Review Phuoc Thanh - Richmond

Keegan McDermott
Top quality bahn mi. The crispy pork is the speciality here. A good amount of meat, which is juicy and crisp. The rolls are well made, a nice balance of ingredients. Chilli packs a punch but not too hot, ask for more if you're a chilli fiend. The pateso (pork pastry) is decent but not amazing. A busy place but service is fast.

Great range of options to choose from, I bought ham roll and crispy pork roll. The roll were full with ingredients which is a plus. I like the pate and the pickle onions, it added some texture for the roll. The only downside was the crispy pork’s skin, I expected it to be more crispy. But in general, good stuffs at an affordable price.

My photo's say it all, the best Banh Mi. Yes there is a line up, even after 2 hours when we where leaving Richmond the line up was the same because the Banh Mi is fantastic.

Best and hottest Vietnamese bread in Melbourne. Only tried Pork Salad. Service is great, someone jumped a queue before me and they were paying enough attention to set the order straight

I love this place! Highly recommend Grilled bbq pork. Crispy pork also is very popular too(when I’m in the line, most of customers order crispy pork) But sometimes the taste depends on the person who is handling your order. It’s good tho😋

Love their banh mi’s! The baguette is very fluffy and airy! I love their crispy pork roll here, their regular cold cut pork roll is also good. Their pâté and bo (Vietnamese Mayo) is also tasty unlike other places that has no flavour. They do have long queues though, but it is worth a bit of the wait.

This place is definitely one of the best in Melbourne. Good price, fresh Ingredients and tasty unique desserts. Although their crispy pork was delicious, their grilled chicken is the best option.

This morning I went and purchased for two crispy pork roll, I had to wait at least more than 10 minutes and they did not tell me why I had to wait, they took the two bread roll to the back and then came back, I receive my bread roll when I got back to my work, I ate a cup of mouthful, it tastes extremely fatty and then I looked into my bread roll, there was just fat crispy skin and chunky fats and there was any meat in them, I have taken photos of that, I bought two crispy pork rolls of this and they’re course $9 dollars each, I believe that’s a lot of money for a role, and the fact that there is hardly any meat, I’ll probably wouldn’t eat there again or purchase any meat bread roll from your place again ,would like to be refunded .

Best (Vietnamese), or for that matter sub-sandwiches in town at a bargain price!!! People who run the bakery are very friendly and the bread is baked fresh on prem!!!

Best pork and chicken rolls in da bizz

This bread shop bakes its own bread on site so you know that the bread rolls are always fresh.

So it was time to go back. The service was good and efficient.

My crispy pork bahn mi was fantastic, with some fresh salad and the pork was juicy and crispy. Yum! Not forgetting to mention my crispy roll. I would have liked some more spice but I should have asked for more.

My partners tofu salad roll was equally as good and we both polished off our banh mi's in no time.

This place is back, and its definitely worth a visit.

Last review - October 2019
I haven’t been here in a while so it was time to revisit this place. My last visit was definitely a 5/5 experience but this visit at lunchtime just didn’t hit the mark.

The service was very good, the bread roll was ok, and my pork belly, well it was really average and the salad just ok.

The roll overall tasted alright but I was asked if I wanted chilli and I said yes please w gusto haha. But maybe the waitress didn’t hear me because there was no spice.

I’ll go back once more, maybe, just in case I went on an average day but what I was hoping for crispy bread roll and spice, w some fresh salad. And that didn’t happen.

still, literally the best banh mi i’ve ever had in Melbourne!
tried the grilled chicken and grilled pork before, yum !
had this banh mi more than 3 times and never get bored.
from the fresh ingredients, the soft bread, their juicy meat, and the price is consider cheap!!! ❤️❤️

I had the original Bahn mi omg... was delicious... it's the best in Melb indeed, so traditional that takes you back to Saigon street food... yum. It's fresh and it's busy place at the moment, I guess locals know where to go and go n try it out, you will not be disappointed.
PinkNectarine
If you’re black, they assume that some items should be omitted from your bahn mi as they assume you’re of a religion that doesn’t eat some ingredients. I was in the shop at the same time as another lady who ordered the same item as I did and when I asked why they’d been made differently, their response was “because she’s Asian” and “some religions don’t eat some ingredients”. Very racist and very lazy behaviour. They could easily ask but instead they choose to assume.

I had major pork roll cravings on my once a week walk during isolation. When I saw this place with a line, I joined it. While the banh mi was filling and the bread was fresh, it didn't satisfy my cravings. It was good but I've had better elsewhere. I wish there were some pickled radishes for crunch and tang.
Jonliu91
Best banh mi in melbourne!!
Thuy Lu
Best banh mi! Must order the crispy pork roll. Service can be a little slow but it’s worth the wait.
Jeremy Wat
Best Banh Mi in Melbourne. Our family always comes back and this place never fails to deliver. Highly recommend cold pork, grilled pork and grilled chicken salad rolls.
Vivian
Some of the yummiest fob rolls I’ve had! The bread is so crunchy and they give you ample amount of filling . They are also generous on the pate and egg butter . The roast pork is so crispy and grilled chicken to die for

I have been going to Phuoc Thanh Bakery for over 10 years and it has never disappointed, but of course due to inflation etc prices of their infamous Banh Mi has increased slightly but definitely way cheaper than CBD/city prices and often or not they more fusionized and not so authentic.
I absolutely love Banh Mi especially when the bread roll is freshly made and super crispy/crunchy and with the right about of filling/meat inside.

🔆LOCATION🔆
Phuoc Thanh Bakery is located in the heart of Victoria St, right next to the large Richmond Asian Grocery Supermarket at the traffic lights. You can easily pass by without noticing it so my indicator is always to keep eye out on the large asian supermarket next to the traffic lights haha!

🔆SERVICE🔆
The ladies working at Phuoc Thanh Bakery are friendly, but often or not when its been a super long day and when its busy, their smile is a bit lacking but that is understandable. They're on their feet all day and the Bakery opens at 5.30am so you can imagine.

🔆MENU/PRICE🔆

I always order the classic Pork Banh Mi, however there is more Pork variety/options now that you select from.
* Crispy Roast Pork
* Roast Pork (char sui)
* Shredded Pork
* Pork Skewers

Standard Pork Banh Mi now costs $5.50
If you like crispy roast Bork Banh mi, that costs $6.50

🔆VERDICT🔆

Pork Salad Banh Mi all the way! Yummylicious!

I love the traditional pork banh mi which has the traditional pork cold cuts - sliced pork, pork sausauge, with traditional liver pate smeared on inner side of the bread roll and mayonnaise butter on the other side with pickled carrots, pickled radish, cucumber and coriander.
The Vietnamese bread roll is of a decent size and so are the filling. Wish they could add more coriander and 1 more slice of cucumber. Yum! haha!

Small place to order fresh banh mi. A bit worried as the doors are open all the time with flies in the shop.
Can't go wrong with banh mi and quick to order.
Joanne | Melbournecitay
There is limited space to eat in this bakery which is the one big downer of coming here. The crispy pork Bahn mi was delicious though. At $6.50, it was also an affordable lunch option. I was very full at the end of the meal. To say that it’s much better than other Bahn mis? I’m not very sure.

We had to travel a bit to get here and there was a long queue when we arrived. Despite that the staff were very efficient at serving us and I got my Bhan Mi in no time. I ordered the grilled chicken bahn mi, and let me tell you, it’s on another level.

The bread has a crunchy exterior without being too dry or hard. The grilled chicken was cooked to perfection, very juicy and flavorful and the sauces they used were amazing. The carrots and other vegetables were undoubtly fresh and really adds to the overall deliciousness if the dish. For this extremely satisfying meal, the price was really gokd and I will definitely come back for more.
Brian Kim
Not that I've ever had a bad Bahn mi, but this place is amazing. Pork on skewer with chilli is not overpowering in taste at all, and the liver pate was great.
Angelo Pinnaduwa
Went for this spot for lunch just now to fulfill my cravings for Bahn MI. Quite cheap and you could get a filling meal with the goodness of veggies and protein. Highly recommended!
Sunny Days Melbourne
This place was bustling, even though it was late in the afternoon when we decided to give their famous Banh mi a go.

I think the main point of difference at this joint is the super generous amount of fillings which they carefully stuff into the crusty bread rolls. The pork roll was certainly overflowing with meat and vegetables. I would have liked a bit more pate in the mix but that is just a personal preference.

The grilled chicken Banh mi was once again full of meat and other good things - should have eaten it immediately because the roll was slightly soggy by the time I got home.

Service was efficient and pleasant. Their high score is well deserved.
Crabapples For Lunch
We bought 4 bread rolls here for only $1.50. Although other reviewers liked the quality of the bread here, the ones we got weren't crispy or flaky on the outside, and also quite dry on the inside. The main positive is it's price but I would not have particularly liked it if it was used for a Vietnamese roll. That said, it does taste better after you've put it in the oven yourself.

On another occasion we tried the BBQ pork puff here and it was also pretty good value for $1.50. The pastry was quite light and crispy and the filling was a mix of pork and vegetables. I haven't yet tried their Vietnamese rolls but the meats on display look very good and I'm looking forward to trying that soon.
Kevin Lambchops
Fob rolls so good, makes me feel fob again 11/10
Would highly recommend! Service is great also and has the authentic taste of Vietnam.
Beats Nhu Lan 100%
Celine Kurniawan
Soft and crispy bread, very rich and flavoured, love the kick of spice in the filling. Loveee lovee the overall taste to this.
Ordered:grilled chicken, crispy pork, grilled pork
Isaiah Young
Yum the bread is good. best banh mi ever. i want one right now. i love the grilled chicken banh mi the most. i usually get two because they are so good.
Ignatia
Good but not as good as I expected... probably because of the high rating that leads to high expectation. But considering I came here half an hour before closing, bread was still crispy which is good — as I’ve had stale bahn mi before. It’s nice but I can’t say it’s “the best bahn mi in Melbourne”.
Steven Gu
Phouc Thanh in Richmond definitely thumbs up a five for the pork roll. Must try the pork skewer roll. It is so popular and always sold out quickly. Vietnamese roll is my favourite bread roll.
Tony Barnes
Crispy Pork Banh Mi sooooooo good. Nice crusty bread roll; tasty pâté; very generous with the crispy pork, Quite a line in there at lunchtime - not surprising! Great value too at $6.50... will be back.
Lisa Giles
This place is rated highly for a reason. We tried a sample of different bahn mi’s; the crispy pork, grilled pork with salad and grilled chicken. Everything was just delightful. The sauces were insanely good, and the ratio of filling to bread was perfect. Plus the meat wasn’t fatty at all. Couldn’t fault any of them, but my personal favorite was the grilled pork! Will definitely be returning here for my bahn mi fixes.
Quince And Cheese
Vegans don't be fooled- this place may not offer veggie bahn mi options on their menu, but they actually make a killer tofu roll. Tofu didn't look great at first, but looks can be deceiving. It's marinated in a broth that's sweet but not overly so and slightly sour. The roll is stuffed full of all sorts of pickled and raw veg (including tomatoes), then topped with fried onions, spices and some undisclosed dressing (chilli optional). It's the most flavourful bahn mi I've ever had, and my new top pick for Victoria Street.
Robocop
Believe the hype !
Absolutely delicious roll - I haven’t tried every bakery on Victoria Street but I probably won’t go anywhere else.
$5.50 is a fair price for deliciousness.
Nicole
I decided to try Phuoc Thanh after seeing the great rating and reviews on Zomato.
I ordered the Crispy Pork Banh Mi. It was full of flavour and had a generous amount of pork, although it wasn’t as crispy as I hoped. I would of liked some more salad too, but overall it was a yummy, filling lunch at a reasonable price of $6.50.
Staff were friendly and service was prompt.
Suzysays
The rolls here tastes different to nhu lan a few metres down so it’s hard to say which is better. It’s really good in its own way! The bread is so crispy and the meat is fresh and filling is generous. They also take card payment which is good when you don’t have cash on you.
Two Sheds
4.6, right on its current rating. I sought this place out because of its lofty rating and glowing reviews. This is a fantastic little bakery. Not overhyped in the slightest. The bahh min is absolutely incredible. I had the pork skewer and salad one. It was spectacularly good. A great roll that was just bursting with texture and flavour, especially from the pork and chilli. It had thrilling flavour with fantastic length. I’m a little sad now because I may never taste its equal. I’d be interested if anyone else thinks there’s a better bahn min in Melbourne than the ones they do here. On what I had here today, eating here at least once is one of those must do Melbourne experiences. Do not hesitate to seek this place out.

Great place to come for a crispy pork bahn mi, used to be a regular but haven’t been here in a while..
However this time the skin wasn’t as crisp and the bun was a bit soggy.. Still good though just not as good.. One of my favourite places to come for a quick snack..

Great banh mi with various options of fillings. it is also so reasonable, in terms of pricing. Good choice for quick and cheap meal. The best banh mi's in Melbourne
FOOD TRIP
Phuoc Thanh is a little bakery on Victoria Street that specialises in Vietnamese bread rolls. Prices are reasonable and there is an assortment of varieties to choose from. Love the amazingly crispy bread. Would recommend!. Pork Salad Roll $5.50. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!. The best bread roll ever! So light and yet so crispy. Good fillings too! ★★★★☆
MELBFOODIEEE
the delicious banh mi you can find in melbourne - shame that they raised their prices again, but still such a bargain. i brought a salad roll, (not plain AT all, so flavourful and make sure you get it with chilli!) some sort of yellow bean glutinous ball for $1.50, (which didn’t actually seem to have any filling in it, i should have gotten the red bean one. it was a bit oily and hard too, i’ve had better in glen waverley) and impulsively also got a pre-packaged bundle of two slices of their pandan rice flour cake for $3. the slices were massive but unfortunately were quite dry and flavourless, i’m going to try to see if heating them up will make a difference! overall, i think their banh mi is the best and only mind-blowing item in the store - for less than $5 too!
Stelly
One of the best places for Vietnamese banh mi around town! Fresh, tasty, and a very generous amount of meat and filling! A satisfying and delicious meal for only around $5. Definitely worth visiting if you’re in Richmond!

An unassuming Vietnamese eatery situated in Richmond's neck of the woods, but they make the meanest banhmi I've ever had in Melbourne (well, anywhere even!). There are a few banhmi options (including baked goods and snacks), but to go past their crispy pork belly banhmi would be an ultimate foodie sin.

Each sandwich cost $6 cheap, but this one has an extra score in terms of originality thanks to the presence of their home made crispy pork bellies and buttery mayo-pate. Generously garnished with whole lotta veggies, amazing kicks from the red bird eye chilies and I was quite fond of their baguette as well, so crunchy and fresh. A must must try!!

Phuoc Thanh might be humble on space and serves purely to-go basis. Also, be prepared to wait in lines as this being a popular spot with both locals and tourists. But that aside, the food was superb, the staffs are full of smiles - An excellent spot in Richmond to fill up on the cheap.

I’ve been coming to this place for years, long before the era of online reviews and I agree with others who said this shop is one of the best for banh mi in Melbourne! Amazing chicken roll, the filling is generous and tasty.
Sivashankar Sivam
My favorite bahn mi place hands down!

$5 for a hearty meal. You can’t go wrong. Full of meat, full of flavour and definitely cracks a good bite.

Other than the fact that the servers hardly ever smile, the food makes you smile endlessly.

Best Banh Mi in Melbourne!!! All fresh ingredients and all made in house! When all combined create a super Banh Mi, when you eat it close your eyes to be transported to Vietnam! Thanks to the owners of this fantastic bakery, you are the best in Town!
Hannah Miles
Amazing! Fresh and extremely tasty!! Would definitely recommend visiting this place! Friendly and welcoming and delicious! Must visit when in Richmond or make the trip especially for it!

Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Good ol' no nonsense Vietnamese food in the heart of Victoria St. We ordered the crispy pork banh mi and it was fresh, full of flavour and had a good kick of spice. Our only slight critique would be that we wished there was a little more generosity with the crispy pork filling.

Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Service was quick. Fortunately for us we got in a little earlier as a line quick formed after we placed our order.

Price: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Well priced for the service and quality of the meal.
Famous for traditional Vietnamese bread roll-Banh Mi. They do sell some bread, and packed sweets/desserts but I would go there for the Banh Mi only. There were no seats in the store, it was more like a take away fast food place. They moved fast, and served quick, and all the Banh Mi was in good price and large sizes.
I loved the Vietnamese coffee, with stronger flavour and sweeter taste.

There was like 10 different flavours of Banh Mi. Among the flavours that I tried, the meat ball, roasted chicken were pretty good. Of course, you shouldn’t miss the crispy pork. Each Banh Mi bread roll had perfect crunchy crust but such soft inside. All the meats cooked well with deep flavours. The extra topping such as the sweet and sour pickled vegetables, meat/liver pate added extra taste and texture into the bread roll! Such a quick and simple, yet delicious choice for a lunch fix!
This place could rated one of the best Banh Mi in Melbourne for sure.

Best Banh Mi I have eaten in Melbourne.
All the flavours work so well together and the sauce just makes it perfect!
So sad I have to drive 40 minutes to get it but that doesn’t stop me!

A great place for quick and filling Banh Mi

Ambience: The place is brigthly lit. There was only one table available and a small counter next to the window with stools and they're bit messy. Also it can be uncomfortable to sit near the window when the sun is shining as it can get really hot.

Service: They service was quick and the staffs are pretty friendly, though the first one to take my order doesn't really speaks english so she asked her workmate to serve me instead. Nevertheless the banhmi was in my hand in abiut a minute.

Food: I had a pork banh mi and the filling is definitely generous. The bun itself is really good, crunchy on the outside, airy and soft inside. Overall great combination with the meat and vegs and sauce although it'll be nice if there are more pate (my preference) and that the pork is better marinated.

Price: For a fullfilling meal like this, $5 is a steal! Altho again for banh mi, it's an average price.

YUM: none
NAH: none

xx、 joelle

Probably my favorite place for banh mi!!! Chicken is juicy and bread is crispy. The pate and sauce mixed extremely well together. And the sprinkle of onion on top is just on point 👌👌👌

First time here. I had a grilled pork banh my, which was seriously good. It’s also huge and very filling. Roll is soft inside, flavor is well-balanced but can use a little more spice. The lady who served me was smiling and very pleasant. Overall, this is the best $5 I have ever spent and will come back for sure!
Eatingmakesmehappy
I am a big fan of Vietnamese bread roll and I have to say bread rolls here are absolutely amazing. Grilled pork is my favorite. The sauce is the soul of it. And it’s only $5 while it tastes better than many other more expensive ones in CBD. Wish they could have a branch in CBD so I can get the yummy bread roll more easily:)

Order: #3 Xuong nuong/Grilled pork salad roll. As for the bread itself, it’s the closest thing I’ve tasted in Melbourne to real Saigon bread roll. It has the same scent. With the combination of patê and homemade butter, it really takes me back. The meat could’ve been better marinated, it lacked in taste especially with the larger pieces of meat and where the added sauces did not hit. The sauces was just simple soya and oyster, nothing special. Overall, you really get a big portion for the price you pay compared to other places. This roll really brings out the taste of Saigon, which is why I liked it a lot. Would recommend!

Classic favourite 😁😁 always come for my rolls since i was little back then it was only $2 per roll (hope that doesn’t give away my age) :P Been return customer for so many yrs do I need to say more?!
Meeateor
A little grimy, a little dingy, (feels) a lot authentic. The banh mi thit ngui I had was pretty good - reasonable amount of sliced pork, pate, chilli and other fillings.
Icym88
Was charged $6 for a crispy pork roll today. Still unsure why after I enquired why it's usually less, I only asked for 'everything' which is standard including chilli. Check before ordering as crispy pork isn't on the menu board. Sadly they've lost a loyal customer. Plenty of other places to go for a great Bahn mi in Richmond with good customer service and reasonable prices.
FoodieLoveEatFood
Probably the place that I visited the most over the year. 😆 only 5-5.5 dollar u can get crispy, freshly baked bread, vegie and few choices of different meat. I like extra chill in it that kick make the whole bread even better! Get so satisfied every time i eat it. The best Vietnamese roll in Melbourne. But if you go end of the day the bread sometimes get not that fresh. Most of the time its perfect. There is one lady i always see in there very friendly 🌝
Ilovefoodsomuch
This is my go to place for Banh Mi and probably the best in Melbourne. Crispy bread and beautiful meat my favourite is the crispy pork but the chicken is also very nice.
Kotix
God the rolls are good here. Cheap as chips as well ranging from 5-6 bucks a roll. The meat fillings they use a amazing and the serving very generous. Best rolls I've had outside of Vietnam
Mini Mooi
This place used to be my everyday sandwich shop and I am very please to see it still there. My favourite was chicken grilled roll with chill and was $2.80. I was looking the few review and now it's cost $5. I guess cost of living is increasing every year.
I love to going back soon..

Went back again and was great
Monica Iva
Yup, its a winner crispy pork roll dinner. I get one every two weeks when I am over that way, I forgot how great they were until I stopped some at another place and cheated on these guys, sometimes you have to stray to know where home is.
Ricky S
Ok... I haven't been to Vietnam so I wouldn't be able to say whether this is authentic. But... Let me say if the authentic banh mi is as good as theirs... Then I would be very happy. Please please... Try the bread stick with pate... Its sooooo good....
Hnv
Hands down for the best pork roll in Richmond!!!! Crispy pork roll and normal ham pork roll are my all time favorite. They do orders over the phone, I usually call them up in the morning to order and pick up on my way to work.
Taeyeon's Hamster
One of my must go places whenever we drive past Richmond. Phuoc Thanh Bakery sells freshly made bread, pastry and other vietnamese desserts. From $4 to now $5 the Pork Salad Roll Bahn Mi is still one of my favourite and most reasonably priced place over these years. The flavoursome pork salad roll is filled with a decent amount of salad, pork and pâté spread. The bread roll itself is very fresh and crunchy. The bakery also sells a variety of desserts, from Vietnamese Fried Sesame Balls, Pandan Coconut Mochi and Pandan Layered dessert. Great quality food at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!
CheeseAndCrackers
The rating is real. Delicious, fresh, flavoursome Bahn Mi for $5. What more could you want?? Stacked full of ingredients with extra touches like fried shallots and chopping the spring onion up instead of chewing on a long stalk of it. The hit of chili is perfect too. Itvs the best!
Jonathan Ong
bahn mi here is great - the grilled chicken & grilled pork ones especially. the bread is much better than other places because it's soft and yet crispy and doesn't stick to the roof of your mouth. prices have steadily increase from $3.20 to $5 over the years
Oz SituAsian
I agree with all the positive reviews here. After extensive and rigorous research I am please to report this is the finest banh mi establishment in Melbourne. Let me enlighten you. First, every one gets pate. You don't need to beg for it (I'm looking at you Nhu Lan!). Second, they garnish their creations with spring onions and fried shallots. Third, if you ask for chilli they GIVE you chilli. You better be able to take spicy if you ask for chilli. Fourth, their rolls are, like me, above average in length. I normally need two banh mi's from other joints because I'm an above average eater but here, one is sufficient for me. Last but not least, their proteins are just as good as the restaurants. I rotate between grilled pork and the crispy roast pork (their cracking is actually crispy). No other place comes close in my opinion. You're welcome!
All Mountain Pass
God damn, GOD DAMN!
SO freaking good. The baguette is crispy in the outside and fluffy and delicious on the inside. The vegetables are pickled and add tang and the pate brings that magic out.
Love love love this place. Can't recommend it highly enough. And for $6 for their top end bahn mi, you'll be laughing out of the shop front.
Cynthia Giang
A known and trusted favourite. Banh mi thit was something I grew up on, and this is one I'd regularly come to buy from when I visited my grandma as a child. Generous filling with nice crispy outer and fluffy white bread. Add chilli for an extra kick!
Split The Bill
I have been coming to this bakery for years. Across the very competitive Victoria street this is the best place to get your Vietnamese banh mi roll. I have eaten most of the menu from the traditional pork, bbq chicken to my favourite meatball rolls. The roll are always fresh and crunchy and made on site, the service is quick and efficient for $5. This is not a cafe more of a bakery to enjoy a take away meal.

Just on a side note unfortunately Victoria Street attracts a few junkies so just a word of caution.
Mitochondria Powerhouse
Second best banh mi on Victoria street, they tend to be more generous in their fillings versus Nhu Lan, but I find the banh mis here to be less fresh tasting (that's not to say the ingredients they use here aren't fresh). Though everynow and again I will get their roast pork with crackling roll; last time I had it I felt the tingle of MSG on my lips - it was amazing. There is nothing wrong with MSG people!
Gee
Ah Victoria Street! I was craving some traditional Vietnamese and decided to brave the junkies and zombies that hang around this end (closest to Hoddle). $5 banh mih that is full of spicy deliciousness. Love it!
Chris Pantlin
The best Banh Mi on Victoria Street by a mile. Regular ate here for over 2 years and they were consistently on point. Rolls always fresh, and crunchy yet soft at the same time. Beautiful flavours.
Bella
I have definitely had my fair share of banh mi while living in Richmond. Phuoc thanh definitely offer the best value for money and tastiest with plenty of filling and generous portion of meat and for a measly $4.50.
Piyarat Pinthong
I always have Pork salad roll was so delicious, love it! I gave my family and boyfriend tried either.. they like it and wanna have again. 👌🏻👍🏻
Nicole Kitto
Best crispy pork rolls ever! They're good with both chilli and without the chilli - so it's worth trying out both, but unless you have a massive appetite, one roll is more than enough. It's incredibly filling and worth the price.

Me and my girlfriend have been eating fob rolls for a long time and have had a lot of bread rolls on victoria st, And this place is by far one of the best in richmond. The crisp of the bread and the flavour of the chicken is simply amazing. I recommend this place to first time bread roll eaters. 10/10
Lin Liu
I tried the salad bread roll which is very common and the red chilly inside is very spicy.
I have not tried other types.
The veg inside is not fresh.

Firstly, I have to admit my review of bread roll may be a bit biased. I was introduced bread roll by my partner, who deeply addicted to Nhu Lan bakery.

This week, he brought home two bags of bread rolls. He didn't tell us they were from the other store (Phuoc Thanh), but we could just tell it was from different shop. It turned out Nhu Lan bakery was closed for holiday.

The bread roll itself, in general, was still very very high standard. Bread was crunchy and the ingredients were very fresh. But the pate was just not as nice and the carrot and cucumber has not been pickled.

I know the comparison was rather pointless. There should be lot of different ways of making the same dish and same thing.

Therefore, I still think Phuoc Thanh is an outstanding bakery and we will come back.
Chris
$4.50 Bahn Mi which are amazing value! Full of fresh delicious ingredients and a tasty variety of meats. Best Bahn Mi rolls I have ever eaten. Would recommend take-away as the shop is small and is often busy, but it's worth the short wait for the rolls.

I want to give this place 6 stars. Got a BBQ pork banh mi and it was pure perfection. Crispy bread, fresh veg, coriander and chilli all in perfect proportions. 10/10. Made even better enjoyed a short stroll away at the convent.

This place is the BEST banh mi in the world! I've tried many places along Victoria St Richmond, Footscray, Springvale, Sunshine, St Albans, even Canada.. still unbeatable banh mi. Always get the chicken and meatball banh mi with the lot and chilli. The meat is always tender and flavoursome, hefty pate and other condiments, fresh and generous pickled vegetables and fresh herbs topped with homemade fried shallots.
I can eat them for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, Midnight snack, whenever. I love them so much, I had them on my hens' afternoon tea, after my wedding ceremony for tea..See, I'm addicted to their banh mi.

Best Banh Mi around! I have searched high and low for anything better, but this place quite simply can't be beaten. They also have a decent array of Vietnamese meals that are very authentic and tasty not to mention one of the better cinnamon doughnuts I have had for 60 cents

Victoria St Institution .... BEST $4.50 you could ever spend in Australia.

It has been there for more than 2 decades I think, we've been going there since the opening.

Always fresh and consistent.

I just can't believe it's only $4.50 for those delicious Banh Mi.

The only issue, not much space, so don't go in a group, so take-away and go somewhere else to enjoy it.

Thank you ..... for generously serving us foodies!

Probably one of my fav shops to buy the Vietnamese bread rolls. They do variations of the roll, you can also mix and match the ingredients to you liking. My normal order is still the original pork roll with chillies for the kick. These guys do it really well.
ElsewhereBriefly
Excellent value banh mi. $4.50 for a fresh baguette roll that's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a generous serve of tasty fillings. A good slather of pate, and fresh vegetables. The roast pork actually had crunchy skin, and wasn't too fatty. Great stuff! There is very limited seating, but it seems most of their business is takeaway anyway.
Kimosabe
The very best Vietnamese pork rolls imho.
Always the freshest ingredients and the bread rolls here are sublime. Light and crunchy.

Not bad Banh Mi. Generous fillings & the rolls are lovely. Lots of different options if you want a different type of bread roll. Overall not bad

$4.50. Crispiest bread you've ever eaten. Loads and loads of fresh pork.Lightly pickled carrot and cucumber.Mayonnaise and pate` .Delicious crispy fried onion pieces.Fresh spring onion. Bit of corriander. Fresh pounded chilli flakes. Swirl of BBQ sauce on top. This is the best value sandwich you're ever going to eat in your life

Best pork rolls in Melbourne, always fresh and tasty with a reasonable price. Get there early during lunch time as it can get busy, particularly on a weekday. Highly recommended.
Bill
Very fresh. Very tasty. Best pork rolls in Melbourne. At $4.50 each, great value for money. Always busy, take away only. Consistent every time we go!

I got the crispy pork banh mi today. It was every bit as yummy and porky as I wished. I was pleasantly surprised by the price especially being in Richmond at $5 it was the same as the crispy pork in Springvale. It was less saucy then the crispy pork banh mi at Golden Age in Springvale. I liked it being less saucy because I didn't feel yuck after eating it. I enjoyed the addition of fried shallots on the pork. The lady working there was smiling and friendly.

Phuoc me this place is phuocing good. I mean, this place is seriously good. Best Vietnamese rolls I've had! I'm having good flashbacks to this place.
Sammbo
Best place for pork rolls on Vic St, great price, always fresh and taste amazing. Go to favourite. They are ALWAYS busy which is always a good sign, especially when there are plenty of options on Vic St.
Shaun Kelly
Probably the most popular place for pork rolls on Victoria Street. Cheap and delicious. They also do meat pies but I have never had one, I can't not get a pork roll. Maybe I should get both one time.
Julie
Tried so many Vietnamese roll bakeries in Melbourne over the years and Phuoc thanh is definitely the best. My favourite is the mixed ham Vietnamese roll - very tasty and the bread is always fresh. My hubby and I come here every Sunday without fail - it's so delicious and authentic. There's always a line even when we go at 3pm but they're so efficient so you're never left waiting for long.

TASTE/FOOD - Best Vietnamese rolls in Melbourne by far (in my humble opinion :)

The carrots are marinated, spring onions sauted (I think - they do something with them to make them more tasty and less sharp), fried onion, coriander, cucumber (marinated also possibly) pate, good amount of well flavoured meat, 2 sauces, it all adds up to a flavour explosion!

Only downside is they have stopped selling most of the random buns in the glass display. They also sell a variety of items on their counter, I'm pretty sure they don't make those. they can be a bit hit and miss (I brought a dessert in a plastic container where I think the 'cook' confused salt with sugar - it was super salty)

VALUE- prices have gone up during the time that Ive been coming here but for ~$4.50 the rolls are great value

SERVICE- Friendly, fast, some of the staff have weak English but its good enough for ordering etc. They can get busy at times.

DECOR- nice enough, its a bakery.

COELIACS/GLUTEN/ALLERGIES - Take caution if you have allergies as this place (like all sandwich places) would have a high risk of cross contamination

WORTH GOING BACK? - Absolutely! The food is amazing and the price is great!

I try pork rolls pretty much whenever I find a bakery that sells them (Niddrie, Windsor, Springvale, Richmond, Caulfield, Moonee ponds etc) This place is hands down the best Vietnamese roll in Richmond and Melbourne that I have come across, and I've tried LOTS of places. If you know of a place that you think does better I would love to know because I dont think you can get better in Melbourne than Phuoc Thanh :)

Best Rolls in Melbourne
Ingredients are always fresh and only cost $4.50 a roll depending on the roll you order.
Nate
Best banh mi in Richmond! Consistently busy with locals, tradies, business people and people like myself who go there to get a banh mi pre or post pho. The chilli they put in is seriously hot so be careful not to accidentally eat a massive chunk even though it's hard not to devour these heavenly crispy tasty sandwiches in a couple of bites.

By far the best pork banh mi I have had the pleasure of having in Melbourne. The freshest ingredients coupled with a healthy dose of pork crackling..at a cheap price. Try this place, the constant lines, especially on the weekends, say it all.
Aly Zhang
Amazing, cheap and such hearty, filling portions. Yummy flavours, efficient service, and indeed, everyone in my family loves it! Highly recommend as a pit stop, their banh mis are on point.

This has now become an entree must with work colleagues on a Friday lunch out before either Pho or Bun Bo Hue!! yeah food coma!

The crispy pork Viet roll is a MUST. Add a bit of chillie for a kick. It's awesome!! Combination of traditional Viet roll with the crisp of the crispy pork roll!! my mouth is salivating already thinking of it!! and I'm not hungry! Compared to the other bakeries along the stretch of shops on Victoria st this is by far the best IMHO. Nhu Lan is also popular but my preference is still Phuoc's cus of the bread roll itself.
Genevieve Clare Dickson
The best $4.50 you will ever spend. Sadly I can no longer enjoy the crunchy/soft bread roll, but the owners obliged me by filling my own GF rolls with their delicious grilled pork and salad. Would rate higher if I could

Yummy! So tasty! Unbelievable! I travelled from CBD for a long distance. But it deserves! I wish that you can open a branch store in CBD! Then I will come here every day...

Two great things about this place. Firstly, it's the taste of the rolls. Some may not agree with me but personally I find their rolls taste even better than their nearby competitor - Nhu Lan Bakery, especially their BBQ pork rolls. Another great thing about this bakery is that they do serve mini banh mi, which costed $2.5 each last time I went their. The size of these rolls are perfect for snacks and allow you to try different flavours before your stomach is fully stacked. For a cheap, taste and quick meal, I can't recommend this place enough.
ALWAYS HUNGRY
For me Phuoc Thanh is the best bakery on Victoria St. At $4 for their rolls, you can't really complain can you? Fillings to the brim unlike some of the other bakeries around who would seemingly be skimping. If you come on the weekend they have their 'Special' crispy roast pork rolls for $4.50.. you won't regret it!
Zardoz
Good, but by no means the best, banh mi in Melbourne. Flavours weren't as sharp as they really needed to be. Excellent iced coffee but and all very cheap.
Kate Derry
Excellent bahn mi, zero complaints with any of the ingredients or procedure and unbelievable value. The store is only very small and simple, basically take away only.
Definitely check it out if you love Vietnamese rolls!!
My Babes And I
My babes and I had to wait another couple of hours for my mums delayed eye surgery to be completed before we pick her up. We started getting hungry and the hospital was in East Melbourne so we decided to head down Victoria Parade to Richmond in search of some late lunch. We were looking for something quick and easy to eat so I decided that we'll have a couple of Vietnamese salad rolls from my favourite Banh Mi bakery in Richmond; Phuoc Thanh.
We arrived after 2 PM on a weekday afternoon so I wasn't surprised that most of the fillings were sold out by now! I ordered a Roast Pork Banh Mi and my babes ordered a Chicken Banh Mi. I absolutely love the Crispy Skin Roast Pork here but the lady serving us informed me that there wasn't enough roast pork for my Banh Mi! Sensing that I was a bit disappointed, she offered to fill the rest of the roll up with Grilled Pork, which, although not ideal, sounded like a fair solution to me.
In my opinion, the best part of eating a Banh Mi is the first bite! My teeth crunch through the thin, but crispy, crust of the Vietnamese baguette into the soft and fluffy dough within. The flavourful, and very tender, roast/grilled pork is enhanced by the pork liver pate spread and soy sauce drizzled over the meat. The fresh cucumber, carrot and coriander act as a counter balance to the heat of the thinly cut Bird's eye chilli and the spice of the white pepper, ensuring that no mouthful gets too hot to handle. Every now and again, I'd crunch down on a bit of crackling which is the 'cherry on top' and adds to the list of why this is my favourite Banh Mi! I absolutely love the intense flavours of every bite and once I finish my roll, I immediately wish I had another!
My babes hasn't tried a Banh Mi from here before so she was a bit sceptical when I brought her to Phuoc Thanh. But once she had her Banh Mi, she agreed that it was one of the best she's had in Melbourne and we definitely should come back again!
The baked daily Vietnamese rolls, freshest vegetables, perfectly cooked meats, friendly staff and, at $4 a roll, great value for money makes Phuoc Thanh the best Banh Mi's I've ever had in Melbourne! Although there's around half a dozen other Vietnamese bakeries down Victoria Street, I'll always go to Phuoc Thanh for my Banh Mi whenever I'm near Richmond!

I got there an hour before closing time, and they had already run out of most items; I should have taken reports of their popularity more seriously, that too during the weekend. This was going to be my introduction to Bánh mì, or Vietnamese-style sandwich. Tried the Grilled Pork Salad Roll ($4.00) and was thoroughly impressed - the size of the sandwich, the overflowing amount of meat, and the taste of it all coming together along with the salad vegetables. The baguette/bread was not as hard as it looked, in fact it was quite airy. I would love to be back for more!
Blingerz
Always friendly service and easily the best fob rolls in Richmond - possibly Melbourne. Fresh and generous servings each and every time! Will definitely go back.

Amazing crispy pork roll !. The crispy pork roll is so good. Easily the best pork roll in Melbourne.
Crispy pork roll has gone up by 50c to $5 ! Wow, that's still not gonna stop me from coming back for it once a week. The taste is awesome, saucing and filling are incredibly fresh and staff are friendly. Where in Melbourne could you have such a delicious hearty lunch and not break the bank?
Nancy G
Amazing bahn mi! I'm vegetarian and they had marinated tofu and made me a salad roll with all the trimmings. All the vegetables are so fresh and, yes, they fill the rolls to the brim!! The bread was lovely and crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. Perfect. And $4 for a sandwich in Melbourne? Need I say more! Such friendly staff too. Check it out!!
Au.claw
THere are plenty of options in vic street but the combination of the fresh vegetables, the combination of sauces and the warm fresh buns makes this one of my favourite places and I recommend this to everyone.

Recommended. Best Banh Mi in Melbourne.

Best in town. I've been working in the area for 10 years and being a Vietnamese myself, can guarantee it is the best for the best price both in flavour and quantity. Always the place where I roll!
Kj_44
Best (and most generous) banh mi in the city!. I had the grilled pork banh mi today, and let me tell you, it blows the socks off their competition. For only $4, it was simply crammed full of delicious, fresh ingredients and tasted amazing. I occasionally grab a banh mi from N Lee on Smith Street or Nhu Lan in Footscray, and both of their servings are paltry compared to here. The staff were very friendly too, and the whole place looked impeccably clean. You have to go here, you won't look back!
Forever_sd7
Pork Banh Mi, Grilled Chicken Banh Mi. It is awesome
Andy.holland
Banh Zai !. Ive tried them all, but Phuoc Thanh is the best Banh Mi on Victoria Street, and there's a lot of competition. It does help if you are a regular :-)
Mr X
Best Bhan Mi on Victoria St hands down.
D-ka
Best banh mi. This happened to be the first banh mi i tried when i arrived in melbourne several years ago and became an instant regular! one of the best parts is that it is delicious, still down to earth, and not a victim of the banh mi trend. baguettes have perfect crust and sandwich is well seasoned. although i have since moved to brisbane, i still make sure to visit when back in town!

Can't go wrong. 4 dollars for a freshly baked bun stuffed with the most delicious ingredients vic st has to offer. simply awesome

Love it!. I've had Vietnamese rolls in the past but this is right up there - fresh and very generous serving . If you like Viet rolls, you have to try one from this place.
The Taco Cat
The banh mi thit here is simply amazing. Warm and crispy bread rolls, great balance of fillings and sauce. Better than Fresh Chilli Deli? Absolutely.

Best Tofu Bahn Mi in the world!!
Dr Appetite
Best banh mi. Phuoc thanh has tasty Vietnamese subs (grilled chicken and pork are our favorites) for less than $4. Can't beat that.

My wife is picky about bread, and she loves that it's crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. Go there almost every weekend.
KDM
Firstly, bread is great!! Crisp outside and soft inside.
(Some other shop's breads are too dry or soggy or bit small) Also they have wholemeal bread roll option too.
I prefer normal bread roll though.

And filling is also nice and yummy.
I went there to get the Bahn mi every week :)

My favourite vietnamese roll shop on Victoria Street.
I believe this is The Best Bahn mi in Melbourne.
Ryan
Best bahn mi on Vic st. Great bread
Nean
Not bad but not great. Your average bahn mi joint. Not impressed when they wouldn't sell me plain rolls (for a picnic) as they said they needed them to make bahn mi. I guess bakeries don't sell just bread these days ?

What I like about Phuoc Thanh is that it looks extremely clean (preserved meats cut and lying around breeds paranoia for food-poisoning if not actual food-poisoning), the paté is a normal purply colour (as opposed to sometimes being funny bright pink-ish hue which is reminiscent of uncooked liver and salmonella), and the staff are cheerful, friendly, and patient to a lost non-Vietnamese customer (myself).
FoodieAboutTown
Nothing fancy, just good food, done well. Piles of grilled pork, coriander, chillies and heaps of beautiful fresh baguettes! The result? Pretty darn good! Great level if chilli, good quality pork and perfect crunchy and soft baguette – no gum graters here!! Cheap and cheerful – how can you resist?

I've been here multiple times and each time I haven't been disappointed. The texture of the bread rolls have been consistently crunchy with a soft and fluffy interior.
