Review The Fish Market - Richmond

Timinmelbourne
Grabbed some take away from here. My fish burger with spicy sauce was good, the salad was fresh, the fish tasty, but personally I didn't like the hamburger bun as it had no texture and no flavour. It was like a sugar bun which is not for me. The additional fish burger that my partner ordered was good too, ans the pineapple added some additional sweetness was tasty. The potato cake was tasty and not greasy at all. But the overall winner for me was the sweet potato fries which were seasoned well, and they tasted like beer battered chips. They were really moorish. The ease of ordering through google was great, user friendly and no fuss.

You will not find a better fish & chip place in Melbourne. Period. Fresh fish on display and arrives daily. Very reasonably priced. Awesome lunch deals. Great staff. I can’t commend this place enough. Burger lunch special is one of my favs along with the calamari salad. Bought some fresh blue grenadier & salmon to cook at home and amazing.
Dave Wolfie
I came here as a return customer, hungry, and needing fish and chips. Got the blue grenadier crumbed as a combo with added potato cake and calamari rings. Normally I get the battered fish, but the crumbed is a good option if you don’t want everything deep fried. The fish was delicious, despite having barely any crumb. The chips and potato cakes are always good. However the calamari rings were a let down as they were really soggy and fell apart. The store also forgot to put a wedge of lemon, and the tartare sauce. I called the store, and got a “Sorry, thanks for the feedback, bye” response. Not sure what I was after, but perhaps some replacement calamari rings next time would have been nice.

The service was very good. Friendly guy. Three salt and pepper calamari was cooked to perfection and very tasty with a nice aoli on the side. The potato cakes were good and the cold beer spot on. Exactly what was needed on the hot day.
Joe Kenny
Fresh seafood and an option of being grilled or fried. They serve with chips but also have salad options. So you can go and be healthy and have a grilled fresh fish with a lovely salad, or be a huge fatty and have a massive deep fried fish and chips. I went for the second option 😂

I personally don't realy like fiah and cheap! But this restaurantb looks abit different from other fish and cheap! Order some platter still oily like other fish and chips but my husband find the burger delicious maybe because its a fish burger. Over all we are happy with the service and the place that very clean. Cheers.
Rob Skelton
The fish and chips were perfect. The batter was how it should be, tasty and crunchy.
Mickey
I ordered Lunch special Fish(battered)and chips with potato cakes. The fish was Flake. It was so tasty and rich in good fatty. Sweet potato chips was also awesome!! Not oily but tasty. I will definitely come back.
Siri Weustink
I had delicious and fresh - half a dozen of oysters with lemon, vinaigrette and/or tobasco sauce; chargoaled calamari, aioli with little side salad for entree and to top it off with Fried Snickers for main All staff were super friendly, bubbly and answered all my curious questions about their menu. Def return for other yummy food items and Fried Snickers is DA BEST!!! Thanks guys Ps also thought fair priced

I ordered a chicken burger. The chicken was overcooked and very dry. The bacon was burnt. Not nice at all. The wife ordered a soft shell crab burger. "Sorry, we are out of crab". She then ordered the fish burger. Very small piece of fish and little tatar sauce in it. Won't be back.

Great fresh seafood , best tasting batter I've had in ages . Fast & friendly service . Will be back for sure

Upmarket fish & chippery. Standard meal -fish, choice of 3 salads and chips or rice is $13.50. Expensive? Not especially given it's the going rate for a burger, smallish pizza etc. Tempted to try the deep fried Mars Bar!
Seymon Martino
Grill burramundi was grilled well. Patato cakes were crispy & batter not to much. Pineapple fritters were the BEST!!!!
Ivylia Neimy
Love this place. Yummy everything and great staff. They even remember my rare name <3
Mel Nikou
Great place for fish and chips, and they have great salads to choose from, with a tasty dressing
Brenda Doran
Yummy teriyaki salmon. Perfect size for lunch. Will def revisit.
Melville Tellez
They don't just call it Melbourne's best fish n chips place. Must try if you are on bridgeroad.
Tim Doran
Awesome fresh fish and nice sized burgers! I recommend it for it was a good experience and good value!
Arielle Fleur
Wow delicious!! Best batter? Best flake! Sweet potato chip?! Who can object to that! Only thing is burgers are really fat and weigh a tonne, could use less beef and probably a thinner lighter bun, like brioche perhaps.. But overall yum!
Julie Joy Clarke
The flake in beer batter was soft & sweet. Combined with sweet potato chips plus pumpkin and baby spinach salad and washed down with Mountain Goat beer it was just delicious. Fantastic service, highly recommended.
Ada Chan
Fish and Chips. So fresh and it melts in your mouth.
Natasha Lir
Fish grilled to perfection, excellent customer service, will dine in again :) thanks

Great fish and chips place with character.

The food was pretty good, as was the ambience.

The grilled salmon had a tasty touch of sesame seeds, which added texture to every bite.

The chips were pretty standard. Grilled calamari was above average so couldn’t fault it! Will definitely return!

Got the lunchtime fish n chip special. The chips were good but the potatoes cake was appalling!! Thin and at other side is NO potatoe just thin fried batter!! Stuff u pick off from a flake when there’s too much batter but in this case it was hard! The fish was a waste! Good piece of fish but was spoiled due to poor batter!! It almost tastes like it’s processed and from an oven not deep fried! Anyway am moving on thanks...

Restaurant dirty, food gross and took ages. Also didn't blank out dishes on the menu board that they had run out of. Was really looking forward to trying this place but thoroughly let down.
Francesca
The first couple times we went to this place we had take away, we loved the fried flakes light and fluffy, almost a donut kind of dough around them however, of late, the receipe must've changed because they become oiley and not fluffy at all and we are left with the taste of oil. The chips are sub par and would probably be better to get kfc chips or something else.
Last 2 occasions we ate there the flakes gave us stomach cramps. Definitely a change in order.

Had to wait more then 15 mins for a small strip of salmon fish and Greek salad but that’s not my main concern, which was the fact that the fish was tasteless and when I asked for the tale part they still turn around and say that “that’s the same as the tale and they are both 200gr and completely disregard the fact that I wanted the tale part. Small portion with a medium sized salad and a coke $24.50 really doesn’t justify the cost or the service, I left the place more hungry before i came in.

This is our local go-to fish and chip shop. It’s always buzzing and we’ve been coming here for years. We regularly order the fish market for 1 and the fish burger. The sweet potato fries are awesome and their normal chips are chunky like they should be. A seafood stick and pineapple fritter are a staple for us. They always have a bunch of vibrant salads and grilled fish options too. This little chippy is great for a good local feed.
Chippie
We had the battered flake which was let down by the oiliness of the batter. The oil rose to the top when you put your fork into the fish. The fish itself was quite nice. The chips and potato cakes were substandard. Chips were undercooked while the potato cake seemed stale and hard. I still have that unpleasant mouthfeel of a coating of oil.
Update April 2018. We had a craving for potato cakes and chips this afternoon and thought we’d try this place again. The potato cakes are still not the best and the chips are pale and bland. Disappointed...Again..
Costa
Fish market is my go to fish n chip joint in Richmond. The Rockling with greek salad is delicious. Fish is so fresh and priced appropriately.
IsFoodIsGood
An upmarket Hunky Dory.
The rice is better, the fish is better and the presentation of food is done with a lot more care than the chain.
Great local beers available with friendly staff.
Will recommend to anyone who lives locally for a great nutritional take away meal when you don't have time to cook.
Jimmy V-Rod.
Have been here several times. Each time getting progressively worse. Both in price and service... Last time I made my order as simple as I could, and asked for one of their packs. I only added that I wanted tartare sauce, and a little chicken salt on chips. What I ended up with was 1 tomato sauce packet, and enough salt to render the food inedible. It was so excessive that no reasonable person could eat it. I was home before I noticed, so I figure that if I'm going to spend $30 on fish n chips as a treat, and get that, next time I would rather drive to Swan St.

Great fish and chip venue always has quality fish and chips whether for s it down or take away, friendly staff and a nice indoor/outdoor area.
Fer Tostado
I been a usual for some time, I loge their sweet potato chips, they are beautiful 😍 however the last time I order the grilled Tuna and was horrible. They politely change it, however was not great. I keep forgetting that the previous times happened the same. Unfortunately that tuna really killed my stomach and had a bad night.
Hungry Ronin
As far as the humble fish and chips go....this is the shit. A class act. Love the small things such as venue lighting, plating, readily ready water and no annoying extra charge for tartare or tomato sauce. The quality of our grilled and fried fish was a cut above avg, and the dim sum was superb. It will be hard to go back to my usual suburban fish and chippery.
Eda Corr
This is the best place to come and get fish and salad, chips too btw. When ever i come here i always get the tuna steak with the asian salad and it is always fresh and dope. The only downfall is that they don't have enough condiments, like soy sauce
Alex
Undercooked Flake, batter was still half raw, soggy Greek Salad, tiny scallops- nice once removed from the excess of raw batter. Very very average meal.

Love this place! Great food, great quantity, great interior, great staff - basically GREAT! I cannot boast enough about this place enough. Well worth the visit!
Denny Patron
Heard mixed reviews and seen mixed reviews on here but for me it was defiantly not a great experience! Friendly staff but the grilled flake was really ordinary, it was flat as a piece of paper and didn't have any flavour. Chips fine and the dim sum was 10/10 but fish is the key! Hunky dory or richmond oysters are still the top 2 in Richmond!
Armitage Shanks
Good flake, good chips, good potato cakes, good value. Good grief! A great fish and chippery!

Comparatively light on the batter than your old school fish and chips so the fish and potato cakes had a nice thin veneer of crispy goodness. We had the pack for 2 which came with some interesting but no less delish dimmies. Def give this place a run.
Nate
Nice place especially on a nice sunny day. The fish and chips here are definitely tastier and less greasy but they also charge a fair but more too. Good variety of not your normal salads and the place is fitted out well. Friendly guys who cook the fresh selection of seafood on display for you.
Christine S
On a summers day in Richmond the last thing you want for lunch is something heavy, greasy and fattening (especially if you're wanting to fit into that bikini in a couple of weeks), so my partner and I went to the Fish Market on bridge road for something healthy!

We ordered grilled barramundi with a side of 3 bean salad to share. Holy-Molly, the fish was a 10/10... It was tender and the skin was so crunchy, I haven't had a fish grilled like that and don't even get me started on the salad!! It had me taking notes replicate at home!!

Must see if you're on bridge road!
Luke Anthony Catogg
Rivals Hunky Dory. Fish is a lot better. Well cooked. Greek salad complimented the dish not your average fish n chip store...............4/5
Edward Schweitzer
Try the Fish Burger but get it battered and fried. Really, really good. Sometimes they get busy at lunch and there is a wait but this is solid fish and chips in a much nicer atmosphere.
Johan Snyman
Friendly service. Not as greasy as one would suspect. Fish tasted great, but was slightly overcooked. Salad was running out, and so was my first choice fish, so had to amend my order.
Putfoodinme_
The Fish Market offers something beyond your standard fish and chip shop experience. Cleaner and less greasy, I love the healthier options for a quick dinner (grilled fish, salad and rice) and the value of the Fish Market for 2 when I'm feeling a bit more indulgent.
Kein
Fresh fish is always good! Lots of seats, option to sit out in the sun if the weather is decent. Waiting time is about 15 minutes on average. Grilled fish and salad for $10 is always a decent lunch option.
Yummy Food
The fish we ordered is fresh and coated with very crispy battered, the only downside is the battered is rather thick and oily, will go there more often if they make it less oily/healthy. Their beef burger is very nice too!
David Liao
If you have craving for fried seafood this is the place. Chris the owner opened this place cause he just can't find good fish and chips in Richmond. The seafood is so fresh and the chips are cooked to perfection
Christy
Absolutely loved the fish and chips here at The Fish Market. I'd say skip the dimsims and potato cakes, and go all out on the battered fish. Fried to perfection - golden and crunchy. Thumbs up!!
Mellie
Nomnomnomnom! Sweet potato chippies and perfectly cooked, fall apart fish. Home made tartare was a winner! Mixed reviews we give it a double thumbs up. Nice guys too!
Busywig
This place is the best. salmon. prawn skewer. both a good time. get after those omega 3s. five stars.
Lucinda
Yuk! Inedible! The fish was.... Yuk! Inedible!
The fish was cooked terribly and they failed to add so much as a squeeze of lemon to either piece of fish leaving it completely inedible. They also failed to add a wedge of lemon to the takeaway box so squeezing some ourselves was not an option once we got home. The chips were soggy and unsalted. The sweet potato chips were okay. The salads displayed in the bay were NOT the salads we were given in takeawy containers. We basically got a plastic bowl full of lettuce with some capsicum and were lucky to have a piece of feta or anything else between us. I will never be returning to this place. Ever!
Melbchick12
Not so gluten friendly. The Fish Market advertises that it's gluten friendly but tonight they sold me 'grilled' blue grenadier that was actually lightly crumbed. Unfortunately I had eaten a few bites before I realized. When I called to query whether the fish was crumbed they confirmed that it was and to be honest, did not appear to be very concerned about my wellbeing. A previous serve of barramundi from The Fish Market was full of awful grey sludge. They've run out of chances - we won't be back.
KatMmm
We ordered the salt and pepper calamari with salad. The portion size was ok ($10, 8 pieces), but the calamari was over-cooked and over-salted. The salad was nice, but serving it all in a paper cone when you're dining in is ridiculous.
Susan Hardjono
Don't know how a chippy can get the chips wrong, we got takeaway (a month back) and found them to be raw in the middle. Never going back, despite the review on The Age today.
GD
Craving FnC, chose the Open Greek Fish Pita ... well hello...awesome meal! Good choice.
Matt
Nice fittings can't save it. Average food, bad service, rude staff. Not much else to say
Rheemam
Terrible service. Rude staff and food was cold. Would not recommend!
Hungry Times
Went to pick up a pack for 2 as a takeaway for dinner. The place was empty with four staff on, but for some reason our order was made in such a hurry that the chips were still raw! For a fish and chip shop to get the basics wrong is a worry. Batter was sweet tasting and the dimmies were incredibly salty. Hoped this place would be a good local, but don't judge by the decor, the food is rubbish. Not going back! Skip this place and head to your traditional greasy fish and chippy, they know what they're doing!
Mhlord73
Batter like biscuit. There are not many things a fish and chip place has to do well but it has to dothem really well. I just ate some of the worst batter i ve ever had. The consistency of biscuit. And it had holes in it so the oil had soaked into the fish. Really poor.
Noglutenthanks
Great fish. We've been here twice and have just arranged to meet friends there for a 3rd visit. They serve beutifully cooked fresh fish and the service is fast and friendly. Best of all, they have coped well with all my dietary restrictions without a fuss. While quite a bit of their business seems to be take-away, there is a bright and welcoming dining area. I think we are set to become regulars.

Great!!!!!!! Will be back. Great food, had the grilled calamari. Was incredibly tasty ! Will be back. Staff super friendly aswell!!

I took my parents for lunch today and it was lovely! Good service, good food and good value in a comfortable venue. Will go again.
Mr Chef
Fresh! fresh! fresh!. Fantastic fresh fish great value had a soft shell crab burger (huge) guys behind the counter very helpful we also ate chargrilled salmon half shell scollops with pesto and crispy beer batter fried flathead tails and some chips and a lovely fresh beetroot feta and walnut salad cant go wrong in this place well done guys we will be back.
Sm22wind
Great local spot!!. Fish is lovely and fresh, not frozen!!! Salads are always tasty and made fresh daily! This is the best fish and chip shop in Richmond!! If you are hungry try the burgers!!! Great service too, very friendly
Oliver Hill
Terrible. Cold food, bad service and mucked up the order
Lauren
Looked like a funky place but nice fresh salad came absolutely swimming in Caesar sauce - it was inedible. (3 of us left whole serves.) Wasn't a big deal but thought we'd offer some feedback that it might be nice to let people know or leave dressing in the side? (It was displayed and offered bare.) Well - what was a friendly piece of feedback was met with extreme passive aggression. Despite otherwise good food and service at the counter, we could no longer recommend to anyone.

I love F&C, but not these.... Having grown up around 100's of Fish & Chips shops (& I'm not kidding) I can tell you that the food here is not great. I simply ordered a piece of flake, scallops (usually my favourite thing) & potato cakes. They were so greasy, so obviously the oil was not up to temp. I think I used a gazillion serviettes & then resorted to using cutlery...C'mon for fish & chips? Worst potato cakes I've ever had & I almost cried at the travesty of my burnt, shrivelled excuses for scallops. For $21 including a drink & some tartare sauce this is definitely NOT good value. In fact for those menu prices, these people should be serving real potato cakes & hand cut chips, not frozen crap. Sadly, on the way out I spotted two Suits enjoying what looked like nice bits of grilled salmon...maybe a second chance is in order; but first impressions are hard to shake. The décor however is amazing! I loved the bright yellow theme & how clean the place is. I love clean places! I have to give them credit where it's due...the toilet was spotless!! If they could improve on the food, this could be a really great eatery. Oops, should also mention that the service was really good.

Waves. Are some of these reviews by the competition?! Having read the reviews, we entered the Fish Market with trepidation after debating whether it was worth a try. The answer? Yes it was! Our order was taken promptly and cautiously and within 15 minutes excellent griller snapper and salmon were on our table with chips, not quite to die for, but close. Its a pity that people may abuse the "honour" system - The Fish Market is worth trying as long as you understand it is trying to be a 5 star restaurant.
Carmie
This place sucks! Have been 3 times including tonight and they can never get our very simple order correct! And then when you correct them, they have the cheek to roll eyes rather than accepting the fact that they cannot competently take an order! Foods average and too expensive for what it is!
Generous Serve
Oysters to die for. Soft crab, seared tuna, scallop skewers, sweet potato chips and mouth watering salads, are amongst the items on the menu to try. Cooked with simple ingredients eg garlic, parsley, ginger, packs the dishes with delicious flavours. Don't let the "take away" shop look fool you. Friendly service! This casual eat out has become a Sunday ritual.
Chargergirl265
Loved it. My friend recommended this place and I went . Though we don't live in sorento we was down there and no where good to eat so I said to my daughter who on her l s let's drive to bridge road,
The girl who took our order was friendly and helpfull
My dughter who is fussy had grilled salmon and chips and she loved if
I ordered way too much food but it was worth it
Had fresh oysters , a prawn skewer and seafood skewer the calamari special and the citrus salad ( the mint dressing was amazing )
After our meal we spoke to the chef Chris who said next time we come in he will prepare us something special
Well worth the drive

Will be visiting again
Josh Olds
The place looked great from the outside. They had a great menu range. I was surprised as the service was really terrible and good pretty ordinary.
James Armstrong
The Beef Inferno Burger from the fish market is the epitome of Melbourne burgers, a glorious compilation of melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo, egg, onion and the king of the lot, a fiery sauce of ultimate glory. If you enjoy burgers, you will enjoy the delicious inferno. Currently under taking the ten day-ferno challenge.
Tony
Great fish. After reading The Age's review of the restaurant we read on line reviews and were dubious about going, but are glad we did. The guy behind the counter wasn't exactly Mr. Smiley, but he was cordial, welcoming, and explained the dishes to us. Everything we had was delicious and reasonably priced. We had the grilled calamari served on a tangy Asian salad ($11.50), wonderful tempura soft shelled crab ($7.50), fried rockling ($9.50), perfectly crispy sweet potato chips ($5.50/7.50/9.50), and a cabbage salad served with a great dressing ($4/8). And only $5 for BYO. Remember, this place is cash only. We'll be back.
Alice_mary
I also don't understand the bad reviews. I eat at the fish market regularly, the guys are always very helpful. Never been disappointed with there recommendations. Love the fresh fish and salads. Nice to have a healthy meal and not have to cook it. Great place, I highly recommend it!!!!
Preston Starr
Yes.. I was concerned about this one. The reviews on Urbanspoon were mixed, and some savage. But, I was craving good fish and chips - and the 'word of mouth reviews' from Richmond locals had been positive.

Looking at Urbanspoon, I expected to be met by rude, arrogant and horrendous staff. For example, one review wrote "They said they let all their fish sit at the window until higher paying customers dine in". NOW, do you really think anyone would actually ever say that? I say no, and expect a number of the bad reviews are 'Urbanspoofing' (fake reviews from other traders?).

The PROOF WAS IN THE PUDDING. The two staff working were exceptionally friendly - they joked around and treated me very well. Great guys. They talked to another customer at length about the different kinds of fresh fish in the window.

As for the fish, it was delicious. It was battered to perfection and served crispy (not soggy). Particularly impressive was the beer flavour that was actually detectable in the beer batter. A rarity.

The chips were good, and the salad was both unique (asparagus, rocket and sun-dried tomato) and fresh. Once again, the 'Urbanspoofing' reviews completely missed the mark.

Would I return? YES. Next time, I'll order something more advanced when I'm not craving the amazing simplicity of good old fish n chips.

Recommended.
Lori Madison
A hidden gem!. It's hard to believe this place has so many bad reviews. I think there is a misunderstanding, this is not your average fish and chips shop. If you are after a cup of deep fired potato chips with a frozen fish and potato cakes move on, you'll be disappointed.

I go almost weekly to the fish market to enjoy fresh seafood, well prepared at a decent price. I always order something different (grilled snapper, salmon, burger, calamari, oysters, crab, lobster...) and I'm always delighted by the tastiness and freshness of the products.
There is also healthy and out-of-the-ordinary sides: sweet potatoes chips and 3 exotic salads (not your boring regular Greek salads with cheap Feta and grossly cut tomatoes...).
The only not-so-healthy item on the menu is a Mars or Snickers fried bar which is quite filling as you can imagine.

The staff has always been incredibly friendly with us since day one. The place can get busy at times but the service has always been quick and food delicious. I highly recommend it!
Richmond Foodie
Wow...seriously good fish & chips!! We had the soft shell crab & steamed salmon & both were fantastic & ripping value. This is not your local f&c shop type....way better. Definitely going back.
Katelouiselord
Three strikes and your out!!!. On our third attempt at the fish market it was the most flavourless, dry and inedible fish. Salad full of grit. Richmond get it together. Is there nowhere for half decent takeaway in this suburb!???
Katie
Could do better. Great looking space & fresh fish display. But ultimately disappointing. They forgot to give us two pieces of fish! Not great especially at these prices. The fish we did get was greasy. Chips & potatoe cakes were okay. Wish we had ordered a salad to compensate for the heavy grease. Think we will stick with the local fish & chip shop. It might not look great, but the food is excellent and half the price.
Poi Master
Food was fresh and well presented. I highly recommend the sweet potato chips, they were crispy and delicious!
J
Rude dudes! Not sure why, but the staff acted as if they were all too awesome to be there as fish and chip servers... We all tried the grilled fish and chips and it wasn't much to write home about at all. As locals we've nearly eaten at every restaurant on Bridge Rd, and were so excited at having a new fish and chip shop so this place is a super disappointment.
Nacho
Really pleased with the food, nice and fresh. Good portion size. Staff can be friendlier. And guys! ...if you need to argue with each other, do it out the back away from customers. I'd go back though
Svh777
Love this place !!! I go at least once a week and my family all agree its great fresh food ... They are a little pricey but the quality of the food dictates this ... I've found all the staff very friendly and can't recommend it enough ...
Travis Hammer
Dirty tables, dirty tables everywhere! Food was yum!
Al
Bad value. They're not any better than what the average Fish & Chippery shop can serve, yet pricey. Small chips for $3.50 is good for 1/2 person while minimum chips in other places would still be a huge serving.

They try to make a more upscale impression by having good ambience and serving the food to your table, but it's really nothing special. Speaking of upscale, they only accept cash and they point out an ATM machine in-store if you don't have any, but then you have to pay a withdrawal fee.

Don't waste your money. You don't need to spend over $20 for fish and chips. For that much, you should get utterly full.
Julz
Upmarket fish and chips and burgers in a light filled atmosphere. Would def recommend a burger with a side of fries. Counter staff don't appear to be that well educated in friendly customer service but food out ways that .
Peter James
It was ...o..k its like they mimicked hunky dory but forgot the quality.

What a find. I'm a chef and has been for 20++ years , so you could say I know about food yes?? Then this place is great , love the freshness , taste . Big and juicy burgers , well grilled fish and chips. Salads always fresh . A great find for a very busy chef who needs fast food fresh , thanks guys, you rock!
Anna_g_c
Fresh and tasty. We absolutely love The Fish Market - the fish and seafood is really fresh; it is beautifully cooked and presented and the staff are friendly and attentive. Try the scallops - they are absolutely amazing!
Stej
Not taking cash yet having an ATM that will charge me to get cash out annoys me. Not telling me you are cash only when I ring to order or stating it on the menu annoys me more. Having cold fish and chips because I've had to line up for a ridiculous amount of time to pick up my order means I will not be returning.
Kristy
Awesome fish, nice atmosphere lovely staff good prices for the quality. Ultra impressed!
MYT
Friendly service. Tried one of the specials, chargrilled calamari with a side of coleslaw. Fresh and tasty. Will head back to try other menu items. Good addition to the Bridge Road eateries.
Jaidith
Great decor, bright and cheery. Sadly food hit and miss, barra delicious as was calamari, but steamed salmon slightly overcooked. Flavours were lovely though, esp the calamari. Was initially put off by girl taking my order, no smile, very unwelcoming, and looked like she would rather be elsewhere.
GJK
I'll be back. Very good grilled fish. Chips first class. Service helpful and friendly.
Vlad
Not the best. The fish and chips were really soggy and oily. They also charge extra for sauce $1 for a very small amount of sauce.
Iheartbaklava
Had the fish both grilled and battered and they were pretty good. Both the regular potato chips and sweet potato chips were awesome! Most fish and chips places tend to use average chips but the ones here hit the spot. The fish burger was different but I don't think it was a standout. Salads were average. Service was good.
Traveller
Have tried the fish burger twice - awesome. Had a sardines special which was fantastic. Nice chips too.
Trinity Michaela
Yum. Finally a proper fish and chip shop on Bridge road, everything I have had has been nice. Best calamari rings I've had (coated in panko crumbs) and my partner always gets something from the specials board and loves it. We've been going on Sunday arvos and it is a great little venue to sit and watch the football while enjoying your meal.
Byron
Finally fabulous fresh fish in Richmond!. We are old Richmonites and are so excited to see The Fish Market up and running on Bridge Rd, it's exactly what the area needs and the quality of food, friendly and expert staff and gorgeous Richmond fit out makes it the perfect place for fish'n chips! We bought some fresh fish to take home and were so impressed with the clean, fresh and unfrozen fish, the expert tips on how to cook it and the passion of the staff for healthy, fresh and sustainable fishing. We will definitely be back and make it a must stopover whenever we visit our old neighborhood. Great work guys!!

Richmond food lover. Loved it. The display of fresh fish in the counter is superb. Far nicer than any other f&c shops in the area. The menu is extensive with a 'Market Specials' board showing all the fresh produce. As I was feeling in a relatively healthy frame of mind, we tried the grilled garlic prawns and scallops which were delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back.

Tried this place for the first time tonight. The fish and chips were soggy and oily . Average at best and certainly does not reflect the price and shop fit out.
Good Stuff
What a gorgeous place. Staff were so friendly and we had a lovely meal. We took the kids there for dinner and we had various stuff and all were delicious. So nice to have a quality and healthy spin on fish & chips. You get what you pay for and this place is worth it. Nothing like the greasy old local fish & chip shop. Well done guys we'll be back.

Slightly pricey but it's convenient. Serving slightly small but it's quite filling. Love the Cinnamon Sugar Covered Deep Fried Mars Bar. No one does that ever!

A noticeable step up from your local fish and chip shop!. Not sure why this places has received negative reviews. The food was fresh, the price was completely acceptable for Melbourne, and the portion sizes were huge; our dim sims and piece of flake were mammoth and the burger could almost feed two people!!

Love it!. I am really suprised that this place has got any bad reviews at all.

I had seriously been hoping that a decent fish and chip shop would open near my house.

The staff are great and the food is delicious!!

Healthy cheap eating. Just visited this new local fish and chippery - it has really yummy healthy food. I had a serve of grilled salmon with a side of tomato, rocket and fetta salad. Excellent Excellent Excellent. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the salad full of flavor. And it was under $15 for the fish and salad - you can't beat it. My husband had a burger, which was ridiculously huge and very very tasty....the caramelised onion is a winner. We will be back!

We just tried to go & order takeaway to give this place the benefit of one visit, yet have ended up at Grill'd instead after waiting with another 3 people (who also walked out) to try & order whilst the 4 people working there failed to acknowledge our existence as they were all standing & "serving" one couple who were taking an inordinate amount of time to order. Note: there was only 1 or 2 other people in the place waiting for meals, so busy is not an excuse. We won't be back & will continue to DRIVE to Hunky Dory in South Yarra.

Loved it!!. Just had lunch at The Fish Market and it was delicious! My husband and i had burgers, they were HUGE and very tasty! The kids had fish bites and chips and really enjoyed them! We'll be back soon :-) Thanks

We want this to work!!. Living in the area, we were excited to return form holidays to see the business opened. In spite of a neighbours being disappointed be decided to give it ago. Love the fitout - it is light & vibrant. We ordered the individual fish & chips with salad to eat in. The service was friendly & efficient; the meals well presented & the chips so hot and crunchy. Unfortunately the grilled fish, the hero of the plate, was thin and overcooked :( Will give it a couple of months before we try again - fingers crossed!

Great place. Been waiting years for a good fish n chip shop in Richmond and we have it 'The Fish Market' since opening Ive returned many times and tried pretty much the whole menu and have not been disappointed. The first few times i went in there was a big wait time but it was to be expected as it was a new place and everybody wanted to try but that's improved every time Ive gone in so you wont see me attending the other second rate places in the area

Disappointing. We too were very disappointed with The Fish Market. Living around the corner we were eager to try the 'new' addition to our Bridge Rd shops and watched it refurbished keenly.
We ordered takeaway from the menu picked up previously, when we arrived at the stated time our boxes of food were already on the counter going cold (without punctured bags letting everything get soggy). When we got home realised the dim sims already were drenched in soy sauce....staff should ask before doing this as some don't like soy!!!!
Our three pieces of fish were over cooked, the 2 flake were thin and extremely dry. I have had much better (and larger) pieces of flake that are perfectly cooked for less money. The barramundi was only 'just' and again overcooked.
The potato cakes were fine as were the chips but both seemed of a 'commercial nature' and you could probably get elsewhere.
On a much brighter note the salad that came with my fish pack was lovely, fresh, full of egg and lettuce and just wonderful.
Guys....please get the overcooking of your fish right and give a 'decent' size piece of flake and the locals will return....we have been hanging out for a local !!

The freshest fish on Bridge Road, exceptional service from owners who care, and good quality, old fashioned fare.
Glad someone has brought this to Bridge road!

Went in with the family. The kids had delicious grilled flathead tails - they 'demolished' it - chips and potato cakes. Adults had Beef & Bacon burgers and a couple of scallops. Everything was delicious and loved the fact we could sit in the well decked out local 'Fish & Chip' shop and eat food that wasn't soggy. Will be back . . . hopefully next week!!!

Waste of time, money & bad customer service!. I decided to try this fish and chip shop & Went in over the weekend. i was drawn in by the nice colours so decided to give it a try! I waited up to almost 30 minutes for basic fish & chips. The staff were not friendly and the food is extremely expensive. Another thing that was annoying was that they do not take card so I had to walk up the block to use the ATM. Food was very poor and especially considering the prices it was a bigger thumbs down. Kiwi fish and chips is a little bit further away from me but definitely worth it! They have great quality fresh fish for amazing value & extremely friendly staff with little wait time.

BEST IN TOWN. Firstly Boduke - u must have a rival business in the area or have rocks in your head...
Been there a couple times since opened and have had the grilled fish and chips and salad at lunch and they were to die for!
Went there today with the family and had the grilled prawns and the octopus with the chilli sauce chips fish and burgers which i challenge anyone to find a better tasting octopus then what i had today! Compliments to the guys and girls there who ALWAYS make it a pleasure dining there.

As for the comment Boduke about the can of drink? You clearly havent been there as if you have you'd know they dont sell cans, but you can continue to post whatever negative comments you like as you clearly have a personal grudge on the team at this establishment...

Keep up the good work guys!

Just had an awesome fish burger and beetroot salad, but the chargrilled sardines were off the scales!!

Delicious Seafood Tapas. Just had dinner here and it was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I can't believe some of the seafood tapas coming out of this new fish and chippery. They taste like something you’d get at a serious seafood restaurant like Atlantic.

My BF and I ate a whole char-grilled baby snapper, teriyaki salmon skewers, oysters Kilpatrick, chips and coleslaw. Then for dessert we had a banana fritter and a deep fried Mars bar which went so well together.

The food was delish, the guys behind the counter were friendly and funny (even though they were getting slammed with so many orders) and the place was buzzing, will be back soon :)

Great Fish and Chips - Highly Recommended. The place was fresh, clean and service was good well suited restaurant for the Richmond area.
I work in the area and I have visited the other fish and chips shop down the road and it is not clean at all.
At least the food is top quality and I am sure to go there at least once a week.

Serious Seafood. We recentely visited The Fish Factory, some of the reviews i have read about this establishment, i feel have been harsh. You can tell by looking at this place that this crew has spent quite a sustantial amount of money and are serious about making a mark on Richmond. Like all new ventures there are going to be teething problems, but the quality of the food speaks for itself. Having come from a seafood background I am conviced that the snapper in the window was still taking its last breath, thats how fresh it was. The chips are among the best that i have tasted, my partner being a burger lover could not stop raving about how great her burger tasted. We also tried the garlic grilled prawns, WOW nothing more to say. Once this place finds it feet, watch out Ricmond.
Definately be back soon for more.

Greeted with frowning faces and lack lustre menu, I wasn't anticipating anything noteworthy. We ordered two burgers, and both felt very underwhelmed by the experience. The chicken burger claimed to have guacamole, although I didn't see any. It was basically a burnt bun with a lot of lettuce, and a piece of chicken. Service was poor, as they were rushing to close. Such a shame. We won't be returning here.

Fresh best in richmond. I have lived and worked in Richmond for over 20 years and to this date in my opinion this is the best fish and chips that has been available. I have eaten in and purchased take away from The Fish Market. The service is fantastic, the food is fresh very fresh well prepared and well presented. the burgers are awesome. Bridge Rd has always struggled with good quality eateries but over the last 6 months has really taken an overhaul. The Fish Market is a breath of fresh air for Richmond. Thanks for the excellent food and service

About Time. I love the fact that we have fresh fish and chips in Richmond and instead of taking it away, we can eat it in the cafe.
Great work.

Like others I had been eagerly awaiting this place opening; I've never managed to to find good fish and chips in Richmond and will occasionally head over to Kiwi Fish and Chips in East Melbourne where they serve up probably the best F&C I've had. Anyway, I thought that this place might be a good option that was a bit closer to home and the prices certainly suggested that the quality should be in the same league. So I had high hopes for my visit. Unfortunately I was disappointed. First the positives. The fit out looks great, I love the yellow and white; very fresh and bright. The young woman taking orders on the register was doing a fantastic job under pressure, very friendly, smiling and helpful. The wait from ordering was about 25 mins which I would probably normally think was about 10 mins too long for this type of takeaway, but given it was the peak dinner rush and they've only just opened was fine. They are cash only but have an atm in the corner. I had cash on me but it would really irritate me to pay an atm fee to take out money to pay. And for those of us that normally use meals cards to pay in restaurants thus is a big deterrent. Ok, now the food. I had the Fish Market for One Pack: Fish, Chips, Salad and sauce. I asked for grilled fish and tartar sauce. I think the fish was a piece of flake, which is what you would expect when ordering in a pack like this. Sadly it had been so overcooked that it was extremely hard and dry; I could hold it by one end horizontally and it literally didn't even bend. I ended up eating a piece from the middle and throwing the rest away. The chips were very nice; crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the the inside, but there was so few of them that it was almost funny. Obviously it's not great to overload with chips that are just going to go to waste but this pack definitely had the look of meanness about it. I'm not a huge eater and I would definitely have liked some more chips. The salad was a Greek salad. It was a generous serve and the olives and fetta were really tasty. The tomato and was nice and ripe and juicy. The cucumber let the salad down though as it had been sliced so thinly that it had become limp and almost translucent in the dressing. Otherwise a nice salad but visually unappealing with the soggy cucumber and missing the crunch. The sauce I can't comment on because it was missing from the pack. Again they were busy and haven't got their work flow smoothed out yet so it would be easy to miss a little thing like the sauce. There was a wedge of lemon though so I squeezed that onto my little piece of dry fish! But overall a big disappointment. I think I'll be heading back to Kiwi Fish and Chips; they accept cards, the grilled fish is always moist and juicy, the serves of chips are generous (and a little chunkier perhaps )... and it's really not that far away.

New & Fresh!. Been watching the fitout of this place over the past
couple of months and finally got to try over the weekend.
Love the interior and the garlick grilled prawns!! Two thumbs up.

Great Richmond Fish & Chips...Finally!. Went here on the weekend....had a grilled flake cooked prefectly, potato cakes were A1 - crispy & salty on the outside with soft potato within and a refreshing fennel, orange & rocket salad.
The fitout is light & fresh - best fitout on Bridge Rd at the moment.
All in all it was a delicious meal....will be back!

Disappointing. Had been looking forward to fish and chips since this place opened. Flake was nice but potatoe cakes cold and chewy, market dim sims full of salt and cold,(Couldn't eat ). Chips under cooked but not too bad. 2 scollops and 2 calamari rings where nice. with a 600ml coke takeaway $50. So many cheap and great takeaway options in Bridge Rd, Wont do that agian.

Unfortunately this was disappointing. We have been looking forward to this place opening and we went for fish and chips. Really long wait for our food, small serves and ordinary taste.
The female waitress was really helpful but the guy had no idea what he was doing.
The queue for take away was really long and they seemed to be disorganised.
We will try again but they need to organise the place better...

New waste of space?. These guys have some ideas. Deep fried mars bars for example... but not much idea how to make a "fish burger". they should call it "lettuce burger". i would write this burger up as follows:
stale, white sesame seed bun with lashings of margerine. a 1mm slice of coon cheese topped with 200 grams of fresh lettuce. garnished with grilled fish and old tomato, then finished with a cheap tartare sauce. delivered with a generous side of undercooked mccain chips. granted $14 takeaway isn't the best judge of a place- i'm just reporting the facts here.

Inside, the Fish Market is a pleasant, light-filled space with happy yellow accents from the stools and a long, striped communal table. It feels like a slick beach-side joint, and is a relaxing place to be in.

My new favourite fish stop!! Super fresh and super healthy – bring the fish market to Bridge Road and then putting a burger bar in it!! It’s like two geniuses collided and thought “what does Bridge Road need” And now we have it!! So you can select from the array of fresh, lovely fish at the fish bar and take home oysters, snapper and more to cook up at home OR they can cook a little something up for you! The fish and burger bar will provide grilled or fried fish packs to enjoy, burgers galore with beef and bacon, traditional, beef inferno, chicken and of course Fish! And the grilled fish burger. Firstly, it is massive!! You could easily share with a friend! Secondly, it is gorgeous. Big fillers of grilled fish with salad and tartare……. Perfection. Teamed with a big old box of sweet potato fries for the team and we add feeling super healthy and super naughty all at the same time!! Yum!!!

The Fish Market is surprisingly spacious, with the usual ordering and frying up area out front, but plenty of seating out back as well. A small, but concise menu makes decision making quick and easy.
