Review The London Tavern Hotel - Richmond

Stella Bowker
Fantastic local pub. Awesome food -large portions and great value. Great beer garden and friendly staff. Beer is very fresh and cold. Highly recommended 👍
Toby Halligan
Great sports pub - five TVs in the back - very good for a beer on game days.
Moggy V
Warm and friendly staff. The menu is excellent with a great range of food options. Great to visit just for a drink and a bite to eat. The memorabilia on show is must-see for all footy fans (especially Richmond Tiger fans). Come in and check it out on your way to the footy at the MCG especially if you're passing through Richmond.

Great Guinness good atmosphere staff very friendly foods fresh open fire is great highly recommend to anyone

Place was packed when I was here a few weeks ago! It’s a classic pub. Great for a feed and to watch the footy. Food and drinks were decent too! ☺️
Esseland T
Great pub to watch sports and knocking back a few beers. Food standards have dropped over the year's. Though not terrible but it's pretty average. But I do like the fact there's a hole in wall where you can get good coffee
David Parlby
Best place to visit before the footy. Give the steak sandwich a go

Have a large courtyard that you can access from the outside - but despite this they still aren't dog friendly. Very disappointing - many other pubs in the area are dog friendly so the London misses out on my coin!
Emma Louise
This is such a great venue to watch the footy at! It’s got such a buzz on game day especially when Richmond are playing! The food is highly recommended however the staffing isn’t so much!

My partner and I called into this pub as we hadn’t been here before.

From the outside this looks like a great old school pub and that’s what it’s like inside in some parts of the pub, except for the huge Carlton Brewery kegs.

The beers on tap are pretty limited so I had a Melbourne Bitter for the first time and surprisingly it was pretty good.

My partner enjoyed a pirate bay beer which was good too.

I had a look at the dinner menu as there is a ginormous outdoor undercover seating area which looked alright.

But the entrees were about $15 plus and the mains closer to $30 each for pub food. So we decided to go somewhere else hahaha

Who doesn't like a parma and especially when they are $12. Normally would save it for a winter meal but it was a balmy night and when I arrived saw someone else's order arrive and it looked mouth watering. When mine arrived - tasted even better, particularly as I sat outside in the outdoor area and soaked up the last warmth of summer and finished off the last of the salad and chips on my plate. The menu is pretty good and there is something for everyone. Typical pub food presentation but it's what you should expect so don't get your hopes up for some high end food. This is real pub meals. Service was quick as well. Prices for drinks pretty reasonable.

Kids welcome. Dietaries catered for. Wheelchair and disability friendly. Parking isn't too bad, just watch those signs as the inspectors are pretty quick here.

We came to the London Tavern Hotel yesterday for their $12 Parma night. It was a warm night and we were sat in their very large outdoor area, which was lovely.

Drinks were reasonably priced; they were advertising a pint of Furphy for $9. We all got the $12 Parmas. The staff were happy to serve mine with double salad, no chips.

The Parmas were good but not amazing. The crumbs were quite soggy and there was no ham. Luckily the salad was fresh, the Parmas were saucy and my friends said the chips were delicious. All things considered, it was an enjoyable meal. In terms of value for money, I think you will find it difficult to beat this Parma.

Beef rendang curry with rice: well spiced, lots of flavour and nice tender beef. Decent serving size and food was brought out very quickly even though they were quite busy. $21 reasonable, but would have liked it to come with a little naan bread which would have made it even better.
Emma Louise
This is our local pub and it’s fabulous pub especially for the footy however there is one massive issue with it! THE STAFF! The food is absolutely great! Very high quality standard food. But the girls who take your order have the biggest attitude problems, it doesn’t matter how polite you are they are rude!!
Melanie Martin
We head here occasionally for their Chicken Parma night. The serves are really decently sized, they have the option of veggies instead of salad, plus there is an open fire place.

The London Tavern ain't pretty but there is a fair amount of history behind those ugly bricks. I've been here for many a football game and there are plenty of viewing areas so it's easy to see a screen from various vantage points. I generally come here for a lunch for those early afternoon games.

Food wise it's ok here. Nothing too gourmet but reasonable pub food. I normally go a parma. Beer is also pretty standard with few surprises.

Went to The London Tavern on Grand Final day, waited about 1.5 hours in line which was fine as we expected this for Grand Final day.
Ordering food and drinks was quick too considering how big the crowd was.
Great atmosphere.
Good Food Good Mood
I found myself at this establishment on a Friday night, and believe me it was entirely not of my own accord. Upon arrival I saw an ambulance that appeared to be carting off an intoxicated patron and realised how seriously this was not my scene. This is the kind of pub that I don't enjoy. There was a group of eight of us for dinner and we sat inside which was quite chilly. I hear there's a large beer garden out the back but didn't venture there. The Parma was serviceable but the atmosphere really didn't do it for me. There are far nicer pubs in Richmond to watch the footy

Came here today for pre-footy lunch with family and friends. I found the food to be very average. I had a bite of a chicken schnitzel and it was extremely under-seasoned although was a big portion (not heavily breaded) and lots of meat. I shared the saganaki plate, salt and pepper calamari and the spicy Thai sweet potato soup with my partner. They were all decent but the standout was the soup- it was very tasty and just the right amount of spice. I mark this place down because it took FOREVER for food to arrive that we were still eating when the game kicked off and we had arrived just past 12pm. Mind you that the place wasn't as full as it normally would be as it was close to the game and most tables had cleared out but food took way too long to come out.

The London Tavern is the perfect spot to pop into for pre footy drinks and snacks. They have a huge beer garden which I can't wait to enjoy in summer and a great selection of beer and food to keep you going before and after the game. We spent the afternoon sipping on beers and snacking on the grazing platter and it was 👌

Came with a booking of 12 on a Friday night and was pretty loud whilst the footy was on and people were yelling.
I ordered the Malaysian chicken curry with rice and a side of roti. The curry tasted nice with tender chicken but the rice was glaggy, and the foto was pretty good. Fast, efficient service and decent prices with average food and debatable atmosphere.
Lachlan Chan
Good chicken parma but nothing much else great about this restaurant. Bit pricey for the quality and there is better western food elsewhere. Pub is good though, can watch the footy while you eat but the food needs improving

The $10 Monday Parma special is fantastic. I look forward to Monday dinners, always a delight at the London. The Parma isn't greasy, it's juicy and very tender and a great size for the price.
Steve Cox
It has all the ambiance of a shearing shed. Unbearably noisy as the acoustics are shocking. Awful hipster music blaring for the enjoyment of the staff alone. At one stage the three barmaids staged a very loud mock argument in which the blond one with a ponytail shouted obscenities. I ordered a chicken parmigiana. When it arrived it was burnt black around the edges. It was dry and tasteless - it was a bit like eating a shoe. Beside it was a small bowl of over-oily spinach leaves and a chunk of tomato. This cost $22. The hand dryer in the men's toilet has never worked in several months. Very often i have been served a pint of beer that rests a full half inch down from the rim. It's quite appalling.

I thought a pub would be lacking for vegetarian options, but I was very pleasantly surprised. London Tavern offered some really interesting vegetables on their menu, including the cauliflower fried "rice" on lettuce cups which I ordered. Very tasty indeed. My friend's steak was cooked just as she asked as well and the sides were lovely. A great place to have a relaxed dinner out with a beer.
Trading Plates
If you haven’t been to The London Tavern for awhile, you may be pleasantly surprised by the most recent menu. While the food has always been solid at The London, the beef burger on the current menu is a real winner. The perfect combination of a classic Aussie burger and the in-vogue American version we have seen so much of lately, this is a burger to enjoy for lunch, dinner or anywhere in between.

This has been one of my favourite pubs for many years, so was looking forward to taking some friends visiting from interstate here for lunch.
One friend cannot eat shellfish, but wanted the salmon dish (which came with prawns and a seafood dressing). She politely requested if she could just have the salmon pan fried with chips and simple salad instead. The waitress first said no, then agreed if my friend paid would pay an extra $6 for the salad, which would bring the dish close to $40.
After insisting she check with the chef, she reluctantly stomped off to ask and finally all was sorted (or so we thought).
15 minutes after everyone else had finished their meals, hers finally arrived, and looked like this.
Really disappointing service from a place I've loved for years. I don't expect I'll be back soon.

There are two strapping young bartenders here by the name of Daniel (M) and Oliver. Much recommended! If you are in town then the London is a must visit! A true Melbourne icon.

Had average dinner here last night - not a bad Parma - but after dinner had a RAT run across the floor of the pub. I felt sick! Yuck! Told waiter who shrugged and said "that'd be right" .... What?? Not the right reaction to being told there's a rat running around your tables.

The London is a great local. Came here on parmigiana night and the curry night. For $10, it's a bargain. The chips are always delicious too.

Chose to grab a bite to eat before the Soccer on Tuesday night at the London Tavern because of its location to the MCG.It was Curry night $10 for 3 choices...it was value for money! However the Main Menu on Blackboard wasn't.
My Son chose the Salmon at $27, Very Expensive for what was served, A very small piece of Salmon on bed of chickpeas with Chorezo flecks through them.....no veg, no potatoes. {Chips were extra $6....! We also ordered an entree of Saganaki Cheese.....One small triangle of Cheese .....and that cost $15. Rather find a Restaurant at least the servings will be up to standard.
Parma Daze
I like the London Tavern, it manages to keep an old-world country pub feel while maintaining everything you need in a modern pub. The next time I go to the footy at the ‘G ducking into the London for a pint afterwards is definitely on my agenda. The parma had a couple of issues but overall it was decent, I wouldn’t travel long distances for it but if you’re in the area (especially on a Monday night) definitely give it a crack.
Mooka Chook
Good local pub, but average food. Good for watching sport and a few drinks in the beer garden. Good spot for a pre-MCG game beer. Limited wine list. Bar staff are ok.
Book.worm
Great Mexican Chicken with black bean, corn and avocado salsa tonight
The salmon also looked delicious
Henry
Tough steak. Had T-bone steak for lunch $ 33. Asked for medium, It came out dry and tough..Was it from an old cow ?
Have indigestion...
Eddie
It stays true to its pub roots all night… no music… no clearing of tables… just a good old fashioned pub and a great place to catch the footy on tv… or even drop by before or after the footy at the G.
Minda Barley
Yep a good place for an informal and tasty pub lunch.
Eat And Be Merry Crew
Sometimes it feels like the only places we visit around Melbourne arecafes and cheap Asian restaurants. I know Melbourne specialises in these but we've made a conscious decision to try a few more pub meals. First off the rank was the London Tavern Hotel. The London Tavern is located in a Richmond side street a couple of drop punts away from the old Punt Road Oval. You probably wouldn't come across it unless a local or making a special visit like we were. Out the back is a very spacious beer garden, partly undercover and partly out in the open. On a fairly miserable day it was still pretty nice out there and quite popular. I would have preferred something with a bit more individual styling though rather than red brick walls, brown wooden tables and a plasma screen TV playing the NBA all-star three point shooting contest in the background. The blackboard menu contains some old pub favourites like chicken parmas and steak sandwiches, as well as some more modern Australian pub dishes, part

Had a great value pub meal today. Great curry for me and the wife had the tonkatsu burger. Service was typical old Richmond pub that was relaxed but good.
Christopher.richardm
Place is a dump. Place is a dead set dump and the staff are a bunch of giant spanners .
Matt
Melons. Fantastic cold Carlton Draught , good food and awesome beer garden
Tommy Rodger
Good for beers, bad for food. Outdoor boozing on a sunny day - good

Big screen sporting action - good

Crinkle cut chips (straight from the freezer) with a tasteless burger (wagyu.... seriously?) along with a cheese slice for $21 - very bad

Don't mix your beer and food venues folks. Next time I'll grab a bite at the Richmond Club before popping along here to watch the sport on the screen.

Black Angus with Yellow and Black. Went here for lunch on a Monday afternoon. Had the Black Angus Porterhouse steak with guacamole, salsa and polenta chips. It was awesome! Washed down with a couple of cheeky Carlton Draughts and a look at some of the Richmond memorabilia on the walls. Very nice meal.

Poor layout caused frustrating visit. Will never go here again. Went out of our way to make it to this pub after being told it was a hotspot to watch the Tigers play. Maybe if it wasnt so packed it would have been different. But seriously what the hell is with the giant pole in the beer garden restricting view of the tv? But more importantly it does not matter how big and spacious your beer garden is and how many tables and chairs you put out there when, just as the ball bounces you allow every tall ignorant male in the place to rock up and stand in the middle of the room blocking the view of over half the other patrons who had gotten there early to get a table. Staff had no interest in sorting the situation out and a polite word to a few of the offenders by patrons themselves nearly turned into an all in brawl. This pub needs more tvs outside, but also an attitude tune up for staff, security and patrons. We left before half time to the Eureka where we enjoyed the football with some more classy supporters and without the shitfight for a drink or to see the screen.

Festivus - Good pub food. Its a safe bet pub
I had the parma and my friend across a good looking meal too
good options on tap and nice range of menu

A piece of paper to fill out is not trivia. I went with some friends to the "Wednesday trivia" which is advertised as starting at 7:30. Around 7:30 we were approached by a guy handing out sheets of paper with 15 questions on it. He said the London had "silent trivia" and we had an hour to complete the sheet. It was like doing the Herald Sun or Age quiz. If you want to go to a trivia night go elsewhere as the trivia here is virtually non existent.

That said it is a good pub to watch sport at.
Sarah Mullenger
Average food, dry chicken flavouress sides and gravy looked and tasted like oil from the deep fryer. A friend ordered a vodka and raspberry and the bar staff gave her a glass of straight raspberry cordial and would not fix it when requested.
Adam
Kid friendly my arse. Go.... Kid friendly my arse.

Got a rude "No" when I asked for a kids menu despite the fact that at least half of the customers in the place on a Monday afternoon are with kids.

As for the food, a soggy steak sandwich and cooked-from-frozen McCain fries doesn't cut it anymore.

Get over yourselves.
Preston Starr
Unwelcome as a patron?. I like to give places a couple of tries before I post a negative review. Look at my track record.

But, this place is simply a confusing mess. I have never had such mixed feelings. Start with the positives - the location is great, the venue is well decked out and the food was definitely well above par for the course.

But, and this is a big but, I have never seen patrons treated so poorly by the staff. It was ridiculous to watch. I place a large caveat on the next comment, there was a manager/supervisor who was working her behind off to be customer focussed - but her team were rude, inattentive and, frankly, disinterested. They were dreadful.

And then there was the bouncer. I don't know who he thought he was, but in a pub fully of happy (not rowdy, not drunk) good people who were enjoying the tennis and the cricket without incident, this guy's behaviour was embarrassing. Frankly, he cost the publican money, and he certainly has cost a repeat visit from our group.

Sure, the beer garden closes at 10pm. I respect that. But, at 9:50pm (when the pub is well below capacity, but full of cheery revellers - many of whom had been there most of the day) to turn off both TV's in the beer garden with 9 balls to go in the cricket (which, incidentally, finished before 10pm) and simply tell people to 'shut up' was appalling. It showed a complete lack of respect to the customers, and soured our entire day. We put lots over the bar, watched the whole game, except for the last over. Disrespectful. Of course, once we moved inside the disinterested bar staff couldn't be bothered putting one of the six TV's onto the cricket because that was just 'too hard' (until the good manager came in and we saw the last two balls).

To be treated like that was disgusting. It showed not gratitude for the patronage shown to the venue, and was an exercise in arrogance by the bouncer, and complete arrogance by the bar staff. The bouncer should be removed immediately (I believe he was 58 tonight).

Will I return? Never. And I don't say that lightly.

Service is important. I don't attend any venue twice to be treated like that.
Shane
I use to call this place my local! It was once a great beer garden but now is more interested in taking your money at any cost.
The bounces are terrible there watching you like a hawk and are brute like saw one guy ask a simple question as to why he was removed and the answer? Just because I saw this happen four times then again but this time I left and saw a bouncer offer to take the guy around the corner! And all he asked was why have I been removed.
Some of the food is nice others like the Parma is crap it's like a lucky dip!
There toilets are shocking no lights in the mail sit downs no locks and the hand dryer and tap are shocking! The bouncers will one day end up killing some one with a king hit mark my words please stay away it's nice to sit in the sun but there's better than this dump try the mtn view roof top bar or the all nations! So much better pubs than this dump
Marshall Thomson
Why do pubs almost always assume that vegetarians eat rabbit food, or if not, really really small portion sizes? Great flavour, but where's the rest of it?? Very poor value.
The Foodster Blogga
Review of the richmond tavern. The food was a bit average [chicken parma with chips, coleslaw, and gravy to be particular].
chicken potion a bit large to my liking, and gravy a bit watery.
would be good if there was menus on the tables, and maybe just one area to order food and drinks.
didn't know there was two places to order drinks and food separately.
otherwise an ok experience 3/5
Tash Loves Food
Average Food. We chose to eat at the London Tavern Hotel due to the outdoor beer garden, on a nice day we thought it was a great way to enjoy a few drinks with our dinner. I'd have to say the food was a pretty big letdown, between the three of us we ordered two chicken parma's and the salmon. The chicken was dry, slightly burnt on the edges, topped with tasteless tomato sauce and came with no Ham. I really don't understand how anyone can get a chicken parmigiana that wrong. The salmon looked nice and our friend said it tasted nice, although the serving was quite small considering the price. Would we come back? To enjoy a few drinks in the sun sure! But for the food unfortunately no.

I have been in the service industry all of my life and there are certain days that are worse then others. That in NO means that you take it out on the customer! I don't care if you hate your job that is not my concern be hospitable your are in the hospitality industry after all. I would have given this complaint to a manager but none could be found... I suppose that makes sense after all.
Butlerm
After watching the bus boy rudely push people out of his way all afternoon, he proceeded to elbow my partner in the back at which point I asked him to politely ask people to move and lose his attitude. At this point he told me he would have me removed. I told him no problems as I would rather spend my money at a venue that has respectable and polite staff. I then settled my bill advised the security of the actual situation and went to the aviary. I would advise anyone who appreciates good sev ice to bypass the London as the staff are not polite, have attitude problems and over inflated egos. The security staff while doing their job politely did not bother understanding the situation and the fact that the issue was caused by immature and argumentative staff. As a result my group left the venue and took or money elsewhere .
Jo C
The Parma was tough as old boot leather. Absolutely awful. Also, the trivia night wasn't as good as other pubs nearby.
BradC
Gone downhill. Used to be able to rely upon the London to provide you with an honest parma and a friendly environment. I'm not sure if the change in ownership has prompted the drop in food standard, but it clearly isn't what it used to be.

Sad loss
Sally
Bad bad... I have spent 3 days recovering from a family Dinner for 15 at the london tavern,my local...
Not only were the bar staff incredibly rude..I had gastric for 2 days... The worst Food I have ever eaten..My God it used to be our local good meal..but I dont know whats happened,it is now the WORST FOOD and The WORST STAFF...I will never Return Yuck.....
No Matter,Ive moved onto The Kingston or All Nations, also good food..but I wont get gastric and the Staff have better manners...
Good Luck London,I guess you've lost your Good Food/Family Feel to ??
Local
Forget the quiet drink and meal with friends. With a reputation for being a great place that caters all, especially the locals who want a decent meal at a reasonable price - it comes at great cost !!! Management allow screaming out of control children to disrupt the entire dining area and court yard. Dare raise the issue and expect to be evicted.
Deb Corser
One of Melbourne's best beer garden. Love the london - beers in the sun on a sunday - always perfect!
Richmondlocal
Worst Parma in Melbourne! Dry, no ham. Same crappy Parma I had 2 years ago!
DarlingRed
We've All Been There.... You can always count on the parma and the steak sanga here. Recently had their lamb chops and was mightily impressed. Good wine selection for a down-and-dirty pub helps as well. Years ago I thought the food here was pricey given the surrounds but seems fine now. Put it into your rotation.
Thomy
Go for!. I love this Place, hands down on the awesome tapas and service here.
Cameron Hocking
Great spot before the footy. Great spot to go for a few beers and a meal before a footy game. Large outdoor beer garden with standard pub food.
Tan Emia-Moore
Great parma. Best Parma I've had in Melbourne, don't forget to get the sweet chilli mayo!
Sirlunchalot
Good food good pub. Great place to catch up with friends no loud music to drown out conversation food is always decent for the price and sporting events are covered on the plasmas. If i lived local it would be a regular haunt.
Richmond Bar Fly
Timeless. Great food - love the chicken curry
Great Staff
Great beer garden
How can you go wrong?
Fat_kid
Great pub experience. Not one of the flashier pubs around but staff are great and food is flavorsome and presented quite well.
Happy J
Pork Roll. An absolute rubbish steak sandwich, the full combo. Under cooked stringy steak, soggy bread, brown edged lettuce, flat over-ripe tomato, black bits under the steak from an un-clean hot-plate. And when I didn't eat it no enquired as to why. A bargain at $15. Walk to Swan street and buy a pork roll.
Cinnyis
The food was nothing special just typical pub grub and there's not much atmosphere. It would have been an ok night if it hadn't been for the moron bouncer hassling us on the way in. He didn't say anything to all the loud groups in footy jerseys, but felt he needed to give my boyfriend and I a second look and some attitude. Won't bother going here again. There's so many better places to eat around this area without being harassed on the way in.
Heytys
Dirty and lacks atmosphere plenty of other places to go in Richmond. Average food, won't be going there again.
Larry's Reviews
Jimmy liked the pork bangers and mash, other Jimmy thought the steak sandwich was nice and the 14 yo like the chicken schnitzel. Over all your standard pub meal.
Jlowe
Reasonable but nothing special pub food, apparently they don't cook veggies at all, when I requested them with my steak
Geno
Top Tavern. Great friendly staff and really good bar food. Wine selection is good and reasonably priced. Not a good place to be Grand Final Day when it is packed.
WineWonker
Good Food Pub.. Great place to eat and drink in both summer and winter with the extensive beer garden and open fireplace respectively making things enjoyable. Awesomely diverse menu ranging from Sri Lankan curries to a quality chicken Parma. The fresh dips and breads come recommended too if a main isn't necessary. Good wine list by bottle and glass. Great place to stop off at before or after a trip to the MCG. Never disappoints!
Jrgnsn_tjf
Tucked away treasure. Wednesday night is trivia night here, and I was surprised at the high level of integrity!! Started with a pretty bland guacamole and tuna tapas, but had a terrific porterhouse on potato mash. The parmas looked great too. Must have new chefs in here since I last went three years ago because the meals (and service) has improved a great deal.
Davis
One of the better pubs within walking distance of the MCG. The bogan ratio tends to be quite high of a Saturday night but it caters for all and cannot be faulted otherwise. Parmas are well worth having.
Katie
Fantastic out of the way pub. Not much to look at from the outside (or even inside the pub) but the beer garden is fantastic! Can't wait to go back.
Wells
The London Tavern is good it has good food and a space out back. But at night and especially on footy night there is tovmych noise!! I live near it and it's not very pleasent to hear. So if you are looking for a pleasent night out then this Tavern is a place to avoid.
Todd
London Tavern - good food!. GREAT food at the London Tavern. Although pub meals, they stand on their own pretty damned well. The chicken parma is one of the best I've had in Melbourne, it's very relaxed, and the beer garden is good fun on a warmer evening. The inside bar is very casual as well. An all 'round good place to go for beers and dinner.
