mash with feta with coconut bread. Well it was very nice but not that great. Poached egg was too well done for my liking but the bread was terrific. Finished with the lamington and coffee
which was great.
The dinner menu looks more adventurous so might have to try that next time.

Ambiance:4/5
Service:3/5
Presentation:3/5
Food:4/5 Coffee:2/5
Came here on a Sunday afternoon. When we were placing our order, staff told us that the food might take about 35 mins. Waited for roughly 1 hour. 2 tables that ordered after us had their food arrived before us. Partner's food came but mine did not. Had to get one of the staff to check on my order. She was apologetic about it though. Didnt like the coffee, it was really thick and milky. Bircher was good. But wouldnt go back again.

Great food, great atmosphere and great service. The Bircher is devine and the smashed avo on point. Staff very friendly and cafe has been well done - looks great. Have brought a few friends here and have all loved the place. 100% would recommend.

Really poor service when we came in. We gave our order about 5 minutes after sitting down, however after half an hour of no food or drink service, we figured out the waitress didn't even put our order through the system. Waited an extra 25 minutes after that, and after multiple questions to the staff, asking where our drinks and food were. Finally got two out of the three drinks we ordered. Two of the three meals came after an hour of waiting, and the third meal never showed up. I left hungry and disappointed. The staff weren't too concerned that I never received a meal. I think service really needs to be improved if you want customers to come back.

Best breakfast out in Melbourne. What a transformation from the groove train. This place has great service, an awesome menu with everything you could wish for. The staff are friendly and the vibe is just right.

Such an amazing experience, food was amazing, staff were friendly and the atmosphere was brilliant. Service was really quick, can't wait to go back!

Went for the first time today for breakfast with my boyfriend and we both loved it! Coffee was beautiful and smooth, received great service, the staff were all lovely and very friendly. We ordered three meals to share and we're very impressed with all of them. Great flavours and a good variety of different meals on the menu to suit all. Will definitely be returning and recommending to all of our friends!

Just had a terrific lunch with my wife did not know what to expect but I have to admit we were pleasantly surprised.
We had the pan fried salmon and the St James way and the food was delicious. Good wine great coffee excellent service. Highly recommend and definitely be back.

Stumbled across this place whilst driving down Bridge Rd. Staff were so friendly from the onset, accommodating our pram. Food was delicious. The avocado smash with feta was yummy, coffee was really good too. Definitely worth a visit. Will be back when in the area.
BIRCHER QUEEN 👑
Fantastic new cafe! Fit out looks great! Coffee was excellent and came to the table within 5 mins of ordering. I got the Bircher which is in my top 3 in Melbourne! Amazing texture with lots of varied whole nuts throughout the sweet Bircher and the yoghurt on top was like velvet. Great portion size - very satisfying. Already planning our next trip back! Well done guys :)

Great new addition to Bridge Road. Good menu, great fit out and friendly service. Acai bowl was super delish and will definitely be back for dinner.

Great new addition to bridge road. Nice and spacious venue with an extensive and varied menu. I ordered the French toast with banana, berries, coconut yoghurt and maple syrup. A generous portion yet didn't leave you feeling uncomfortably full. Great combination of flavours too. Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu.

We went to St James Richmond this morning for breakfast and even though we were there early the place was already packed. I like the interior decor and that there was not loud music blaring.
I ordered the "Go Primal".
The first bite i took the the corn fritter thing was amazing. overall the combination of flavours, colours and texture was really good.
They seem to be promoting clean eating and this usually comes with a massive price tag, however not so at st James. I thought the prices were quite reasonable.

The waiters service was friendly.
I Loved the coffee.
We will be back for sure.

What a great find on Bridge road. St James boasts a lovely modern and clean fit out. The menu offered a great variety for the health conscious, sweet tooth as well as children! The food was fresh, delicious and well priced. We had the Go Primal (so good!) and the 16hr pulled pork Benedict (OMG). Walked away with a spring in our step. Thank you to the wait staff for being attentive but left us to enjoy our meals. Also enjoyed a latte with silky silky milk 👍 we will be back!

Staff need to up their game if they want return customers. Promised a menu, then had to fetch it ourselves after 5 mins. 4 waiters walking around more worried about keeping an eye on empty tables than taking orders. Coffee took 20 mins, our food sat getting cold while the chef banged away at his bell to unattentive waiters for 5 mins. Its like the waiters purposely avoid serving customers. Smashed avocado was good, pulled porked benedict had too much under cooked broccoli, but overall food was good. Coffee was burnt, but the barista looked over worked between being a barista and finalising peoples bills. Poor service brings this place down.

Came here for lunch on a busy Sunday with my husband. We both ordered the salmon dish, it tasted okay. Salmon was dry, and small with no crispy skin. I do understand it was a really expensive type of salmon. The broccolini was all stalks with none of the top parts and I didn't get any asparagus. Good parts were our food came really quickly which was surprising as the place was packed! Staff were also lovely and very attentive, polite and helpful. I don't think we will come back again, but am glad I tried it anyway :)

Really great fit out and very inviting. Going in the first week is always a risk with regards to wait times but ours was OK. The menu is pretty good however I'm getting a bit tired of cafes trying to turn eggs benedict into something it shouldnt be with pulled pork and all this other stuff and I love pulled pork. Ordered the Primal or big breakfast scrambled with no spinach... came out poached with spinach was annoying but wasn't going to have it changed as it would have taken too long. Good Rosti, bacon too fatty and tiny bit of steak had fat on it. Good orange juice

I saw this place on one of those foodie list websites and had to give it a go. I was very excited by the menu and attracted to the decor.
We managed to get a table promptly as we entered on a Saturday morning which was a nice surprise!
I ordered the St James Way which is basically their take on Smashed Avo and I added bacon. It was good but nothing special or different to it. A good basic filling dish. It did come with 2 slices of bread which is rare nowadays!
My friend had the 16 hour pulled pork benedict which came with broccoli and pumpkin and also filling and good.
Isn't it terrible that because these are standard dishes, we expect them to be different or wow us in some way! These were great and takes standard dishes back to the basics.
Service was quick but good took a while but we were pre-warned by the lovely staff and the place was busy.

Absolutely loved it!!! Service was quick and friendly. I would have expected some teething problems since this place just opened but I had no issues at all. The coffee was spot on and hot.

Came on a Sunday morning. They were full but service was poor. They joined tables with another group but didn't know who ordered what.Sat for about 15 minutes waiting for someone take our order.Coffee and Food took really long to come...Coffee was good food was really just average....
I think they really need to improve their service or many would go to all the other amazing Richmond brunch spots for the same price, better service and better food.Best of luck! Came for an early breakfast this morning. The fit out is refreshing, and they have really opened up the space - definitely not all dark and dingy like it was when the previous Groove Train occupied the premises.
Service was friendly, almond flat white was OK. We ordered the Terracotta eggs and my husband had the Go Primal. We only waited about 15 mins, so time wise it was quick. My husbands ordered was with scrambled eggs and no spinach, and was served poached eggs with spinach. We told the waitress but told her not to worry about changing it to the correct order, as we didn't want to wait. Terracotta eggs were good, nice flavours and you can't go wrong with the addition of goats cheese, I had it with Paleo bread on the side - we laughed at the portion size of the bread. I get that Paleo Bread is expensive however it really was on the stingy side - my photo does make it look larger than it was, it seriously was so small!
Il come back and try some other things on the menu for sure.

Came today for brunch and it was chaotic. 3/4 full but coffees took over 20 mins and food 45 mins which had to be followed up. Pancakes were very doughy and reheated. They had no sourdough toast, so gluten free bread was the option offered for my friend. Service was really patchy and no manager on the floor. Really disappointing experience.

Great food but Terrible service. With so many other choices in Richmond will not be returning. Asked a staff member for service, was advised she would get someone, only to have her return 5 mins later to take the order herself, unsure why she couldn't just take the order to begin with. We had to ask for our drinks three times and they were only bottled soft drink, they took 15 minutes to arrive. Sad that the service staff let down the chefs.

Always exciting to see a new breakfast place in bridge Rd. It looked fantastic. The place is packed and the staff are still finding their groove. It was packed. The poor server seemed a little overwhelmed and it took a good 20mins to get our coffees and another 40 mins on top to receive our food.

When the food arrived it looked fantastic. I ordered the crab omelette which was nice. Perhaps a little more seasoning.

My partner ordered the st James avocado. Also very nice the lonely egg needed a friend though.

Overall a good experience, once the staff find their rhythm I'm sure this place will become one of the more popular breakfast spots in richmond.
Tried my first coffee from here this morning, was hoping it wasn't one of those places that looks like it has potential but lets down on their food and coffee.....BUT it was a really great coffee (had a long mac). Definitely going to go back on the weekend to try the food.
